13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He gives a lot of examples of real-life examples of how tort law is applied and how it works in "real life." He also uses life and legal experiences to explain how torts are or are not possible given the situation, which makes it easier to understand the many different types of torts to offset the straight-forward textbooks that accompanies the class.
Lets you know in advance what subject matter will be presented following class in clear and consie manner.
Relating class lectures and textbook readings to relevant, real cases and his own personal life experiences. It puts everything into context.
knowledgeable professor with a great experience, he shares as much information as he can and makes it very interesting
Mr. Markham is very organized and knowledgeable of the material he covers. He keeps us updated and informed about up coming assignments. He gives his student great examples to help us understand the information he presents.
Mr. Markham is very knowledgeable in the subject area. He uses lots of real life scenarios that he has experienced to tie in with the lessons being taught which makes learning more realistic and easier to understand.
One of the biggest strengths of Professor Markham is his passion for the subject matter. His enthusiasm in class made a big difference for me and the rest of the class as far as participation and well thought out discussions were concerned. Would definitely recommend this class to any student seeking a paralegal degree.
Professor Markham's major strength is explaining tort law in terms that are understandable. He uses his experiences and relates them to our class discussions. It's a great way to get some real life insight into the legal field.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
via email and in person... anything you have on your mind with school or project, Mr. Markham helps without a doubt
He showed concern by explaining in great detail about information he covers. He also provides good examples or scenarios to help us gain a better understanding. He also repeats information so that students like myself can take good notes.
Professor Markham showed concern for students by sticking around after class ended to see if anyone had any questions/concerns that they could speak to him privately about.
Professor Markham made sure that everyone understood the material before moving onto the next topic. He is thorough in his answers to questions. He also makes him self available to students if there are any other concerns regarding class material after class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would because his extensive knowledge of tort and how he teaches it makes the course, which seems appears daunting and overwhelming at first due to reading the "Tort Law" textbook, easier to understand and process.
Yes, his classes are very informative and interesting. Learned a lot of information.
Yes. See above comment.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He has a lot of real-world experience and has practical knowledge of the material presented.
Not only does he know his subject matter well but he knows how to convey it to his students in a way that organizes it into a skill-set. Beyond knowing his subject, he also has many real-life examples and anecdotes that emphasize the point he is making, (for example, why you should never waive your opening statement.
This guy is very knowledgeable about his craft. He is an expert at what he does and makes the class so enjoyable. He relates to the class in such a way that keeps them engaged.
knowledgeable about the material, makes difficult subjects seem simple, and a great speaker
He has excellent knowledge of the field that he is teaching and a lot of other things as well.
His knowledge of the subject.
His ability to weave his personal experiences, knowledge, and expertise with the subject matter.
Very knowledgeable and informative.
Knowing his subject matter and providing clear and concise examples through his own personal experiences as an attorney. Made learning fun and made me look forward to attending his classes each week.
His current position in the litigation field adds real-life content to the subject matter.
He has excellent examples for the subject matter, and is a great litigator.
Knowledgeable and makes you feel like you are in the workplace. The firsthand experience gives valuable insights of the law environment. Extremely enthusiastic and makes you feel the practicality of the legal system. I highly recommend Professor Markham for what he has to work with all kinds of walk of life in his classroom; those without any experience or wordly travels. He ix patient and enjoys what he does.
Knowledgeable in area of law teaching. Keeps lectures interesting and relates real life to lecture.
Extremely knowledgeable. Very nice, easy to get along with. More like a friend. Always, always, always leave his class 100% sure that I have the right major...(this is my third major change) I always feel good about going to his class.
He is very knowledgeable and interesting and gives alot of examples that are relevant to what we are learning. He encouraged student participation in class and encouraged us to do role playing so we learned how to conduct a client interview and obtain relevant facts and information from the interviewee. He was always very positive and encouraging. He gave suggestions on how to make improvements where needed. When I e-mailed him he answered promptly and addressed my concerns.
Very enthusiastic about teaching these topics. Highly motivating teaching style. Mr. Markham has an incredible wealth and breadth of professional knowledge. He offered wonderfully practical advice for working in the Hawaii legal community.
He conveys the subject matter well with interesting stories. He also encourages the students to think for themselves by making them do a project at the end where they each perform part of a trial.
He knows the subject area and applies it to current situations. He provides a lot of examples in tying concepts and applications together.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Better communication with students! The process of getting relevant class information out and getting handouts to students should be revised. We pay $22 to him for handouts and they're not complete, pages are missing and if we were unable to make it to class and advise him that we will be missing a class he tells us to get a handout from someone in the class and to make copies. We pay for these it would be nice if they had the complete information and that you had extras available for students so that they do not have to spend extra to make their own copies of handouts that we paid for.
I would suggest some additional quizzes. I see them as an opportunity to improve my grade.
None
try to do all the Problems that you printed out. That way students can apply what they learn. Give more time (class and weeks) to work on the Baily and Arakiki Case
None
None
I understand that he is a busy practicing attorney, but help outside of class was hard to come by.
Absolutely nothing.
I would have rather had the text book, and not pay $22 for a stack of handouts. Alternatively, have the handouts pre-bound for a cost. It saves the student time from having to build their own text book, in addition, text usually has exercises for the student to do while reading.
The handouts are exceptional and appreciate having it available to the students. The group activity is a hardship when you have students who no show for class, yet get credit for taking the test and final. It appears that one has to carry the weight for those who simply are in the program tailored around their schedule. It is raw when the party who attends 100%, works full-time and does the work is short changed. This is a program overview which should screen students such as described.
Consideration for open book, notes, handouts quizes and final exam.
None, he's a great guy!
I would have liked more guidance and preparation on the group project to role-play an administrative hearing. It was difficult to feel prepared and I felt totally lost working with my group. I wish I had more formal instruction from Professor Markham so that I could work more effectively with my group.
None
Provide clearer handouts. Appears that he's been using the same handouts which are getting fuzzy.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He once asked me if I had a good break other than that there was little concern shown in my opinion. I feel like we're there to be his audience rather than to be taught.
He allows plenty of opportunity to express your opinion, bring up information on the topic and participate in the discussion and responds in a personable way that makes students feel comfortable.
He is willing to work with the student if they need special assistance or to work out an arrangement for missed classes. Not all teachers will do that. He wants everyone to succeed.
Talked with students during break and being accessible outside of school
He was very caring made sure all the students understood and participated in the activities and class.
Reminded us of our deadlines and gave us interesting examples.
Making sure he was easily accessible if you wanted to meet with him.
He was very accessible and understanding when I needed something outside of class, giving us access to his office and assistant when I needed something.
Always responds immediately to an email; arrives early to answer and visit with students and the same after class. During breaks, he makes himself available to student to answer or visit to catch up with class. Looks out for those who have not attended class and makes multiple inquiries.
Showing understanding and consideration for circumstances beyond one's control such as being ill/medical urgency.
Remembers if you missed a class, will talk to you personally about what you need to do and catch up on. Will bring in extra worksheets from the previous class to give you so that you don't need to make your own copies. Let us pay $20 for worksheets instead of purchasing a whole book for the semester that we really cant afford and probably are not going to use-for the most part. Remembers your name. Talks to you directly.
Always answered questions graciously and thoroughly.
If there was ever a problem that came up he was there to listen and offer whatever advice that he could give on the matter.
He highly encourages student participation throughout the course so that everyone is required to participate one way or another
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Since he teaches a required course, there's no way around taking his class. I would suggest to just take it and get it over with.
Yes, because he makes you feel comfortable with the techniques of speaking out as you must do when interviewing, negotiating and advocating on behalf of clients.
Yes I would recommend Markham because the law courses can be so dry and so tedious but he makes it relative and has a great sense of humor. Nothing like having a lot of laughs while your learning.
Yes, he is a great teacher, very considerate, and knowledgable
Yes, he keeps the class entertained so we want to know more.
Yes. It's a very educational experience.
Yes. Professor Markham rocks.
Depends on the student. If the student needed more guidance and assistance with the course then I would not recommend the class. But if they are quick learners and can learn mostly from reading handouts then it's a great class to take.
Definitely. He is passionate about what he does and you can tell that he enjoys being an instructor and teaching us and making sure we understand the subject matter.
Yes. His discussions are lively and help to clarify whatever is being taught that day.
Yes, however, I think he would be better as a seminar instructor rather than an instructor. I expected more out of the class than what I took from it, although I take much of that responsibility. So if a student does take him, they need to be very self motivated and not rely on the instructor to initiate learning.
Absolutely and with high regards for he makes the subject matter interesting. Also you learn a lot which makes it applicable to the real world.
Yes, I would recommend Mr. Markham class to fellow students!
Definitely. You can tell he teaches because he likes it...not because he needs the money. Makes it so much easier when the person teaching you actually likes what they do. Feel like I'm getting lot's of experience in this class....and I can see the progress that I, and other classmates are making.
Yes He made the class interesting and gave us hands on experience through role playing. We did a client interview and learned interview techniques and how to deal with different types of clients. We had to prepare for an administrative hearing. He encouraged us to interact with other students in our class through group participation and each of us had to make an oral presentation where we presented our party's case (the plaintiff or defendant). In the process of preparing for our case we learned how to outline the order of the hearing and to include the opening statement, direct and cross examination and closing statements. We also observed how the negotiation process works and how the administrator helps in reaching a amicable solution.
Yes.
Yes, his class is one of the more important classes, because he teaches the student the basics of what a trial is, and how it is performed.
Yes.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He makes comments in front of the class about students' appearances. These comments seem 99.9% of the time directed at female students. There were 5 male students and I did not hear one comment about them during the whole semester. During that time he must have made a comment about every female student in the class at least once.
I haven't taken his class on torts, but from the enthusiasm I see from other students in that class, I know it must be a good class.
He's a funny guy who has great stories which he tells to relate it to subject he's teaching.
Very knowledgeable and I can tell that he enjoys teaching. Just wish he had more time. For example, during prepping for mock hearing left class early. Would be nice if he stayed longer just in case other questions came up.
Great teacher along with a great learning environment.
I love his anecdotes and applications when it comes to the law and interviewing, however, sometimes they do go on for a while, where that time could have been used for more individual exercises and learning experiences.
This is one of the best professors in the entire program. I have grown to love his passion for the legal field and for his desire to always be perfected. Organization is a must and it definitely shows because he is successful with his firm. His learning lessons are beneficial to the young students, which are wisdom guidance which I wished I was given at UHM.
He encourages everyone in the class to participate in class discussion and don't be shame/afraid to stop him and ask questions! Takes the time to remember the names of the students.
Nice guy, fair, strong willed. Set's goals and makes sure it get's done. Can roll with the punches and change things for the better.
Excellent Professor.
Nothing
He gives a lot of history lessons.
18. Other comments:
Great teacher, just seems like his schedule is too full for teaching sometimes...
Classroom could be a little more warmer and cleaner

Hey thanks for being a great teacher! I've even recommended you to a friend that was looking for an attorney. You're definitely the kind of attorney that I would want handling a personal matter. P.M.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
His use of real world examples makes the course material interesting and fun.
He leads students just far enough so that they are forced to problem solve the rest of the way. He lets students discover their own strengths and weaknesses. He prompts students to back up their motions.
Highly knowledgeable and makes you experience the real life law firm workplace of the fast pace. This course allowed valuable insights of the law environment and how quick the climate changes. Professor Markham's enthusiasm makes you feel the practicality of the legal system in Hawaii and what actions are required to make things happen. I have high regards for Professor Markham and delighted that I was able to be part of the first year development of the course. The course prep for the real world and with Professor Markham's guidance, I felt that I was in teh real setting of working the file to trial. His patient helped to make the experience less frustrating.
His knowledge.
He's knows everything very well in his field...and probably beyond his field.
ability to coach us in the right direction.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
For the next class, it would be helpful to have a computer and a printer as this course requires a lot of printing
The class setting should be like a medical lab for intern doctors: setup in the Law 148 computer room to have computers, internet, printing, West Law and other office capabilities to function like a Law firm to actual feel the environment. One does not learn about auto repair in a classroom? This is a major requirement for the course. The other is to conduct the final sessions for the trial in a real court room such as at the UH Law School. Templates are also helpful and should be included like Law 148 to create continuity and consistency. The handouts are exceptional and appreciate having it available to the students. The group activity is a hardship when you have students who are constantly absent, but still get credit. It appears that the same people are doing all the work for those who did not have the pre-req. claim they don't know what to do.
That there should be a computer we can use in the class. We should have access to Westlaw.
nothing
edevelopment of people involved in case.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
If there was a problem at any point during the semester he was there to help resolve the problem and answer any questions that we might have.
He encourages student participation and transparency.
Professor Markham quickly responds to emails to answer questions. He also arrives early to visit with students and the same after class. During breaks, he makes himself available to students in order to catch up with the class. He is notorious for looking out for those who have not attended class and makes multiple inquiries.
he is very quick with e-mails...this is importanat when i had questions that needed immediate attention.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, this was an extremely fun and informative class. Because of taking this class I feel that I am ahead in most of my other classes because this class exposes you to so much of the things that you need to know as a law professional.
Yes.
YES, absolutely and with high regards for he made the class quite spicy! I feel that I learned a lot from this course, which prep you for everything. It was a combination of Law 148, Legal Writing and COOP.
yes, i already have.
Yes, it was a fun class, that I really had to relearn things and discover concepts I have not studied yet.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
None
He enforces deadlines and sanctions those who do not comply.
I am now a big fan of Professor Markham and I am grateful for having him last Fall for Torts. His enthusiasm for teaching has lead me to take this class. I truly believe his is right up there with Professor Ogawa as one of the best professors in the entire program. I now am fond of his passion for the legal field and his desire to always strive to be perfect. The key from his lectures is "organization" in order to be ready/prepared for your client and trial. The sharing of his introductory to the world of 101 learning lessons are overly valuable and the young students are lucky for I never experienced it at UHM. I was only a number (the last 4 digits of my ss number).
