I like that he often refer concepts to real life case studies to provide examples

szuster keeps lectures entertaining and interesting.

The powerpoint lectures given by Szuster are the best part of the course. The EIA group project was a good intermediary break. The powerpoints had good visuals that kept the student's interest.

The powerpoints were helpful in communicating the content of the class. The course is a clear way of learning about EISs

Understanding a very important process in land use and development.

His teaching. He was a great teacer.

Dr. Brian Szuster really made this course as great as it was. His personal expieriences and his vast knowledge of the topic helps him teach the important material. He is cool, very approachable, and willing to help out anybody who needs it.

Lectures were informative. You could definitively tell that Prof. Szuster had lots of professional experience in field of Environmental Assessments. Questions and Comments by students during the lecture were always welcomed.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

not many.

The superferry paper. I wish that it could have been on any project of our choice. I felt tempted to summarize and discuss the policy and judiciary side of environmental assessment than the process of EIA's. I would prefer an assignment that lets us try to do a mini EIS instead.

I didn't like the research portions in some aspects as the materials are a bit much and narrowing it down to certain points are a bit vaque.

I really enjoyed the presentation as we were able to conduct more research into the EIA topic and relate the material with our research for a better understanding. It is a great approach. I also really enjoyed the guess speakers.

The case studies were interesting (shrimp farming)

The paper and the presentation, althought they were extra work I feel they are better then exams

Powerpoint class presentations shared through Laulima to study from. In future to have these available during class to write in notes would be beneficial. Case studies, videos & supplemental material supported what was taught in class & very helpful for learning.

Good overall course. I like the way the class was run with everything for the semester known from the start.

I liked the hands on activities such as scoping exercises as well as the case studies.

The diversity of projects, the relevant nature of the topics, the teacher was an awesome canuck.

Classes were well organized and concepts were discussed practically. Information was also available on Laulima for review.

The history and concepts as well as method and techniques in environmental assessments.

I liked that he was really thorough through out the whole course but cut out the stuff that was not needed.

I liked the group project and presentation because it allows students to see examples of what this course was all about. It helped me understand what an EIS is and what it contain, and seeing other group's EIS showed what really worked and what did not work in the EIS process.

The topics are great; they are very informative. Writing papers are good, too, because we need to improve our skills. Plus, presentations are a good way to get used to public speaking and improve skills in that area.

Great professor, just wish there were more courses offered by Mr. Szuster dealing with undergraduate into the environment and law.

Interesting course that provided important knowledge about Environmental Impact Statements and the components that they are made up of. I enjoyed this course and learned a lot.

Great course...

Professor Szuster portrays enthusiasm for the course material. It's always a plus to see a professor that's excited about his work. As such, he was able to communicate in an effective manner which allowed some of his enthusiasm to rub off on the students. I recommend that he teaches the 413 class as well.

I liked learning about the different EIS that the class groups presented.

Very good instructor.

Comprehensive coverage of the course topic with sufficient detail for an overview course. Dr. Szuster is among the best instructors I've had at UH (and overall); compared with others I've had at UH he was very effective and fair in his teaching and assessment. I would rather have an instructor like him, who will grade critically, and risk not getting an A then the average UH prof (who gives everyone an A because they cannot teach). It was very interesting to get the one day, half-a-class, overview of his PhD research, tied into the course material.

The presentation assignment was a good opportunity to examine and analyze actual examples of assessments even though not all of the presentations were fully informative.

This is really new to me. Through the class, I understand the basic knowledge of EIA in the U.S. and in the world. I will develop my skills on the field of EIA as the important role of it to sustainable development.

The case studies/presentations.

The organization and clarity of each topic. I left the class understanding each step of the EIA process; or at least the purpose and definitions behind it.

Group presentations,instructor presentations, guest speakers, length, time, location, video...great course.

I liked that the course was well organized and the goals and objectives were clearly stated. Also having the due date for the final paper be in late november was helpful. The precis were useful because they allowed us to organize our thoughts in a concise manner. Also having the presentations on laulima helped because it is often overwhelming to try and take notes in class and having the ability to double check online was great.

I liked the case study about the Superferry the best.

Use of slides for teaching was effective and interesting.

I liked the assignment where we studied a past EIA case study. This allowed for a critical understanding of the process and production of an EIA.

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the class. I felt that there was enough assignments to supplement and better understand the lectures but not too much such that we would be drowned in work.

I enjoyed the student case studies as they provided insight into the variety of issues that can arise in the environmental assessment process. I also liked the practical exercises that we went through in class. Brian was able to relate his own professional experience to the aspects of EIS that we were studying.

Teacher's enthusiasm encouraged my interest in the subject; I really liked his theory on preparing for the final exam (precis assignments)

19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

The precis articles were hard to understand sometimes because they were repetitive (within one article)

PRESENTATION

I would have liked to hear more about EIAs on which Dr. Szuster has worked or knows about. It was great to have so many student presentations on so many EIAs, but more case studies from the prof. would have been good too.

The text was not great.

I did not appreciate the way a few students constantly talked while Professor Szuster was talking.

There lacked applicability to the every day scene. The group presentations helped incorporate EIA today; however, perhaps a class lecture that focused on more EIA's and how a specific project would undergo an EIA would have helped to better understand the steps. Although this was just an intro level class.

Not much interaction between students

I disliked the reading. Many of the articles rambled and did not have good focus.

Nothing.

With such a large class it was hard to create a discussion environment. This would hel palot i think.

I wish this course could have been more discussion oriented rather than lecture style.

Sometimes the lectures were a bit long and drawn out. There was a lot of content to cover, and a high number of students in the class so discussion was left to a relative minimum.

Size of class made it hard for us to get a "hands on" experience

Good course. I know what is EIA now...:-)

Well worth my time, money, and effort.

I am excited for future students to participate in the 700 level EIA course that Dr. Szuster is planning.

The mix of students from different places and disciplines was enjoyable.

In class we discussed having a class that would be part II to this class that would allow us to have more hands on experience with EIAs. I think that this is a great idea and something that i would definitely sign up for.

The course is quite useful and i like to take advance course if it will be available as discussed in the last class.

It was a really good coure that teeaches the basics of the EIA practice. Very useful in my future development as an Architect.

I really enjoyed this class, and hope that the Geography department strongly considers developing some sort of EIS practicum.

The powerpoints were very informational and enjoyable. The short videos were also very helpful in furthur illustrating the information. Also although I dreaded writting it, the movie paper was quite enjoyable once i finished it.

Learned not only the geographical aspects of SE Asia but the cultural and language parts as well. Gave a well rounded view of SE Asia. Instructor was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject.

The class presetnations were interesting because of the different people the class chose to present on, but it wasn't very informative. This is not a reflection on the project, but of the delivery of the presentation. Perhaps more defined guidelines would make each presentation more swavy.
