16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Information was presented in an easy-to-understand way, and was made relevant by using examples from this and other islands.
The availability of the power points and the teachers information on each slide.
Dr. Szuster is very knowledgable and helpful. His system of breaking the course material down is very effective.
I liked that the tests followed what we learned in class. What we had to study was clear cut, and well reviewed for those who attended the lectures.
constant learning
I hate science but I like how enthusiastic the professor was
The professor has mastery of the content and an excellent sense of humor. It makes the learning interesting.
Videos
Professor organizes the lectures very well, had a strong voice, and he has good understanding of subject.
I liked learning about tsunamis and earthquakes.
Szuster did a fantastic job of explaining topics and being engaging with the class. He communicated effectively and is very passionate about his teachings.
I really really enjoyed having Brian Szuster as my profesor. Even though this class did not take attendance, I came to class everyday because Brian made the class fun and enjoyable! I loved coming to class:)
The teacher made the lecture very interesting
Good solid teaching by the professor! Makes a heavy subject more enjoyable!
The time, but the location was not convenient.
simple
the volcano/hurricane section
His powerpoints and visual aids on the power points where extremely helpful. I also like how he'd encourage students to go to class
The powerpoints
I liked being able to follow along with the power points and was easy to follow.
The study guides.
PowerPoints
I enjoy having a class I know I'm going to have a good time in and Vin was an enjoyable TA to have. I also feel like he understood where us as students were coming from more so than other professors.
Our professor! He's great!
na
I really enjoyed how there were study sessions, I do wish that they were held on different days because not everyone could make it on Tuesdays.
I loved how Professor Szuster continued to keep class entertaining and learning fun.
I found it very interesting.
Learning about volcanos.
I liked the occasional documentaries included in the lectures, they added a more engaging medium for the materials.
I liked how Professor Szuster was able to incorporate and relate the material we were learning to events that happen in our world today. In addition, the way he explains some of the harder concepts made it easy to understand.
the lecture was clear and laid back- brian never crammed too much information into each lecture was helpful in not being overwhelmed
I liked how he was fair about the grading, and took the average score of the entire class.
Not much actually
I liked the general information i learned from each section. Some things really helped me understand the earth's environment and how it functions.
The lessons were straightforward and the course material were easily accessible when looking on laulima. It really helped that we could have those study sessions before each test.
Never change how you conduct the class before a midterm!
Good powerpoints/lectures. TA was hot.
Material was organized and flowed well into each subsequent lecture.
I like the videos and the animated graphs that demonstrated the movement of the elements.
Well explained, went into detail on processes. Felt well prepared for tests
I liked that he put his slideshow presentations online so I can study the finer details.
- the teacher was very organized - I liked that the teacher incorporated/related the course with real life events. - The powerpoint was helpful and had great info
i liked that there were slides uploaded which made it easier to follow along in class and take notes quicker that way i pretty much just took this course for my science requirement but I ended up enjoying it in a way, despite much of the information not being very interesting to learn about. some things were more interesting than others. i liked when videos were played
Brian Szuster is knowledgeable and he gives us a better understand of the course content. I learned a lot of interesting things in this class about the weathers, seasons, earthquakes, tsunami... and how all the things happen. I think they are basic knowledge that I should know and I am glad that I understand them better.
The powerpoints are very helpful.
I liked how videos were incorporated in the lectures, and how the lectures were pretty clear, preparing us well for the exam.
I liked that the course was directed towards the geography of Hawai'i when applicable.
That he was a nice and understanding teacher that cares about the students and isn't just stuck up about grades.
the division of material was helpful.
The course allowed people to understand thier surrounding environment with much better understanding. It was a great intro for many other courses. Great job.
How simple the curriculum was.
I liked everything
The information
Videos for more understanding. Informative powerpoints.
I like that he uploads the slides on Laulima so if we missed a class, we will know what he talked about.
It's all on the exams, you come to class and he gives you the information to pass the class. It's up to you if you want to utilize him.
The videos for certain chapters. Those helped me engage my interest further in this course.
I liked the chapter on weather, earthquakes, tsunami, and volcanoes.
Didnt like any part of it
Powerpoints were very detailed. Appreciated that professor made them accessible through Laulima.
Awesome Professor! Engaging and interesting lectures.
That it was mostly memorization.
Plate tectonics and geology related materials
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I have taken numerous science courses at UH Manoa, 100 level through 400 level courses. Even though this course is a 100 level course, I still studied for the exams just as much as my 400 level classes, if not more, and I felt as if the exams did not fairly cover the material that was covered in class lectures. I attended every lecture and I feel as if my hard work and punctuality was not justified. I do believe I am getting a high B with his curve, but that is unsatisfactory for my expectations. He is very knowledgeable and means well, I just felt like the exams were poorly written.
The curve is by far too generous. Let the students who don't put in the effort pay the consequences.
The grading is confusing and he doesn't offer any other assignments that I feel would help me learn and remember things better and also give everyone a better chance of getting a good grade.
Everything is straight forward in this class and I could not point anything out I didn't like.
I hate science
Only that I didn't study for the first exam as much as I should have.
Lecture
Exam was little hard. Textbook was required but it was not really needed.
Szusters tests can prove to be difficult. I believe that he asks fair questions, but also throws in some out of the blue questions that are up to your best guess. These questions always felt as if they hurt my grade on tests. I am glad he curves the class, but I can't say if the curve is effective yet or not since the class isn't finished.
There were no aspects of the course I didn't like.
tests were tough
First two tests were kind of hard, maybe offer another way to boost grade other than tests, like one optional paper or something for some credit
The location
Not a clear study guide. whats wrong with having a vocabulary sheet of what will be on the test?
plate techtonics
The Tests
He spoke clearly but his voice and the dark room made me sleepy sometimes.
The questions on the exams were a little difficult!
n/a
Some material was boring.
The subject, I had to take this class but will made it fun
na
Some parts of the course were really boring.
N/a
weather.
How the study guide wasn't exclusive.
I am satisfied with every aspect of the course. There is nothing I liked the least.
i like the way the course is set up- no complaints here!
Some of the topics were a little under explained.
The textbook was confusing, lectures were hard to hear and the study guides were hard to follow.
So much information was presented in each class, it was too much to take in. classes seemed to be extremely long with so much information.
I had a misconception about this class being primarily about geography and how the movement of demographics affected the topology of earth. I think I was just a tad disappointed that there wasn't much mention of how humans openly affect geography. Still, I liked the lessons as they were very informative, especially on current geographical events.
Got distracted in class because TA looked hot.
No homework or online help system to follow.
I feel the content of lessons is too heavy.
Not very interactive so was kind of boring/tiering at times. Might have accounted for why low attendance.
Not applicable.
- the study guide was overwhelming. - TA was not helpful
not really anything.
none
NA
I enjoyed everything.
There wasn't anything about the course I didn't like, but the material itself was tough.
Nothing
There shold be homework assignments to help with people being more prepared for tests.
N/A
Teaching method
Professor should use the microphone when lecturing. Study guides are not very well structured.
It's not in his power, but I didn't like that it was far away from my previous class, so I usually walk in late.
Volcanic activity and his love for the topic. He made a lot of topics seem a lot better the
None.
None.
He's so boring
Paragraph format of study guide
it was boring.
The exam felt a little bit too specific when its an elective
There is a lot of information covered and the tests do not reflect half of the information learned/gone over. It makes for a very difficult time studying.
18. Other comments:
Enjoyable and interesting class.
Good
Rocks and souls kind of put me to sleep sometimes.
I would highly recommend Brian Szuster as a profesor to anyone who considered that class!
Thank you!
na
its hard to hear his voice if i sit in the back of classroom
thanks for a great course brian- hope to have you as a professor for another geography course sometime!
Speak with a microphone please, also if there are going to be study guides, I think its more helpful for it to have a question format instead of just a summary of concepts. It seemed to muddled and vague that way.
TA is hot
I wanted to listen the exams' review in class more slowly.

Not applicable
Overall test average for all exams was very low, so maybe the study guide (or exam, etc.) should be revised. Even when students (like me, normally an A student) studied very hard, the results were not satisfactory.
Brian is really enthusiastic on his teaching. He is well- organized and well prepared. I also like all the power points that he presents because they are helpful for the exams.
The class is a really good class to help people understand at least the basics of geology, it's helps you understand the would you live in.
Have a great winter break, and happy holidays.
Brian is awesome
None.
Professor was very knowledgeable about the subject being taught.
Consider posting PowerPoints before class so students can follow along during lecture or print prior to lecture and bring to class.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the structure of the class. Very effective for me.
The grades are based on a class curve.
Professor was easy to understand and follow in lectures and easy to take notes in. Not too hard of a course but not too east, it was a good course for an incoming freshman to get adapted to college life.
wind presentation. too confusing
Learning about plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and of course how our beautiful rocks are formed.
I liked the assisting study guides and the power points all had access on Laulima, that helped me take notes in class since I like to go paperless and save paper.
Videos and movies
I like his simulations on his powerpoints. It made it easier to understand the different activities of our environment. His videos also increased my interest in the subject.
powerpoints were posted online
I liked that there were videos that made the content very interesting.
Professor is helpful
Non-Attendance based
The professor was always happy and excited to teach the content, it made class so much more enjoyable and made me want to learn more
Availability of Powerpoints online to help with personal review sessions.
The Hawaii studies.
The lectures and powerpoint presentations were easy to follow and the concepts were explained as best as possible.
I liked the lava section and learning about the different types of volcanos.
What i enjoyed about this course is the professor, Brian is such a fun teacher, he is so personable, has a great sense of humor, he knows his material and is really passionate about it. If you get to know him and if you as a student develop that student-teacher relationship he will try his best to make sure you understand the material, and if needed meet up with him during after class hours and discuss your understanding in the material to prepare you for the exam. I was so close to dropping the class, because i felt like i wasn't doing so well, but after i spoke with him, we planned to meet up before every exam and discuss my understanding about the material that is going to be in the exam, and with that I've improved my exam scores, compared to the passed I've taken. Brian really cares about his students, although as the semester went more and more students left and not come to class unless we have an exam, but ultimately they were missing out key materials that is in the exam, so don't miss class, why would you.
The subject of Geography doesn't appeal to me personally but if you are interested you the course is great for those who enjoy learning about volcanoes, tornadoes, and other phenomenons such as these.
It was a well Kaye's out class with information readily available
I liked how passionate Brian was about the material. He also took an interest when he saw a student made progress in the class.
I liked that the slides were available online and explained in more detail in class.
The power points as well as the teachers interests in the subject matter.
Brian knows his material very well (I mean, as he should) but ok my opinion, even if he's mentioned that he has taught this class for so many years he doesn't teach the course as if he's tired of it, it's more of he's pretty up beat with the information. The power points were very helpful and available after class, his TA can always make herself available, the videos were very helpful and entertaining to watch, and the curve really helps too!
The power points were online for us to study from. Professor Szuster is EXCELLENT at explaining complicated things in a simple way.
I liked the side information he provided such as his service announcements.
The professor was a very nice man. He communicated very effectively. The curve was fairly generous.
Multiple choice type exams. And he posted slides on Laulima.
Cool
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I didn't really use the book. I felt like t was a waste to buy it.
His power points were packed with a lot of information.
Nothing to complain about, it's education, not going to be like going to a waterpark.
I like everything else beside wind.
chemistry in the sky
What I didn't like was the class disengagement, but then again, this is a beginning level class and most students take this just because its and easy class where as I wanted to take it to learn.
Note taking
I liked everything.
exams
I didn't like how most of the powerpoint had information that weren't on the tests. It was hard to sift through the content.
TA session is pretty much useless
The fact that it's non attendance and yet the professor said that if more people don't show up, class notes will not be given out anymore. I understand that it's an incredibly nice gesture by the professor to post notes outside of class, but for the attendance thing; probably shouldn't make attendance optional and be surprised if people don't show up. As someone who had to miss many classes due to personal issues, I am very grateful the professor put the class notes up outside of class.
Grade system of only 4 exams to determine entire course grade was stressful.
The frequent exams.
Although I get the material in class, the exams were kind of challenging.
I did not like the climate part, what the first exam covered.
n/a
The subject of geography is boring
That the class was made up entirely of exams and no homework.
I couldn't make study sessions because of the time.
Sometimes it became a bit boring.
N/A I personally really enjoyed this course.
That my classmates did not respect the course. I LOVED GEOG101!
Even though the class size was small, there was not an atmosphere for asking questions. Also I think having your grade solely rely on exam scores is silly. There should have been some sort of extra credit, attendance, etc. HE had a TA but she didn't even do anything. With the small class size, TA, there should have been more room for tasks to help people who are not the best test takers. On top of that it was completely multiple choice, which is often confusing. The test should include something else.
It was not easy to understand what the point was for each topic.
Tests

The course felt a little more like geology to me as I had learned quite a few of these topics last year in my senior geology class in high school
Very nice and kind professor. Awesome!!
When I first took this class, I was totally foreign to geography. I didn't do well for my first 2 exams even though I was studying, it was very hard to understand all the information given. Towards the end I approached Mr. Brian and told him my situation and asked if it was best for me to drop out. He looked over my situation and gave me my response, bottom line is he told me if I follow these instructions and continue to push myself and work with his T.A., that I was going to be ok. He didn't give up on me and so therefore, I didn't give up on myself. On my next exam I did extremely well and he emailed me to congratulate me. I thought that was awesome of him. I keep pushing till today and hope that at the end I am able to lift myself back up. I am super grateful he didn't let me give up on myself. Thanks Mr. Brian
Great job teaching this class, you really got me interested in Geography, I may change my Minor to this subject because I feel it will help me gain better knowledge in how the land works for my Landscape Architecture degree.
Dr. Szuster, if you're very concerned with attendance, I suggest you do attendance quizzes or iClicker checks. By not having these, you can't expect attendance numbers to be great all the time. Just a suggestion.
I liked that the tests were very reasonable and that the Professor was very nice and always helpful.
Pretty hard course
Course is good. Instructor is clearly well versed in his material, and the TA was very proactive about class study sessions before each exams which were nice.
Overall, great and enthusiastic professor!
Awesome Professor!!
Great class! Very informative and information will be useful in daily life.
I felt that the study guides and review sessions didn't quite prepare me enough for the test. The reviews and study guides were much more general than the test which often asked for very specific details that seemed glossed over.
Perhaps use iClickers for class envolvment & attendance.
Thank you for a great semester!
Professor Szuster is one of the BEST professors I ever had, highly energetic, enthusiastic, approachable, knows how to teach, and very nice. I will highly recommend this course to anyone.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Professor is enthusiastic, adds real-world anecdotes from his experience to lectures.
It made me think about tourism and its impacts on the destination
Class atmosphere and topics involved
Final Paper. I liked to be creative and put all learned information in context.
Appropriate / fai grading
Presenting on the tourism of a place/event of our choice.
Dark Tourism
I really enjoyed the course material and your teaching was stimulating and effective. I felt challenged and well received if I was having any problems.
i really like the presentation
Sustainable tourism
The professor makes the course really fun and his rich knowledge of the materials really helped us studied.
I enjoyed the lectures and cool videos professor would show us.
Student presentations
Professor is humor.
19. What changes would you make in the lectures?
I would like more new content that was not in the textbook--I often felt like, if I'd read the assigned reading, there was not much to gain from coming to class.
Make them a bit more clearer and not so fast
Possible incorporation of more visuals on the slides.
not much
They're all copied and pasted. Do less of that.
None.

I would have loved to have more case studies and more examples of types of tourism rather than theories of tourism cycles.
lectures are great
none
More fun facts/personal stories of the materials.
I would decrease the amount of time per presentation. Some classes would get boring because of long, boring presentations.
More videos
The essay part of the exam is little difficult.
20. Other comments:
I would really like to have seen more readings handed out after the textbook was completed. It felt like the class essentially finished around the end of October, which was disappointing.
Exams should not include the name of the people behind different concepts and theories. Especially when there are so many definitions and theories for the same concepts. I think We should only know the theory it self.
Enjoyed the class and actually took away important knowledge from the course.
null
Cool class.

i had a great semester
Probably one of my favorite classes in all four nice
Really nice class and professor. The professor is really nice and easy to talk to. He tried his best to bring up our grades and made the class fun.
Loved professor's sense of humor! LOL :D

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Dr. Szuster was always cheerful, enthusiastic, and knowledgable. I am nearly done with my degree and this class was one of the finest I ever attended! Slideshow presentations were relevant, current, and extremely well done.
The powerpoints from his lecture were always on laulima which was extremely helpful when studying for his exams. His powerpoints were also straightforward. Before exams, he would have a review session and also the TA would give a review session.
I liked all aspects of the course. Brian Szuster was very outgoing, fun, and friendly. He explained the materials in such a clear and straight forward manner that it was hard not to understand. He draws his students in and helps the understand the materials with his loud and strong voice.
The professor tried making lecture enjoyable. Simplified the course content and tried to give everyone willing to try a chance to earn the grade.
The course is a little challenging but easy at the same time. I am really glad that the exams are curved.
The whole thing.
none
I like the videos in the presentations. It gave a good visual and made it easier to understand the processes shown in the videos. I like that the grading system was clear and precise from the beginning. I also liked that grades from midterms were released quickly instead of having to wait weeks.
Powerpoint presentations with the animations were very effective. Too bad we can't view that part of the slides at home. I like that the course is all about attending class and listening to his lectures and then taking a test. And the exams are noncumulative!
The notes on his PowerPoint presentations were put on laulima in order for me to study and try to review myself.
The TA was very funny
Easy to follow powerpoints
I loved the lectures about the Earth and its processes, including topics like green energy (solar energy, Wind energy) and weather, as well as earth's processes like volcanism and tectonic movement.
Just going into lectures & listening to the professor. Along with going to the study sessions with the TA made it less stressful when the exams came.
Powerpoints were posted online. It made it a lot easier to study for exams.
Colorful power points that had all the important terms to know. Study sessions were very helpful!
The presentations
No comprehensive exams.
-The pace of the class, not too fast and not too slow -Spent good amount of time in class to review main topics for the exam -Szuster breaks difficult concepts down into more comprehensible and memorable ways
The organization of the material presented made it very easy to understand what was being taught.
Volcanoes, Earthquakes
I like that he posted each power point up on Laulima.
all
The fact that he broke down the lectures so that you could actually understand what he was talking about. And the fact that he encouraged questions was also great.
Powerpoints! Videos! Online text book! Multiple choice exams! Review sessions! No homework! Curved grades! Relation to Hawaii!
There weren't many aspects other than the lectures, but that's alright because the lectures were very well done and pretty entertaining.
Learning about volcanoes
Organization of power points
The lectures were interesting and engaging, and video resources and visuals were well used.
Class was straightforward and was able to learn a lot.
The lectures are supplemented by the powerpoints extremely well.
The powerpoints had all the information we needed. Some teachers do not have powerpoints full of information.
I enjoyed learning about the Earth processes.
The fact that he knew what he was teaching and passionate. It was a good experience in general. I actually learned about Geography
The study sessions run by Jaya for each exam were very helpful and enlightening when it came to preparation for the exams; they were a very good reference point.
I loved the fact that this course gave many awareness to environmental issues and how we can improve as a community. I especially was interested when the course went over current event situations and how it relates back to us in the future.
The audiovisual materials used during lectures made the lectures easy to follow and understand. The study sessions were also very helpful for the exams.
The info on Hawaii was cool
All aspects were interesting.
I really liked the style of testing, nothing was cumulative so each test was about the material you had just learned about.
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
None
The material itself, personally I thought it was boring and I wasn't very interested in it. But, the professor did somewhat help in making it a little less boring.
I liked all aspects of the course.
The material is not my area of interest and simply a requisite for my major.
The only aspect I like the least is that the study guides for the exams are not very specific. Therefore, the study guides are not a very big help when preparing for the exam.
none
the powerpoints were very wordy. Maybe cut down on the words and only put important concepts on the slides that you know will be on the final. I felt like only half the material in the slides were on the midterms.
I can't think of anything.
I wasn't sure exactly what would be on the test so I'd have to study everything and end up remembering some details that weren't on the test and forgetting details that were.
Too much course material taught each lecture... tons to read
Humidity, condensation processes, and definitely topics dealing with the atmosphere.
Nothing...
The textbook. I did not use the textbook much
None
Probably the difficulty of the tests, but those were okay
Little boring during some topics.
Humidity
I disliked how hard the Exam's were. I honestly felt like I was stupid because I was studying exactly what was on his power points yet when I did the exams my answer were not the right ones yet I STUDIED THE HIS POWER POINTS!!! This fustrated me a lot its like none of the answer were even correct on his exams and he was just try to trick us.. Nice teacher but his exams honestly need to be change because they do not at all reflect what he is teaching.
Plate tectonics
N/A
The 3rd exam was the most difficult, too much memorization!
As cliche'd as it sounds, the tests.
Trying to take in all the information at one time
The material covered in class and on the study guide did not help prepare me for exams. Exams were not entirely a test of basic material and terms but went dramatically into depth. Questions also would be phrase like: which of the following is an example of(this term)? then the options would consit of a variety of real life examples that were not mentioned in class and that I had never heard of in my life.
N/A, good course.
I think it would help if there were homework assignments.
I personally feel like the core info of the class could be a bit more engaging.
N/A
I least enjoyed learning about the winds.
Amount of midterms.
Sometimes I wish that the text readings weren't so compacted into one week; two chapters or so in one week is a bit much combined with readings for my other classes. Additionally, I was caught off guard when the reading schedule in the syllabus was changed because I had already laid out the previous reading schedule in my planner.
The course was quite fast pace and I guess it would have been better if we were given the chance to go over the power points a little more thoroughly.
I feel like the exams, regardless of how much I've studied, were very difficult.
The test multiful choice is tricky
None.
Nothing

Dr. Szuster is an asset to UHM! I really was impressed with the quality of his teaching style.
Fun and interesting class. You gain a lot of knowledge about the world around you. Great class.
Great instructor and TA. Course is excellent.
Overall, I have learned a lot throughout this semester.
Nice guy.
Overall good class.
Professor Szuster is very down to earth and a joy to learn from. I would take another class from him if I could.
Overall, I find Professor Szuster's class very enjoyable, but it is sometimes unclear as to what we really have to know for the exams which make up our entire grade. I like the fact that Professor Szuster comes in prepared, organized, and teaches with passion in what he loves. He's very clear at explaining things, but yet again, sometimes it's unclear as to whether some of the powerpoint presentations were worth looking at.

FIX EXAMS! I don't understand how so much people fail them yet he tells us to study the power point slides that he teaches! Super fucking annoying when your trying your best in a class and it seems like nothing you do helps.
Good class, learned a lot. A little too advanced for an introductory course. Too much content material! Too specific information!
Good professor, but exams, studyguide and help from TA need to be fixed or improved
Dr. Szuster is enthusiastic and always very helpful and understanding.
Great Class to take it is important to attend lectures and realize the situation our world is in as of now.
N/A
Overall a very well put together class.
Taken with GEOG101L (the lab), I felt I got a very comprehensive understanding of the basics of geography as the lab could cover some concepts more in detail than Dr. Szuster could alone in lecture. It helped enormously when it came to midterms.
Although the exams are difficult, they are still do-able and I enjoyed attending this class.
I hope the curve is in my favor
Very clear and straight forward class.
Loved taking geography from Professor Szuster. He's an amazing guy, who has a clear passion for his work. I am thoroughly glad I signed up for his class. Also he remembers his students and takes the time to email us about our progress, and I appreciate that.

Multiple choice exams
everything
I most enjoyed how the lectures were structured, they were set up in a nice way that emphasized the important points we needed to take from each lecture.
The powerpoints are a great help to my study.
I liked how common-sense the class was. If I just thought about the materials in relation to the real world, it generally made a lot of sense.
The material is interesting, and the professor is engaging.
Overall, this class was pretty interesting and Professor Szuster is a nice and patient instructor. I liked the subject matter and that Professor Szuster throws in a joke or two to keep the class attentive and upbeat.
Brian and Jaya are both great instructors. Both are committed accessable and generous on top of being enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed this class. The lab was very good, interesting and helped reinforce the material. Nice job, thanks Brian and Jaya!
Lectures are always interesting to listen to. Szuster is a great professor and very knowledgeable of the subject. Material was always easy to understand and PowerPoints had great visuals. Szuster connects with his students and is very approachable for help.
I like the organization overall. The lectures provide important information that we need to know. The exams are not a surprise, asking questions that we should know the answer to because it was given during lectures.
Brian made difficult concepts more accessible for me, which is helpful because I'm usually terrible at science. I also enjoyed his humor, enthusiasm, and ability to relate to students. He seems to like his job and doesn't come across as a stiff, academic type. The grading curve is also a godsend.
I liked learning about rocks.
Brian was a really funny teacher and he was very good at explaining subjects. I woul recommend him to anyone interested in geography.
I liked all of the aspects of the course.
The power points .
Videos and moving picture diagram things
Nice and enthusiastic teacher that really cares for students.
all the powerpoints were up on laulima
The visuals
I liked Dr. Szuster's grading system and the study sessions that are available before the exams which are really helpful.
Powerpoints were uploaded to laulima, have them side by side with the notes during class.
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
none
Lots of information to remember, though it is a science course, so that was to be expected.
The course can get boring sometimes.
Sometime there was a confusing question on the exams that wasn't fully covered in lecture. But my overall scores were pretty high, so I can't really complain.
The class grade is based only on midterms, and I wish there could be more points to earn other than just on the midterm exams.
I think the grading system is okay, but I don't really like how I can't know my exact standing throughout the course. I only know the "gist" of it. Instead of doing an overall curve, is it possible to have each exam have it's own curve? I don't know. It would just be nice to have definite standings throughout the course.
No aspect was unenjoyable. I wish the animations used in lectures were available for study outside of the lectures.
I wish there was extra credit available.
I like the grading because the exams are tough. It is fair.
Cramming for exams is never fun, and it's quite challenging to remember a lot of terms and concepts. Some of the exam questions were worded and/or paraphrased in a way that clashed with my memorization of the PowerPoint slides.
The time hat the class was at was inconvenient for me.
I think the class is set up exactly how it should be. I just wish the slides that had videos were easily accessible out side I class.
I found all of the aspects that were taught in this course to be interesting, so I do not have one that I liked the least.
The tests were pretty hard.
The power-points weren't too great in explanation should try to make it a little more clear. The power-points were too colorful, a bit distracting.
lecture could have been more interesting
How full of words each slide was
There is none that I could think of.
The animations were unavailable to practice and use.
18. Other comments:
good professor! i like how he actually looks at his students' score improvements :)
The text book is good. I wish it were hard bound as it is one I will likely keep for reference. I am sure many students prefer the savings. Perhaps the book store could offer both? I wish I had looked online for a hardcover copy.
Overall, it was a decent class. I'm feeling more passionate about geography than I expected to be. To future students, choose Brian over the other faculty for 101.
If at the bottom of each slide there could be a small number so it would e easier to take notes.... Just an idea
Dr. Szuster is a great and outgoing professor who is always willing to help students out. He seems to really understand his topic and tries to explain it in an enthusiastic manner even though sometimes the topics are long and tedious. Overall, Dr. Szuster is a great guy and is clear on what is expected from his students especially on the exams.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Love how incorporates photos from different countries and cultures that I may never experience. Also appreciate your understanding that we have lives outside of UH and not making attendance mandatory.
Material was clearly laid out and discussed.
I like how we are required to present our own presentations on tourist destinations of our choice.
Presentation on destination is fun way to know the classmates and different places. lecture power point are very clear and easy to use for study for exams.
He actually has good power points that aren't boring and he stays on top of posting them on Laulima so we can follow along or catch up if we missed.
The course integrated components of the environment and socio-economic issues. The subject matter linked together problems and offered solutions. The course textbook was only a supplement as Professor Szuster provided slides and extra readings as the majority of our education. The last assignment, trying to get us to think critically and apply what we learn was a great end to the semester.
The main objectives of the class were to learn about tourism on a global aspect. I loved learning about the different cultures and their tourism system.
interesting lectures
relevance of the key driver of Hawaii's economy; diversity of tourism based on location; reviews for exams
Everything
It was interesting, since I got to learn about different types of tourism
I liked they way he presented the information as well as how he prepared us for the tests.
 presentations
No attendance
Everything!:)
the course materials were really interesting to me that i could learn a lot of new things.
Lecture
I enjoyed the presentations that each student had to do on a destination of their choice.
Very fair. Organized and doesn't try to screw you over. Very understanding.
The course content was informative as well as challenging. The info was extremely important to me and my academic journey. I am really grateful to have been able to attend his classes. Mahalo nui loa Prof. Szuster !!! Gary
Learning about the different destinations around the world and effects of the tourism industry at each of theses destinations.
19. What changes would you make in the lectures?
Nothing comes to mind. Love how power points are online. Great class structure.
I would include videos as much as possible. Some people are more visual learners.
I did not feel 50 minutes/3 times in a week class schedule is good for this course. longer class period may be better for this course. it would be more interesting and easy to remember if student presentation organized to connected to the current lecture subject.
His reviews for exams can be a little more organized.
As a 300 level course, the material and goals were sufficient.
I would make the lectures more engaging and interactive.

greatest professor ever!!!
Great semester. Thanks!
I learned much more than I expected, and the course has changed the way I see tourism. Thank you!
Great teacher, very positive and seems to really enjoy his work and passing on his knowledge to students.
solid class
overall, very enjoyable and enlightening course taught by a passionate, knowledgable instructor
Merry Christmas!
Great job teaching this course! Would definitely recommend it to other TIM students looking for another elective!
fun class.
Great class! Brian is an awesome teacher and made the class a lot more fun and interesting! Highly recommend him
I liked this class. it was easy going and he made class atmosphere fun. and I really learned new subjects. I would recommend the class to my friends.
During exams, professor should have tables clear of everything. I saw a student with her phone out using it during all 3 of the exams. Very disappointed with that student.
We need more professors like this perhaps at the TIM school. Professor Szuster embraces the learning aspect of education rather than having students memorize a bunch of random nothing for an exam and totally forgetting about it. He also makes you think about concepts that relate to real world. Awesome class.
Mahalo Prof.!!!
Professor was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the material which made it easier to learn

I think the class is really good, and I learned a valuable tool that I may be able to use in the future.
This is one of the most useful course I have taken as a DURP student. It is very applicable to my future professional goals. I am so happy I was able to take this course.
This course should be mandatory for all DURP students

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
volcanoes and earthquakes.
I really enjoyed learning about volcanoes and earthquakes.
I think certain parts of geography are quite interesting. I liked when Professor Szuster discussed concepts as they related to Hawaii in particular; I'm glad I learned more about possible problems we may face with earthquakes and hurricanes, for example. This course was definitely informative, and I think I will remember some concepts for a while.
I enjoyed learning about the specifics of Hawaii's climate.
Great professor and interesting material. The visuals the professor used really helped the class understand the topics. It was my favorite course this semester!
The lectures and the videos
I liked the videos a lot because it helped me understand the concepts and it was engaging.
I really appreciated the videos hat were one along with the lecture. It really helped me to understand what was being taught.
lectures & videos :)
I liked Professor Szuster's enthusiasm for the course and the large use of examples.
He has a very Good teaching style. He is good at knowing where students are confused and he uses that to explain some topics with more detail. So it's as though we have questions but he answers them in his lecture. If there are any questions he is really good about explaining the answer.
his concept of teaching
The lectures
great professor. i love his character and enthusiasm.
I liked everything about the course. Professor Szuster was very enthusiastic about the material and always explained difficult to understand concepts in a simpler way so I could better understand it.
I enjoyed coming to class and learning everyday!
I liked that Brian Szuster uploaded the Power Points before hand so that you could follow along while he lectured. Also, all materials covered sparked a general interest and good to know for common knowledge rather than being super boring and having to take it. Love that he grades on a curve. Without it, I'd probably fail or close to fail the class.
I liked that there was no homework and that all the lectures were posted online. I really enjoyed the videos.
Love the teacher! Awesome Class! Awesome content!
Mid-terms focused on the last section of lectures covered and were not cumulative.
I liked that he did such good review sessions, those are what made me understand the best.
Some movies that are related to the subject. I could see the actions happening and how would that affect people all over and how we can't predict when it will hit us.
The videos were very engaging. The Professor was energetic and friendly (always a smile on his face). I appreciated not being rushed during exams and having the time to think each question over.
I enjoyed the course as a whole. Brian Szuster is an awesome professor.
I liked the whole course.
Power points and the videos/pictures that demonstrated what we were talking about in class.
Teachers enthusiasm.
slides were provided online
He made it interesting.
that the power points were posted on laulima because then my attendance wasn't very necessary to pass the class.
Power points
The videos and animations in the slides.
did not grade on attendance
He was very energetic and kept interest high.
The powerpoints were online if we forgot some information or wanted to review
That we would do a brief review of what we covered in the previous class.
The enthusiasm of professor Szuster.
Friendly environment, easy to understand lectures.
Brian Szuster was an effective, engaging teacher with passion for the material. Complex subjects were explained thoroughly and I came out of the class with a solid knowledge and foundation of material I did not go in with.
The course was very informative and I enjoyed learning the various geographical and geological concepts of the Earth. I am very glad I took this course, even if it was simply an introductory one.
I enjoyed going to Professor Szuster's lectures. Some days he would show us very interesting videos. My favorite ones were the tsunami and volcano ones. These videos were great in that they gave me a much better understanding of the material we just learned.
videos and documentaries
Pro S, passion and off hand knowledge.
no comment
That he had powerpoint presentations to help us visualize what he was talking about.
Mr. Szuster's enthusiasm and love for geography really showed. He also was very clear and knowledgable about the subject. Love the pre test review. Challenging course because of the amount of material, but well worth it. Learned so much.
The steady rate of learning was extremely helpful. I always knew what to expect, so no terrifying surprises.
Well done PowerPoints, and it was helpful that they were posted online also.

EVERYTHING
The way he is enthusiastic about teaching this course. He comes in a happy mood and sets the mood for the whole class. Also, it's great that he shows animation to show greater understanding on the topics he teaches.
21. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
climate and weather patterns.
I did not really like climate changes.
Although I do appreciate Professor's efforts to make things easier on us--by grading tests on a curve--I think that they made the course a little too easy. I think he can continue to curve grades, but he might consider doing it a little differently; I think he should generate the curves in the more traditional way. I don't want to necessarily spoil it for later Geography 101 students, but I sometimes don't appreciate that a person who actually got a much lower numeric score than I did is able to get the same A grade that I did. I don't think it's fair for students who would do well without the curve. Again, I do appreciate that there is a curve, though--it provides a good safety net.
The curved grading system, although fair, dissuaded me from doing my very best work.
Good course, liked all aspects.
I did not like the test because the first two exams seemed to be a little bit too hard in my perspective. Although, it is a little better that he curves the scores.
There was nothing that I really didn't like. It was a good class all in all.
n/a :)
It was a fun class to go to everyday. He loves what he does and he makes that very apparent. So there wasn't any specific thing that I didn't like about this course.
Attending classes is almost pointless because Szuster moves through his powerpoints too quickly during class for me to keep up and the powerpoints can be viewed online anyway.
nothing, all was good
Reading
nothing
I disliked that we only had exams to depend on for our grade.
none!
I didn't like that we are only graded on exams. There's no room for error or to make back your grade at least a little because no extra credit is given.
The TA. She's supposed to be there to help us, but the study groups did not make any sense. She should help us and no expect us to come with questions.
None!
Too much to memorize for each test.
Maybe too long but I wasn't very interested in physical geography.
The PowerPoints are far too wordy and individual slides often have information overload - overwhelming.
The tests. And long lectures, sometimes too much info for one day of class but I understand that we needed to cover a lot of material.
The course in general... Geography is terribly boring... I am forced by the school to take these classes that don't help me in any way towards my major and degree...
final grade was based off of four exams. no extra credit
Taking tests; not the tests themselves, just taking them.
It was really boring and a lot of material to cover when very little of it was actually on the test. Also, the grading on the curve may not be as fair as it should be.
Lectures. The lectures didnʻt really help that much because he didnʻt really give us examples of what he was talking about in class. When TA was asked a question, she couldnʻt answer straight forward.
It can get confusing with all the different aspects.
nothing
too much slides
The lectures.
it was fine
The Tests, just for the fact that those were the only assignments counting towards our grades. Also that attendance was not mandatory and I felt since he did post the lectures online that some credit should have been given for attendance.
The tempo of the classes was a bit too high and ometimes much information. The exams were pretty hard for being a 100 level class.
only lectures. There were no other teaching methods, sometimes is got boring,
Professor Szuster does not upload the presentation slides to Laulima on a timely basis, but it is understandable due to his work load. Please take care of yourself, Professor.
I really enjoyed this course and can't find anything negative to say about it.
Learning about wind.

The class size...
Some questions on the test were worded a little strange.
the 150 people in one class gets annoying with people randomly talking and being inconsiderate
NOTHING
The least that I didn't enjoy was the inconvenient times that study sessions were held on.

This was a very challenging class, but I really enjoyed it.
Professor Szuster is likeable and good-humored. He is good at narrowing the focus of the topics, as well--the textbook was very detailed, and the chapters were a little long. I also appreciate that right before we had a test, he would tell us exactly what concepts we should know. This practice was very helpful, and I think it helped reduce the strain on the students.
Overall, the class was decent. It was a good course to learn the overview of the world and natural occurrences.
I really appreciate the humor. It made class more interesting
highly recommended! :) he is an awesome teacher! explains material well!
Brian Szuster is a great teacher and I would recommend him to anyone interested in the class. He makes it fun and his personality shines through. Sometimes the lectures may seem boring, but that only depends on the students' initial effort and state of mind; positivity! Fun class, just wish there was some extra credit!
Professor Szuster was very fun.
Highly Recommended! Please let Brian teach all GEOG 101 classes.
Geography is not my passionate, but this class has made me look at the world in a different way. I think the class would benefit from more student-teacher interaction. The Professor would do well to involve and engage the students more with questions.
Teacher is absolutely great! But I feel that students shouldn't have to take other courses that are not directly related towards their majors... Such as this one...
Great class.
good class, i learned a lot about everyday life
I feel a better review of the exams are in order. I felt somewhat hashed at during the exams.
Thank you! This really helped me in my lab and I learned a lot.
I wish all my professors could be like Professor Szuster!
Mr.Suzster was very helpful and effective. He helped a lot during office hours.
overall great course

17. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The powerpoint lectures given by Szuster are the best part of the course. The EIA group project was a good intermediary break. The powerpoints had good visuals that kept the student's interest.
szuster keeps lectures entertaining and interesting.
The powerpoints were helpful in communicating the content of the class. The course is a clear way of learning about EISs
I like that he often refer concepts to real life case studies to provide examples
Dr. Brian Szuster really made this course as great as it was. His personal expieriences and his vast knowledge of the topic helps him teach the important material. He is cool, very approachable, and willing to help out anybody who needs it.
Understanding a very important process in land use and development.
Lectures were informative. You could definitively tell that Prof. Szuster had lots of professional experience in field of Environmental Assessments. Questions and Comments by students during the lecture were always welcomed.
His teaching. He was a great teacer.
18. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The superferry paper. I wish that it could have been on any project of our choice. I felt tempted to summarize and discuss the policy and judiciary side of environmental assessment than the process of EIA's. I would prefer an assignment that lets us try to do a mini EIS instead.
not many.
I didn't like the research portions in some aspects as the materials are a bit much and narrowing it down to certain points are a bit vaque.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
All
Classes were well organized and concepts were discussed practically. Information was also available on Laulima for review.
his general knowledge and excitement for the class made everyone pay attention!
I enjoy the way this class is structured. The paper is a good way to further understand what the course material and our presentations were about.
The diversity of projects, the relevant nature of the topics, the teacher was an awesome canuck.
The topics are great; they are very informative. Writing papers are good, too, because we need to improve our skills. Plus, presentations are a good way to get used to public speaking and improve skills in that area.
The paper and the presentation, althought they were extra work I feel they are better then exams
Great content. Szuster is a wonderful teacher.
his powerpoints very well done professor was organized knowledgeable intriguing always willing to help
Powerpoint class presentations shared through Laulima to study from. In future to have these available during class to write in notes would be beneficial. Case studies, videos & supplemental material supported what was taught in class & very helpful for learning.
I liked the hands on activities such as scoping exercises as well as the case studies.
videos
I really enjoyed the presentation as we were able to conduct more research into the EIA topic and relate the material with our research for a better understanding. It is a great approach. I also really enjoyed the guess speakers.
The case studies were interesting (shrimp farming)
I liked the group project and presentation because it allows students to see examples of what this course was all about. It helped me understand what an EIS is and what it contain, and seeing other group's EIS showed what really worked and what did not work in the EIS process.
Good overall course. I like the way the class was run with everything for the semester known from the start.
I liked that he was really thorough through out the whole course but cut out the stuff that was not needed.
The history and concepts as well as method and techniques in environmental assessments.
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
N/A
Heavy amount of power point information
the student presentation, even though it was easy, only because i hate group work.
There are a lot of power points
Nothing class was pretty solid
Can't think of any.
exams
Sometimes too much powerpoint. Professor Szuster did a very nice job of presenting & is a great speaker, so the powerpoints were not too overwhelming.
I thought the course was great.
Although Brian was an great enthusiastic teacher some of the material was very dry and hard to conceptualize.
none all aspects were great
I liked the 5 page paper the least. Instead of a paper I would have liked another group project like making a short version of an EA/EIS or another case study presentation.
Nothing really bad

Professor Szuster portrays enthusiasm for the course material. It's always a plus to see a professor that's excited about his work. As such, he was able to communicate in an effective manner which allowed some of his enthusiasm to rub off on the students. I recommend that he teaches the 413 class as well.
Class was very clear, smooth, well paced, and very good.
I really enjoyed this class, Brian's teaching style, and feel like I learned a great deal on the topics.
szuster is awesome, i'd love to take another course with him!
Great course...
Keep this class....its definitely needed

great course and a great teacher with a great personality I'm happy I took this class
GOOD Class, Great Teacher. Learned concpets that I will use in futurejobs/carreer.
his powerpoints very well done professor was organized knowledgeable intriguing always willing to help tough grader but learned a lot
Thank you, I've learned a lot in this course & the material will be very beneficial to my profession & future studies.
Brian is an enthusiastic instructor and i really enjoyed his class
Great professor, just wish there were more courses offered by Mr. Szuster dealing with undergraduate into the environment and law.
Interesting course that provided important knowledge about Environmental Impact Statements and the components that they are made up of. I enjoyed this course and learned a lot.
Great and interesting class. I learned a lot.
The teacher explained material very well. The Case Studies he showed were also very helpful

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Group presentations, instructor presentations, guest speakers, length, time, location, video...great course.
I liked learning about the different EIS that the class groups presented.
Very good info on EIA
sample case study such as SUPPERFERRY
Comprehensive coverage of the course topic with sufficient detail for an overview course. Dr. Szuster is among the best instructors I've had at UH (and overall); compared with others I've had at UH he was very effective and fair in his teaching and assessment. I would rather have an instructor like him, who will grade critically, and risk not getting an A then the average UH prof (who gives everyone an A because they cannot teach). It was very interesting to get the one day, half-a-class, overview of his PhD research, tied into the course material.
The presentation assignment was a good opportunity to examine and analyze actual examples of assessments even though not all of the presentations were fully informative.
Very good instructor.
This is really new to me. Through the class, I understand the basic knowledge of EIA in the U.S. and in the world. I will develop my skills on the field of EIA as the important role of it to sustainable development.
The organization and clarity of each topic. I left the class understanding each step of the EIA process; or at least the purpose and definitions behind it.
The case studies/presentations.
Use of slides for teaching was effective and interesting.
I liked the case study about the Superferry the best.
I enjoyed the student case studies as they provided insight into the variety of issues that can arise in the environmental assessment process. I also liked the practical exercises that we went through in class. Brian was able to relate his own professional experience to the aspects of EIS that we were studying.
I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the class. I felt that there was enough assignments to supplement and better understand the lectures but not too much such that we would be drowned in work.
I liked that the course was well organized and the goals and objectives were clearly stated. Also having the due date for the final paper be in late november was helpful. The precis were useful because they allowed us to organize our thoughts in a concise manner. Also having the presentations on laulima helped because it is often overwhelming to try and take notes in class and having the ability to double check online was great.
I liked the assignment where we studied a past EIA case study. This allowed for a critical understanding of the process and production of an EIA.
Teacher's enthusiasm encouraged my interest in the subject; I really liked his theory on preparing for the final exam (precis assignments)
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The precis articles were hard to understand sometimes because they were repetitive (within one article)
Not much interaction between students
PRESENTATION
I would have liked to hear more about EIAs on which Dr. Szuster has worked or knows about. It was great to have so many student presentations on so many EIAs, but more case studies from the prof. would have been good too.
The text was not great.
There lacked applicability to the every day scene. The group presentations helped incorporate EIA today; however, perhaps a class lecture that focused on more EIA's and how a specific project would undergo an EIA would have helped to better understand the steps. Although this was just an intro level class.
I did not appreciate the way a few students constantly talked while Professor Szuster was talking.
Nothing.
I disliked the reading. Many of the articles rambled and did not have good focus.
Sometimes the lectures were a bit long and drawn out. There was a lot of content to cover, and a high number of students in the class so discussion was left to a relative minimum.
I wish this course could have been more discussion oriented rather than lecture style.
With such a large class it was hard to create a discussion environment. This would hel palot i think.
Size of class made it hard for us to get a "hands on" experience
20. Other comments:
The mix of students from different places and disciplines was enjoyable.
He did a good job
Well worth my time, money, and effort.
Good course. I know what is EIA now...:-)
I am excited for future students to participate in the 700 level EIA course that Dr. Szuster is planning.
The course is quite useful and i like to take advance course if it will be available as discussed in the last class.
I really enjoyed this class, and hope that the Geography department strongly considers developing some sort of EIS practicum.
In class we discussed having a class that would be part II to this class that would allow us to have more hands on experience with EIAs. I think that this is a great idea and something that i would definitely sign up for.
It was a really good coure that teeaches the basics of the EIA practice. Very useful in my future development as an Architect.
