16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Material was organized and flowed well into each subsequent lecture.
I enjoy having a class I know I'm going to have a good time in and Vin was an enjoyable TA to have. I also feel like he understood where us as students were coming from more so than other professors.
I really really enjoyed having Brian Szuster as my profesor. Even though this class did not take attendance, I came to class everyday because Brian made the class fun and enjoyable! I loved coming to class:)
I liked that the tests followed what we learned in class. What we had to study was clear cut, and well reviewed for those who attended the lectures.
I liked the general information i learned from each section. Some things really helped me understand the earth's environment and how it functions.
That it was mostly memorization.
Brian Szuster is knowledgeable and he gives us a better understand of the course content. I learned a lot of interesting things in this class about the weathers, seasons, earthquakes, tsunami... and how all the things happen. I think they are basic knowledge that I should know and I am glad that I understand them better.

I liked that the course was directed towards the geography of Hawai'i when applicable.
The videos for certain chapters. Those helped me engage my interest further in this course.
Learning about volcanos.
I liked how Professor Szuster was able to incorporate and relate the material we were learning to events that happen in our world today. In addition, the way he explains some of the harder concepts made it easy to understand.

Not a clear study guide. whats wrong with having a vocabulary sheet of what will be on the test?
I had a misconception about this class being primarily about geography and how the movement of demographics affected the topology of earth. I think I was just a tad disappointed that there wasn't much mention of how humans openly affect geography. Still, I liked the lessons as they were very informative, especially on current geographical events.
The curve is by far too generous. Let the students who don't put in the effort pay the consequences.
There is a lot of information covered and the tests do not reflect half of the information learned/gone over. It makes for a very difficult time studying.
Szusters tests can prove to be difficult. I believe that he asks fair questions, but also throws in some out of the blue questions that are up to your best guess. These questions always felt as if they hurt my grade on tests. I am glad he curves the class, but I can't say if the curve is effective yet or not since the class isn't finished.

The Tests
I have taken numerous science courses at UH Manoa, 100 level through 400 level courses. Even though this course is a 100 level course, I still studied for the exams just as much as my 400 level classes, if not more, and I felt as if the exams did not fairly cover the material that was covered in class lectures. I attended every lecture and I feel as if my hard work and punctuality was not justified. I do believe I am getting a high B with his curve, but that is unsatisfactory for my expectations. He is very knowledgeable and means well, I just felt like the exams were poorly written.

its hard to hear his voice if i sit in the back of classroom
Overall test average for all exams was very low, so maybe the study guide (or exam, etc.) should be revised. Even when students (like me, normally an A student) studied very hard, the results were not satisfactory.
Speak with a microphone please, also if there are going to be study guides, I think its more helpful for it to have a question format instead of just a summary of concepts. It seemed to muddled and vague that way.

The power points as well as the teachers interests in the subject matter.
The Hawaii studies.
I like his simulations on his powerpoints. It made it easier to understand the different activities of our environment. His videos also increased my interest in the subject.
Learning about plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and of course how our beautiful rocks are formed.

The professor was a very nice man. He communicated very effectively. The curve was fairly generous.
I liked that the slides were available online and explained in more detail in class.
Professor is helpful
Professor was easy to understand and follow in lectures and easy to take notes in. Not too hard of a course but not too east, it was a good course for an incoming freshman to get adapted to college life.
The power points were online for us to study from. Professor Szuster is EXCELLENT at explaining complicated things in a simple way.
I liked the assisting study guides and the power points all had access on Laulima, that helped me take notes in class since I like to go paperless and save paper.
Videos and movies
I liked the side information he provided such as his service announcements.
I liked the lava section and learning about the different types of volcanos.
The subject of Geography doesn't appeal to me personally but if you are interested you the course is great for those who enjoy learning about volcanoes, tornadoes, and other phenomenons such as these.

I liked how passionate Brian was about the material. He also took an interest when he saw a student made progress in the class.
Brian knows his material very well (I mean, as he should) but ok my opinion, even if he's mentioned that he has taught this class for so many years he doesn't teach the course as if he's tired of it, it's more of he's pretty up beat with the information. The power points were very helpful and available after class, his TA can always make herself available, the videos were very helpful and entertaining to watch, and the curve really helps too!

Non-Attendance based

The professor was always happy and excited to teach the content, it made class so much more enjoyable and made me want to learn more
The grades are based on a class curve.
What i enjoyed about this course is the professor, Brian is such a fun teacher, he is so personable, has a great sense of humor, he knows his material and is really passionate about it. If you get to know him and if you as a student develop that student-teacher relationship he will try his best to make sure you understand the material, and if needed meet up with him during after class hours and discuss your understanding in the material to prepare you for the exam. I was so close to dropping the class, because i felt like i wasn't doing so well, but after i spoke with him, we planned to meet up before every exam and discuss my understanding about the material that is going to be in the exam, and with that I've improved my exam scores, compared to the passed I've taken. Brian really cares about his students, although as the semester went more and more students left and not come to class unless we have an exam, but ultimately they were missing out key materials that is in the exam, so don't miss class, why would you.
The lectures and powerpoint presentations were easy to follow and the concepts were explained as best as possible.

The subject of geography is boring
Even though the class size was small, there was not an atmosphere for asking questions. Also I think having your grade solely rely on exam scores is silly. There should have been some sort of extra credit, attendance, etc. HE had a TA but she didn't even do anything. With the small class size, TA, there should have been more room for tasks to help people who are not the best test takers. On top of that it was completely multiple choice, which is often confusing. The test should include something else.
I couldn't make study sessions because of the time.
TA session is pretty much useless
Nothing to complain about, it's education, not going to be like going to a waterpark.
That my classmates did not respect the course. I LOVED GEOG101!
What I didn't like was the class disengagement, but then again, this is a beginning level class and most students take this just because its and easy class where as I wanted to take it to learn.

I did not like the climate part, what the first exam covered.
Grade system of only 4 exams to determine entire course grade was stressful.
I didn't really use the book. I felt like t was a waste to buy it.

That the class was made up entirely of exams and no homework.

I didn't like how most of the powerpoint had information that weren't on the tests. It was hard to sift through the content.

The fact that it's non attendance and yet the professor said that if more people don't show up, class notes will not be given out anymore. I understand that it's an incredibly nice gesture by the professor to post notes outside of class, but for the attendance thing; probably shouldn't make attendance optional and be surprised if people don't show up. As someone who had to miss many classes due to personal issues, I am very grateful the professor put the class notes up outside of class.
It was not easy to understand what the point was for each topic.

Perhaps use iClickers for class envolvment & attendance.
Dr. Szuster, if you're very concerned with attendance, I suggest you do attendance quizzes or iClicker checks. By not having these, you can't expect attendance numbers to be great all the time. Just a suggestion.
When I first took this class, I was totally foreign to geography. I didn't do well for my first 2 exams even though I was studying, it was very hard to understand all the information given. Towards the end I approached Mr. Brian and told him my situation and asked if it was best for me to drop out. He looked over my situation and gave me my response, bottom line is he told me if I follow these instructions and continue to push myself and work with his T.A., that I was going to be ok. He didn't give up on me and so therefore, I didn't give up on myself. On my next exam I did extremely well and he emailed me to congratulate me. I thought that was awesome of him. I keep pushing till today and hope that at the end I am able to lift myself back up. I am super grateful he didn't let me give up on myself. Thanks Mr. Brian

Pretty hard course
The course felt a little more like geology to me as I had learned quite a few of these topics last year in my senior geology class in high school
Professor Szuster is one of the BEST professors I ever had, highly energetic, enthusiastic, approachable, knows how to teach, and very nice. I will highly recommend this course to anyone.
Great job teaching this class, you really got me interested in Geography, I may change my Minor to this subject because I feel it will help me gain better knowledge in how the land works for my Landscape Architecture degree.
Course is good. Instructor is clearly well versed in his material, and the TA was very proactive about class study sessions before each exams which were nice.

I liked that the tests were very reasonable and that the Professor was very nice and always helpful.
I felt that the study guides and review sessions didn't quite prepare me enough for the test. The reviews and study guides were much more general than the test which often asked for very specific details that seemed glossed over.

The presentations
The professor tried making lecture enjoyable. Simplified the course content and tried to give everyone willing to try a chance to earn the grade.
There weren't many aspects other than the lectures, but that's alright because the lectures were very well done and pretty entertaining.
The info on Hawaii was cool
Powerpoint presentations with the animations were very effective. Too bad we can't view that part of the slides at home. I like that the course is all about attending class and listening to his lectures and then taking a test. And the exams are noncumulative!
The TA was very funny
The powerpoints from his lecture were always on laulima which was extremely helpful when studying for his exams. His powerpoints were also straightforward. Before exams, he would have a review session and also the TA would give a review session.
The fact that he knew what he was teaching and passionate. It was a good experience in general. I actually learned about Geography
Class was straightforward and was able to learn a lot.
I enjoyed learning about the Earth processes.
The course is a little challenging but easy at the same time. I am really glad that the exams are curved.

The notes on his PowerPoint presentations were put on laulima in order for me to study and try to review myself.

The lectures were interesting and engaging, and video resources and visuals were well used.
I like the videos in the presentations. It gave a good visual and made it easier to understand the processes shown in the videos. I like that the grading system was clear and precise from the beginning. I also liked that grades from midterms were released quickly instead of having to wait weeks.
I loved the lectures about the Earth and its processes, including topics like green energy (solar energy, Wind energy) and weather, as well as earth's processes like volcanism and tectonic movement.
All aspects were interesting.
Just going into lectures & listening to the professor. Along with going to the study sessions with the TA made it less stressful when the exams came.
The lectures are supplemented by the powerpoints extremely well.
Dr. Szuster was always cheerful, enthusiastic, and knowledgable. I am nearly done with my degree and this class was one of the finest I ever attended! Slideshow presentations were relevant, current, and extremely well done.

The audiovisual materials used during lectures made the lectures easy to follow and understand. The study sessions were also very helpful for the exams.

I liked all aspects of the course. Brian Szuster was very outgoing, fun, and friendly. He explained the materials in such a clear and straight forward manner that it was hard not to understand. He draws his students in and helps the understand the materials with his loud and strong voice.

The material itself, personally I thought it was boring and I wasn't very interested in it. But, the professor did somewhat help in making it a little less boring.

The only aspect I like the least is that the study guides for the exams are not very specific. Therefore, the study guides are not a very big help when preparing for the exam.
Sometimes I wish that the text readings weren't so compacted into one week; two chapters or so in one week is a bit much combined with readings for my other classes. Additionally, I was caught off guard when the reading schedule in the syllabus was changed because I had already laid out the previous reading schedule in my planner.
I disliked how hard the Exam's were. I honestly felt like I was stupid because I was studying exactly what was on his power points yet when I did the exams my answer were not the right ones yet I STUDIED THE HIS POWER POINTS!!! This fustrated me a lot its like none of the answer were even correct on his exams and he was just try to trick us.. Nice teacher but his exams honestly need to be change because they do not at all reflect what he is teaching.

Questions also would be phrase like: which of the following is an example of(this term)? then the options would consit of a variety of real life examples that were not mentioned in class and that I had never heard of in my life.
I wasn't sure exactly what would be on the test so I'd have to study everything and end up remembering some details that weren't on the test and forgetting details that were.

Taken with GEOG101L (the lab), I felt I got a very comprehensive understanding of the basics of geography as the lab could cover some concepts more in detail than Dr. Szuster could alone in lecture. It helped enormously when it came to midterms.

The time hat the class was at was inconvenient for me.
No aspect was unenjoyable. I wish the animations used in lectures were available for study outside of the lectures.
Sometime there was a confusing question on the exams that wasn't fully covered in lecture. But my overall scores were pretty high, so I can't really complain.
The power-points weren't too great in explanation should try to make it a little more clear. The power-points were too colorful, a bit distracting.
Lots of information to remember, though it is a science course, so that was to be expected.

The class grade is based only on midterms, and I wish there could be more points to earn other than just on the midterm exams.

Cramming for exams is never fun, and it's quite challenging to remember a lot of terms and concepts. Some of the exam questions were worded and/or paraphrased in a way that clashed with my memorization of the PowerPoint slides.
The tests were pretty hard.
I think the grading system is okay, but I don't really like how I can't know my exact standing throughout the course. I only know the "gist" of it. Instead of doing an overall curve, is it possible to have each exam have it's own curve? I don't know. It would just be nice to have definite standings throughout the course.
I wish there was extra credit available.
The animations were unavailable to practice and use.

The text book is good. I wish it were hard bound as it is one I will likely keep for reference. I am sure many students prefer the savings. Perhaps the book store could offer both? I wish I had looked online for a hardcover copy.
Dr. Szuster is a great and outgoing professor who is always willing to help students out. He seems to really understand his topic and tries to explain it in an enthusiastic manner even though sometimes the topics are long and tedious. Overall, Dr. Szuster is a great guy and is clear on what is expected from his students especially on the exams.
Overall, it was a decent class. I'm feeling more passionate about geography than I expected to be. To future students, choose Brian over the other faculty for 101.

Presentation on destination is fun way to know the classmates and different places. lecture power point are very clear and easy to use for study for exams.
The course integrated components of the environment and socio-economic issues. The subject matter linked together problems and offered solutions. The course textbook was only a supplement as Professor Szuster provided slides and extra readings as the majority of our education. The last assignment, trying to get us to think critically and apply what we learn was a great end to the semester.
Love how incorporates photos from different countries and cultures that I may never experience. Also appreciate your understanding that we have lives outside of UH and not making attendance mandatory.

I liked Professor Szuster's enthusiasm for the course and the large use of examples.
I liked the videos a lot because it helped me understand the concepts and it was engaging.
He has a very Good teaching style. He is good at knowing where students are confused and he uses that to explain some topics with more detail. So it's as though we have questions but he answers them in his lecture. If there are any questions he is really good about explaining the answer.

I think certain parts of geography are quite interesting. I liked when Professor Szuster discussed concepts as they related to Hawaii in particular; I'm glad I learned more about possible problems we may face with earthquakes and hurricanes, for example. I liked everything about the course. Professor Szuster was very enthusiastic about the material and always explained difficult to understand concepts in a simpler way so I could better understand it.
I liked that he did such good review sessions, those are what made me understand the best.
Brian Szuster was an effective, engaging teacher with passion for the material. Complex subjects were explained thoroughly and I came out of the class with a solid knowledge and foundation of material I did not go in with.
The videos were very engaging. The Professor was energetic and friendly (always a smile on his face). I appreciated not being rushed during exams and having the time to think each question over.

I enjoyed going to Professor Szuster's lectures. Some days he would show us very interesting videos. My favorite ones were the tsunami and volcano ones. These videos were great in that they gave me a much better understanding of the material we just learned.

21. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I did not like the test because the first two exams seemed to be a little bit too hard in my perspective. Although, it is a little better that he curves the scores.
It was a fun class to go to everyday. He loves what he does and he makes that very apparent. So there wasn't any specific thing that I didn't like about this course.

Attending classes is almost pointless because Szuster moves through his powerpoints too quickly during class for me to keep up and the powerpoints can be viewed online anyway.
Reading
Although I do appreciate Professor's efforts to make things easier on us--by grading tests on a curve--I think that they made the course a little too easy. I think he can continue to curve grades, but he might consider doing it a little differently; I think he should generate the curves in the more traditional way. I don't want to necessarily spoil it for later Geography 101 students, but I sometimes don't appreciate that a person who actually got a much lower numeric score than I did is able to get the same A grade that I did. I don't think it's fair for students who would do well without the curve. Again, I do appreciate that there is a curve, though--it provides a good safety net.

Overall, the class was decent. It was a good course to learn the overview of the world and natural occurrences.
Professor Szuster is likeable and good-humored. He is good at narrowing the focus of the topics, as well--the textbook was very detailed, and the chapters were a little long. I also appreciate that right before we had a test, he would tell us exactly what concepts we should know. This practice was very helpful, and I think it helped reduce the strain on the students.

The powerpoint lectures given by Szuster are the best part of the course. The EIA group project was a good intermediary break. The powerpoints had good visuals that kept the student's interest.

The superferry paper. I wish that it could have been on any project of our choice. I felt tempted to summarize and discuss the policy and judiciary side of environmental assessment than the process of EIA's. I would prefer an assignment that lets us try to do a mini EIS instead.

Good overall course. I like the way the class was run with everything for the semester known from the start.
I liked the group project and presentation because it allows students to see examples of what this course was all about. It helped me understand what an EIS is and what it contain, and seeing other group's EIS showed what really worked and what did not work in the EIS process.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
This is really new to me. Through the class, I understand the basic knowledge of EIA in the U.S. and in the world. I will develop my skills on the field of EIA as the important role of it to sustainable development.

Group presentations,instructor presentations, guest speakers, length, time, location, video...great course.
The organization and clarity of each topic. I left the class understanding each step of the EIA process; or at least the purpose and definitions behind it.
I liked learning about the different EIS that the class groups presented.

The presentation assignment was a good opportunity to examine and analyze actual examples of assessments even though not all of the presentations were fully informative.
The case studies/presentations.
Comprehensive coverage of the course topic with sufficient detail for an overview course. Dr. Szuster is among the best instructors I've had at UH (and overall); compared with others I've had at UH he was very effective and fair in his teaching and assessment. I would rather have an instructor like him, who will grade critically, and risk not getting an A then the average UH prof (who gives everyone an A because they cannot teach). It was very interesting to get the one day, half-a-class, overview of his PhD research, tied into the course material.
Use of slides for teaching was effective and interesting.
I liked the case study about the Superferry the best.
I liked that the course was well organized and the goals and objectives were clearly stated. Also having the due date for the final paper be in late november was helpful. The precis were useful because they allowed us to organize our thoughts in a concise manner. Also having the presentations on laulima helped because it is often overwhelming to try and take notes in class and having the ability to double check online was great.
I enjoyed the student case studies as they provided insight into the variety of issues that can arise in the environmental assessment process. I also liked the practical exercises that we went through in class. Brian was able to relate his own professional experience to the aspects of EIS that we were studying.
I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the class. I felt that there was enough assignments to supplement and better understand the lectures but not too much such that we would be drowned in work.
I liked the assignment where we studied a past EIA case study. This allowed for a critical understanding of the process and production of an EIA.
Teacher's enthusiasm encouraged my interest in the subject; I really liked his theory on preparing for the final exam (precis assignments)
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
PRESENTATION
There lacked applicability to the every day scene. The group presentations helped incorporate EIA today; however, perhaps a class lecture that focused on more EIA's and how a specific project would undergo an EIA would have helped to better understand the steps. Although this was just an intro level class.
The precis articles were hard to understand sometimes because they were repetitive (within one article)
Not much interaction between students
The text was not great.
I did not appreciate the way a few students constantly talked while Professor Szuster was talking.
I would have liked to hear more about EIAs on which Dr. Szuster has worked or knows about. It was great to have so many student presentations on so many EIAs, but more case studies from the prof. would have been good too.
Nothing.
I disliked the reading. Many of the articles rambled and did not have good focus.
Sometimes the lectures were a bit long and drawn out. There was a lot of content to cover, and a high number of students in the class so discussion was left to a relative minimum.
I wish this course could have been more discussion oriented rather than lecture style.
With such a large class it was hard to create a discussion environment. This would hel palot i think.
Size of class made it hard for us to get a "hands on" experience

The mix of students from different places and disciplines was enjoyable.
I am excited for future students to participate in the 700 level EIA course that Dr. Szuster is planning.
Well worth my time, money, and effort.
The course is quite useful and i like to take advance course if it will be available as discussed in the last class.
In class we discussed having a class that would be part II to this class that would allow us to have more hands on experience with EIAs. I think that this is a great idea and something that i would definitely sign up for.
I really enjoyed this class, and hope that the Geography department strongly considers developing some sort of EIS practicum.
It was a really good coure that teeaches the basics of the EIA practice. Very useful in my future development as an Architect.
