I would recomemded for students. He is a good teacher with a sense of humor...:)
Class was good for the most part. I felt that there was less of an emphasis on the textbook content for the later chapters, as we focused a lot on DFDs and flowcharts. This class did help me better understand the processes businesses undergo and some of the problems that these processes may have.
Others might complain that he is "harder" than the other professors that teach the same course, but I think that you will definitely "learn" more from him than from any others. At the end of the semester, you will be happy with all the knowledge you've gained from Professor Debreceny and also be proud of yourself for completing all those assignments!
I felt that the course was very important and contains great information. I did not like the answers to certain questions conflicted to other answers that were given. I felt it was difficult to understand and grasp the information through lectures. I felt that there were some things that needed greater explanation and understanding but there was not much explanation. I did like that he posted most of the homework and information needed online, but i did not like the fact that when homework questions change we were not notified and did the wrong homework assignment. I also did not like how the lectures were really short, I felt like because there was a limited understanding in some of the information that more explanation and maybe a longer lecture would have helped. Overall I felt he was very help and easy to talk to, but the organization of the class and the way the explanation of the information that is presented.
The project is a lot to do in a very little amount of time. The exam had too many questions on it with too little time, also the grading was a little off, just because I didn't put the title to one of the DFD's I got minus 3 points, but the question it corresponded to only asked for that DFD.
I found that this course was challenging and required many project deadlines. However, I gained a lot from the professor's knowledge of this subject.
good teacher! learned a lot. rigorous, but i enjoyed it.
There needs to be more assignments and homework for this class. I wish I had more practices on the control matrix and the flowcharts. I was able to fully understand the DFD's because we had so much practice and homework.
Professor Debreceny is an overall good teacher. However, his interactions with students are very intimidating and conditioned me to participate less and less in class as the semester progressed. Teachers should encourage students to ask questions and make mistakes, not shoot down every student with a wrong answer and make them feel like an idiot. Also, his syllabus does not show points or weight for any assignments/exams/attendance so I was not able to keep track of my grade as I do for my other classes.
Shouldn't put students down when trying to answering the questions. You make it intimidating for students to answer your questions thats why no one really wants to say anything. It would be helpful to more of the anonymous answering or workout problems you do online in class on that website so we can all contribute.
He brings smile to class and teach me good atmoshere!! and nice teaching stye with using video as well. Individually, he gave me opportunity to teach class exercise problem which was helpful foe me. Even though I am an international student, he cleary gave me instruction and friendly for me. It was very thanksful.
Class practices were very helpful.
Instructor is nice.
The class size was too large for the professor to get to everyone to effectively help everyone out. A lot of times we'd have to rush through the slides because time would be running out in the class. It also would've helped to relate a lot of the material to everyday life so that we all would have a much clearer and better understanding of the material.
I feel as though I didnâ??t learn anything in respects to any accounting information systems. I thought this class was based on the different types of accounting systems that are used in the work place today, such as Excel, Peach Tree, or Great Planes. Our in class daily work assignments were done as individual and not on the board, I feel as though many people got left behind and or didnâ??t understand the assignments because it was never discussed or even over as a class. I feel that we wasted a lot of valuable time by doing work on our own in which we didnâ??t understand how to do it or even comprehend what we are doing to only do it again night after night. The grading to me is also a little odd, for the most part on projects the class average is between A and B but our midterm were in the C range. We again waste time by with our in class daily work assignments and we donâ??t get to our lecture or the Power Point presentations. They class by far has been my worse class at Shidler.
Exams were very hard although study terms were clearly defined in advance. I liked that he had brought in guest speakers who were relevant to the class and were interesting to listen to. The group assignment was difficult because there were too many steps, each step being long and detailed in itself.
This class has given me more anxiety than my five other classes combined. The correlation between the lecture slides, the textbook and the homework assigned is little to none and the process of reviewing the homework in class is time consuming and anxiety inducing. The in-class exercises are frustrating and a waste of class time. While everyone is working on it individually getting lost and confused, assistance from the professor is monopolized for a good chunk of time by just one person. I would work on the exercise and get stumped and asking my neighbors for help led me to nowhere as they were just as lost as I was. If everyone needs assistance it makes more sense to do the exercises as a class together and those that want to do it on their own can still do it on their own. Professor Debreceny is however extremely knowledgeable about the topic and is available for what seems like 24/7 to help and provide feedback. I'm not sure what to take from this class, but at least I know that I should be able to at the bare minimum be able to understand how to read a DFD and flowchart when I see one.
The project and exam is too hard.... but I know he is not gonna change the material, so why bother?
Knowledgeable teacher who likes what he does! Willing to help! The project is A LOT of work, especially for the team leaders. I would suggest not having an assignment due on the Sunday before finals because students are not going to be concentrated on it. It's a little too much work in that time frame to have it right after the project. I would suggest doing it earlier in the semester!
Debreceny interacted well with students and did a very good job of explaining the material. The guest speakers were also very good.

Maybe include pair group work, for all the papers we had to write it would have been nice to have another person to bounce ideas off of. Otherwise, I loved that he did study guides this semester. I feel like it helped a lot. Optional draft reviews of papers were also very helpful to get a better grade on the final version.
Very knowledgeable professor who likes to challenge students' critical thinking and makes them work.
Sarcasm is great. Enthusiasm is great. The standards you set are really high, but help push is to do our best.
Needs to give managable and understandable work, shorter reading and researching assignments, paper should be split into two assignments than one and more bathroom breaks. On the other hand, real life experience is told about auditing and his sarcasm, his care for students is a plus. Extentions on homework is given to make up for difficult assignments. If possible, have classes split into 2 per week like on T-TR than just one night.
The class discussions really helped to clarify the material, especially for the homework. Homework might get more participation if there was credit for it. It was hard to learn through the lectures, because it was a lot of material that was covered quickly. It didn't seem to help much with the homework though. But the material was hard in itself. Sometimes it was unclear what the correct answers were for the homework. The cases were okay, but wasn't always sure what the desired responses were. The draft revisions and skeleton really helped. The midterm was reasonably formatted and the cheat sheet was extremely useful (there's a lot to know). I felt the ACL test was hard since there was a lot to remember on how to properly input. Overall, I felt the course material itself was hard but that the professor knew what he was doing and was organized.
The textbook was very difficult to understand. Answers to textbook questions could not be found in the book. Debreceny's posed articles on Laulima were more helpful.
I can genuinely say that I've enjoyed having you as a professor for my last two semesters of my college career.
Very ambiguous class. Roger tries to teach high level concepts, but the way he teaches makes grading feel very arbitrary.
Fun personality. Love the sarcasm and quick, witty remarks. Makes a long class amusing but still serious and challenging. Nice teacher and helpful, but still has high expectations from students. Probably shouldn't let lazy students sweet talk him into retaking exams though - not fair to us and lowers the overall quality of accounting education.
This class was an enjoyably experience. I learned so much from this teacher. By far, Prof. D is one of the best teachers I ever had in UHM. For the last past year, I looked forward to going to class, because I knew that I would learn and have a good time.
There is a lot of work for his courses, but I actually feel as if I learn the material well. I truly realized I was going into the right profession after taking his classes.
Subjective grading style, makes it hard for students to produce "A" quality work in the eyes of the Professor. Case Studies were often left to us to interpret meaning and specific requirements.
I had a side job and was attending school fulltime. I did not have time to fulfill class assignments. There was just too much work to allocate my time to this class. It would have been better if material that was more important was issued as homework instead of every detail.
The level of difficulty for this class was set too high. I did not get a chance to bring my overall grade up because there was no opportunity to do so. The cases were difficult. I submitted a draft and never got a response from you. I did not say anything because it was already too late for me to redo my work. Whenever students submitted drafts, your response would be "you did it wrong". You should have put suggestions on how to improve our answers instead of telling us we did it wrong! There was no point in submitting drafts because I knew that was the response I was going to get. For me, my overall feel of the class was very tense. I was afraid of being picked on, so I always looked away. I'm sorry, but I did not like this class :(
Uneasy class
Would have enjoyed more pop quiz like in the ACC 409 class.
Dr. Debreceny is probably one of the most underrated professors in the school of Accountancy. His methods are somewhat unconventional when compared to the typical lecture/memorization/MC exam format. However, he is extremely effective, and I feel like I learned a lot. His readings and exercises all add value and push you to use your brain and actually think about the auditing process. Definitely better than some of the pointless BS that they make you do in other classes. What we learn is very practical. The class has a lot of work, but all of it is worthwhile. I would definitely recommend that anyone serious about being an auditor take the 409 and 418 sequence with him.
Some of the written project should be done by group because it would help students to get better ideas in answering these cases.

Cobit
All of the data flow diagrams and flowcharts we did.
Dr. Debreceny's New Zealander accent.
the similarity of what I learned in class and what I'm doing while working.
all the context DFD's I did in this class.
The word COBIT.
I probably won't remember the course
Segregation of duty is important
doing system data flow diagrams and flowcharts. Being able to look at diagrams and flowcharts and figure out controls in place as well as missing controls.
Data flow diagrams and flowcharts! We practiced this so many times and while I hated them in the beginning I don't think I will ever forget how to do them.
I feel that this course is one of the best courses that I have took so far at UH.
practicing and ensuring governance controls with the aid of diagrams and charts.
So hard, scared of professor. It was hard to understand the material and harder to ask question.
the environment was not very conducive to learning. Too many distractions created by other students in the class.
I don't know what he saying
Professor's funny remarks, IT controls, and Visio software use.
Controls
The complex nature of information systems.
learning the flow diagram and physical data flow diagram, logical data flow diagram...so many things.
the homework, reading, projects, and late night jokes.
how much I hate DFD's and control matrixes
Hopefully by the audits and other things I will be doing that utilize the course material.
being one of the hardest classes to sit through, especially due to it being at night time.
flow charts
Doing DFDs
How much he motivated us to do work and study the material he gave us
Probably how terrible my partner for the first project was. There was no excuse for his incompetence since he was a local who should have known how to run spell and grammar check.
Spending 1000 hours of my life on the major systems project.
the amount of homework that was issued during the second half of the semester... lol
His infamous "One Song" and his straight forward and blunt personality. Oh, and the other countless items of interest: Cobit, COSO, DFDs, Flowcharts, etc.
The large amount of projects :(
The many group projects and professor's expansive knowledge of Accounting Information Systems. Also the various professionals in the field that we able to meet during the semester
Accounting control in a business.....
the professor's enthusiasm and then for DFD's and flowcharts.
DFD's and Flow chart
In this class, there are a lot of discussion material, not even have the right or wrong answers. This class is hard for ESL students.
The DFD charts that caused me some stress that I hopefully still remember how to create.
The number of group projects. The wit of the professor. The constant struggle to be prepared for class.
Mr. Debreceny was knowledgable but I didn't learn anything from him at all.
How scared I was on the first day of class... He is intimidating but actually really nice.
COBIT and Data flow diagrams
the professors sense of humor
All those data-flow diagrams that we had to do!
All of the DFDs that we did!

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Questions asked by students needs to have a definitive answer from the professor.
None.
Use more common language and speak as if we are clueless on the material, because we really come into the class knowing little about this material. Sometimes you talk over our heads and needs to simplify things on our level.
Although what was used for the main project was only taught in the second half of the course, it would have really helped if more information about the project was given earlier in the semester. With the amount of time given with our client, things felt rushed and forced.
N/A
None.
I didn't understand why we were learning most of the topics. It would have been better to just go more in depth with fewer topics. For example, I did not know the application of DFD's and how we were supposed to use them, we just learned how to create them. Therefore I did not understand the purpose or the application of what I learned and ended up feeling like I did not learn something applicable in the field of accounting.
May be less homework
speak clearly and put documents in laulima where it's suppose to be and where everybody es expecting it to be.
Teaching the material before having to do the homework. Most times I felt like I had no idea how to do the homework because it wasn't explained beforehand.
I feel that there are some things he can do to improve the class: 1. stop people from talking to each other during the lecture. it is very distracting. 2. explain the objectives of the homework assignments/projects. 3. more in class exercise.
Have more real life examples and integrate COBIT more with diagrams and charts. The SDLC could be the theme of the class while making use of diagrams and charts.
Be more nice and helpful to students. Please don't tell students that you are mean person from the first day of semester. Please do not make students embarrased when students give you the wrong answer. This makes others scared of speaking up.
I know the course information is valuable but at the end of the semester, I could not honestly say I learned/understood enough of the information. Primarily, Roger needs to control the class and the students better. I believe improving the explanation of the material and better control of the class/students by not allowing a handful of students overrun the class would be helpful.
A number of Projects improve me
Clearer and simplier instructions on projects and homework. Remove textbook requirement for the course since it is useless. Encourage students to earn extra marks for the course if they join Accounting Club or Beta Alpha Psi Reduce needless reading assignments to important readings that will be on exam
Make the goals of the course clearer. The topics covered are incredibly varied and its diffiult to grasp all of them in one semester.
The concepts of Accounting Information Systems are very abstract. Making them more concrete would help improve the course greatly.
This class should be twice a week and not once a week.
Some of the deadlines were pushed close together. The project load seemed harsh at first but a little difficult to sift through. The mid-semester test was a little tough.
His teaching method is fine
I think that this particular material can be very dry. Roger did his best to engage us in the subject matter and in my opinion did a good job.
By teaching. Its so hard to learn in this class. We jump around from subject to subject, never completing a full thought or look at any one subject. Take too long going over homework, without actually getting out of the article or exercise what he wants us to get out of it.
I would rather have more assignments and no midterm or vice versa.
The homework requirements were unclear sometimes. We found ourselves reading what we needed to do but not really understanding how to do it. It was very helpful reviewing the homework in class though.
More group activities and first hand experience with worksheets and questions he provides us
More powerpoints and formal instruction
Issuing more virtual cards
Give more examples about material in the textbook. Actually go over some material from the week's chapter. Have more practice materials available to students before exams.
lectures were honestly boring, u can probably make it more interesting. u could reduce the amount of homework that is due each week and towards the end of the semester :)
I find how the course is organized currently to be alright. If anything, because there are no study guides for tests, emphasize important topics you feel are important and keep posting past exams.
Less projects and clearer instructions and communication techniques. Laulima was extremely confusing and there were so many different documents I got confused so much! Some documents contradicted others. For example, one document said a project was due on a certain date and another document said that the project was due on a different date. Extremely confusing and it made everything seem very unorganized.
Allow time in class to work on group project. Be sure to review specific portions covered by the group project earlier so students can apply learned knowledge into project. ex. Control Matrices
He provided many assignment to think the course by myself.
Professor Debreceny teaches the course very well. I look forward to taking future courses from him.
Explain the lesson more.
giving study guide for the exam because there are a lot of discussion question, students do not have the written answer is hard to prepare for th exam.
More examples and explanations of the diagrams, flowcharts, etc. Those were difficult and I think they could have had a little more information on them.
Ease off on the final project just a bit.
He needs to explain about contents of this class clearly. He should stop using technical words without explaining about them in the class. I really didn't understand what he was talking about when he was using those words. His powerpoint slides were not useful at all and it should be improved.
In class, be more clear as to what the answers are for the homework problems and an explanation. Often times we go off on a tangent. Be a bit more specific in directions for homework and especially projects.
I liked how we did certain assignments over and over, but it seemed like we only did this in the end of the semester. Maybe applying this method in the beginning would help too?
I would say that Roger has already found his niche or forte in teaching this course. It's very scary getting put on the spot but if you don't call on us then nobody's going to talk or the same people will be the ones to speak. How Roger teach's now is pretty much the best way to teach this course, even if I don't like being called on.
More practice with DFDs. I feel like I'm still not sure what I'm doing
21. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Be a little more specific on what's required for us to know for the exam and maybe spend some time having a quick review session.
The homework requirements and documents seem scattered throughout Laulima and it can be difficult to find what exactly is due. It could be organized better.
It would have helped more on the DFDs, flowcharts, and control matrix if Roger had walked us through it the first time or so rather than having us try to piece things together then have him show us. Too much time was spent that way.
Giving more time to complete some of the assignments. Especially the Accounting Information System Project. I felt that this project was rushed with all of the other assignments going on.
None.
Learn more about the use and application of actual accounting information systems, how to use them, and go more in depth about their applications instead of learning a wider variety of topics.
It may be helpful if he does his lecture before the homework, because towards the end of class, I am exhausted and it is hard to pay attention to his lecture.
teaching style and method works fine with me.I like it when we work on in class assignments and he tell us right there in class what we need to do and what mistakes we need to improve on.
Same as above.
NO. very good as is.
Have more in class group assignments that also include you and an interactor. The interview activity was fun and I think it would be fun to act out DFD's. I think that would also help to understand how data is transfered between entities.
The way materials are posted on laulima is hard to find.
Maintain student interest. Too many (70-80%) of the students are not paying attention. Do not allow computers to be used unless needed for class work. For Q&A, you must call/pick students by name to keep then engaged. Too many students are disengaged which led to one or two students monopolizing the class which led even more to other students disengaging. I believe maintaining control of the class is crucial. Course started on the right track but became worse 1/3 of the way through. Also, there are instances where explanations could have been better through use of more current events or just explaining it from a different perspective.
-Add funny stuffs to powerpoint like the AGIF presentation -reduce homework assignments when assigning projects -Should teach using accounting software like quickbooks or peachtree -Teach a little bit of database -Relate this to accounting 323 or otherwise why should accounting 323 be a prereq to take acc 409 or be taken concurrently.
The subject matter seems very broad and is difficult to gain expertise through purely theoretical situations. THe projects helped a lot with this, but were sometimes still difficult to grasp.
Start off with easier examples for DFD's and control matrices and it's okay to be released from class 10 minutes early every now and then.
None
Keep the accent and humor, and students will enjoy the otherwise dry material.
Doing the homework disucssion it's not really clear what thr right answers are for some of it.
Very disorganized as far as laulima and the assignments. Hard to keep track of what reading is for which week and what or if any assignments are due. Basically just hard to stay focused and interested in any 2 hr and 45 minute long class.
I think the material is taught well with high expectations and motivation, the course just needs different methods to teaching certain topics
Provide solutions immediately for homework Assign less homework
Good teaching style learned a lot through hands on
Too much reading and homework assigned. True, it stimulates thinking, but sometimes he seems to ignore the fact that we have other classes to tackle, not just ACC 409. Should go over some more examples (preview) of the material for the following week's class that pertain to the homework assigned. Sometimes I seemed lost as to how to handle the homework assignments. It would work to explain the control matrix better. Also, the major systems project should be assigned WAAAAAY earlier in the semester. That way, groups have more time to find a good client and have enough time in the end to submit their report to the client for the client's response. The turnaround time for this project is way too short between client response and final submission (barely a few days apart).
the overall feeling of the class was intense at first, but it felt more relaxed during the second half. i liked this method because during the first half of the semester i was forced to do the homework and read the readings so i wouldn't get picked on. this relaxed feeling was really unexpected and i thought it was going to be intense the whole way.
Stimulate more in class discussions. I personally hate those, but it helps those students who dont understand the topics at hand understand whats going on in class. It's easier for a student to learn the material from other students who do.
Clearer instructions of what is being asked for projects, homework, etc. Most times people didn't answer questions in class because they did not understand the question that was being asked, not because they just did not want to participate. Also, there were too many group projects. It is extremely difficult because students have different schedules. Yes, we understand that in the real world we will need to work as part of the team, however, in the real world at your job, you have a set work schedule so you have time to work on projects. In school, this is unrealistic because everyone has completely different schedules.
Posting course material week by week is kind of confused. Every time when i check homework or other materials, i have to open different week to look for it.
none.
The amount of group projects were very challenging. College students have very tight schedules and it's difficult to find time to meet. If there was one less project or extra time given in-class to work on the project, I would have had more time to focus on the quality of my work and depth of my knowledge on the subject.
More lectures
seperate into two classes for each week. Two hours and 45 minus is too long.
No suggestions for teaching styles or methods.
At first the teaching style took a bit getting used to. After a while, you realize that it forces you to be prepared for class.
1. Make helpful and well-organized slides 2. Ask students whether they have questions or not 3. Don't use technical words without explaining about them 4. Give students exact answers of homeworks 5. Don't use previous semester's powerpoint slides (grade's part was completely different) 6. Make a syllabus
I like the discussions in class, but it can sometimes be confusing. Sarcasm can often be taken as seriousness when explaining certain aspects of the course especially late at night.
the slides had A LOT of information on them... maybe too much? it could be just me...
Start and/or explain the final project more in advance so that groups have more time to prepare. I think for some groups it came so quickly that it was difficult to prepare the first part.
I thought that the book was a waste of money.

The contents in the book are boring. I really liked the random placement of groups. It gave me an opportunity to work with different people, versus if I were to choose my own, I would be stuck with the same people throughout the semester.
He was very nice person and he showed his knowledge on this field. One thing about this class was that there were too much homework every week.
Deprecency is a really good teacher, but sometimes i feel like i really don't know what is going on in class. Maybe it's because of his accent, or me not really being used to a class that depends so much on laulima for announcements.
By far the best class that i took.
Overall great approach to class. Very detailed work on COBIT, but needs to be first explained in more simpler ways...small assignment perhaps? I enjoyed your class and look forward to having you again next semester. Overall: A =)
The information the course offers is extremely important and valuable. Unfortunately, the learning environment hindered learning and degraded the experience. Dr. Debreceny's knowledge of the material is excellent, but his methods of teaching are not effective. I was initially excited to take the course and learn but found it difficult to learn and after several weeks of trying even found it hard to stay engaged.
More bathrooom breaks Dismiss class early whenever possible Open book and notes for exams since they are already hard Longer time for exams if they are going to be long Make class schedule during the afternoon rather than night time. ACC 409 can be used for MIS majors as technical elective requirement if accounting major is switched to MIS instead?
I think the class hour is too long. Students are getting tire and don't even pay attention. However, Professor Debreceny is a great professor.
Control Matrices are still unclear to me. We should go through an entire one, including the solution, step by step in class just as we did with the DFDs
Some of the roleplaying seemed like a waste of time. But overall, the class was enjoyable.
I like that Dr. Debreceny is pretty helpful and responds immediately when I ask him a question through e-mail. He is more accessible than other professors because he has many ways to contact him. Dr. Debreceny makes ACC 409 an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT course to take. Not for the weak. Might be helpful to cut down on the number of projects.
i think you're a fair grader when it comes to our work, except for the midterm.
IMO i though this class was going to be horrible, nice to be proven wrong.
Exam was hard. I know this is the advanced level acc class, but the question in the exams are confused non-native english students. I didn't even have enough time to copy in the midterm exam.

I liked the way the Rogue Trader video tied in with all material learned in the course. It was nice way to relate a real experience to the concepts being learned.
Over all the class is okay and i learned a lot.
The teacher is nice.

I really didn't learn anything from him and this course at all. Class was not well-organized and I didn't understand what he wanted to teach us and what this course was for. He was a knowledgable person but he doesn't have teacher material. I am disappointed at taking this course from him.
Interesting class, very helpful that Professor Debreceny is available for help on multiple online programs aside from e-mail.
They book hardly help...
Course material may have been boring, but the class itself taught me a thing or two about myself, which I am always grateful for.

Awesome class, fun as always. Best professor at UH
Easily one of the most enthusiastic and enjoyable professors I have ever encountered.
Roger is one of the best professors that I have had. He makes class fun and I learned a lot from his teachings.
overall great instructor
Most teachers at this University have a tendency to suck, but not Roger. He seems kind of weird because he pulls his pants up to the midpoint between his belly button and nipples, rather than getting them hemmed to the right length for his short little legs. But besides the pants and whole New Zealand thing, he is a good teacher that actually forces us to think through problems, rather than just lecturing over a PowerPoint like so many other teachers.
Thank you so much Professor Debreceny.
tons of reading, makes me want to cry. but roger is by far one hell of a great professor. he makes class fun and enjoyable. i dread some of my 1 hr classes but i do look forward to coming to this 2 hr 45min class. hes smart, kind, and funny. i recommend him to all my fellow students who has the chance to have him as a professor.
