13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

He knows the subject matter very well and explains things very clearly. I liked the format of the class and being able to go back and listen to recordings of the lecture when necessary. That helped a lot. proof, explaining He knew the material very well. He definitely knows the course material well. knowledgeable precise He really knew the subject well and was available for help during his office hours. He knew subject material. He knows the subject area very well and could explain a concept in different ways in order for us to understand. He's a very nice guy. If you ask him for help, he's very polite and helpful. Great at breaking it down for us to easily to understand the materials. Knew subject well Knew his stuff He knows the subject. plenty of example problems His knowledge of the material The online class was nice. He really knew the subject well. Very knowledgeable on engineering topics He knows his topic Knows the subject Good at explaining the material. He knew the material really well. Aaron knows his material very well. He can easily answer questions students ask, and he can explain everything clearly and in an understandable way. Hanai is very knowledgeable about his subject of Applied Mechanics. He is very organized and operates in a well timed manner. Even though the class was instructed online, he made the tools useful for students to ask and answer quastions. He is very straight forward on his tests and goes over the information in the class that will be on the tests He knew the subject well.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

The exams were unreasonably long. The questions were fair but the grading was harsh, especially without a curve. There was not enough to do a complete job and have time to go back and check for any mistakes, especially with the vast number of calculations. There was barely time enough to finish exams, much less to check work. don't rush on the very last chapters A review day is helpful to clear up some areas that we didn't understand in the previous classes. Also a longer time for the tests or fewer problems. I would highly recommend reimplementing homework into this course. Although a significant amount of the material covered comes from physics 170, I felt that homework would have really helped to better understand the material and provide more discussion for online classroom lectures. Online is not a good way to learn this material be at your office during office hours I would recommend having students to sign in and be in class rather than making it an option to be in class or not. But then again he saves the recordings which is good. give homework for partial grade instead of 4 test determine whole class grade. There was one midterm taken that could have used a review day to ask questions..., but other than that, the class is great! Include more office hours for students to get help? There are too many problems on exams! Two hours is not enough. Either shorten the exams or lengthen the time allotted for exams. Assigned homework would be more helpful than just suggesting problems. Whatever happened to Mastering Engineering assignments? That would have been beneficial, in my opinion. Be stricter on people who go overtime more quizzes and higher weight for quiz scores More class participation. Make the class not based solely on exams. Homeworks, extra credit, etc... Have practice exams to give out w/ solutions. Study Guide. When he does online problems, if he could finish the problems completely through. When reviewing the classes online, its very easy to get confused. Be more detailed in explaining lessons. A bit hard to relate and understand how to solve for multiple unknowns sometimes. Finish at least the first 2-3 examples used in detail (varied in degree of difficulty, i.e. easy, medium, hard) when shown in lecture. Not all students can follow train of thought especially when done mentally without writing out steps and view them as easy once its partially set up. It is important to learn by doing, but having some incomplete examples to look back on makes it harder to do so. Less problems on exam, not enough time Less Problems on Exams The tests had too many questions for the alloted time. It is too stressful for students, especially when they have to take it at the testing center and keep track of their own time. more time on exams shorter tests take extra time too explain some topics The class is based off of calculations. I would suggest showing more examples than proofs so that students know how to do the calculations well. I would suggest some homework to be assigned so students are forced to practice the problems and concepts being taught. To give less problems on the tests. Less problem on the exam or more time to finish the exam

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

not really He was consistent in the office hours that he had open to students. I was also willing to help students through textbook problems. Really helpful during his office hours. He made sure we understood concepts before moving on to another and made himself available to his students through office hours. When we had tons of questions, he would stop his lecturing and explain to us in detail of what we didn't understand? I didn't notice. He listens to what we have to say and gives his best answer. helped solve hw problems online Reviews before exams. A quiz at the beginning of the semester to acquaint us with the testing center. He had office hours Would sometimes ask if students had questions as he was going through lesson. Otherwise we type in our questions and he answers after. asking questions gave extra credit and answered any and all questions students asked. He just told us to do homework. When Aaron mentioned an extra credit opportunity, he showed that he had concern for us to do well in the class. Didn't. N/A He answered question the students had

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, because you can definitely learn a lot from him because he knows the material and presents it clearly. yes, learning a lot. Yes. This is better than taking it at Manoa with a lot more people. I would probably not recommend Aaron Hanai to students. I would only suggest him to another student if they did extremely well in physics 170 and have a strong background in calculus. I personally felt that he rushed through a lot of the math and physics as it was a "review of physics 170 material." Therefore, if a student has a strong background in these two areas they would probably do really well in this course. He is a tough grader with little partial credit on exams that, when done meticulously would take far more than the allotted time. There is little opportunity to make up for lost points. I would not recommend this class to a full-time student Sure! Yes. This subject is the "foot in the door" to a very tedious and difficult career path. Prof. Hanai makes learning interesting. Yes, because he grades fairly and the work load isn't overwhelming. Of course, great professor. Nice guy and easy to approach if you need help My only comment on this is that you must work very hard. The class is not easy to pass, let alone get a good grade. yes, hes great yes, the online class works around alot of busy schedules Yes, he is fair on the exams, does not try to trick you. Unfortunately no. Unless they grasp physics very well, and have A LOT of time to dedicate to the class. The exams although used many problems from the assigned homework, many of them were the hardest ones to grasp, and not enough problems that tested the student on basics-intermediate. I would recommend him if the class included mandatory homework into our grades as well since "suggested" homework makes students lazier to do it. Also if the class was an in-classroom lecture. Teaching engineering online makes it harder to ask questions as we can only type them and sometimes it sounds like the professor isn't sure of his own explanations. If we were in a physical classroom, it'd be easier to ask questions as well ignore any tone variation in voice since we could look at body language for confirmation on a topic. No. Although he knows the material well, the online system is ineffective and he does not grade fairly. yes, because he is a good professor Yes, but he is very detailed. Yes but I will tell student that this class is hard I would recommend Aaron to other students if they can work hard and study frequently outside of class hours. I would reccomend Hanai to other students if his classes were taught in a classroom setting. Even though Hanai was fairly understanding in an online setting, the course of Applied Mechanics must be taught in class in order for a student to fully comprehend the course material. I would recommend Aaron as a teacher, because the way he presents his information is straight forward and understandable. Yes and No, he's a good teacher and knows the subject well but the exams were a little bit challenging because of the amount of problems and time constraint.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

Good lecturer, but exams were too long. It felt like taking a final every time and without a curve it was worse. hehe He is extremely intelligent in physics and civil engineering. I personally think that he should teach higher level courses as his background and teaching style would be a better match to those students. good attitude overall TAKE HIS CLASS GREAT PROFESSOR¡ I strongly felt that he wasn't really fond of our class because our level of knowledge wasn't up to par with his past classes. He expects you to really know the subject well, especially if the material he's covering is a review of previous material learned. he is a good teacher As a person, a nice guy. Very knowledgeable and brilliant in engineering and its courses, however its sometimes hard to understand topics because Professor Hanai is so brilliant. He says lots of the work in the examples used are easy so may skip some steps, but it might not always come as quick and simple to students learning, especially since most is relatively new material or hasn't been seen/applied in a while. Regardless, Hanai seems like a very kind professor! He seems to favor students that have KCC as their home campus. Nice guy, please put a curve on your grading Great teacher; seems like an awesome guy. Very structured and organized and knows a lot about the courses he teaches.

omg N.a On exams, you either get the answer right or wrong, but you don't exactly know where or how you messed up since the exam itself does not show it. A little more detail on the grading would be appreciated. none Wish I took an in class CE 270 course with Hanai so that I would have been able to talk directly to him and develope some sort of student/instructor relationship.

He is very knowledgeable of the subject.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Don't make CE classes online. please do not offer this class on line again Do not offer this class on-line ever again present it better less shortcuts Finish problems completely to show all steps no CE 271 is not an easy class, and doing it online made it harder. Being able to see a teachers real life/physical explanations is a good way to understand the subject or concepts better. But, its nice to have recordings to watch if you miss class or don't understand something very good the first time. So maybe keep the lectures online and available to next semesters students. Hopefully they utilize the recordings/PDFs. do not do this class via blackboard anymore, and assign homework Don't teach straight from the book, rather use the book as an outline. Go into more detail with examples, sometimes important topics are glanced over. He should have office hours in the a little earlier

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

If you could meet at his office hours, he was an extremely great help in person. Not the same on line because the class became very difficult to participate in. Either you get what he is saying, or you don't. Also was very helpful with any questions outside of class in office hour or by email. Encouraged us to do our homework yes A little hard to show concern over the computer, but he explained things multiple times and reviewed a lot so that the class understood what was taught. Wants to make sure everyone is following and that they understand the material. He didn't show much concern.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Only if the class wasn't online. Because in class he can explain things easier and its easier to ask questions. Yes, but only if there was an actual classroom. yes, Great for in class teaching I would recommend Aaron Hanai to anyone because he is a fair teacher who does his best to help the students succeed. Yes, but not the online class I would not, but personally I think that is my learning style and not something against Prof. Hanai. The reason is that this was my first serious online class for Mechanical Engineering and I just feel this method isn't tangible enough and not an adequate substitute for being in the classroom relatively distraction free compared to a computer. This is just my personal preference as I tend to get distracted sometimes. Also this semester there was no homework component of the grade and therefore no extrinsic motivation for me. yes Yes, class seems hard but he teaches the class very well. Yes. For reasons stated above. Yes. I would, probably because this was an online class. My mistake to take an online class. Would recommend if the classes werent online

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

I don't think this is a good reflection of his teaching ability. The online system of learning is very tough, especially for a class that is very tough. This class is to hard to be taught on line nothing Nothing Please only have in class classes, online doesn't seem the best

He is a much more effective teacher in person, the online system should not be used for any technical type of class. Online classes are terrible for Engineering, I wish I took this at UH instead of KCC.

I did not notice a concern, so I cannot comment. However, when I did ask questions, he tried his genuine best to answer it clearly enough for me to understand. Professor is great at explaining things, once helped me out before an exam in lecture even though he is not my lecture Professor.

He wasn't really much of a teacher, but more of a supervisor. The class is set up so that you and your group are teaching yourselves. I think most students would like a teacher in class, with some guidance. Therefore, no I would not recommend. Yes, definitely, great Professor!

Nice guy, really smart, but I think he has a lot more stuff going on in his life as a teacher and this class just got the short end of the stick. Keep up the good work!

His knowledge on his topic was stronger than any professor I've ever had I think. he was very helpful in explaining things we had trouble with I think that he is a very smart and has a much to offer due to his experience as an engineer. He grades test and quizzes quickly and returns them. He knows the material very well and is able to convey a depth of knoldge to the subject that can be useful to then take apart most problems in a logical manor. He knows the subject very well. There was no doubt that Aaron was completely versed in his subject matter. There was never a moment that I asked a question and I was met by a quizzical look. He knows the subject very well. He was very clear with the materials and very knowledgable. Blocking students from passing physics 170. Mr. Hanai is very friendly and helpful. He is always willing to help you if you have any questions. Strong Physics background and educated in subject.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

I loved the way he graded exams AFTER the first one. The way exam #1 was graded was a little extreme from a students perspective. But after that, I really enjoyed the class. none I think that some of the classes seem to be a repeat of others, where we cover the same material that we did before. I think that if he cut those parts out and gave out more quizzes before the test it would better prepare us for the test and also know what kind of format he expects from us. Also, one of the chief things he says is "try this at home and change or add things to it" the problem is, many of us our already confused about the subject and don't know how to do it in the first place, let alone modifying it to make more complex in the first place. Having maybe sample problems we could look at worked out or with the answers would be helpful and we have can ask questions about those. Grading on the first test was a bit harsh. More quizes or other work that wouldnt impact grade as much as provide feedback to the student as to where they stood knoledge wise before the test came. Leave the last week for review, there is so much stuff covered and to be learning new material 4 days prior to a final could be prevented. Slow down, interact with students more. Have students do some problems in class and help if needed. Assign homework or suggest specific problems. Perhaps, another avenue of accruing credit rather than mandatory PLUS sessions, since it was difficult for those with complicated schedules to meet that aspect of class curriculum. Organize lecture notes more clearly, possible emphasis important sections in notes ( sometimes concepts are not understood when having to copy down proofs and not knowing what is being copied) I think towards the end of the semester we were given more time and examples to review for the exams. I think the changes he made in teaching should be the same from the begining of the semester. Learn how to teach and grade. Talk to good teachers, someone who has experience. It doesn't matter how much he knows if he cannot teach it at the level of perfection he expects when grading. I love this class. I think it is perfect If there were more personalized homework other than doing every problem. Perhaps suggested problems to do instead of a hundred problems a week

After exam #1, by giving students a quiz prior to the exam so that they knew somewhat what to expect on the exam. Excellent process in my opinion. was always there to answer questions The best thing I think he did was make us go to the plus sessions and to change and give is quizzes before the tests. Yes when the grading became a issue he listened and adressed those issues while still maintain clear expectations with the students. There was never a moment that Aaron was not able to stop and answer a question fully for a student. He gave tons of extra credit. He is always easy to find in his office or classroom. He didn't show any concern as far as I could tell, even when I would talk to him one-to-one. Mr. Hanai gave us extra credits on exams and prepare us well for the tests Warned students of the difficulty of the course and strongly implored PLUS session participation for student success.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I would because he was friendly and very knowledgable. As a prospective engineer, I liked that he knew what I was trying to accomplish because he had accomplished it himself. yes i would. he knows his stuff I would for a certain type of student, those that are comfortable studying on their own or those enjoy taking a class where most of the grade was based on tests. yes the class is enjoyable and he conveys the knoledge well and shows how it can be extrapolated and applied. No, he is very hard to follow. He does example problems in class on the board, but at a pace that is extremely too fast for anyone to follow. Answers your questions very vaguely. For all engineering students, and natural science students as well, Aaron is the ideal teacher. He is coming from the perspective of an engineer himself, but a science-phile as well. Yes, because he's straight forward, can explain the subjects well and clearly, and can give many real-life application examples, which makes the class more interesting. Yes, He knows the subject and he is able to break down the materials in components. I would not recommend him to anyone. Unless you master the material you will have difficulty getting any points on tests or quizzes. He does not do partial grading well. Yes, he is very friendly and helpful

N/A I think a better sense of organization would be helpful and having a clear plan for the class that day would help move the class along better, there were times when I thought that he was confused about where exactly he wanted to go with a subject. He is extremely smart, I admire that but feel like he needs to slow down to teach the students. I learned volumes by the lecture classes I took from Aaron, I'm very grateful . Thank you very much. Answers everyone's questions thoroughly. He's knows the material very well and is really good at explaining the material and makes sure everyone understands the material. He knows his stuff. He new the material well and made it easy to learn. He could also explain things well. As a teacher, he was able to make himself readily available for questions even moments before class. He was also able to clearly explain steps and procedures to things as to not confuse people. Aaron Hanai is very knowledgable and has a great understand of everything he teaches so he is able to teach in a way everyone understands and it is straight to the point. Knows subject area well. Aaron Hanai is very knowledgeable on many different subjects and helps us to relate life applications to what we are learning without straying from the material too far. When we don't understand something, he'll take the time to explain it. He's very clear on what he expects from us. knows the material extremely well, answers all questions, very approachable, and tries very hard to explain material in a way that everyone will be able to understand. Getting students to understand the hard subjects, He wont move on until everyone undertands. he teaches in a very clear manner Explaining problems Ability to explain abstract theory was pretty good, he was also organized and willing to go over anything we had problems with. Very knowledgeable of subject matter, easy to talk to. He is very knowledgeable about the information. so far so good Good communicator and has practical knowledge of the subject material which he imparts to his students. His accessability outside of class hours is fantastic. He wants to make sure you understand what to do and how to do it. Make the tests easier if you want people to pass your class. N/A Maybe have the students participate in lectures by asking them what they might think the answer is rather just going through everything. Just be sure to watch the time as class usually ends later than the supposed time. N/A No changes. use a computer program that will allow the students to get on-line before 3-4 weeks into the class. This was not Aaron's fault, but was the fault of the Pearson publishing company along with the KCC bookstore. Students are paying a lot of money to get this program which is a very useful learning tool if the publishing company cared a little more about the students education. It seems as though the company only cares about sales, and not about getting the learning tool to the students. It was a hassle to get our first homework assignment, and some students could not get their first assignments until the week of the first exam!!!! get all the problems worked out of mastering engineering online program before the beginning of class. none None awesome I am happy. none in mind none Better on-line component/text. Use of smartboard/archive notes. Co-ordinate with math requirements better. I found myself needing to teach myself the math. The 3rd midterm was way too long..

If we had any issues or problems, he'd take the time to listen and make the best decisions for us possible. He really knows the material Aaron is very knowledgable about the subject and makes sure the students understand the key points of the course. Able to explain complicated material in a organize and understandable fashion. He teaches outside the book, more than we actually needed and what the book itself would cover. If we are able to get everything he covered during the lectures, homework is a piece of cake. Every thorough with his lectures and is very efficient in answering student's questions. Aaron knew his subject very well and takes time to express things to the finest details. His able to do the same problem using any method. Even though he goes rapidly with the subject.I like that he reiterates key steps. good knowledge of the subject and teaches very well. He understands the material well and can disassemble the problems into smaller components when students are having difficulty conceptually. He explains the concepts thoroughly He knows the subject area well and puts the material into layman's terms well. he is very knowledgable of the subject matter

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

nothing he is doing good just the way he does it Grading for exams were a bit steep and left barely any room for error. A possible change in grading? Nothing in general, his class is a ten out of ten for me. Caring for students, he stays after class to address any problem related to physics and engineering outside or inside the course. One time I asked him a course related problem, he was able to explain it in the simplest way, he is very knowledgeable in the field. Class was interesting and is a very self-efficient learning class! No changes in my opinion. If any, I think he could pause and ask if the class is following. I sometimes have hard time keeping up copying what is on the board and at the same time understanding the flow of steps. none Firstly, any college should expect the students to do the required work outside of class. It seems to be the standard operating procedure of KCC to slow down classes in order to drag students with poor work ethics along. Class time should be spent discussing mechanics problems. If students aren't reading the book and working on the problems on their own, that should be their loss, not the class'. Secondly, every midterm had a review day, a day of the test, and a day going over the exam afterwards. That's three days used up per midterm. Nine class periods of the semester. We didn't get to 3D kinematics and dynamics. How are we supposed to be mechanical engineers without 3D kinematics and dynamics? Had we spent those nine class periods moving forward instead of catering to the most negligent students, we might have gotten to 3D motion. As it is, I'll have to learn it on my own, which I intend to do. How many of the remaining students that pass will take that initiative? The class should absolutely get through 3D motion. Whatever pace is required to get there is what pace the course should set. Students that can't keep up should probably not be pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Thirdly, and finally, we could use some visual aids. It's a mechanics class. Let's get some machines in there. Put lectures on Youtube Perhaps consider slowing down a bit during lectures. none

not to sure i never went to him for help. However he did offer extracredit which is a way of showing concern waited until all the necessary elements of each section was presented thoroughly before moving on. reminded students about homework and exams dates. Like I mention he is able and willing to address problems which we have, throw anything at him and he will be able to address it. He answered student's question very thoroughly and helped students in any way he could. setting us up for success with his teachings He keeps more office hours than he is required. He is always willing to field questions. He was usually available in his office when not in class to discuss problems from the homework or just to talk about engineering stuff. he took time after class to go over any student concerns about the subject

yes you learn a lot and the information is clear yes. Aaron is a great professor. I was able to understand more than was the course offers. Taking his class will help in gaining a deeper understanding of the subject. Guarantee, after two other teachers at KCC, Andrew Pak of the Math department and Herve Collin of the Physics department, he is one of another few professors which actually care for his students and is good at teaching. Yes because Professor Hanai is a very good professor and in my opinion he is better than professors at uh manoa teaching the same course. Aaron is a good choice for an instructor. You have to keep up with homework and notes every class because he does move quite fast. go over hw problems in class This was Aaron's first time teaching CE271 and he's still relatively new to teaching. He did a sufficient job and will only improve as he identifies the teaching strategies that work. I would recommend Aaron as a mechanics instructor to future students. Very organized!!!!!! Take his time to explain the course . He knows that students learn at their own pace, so he let's them do so. He also knows a lot of tricks about math that really help on the tests if you do attend his classes and not just the review sessions. Aaron's major strengths as a teacher are that he tries to relate to his students on the same math level and throughout the lecture he tries to make sure everyone understands the material. he knew the subject Thorough He knows the subject well... He knew what he was talking about and went at a reasonable pace during lectures. granted he knows the material knew subject well and is very cheery. He's very amicable. He is really good at teaching the material step by step. He knew his material well. he goes over how to do certain math problems thoroughly and explains each step in how to get the answer. this is really helpful rather than just giving us the answer. Gets our grades out to us quickly and answers our e-mails. He's fair His strengths as a teacher was he knew what he was talking about and he knew how to explain it enough were i could understand. his teaching methods

No changes none to be more clear, and find a better way to engage the students in class. It was a little hard to fallow along in class, sometimes it was very confusing the way he presented the material. n/a None. Speak in a clearly organized way and louder needs to have interaction, participation. Needs to explain a little bit slower more extra credit? I would suggest challenging students to answer questions during class. Doing is better than listening or reading. I would also suggest encouraging peers to study together outside of class. It can be awkward at first but invaluable when students study together. The teacher can be a key in getting students to interact. Involve the class more with interactive questions with the lesson. I think he should let the students do some problems on their own to see whether we all get it or not. That way he can see what we need help with the most. i think he needs to write bigger. he starts off writing big and then it gets smaller. he should also write from the right side of the room to the left side, that way he doesn't cover what he is writing while students are trying to copy. Better way of explaining difficult problems would be very helpful. He needs to present the materials in a way that captivates the student. The way he presents the information makes me not want to be there. Make it a little more enthusiastic. Class got boring a lot of times. speak up a little bit more, I sat in the back of a big class. other than that, great teacher.

Aaron always made it clear to ask questions about any material covered. he reminded us of important dates. encouraging He would always ask if there were any questions and was willing to answer any questions that came up. hardly went to class after first exam stays behind after class to answer any questions. He was available to be contacted by email outside of class. In the way he taught lesson to his students. Going over a lesson and its steps more then twice to make sure the student understood. After class student would ask him for help or ask him to explain something concerning the lecture and he helped them the best way he could have. he asks us if there are any questions during his lecture. also, he ask us if we have problem with homework or anything sometimes. E-mail class dates of exams changes in case they were not in class. Dont ask me... He would notify us if he wasn't coming or not. and would help us review for our test. not really to me, but he does send emails about exams and homework etc.

Yes Aaron is a good teacher and wants to help you to learn as long as you are willing to put in the effort. no. because i had a hard time learning the material, i learned more from doing the homework. yes, thorough No, if you don't already understand basic math then I think this teacher would be too hard to understand I would recommend him to students because he is laid back and explains things thoroughly. Yes because the assignments are straight forward no very nice and friendly. easy to learn and understand. I would recommend Mr. Hanai because he does a clear and effective job in teaching. His class is not difficult to pass. His teaching style is valuable to those who are eager to get through school quickly. Yes, he's a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and willing to help students who had more questions outside of class. His knowledge of the course He really knows the course material. Aaron knows the material inside and out. He's very knowledgeable and friendly. His knowledge and ability to use mathematics to explain physics make him a very strong professor. great professor... but i think homework should be extra credit! Knows subject well and good teaching methods. He showed students how well he knew the material by very rarely going into tangents about the current material. He slowly introducing concepts in later chapters and finishing his sentence with '... but we will get into that later.' helpfulness, knowledge of material, ability to teach the material in easy to understand manner, always understanding and fair, and always able to organize a meeting with him. He knows his material inside and out. He knew physics in and out. He was always ready to help students with their work if they came in for it. He knows physics very well, and can always answer students questions clearly. He knew his what he was talking about very well. He knew the subject matter very well. Knowledge/Expertise of subject; openly understanding personality with constructive help.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Teach more classes. NA More examples in class!!! Also, please ask questions on exams about material that has an associated example from lecture. Some of the short answer questions involved combining theories that were reviewed in class, but no example of the way to combine the two theories were given in class. This made doing the question on the test very difficult, especially under time constraints. I think the exams should move away from multiple choice and partial credit be given for showing work. Even though the answer could be wrong, I think allotting partial points for an exam allow students to know that their theory or application of formulas are sound but would need more care on the details. hw=extra credit! Make more tests (every 2 weeks) or make each test have more questions. n/a none Hand-outs would be nice. He needs to write his notes in a linear format. He bounces around too much so it's hard to figure out where to write it when we're taking notes down on a paper. He also goes off topic quite a few times and it was confusing to figure out how that pertained to what we were talking about. He also did the algebra in his head which was hard to follow. He sometimes would show it on the board but then he would erase some of the steps and then write out something different so you didn't know how he arrived at a particular problem. Take attendance for his classes. May be the online class was not a good idea because a lot of people had trouble logging in and could not access their accounts. I would suggest finding new ways to have people learn the understand the material better. The homework online was very difficult. Perhaps, you could have homework that we can go over in class. Being that it is a difficult class, give more opportunities for people to boost their grades since our grade is based on just homework and tests. I feel that the criteria is great, but towards the end of the semester I felt the path was vague. So if possible, a detailed tentative guideline would be very beneficial to students!

Taking the time to fully explain the material being taught in the class during and outside of lecture. He tried to make us understand the best way possible Students are free to ask questions and have ways of contacting him. He is happy to work with students outside of class to help them to understand the material. Open office hours, and availability outside of class. His easy going demeanor and his desire to try to simply explain complex ideas for students who have a difficult time understanding material. availability Helped them. n/a office hours, helped students with material that was hard, understanding towards student problems, if needed you were able to reschedule meetings He would constantly remind us when tests were. He was always there after class to help students. Because of the 50 minute time restraint it always felt like we were rushing through the topics we were trying to cover. Allowing everyone to openly ask questions, this is the best way to learn!

He is fun to talk to and his class room style is very easy to keep up with. yes.. but gotta study lots! Yes, tough subject but good teacher. Yes. He is very clear and understandable. None. nothing. Maybe make the lab reports for this class a little easier. This is a beginning lab class (100 level) I don't think that the lab write-ups should be at the same difficulty level as the upper level physics labs. Filling in a data sheet and answering some short answer questions about the lab sounds a lot more like the appropriate level of a 100 level class. Oh and I forgot... for the regular physics class... please add a curve!!! (Regular curve, not bell curve) It's weird that KCC's physics class is harder then UH Manoa's Physics class on grading. Almost everyone at least passes the Physics 151 class at UH. make labs like class problems Take attendance and make it part of the grade. I slacked off half way during the semester because I thought as long as I get a good grade on the test I would be OK. However, one of my tests didn't go well because the question was exactly like the one we did in class.

Yes. he is superb. His work is not really stressful, so he is not really strict in grading. Yes. He's nice, and the contents are clear, not a picky teacher.

Explains things clearly and completely. If I could video record his lectures I probably wouldn't need a book. Understands the students point of view. Teaches for the the students. He knows the material in and out and knows how to explain topics in depth. Being able to break every step of a problem down so that the students could clearly understand what was being demonstrated. Aaron Hanai is one of the best engineering professors I ever had. He is very knowledgeable in the material he teaches and he can communicate well with his students to explain the ideas and concepts behind each engineering problem. Outside of KCC, Aaron is a very well-respected instructor who is known for his kindness to his students and his skills to teach each student to understand how to approach different problems, no matter how quick the student can grasp the material concepts. Aaron's method of teaching is very effective for me, his concepts are presented before his topic is revealed so by the time he is done, I already have a good idea of the topic. He is also a very kind teacher who gives out a great learning atmosphere for me. Breaks down the lessons step by step that is very easy to grasp. He is always willing to answer any questions that are presented. Overall a great teacher who cares about his students. He knew the subject area very well, helped students readily in and out of class, would always take time to explain why things are a certain way, and was overall an easy guy to talk to. He grades tests incredibly fairly and honestly. He would go step by step as to how to solve certain problems and would justify why you should go about doing it a certain way rather than some other way. He's helps students to learn the material by doing many example problems in class. His understanding of the material. Great teacher. Presents material very cleary and is very engaging. One of the best teachers I have ever had. Would recommend him to anybody. He always made time for questions even outside of office hours. He knows the subject really well. He doesn't phase out and think about what he has to say next. He is always prepared for class. Professor Hanai knew what he was talking about and could teach it in a way that any one could understand. He was helpful and graded fairly.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Post lectures on youtube. All is good. The online homework was a challenge and I don't think it should be used for an engineering class because the students are doing double work. I think the written homework is more sufficent. Not much to suggest except for longer office hours!! I really disliked using the Mastering Engineering online homework program because it wouldn't explain where errors occurred and was rather frustrating to use. I realize that we were piloting the program and there were many bugs and glitches in the homework but having to pay for such a program only added to the frustration. Though he did explain concepts very well in class, sometimes the homework would cover topics that were not explained in the lecture. Because of this I found myself somewhat confused from time to time while doing the homework. There was never any doubt to what was expected. Exams where always relevant to the degree of difficulty experienced in the coursework. Go over the examples slower so we have time to absorb it. I felt like we jumped from one example to another very fast. The grading area. Maybe give more extra credit and keep the homework manageable. None just keep on doing what your doing.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He kept reminding us to complete the homework when he saw that not everyone had finished it. Helped with reviews and questions when ever asked. If students have questions during class he takes the time to fully and completely answer our questions before moving on to the next topic and/or example. Aaron Hanai demonstrated concern for his students by offering as much help as possible to each student in need to understand engineering concepts and ideas. His desire to push his students to succeed in the engineering field is the reason why many students at UH Manoa would prefer to go KCC just to learn how to approach and solve an engineering problem. Unlike many professors, Aaron does a variety of engineering problems and effectively communicate the thought process every step of the way in order for his students fully grasp the idea. Any email questions are answered promptly. Aaron also comes to class a little early to answer any questions. There were always email notifications on things to come, Exam review topics are precise and clear, and he is constantly updating us on things that malfunctioned on out MasteringEngineering homework. He would constantly remind his students to do their homework because he said it was the key to doing well in his class. Had a study day and had a day to go over the test. He was always available for help in class and out. He would talk to us when he saw we were falling behind and give encouragement.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. Good lecturer. Yes, Aaron Hanai is a great teacher. He relates well with students point of view. I would highly recommend Mr. Hanai to other students because he is well knowledge in the field of engineering and he isn't that hard to approach compared to the university profs. Yes I definitely would. I was able to understand the material much better because of the way he presented it to the class and I do believe he genuinely cares about his students success in this course. Yes because overall, he is a great teacher to learn from. Definitely. You can get a lot out of his class because he explains it to so well, and tying his lessons in with real life situations. His grading spread is very fair and just. Gives a lot of time to do homework and make sure the exams are challenging but also gives us ample time to do them. Yes, even though there really isn't much of a choice when it comes to taking Engineering courses. His methods are fairly straight forward. The homework load is kind of intimidating but if you get it all done the tests are much easier than not doing it. The tests are reasonable and the grade you receive pretty accurately represents your level of understanding on the topic. Yes, very knowledgeable, straightforward, fair. Yes, I would recommend him to other students because he is there to help students learn the material. I guess I highly recommend him. He's a really good teacher. One of the best i've had so far. Yes he is a good teacher with good communication skills he gets the info across in a way that isnt intimidating.

Give him more funding so we can have NICER tools. Great guy in and out of class. He goes a bit fast in some material but other than that, he is a great prof. I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. Keep up the good work! He is great overall. I would take 271 with him too if my schedule was not conflicting with night classes. Please don't use Mastering Engineering ever again Nothing else. ... One of the best teachers ever. Huge asset to KCC! Awesome teacher.

Knows his material hes a math genius! and he really tries to teach in laments terms the math language. He knows the subject very well. he teaches well. He knew the subject very well. He try to find ways so we can have a better understand in Math. He gives us hint on how we can find the answers quickly on the test. That way we do not have to show all the step because we have a time limit. He really knew his material. I just wish he would explain more precisely why a problem is worked out that way instead of showing us. very good lectures, helpful exam reviews, super nice! Teaching the sections Professor Hanai knew this subject very well and I thought it was great that he would teach more than one way to solve problems giving student the opportunity to chose what process works better for them. Aaron knew the material very well and clearly analyzed problems. He fit a good amount of material in each class and emailed the class for lessons/exams updates and/or changes. He's a really good teacher. He teaches you all the steps and in the ends, it all falls together as to why you needed to know this and that. He is very good about explaining things when you're confused. His way of teaching is the best I've seen as far as math teachers. Very glad I took this class. Math is taught straight forward and not confusing Very detailed and clear in explaining the subject of matter at hand. He knows the subject area well.

More productivity from fellow students in class. none, hes awesome! Make class a little more engaging, have students participate in lecture so that we can have a sense of understanding nope. I do not like the Math Lab. I also wish we didnt have to buy the book. I didn't even open it, and it was very expensive. . Ask the students what the answer would be and if it is incorrect, ask them how they came to that conclusion and correct them accordingly instead of showing us how to do the problem. In-class assignments I think Aaron is doing an excellent job. I just felt like I got bored. Going to class everyday was long, but I loved how we would get out early! From what I see he just said if you understand the problem. he would stay after class and made it more clear and help if they had a hard time hes always insisted on having people ask questions, and always made sure everyone was ok before moving onto the next subject. He ask questions, but most of the time i was afraid to ask because I felt like I could not ask helping his students He cleared all questions that were asked. He made sure the subject was clear before moving into the next one. good He would be there after class for people who has questions. He replys quickly on via email. He ask the class if we have any questions with the homework. If you are worry about your grade you can email him and he will let you know what you can do to improve your grade. He always stressed that if we have any questions about the homework, to email him the problem and he will answer our question. Or to email him with any concerns that we may have. Asked if we had questions and responded to emails quickly. Extra credit He would stay after class to give more examples or to further explain to help students to understand this subject matter. Aaron made sure everyone understood the material by asking after explaining the problem. Even if there were any wuestions, he would answer them to his best knowledge and effort. He would ask us if we all understood and were following where he was going. I didn't really get confused and the math tutorial on MyMathLab is a miracle worker! During the beginning of the class my online math lab account wasn't working correctly and Aaron responded by getting me help from a tech very quickly He asks us to ask him if we have any questions.

N/A I thought the course was good. ..Maybe Help with the homework online. the Tip section doesn't offer great help all the time if at all. To care for his students. To try to see things from his students perspective. To teach the student that has no clue what is going on and to be able to try to understand how that persons learning style is as well as understand how to teach that student. practice teaching, and be more relaxed and deliberate in his explanations of concepts Homework problem solutions to get an idea of how answer was sought out. N/A the only change i would suggest is, for example, to not erase a side of an equation and change the form, but leave it and right the new form again. does it make sense? The homework problems are very different from the problems from the exam and class examples. I would make the homework more similar to the problems of the test , otherwise is just too much material to cover and it make is very hard to know it all.

made himself available, always. By being available to help students with questions after and outside of class. I don't think he did. give extra credit Gave us a chance to earn extra credit, as well as warning us about studying at least 3 hours a day for each hour in class. He was always available when we needed help, but encouraged us to find our own way to the answer. He did not He was available to talk to in his office. He clarified the goals and the effort students had to put into their learning. YES

Definitively. Yes. He shows genuine concern for his students. As of now no. He just has a lot to learn as a teacher. I'm sure he will get better at it. Top ten professor in campus. I wish more teachers were like him. I'm sure he is a really good guy, however I tried to do something this semester and was unable to complete it. I came to Aaron for some help, but... It's my fault but Just seems like I should have been able to learn way more then I did from the class. Any way. No problem. =)Cool guy. Thank you! I wish I could have you as my Prof next semester as well. I think he should have always wrote the units to show dimensional analysis to show what units cancel out. It was kind of hard to follow when he was writing so fast. This is not a univerisity physics course where the student would expect to know it already. For the days of review before the exam, it was really rushed. I remember he spent about 30 minutes on a whole problem and he couldn't really touch on the other important parts for the test. He has a good vibration.

Hanai was very good at giving you the whole picture. He also was good at giving you an idea of what to look for to know if you were getting close to making an error, and how to avoid common mistakes. when student asked questions he can answer right back. Explains each step by step in solving problems very well while ensuring students understand the purpose behind these steps. he tries to make it as simple as possible so it's easier to understand. He is very nice and it's easy to ask him questions. He was very clear with all his lessons. Since it is a summer course he was very patient when teaching. knows material well and is able to answer student questions quickly He answered questions for students, he showed more examples if needed. Showed concern for students even though the class was fast paced. He makes sure the class understands everything. He is very organized. Easy to relate to Helped students review everything before tests. He knows his material well his major strengths were that he knew his subjects very well and clearly demonstrated it. Clearly explains materials. Completely reviews materials that are on tests. Prompt to class and uses time efficiently. this dude knows whats he's talkin' about. His prompt reply in communication and posting of test results; this being an excellerated summer session, quick replies in order to address misconceptions is essential. Dr.Hanai's strength is also his adept skill in mathematics and helping students understand the theorems/rules by taking the time to show the steps that prove the theorem. His lecture was well organized and he went through details in sloving each problem. Thorough at answering and explaining questions any student may ask. he's very thorough when going over problems he obviously knows what he is teaching very well..

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Perhaps not say things like 'the problem -might- be obvious' I think this saying might be used to give Hanai license to go through the whole problem when some students are bored and can solve the problem in their head, but for those of us who are struggling and occasionally get scoffed at by the class, or mumbles around them from other students while we ask questions, it feels bad, because to them they seem to think 'well he said it was obvious, why is it not obvious to that student that keeps asking questions' NONE, None, very happy with the course. none Prepare the lesson in a clearer way. The organization was not the best. For a clearer lesson, he should write out the steps (all of them, not add some on as he's going), then show an example, using those steps, then prepare other examples and do the same (at least 3 examples per technique). I suggest having daily quizzes, and working through them with the class. none. Make the subject a little more clearer. Possibly give us time to figure out problems. I would ask for quizzes because, it shows where we stand but, it may have been hard to do that with a summer school class. Maybe teach in a more optimistic manner instead of making the material seem like a burden Nothing the homework assigned needs to be revised i think he could make more problems for the students and make them figure it out. Maybe showing a little more confidence when explaining materials. I feel that he is an excellent teacher, being in his summer course I am sure is much different than his semester course; but if it follows his teaching style that I have experienced, it would be in depth teaching/learning, and with genuine concern for the students. No changes that I can suggest come to mind. Nothing special! none more class participation should have a well organized plan of action, such as objectives, rules and plenty of examples of those obectives.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He illustrated what to expect on the midterms so that we could properly prepare. Sometimes professors just let you aimlessly prepare and instead of overstudying 20% like you might with Hanai, you would overstudy like 50% and then forget even more details of the content that was actually relevant... Very patient and was able to look at the lesson being taught through the eyes of the student who was learning it. answers student questions promptly.y He always made sure that everyone didn't have any confusion by asking if anyone had any questions. If they did he would be sure to clear it up. Stayed after class to answer any questions, available during his office hours. He would let us know if he wasnt even going to be available during that day for his hours. He always kep tus in the loop. He always asked if we had questions and took the time to explain things more thoroughly. Yes. He answers his emails immediately. Answering questions in class to the best of his ability He answered all the questions. He often told us to email him with any questions, and when emailed he promptly email back Spends time after class for students with questions. Available during office hours. He let us know from the onset (and even before then), when and where he would be available to answer questions; also I feel he showed concern by promptly responding to emails and by taking time to ask the class if we had any questions or problems with the material at hand. He always asked if we are keeping up with the contents of lecture, he knows some students are not good at speaking out or raising hands to ask questions, so he told us we can show some facial expressions if some of us feel behind the lecture content. I think it's nice of him to suggest that to us. Using his lecture time to answer questions on misunderstood material. he always accepted questions when they came up and went over the subect matter questioned he was esaily accessable and was willing to give up office hours to help us out..

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I would recommend him. It would be difficult to not succeed. I normally fail math classes and I am getting a high B which might go to an A. I am not given what seems like busy work, but just enough work for the problems and methods and formulas to sink in. There is very little extraneous material presented to us. YES, he is very good professor for math department. math is very difficult but he explains very well. Absolutely. Great professor, especially for students who aren't familiar to the subject or intimidated by math. He helps provide students the skills required to advance in other math courses. yes, one of the best math teachers i've had so far. Not necessarily, because unless you already know the material, it would be hard to learn everything the way he teaches. Yes i would. He is a very patient and thourough teacher. yes, because he explains the problems well and tells students what steps not to do to solve the problems. There is an idea in learning called 'primacy' where the first method you learn is the one you will remember the most. It is frustrating at times, because there can be multiple approaches to solve a type of problem, and we will be taught the EASIEST last. I don't know if there is another way to teach it, but if the easiest could be taught first, because when the hardest is taught first, I ALWAYS end up solving that way, and the other one is like Greek to me unless done right in front of my face. Frustrating because it ends up wasting my time during tests and such. BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!! I would say the Aaron Hanai's best areas as a teacher was the fact that even though the class did not fully understand some of the material, He continuously went over it till the class could comprehend it, even though there was so little time to do so in class. He know the material very well. Aaron also makes students feel comfortable in class. Dr. Hanai is an extremely smart man. His understanding of physics was so thorough that he easily kept the course interesting and exciting. He made me feel like physics just made sense as a part of our everyday life. He has a very positive encouraging attitude and it made the material easier to understand. Dr. Hanai knew his materials very well and explained it thoroughly for students to understand and provided ways for students to learn and sink in the material He knows his materials Dr. Hanai is very knowledgeable in the subject area and is willing to help us understand the material despite the quick pace of the course. Very knowledgeable and gives feedback promptly. Understanding the difficulty of the subject and trying to teach it to us so it's easy to understand. Being able to explain terms/concepts in simple vocabulary, and his desire to want his students to learn the subject. Deriving each equation He knew his subject well and was able to convey that knowledge in a way that we as students could understand more readily. Dr. Hanai's major strengths as a teacher is his overwhelming knowledge on physics, engineering, math, and natural sciences. He is incredibly flexible and clearly wants each student to succeed. Dr. Hanai is very knowledgeable in the field and is effective in teaching and presenting the material at a level that the students can understand and keep up with. As a teacher, he was very good at engaging with the students and making them be more interested in the subject matter. As a teacher, he was great in providing a good step by step explanation of the content he presented. He showed how to approach various types of physics problems that we had on our homework or tests. knows the subject really well. Dr. Hanai was very approachable and was always ready and willing to answer any questions students had. He is well educated in his subject and those that relate to it.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

I suggest going over more example problems in class, though this wasn't a very realistic request considering we only had six weeks to learn a semesters worth of physics. Don't let the college provide summer physics classes. It is impossible to learn everything in six weeks. Encourage more after class studying. No changes need to be made since this is a summer course and materials have to be covered in 6 weeks maybe don't make the lessons confusing. It would help if we discussed concepts more in class. Give students time to do example problems on their own before going over them in class. No changes. Pick and choose what information will be presented in class instead of trying to cover the whole chapter. none The only thing I would change is the location of the classroom. It was small and I know that Prof. Hanai had a hard time writing on that small eraseboard. More homework problems similar to exam problems and possibly a small amount of group time where a problem is given and we have to work together to answer the problem, just so we get practice on problem solving and input from peers. In a 151 physics course that has limited time, I think that skipping the derivation of many equations would have saved a lot of time in the class that could have been used in more places. I also feel like some students would have had a better grasp of the material if there were more example problems were given in class. N/A explain slower. It would have been really great if there was an overhead projector in class. Easier homework!

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Dr. Hanai showed concern when students could not keep up with the material, by extending homework dates and slightly curving the grade on the test. He made the grading more appropriate for the class. He was sensitive to the wants and needs of the students. He was always available for tutoring outside of class. He stayed after class and readily responded to email. He also tried to understand what was most difficult for us and help make it easier. He helps out students if they need help He always stayed after class to make sure we were able to get help on the homework. He helps you work through problems if you don't understand or are having trouble on difficult homework assignments. By encouraging them to see him in office hours. He knew how difficult this summer class would be from the get go, and was always available for help. He took the time to explain thoroughly certain questions that were asked. He made sure that students understood what he was trying to explain by asking the class if they didn't understand something and if that were the case then repeated what that student needed to hear to understand the material. Always encouraging us, always trying to make physics as understandable and manageable as it possibly can be. Dr. Hanai was very helpful in finding ways to help students who had a lower grade in the course to get their grades up. He also shares helpful shortcuts and tips when approaching difficult homework problems. When a student didnt understand a certain aspect of the lesson he did his best to explain it in an easy way. If we needed more help he was always willing to help through email, office hours, and after class. He actually cares if his students do well in class. He changed how the grading was weighted so it will be benefit the students. he lessened workloads to accommodate the exam schedule.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I would recommend Dr.Hanai to other students, although the class went by extremely fast Dr. Hanai was still able to effectively teach the material and get the students to learn what was important in physics. yes i would recommend Aaron Hanai to other students. However I would strongly urge them to take the class during a 16 week semester and not during the summer. Absolutely. He's a teacher and a role model. I would strongly recommend Dr. Hanai because he knows his material and can help the student instantly on a question they are struggling in and need help of how to solve the problem Yes, because he's very fair. Desire to help his students learn the content of the course. Explain lecture thoroughly so that the lab was easy to understand. He was great in explaining the objectives of the lessons we needed to cover, explaining it, and always available for help. He really knows the subject material and is willing to make sure we understand what we did in lab. Very knowledgeable. He is very nice and always ready to help if there are questions.

Maybe a little too critical on lab report grading. This is a 100 level course, and this was the first lab for many students. none none During the first couple labs, I felt like we were kind of on our own. But after that, he was available during lab to help. Assign better written lab reports for students to preform. n/a

Always made time to help. He answered and helped us out whenever we had any questions about the lab. He was always available after class,his office hours, and replied promptly in emails. He stayed in the room or nearby to answer any questions. Explained problems that we had difficulty with. If we were confused on any parts of the lab, he would try to guide us through without telling us the answer.

brilliant He is obviously very knowledgeable and always responded to emails very promptly. He's a nice guy willing to help any of the students. He is so realistic when it comes to math. He taught what we NEEDED to know And didnt waste time with crazy useless math. Really my favorite math professor ever. knew his material. I like the format for the test He is there to help the students succeed and he is really helpful He really understands math alot and maintains our learning in a easy pace. clearly explaing procedures very open to taking questions, helps after class, kind I feel that his strengths as a teacher was that he really knew his material making the class very smooth. I also feel that he honestly cared about his students education. His major strengths are making the material easy to learn using everyday vocabulary. He gives examples that are more easier to understand than the book. Knows the material. Knows the subject area well. Being fairly honest about the faults of the textbook and what's actually useful. He knows math. He knows how to teach the class in a simple and understanding way. breaks down often complicated formulas and concepts by presenting it in a more clear way which makes it easier to understand. very understanding towards the different levels in math of his students. cool class Dr. Hanai is very passionate in the subject he teaches due to a very high knowledge degree that he has (: He knew what he was talking about and tried to simplify the content as much as he could. Professor Hanai is a well educated professor and KCC is fortunate to have him! He is very friendly and knows his materials very well to lecture the class only the main concepts (: I liked the way he explained whatever he was teaching that day in class. He gave clear examples and presented them on the board with clear methods on how to find the solution. He gave homework and that helped me tremendously on understanding the material because that allowed me to practice the problems repeatedly and understand the homework. That helped me to improve on the exams as well. He knew the material and was able to teach it to us in a way we could understand.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

relax He needs to learn more personable skills. The class was very boring & he looked a bit uncomfortable in front of the class. He's a nice guy, but needs to engage the class in a more effective way to hold their interest. NOne go over the homework before turning in. Nothing None not much continue to do what he is doing the tone only in the beginning of class to talk louder and clearer. to work out the algebra of the problems completely instead of putting the answer to it. The changes I suggest are speaking a bit more loudly. no changes! Speak louder More examples of some of the more complex equations would of helped. Speaking more loud and clearly would greatly help future students who choose to sit in the farther seats of the class. Writing more clearly and larger on the white board would also help students that take notes. These things added would be the icing on the cake. cool class Possibly collect homework a day or two before exam so you can pass it back to us students to study a little more. None. Maybe make his students participate more so he knows that his class understands the material by having us do some problems on the board, even with his help. None.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

patiently explaining, going over difficult material several times When my father passed away and I missed his class he was extremely supportive and understanding. He answered e-mails quickly & helped anyone with questions. The 1 page of notes for tests also helped a lot. He took time to tutor me outside of class when I had difficulty in a chapter asked if students had questions. Allowing to turn in late hw He kept us posted on everything the office time is great and taking time after class yes happy to answer questions He structured his class to be relevant to our lives and made it so that we would all get good grades. Neutral. There was no reason for Aaron Hanai to be concerned with me. By letting us know what exactly is going to be on the test & he answers u back on email. Having an understanding that most of us aren't going into math heavy degrees and being rather lenient. He was available in giving office time to work individually with his student. He was quick to let know to students their standing in the course as to see if some students had better drop the class due to low grades. Even if students have low grades, he allowed for late work to be turned in which is a huge gift to students who struggle to turn in work on time. cool class He cares by going over any homework problems that students are stuck on. He also breaks certain sections down to an understandable point for the students to learn (: He also offers fair amount of extra credit points too! By taking any questions anyone had as well as holding review classes. He goes over any hw problems that students have troubles with. He is willing to break down every steps there is to solving a problem until the students understands it. He gives fair amount of hw problems and also extra credits on the tests too! He constantly asked during class if any of us had any questions, and people usually asked for help then or after class. He showed that he was available to help his students and I really appreciated that. He was always willing to answer any questions we had if we didn't understand something.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

yes, he is a very good teacher, and a very nice person too I'm not sure. Although he was very fair and understanding I found it easier to learn on my own with my textbook because he wasn't very engaging in class. Sure, he knows how to explain the material in a plain english way so more people understand. Absolutely!! yeah he is good teacher. Yes, great teacher Yes because he is a very good teacher and he respects students yes because he teaches in a great manner and always is open to questions. hes a good teacher because if you show effort but is struggling, he will see that and help you understand yes, he keeps it real I would highly recommend Aaron Hanai as a teacher. Makes the class very easy to learn. Yes, he gets the job done. Yes because you really learn & understand the material in his class. Yes, very well grading structure Yes, he is very understanding, teaches and shows concerns for his students. I would definitly recommend Mr. Hanai to future students due to his teaching method that makes learning math especially an easier task for those who have no interest for math whatsoever. Great teacher. cool class Dr. Hanai has a high degree in math which is a great thing to students because he was once a student, therefore, he was able to lecture the class by breaking down the main points for students to understand. If you have a problem, don't hesitate to ask because he will go over it with you thoroughly until you understand the concept. He is very generous and always smiling in class which gives the class a welcoming and learning environment feeling (: Sure, he knew what he was doing and explained things pretty well. YES! Professor Hanai is a great knowledgeable math professor! He knows his materials very well and is able to break down steps in solving certain problems in a very simple way. He assigns fair amounts of hw that are great practice problems for his tests which are reasonable too! Yes, I definitely would because he is not confusing and he explains the lesson very well and in a way that every student can clearly understand what he is explaining. He is not intimidating and a very nice person. He gives many examples during class, which helped a lot for me this semester. Yes,because he's a great teacher and I actually learned something.

He was really dead - on his teaching. He went straight to the math problems to start the class. He is very patient and will go over the material clearly. It was obvious that he knew the subject. He is a very nice and understanding teacher. His major strengths was teaching the class clearly without leaving any unknown explanations. If there was any, he redoes the question till the student understands. Knowledge of subject. He is able to convey that knowledge to the class in a comprehensible and orderly way. Good disposition. Mr Hanai is usually smiling. He knows his subject well and is good at teaching it in the most concise way possible. Made math easier to understand. He was very clear in teaching. Exams score was posted up fairly quickly and was there when help is needed! Understanding the students point of view, and not making unnecessary difficulties with the course! Mr.Hanai's presentations are exceptionally organized and easy to understand. He creates a class environment that is comfortable and accommodating. Making his subjects fun and easy to learn. Knew subject material very well He was able to explain math problems in different ways and show how they would be applied. He knows his material inside out! He was able to explain the material very clearly which made it easy to understand. He is a good math teacher. He is really good at Math. teaching step by step. slowly. His knowledge of subject material. Professor Hanai gave every student a chance to do well in his class, like giving extra credit, gave us a page of open notes for exams and gave us more than needed time on homeworks due. He wanted all his students to do well in his class but also be well prepared for future math classes or in Math in general. He goes over the problems step-by-step in detail Explains step by step. Being sympathetic understanding of different schedules to accomadate the student. He explained a topic thoroughly, and if there were any questions or misunderstandings he would help and give more examples so that we could understand it more. He knows the subject very well, he is willing to answer questions the students may have. He teaches me very well even outside of the class. His class is very clear and easy to follow. Great modern teacher. He allows you to focus on the main ideas and practical learning of the subject. You don't have to memorize equations, but it's more important to learn how to use them and apply during real life situations. I definitely appreciated his teaching style. he knows how to explain the topic in easier and step by step way. He tells everything that is needed to be on tests... Good at math, knows how to explain so its easy to understand His major strengths is that he knows what he is teaching and never wastes time. His notes and examples are always well organize and is also very fair and understanding to the students. He's a very nice teacher- and he understood that alot of students had a hard time with the subject, so he'd always be nice enough to go through the problems and sections again til' the whole class got a better idea of it. The professor taught the course clear enough and I like the fact how the professor was really lenient, nice and understanding and gave us chances and wasn't anal like other professors when it came to past deadlines! He was always on-time to class too. Dr. Hanai has a clear understanding and passion for the material, and goes out of his way to make things as comprehensible as possible. SPEAK CLAER Detailed explanation of the problem He was good at asking us questions about wether we understood the problems of the course or not. he was comfortable with us asking questions anytime thoughout the class. As a teacher, I think he is very inexperienced. The classes he taught were often useless. He made all the problems so look so easy on the whiteboard, but since we never had any interaction, he pretty much wrote what was on the textbook, it was very hard for me to do the homework. He also uses easy questions for class, but when it comes to exams, the questions often implied 2 or more twisting concepts that I was like "what the... we never did THIS in class" So unless you already are a math wizard like him and can make it look so easy, it wasn't for the rest of the class who were just learning. I learned more from the student tutor and had a hard time even doing homework. I think he will be a better teacher with experience though. He is always willing to help out the students, puts the lessons in words students can understand. He is always there on e-mail and will answer your questions very promptly! Will always admit fault when makes a mistake or is unclear. Will explain things 100 times if needed to make sure people understand. Not only teaches the subject criteria, but gives example of how the material will be used in the real world. Very nice and approachable guy. Responds immediately to emails after hours. he made the exams fairly in the content and amount of problems he knows a lot and teaches many ways to do the problems. He has a friendly atmosphere about him, and always asks the students if they have any questions for him, showing that he cares and wants to make sure if people are listening. N/A I would try and find little ways to get the class to participate in the learning. Whether that be by having them doing problems on the board, etc., but I do think class participation would be beneficial to learning. I believe he is a good teacher and does not need to change anything. If anything, he should give out more EC, so that if a student may mess up on his exam, he still has chance to bring his grade up. none Everything was excellent about this class. Only thing that may need to be improved on is his speaking volume. Writing a little bigger and speaking louder will help students a bit. None I would suggest you allow students to do more practice work in class maybe more handouts instead of pure lectures I would suggest a sign in sheet... I am sure that if there are students who skipped classes, there grades would reflect that. Still, it would be nice to have attendance count for a small percentage of my grade. Your teaching approaches might be little light. You could pick people to go up and solve a problem from here and there. No.
