13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very knowledgable
He really encourages students to participate in class and is very clear/speaks clearly when he teaches. It's easy to understand him and he make sure to constantly ask students how they're doing/questions they may have and does them all.
He is easy to find outside of class and very through when answering questions.
Aaron knows his material very well. He can solve problems by just looking at them and knows how to do them in a timely manner.
He is a good teacher. He is fair with his students and his online lectures are good.
Provides excellent examples and has a vast understanding of the subject. Able to explain certain topics in a simple manner.
That he knows the subject very well and if you do what his sutested studyou habits and practice problems regularly. You will do good in class.
Aaron is definitely smart and he knows he's material. He's very friendly and when you have a question he'll answer it.
He explains the content of this course very well. He gives great examples and works them out so everyone can understand.
He is extremely knowledgeable. Easier to understand than the textbook.
Aaron Hanai clearly understands and is knowledgeable of course material.
He is engaging and interactive. Great class! Hanai is professional and committed to the course.
Very good at explaining how to do problems, way more informative than the solution manual.
great teacher all around, knows his stuff
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
NOT ENOUGH TIME ON TESTS
Yes, I wish he could teach at Manoa.
I would suggest that he slows down when he does his teaching and process of doing a problem. People feel overwhelmed when he is able to finish a problem within one minute and only using barely a page. I wish for him to finish through the problems we do online.
I think assigning homework would help his students learn a little better.
The class is good
When grading the test just making notes of why we missed the points would help.
Less handwaving and more thorough/finishing of examples--at least once per section so we know if we're doing it right. For "homework," pick specific problems that are similar to those on the exam so we don't have to go through 50+ problems for each chapter. More time for exams or slightly shorter exams with current time restriction since these are the only thing we are going to be graded on.
There are no suggestions. Knowing that this course is online, students may have a hard time asking questions during lecture.
None.
I don't think exams should make up the bulk of our grade. There is no graded homework, so if you do poorly on the exams, you will do poorly in the class. Aaron has a tendency to relate course material to other calc/physics courses at KCC. I don't think he should do this, as not everyone is taking his courses concurrently with CE270. For example I haven't taken those courses in almost a year. Aaron also has a tendency to start problems in lecture and not complete them (doesn't use a calculator, doesn't finish lengthy math, etc.) I think all problems should be completed in their entirety, so when we look back on the material to study there is no confusion. Aaron should consider giving out study guides to his students before exams. Simply telling students to do every single problem in the chapter (there are literally 100+ problems per chapter) until we understand the concept is unreasonable and just plain lazy, especially when we are not given guided solutions to these problems.
Extra credit please!!
N/A
maybe give more time for exams
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Constantly asked how they were doing and if they had any questions. Never made a student feel dumb or self conscious during lectures. He also made every effort to answer ALL questions/comments
fairly a lot of concern.
He is able to show us how he would approach the problems in various methods so that we can choose the one we are most comfortable with. I wish he was in his office more so that I could have dropped by to ask for him rather than emailing or waiting for his arrival to his office.
He dedicates class time to answer student questions
Always has a review before any exam. Easily accessible outside of class. Provides quick feedback following an exam. Responds to emails fairly quickly.
Yes by suggesting which part we should focus more to study.
He explains every question thoroughly and asks if we understand.
There were PLUS sessions available and we were free to ask any questions.
He offered some extra credit.
Willing to help students understand CE 270.
He would go through all problems that we asked of him.
answered any questions we had
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he is accurate and precise.
Yes. Tests are difficult but overall great teacher.
I would, he is a great teacher and his test are written fairly.
I would recommend Aaron to other students because he knows his material very well and that he proves a challenging course which I believe every student should experience especially if you are an engineering major.
Yes, he is smart and overall a good teacher
While the class can seem a bit crazy at times, I would definitely recommended other students take this class - provided they have a clear understanding phys170 and is willing to put in an effort. This subject isn't the easiest, however Aaron's lectures are clear and easy to understand. The examples provided in class are also useful. It is also imperative that students take advantage of the review days and come ready with questions, since he tries to answer as much as he can. As stated above, he understands the subject and knows how to explain every topic in a clear, effective way.
Yes, because he is a good instructor
Yes, but only if they already know/understand most of the subject matter and/or are good at self- learning/teaching.
Yes, I would recommend him to any student who wants to learn CE 270.
Yes! He knows his stuff, easier to understand, reliable source. Tells you the main points you'll need as an engineer.
Not personally. I do not think he spends enough time on the material. These are complex concepts and he fails to go in depth. In the beginning of the course he spent a lot of time proofing the material which I did not feel was helpful AT ALL. He should of spent more time on solving problems and completing the in their ENTIRETY.
Yes.
Yes because you're guaranteed to learn something rather than just passing the course.
yes, but only if they're capable of doing the work
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Could you have more office hours more please! It's rarer to sight you compared to a unicorn! haha

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Dr. Hanai's major strengths as a teacher came from his background as an engineer, as well as general knowledge and applications of physics.
Aaron knows his subject matter through and through. He tried to apply to material to usable applications so the material wasn't so foreign or too abstract.
clearly explains material and walks us through complex examples.
His strengths are +4 wisdom and +5 intelligence attributes. His attack and defense is quite lacking but he makes up for it in mag def and healing.
Aaron consistently exhibits his deep understanding of the course material (and beyond) which can deepen a student's confidence in the methods being demonstrated in class. Some instructors will spend class time going over material that could easily be obtained by skimming the textbook for literally a few minutes. These same instructors will use class time to "solve" the simplest of example problems that the book already provides and will expect students to understand how to solve all of the more complex problems based on a rehash of the material learned from the book (which does not demonstrate an understanding of material). Aaron will use class time to review the fundamental Physics concepts that will ultimately result in the students actually understanding the material instead of simply memorizing equations. Aaron will then provide example problems that may look similar to those in the text, however Aaron will solve the same problem using multiple methods and demonstrate why one method works better than another. Aaron will TEACH the basic concepts and methods and expects the students to learn the intermediate and advanced concepts, as opposed to expecting the students to figure out the basic concepts on their own and then struggle with the intermediate problems on the exam.
Aaron knows his stuff very well therefore he can relate to the topics very well. He also has was good at organizing the topics throughout the semester and prompting us what would and would not be on the test.
Good in explaining concepts.
Knowledge of subject - Aaron teaches course material without looking at notes Approachability - Aaron is very approachable and always helpful when students ask questions Informal - Aaron's style of teaching is very relaxed and informal. It is easy to raise concerns and ask questions without fear of being chastised for asking a dumb question like some teachers at Manoa
He's extremely knowledgeable on the subject and related subjects.
He know and can teach the material very well.
Aaron is very knowledgable in the subjects that he teaches and he is able to instruct the material in a way that is both organized and easy to understand.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Give homework.
Homework aside from saying "Do all the problems" just so there's a baseline gauge of what is important and what is irrelevant. Sort of frustrating when studying.
teach physics 272!
I would suggest assigning and collecting homework to his students.
I would suggest Aaron to maybe offer more group work such as quizzes or have more class participation.
Homework - It would be nice if Aaron would assign discrete homework problems. I sometimes felt lost as to what I should be studying.
No changes necessary.
Edit the use of the text book; I've never had to use the text book once while taking any of his classes, his lectures suffice.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Dr. Hanai demonstrates for his students at a place we can learn at.
He went over examples and thoroughly went through the examples to explain concepts.
absolutely
He educated us about what to expect as an engineering student and explained the minor details that are not commonly known.
Aaron offered us an extra credit opportunity towards the end of the semester giving us a little sense of relief on the final and not making it overwhelming. Also, on the class day before an exam, he would review any topic we didn't understand clearly.
replies to email really quick
Aaron showed concern for his students by not only providing his raw knowledge on the course subject, but also sharing his personal real-world applications and even going slightly outside of the course material to describe to students what the course material can be used for and what sorts of things they can expect as they move forward in their engineering education and careers.
If a handful of students did bad on a certain part of the exam he will address the whole class.
Aaron is very approachable and willing to answer questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, out of all the teachers he's lenient enough to where a student can at least grasp the material, but yet difficult enough to challenge the students
Yes, if you have time to do all of the problems in the book.
yes. though his material is more difficult, if you do not challenge yourself in the beginning, you will fail (like the other kids in class) when the harder material comes.
Yes, I would like more students to pursue an engineering degree and the way to the degree requires students to take Prof. Hanai.
When I first enrolled for the course, I heard rumors that I would fail the course because Aaron's tests are known for being extremely difficult and that his courses have a high failure rate. Aaron literally covers all of the necessary material in class, and simply attending all classes and taking notes is enough to earn a minimal passing grade. That being said, I would definitely recommend taking a course from Aaron if the student intends on going to class, I would recommend other instructors if the student's goal is to pass the course without coming to lectures.
Yes I would because you will really learn a lot and Aaron is very understandable. I can see he enjoys teaching KCC students and will gladly help anyone taking his class.
yes
Yes, definitely. As a student from UH Manoa, I took this class at KCC because of time constraints. I now wish that I had taken more of my pre-engineering courses at KCC, and Aaron's teaching plays a part in that wish.
Yes because Aaron helps students to think for themselves and in turn we become better sudents.
Yes I would, because I feel he's a valuable resource in one's education due to his ability to teach and make material comprehendable.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Good job.
aaron hanai needs to get paid more from KCC
Aaron is a very nice guy.
He's really good in explaining the concept of the material and he make sure you get it by giving a lot of examples.
Really appreciate what Aaron is doing at the community college. STEM courses are tough to teach, and tough to learn. Aaron does an excellent job at preparing students for engineering school.
He's da man.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He know's the subjects he teaches well.
He is a good source for knowledge and give good advice when an issue comes up. He understands a lot about engineering which helps us learn through his methods.
Very knowledgable.
As always, a great teacher.
great resource
He was extremely knowledgable and was always a great resource when we got stuck.
When a student is stuck or confused, he is able to quickly guide them in the right direction.
Smart guy, approachable.
Knowledgable in subjects that he teaches; approachable.
Aaron is an easy guy to talk to and you can ask him anything comfortably.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
N/A
Have all the groups do one outreach presentation.
For this class, I would suggest a more directed approach. While we were able to work on our own and think on our team, our team struggled through the whole process, namely because an individual always thought his way was better, but never bothered to pick up any work. Ultimately, one two people on our group did any work; the rest of them did as little as possible for input. I felt i learned nothing in this class, and have learned about working as a team better during work hours - where consequences of not performing means termination instead of just holding the rest of the team back.
minus the journal
Make the projects easier and not so overwhelming. The pixy cam project for me was almost unenjoyable at times because i had no idea what to do and had to watch online lectures on programing just to get an understanding of how things worked. Even now I still feel i was not well equipped to take on the task we were given. The class says no prerequisites but i felt useless at times because i hadn't taken a class in programming or knew anything about electronics.
Have the requirements for assignments available online.
Make money and materials easier to get, somehow.
None.
I would suggest Aaron to touch bases with every group especially the groups with a lot of ME and provide input and feedback for the project.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
A little concern, he expects a lot from his students to know what to do.
When we asked for additional micro controllers, he got them for us.
Asked questions about our project and helped coax problem solving.
always
he bought us like 5 megaramps boards after we broke all the sanguinololu ones (due to made in china quality control).
He was always available for questions.
Aaron gave reminders of assignments to students.
By helping...?
Accessible and easy to communicate with.
He kept us updated on things we needed to do.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes if you are able to do things on your own without assistance often.
Absolutely. He is one of a few engineering teachers that kcc has. They should consider expanding the engineering program at kcc.
Yes. Smart and well experienced. Enthusiastic about engineering and it shows.
always. best teacher i've had since phys170.
yes, he was a great mentor from the design, development, and to production
Yes he is a good teacher, i like how he goes through examples and lessons. Its very clear and done in a logical easy to understand order.
Yes, he is very knowledgeable and does his best to answer questions.
Yes, because he cool.
Yes, because he's the man.
Yes I would because he is nice and let us learn on our own but he was still there to help us.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Really fun teacher, did a lot of projects with him that were very interesting. Teaches in a way I like.
Not as tall as Carland.
KCC should pay him more
All around good guy
He is always has a positive attitude and is always happy to help.
He so fly, like bird.
He's a genius.
Aaron is a nice guy.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is to the point and teaches what we need to know for his tests.
Focusing on the method rather than the answer, and comprehending how to solve problems. He picks and chooses the important material in order to maximize the time learning and keep students attention by only presenting relevant information
He is very knowledgeable in this subject as well as others. He explains things in multiple was, ties various subject related topics into each other to make them more understandable.
Knew the material well. Good personality. The group quizzes I think is a brilliant idea. I really learned the most from those and because of those.
Aaron knows the subject content really well. He knows exactly what we need to know for going into the next level for physics.
he is a good professor, he have a wide idea about the course.
Promotes conceptual understanding vs. memorization. Offers interesting insights into real life application of concepts learned in class. Engineering/real life approach to the class: I really enjoyed this style of teaching because it was very understandable to me.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Outlines?
I had some trouble with the vectors
Goes off on tangents sometimes to unrelated topics as well as in depth explanations to things not related to the course. I suggest sticking to one topic at a time to cause less confusion.
I don't like that we basically only have 5 grades because if you mess one up its vary hard to fix it. There isn't the cushion of homework or other forms of grades to show other aspects of students abilities and participation in and out of class. If someone is a bad test taker it would be very difficult to succeed. The test I though were also too long for the short period of time we had for them.
I wish there was assignments based on his lectures rather than going into the book, because it would help comprehend better on what he is teaching.
Maybe more examples or more approaches to explaining vectors? I still am having trouble understanding them.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always available for help and questions
Aaron show's concern for his students by providing them with extra information that they could benefit from. For instance he mentioned certain types of internships or programs that will help the students.
He opens it up for us to ask him questions.
He is very active in developing programs and activities outside of this class for students and trying to help the educational system to be more supportive for students. You can tell he really cares about students and furthering the educational system.
He is always there for help for his office hours, and he always checks on us in class on how we are doing and if there is anything to be clarified for us.
Offering extra credit. Giving quizzes to promote good study habits. Working sample problems.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Sure, good basic physics class. Not as overwhelming as others.
yes, he's a good professor
Yes, he is nice, a good teacher, and is very understanding.
Overall I would. I would just warn them about the tests and grading system and encourage them to really step it up for his class.
I would recommend Aaron because he briefly covers the smaller things in chapters and emphasizes what we need to learn.
Yes. Because good things in life are worth working for. An understanding in physics is one of those things.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Very smart in his field.
I enjoyed the "extra information" during lectures, they helped me to connect the dots between concepts.

Good job!
I will say that I wasn't the best student for this class so maybe his tests were fair. I wasn't always able to keep up with the homework so I'm sure that to some degree enhanced my struggle with the tests.
I think the exams are a bit long. But, if you don't set a high initial standard, then you won't provide opportunity for growth. So I understand why they are long and difficult.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He gives the class opportunities to work on our experiments and write up reports in class and he is able to help the group if anything is not clear.
He has us complete the labs in a fashion that model how we would in the scientific community.
He is easy going and cares deeply for his students.
Very intelligent.
Readily explained further material that was unclear as far as setting up experiments, collecting data and writing the lab reports.
Knows his physics well.
Wealth of knowledge Approachable Tries to explain as simply as possible in "lay" terms
Very approachable, makes asking questions easy. MUCH better at explaining things one-on-one than to the class as a whole.
Accessible during class. Knows the material well.
Laid back approach. Promotes doing it yourself, but also offers explanation for more difficult parts as needed.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No changes to suggest.
None

None
Make some labs that actually involve hypothesizing.
None.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He didn't have to show concern for his students for Physics Lab because performing the experiments and writing our reports were easy to follow through.
he helped us
He would always be there in class to help answer questions
Asks them about their major, what he can do to help students get to their goals.
Always available to answer questions
Always available for questions and concerns.
Helped one-on-one.
Offering extra credit. Always taking time to talk to students about diverse subjects and interests.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend students to take PHYS 170L because it is not too stressful as taking regular Physics classes.
yes, he's a good professor
Yes, he is a good teacher and is more concerned with the students learning the material and comprehending it rather than just presenting the material

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
For an online class Aron did a pretty good job presenting the material in a way in which I understood. I like how he went over problems during class that we wanted to have explained
He was very straight-forward with every topic. He was very clear with all if his answers to our questions. He shows every single step to make sure that his students fully understand the concept.
Very knowledgable in his field and always willing to help.
His knowledge of the course.
Knowledge
super smart. very fair. very challenging
really smart dude and knows his stuff.
Mr. Hanai knew the subject extremely well and was able to explain it in a efficient way that was easy to understand. Despite the class lectures being solely online, Mr. Hanai was able to provide excellent online lectures that were I felt were BETTER than in-class lectures. They were jam-packed with information and thorough explanations.
Subject knowledge is immense. Very fair in grading.
The general knowledge and foundation of his engineering background made the subject more practical than plugging and chugging in numbers.
He knows what he is talking about. He teaches with a lot of confidence.
Very competent in the material. Gets straight to the point. Does a lot of examples (But doesn't finish). Very clear and concise when speaking.
Well organized, and very clear on how to approach problems
He really strived to help the students learn the subject rather than just getting a grade.
knowledge of subject area,
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none at this time
N/A
Adding audio to the saved blackboard link. A guide line of what questions to do for homework, so we may better prepare for exams. More extra credit assignments for students to accumulate points.
n/a
because this is a summer class its supposed to be a fast paced class therefore, I can't really think of any changes he should make
Assign homework if possible. I know this sounds sarcastic, but it'll help the students out a bit. Most universities don't actually assign homework, and base grades purely off of exam grades, but considering that this is a summer course, it'll help a lot if there were other avenues of grading. It might add on quite a bit of a workload. This is just a suggestion.
Umm, maybe go a little easier on some exams if that's possible.
He should post fully worked out solutions to some of the problems. Numbers and finished work. With the pace of the course it would have really helped to see completely worked problems. Should split the recordings better.
None. I think hes a good teacher. Personally, i just think the class is too hard to fully grasp the concepts of this course in 6 weeks. It should be offered only to students that need to re take it.
Do more completed problems so we can use them as guidelines. It helps to see them fully worked out so we get used to seeing and doing them that way. Sometimes I understand it in class and then I go back later and forget how we got to a certain step.
neater presentation of notes. handwriting/ drawings sometimes hard to read.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Answered our questions promptly
Responded promptly and assisted whenever possible.
Giving the students a chance to earn extra credit by doing this evaluation.
Addressing questions and acomidating schedules
he helped us with all questions and concerns that we had
He cared because he tells us what we supposed to study on
He was very prompt at answering questions when asked. He made sure to demonstrate the material with lots of examples.
If we had any questions, he gave enough time to answer them in terms of requests which were very helpful. We could see problems that other people were having and saw different ways to solve them which was interesting.
Should anyone have to leave early during the session he would have the pdf version on his website so they can view all the material they had missed.
After exams he would briefly tell us how the class did and after grading tell us to study more.
The floor was always open. Promptly responded to questions.
Gave us extra credit and answered all if not most of our questions
He's very caring and he constantly asks us what we want to see worked out and leaves plenty of room for questions. When someone expresses an issue he quickly responds and doesn't make us feel like any of our questions are stupid questions. It's a safe learning environment and he doesn't make us feel scared to ask for help which really makes a huge difference/impact on students.
provide extra credit opportunity, quick response to emails
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he seems to be an excellent professor, knows his stuff and is very good at explaining things
I would strongly recommend Aaron to other students..
Yes, most knowledgeable physics/math/engineering teacher on campus.
Yes, because of his knowledge of the course.
No, he is a good guy but it feels like you're learning on you're own. It might just be the subject matter.
yes. he is a very challenging teacher. passing his class, you will understand and be able to apply the material in class
sure
Yes, I would because Mr. Hanai is excellent at explaining difficult concepts.
Yes. One will definitely learn in his classes.
I think his class was very organized and fundamentally broken down enough to understand but also able to find the problems on their own. The class is good for independent learners and I think this form of medium allows you to interject during discussion without feeling judged - personally.
I would recommend Dr. Hanai to students that are only motivated and disciplined enough to handle their time wisely.
Yes because you will learn a lot but you also need to learn on your own or as a group. Also, he is a very nice person.
Yes, for all the strengths he has the was listed in previous box.
During the regular semesters definitely. Not for summer school, unless youre re taking for a better grade
I would definitely recommend him. Most teachers have very bad patience and compassion for students. It's difficult because as teachers, they teach the same topic every semester so they've mastered it very well. But when your a new student this is the first time you've encountered the topic so it takes some time. But teachers make us feel stupid and really stops us from wanting to excel and rather just hide in our shells/back of the classroom in fear we'd be shut down or made fun of. Aaron didn't do that. He really practiced and showed a lot of patience and understanding.
Yes if they have good foundation in physics... summer class is very accelerated
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
You are awesome
Great guy, took a few classes from him and have grown to enjoy his style of teaching. Fast paced and in-depth. If you want the most information possible, Aaron is the person to go to. Sometimes I think there's not enough time for all the info he has to share, he's that good. You can tell he cares about his students.
he is a funny guy
Cool dude
I think that the exams get kinda crazy sometimes, but I think that your grading is very fair. Thank you for that.
Wish I had him during the regular semester, feel I could really learn from him.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Aaron seems to care about students and has a good knowledge of the course content
He's a genius
because he knew this class well, he was able to teach it just as good
Excellent knowledge in all the subjects that he teaches.
use of the online software
Clear presentation
He is good at deriving equations. Writes legibly.
Clear and is pretty knowledgable in the material.
Good use of examples and lectures
would take every class with him. had him since phys170 and its been a great experience
He really tries to help us out as much as he can via the WEB. He posts all materials on his webpage including recordings of his lectures which I used a lot!!
He knows this course very well.
The most obvious strength is extreme knowledge of the subject matter. He can explain any question you have for him in a multitude of ways and will give you the most in depth answer you can handle.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Handwriting and drawing could be improved
Possibly making short lecture videos and having students watch them on their own time so during class there is more time for examples
none
This session needs to be longer then 6 weeks, it would've been better if it was longer like 10-12 weeks would've been more reasonable.
none
Please do more example problems and finish it. He seems to start a problem then try to explain how to derive it and not give a final solution.
Go over examples is more detail. Step-by-step. review for final.
Try and sound a little more excited and engaging. To be honest, your voice is so soothing and I if I didn't have espresso, I would fall asleep through the whole class and would have to go back and look at the lecture after it was posted.
I think it's not really good idea for me to take this in summer because it's crazy hard, although I love our teacher , he is a very good teacher for this course.
More examples would be helpful, but this class moved very fast in the summer session so that may be difficult.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Extra credit opportunities and opportunities to ask questions
he tried to make sure he used the simplest steps to solving problems
was available and accessible
I don't know.
In my situation, I asked him if he could out weigh my final exam score and he did. I was happy that he would make the exception for me.
Ask for student questions.
I was a long distance student and he made sure I had all my exams sent to the proctor on time.
I think his concern was apparent in his preparation, promptness and thoroughness in answering questions and the speed at which he replied to many emails from myself alone.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes if they have a strong grip on physics and CE 270
I already have. His courses are to the point.
yes
Yes, his exams forces students to study and do practice problems on your own time for that subject to become more efficient in time management when it comes to the exam, since you have to know everything proficiently to finish within the allotted time.
yes, he's a good teacher, he answers questions, and makes things clear.
yes
Neutral. He was okay. But not bad.
Yes I would because he is understands what students don't understand.
Yes. However I would recommend that students take this class in the school year (not accelerated) and in-class (not virtual).
Yeah. He did his job well and seemed to care about us learning the material.
Yes
Absolutely. And I have. He is an excellent professor.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Hope you have a good summer
n/a
Good instructor.
..
I learned a lot within 6 weeks span.
Thanks for teaching!!
Please don't go back to Engineering even though I'm sure you could make ten times as much money. We really need good professors.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is enthusiastic in his field.
Knowledgeable and easily accessible.
He knows the material extremely well
Major strengths include knowledge of material.
He's understanding, grades fairly, and knows the subject matter very well.
He knows the subject well and can offer mathematical proof of concepts.
His knowledge, which leads to clear understandable instructions and lecture. Also very personable, easy to communicate with.
The course material is presented in a clear manner. Never once did he ever show any judgement toward a question as if it was absurd or elementary. His online lectures were clearly written so that they could be accessed in the future for review.
knows his stuff
knowledge of material as well as simplifying even the hardest of material
He is good with the online classroom software. Plus he makes it clear what he will be testing on.
knowledge of the subject and the ability to present material in an easy to understand format.
He is very smart and knows his subject well
Clear , very efficient, he knows the subject very well, using recorder for the class makes it easier to review and study.
Showing step by step how to solve problem was helpful.
The class's was well put together. Materials and resources well easily access and useful.
He knows his subject and knows how to use up all of his class time without going over.
Clearly knew the subject matter.
Knows his material
Aaron explained material very well.
Mastery of the course and how to effectively demonstrate and condense the important information to students.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None that come to mind
My only recommended change would be to assign homework problems that are relevant to what will be covered on the exam. With the current system, it's almost like a guessing game as to what types of problems will be covered on exams. Maybe more practice exams in the future to better help students to prepare.
I think online quizzes would have been helpful during the week or before exams. The exams were too apart, in terms of dates, and the content from the beginning were hard to retain to the end. I would have rather had multiple exams that were close together because of the waiting period.
I feel the tests are too long for a 90 minute test period. With a high end calculator that can solve systems of equations, matrices, etc then yea it is reasonable but with a basic calculator the test takes too much time.
Explaining the material more clearly.
I liked the class, no need for changes.
none
Although the concepts were clearly presented in the lectures, he rarely worked problems all the way through. Although this is an effective method to save time to go over more things. It would be nice to see him work all the math associated with the problem sometimes. Example: he would work a problem until there were 3 equations and 3 unknowns, and then leave it at that. Although all of us have been through enough math classes where we should know how to resolve a problem at this point. It would be nice to see him work it all the way through sometimes.
...plus session in person for online course...
A little homework to buffer the fact that each test is 25% of the grade.
I cant think of any..
He should encourage participation during lectures and maybe make the class a hybrid. Like one class online one class face to face.
Assigning less problems to do More time for exam
Practice exams could be helpful
A few assigned problems from the book to mainly focus on.
The test problems with tedious and ugly integrals seemed unnecessary. Those problems eat into time that could have gone to showing knowledge of the material and reflect negatively on students' grades.
Try to be a little more engaging. Lessons were often boring and unenthusiastic...
None
It is great just the way it is.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Open to questions if there are any.
He posted a practice exam that allowed students to get a better grasp of what was being covered on the exam.
Offering the slight extra credit for these evaluations is one way
Would give pointers on certain sections.
He is approachable and if i have a question i could go to him for explanation.
going over and over the concepts to make sure it was clear enough
His door was always open
Approachable even though it wasn't his office hours and he was in a rush.
He repeatedly asked if anyone had questions and answered questions thoroughly and immediately.
He answered every question students had with the subject and he was available outside of class
Recording his classes and uploading it once we finish and uploading a pdf version as well shows how mush he is trying to help us.
Hey sent emails to students and at the start of each class reviewed any subjects or gave any announcements.
He would answer all questions that popped up in class and make sure we understood before moving on.
Did allow for taking the exam the entire day that the testing center was open which is nice.
By making himself available at all times
Aaron showed concern for students by giving us a practice exam to work on before exam to help us prepare for midterms. He answered everybody question.
Lets students utilize the testing center with a long window. Moves the harder material before the drop date so students won't be stuck with a bad grade beyond the drop date.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. They will enjoy the experience of online classes.
I would recommend Aaron's class to other students because it is the most convenient one on offer.
I would recommend Hanai as a teacher, but warn people that the material is very involved and that you need to understand the material extremely well to get passing grades on the exams
Yes, but you must work very hard for the grade that you want.
Yes! He's a great teacher and cares about his students.
most definitely
yes. the Course material is presented in a systematic way that is easy to understand
yes. great teacher and learned alot
Yes, he knows how to teach online better than anyone else I've taken an online class from.
Absolutely, and I have. He is an amazing professor.
Yes
Of course. The online class system was really good.
Yes, grades fairly and knowledgable on course
Yes very well organized.
I would recommend his class because it is convenient and cheaper in both gas and tuition, but I would warn them how easy it is to mess up since the course is all test based.
Probably not. While he did in fact know his topic, his method of communicating those ideas was very dull...
Yes good teacher that knows his material
Yes. Aaron is a great professor he is very clear and concise on his lectures. He also helps out if you are having difficulties
Yes. Fair grading, and as long as you pay attention and attend lecture, you should pass.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He should continue teaching in this way.
Good teacher, although I do wish that the recorded lecture portion was a little more organized, but to the best of my knowledge, that is out of his control.
Good teacher, but sometimes has a hard times "dumbing things down" and explaining in a way that's easy to understand for those who may not have strong math or physics backgrounds.
In the near future, please show more concern for students learning. Especially when explaining new material. Thank you.
Great teacher and wants all his students to succeed.
A if professors got graded
He's nice?
I think he goes WAY beyond what is expected.
I liked the practice exam, I think it helped a lot with time management and getting a feel of what the exam is going to be like.
None
I think he has a bird.

18. Other comments:
None worth mentioning.
Students should be wary of all courses(like this one) that do not give assigned homework and are online lectures where attendance is not required; If the student is not motivated or organized, it can be very easy to find yourself lost and left behind. Success in this type of class will be up to the student to stay on task.
None.
The overall class and teaching was great, but the only thing that I personally didn't like was that the course was only offered online.
Awesome teacher.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Aaron loves the subject that he teaches and I can see why he is an engineer professor.
Knows the subject matter well and presents the information in different ways to help clarify the material.
He is very knowledgable about the subject. Doesn't need notes. Just knows the material very well. He is able to solve any question.
Teaches straightforward and lets students know exactly what to focus on
Understands the subject well.
he knows the material very well and can explain it clearly and concisely.
Easy to understand.
He knows the subject better than anyone I know.
Knew the material, fair exams and fair grader
His knowledge of the subject
He knows the subject he is teaching very well.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The only changes I would suggest is to write larger on the board. It may not be much but it helps to see a larger visual.
Look at the book and suggest problems that are related to the class.
This class could be offered as an online course like CE270.
Nothing besides, be more clearer on test questions
Maybe add homework as part of the grade.
none
Nothing, he is a really good teacher.
Do more practice problems from the book, assign extra credit homework problems
Have more examples ready and on-hand for classes
More organized lectures
He needs to have examples that are concrete, instead of making up examples then changing them mid-way through the problem. Teaching conceptually is a good method, but many students learn best by seeing actual examples worked out with actual values. Changing examples mid-way through a problem often confuses people and makes taking accurate notes almost impossible. In addition he would assume that the people in the class knew of the concepts he glazed over at times. Not everyone in the class has taken physics or statics at KCC... my experience has been that the different teachers teach some concepts differently, and to assume we know what he is doing (while blazing through things) is a bit much. Posting solutions to some practice solutions would also be a good idea if he does not finish a complete problem in class. With no homework due or quizzes, sometimes we have no way of knowing if what we are doing is correct, and it also wastes a lot of time figuring things out if we get an answer to a problem that is "close".
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He always ask questions and makes sure that no one was confused.
He listened to students and provided additional problems and help for the entire class based on the opinions of the majority of students.
Asking if we understand the material before we moved on
Answer questions that students asked.
he returned the tests back promptly and was always willing / available to answer questions
He would give us enough time to study for our exams so we were prepared for them.
He takes questions about the course.
Sure, always answered questions
He constantly asked if we understood material
He graded exams fairly
Accommodated the students for exam conflicts
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he knows what he is talking about and knows his subject well. Makes it a easy learning experience.
I would recommend his class to others because of the comfortable learning atmosphere and his ability to teach students with different ways of learning the same material
Yes, cause if you learn by the book and like to be taught straightforward he is great.
Yes, understands the subject well.
yes, he is a good teacher, fair and very informative, he really tries to help students further learning and goals.
Yes, I would.
Yes, he is one of the good ones.
Sure, but be prepared to study before the lectures to make sure you keep up with him in class
Yes because he is a good teacher
Yes if the student had Physics 170 and CE 270 with him... no if they did not. His teaching style is something that was hard for me to get used to coming from UH Manoa, but if you are able to fully understand his teaching method, it will help in the long run. I have no doubt that Mr. Hanai knows what he is talking about, but it is very hard to keep up with him as we are trying to learn the material.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
If I could make another change, it would be the sections of the chapter is would teach. He'd sometimes jump around, and it does get a little confusing and I can't quite follow with the book. Other than that, he is a great professor.
Keep teaching!
Nothing.
Keep doing what you're doing.
Nice guy
He's very intelligent

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Class was organized and he knew the subject!
Really Smart Nice and Approachable
Explaining material in an easy and simple manner
For this class, he mentors on the subjects that are most common in the Electrical Engineering field.
Knowledge of material, knew how to break down problems well, made analogies to mechanical systems.
He knows the subject and can give his own experiences to relate to the subject.
Easy to learn and comprehend.
He knows the engineering disciplines and mathematical analysis so well that he can integrate the disciplines and communicate analogies, both in symbolic representation and real-world applications. He is the brightest and most enthusiastic teacher and KCC is lucky to have him as a professor. He is also quite humble, not in aptitude, but able to show a lot of humility and never boasts of his abilities at the expense of others' self-esteem. A pleasure to learn from and with him!
Able to present material in very clear and approachable manner. Very friendly and always accessible for help. Great teacher, cannot recommend highly enough.
because he knew his material well, when we asked questions, he knew how to answer them in a well manner
He's very pragmatic with his method of teaching. In a sense, Aaron made multiple examples of how we would experience these situations as an engineer. He's also VERY proficient in math and physics which makes this course tie in well with the other complementary classes.
intelligence
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Create more practice problems to study for exams
Not much. His style of teaching is much different than other professors. Although, he could go beyong the scope of the class at times. We will probably run into similar problems in the future.
More background on some labs with simple instructions on how circuit board works and connections.
More applications.
Nothing, this class was taught very well.
none
Speak louder. Shout if you need to.
write bigger
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Gave practice quizzes before exams.
Adjusting the lab days so that midterms would be given more time to complete
He responds to anyone if there was a confusion. He was very informative most of the time.
Pace was relaxed and slower, tests were taken during lab time, practice quizzes were helpful, grades quickly and fairly, easy to follow guidelines on labs.
By being available for questions and concerns.
Gave us more time to study for exams.
He always listens and encourages students in a positive manner.
he would come around for help if needed during the lab
On one of the tests, Dr. Hanai apologized to the class saying that he was a bit biased in his way of teaching the students the mesh current method. He regrets telling the students that the mesh current method is imaginary (which is also indicated within the text). He felt that the students would disregard this method completely because both the instructor and text indicate that this method isn't based on any type of law; therefore, students won't use for an exam. In the end, the grading for one of the tests wasn't graded as harshly.
Very helpful with questions
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, you can learn a lot!
Yes, the class is enjoyable and easy to understand
For EE211, I would recommend taking this course. If you know what you are doing and know the whole concept, he will give you a good grade even if you get the answer wrong.
Yes he makes engineering classes easier to understand.
Yes, he's a great teacher. Not all teachers are open to questions. Always available during office hours.
Yes, because he is a good teacher to prep us for transferring to a 4 year college.
Yes, please take Aaron Hanai for any of his engineering disciplines. And if you like interaction, don't take his online courses... take them with him in person, even if it's a repeated course because you'll get the attention and support you need!
Absolutely, great teacher!
yes because he is an awesome teacher
Yes, I would recommend him to other students. He has shown patience with everyone regardless how far behind the student is, concerning math or physics. He will take the time and write out each step for the bewildered student.
Yes,
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Good teacher
Nothing else.
Give him credit for teaching that many classes at once.
Great teacher, keep up the good work.
Keep doing what you're doing!
no
The last I heard Engineers get paid more than teachers? Why are you doing this?
18. Other comments:
The class could use a bigger whiteboard/chalkboard. It was a little tough keeping track of the notes on the board at times.
The super man of engineering.
Love the teaching style, teaches concepts and essentials then up to student to do problems. This method encourages students to think for themselves and also self motivate.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Great explanation of material.
Mr. Hanai is a brilliant teacher. He understands the material and more importantly how to get us to an understanding. His teaching method is logical and adaptive. The progression of material delivery does not overwhelm, but rather methodically lays down layers upon which to build. Most important to me his how he explains the proof of concepts and outlines an effective train of thought when dealing with new concepts. I can see comparisons to his teaching method with the cut and fill method of stabilizing foundations/structures.
Aaron has great knowledge in the subject that he's teaching but I feel as if the course could be a little more organized.
The concepts in physics may be difficult to understand at times. Aaron Hanai was very knowledgable about the subject and able to explain things in a way that was both interesting and easy to understand.
good lecture, and helpful when asked specific questions, also very responsive to emails.
He is a genius! He knows the subject that he's teaching well. He also have a better way of explaining Physics concepts that are normally hard to understand in the book. His notes are pretty self-sufficient too, which I really like. I just have to copy whatever it is that he's writing on the board and when I look at it at home, I could understand them instantly. Another thing that I really like about him too is that even if you got the answer wrong but your solutions are correct, he would give you the full credit. I like it how he believes that exams are there to let us show if we understood the topic or not, and not to get a perfect score. He is also very down-to-earth. For a Physics genius of his caliber, he is not the bragging type and he does not look down on you if you don't understand something. He is very accommodating, which I really like about him.
Aaron knows the subject very well. He also gives a lot of insight as to what to expect in the future courses in engineering and physics as well as encouraging us to seek higher degrees than just a bachelors.
he is compassionate and tries his best to help his students out in any way possible. he is also brilliant beyond any measurable standard.
Extremely knowledgable Approachable Fair Grades based on thought process. Wants to know if you really "get it". Passionate about subject
A ridiculous amount of subject knowledge. This guy could be a lead engineer for NASA.
He is a very knowledgable person in his field and is able to answer most of the questions his students have. He also gives his students a very strong base in Physics by emphasizing in how things are derived and how they work. He allows us to solve the big picture of the problem rather than getting to deep in one problem.
Very educated in his area and understands its real world applications and links to other subjects.
Explains concepts well
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
More interactive with students.
Mr. Hanai's demeanor welcomes questions and comments from the students which is great to gauge student understanding but sometimes the excitement of having new tools with which to analyze our world leads us students to pose questions that are connected and may give us better understanding but may also take a lot of class time. Maybe he could have a digital version of the notes included in an outline format available pre class so that we can have a guide to go through during class or for homework then have allotted time to discuss and make relevant connections.
He should create a schedule of the semester so his students know what to expect.
Maybe more quizzes as practice for the midterms.
Come to class prepared. Try to teach concepts instead of just demonstrating them. Have examples you plan on doing prepared beforehand. WRITE BIGGER, WE CANNOT SEE. When a student asks a question, actually answer it.
assign homework, it helps better instill concepts gone over in lecture.
I strongly sugggest that he louden his voice a bit because his voice is too soft and it's pretty hard to hear him speak, especially if you're sitting at the back. I also suggest that he speak in a more lively tone to get the students fired up. At first, the audibility of his voice and how he delivers his discussions make me sleepy in class (I have work, and I sleep very late because I have to work and study at the same time) even though I'm trying my best to keep my eyes open, and I hated attending his class just because it makes me sleepy. But when I got home and reviewed my notes, I realized he is a genius! He has a good way of explaining Physics concepts and he is able to let you see Physics in a different angle/light. You just need to hear him speak clearer. Eventually I got the knack of it and got used to his voice and the way he delivers his explanations. But really, I think Hanai is an excellent Physics professor! The only thing that I suggest for him would be to find a way to make his voice more audible and livelier. If he could overcome his shyness (this is how I interpret his soft voice and bashful tone), he would definitely be a sensation!
I wish that there were assigned homework problems so that it was clear on what we should be learning and/or studying for quizzes/exams, instead of us as students just going through the whole problem section. or at least give us an idea of types of problems to work on.
none. keep being awesome
Try to stay more on topic in class. Include more steps when solving problems in class. Sometimes it was unclear and hard to follow when reviewing notes at home
I suggest to Aaron that if possible help his students follow along with him during class by starting off introducing the chapter and what we will be mainly covering that day. Also, class participation would be good during examples being done in class.

No Changes
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Mr. Hanai provided extra credit opportunities, heard everyone's voice, discusses career goals and opportunities to keep in mind, and provided PLUS sessions.
If we asked questions, he would take his time to answer them.
Whenever I was confused about something, he was very willing to explain it to me.
extra credit
I didn't really feel his concern, but I would interpret his grading us fairly and giving us back our exams promptly as his own way of showing his concern for us. Also, one time when I went to him for consultation, he was so down-to-earth, and he gladly answered my questions, which I really appreciated.
Aaron was always there via office hours and whenever you seen him around campus.
this semester my mother broke her ankle, i was involved in a major car accident, and my girl friend had an abortion and left me. Mr. Hanai was more than accomodating and understanding throughout the semester, unlike Don Voyce, who's CHEM162 class i was in that i had to take a W, wasting both my money and time.
Always asked if we understood Always took ample time to answer all questions Easily available for contact
He warned us from the beginning that it was going to be a difficult class. Throughout the semester he asked and made sure if we were okay with the topic we just covered. If not he would review and go over more examples.
Helps outside of class and very approachable. Goes out of his way to help students that aren't even his own in projects and class work.
He makes himself available to all students for questions
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, because he is a great professor. He explains the materials and breaks it down to the most simple term so that everyone can understand. He answers any questions that students have and responds in a respectful manner.
Yes. See above.
Yes because he is very knowledgable
Yes I would, because he explains in a way that is easy to understand. He does not get side tracked like some teacher; every lecture is full of explanation and important learning material from beginning to end.
yes, good teacher, very sharp, really knows his stuff
That depends. If they want a livelier teacher, then probably not. But if they want to learn Physics concepts in a more understandable way and if they can tolerate his voice, then Hanai is for them because they would definitely learn A LOT from him! I'll also tell them that his grading is pretty fair too. In fact, his grading is a little bit on the lenient side, but still really fair, so that would be a plus.
I would recommend his course to others who are or need to take physics.
absolutely. he is a great teacher, almost too smart for his position.
Yes, because he is extremely knowledgable. His teaching style takes some getting used to, though. He solves problems in class very quickly and with few steps written down, which can leave some people (like me) confused.
Yes. Grades fairly and really knows his stuff.
Yes I would recommend him. In order for students to really know what Physics is about you must be able to see the broad picture of it all. Aaron is good at teaching the derivations of things and how to solve them problems generically. His tests reflect what he taught in class and is graded very fairly.
Yes, you will know your subject very well upon completing his course and will feel confident in trusting him in his instruction.
Yes. Very good teacher
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
.Aaron Hanai is a genius
Great guy, need more teachers like him. Seems to have many interests, a well rounded person. Deserves compensation for his extra effort.
He has potential to be a very great professor but he needs to organize his course a little more.
I wish you taught some of my other classes, thanks for the good semester I learned a lot.
A really great Physics teacher! He has my highest regard and respect for being so down-to-earth and at the same time a Physics genius! It has been a pleasure having him as my Physics professor this semester! He is a great asset to KCC. I wish him the best in his future endeavors! Keep up the great work!

Thank you, for not scaring me out of engineering lol
Amazing.
If you could give out more group quizzes that would really help because they were really useful in helping us understand things that some of us didn't get where as other understood them easily.
Really good guy, took a class from him before and didn't really pay attention. After attending his class for a following semester, noticed that he adapted to his students needs and is actually very helpful and caring. Teaches because he is passionate about teaching and will help whenever available.

The extra credit you offered is really great, just wished I took advantage of them. You should also find a way to encourage more people in class to form study groups outside of class with people who have taken the course before. They were really beneficial because we did that this semester.
Good job Aaron!

Strong subject knowledge.
Mr. Hanai give students freedom to use all materials in the classroom, and let students design how to do lab activities.
He knows a lot about his subject
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The labs are kind of simply. I think students may want to do harder labs.
No changes for his physics lab class
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
When students have problems on the Labs, Mr. Hanai will help the students, and tell them which steps are wrong.
He made sure our lab reports were completed so we could get the most credit
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Made lab fun, which is rare for labs.
Yes, This class is fun and students can learn how to design a lab by themselves.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows the subject well.
Well knowledgable about engineering material.
He teaches straight forward and keeps it simple for easier understanding.
Aaron really know his stuff. The time he took to derive the equations made a world of difference to understanding the course material.
Very organized and can explain any question you ask.
His knowledge of the subject.
His knowledge of the subject he teaches
He really knew what he was talking about when he taught this subject.
Really knows what he is talking about
Enjoys teaching and that excitement is conveyed through his lessons
Helpful during the class session.
Clear on explanations, great teacher
He clearly knows the subject matter well. He can relate concepts to applications.
He knew the material very well.
He really knows what he's doing and always shows us an easier way to solve problems
His knowledge of the subject.
Very knowledgeable. Able to maintain balance between overall goals and important details while explaining problems.
Aaron understands his subject material well.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I just wouldn't take this class online.
Take time to show how to do some problems. He expects a lot from his students and that high expectation is why lot of people are struggling in his class.
Be more explanatory on what will be on the test and what specific problems we should practice for. There is too many problems on the txt to know what problems he would be specifically testing us on. For example, when you explain the problems, make sure you let the students know that there will probably be three parts to each question and you can let them know or give hints because problems on the TXT ask for different and more simple answers than what he asks. Sometimes stuff we never went over.
Mandatory assigned homework problems.
Increase time limit for exams.
Assign homework to collect for grading.
more example homework
Maybe you should start trying to make students do problems. That way you get more involvement in the class. People will have to participate more and it would probably help the other students who don't get it to understand it a little better with it being taught in different ways.
more office hours
Finish problems.
None
I would suggest Aaron to encourage asking questions and further student involvement in learning. This being an online class, I know it is different than being in person. Mainly, Aaron, probably unconsciously, keeps the focus of attention on himself and how easy it is for him, without it seems, much consideration that it may be more difficult for others.
More examples from problems. Less examples using the examples.
None.
Because Aaron understands his subject material so well, I don't think he understands how difficult it is for students who are struggling. The exams were very difficult and we were under-prepared for them. Had we done more actual problem material instead of everything completely in theory, I think we would have been better prepared. I need goals, so instead of saying do every other even problem as a minimum, I would have had liked specific problems picked out from each chapter and had it be more like do these specific problems per chapter.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Not sure.
Not sure it seemed like he was going to fast most of the time.
He always asked us if we understood the examples before moving on.
no comment
Let us know how we did as a whole class. Always asked if we had questions.
Answered all questions asked during class.
Asking if there are any questions in class
He would try to give people incentives to do better on the exam which helps because everyone wants that extra push :)
gave feedback promptly
Always available to students through e-mail and office hours.
Asked if we had questions during class session.
Yes, he offers extracredit
He did ask if students understood the material. But while asking the questions somewhat minimized it.
He gave alot of warning of when the test would be and the chapters it would cover.
Always willing to take requests for practice problems in the book.
Aaron is engaged as a professor and he does care about his students. I just think he needs more back ground as a teacher and to learn how tough this material is for some students. If he never struggled in school with material like this it is almost impossible for him to empathize with a student who does. This all translates into your teaching approach.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Sure if they're up to the challenge.
Yes and no. He is a good teacher but really hard and challenging.
Yes, because this course is straight forward and thats how he teaches so it is simple on what the course objectives were.
Yes
Yes, if you learn quickly and are disciplined.
Yes, he understands subject well.
Yes. He knows the subject in and out, and he can explain it well
yes I would because he is a really good teacher. He knows what he is talking about and if youre really having trouble, all you have to do is ask him.
yes because he offer a lot of knowledge
Yes. Fun teacher, knows his material
Yes, seems like a pretty cool teacher.
Yes
I would recommend Aaron to students who already know the subject material they are to learn from Aaron fairly well, or who will be able to pick it up fairly quickly. If the student is a bit slower to learn new concepts especially in math or science, I would recommend someone else.
yes
Yes, he is a good teacher who has a high level of knowledge.
Yes. Difficult material, but very knowledgeable and fair.
I have talked to other students who are taking this class at UH and they all tell me it is very easy, as opposed to the difficulty were having in Aaron's class. I don't think it's fair to not have an even curriculum across the board. I would say no and encourage students to take this class with an easier professor somewhere else. I was warned prior to taking this class. I have no choice though, because I have no money for UH.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Nothing.
Smart guy. Actually really smart guy. I just have a hard time keeping up with the fast pace of his course.
Keep teaching this course, but be more specific and give more detail on what problems future students should study for.
Nothing.

KCC is very fortunate to have him as an instructor.
Aaron is a very nice guy, all the way around. Very humble, very knowlegable about his subject material. His only draw back is not understanding how difficult this material is for his students. We are seeing this material for the first time and even if we took phys 170, like this last time that was at least 3 months ago, we are not going to have the freshest minds on the subject. If the material could be broken down a little more, with more time spent less on theory and more on actual problems, I think that would help.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Continued to improve every semester extremely knowledgeable and able to convey information effectivily
His knowledge of the subject matter. His easygoing approach to the subject.
Knows the subject and can explain things in many ways not just one.
knowledgeable, teaches useful methods that are not in the text
Knowledge of the material, breaking down problems into steps, is clear on exam material.
Very knowledgable in subject matter.
He is very intelligent and teaches in a very tedious mathematical way
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
None
a little less review at the beginning of each class
Make a plan, sometimes it felt like it was a repeat of the past class.
If testing situation is fixed, make this class online like statics. No need to come to school and recordings of notes/lectures for review. Post exam formula sheets so students know what needs to be derived, what will be given, what needs to be memorized etc.
Assign problems related to test to prepare students for exams
To dumb the class down, I have taken the course before and this was the first time I have been exposed to the concepts in such a mathematical way. The ways I have been taught before was much more understandable, some of the maths used was beyond the 200 level.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He was always available outside of class, and he knew what other classes and projects students had, and would try to relate the discussions to those things.
Helps with question outside of class even not during office hours.
extra credit on tests / time to review problems in class before the test
Clarifies questions, breaks problems down into steps gives a good idea of what problems will be on exams and relevant types of problems and formulas to study.
Very open to questions and patient in answering
He was tedious in his process.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Definitely, because he gets difficult material across to his students in a friendly way that makes it less intimidating.
Definitely. Great instructor, knows his subjects, and easy to understand.
Yes. One learns a lot in Prof. Hanai's class. Also, Prof Hanai foreshadows and informs on what is to come in later classes at UHM.
Yes one of the better professors in engineering.
Yes, informational and great for students who work in the morning as his courses are late noon.
Only if they were very comfortable with abstract mathematics. I have taken this course at Manoa, and it was a shock because Manoa uses a more physical understanding but Hanai teaches with a far more mathematical way.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Even answers questions that don't concern the topics of class.
Great teacher.
Great teacher. A real students professor.
Be more conceptual and don't jump straight into a high level mathematical definition for simple concepts.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
A clear plan for the day, sometimes I feel like he would repeat things from last class that was not needed and could have spent time on other things.
Maybe write a mid-semester report so the final report will be easier.
curriculum kind of unsure, but doesnt matter b/c i think it's supposed to be like that; different for every student.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He was always there for help.
He would help when we have problems. Cared about our projects and progression. He was also very encouraging when I didn't know what to do.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Aaron knows his material really well and knows the subject.
His vast knowledge in the subject.
Extremely knowledgable in the subject
Prof. Hanai know's his subject. He can write out proofs for almost everything off the top of his head. He shows us the long way and the short way to solve formula's. He's got personal experience as a physics major and engineer that he share when asked. Great teacher. He also care about his students.
Physic
he knew his stuff
Really smart, very clear instruction.
He knows the material well and can explain it well when he teaches it.
He has very good knowledge about the subject.
He's very patient and helpful during and outside of class. He also raises the expectation bar at reasonable increments.
Aaron is very thorough for each lesson.
He knows his material very well and knows how to assist students, Hes never late or absent for class so i know that hes serious about his teaching.
He is really, really smart and knows his stuff when it comes to Physics.
Very thorough on his lectures.
Aaron is extremely smart and knows the subject matter very well. He is knowledgeable and knows what he is doing.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
A little slower explainations
I wish he would give problems and material to study outside of class. I know there's the textbook, but if he could make suggestions to problems in the book that would be good to look at it and sections to carefully look over that would make it easier to study outside of class.
Physics can be a dry course. I thought that there wasn't enough discussion about real world application in class. However is you talk to him outside of class he is very open to helping you out and also discusses applications.
I suggest that he might organize his lectures
great teacher
Better communication with class as to where they are, what they are struggling with, etc.
Please, speak louder. Much louder. Not shouting. But louder. It was frequently hard to hear you from the front row. Not a good mix with this material.
Go slower, sometimes you can get lost because you go so fast.
Have a course curriculum written out already instead of him trying to remember what he taught from the last class and going off of memory.
Pass out five to ten made up problems every few weeks or so and then post the answer key at some later point.
none
Only thing i would change is for him to be more easier to find on campus
Write bigger.
Aaron goes through lectures a little to fast. If you could slow it down that would be great.
WRITE SLOWER. He continually writes extremely fast and changes things before students have a chance to write things out. Try dumbing down everything even more. Aaron generally assumes that everyone will understand what he is saying, however, this is a new subject and very hard to understand. Go slow and make sure students know what is going on before assuming that everyone understands.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He helped students on his time. He would also pop in on PLUS sessions to see how his students are doing.
Answered all questions
He would always take the time to explain something that somebody didn't understand.
He makes sure we know what to expect on a test. He always gives us quizzes before exams. The quizzes a great representations for the exams. He also looks at student statistics for success and failure and adapts his syllabus to fit the student. A few times this semester we needed more time to work on the subject matter and he moved test back. I found this very beneficial. By the time the test came around, I was ready. Sometimes things move so quickly in a semester that after the chapter test you don't have a chance to accumulate it into the following chapters. But because we really get to know one subject I felt that it was engrained throughout.
yes he did
Offered extra credit, moved exam dates for student convenience.
He lets us know of outside tutoring if we need help. He also lets us talk to him if needed.
He's very approachable in and out side of class. He also sits in on some of the plus sessions for extra help.
He helps students study after class
He always answers students questions.
He would answer any questions and would always be available to talk to in his office hours if you needed any help.
Aaron shows concern by trying to make himself available to students who needed help.
Answered the questions asked in class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes I would because he's a good professor and knows Physics very well to make a student be prepared for upper Physics.
yes, although he is tough and goes through fast, he's fair and very knowledgable and available for extra help if needed.
Yes, but only if they are prepared to take their education seriously and understand that a lot of the success of this class is based on how much studying you do outside of class.
Yes. He's a good teacher, great syllabus and you will learn a lot.
yes
Yes. Very happy with his class and teaching style. Also suspect he may be a cyborg.
Yes, because he is a good teacher and know his subject well.
No not really, he teaches the solving of the problem continuously, but not how to get the problem or why he used specific formulas or equations. He doesn't really emphasize that problems should be solved in pieces, which confuses a lot of people.
I would recommend him. He not only teaches the material, he teaches a better way to solve problems and shows all the proof behind the equations.
no because he often uses the same notation for different things and it gets confusing.
I would reccomend him because his course plan out is simple and organize so its easy to see what you missed or whats going to happen in the next few weeks ahead.
Yes because his knowledge of physics is ridiculously huge and he can answer your questions easily.
Yes because Aaron is a great teacher and always does his best to help a student understand the material better.
yes. he helps you think of it conceptually and you don't have to take so much time to doing the homework.
It depends. Aaron teaches very fast and it is very difficult to understand. My learning methods didn't match up with Aaron's teaching methods so I myself wouldn't take this class from him again. However, there are students in the class that do understand what is going on.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
His in-depth knowledge of physics has inspired me to want to learn more about physics.
Great teacher, great person.
he give us a lot of surprising quizzes and exams
Good teacher, would recommend.
He is a good teacher.
If Hanai could teach physics as if he is teached it to a little kid, and dumb down the material that can make sense for students there would be more people passing his class. He shows solving the math portions well, but not the reasoning behind why he used certain equations or formulas in the problem. In addition, when he shows the proof he writes it fast, but doesn't really explain why he cancels stuff out and if he does then he usually erases what he wrote anyway making it difficult to comprehend the notes on his class.
Hes a great instructor and knows his students very well. His teaching what he knows and hes excellent in doing that.
Maybe try assigning homework problems so students get more practice in.

Aaron is very knowledgeable on the subject matter and knows what he is talking about.
he explains stuff breaking down to the thing easy to understand
Knows his criteria and well aware of what happens.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no change
Allow bigger physics groups, maybe four people maximum. It was a lot of work for two people to turn in the entire lab themselves.
he should be in the lab entire class.
Be able to find you more often in campus. Also have more examples for a better learning experience.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
yes he did
He's always around to ask questions.
Answered questions and showed students how to do the labs.
hes always free to ask questions
He always answered students questions to help encourage them in class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes
Yes I would recommend him. The labs are straight forward but he's around for help if needed.
Yes, this class is pretty self explanatory, especially with the online instructions, you can read what needs to be done before class.
yes. his explanation is easy to understand
I would reccomend him to others because he knows his material and doesnt need notes to look at. Hes a great instructor.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows how to teach the material thoroughly.
Very patient with his students
Clear and concise. Answers questions to the best of his ability.
Straightforward lesson plan.
very knowledgeable about the course
He knows and understands the material well and does not hesitate to show every step.
he know what he is talking about
Very easy to understand. He broke things down and repeated it as many times as needed to understand. He answered all questions very clearly until you understood them. Great instructor.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
To go over more relevant problems similar to the exams given.
Do more example problems instead of talking about a few for a very long time.
Not sure.
more time on the test
More availability for students seeking help, even if appointments are necessary.
Can't think of anything.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He gave office hours for us to go see him if we had any concerns or questions.
He held review sessions to make sure we knew our material before our midterms.
The format was helpful. Watching the Vods and seeing the white board pages were helpful.
very helpful and flexible about office hours
Putting more points on tests? Extra-credit evaluation...
Asked if we understood and if we had questions after every demonstration.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes because even though it may be challenging, it's possible to pass if you study hard enough.
Yes, he was a good professor overall.
Yes.
I would recommend Aaron Hanai to students because he teaches very well. By the end of the course, you will know everything.
Maybe for his in-person lecture course. His online recordings are good as well, but not enough for a layperson to pass.
Yes I would. Easy to understand, fair grader and he keeps going over the subject until you understand.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Aaron Hanai is very concise with his teaching methods. He leaves out all the irrelevant content and focuses on the methods that you need to know. He goes through the material in great detail making sure not to leave out anything.
5 points extra-credit to all who filled out this evaluation plz!
Great Instructor
18. Other comments:
Great Professor!
Don't take an online class unless you already know the material and just need the credit.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Really knows the course material. Able to make generic and sample problems in the spot that makes sense.
Covered material from the pervious day and made sure we knew what needed to be understood before moving on the next day. He is very smart and knows his Physics.
Ability to "dumb" down the physics to introduce the ideas in a much simpler way than other physics instructors. He spends time to define all vocabulary before using them in new chapters.
His strengths are knowing what he has to do in order for the students to understand the problem. For example, he will work out a problem one on one with the student even though many have already asked and make sure the student really gets it. He also has a creative mind to set examples for us to visualize the problem better.
Patient, Understanding, Encouraging
Aaron definitely is knowledgeable in the subject of Physics. He was able to convey his teachings in a way that, for the most part, were easy to understand.
He was a great Prof with great knowledge. The course itself was very hard!!!
he knows what he teaching and he concerns students.
Smart Graded our work promptly Punctual Gave breaks in between topics, which was helpful
Has his own way of teaching and is effective in clarifying questions!!!
Professor Hanai's strengths as an instructor are his expertise in physics and his cheerful attitude towards his students.
Knows his subject matter very well
nice guy
Presents coplexed concepts clearly.
I can not think of any. He is vague and not very relatable.
Professor Hanai explains the course materials in great detail.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Give mock exams.
Maybe to assign more book problems to help us better understand what we should look forward to on the exam. It was difficult since the class was based strictly off of the exams and no homework.
He needs to write bigger on the board. Although I would sit closer, the seats are already taken so yeah. He needs to work out the examples with actual numbers than just abbreviations of words so there aren't so much variables in the equation that makes it look intimidating.
Simplify the course when the course is compiled up in just 5 weeks. Too much information and lessons in one week and test.
Keep doing what you're doing.
There were no particular areas that need improving, other than the general pace of the summer school course session; there was simply far too much material to adequately cover in 6 weeks/make me feel confidently knowledgeable in the class matter.
nothing
none
I would have appreciated a more organized and well prepared presentation of the course material. Perhaps a PowerPoint or something prepared ahead of time, worksheet, homework problems, or example problems, that actually gave us the answers to the questions posed, instead of giving us the answer in a series of formulas. Just knowing the formula doesn't mean you are capable of knowing when or how to use it. We can only gain so much from the textbook, especially when the text doesn't tell us the procedure to the problems or the answers to the even numbered problems. Also, when you write on the board, you don't write in a structured format. You start off that way, but half-way through you write all over the place and then it's hard to tell, when taking notes, what the step-by-step procedure is. It would be helpful if you actually did the math, instead of just writing which formula to use and leaving it that way. Lastly, you talk very quietly to the board; almost like you're talking to yourself and aren't comfortable speaking to the class. Your handwriting is tiny. I sat in the front row and could not see some of your numbers even with my glasses on.
I would like to materials/handouts be given to student for assistance!!!
If any suggestions could be made to Professor Hanai, it would be that he would have more unofficial office hours so that his students could have more opportunities to consult with him about their textbook problems, projects, labs, etc., while also interacting with him on a less formal bases.
Frequent, short pauses directly after working equation would be really helpful. Often got lost writing one equation and trying to follow next step.
none
Have a longer summer session.
I would suggest that he show more concern for students who are seeking help and having trouble in the class. He was very unavailable and almost seemed like he did not want to help any time out of class. The topic that he teaches is a very challenging one and I really would have appreciated his help. Please try to relate to students and show that you care about us understanding the topic.
It would be very helpful if we can discuss more example problems in class.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Gave additional points on a test on a problem that mostly everyone got wrong. The nest day he revisited the problem and the chapter to make sure we understood.
He would make the test 60/50 rather than 50/50 so that we could have a better chance at doing well.
He showed concern to help us bring up our grade when he knew we werent doing so well. He made sure to explain more on the topic we had trouble with to help us understand it.
He cares
He was available for office hours and graciously spoke with me when I needed to communicate. He would encourage students to study together or do practice problems at home.
Aaron would not hesitate to hold the class a few minutes past end time, in order to completely explain that last example, or make sure that his students received all the information need to study efficiently, that night. He always made himself available after class for homework help and questions, even if he were between meetings at the time. When I realized that I was not performing well in the class and took my concerns to Aaron, he took the time to help me consider which course option would suit me best, in detail. This shows that Aaron, despite being a very busy professor, still demonstrates a particular level of caring for his students.
gave extra credit and did examples from the book
He surely does concern students, and he tries to grade fair on the test..
He came to class and answered our questions. He also arranged a tutor.
Professor Hanai demonstrated his concern for his students by doing the following: 1) providing them with an exam schedule calendar through his physics/engineering Web site, 2) reviewing exam questions upon their return, 3) answering questions after class, and 4) reminding his students of the topics that they would need to be proficient at for a given exam.
Gave automatic extra credit on tests
held review sessions
Patients.
He is a nice guy but he is very vague with what he expects.
Yes.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he teaches what you need to know quickly and effectively.
Yes. He is dedicated and knows a lot about Physics.
Yes.
Yes because he has potential to become a cooler teacher, even when hes already cool
Yes, because I think he really does understand how difficult the subject is that he teaches, yet I never felt completely hopeless.
Yes; Aaron is a young professor, and his energy and understanding of Physics really helps enhance the learning process. He is also active in KCC's STEM Program, which effectively illustrates to students how Physics can be applied in real life situations. Overall, I feel like I got a great experience out of the six weeks I spent being taught by Aaron Hanai- even though I struggled greatly with the course pacing, and in the end, probably came out a lot less successful than I had hoped to be.
yes...very good professor
Yes.. from him you can learn about what you are going to learning and he wants to teach even more than regular courses.
I would recommend Professor Hanai to students who were previously exposed to the subject matter, not those who are new to the topic. He would do very well as an upper level instructor, not an intro instructor.
Yes, because he is understanding about the difficulty of the subject given that it's summer and time is very short.
I would recommend Professor Hanai to other students because all that is required of him to create an effective and informative lecture are his notes, a pen, and the participation of his students.
Yes
yes, nice guy
Yes, he is a great teacher, but physics during the summer if messed up.
No I would not. I have encountered great teachers while in the UH system and he lacks a lot of good qualities. He seems kind of lazy and doesn't really prep for class which is unfortunate for us students. He does not give any handouts or resources outside of the text book.
Yes, it is because professor Hanai's teaching method is effective.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He is a good professor. The only thing is were taking this course during the Summer so the work load is compiled and harder to learn since every week is new material than an exam to follow.
Good job for teaching us physics in 6weeks. Hard work.
He needs some confidence and need to relax a little.
Nice guy.
No other comments.
he was very good at what he does and shows great passion in the subject
I would like to take his class again!
Too smart for this intro class. Although it is a summer course, and it is supposed to be fast-paced, it seems like he gave up trying to teach us before he even started. His first words on the course were: "You are all crazy to take this class during summer". That does not instill confidence and it doesn't sound encouraging. It came off as a way of discounting our education and gave him an excuse to write formulas on the board without fully explaining anything. I pretty much taught myself in this class. I understood that a lot would be self-taught because of the fast pace, but going to class seemed like a waste of time. Prof. Hanai could definitely have done a better job. It's one thing to teach your students all you can and then have them refer to the text if they have questions while at home, but it's another thing to glaze over the subject in class and have them learn at home.
Professor Hanai's simple and straightforward method of teaching is one that is attainable only through experience and a true knowledge of the subject being taught; seeing his proficiency in physics encourages me to take steps to improve my proficiency in physics.
none
I would like to take him during a regular semester
He needs to prep practice questions before class so that he is not making up problems on the spot, it makes for bad incomplete notes.

AWESOME
;)
Whenever I asked you a question in class, your manner of answering was very condescending. I feel like you cannot relate to someone who is new to the subject and doesn't know anything about it, because you have been practicing the material so long. I'm sure you know the material very well, and to you, everything seems like common sense or very obvious, but I haven't studied science for the past three years. I come from a social work background, where things are not really quantifiable. If you could have related to me more and not made me feel like an idiot because I needed extra explanation, that would have made the course much more enjoyable.
Homework would have been fantastic to help with grade..
No.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows his subject very well and is willing to help.
He is knowledgeable at the material that we were learning and tries his best to make the students thoroughly understand the concepts.
Knowledge base for course is excellent.
Knows the course material very well. Is able to break down a chapter into what it is; teaches the chapter quickly.
Very intelligent and knowledgeable on the subject.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Demonstrate the lab once so we know how to set up the lab and perform them the labs report guides do help but sometimes is not enough.
Grade our labs earlier and return on time.
Give students mock exams. Problems from the book may be similar but don't always prepare the student for the tests.
The lab guide needs to be updated badly. you have to go back in forth between two guides and guess if your doing the right thing.
An intro to the lab would have been nice. Things like: -location of lab materials -what we are practicing that day It would have been good if we were introduced to the topic before we were told to do the lab. We got answers only when we asked. I read the lab procedure beforehand, but this was still confusing.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He is willing to help and allows us to improve our grades by giving us another chance to get a higher grade.
He walked around the classroom and would further explain the lab information if we were confused.
Allowed students who were not in the lab but in the class to visit him during the lab session to get additional help.
He came to class on time
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes because he is a good teacher.
Yes, because he is a patient and understanding Professor.
Teaches the subject quickly and what you need to know and none of the filler and fluff material. His grading is fair. His course layout is also well organized.
I would recommend this instructor to students who already are familiar with the subject matter.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Very nice teacher.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Knowledge of material, understanding of students needs, good online format, gave good examples, was very fair on exam problems.
He knows his material bur more examples done during the lecture would help
Able to clearly explain the topics and also clearly laid out what was expected from us.
He is extremely knowledgeable and able to convey the material in a logical and concise manner. He was always available during office hours and even accessible and willing to help out side of set hours. He grades fairly and promptly always letting students know where they stand.
Very clear concise explanations of material.
He is so smart and able to help us!
He knows the material well and is able to present it in a clear understandable way. Very prepared and organized during lectures.
taught the material very well
He knows everything what he is talking about on the lectures, and his lecture is pretty neat so that I can understand by looking up myself after.
He know's the subject very well.
Very knowledgable about the subject.
He is able to clearly show and demonstrate ideas and topics in an online environment. He has good communication skills.
Very knowledgable Explains subject in detail
His knowledge of Physics amazes me. Inspires students to excel. He doesn't have notes in class, yet writes so much on the board with good communication skills and organization.
He goes through a examples that are similar to those on the midterms.
He is very knowledgeable in the subjects that he teaches.
helpful, great sense of responsibility khowledgeable
knows the subject area very well. he can relate to real life engineering application, and knows which concepts are important and which one's not so much.
Aaron gives a lot of in class examples and he explains them thoroughly.
He knows his stuff and he is very smart.
Great method of teaching.
Dr. Hanai is probably the most knowledgable professor I have ever had, and not just with the coursework. Occasionally, a student will need or want to curb their curiosity and ask what seems like an off the wall question. But honestly, Dr. Hanai brilliant at relating things to a much more tangible example for students because of his diverse background.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Be more explicit about material covered that is not pertinent to exams (Pappus-Guldinus, friction between threads, bearings, etc.) Took too long to grade midterm 3 which is crucial to final grade. Give more examples instead of derivations with regard to hard topics such as moments of inertia and the parallel axis theorem (when to translate axes, translations for composite systems relative to coordinate system, etc.) Bigger curve if possible.
More examples done
It would be nice to have additional practice exams or worksheets to get a feel for how you will be testing.
Totally is great! Be more friendly to answer question will be greater.
None, class is great.
none
I needed more examples at that time when i was on lecture. sometimes i was still confused to understand how it works.
None.
Maybe do a little bit more examples in class to help re enforce some of the material
Tests were lengthy in my opinion, but it made me a better student.
Ask for more participation in class. Make class a little more exicting.
Suggest some specific problems out of the book that highlight the key points, or give us problems to do on our own between classes and go over it the next class. We do plenty of practice problems in class, but it would help to try it on our own first.
none
I'd rather take this class in-class instead of online.
I think at certain parts of the course could have been explained better. For the third mid-term, the material taught seemed simple while the test for it was extremely difficult. I thought that we could have spent more time on it then we did and it seemed like he rushed this section.
Homework problems?
None. I had the luxury of having Dr. Hanai for three courses now. Physics 170 this semester, and EE211 and CE270 this semester. Many of the gripes that I may have had back then are now nonexistent. For example, I felt the exams early last semester didn't reflect the goals of the course (Physics 170), but now it is much better. I don't feel as if I am subject to unrealistic expectations (though it wasn't likely the case even last semester either). I think we as students are being taught what will be necessary for us to be successful engineers, and any student should appreciate that.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Answers questions and reviews concepts that students have a hard time understanding. Records lectures, gives pdf version of notes, willing to help outside of class, cares about student feedback, gives extra credit, fair amount of problems on tests and problems similar to suggested book work and lecture examples, emphasizes material that is important to future courses in engineering.
Helpful and Clear.
Was helpful during office hours, though he taught so many classes these were very limited.
always went over stuff if you asked
Able to talk to him outside of class, provided opportunities to for the student to do better in class.
He frequently asks questions and is available for help.
Went over problems that many students had missed.
He would tell us what is important to know for midterms.
Always asking if we have any questions.
He is very helpful
He tried to go over new materials as early as possible before exams to give the students enough time to study the new materials. He gives extra credit on the tests.
He answers questions in chat to the best of his ablilty.
He always responded when i needed to talk to me.
Extra credit opportunities.
He showed concern by being available throughout his hectic schedule, as well as ensuring we understand the material and are prepared for the exams.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes he is a good professor who cares for students yet will prepare them well for engineering.
Yes if you can teach yourself a subject
For the most part, I would say yes.
I would recommend Dr. Hanai to other students largely because he covered more material than identical courses. He also explained the concepts using common vernacular that made it much easier to understand in comparison to explanations using mainly math and proofs.
I would recommend him as a professor for a lecture class only. It was extremely difficult to learn statics online.
Sure, I will. His class is useful!
I would definitely recommend him for CE 270. I have a far better understanding of subjects that I thought I already knew, and I look forward to taking his 271 class next semester. Well maybe not "looking forward to", but I wouldn't want to take it from anyone else.
Yes
YES! He knows everything what he teaches to students. He knows stuff very well. And his exam is fair.
Yes, he give good and clear explanations especially in an online environment.
Yes. Good teacher. Very straightforward. Teaches at level that can be understood.
Yes. You will be prepared for higher level math physics or engineering classes.
He is a pretty good teacher and easy to understand and folow.
Yes. He is a good teacher.
Yes, an excellent professor.
Yes I would. He knows all the things very well and can answer all your questions on the subject. He teaches the concept and examples, not only the one or the other.
Yes, because he is a great teacher.
Sure
Yes, great method of teaching material.
I would without a doubt. As an engineering professor, I love that he has a diverse background (Mechanical Engineering and Physics) because, for one, he is able to make perfect analogies for us students that I am not sure other professors could do; secondly, he is able to show the ways the world connects around us. How analyzing a bridge is similar to analyzing a circuit, etc. Additionally, having worked in the industry as an engineer, the amount of real-life advice he was able to give us was very valuable. It was a privilege being taught by Dr. Hanai, and honestly, I wish he was coming to UH with a lot of us as a professor.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Makes a very difficult class passable for a majority of the students.
Thank you! Your class is useful and I learn a lot from you!

He deserves an A+ when graded on his teaching performance.
He's a pretty good professor and cares about his students.
Thank you for offering this class online.
Excellent professor
Is there any way to get more info about internships?
The amount that Dr. Hanai has improved as a professor is amazing and I would just recommend that he keeps doing what he is doing.
18. Other comments:
Would look forward to future classes with Aaron.
I think this class could be taught more effectively in a class room and the medium at which it is taught is sufficient. Most of the class is sitting in library or empty classrooms on campus to take an online class which just isn't the same as sitting in class with he teacher.
He is awesome! Wish Dr.Hanai can teach another class and I can still learn from him!
None.
Thank you Aaron for an awesome semester! Three classes with you... all of them were amusing. All the best to you and your family.
I like in-class courses better; I'm not a big fan of online classes and Blackboard. That's the only thing that could be improved, at least from the viewpoint of a KCC student.
Thank you for a rewarding semester. Come to UH! Not a comment for Dr. Hanai in particular, but having CE270 online is really not the best way to learn that course material in my opinion.

taught the material very well and explained everything in detail
Knows the subject very well, and was fair.
Great at explaining the material clearly for us students to understand. Encourages students to try work for themselves to pass the class.
Please see CE270 review.
Great concepts to teaching material
Great teacher knowledgeable, able to correlate material to the other classes he teaches as well. Improves with every semester I have taken a class from him.
Very knowledgeable and serious. Can communicate with students and his tests are definitely asking a lot from the student.
He knew his subject
Aaron is good at explaining things simply and is not worried about the crap.
