7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I appreciated the readings, especially the Hamilton and Shopes book. All of the required reading assignments were relative to what we were learning about in class With regards to the actual interview process, I appreciated having the chance to interview one of the other students prior to interviewing my real interviewee. I learned a lot from viewing the video, Under the Jarvis Moon.
The most helpful component of the course was our class discussions. From relating difficulties with our projects to talking about readings, I appreciated our conversations the most.
Learning how to interview, and understanding that much valuable history/perspective is gained from the "normal" people in the community.
I found the discussion helpful. Email reminders were very helpful as well.
Doing an oral history project/interview with a person of our choosing was great! I think it really helped the class and myself to experience first-hand the process of doing oral history and why this type of inquiry is so valuable in the education context and research.
Warrenʻs "talk story" style was very consistent with the method of oral histories. I found the selection of reading material informative as well as the numerous examples that he shared with the class. It was very fascinating to hear about and see some of the oral histories he has been involved in documenting and I was intrigued by how they oral histories might look in various formats (e.g. website, DVD, bound transcriptions, journal collection). Warrenʻs feedback to the group and his individual feedback was also very informative, and helped me to reflect on my understanding of the concepts shared. For instance, his comments on the perspective and credibility of the author in the book, Bittermelon, challenged me to think more critically about the role of the interview/author, and what was shared or perhaps not shared in by the oral historian. When I compared this to the articles in Hamilton and Shopes, and some of the information shared by some of my Native Hawaiian colleagues, this enriched my perspective. Truth is relative, as seen through the lens of different people. It truly enabled me to think more about my ethical responsibility in conveying someoneʻs oral history and how the process and relationship involved in doing oral histories is truly a partnership where trust and honest presentation of a personʻs voice is essential.
The Oral History Strategies were very helpful.
I appreciated learning the facilitative ideas and dispositions needed for conducting an interview. I could apply those ideas toward my regular job as well. I also appreciated Dr. Nishimoto's facilitative approach to teaching the course, his flexibility, and most of all, his caring disposition. He worked to build a rapport with me, and I appreciated that. He truly modeled the disposition you would want to have when conducting an interview.
The examples used, both personal and previous students' work to help accomplish my own assignments.
Dr. Nishimoto is a great professor because he speaks from experience. He taught us everything there is to know about how to conduct an effective Oral History interview and how to use that information as data for qualitative research purposes. This would have been a very difficult course to understand, if it was taught by someone who does not have the same experience he does with this research method. He was able to answer those difficult questions only someone would be able to understand after going through that experience for many many years. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Nishmoto's class and learned so much valuable techniques which will definitely help me to conduct my research.
I found the oral history interviews to be the most helpful. It prepares me to do interviews on my own and it showed me how to use literature reviews to back it up.
The course gave us the varied research approach and theoretical insight on oral history. The findings on in-class articles and visual aids were greatly helped my understandings on the practicum on oral history research better.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I would have preferred more opportunity to practice the interview process. Also, I would have appreciated more time to learn who my classmates were. I was never really sure of some of their names. If we had more opportunity to work/discuss in small groups, that would have been helpful. Also, I would have liked to share our responses in small groups first prior to sharing in a larger group setting. Although the video of the oral interviews was good (local Japanese combatants), I would have preferred to watch only one or two at the most.
Can't think of anything. Everything was helpful.
Great feedback from the instructor, but little opportunities to use that feedback.
Some of the readings weren't very helpful in discussing the process of oral history.
Hmmm . . . this is hard for me to answer because I did thoroughly enjoy the course. The one thing which I think perhaps was me, maybe, being confused, about what I was supposed to do for the final assignment. It could be that I might have been absent or inattentive to key information. I felt like the final assignment got away from me or I did not make the appropriate adjustments and it morphed along the way. Or perhaps I did not grasp until too late, what I was supposed to be doing, and thus, I have worked myself into a pickle on how to write it up in a way that works with the original directions we had. I think, perhaps, this might be more a reflection on me trying to do this for the first time. The journey has been exhilarating, but I think I grossly misjudged time or the scope of the assignment somehow. Or may be am just in the process of developing the skill set to engage in this kind of a process more effectively. At any rate, I have a long way to go.
I guess I would have liked to learn about methodologies other than conducting an oral history interview in conducting qualitative research. I also felt more time could have been spent on how to analyze our data.
I know it's an qualitative research course, but having the information be primarily orally presented made it difficult to direct my full attention during entire class sessions.

There's nothing least valuable. However I wish I could have more samples on interview process. I hope we could have more imitation interviews, watching videos on varied types of interviewees. Maybe, before the real interview,we could have a students' interview practice a little bit more. This is because, in the real process of interview, I had many unexpected difficulties in terms of its theory, purpose, and methodologies. And, I was puzzled with those hardships, and confused about how I could overcome those difficulties. Then these confusion sometimes intervened the smooth organization of the interview.

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Professor Nishimoto is thoughtful and well-organized. He provided numerous examples of how to conduct an oral history interview in an ethical manner. I appreciated his sharing of his own work and samples/models from which we could build upon. He thoughtfully responded to questions I asked and cared if we understood the concepts he was teaching.
Dr. Nishimoto is very knowledgeable about the course content and obviously cares for the success of his students.
Excellent!
Overall, friendly professor who knows oral history. Passionate about what he does and it shows.
He's a great teacher and is obviously very passionate about oral history.
Awesome Professor
Great! Dr. Nishimoto was a great teacher, very knowledgeable and experienced in conducting oral history interviews.
Very knowledgable about the course material and an experienced oral historian. Open to all questions and willing to help where he can. Punctual and returns students' assignments in a timely manner.
Dr. Nishimoto is a great professor and believe he is the best to be teaching this particular course. He's experience with conducting Oral History interviews and conducting research based on the data is invaluable.
The professor produced a very relaxing atmosphere through all the classes. I've never felt uneasiness or difficulties on his organization of the class. He was always open to our discussions, and he gave us careful/pertinent comments for each of us. I greatly appreciate his great involvement and attention to each assigned paper. His comments on all the assignments was very helpful to further academic improvement.

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I would highly recommend others to take this class, especially if they are interested in using oral history in their thesis or dissertation. I hadn't realized interviewing could be so engaging and used as a tool to formulate/base theories.
Very good. Very useful knowledge and skill gained.
This course taught me that I can learn from other people. I notice that I am more aware of other perspectives and I listen to how their life histories affect who they are today. I must say, it makes life quite interesting.
I think it was a great course and I'm happy that it focused on oral history as a mode of educational inquiry. There's so much to be learned by listening and codifying what our educators or community members have to say.
This was a very gratifying and validating experience. It is so lovely to feel I am walking away with such a powerful tool for capturing the human experience and shining a light on it.
Awesome Course
A good course to have taken. However, my dissertation is not going to involve conducting an oral history interview, so I'm not sure how helpful it was for me to complete my degree.
This course really gave me a general overview of how to conduct an oral history interview, and I can see the relevance in using interviews in research projects.
My overall evaluation, if I were to conduct both a qualitative and/or quantitative analysis, the data would point to the fact that Dr. Nishimoto is nothing other than the perfect professor to be teaching this course.
I enjoyed the class very much. Actually, I was not thinking about interview research for my thesis. However, since now I knew the power of oral history, I am thinking to use oral history research to my thesis project. The class was very dynamic and I was greatly influenced by the content of instruction, professor, and all the peers.
20. Other comments:
I enjoyed the course and thank you for opening my eyes to what oral history is. I look forward to interviewing my siblings in the hopes that we can compile a book for the children and grandchildren to reference in the future.
The assignments helped me very much and Dr. Nishimoto was always free to give help. It would be nice to have a rubric or checklist of specific content that are desired to be in the writing assignents, just to give some parameters.
I really enjoyed the class and I felt like I learned another perspective from this course, so no complaints. The only small thing is sometimes I'm not so clear on what is expected on the assignment (It could also be that sometimes I am a bit tired and out of it). I usually just take the assignment and as I'm completing it I wonder "Is this what he was asking for? Am I doing it right?" I wish there was more examples of what is expected so I know that Im approaching the assignment correctly.
Aloha Warren and thank you so much for your manaʻo. I truly enjoyed our semester together.
Mahalo nui loa, this class was very awesome!!!
I would have liked to see more oral history interviews related to things in the education field, as majority, if not all the students are pursuing a degree related to education.

Since this semester was my first semester in EDEF, I was very nervous for the first couple of classes. But, I enjoyed the class, and the class overall enlightened me on the question/curiosity to the oral history.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I appreciated that the course was set up as a practicum, and the assignments all led to the final project. I enjoyed this learning by doing. I also enjoyed the more contemporary theorizing of oral history in the Hamilton and Shopes collection. I would have enjoyed more reading like that. The guest speaker was great and the examples from oral history projects our instructor was involved in were really helpful as well. In-class exercises were also valuable. Thank you!
On how to actually go about conducting an interview with people with interesting lives.
Everything
I can practice methodology base on theory I have learned
Applying the concepts into practice through the oral interviews.
The practical aspect of the course, the semester long process of building up to the final project, and the close mentoring of the students.

i understood the concept of Oral history, a new concept to me and to the Vietnamese researchers. Thus, i explored ways to approach studies in the future. each task for students step by step was helped us to follow the instruction of the class. after that, i feel that it is easy and interesting.
We analyzed everything involved in doing a great oral history project. We were encouraged and allowed to apply this to our own families and communities. We received great feedback and guidance for our own projects.
Warren made the course very interesting in that he was able to incorporate his research and oral histories and he was able to convey concepts that were from the text book easily to the class. I highly recommend Warren as an instructor.
