The lab could have been better organized, setting more strict deadlines concerning the building of our systems I think could have moved the process along faster. overall very good teaching and the material provided for designing our systems was excellent.

As late at night as it is, and how tired I am, he makes class a bit more enjoyable because he is fair and understands the material fairly well.
Needs better command to reach every student.
I wish that the class had focused more on hawaiian fishponds. It became so focused on modern techniques that the class seemed to lose its purpose and focus. Mahalo

Course feels a little limited by multiple factors, as to what was able to be accomplished to advantage for the days and time spent at the fishpond. I have trouble identifying what real practical skill was refined in myself.

The practical aspects; being how to set up a fishpond.
Aqua culture
Leonard Young helped me to make connections between the scientific material and practical application. He also motivated to get started with projects at home while continuing with my studies. Now I have developed my project with a small business that generates a small income that I can continue part time while still in school.
Working in the fish pond. The discussion and class talks.
leonard has a wealth of real life scenarios from his own experiences in the aquaculture industry that offer superior visualization of the presented topics.
The Readings.

When we spoke about getting study guides for each power point Mr. Young did it. That would have been the only thing he could have improved on.
Less jargon and a pre-requisite requirement
He teaches well and provides lecture materials online. He expects us to review the lecture prior to class and take Cornell notes during the class and expand on them afterwards. His expectations may be a little too high for community college level.
If the power point presentations were more orderly and clear i would have been able to understand concepts easier. Also, I think there should be a biology prerequisite because the vocabulary/terminology was extremely hard to understand for the first Month or so. If Leonard Had dedicated time and had homework assigned for the purpose of vocabulary i would have had an easier time in the coarse.
more use of visuals, like illustrations and graphs
Organize lessons and make studying guidelines clears and more pertinent to what is asked on test and quiz's.

It was a worth while course.
Too much jargon on tests. it takes more time to break down and understand the question than it dose to answer it.
It is a fairly difficult course and the exams are quiet challenging.
Fish ponds should be used as a tool to bread fish, not a cultural anomaly.

The topic is good, the information is correct, the presentation needs work.

The fact that I had no interest in the subject really hurt my ability to show up and want to learn.
This is the best class I've ever taken in college. It's practical and my family is already benefiting from what I am learning.
I think that the aquaponics class is a class well worth taking, the students have a lot of good ideas and a lot of very useful information was shared with each other, i feel that doctor young has presented us with ways that would fine toon our very ideas. Because the school doesnʻt have itʻs own aquaponic facility to were the students are able to learn on hands by building such system that could help to create awareness of the aquaponics class as well as have students put together sytems so that the school could have plants to be used in festivals as well medical reasons as well as have fish for students to have as a food source as well as raising fish as pets!
He had no regard to time or respect of students time. He routinely went over his alloted time for instruction. He did not have a syllabus until 2 weeks into the semester. None of his lectures coorelated with any one chapter. He is a very knowledgeable instructor but lacks communication skills and cannot transfer his information on the lowest levels. He should have taught a masters level class.
I appreciate how long he has been a mentor to students in the way of Aquaculture. His career is based on what he teaches and has resources like personal friends outside of the school teachers.
Dr. Young is a true professor regarding his ability to keep the student engaged in the subject of aquaculture. I will indeed take any supplimental courses he is designated to teach.
He is a very intelligent teacher with a lot of information to share with us however with all that information we have no clue what to exactly study for there has been no reviews. On specific subjects he gives us options however he does not apply our decisions to the lessons. So it becomes very annoying when he gives us the option and then ignores it. I do appreciate the fact that he does give us his personal time to answer any questions or interest we may have. I have been motivated to build my own system and i did do it successful. Many other students have shown interest as well and has been asking me about the class. I would take it again but i would ask more questions and study better,.

I think Mr. Young was able to get a good class through difficult conditions without having an aquaculture facility to work with. We needed to spend a significant amount of money and time in order to conduct simple lab experiences in aquaponics. The school needs to provide the facility. Also, it should be more clearly stated in the course description that there is no aquaculture facility for student use at WCC.
He has much to educate on how to propagate the environment in the scientific point of view. He has the way to help sustain the environment by not using the natural resources.
He had no regard to time or respect of students time. Sometimes up to 1 hour over. He allowed students to handle acid without the proper safety breifing. He did not have a syllabus until 2 weeks into the semester. None of his lectures coorelated with any one chapter. He is a very knowledgeable instructor but lacks communication skills and cannot transfer his information on the lowest levels. He should have taught a masters level class. He did not know how to use measurement instruments. He suggested that students by additional equipment that was not outlayed in the course description. This should have been a wonderful class but not with this instructor and only if we are supplied a lab. We did a walk thru the aquaponic section at WCC and we weren't even welcome there. If the aquaponics class at Wcc is not accepted at the aquaponic gardens at Wcc, we should get every single penny back that we invested.
Dr. Young has made this science class fun for me.
No lab for aquaculture
For the lab credit in AUQA 106L, I believe the lab did not fully meet the expectations of the student. Though the lab course is informative, the fundamental objective of "applied" or "hands-on" learning was lacking due to the absence of a aquaculture facility to practice classroom concepts. In the very near future, please see to it that Dr. Young will have the tools to encourage future students to apply themselves in the emerging field of aquaculture here in Hawaii and abroad. The budgeting and placement of such a facility is pertinent to student success at WCC and beyond.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The aspects about this course which were the most valuable were the knowledge of how a Hawaiian fishpond works. Prior to this class I didn't have an inclination of how they worked, what each part of the pond did, and how organisms are affected by it. The knowledge of the laws and regulations of a aquaculture system were also valuable. Having the powerpoints and podcasts were also very valuable.
The books that were assigned were very interesting and helpful in preparing for the class quizzes and tests as well as the projects.
The power point was most valuable...
What I found most valuable in this course was the ability to grow fish organically and use their waste products to feed my plants. The proper way to make my ponds and stock them.
It was nice to learn a little bit about the hawaiian culture behind a fishpond, and the species of fish in the hawaiian fishpond.
The aspects of Hawiian culture were very interesting. I also liked the subjects covering the local animal life.
We were able to learn things that, I believe, would be missing from a text book. For instance, a few ways to increase the value of the catch.
I believe the aspects of this course that value me the most is the part when our professor explain that we could do more than fishing in the ocean when we can just raise our own. Which farming is my kind of thing. He isa reall y good in what he does.
This course helped me to utilize what I already knew and what I learned in the class.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Some of the powerpoints were very lengthy and not all of the information pertinent to what we needed.
i found the information of large scale farming unuseful because it was more based for people that were looking to have a farm.
It was unorganized at the beginning of the course. The syllabus was late and didn't follow the order. The quiz was until clear and hard to understand. For the final project doing a power point and paper at the end of the course is difficult becuase we have other class to do. Should of broke it down and had a power point in the mid semster and the paper for last. Should of done more group discussion because most of us are ALL LOST!!! When doing the power point and uploading to Laulima need to upload it a day ahead and not before class. Some people can't learn by writing whats on the power point and listening to you talk. Its very very difficult!! In your syllabus you wrote when we were having a quiz but most of the time we had a quiz that wasnt in the syllabus. For example on Feb 4tha and April 20th. Keeping to the shecdule is very important.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I feel Professor Young could try to approach the students with the idea that they know completely nothing about biology, chemistry, and aquaculture. He used terms that many of us didn't know prior to class and concepts we had to understand as we went. The information he taught was important, but his method was sometimes monotonous. I feel he could have given a little more of an introduction to the generalities of aquaculture than dove into the details. Also having visuals of certain things like what plankton would look like, or fecal pellets to allow us to have a visual understanding of what he's talking about. A visualization of circulation of ponds/aquaculture systems would also have been helpful perhaps because I'm more of a visual learner.

Fix the podcast and make them able to reverse and fast forward so you don,t have to listen to the whole podcast.

17. What changes would you make in the lectures?
I would change the structure of how he would start lectures. Like previously said, he could have started with a more introductory level or understanding of aquaculture so the class could have a general idea of how the aquaculture of a Hawaiian pond works. I understand that this class numerically comes after the 106/160? class, but many of the students didn't take the class prior to 201. I would also change the lectures to have more pictures. Visual learners, like myself, aren't able to grasp the concept as quickly as audio learners. Seeing a picture of how things work would have made it easier to understand. Also seeing pictures of various organisms talked about (especially fish) would be easier for myself to remember.

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It's a good & interesting course to take if one is interested in the Hawaiian pond aquaculture system. It is a difficult course if one is simply jumping into it with no previous background knowledge of aquaculture. It would also be a lot easier to take with the lab to allow the student to have hands on learning and a visual aid as to specific things that would be talked about in class.
It was okay, but I really stress that there be more organization and that the syllabus be followed.

I really enjoyed the lab portion of the class, but it was still not very organized.
One big issue was, that we were told that the notebooks would be ungraded, it had even said so in the syllabus. But the notebook was graded and expectations for the notebooks were not clearly explained before hand and were quite high.
There wasn't much to do at the fishpond.
The lab was very interesting!! I enjoy going to the fishpond and seeing first hand how the firshpond work. I disagree with the lab book. In the beginning you told us to keep a lab book and it wasnt going to be graded and it doesnt have to be structure. It was just OUR feild notes and to sum up that day. When we had to turn in our lab book and you looked trough it I was unhappy with the results. You telling me it had to be this way and giving me a C wasnt right. You cant say something and say something esle after the fact it was mid semester... I was unhappy getting a C because I wroked very hard on it and most the people did it last min. and got a B. I also dont understand when this lab class is one credit and we have to do a presentation and a paper... I think thats to much bcuase we have to do that for class... I can see to do that for class becuase its a three credit class. Many of us have other class to do and its very very hard to find the time to finish... So dont be surprise if some of us didnt do the project for class because we are to busy with the lab project...

HE did a good job of using occupational examples.
The instructor. When I enrolled in this course I wondered how someone could teach it. Mr. Leonard Young has/is been doing such a wonderful job. His passion for education, the environment, society and fellow man shows in every class I attended during this semester. His knowledge base is so vast I feel I can ask him anything about anything and he would be able to give me a thourough understandable reply, and the patience to make sure everyone in class got it. In my opinion there is not abetter instructor anywhere, only as good. And those are few and far between. After that, this course teaches an essential life skill; providing food for oneself all the way up to a community. Also, many ideas to put into practice to earn a living. Last but not least many self sustaining, environmentaly friendly approaches for providing people with food.

learning how to set up an aquaponic system, a combination of aquaculture and hydrophonics, to start my own system and in the near future become self-efficient in producing protein (fish) and vegetables for my family in my backyard at a very low cost.
