| I enjoyed building ceramic projects out of clay. Different techniques of clay building were presented to make and each one was enjoyable every time. My favorite project was the mask building, being my creative self it enabled me to build a wonderful masterpiece. |
| handbuilding techniques was very relaxing and helps to relieve tension. the many projects were interesting though ones artistic abilities have gone down the toilet along with ones imagination and flow. all in all have managed to create a few descent pieces through the many different ways of how to handle clay, the do's and don'ts as well as working with classmates and sharing ideas, lending an ear, or lending some clay. an easy going atmosphere that aids in the oncentration to produce the many items that were created and still creating. YAHHHH! |

| I enjoyed this class because I first came in scared to be here, due to not having experience with Ceramics. We did not have a textbook or that kind of assignments, like other classes. We got to do all of our work in the classroom. That was so great! She was attentive to our needs, and helped us whenever we needed it. I really had no idea of what I was doing in this class, but I needed an Art class, and I chose the right one. Others in the class were more experienced than I was, and still others were on my level, learning as I did. We were in all different levels of learning, yet she was patient with all of us. It's got to be hard trying to teach to all different levels of learning, but she did it. She was very understanding with everyone and life's problems that came up. She gave us time to work on projects too. I have learned and grew from her teaching. I got to make things I never dreamed I could make. I gained self-confidence by learning at my own pace, but not falling behind. She is a very good instructor. It takes a lot of knowledge and physical work, in this class. Not to mention putting up with the different minds, attitudes, and personalities of students she had to teach. I enjoyed it and liked all the projects and assignments we had to do, even if it was only done in class. I look forward to taking this class again, next semester. |
| The projects we started with, allowed us to progress the fastest, in my opinion. After basic instruction we were basically given reign to design how ever we pleased. For those that wanted to go a little further than the basics we were introduced into some more advanced things, which allowed for better projects and more creativity. |
| What I like about this class is that it's a chill class where I can create my own things out of clay. It's fun to take. |
| I really loved the variety of projects that we were given the opportunity to

| I can't think of anything that was needed to improve this class. I told her how she could teach this class without any help?! She could handle it though.If anything needed improving, it was the students themselves. Like in every class, you have those that want to learn, then you have those that think they know it all. She did good, it definitely takes PATIENCE! |

| I don't know what else to say. I have learned about things to do with clay, and the different types of clay. I learned about glazes and temperatures for different projects, and glazes also. I learned way more than I knew in the beginning, and I now feel more confident to take it to the next level. I will be taking the Intermediate handbuilding class, next semester. I hope to be able to build on the skills I have now learned. I look forward to her being my instructor next semester. | I liked the introduction of various products, such as dried beans, into the clay to create different effects. I liked that the kiln was fired every week and I got to see fired products throughout the semester. The TA's were very helpful in getting the kiln loaded, fired and unloaded throughout the semester. Especially TA Mr. Chris. |

| I loved this class mainly because of Ms. Mann and her ability to encourage me to do well. I am very critical of my creativity, but she would not listen to it. She encouraged me and validated my progress in learning about ceramics. I am looking foreword to her class next year. I love this teacher and her passion for the course. |

decorate our homes with such pieces. |
| Be more strict when students misbehave. when a student is strugling you might consider assigning that student a student helper, and perhaps give the helper a little extra credit. |

| The projects came in an array of forms, with different projects testing our capacity to learn and think outside of the box to complete the task. Many of the projects were unique to the course. One in particular were the construction of ocarina flutes. Overall, the course was very satisfying. |
| personally, i found this course a very fun and lively course!! it's great to wake up early in the morning lookinf forward to ceramics as my first thing to do because the course itself is fun and monika is awesome.
my favorite activities were making flutes and using the extruder, making the ocarinas, making the mask, and glazing with the cone 10 glazes. i liked the monika had a set up a diverse amount of artwork we had to accomplish, and that she knew how to detail ceramics well. one of the techniques i learned was flattening the clay by hand, without the use of the roller. |

| I think the course should involve more glazing earlier in the semester after projects are bisque fired so there is no end of the year rush to glaze everything. The syllabus stated what we were going to learn but there should be more concrete deadlines. By having deadlines and having consequences for not following them, it will hopefully motivate students to meet all of the deadlines, allowing the class to move forward together with everyone on the same projects (this only occured in the last weeks of the semester). |
| what would have made this class better for me is if we had a longer period of time to work on the flutes and ocarinas because they require a certain amount of testing to find the right way to blow the holes, or even the right size to make the holes, and how many holes one can put on it (more so for the ocarina).

| Over the course of the entire last year that I have been learning at HCC, Monika Mann has single handedly taught me more than the rest of my teachers combined. Please, allow me to list just a few of the lessons she has taught me.
-She has taught me determination, and how to laugh at myself when I mess up.
-She has taught me courage, the courage to do what I want to do, and what I feel is right to do.
-She has taught me how to know when to give up, and not tuck tail and run, but to let things go in their own way and time.
-She has taught me how to find simple joy in life again, by way of making art.
-She has taught me to not take things too seriously, to let life go about and pull you along.
-But most of all? Monika Mann has shown me my medium, by way of clay. My own element to push and pull to shape into something I desire.

| Ceramics is a hands on class therefore making it more enjoyable than a class of non stop lecturing. The students help make the class interesting with their individual ideas and creations. |

| The firing process should be an ongoing process so we can see our projects during the course of the semester instead of seeing the final glazed pieces at the end of the semester. Glazing should be taught the first month of the class so we can do the steps as we complete each project. The firing needs to be done in a timely fashion during the entire semester not rushed at the end of session |

Monika could have given us advance notice on the type of project we were going to be working on next, that way we'd have time to come up with a design. At least, that would have made it easier for me. Also, warning about the time frame of when it's too late to work with your clay (can't shape it, can't expand it, etc because it's too dry) would have been nice. |

| This is one of my favorite classes at HCC. I love walking into the ceramics studio,watching people "create" with clay, talking story and listening to music. It is such a pleasant enviornment. I think Monika handles many people coming at her all at once very well. She is an excellent artist and a patient and thoughtful teach, even when she makes her cute litte expressions with her face. She rocks!!!!!! |

Suggest a lab fee of $10. per student be charged to defray some of the propane cost...it was done in the past. |

| She seems a little bit scatter brained - It is frustrating when I ask for her help or her professional advice, and then someone else comes and asks a question, and she goes to them. And so on. I have seen this happen with other students when they ask questions too, and she tries to do too many things at once. I often found myself waiting forever just for her to get back to me after helping three or four other people. |

| I enjoyed this class last semester and I enjoyed it even more this semester. So, I would not change anything. |
| to be honest i wouldnt change much maybe have a day twice a semester where all the students clean the studio top to bottom. |

| If I were teaching this course students would have gone thru the entire process in the first month to see the end result and glaze choices. There should be definite calendar days for demos so that the student can aticipate what is to happen since our time is so important. The kiln should be fired as soon as the shelves fill with finished pieces so that the student can see their end result. The kilns were only in full operation at the end of the semester and as I write this the studio is full of unfired projects. The students should be accountable for cleaning their area and shared areas as well. Perhaps weekly monitors should be assigned..something has to be done to take care of this matter.
After the instructor does a demo she should make sure she cleans up the area as an example for her students. It's hard to preach something you don't practice.
There should be a raku firing every semester for an added experience for the students to show another option. |
| i would prepare a schedule of events, topics and STICK to it. For example, i might set aside the first hour of every week for a lecture and demonstration of a particular technique, then leave the rest of the time for student lab work; and be consistent so that they know they must be in class at least the first hour when demonstrations are done. Moreover, I would prepare materials and equipment ahead of time for these lecture/demonstrations; not take up class time for prep. |
| If I were teaching this course, I would have several assitants to help with different sections on the previous subjects of ceramics that I have instructed. For example: Hand building has a lot of sections that can be taught but would be hard to continue to help people with and at the same time continue to teach on new subjects such as wheel throwing. Having individuals who are familiar with the subjects would help to lessen her load as well as getting the information you need without disturbing the immediate instructor when she is teaching another subject. I am talking about volunteer helpers, cause I know the Hawcc can not pay them. |

| Pottery, both handbuilding and wheelhrowing depends upon a specific sequence of actions in order to go from raw clay to a finished product. Students, particularly beginning students need to understand this process, whether it is coiling, slab-making, slip molding, wheelthrowing, etc. It goes from working with raw materials, forming the product, drying, bisque firing, glazing, glaze firing to finished product. If these steps are not taught and done in a timely fashion, the tail end (a finished product) does not get completed until after the semester is over. This has happened for several semesters. There are consequences. 1) How is the student graded when the products are not completed through no fault of the student. 2) How are students to learn glazing and testing of glazes on clay, if this is not taught till the last weeks of the semester. 3) Ceramics, like other arts, is a learning by doing sort of skill, how can a student even evaluate his own work without a completed product until perhaps the next semester or not at all. 4) Where is the intrinsic reward for a student if he/she is unable to see what he has done? Isn't this what real learning is about? |

truly good teacher/instructor does, she was able to convey her expertise without making me feel
like a novice. The energy at the ceramics studio is very comfortable, fluid, and supportive of artistic
expression. I attribute this to Monika and her teaching sensitivity. |

humans need more positive outlets such as ceramics to help us cope when life gets hairy. |

Our class schedule seems much shorter then all the previous years, and the length of class has been cut by an hour. Wet clay days end much to early. The firing of items need to start earlier in the semester....we need to have more firings. I repeat WE NEED TO HAVE MORE FIRINGS.
All in all......Monika brings with her an abundance of knowledge...and opens my eyes to many wonderful ways to do clay. |

| Begin on time. BE PREPARED to do demonstrations. Be available and approachable during class time for assisting students. Don't be so emotional. Use of the full instruction time (we ended our projects in early November leaving alot of us with nothing to do) The class seemed to be geared toward a ceramic sale in early December rather than instruction time for the students. We had no class meeting time during finals week.
