13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?

We got to make anything we wanted. We can use it to eat or drink out of.

The many fun projects we could make for ourselves and as gifts

i absolutely love this class!!!! super fun n relaxing!!!!

I enjoyed building ceramic projects out of clay. Different techniques of clay building were presented to make and each one was enjoyable every time. My favorite project was the mask building, being my creative self it enabled me to build a wonderful masterpiece.

handbuilding techniques was very relaxing and helps to relieve tension. the many projects were interesting though ones artistic abilities have gone down the toilet along with ones imagination and flow. all in all have managed to create a few descent pieces through the many different ways of how to handle clay, the do's and don'ts as well as working with classmates and sharing ideas, lending an ear, or lending some clay. an easy going atmosphere that aids in the oncentration to produce the many items that were created and still creating. YAHHHH!

There are a lot of techniques involved, makes me want to major in ceramics!

I enjoyed this class because I first came in scared to be here, due to not having experience with Ceramics. We did not have a textbook or that kind of assignments, like other classes. We got to do all of our work in the classroom. That was so great! She was attentive to our needs, and helped us whenever we needed it. I really had no idea of what I was doing in this class, but I needed an Art class, and I chose the right one. Others in the class were more experienced than I was, and still others were on my level, learning as I did. We were in all different levels of learning, yet she was patient with all of us. It's got to be hard trying to teach to all different levels of learning, but she did it. She was very understanding with everyone and life's problems that came up. She gave us time to work on projects too. I have learned and grew from her teaching. I got to make things I never dreamed I could make. I gained self-confidence by learning at my own pace, but not falling behind. She is a very good instructor. It takes a lot of knowledge and physical work, in this class. Not to mention putting up with the different minds, attitudes, and personalities of students she had to teach. I enjoyed it and liked all the projects and assignments we had to do, even if it was only done in class. I look forward to taking this class again, next semester.

The projects we started with, allowed us to progress the fastest, in my opinion. After basic instruction we were basically given reign to design how ever we pleased. For those that wanted to go a little further than the basics we were introduced into some more advanced things, which allowed for better projects and more creativity.

What I like about this class is that it's a chill class where I can create my own things out of clay. It's fun to take.

I really loved the variety of projects that we were given the opportunity to do. I felt like I learned a lot about the basic techniques behind ceramics and I was amazed at what I was able to make. Thank you Ms. Monika!

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

no.

Maybe an intro to wheel throwing, get familiar with the process and do little projects on the wheel, if students are interested in joining the wheel throwing class next semester.It would be amazing.

I can't think of anything that was needed to improve this class. I told her how she could teach this class without any help?! She could handle it though.If anything needed improving, it was the students themselves. Like in every class, you have those that want to learn, then you have those that think they know it all. She did good, it definitely takes PATIENCE!

Ten minutes required notes daily, for a percent of the grade, to force students to pay attention.

Give more time to finish projects and better instructions and attitude towards the help needed.

I don't know what else to say. I have learned about things to do with clay, and the different types of clay. I learned about glazes and temperatures for different projects, and glazes also. I learned way more than I knew in the beginning, and I now feel more confident to take it to the next level. I will be taking the Intermediate handbuilding class, next semester. I hope to be able to build on the skills I have now learned. I look forward to her being my instructor next semester. I thank her for helping me along the way, and being patient; thus building up my self-confidence.

I wish that there was a another class for intermediate handbuilding.

I learned so much about patience while doing wheel throwing ceramics! i learned how to center, how to do the pulls and i was greatly inspired by working with Monika as well as the other students in my class!

Everything!

I found this class challenging and the projects were fun once I got the hang of it.

I like creating ceramic pieces with my own hands.

Loved it all, and enjoy being able to bring back pieces to share with family, friends and laughing roots farm! Appreciate the making of instruments as well! wOooo wooo!

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

I know that Ms. Mann is always there for all her students and she was there for me every step of the way. I took this class because of her. There is nothing I would suggest to improve this course.

Monika is amazing. She is really encouraging. She is good at giving one suggestions when they are seeked.

I loved this class and learned a lot about ceramics and color. I found Ms. Mann went over and beyond help with me and I would do another on of her classes in the future.

I really liked her class.

I am very grateful that I have taken this class and had the opportunity to meet Monika. I feel she is a wonderful teacher, and talented artist. I like her approach on things and will remember her through my ceramic pieces and every time I see ceramics! haha sending all good vibes and happiness her way!

i learned a new skill

I enjoyed Monika's class and she made it fun and exciting. I am taking more classes under Monika's instruction.

I loved this course. I learned a lot about clay and how to create useful and fun things. Ms. Mann is a great teacher who is always willing to help make my pieces turn out great. She really wants her students to get excited about learning.

It has been really relaxing to perform such clay work. Learned much about ceramics and building techniques.

This was the most fun class I have ever taken. Monika went above and beyond for me and any other student that showed an interest. She is generous and encouraging by nature. I'm sorry that she has to deal with some rude, lazy and occasionally not all that bright students.

I liked looking at other art works for examples. It gave me idea about what other designs I could make.

I WAS NEVER TOO KEEN ABOUT CERAMICS UNTIL I TOOK THE COURSE AND LEARNED HOW TO APPRECIATE SUCH A SUBJECT. CERAMICS IS HEALING TO THE SOUL AND I RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO TRY THIS AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME.

I liked the introduction of various products, such as dried beans, into the clay to create different effects. I liked that the kiln was fired every week and I got to see fired products throughout the semester. The TA's were very helpful in getting the kiln loaded, fired and unloaded throughout the semester. Especially TA Mr. Chris.

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

maybe less hours 2 and a half is really long

Nope, it was perfect.

I loved this class mainly because of Ms. Mann and her ability to encourage me to do well. I am very critical of my creativity, but she would not listen to it. She encouraged me and validated my progress in learning about ceramics. I am looking foreword to her class next year. I love this teacher and her passion for the course.

Do an intensive summer course! Please.

THANKS MS. MONIKA FOR YOUR TIME TEACHING US. I'VE HAD FUN AND REALLY ENJOYED THIS CLASS TIME. I WILL TAKE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN....EVEN IF IT'S SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I would like to learn more about firing a kiln, and more about glazes. Perhaps in a more advanced class. Monika Mann really encouraged me to enjoy working with clay. She introduced me to many different techniques of hand building. I enjoyed spending time in class with Monika Mann.

the hands on learning that this class provided gave me an excellent learning advantage and being able to make so much art was superb.

I liked that this course was hands-on and that we were able to make a lot of pieces and learn all different ways of creating with clay.

She has given me the opportunity to learn how to create many wonderful art project with Clay and it has also given us a chance to develop a key role.

This was a great course. Monika Mann did an excellent job. Art has never come easy to me, she really helped me with this.

I liked creating things with the clay.

I liked working with my hands and creating things, even if they looked like a kindergartener made them. I also liked how she gave us themes to work with. I'm sure I would have just sat there deciding on what to make, all class period, otherwise.

This course was very fun.

Be more willing to want to teach the students rather than making it seem like you do not want to put up with anyone that day.

Not making Native Hawaiian themes required. We have to keep these pieces and not all of us wish to decorate our homes with such pieces.

Be more strict when students misbehave. when a student is strugling you might consider assigning that student a student helper, and perhaps give the helper a little extra credit.

I enjoyed working with the clay on the wheel. It was a new experience for me and i liked it very much.

I liked working with the clay. I liked seeing at least a couple pieces get fired.

The course is taught very well by the professor and I would not suggest any changes to it.

Start firing the kilns the first week of class and fire both the bisque and high fire kilns at least once a week. Make some new glazes. Encourage all the students in the work that they do.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?

I enjoyed learning the different techniques to creating ceramic pieces.

The projects came in an array of forms, with different projects testing our capacity to learn and think outside of the box to complete the task. Many of the projects were unique to the course. One in particular were the construction of ocarina flutes. Overall, the course was very satisfying.

personally, i found this course a very fun and lively course!! it's great to wake up early in the morning lookinf forward to ceramics as my first thing to do because the course itself is fun and monika is awesome. my favorite activities were making flutes and using the extruder, making the ocarinas, making the mask, and glazing with the cone 10 glazes. i liked the monika had a set up a diverse amount of artwork we had to accomplish, and that she knew how to detail ceramics well. one of the techniques i learned was flattening the clay by hand, without the use of the roller.

What I liked about this course was actually learning about ceramics. It's so interesting and amazing how art can be created by a piece of clay. How people can create beautiful sculptures like animals, humans, etc... out of clay.

I loved that i could be be creative in making my pieces and unique as possible. the assignments were awesome and i really enjoyed doing the activities.

I definitely enjoyed all the hands on activities. Monika was very helpful when I needed her expertise.

The course was enjoyable with a relaxed atmosphere, important in a ceramics class so you can be inspired.

I loved this class. It was very relaxing and bought out the creative side of me. I am more of an outdoor kind of person and never thought I could actually be even a little artistic with my hands. Monika is an awesome teacher and very understanding. The projects that she gives have timely schedules. You have alot of time to finish one project and start on the next one without being rushed.

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

The instructor is a wonderful, creative artist with beautiful pieces. That being said, I'm concerned about her teaching. She needs to be better prepared.

I think the course should involve more glazing earlier in the semester after projects are bisque fired so there is no end of the year rush to glaze everything. The syllabus stated what we were going to learn but there should be more concrete deadlines. By having deadlines and having consequences for not following them, it will hopefully motivate students to meet all of the deadlines, allowing the class to move forward together with everyone on the same projects (this only occured in the last weeks of the semester).

what would have made this class better for me is if we had a longer period of time to work on the flutes and ocarinas because they require a certain amount of testing to find the right way to blow the holes, or even the right size to make the holes, and how many holes one can put on it (more so for the ocarina). when the intermediate ceramics class is available, i plan to enroll in it.

I don't think i have anything she has to improve she's done a good job so forth with making do with what she has .

Monica needs more modern equipment tools,kiln,etc. Had a massive backlog of pieces to be fired but could not because of limited time,space in kiln causing many pieces to not be completed. In my opinion even just a slight increase in her departments budget would do some real good. But a new modern electric kiln or maybe two would do wonders for her class. It would improve the learning experience tenfold.

There are not many classes that I can honestly say that don't need improvement but Monika's class does not need any improvements. She teaches her class well and is very fun to work with.

Monika was always readily available to help me further develop my understanding, awareness, and involvement in the ceramic arts. Monika was always available to help me both in and outside of class time. She's helped enrich my ceramics experience in Ceramics 105B: beginning handbuilding.

I loved absolutely everything about this course.

I loved everything about Monika's class. Her style and approach to teaching is very relaxed and comfortable making the learning process easy to achieve. Always a pleasure!

I love ceramics and more importantly I loved this class. I found this semester to be the most enjoyable out of any of the times I have taken ceramics because it has allowed me to challenge myself into making difficult pieces that allowed me to learn while making them. Over the course of the entire last year that I have been learning at HCC, Monika Mann has single handedly taught me more than the rest of my teachers combined. Please, allow me to list just a few of the lessons she has taught me. -She has taught me determination, and how to laugh at myself when I mess up. -She has taught me courage, the courage to do what I want to do, and what I feel is right to do. -She has taught me how to know when to give up, and not tuck tail and run, but to let things go in their own way and time. -She has taught me how to find simple joy in life again, by way of making art. -She has taught me to not take things too seriously, to let life go about and pull you along. -But most of all? Monika Mann has shown me my medium, by way of clay. My own element to push and pull to shape into something I desire. -She has taught me all of these through ceramics, by allowing me to make my own choices when it comes to my art. We all love you Monika, and you are the single best teacher I have ever had. You are talented, wonderful, amazing, and miraculous, and don't let anyone tell you different. it's a great class and Monika brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her students.

Ceramics is a hands on class therefore making it more enjoyable than a class of non stop lecturing. The students help make the class interesting with their individual ideas and creations.

I am so happy HCC has a ceramics program. Monika Mann is such an awesome instructor. She gives you all the tools you need to know about clay then she supports you in creative expression. She is Da Bes!!!!

as a repeat, non credit student, i was pretty much allowed to work independently, which works for me. i was able to set my own goals and work to accomplish them. Ms. Mann offered comments, criticism and alternate techniques.

New kilns!

The firing process should be an ongoing process so we can see our projects during the course of the semester instead of seeing the final glazed pieces at the end of the semester. Glazing should be taught the first month of the class so we can do the steps as we complete each project. The firing needs to be done in a timely fashion during the entire semester not rushed at the end of session

We had to come up with designs for some of the projects we were working on--patterns, pictures, decorations and the like. I wish we'd had more time to come up with them. Monika could have given us advance notice on the type of project we were going to be working on next, that way we'd have time to come up with a design. At least, that would have made it easier for me. Also, warning about the time frame of when it's too late to work with your clay (can't shape it, can't expand it, etc because it's too dry) would have been nice.

Very fun class this semester.

This is one of my favorite classes at HCC. I love walking into the ceramics studio,watching people "create" with clay, talking story and listening to music. It is such a pleasant enviornment. I think Monika handles many people coming at her all at once very well. She is an excellent artist and a patient and thoughtful teach, even when she makes her cute litte expressions with her face. She rocks!!!!!!

The clay pieces should be fired earlier with a glaze firing done a few weeks into the class so students can see some final results. The teacher needs to LEAD BY EXAMPLE cleaning up after herself and not count on the monitor to clean up her mess. Suggest a lab fee of $10. per student be charged to defray some of the propane cost...it was done in the past.

Monika has a very practical way of demonstrating techniques and types of hand building. She gives very clear instructions and works along side us to give us an example of what she is teaching. Her work is awesome and very inspiring. She is very supportive and encourages students to be creative and come up with ideas and questions. She is very knowledgeable and demonstrates all aspects of handbuilding, altering forms, glazing and firing.We tried a wide variety of hand building and were able to focus on areas of interest and learn from each other with Monikas' guidance.She also encouraged us to use the wide selection of books we have about ceramics and related fields.

Yes the teacher was very helpful i thought i could never make something nice out of clay because the original color was dull...But after we glazed our pieces i was amazed on how beautiful it all came out....

Very much so. I feel more confident to try new techniques and have expanded my ceramic vocabulary and feel more confident with a wide variety of under glazes, and low and high fire glazes and techniques such as scraffito.

Very Effective

She seems a little bit scatter brained - It is frustrating when I ask for her help or her professional advice, and then someone else comes and asks a question, and she goes to them. And so on. I have seen this happen with other students when they ask questions too, and she tries to do too many things at once. I often found myself waiting forever just for her to get back to me after helping three or four other people.

I enjoyed this class last semester and I enjoyed it even more this semester. So, I would not change anything.

to be honest i wouldnt change much maybe have a day twice a semester where all the students clean the studio top to bottom.

I would planned the firing schedule a little better, although end of semester came so fast!

If I were teaching this course students would have gone thru the entire process in the first month to see the end result and glaze choices. There should be definite calendar days for demos so that the student can aticipate what is to happen since our time is so important. The kiln should be fired as soon as the shelves fill with finished pieces so that the student can see their end result. The kilns were only in full operation at the end of the semester and as I write this the studio is full of unfired projects. The students should be accountable for cleaning their area and shared areas as well. Perhaps weekly monitors should be assigned..something has to be done to take care of this matter. After the instructor does a demo she should make sure she cleans up the area as an example for her students. It's hard to preach something you don't practice. There should be a raku firing every semester for an added experience for the students to show another option.

i would prepare a schedule of events, topics and STICK to it. For example, i might set aside the first hour of every week for a lecture and demonstration of a particular technique, then leave the rest of the time for student lab work; and be consistent so that they know they must be in class at least the first hour when demonstrations are done. Moreover, I would prepare materials and equipment ahead of time for these lecture/demonstrations; not take up class time for prep.

If I were teaching this course, I would have several assitants to help with different sections on the previous subjects of ceramics that I have instructed. For example: Hand building has a lot of sections that can be taught but would be hard to continue to help people with and at the same time continue to teach on new subjects such as wheel throwing. Having individuals who are familiar with the subjects would help to lessen her load as well as getting the information you need without disturbing the immediate instructor when she is teaching another subject. I am talking about volunteer helpers, cause I know the Hawcc can not pay them.

20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?

I think the teacher does a great job teaching different techniques and explaining why certain things happen with the clay when you use different techniques.

Monica is the best teacher i ever had

I think Ms. Mann is thee perfect art instructor. She absolutely supports and allows her students creative expression. Her sense of humor and disposition makes the class a comfortable place for great work to happen!

I think she and her teaching methods are superior!

The instructor is an artist and lacks teaching skills and planning, does not carry thru with her ideas, leaving students frustrated and sometimes let down. She sometimes shows her emotions on her sleeve, needs to treat all the students the same.

Ms. Mann is a great and skilled artist and ceramicist, but is highly unorganized, such that an orderly learning experience of basic techniques of ceramics is not adequately taught. The instructor is easily distracted by interesting techniques and which are taught on the spur of the moment.

Monica is a hard nose, sweet atimes, know her stuff-instructor. Her teaching methods portray her own personality, as in detail, beauty and creativity.

Pottery, both handbuilding and wheelhrowing depends upon a specific sequence of actions in order to go from raw clay to a finished product. Students, particularly beginning students need to understand this process, whether it is coiling, slab-making, slip molding, wheelthrowing, etc. It goes from working with raw materials, forming the product, drying, bisque firing, glazing, glaze firing to finished product. If these steps are not taught and done in a timely fashion, the tail end (a finished product) does not get completed until after the semester is over. This has happened for several semesters. There are consequences. 1) How is the student graded when the products are not completed through no fault of the student. 2) How are students to learn glazing and testing of glazes on clay, if this is not taught till the last weeks of the semester. 3) Ceramics, like other arts, is a learning by doing sort of skill, how can a student even evaluate his own work without a completed product until perhaps the next semester or not at all. 4) Where is the intrinsic reward for a student if he/she is unable to see what he has done? Isn't this what real learning is about?

I loved everything about this class!

Since this course is not necessarily academic but, rather artistic in its content I do not feel I would know how to improve or change it. I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the class, it was my favorite this semester, and everything that I learned about ceramic hand building.

I appreciated Monika's teaching style. She presented all the information, wisdom, and knowledge she has about clay in an open, honest, and non-threatening way. Non-threatening because, as a truly good teacher/instructor does, she was able to convey her expertise without making me feel like a novice. The energy at the ceramics studio is very comfortable, fluid, and supportive of artistic expression. I attribute this to Monika and her teaching sensitivity.

Monika ia a really interesting teacher. she is fun and goofy and that makes the class not so boring. she has a friendly personality and that erases the teacher-and-student boundary. she lets you do your work at your own pase os you feel no pressure to finish on time. she fits perfectly to be an art teacher.

Monika is the kind of instructor that really gets to the point, no bs and get things done. She is very thorough in her teaching and helping to get one to understand what she/he is doing and not doing. Besides being a to the point teacher, Monika can be very comical and just breaks all the ice inside of the classroom. She knows her stuff and teaches with passion and a lot of creativity.

Monika Mann clearly has so much experience with ceramics. She shows us just enough to let our creativity shine, and is always available to help even outside of regular class hours. Monika is very passionate about us doing our best work and seeing great results as artists. I love this course and will be taking another ceramics next semester!

I have gained a lot of benefit from taking this course. I got an immense satisfaction from creating a piece of artwork that is beautiful and functional. Even though I am choosing a career in science it's wonderful to know that I could pursue a career in art if I wanted to. I really enjoyed the class alot!! Although, it would have been nice if the bookstore would sell mini ribbon tools! ;) It makes scraffito so much easier!

Nothing she was perfect. I would not change anything.

I would have it be a different thing each week, it got borring at times because it was the same thing for two weeks. Would have like to see more demonstrations on harder pieces.

The only thing I would try to do is introduce students to the different types of glazes a bit earlier.

I thought she was exstremly nice but too laid back. Keeping track of schedule would have been nice, I like to have more structure in classes and know exactly what I'm doing.

I feel as though she was stretched thin when having to attend to the other students that were not in our class. Material and equiptment should be ment for the class that is scheduled at that time.

I think the teacher methpds are so so good, she did have a lot of good ideas and things for us to be working on. But i just think next time she would set us down and explane the rules on throwing and what is the RIGHT steps. She did tell us some rlues on throwing but not all!

I feel the class time should follow the rest of the school and that the final class meeting be held during finals week. Our class schedule seems much shorter then all the previous years, and the length of class has been cut by an hour. Wet clay days end much to early. The firing of items need to start earlier in the semester....we need to have more firings. I repeat WE NEED TO HAVE MORE FIRINGS. All in all......Monika brings with her an abundance of knowledge...and opens my eyes to many wonderful ways to do clay.

Begin on time. BE PREPARED to do demonstrations. Be available and approachable during class time for assisting students. Don't be so emotional. Use of the full instruction time (we ended our projects in early November leaving alot of us with nothing to do) The class seemed to be geared toward a ceramic sale in early December rather than instruction time for the students. We had no class meeting time during finals week.

More structured classes with defined requirements and responsibilities for the students.

Ms. Mann has excellent ceramic skills and a wonderful artist however, she lacks teaching skills and some patients. She does seem to rely on some of the students that have been in the class before and they help somewhat with instructing other students and some even tell us what to do. My thought is who is the instuctor?

She's a good teacher. Her teaching methods are very hands on.
