15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Make class more interesting; more games, etc.
He is cool. More hula classes! hahhaaha
I think that the course is awesome and insightful, I have learned a lot from it however, I think it would be nice if he was specific with the homeworks and readings for the class, especially the readings because I find myself confused, but then again maybe that's just me.
Perhaps try to get the class to participate more. I know its not entirely up to the teacher because some people just dont want to participate...but try to get the class to work in groups or something.
Teacher needs to work on being more sensitive. Sometimes he came off as being sexist.
Very enthusiastic about course material. Made sure everyone understood what he was talking about before he would move on to another subject/chapter.
Have a word bank on the tests, as a student who is not very familiar with many Hawaiian words it makes the tests much harder when there is no word bank to go off of during certain parts of the test.
Such a funny teacher and made the course material relatable to our everyday lives so that we were able to understand much easier. Excellent teacher and would love to take more classes from! No suggestions. Everything was great!
I understand this is "Hawaiian Studies" but the amount of Hawaiian terms and names your expected to know isn't something half the native hawaiians from here know. Tone it down a little bit when it comes to exams this isn't the only class were taking and I'll never use this again...
No suggestion; I like his current method.
1-Upload the lecture slides after each class.
The readings are rather lengthy and boring, although they are very relatable to the topics discussed in class.
Keep on doing what you've always done.

Great course!
None applicable.
Make the lectures more interesting. Less readings. More reviewing before exams.
To improve the course, Kumu Ryan should get the students more involved. For example the class when everyone learned hula. Activities like that make the class more interested.
Assignments to get involved with the literature like a crossword puzzle. Lost interest in reading towards the end of the semester.

I thought just taking notes all the time got a repetitive, but I honestly don't know how else you could keep convey so much information. Other than that you showed wonderful knowledge of your subject which you conveyed to us your students.
The only thing I would change would be the exams that he gives. They are really long and they literally cover all of the information that we went over during that section of the course. Maybe make them a little bit shorter.
The map quizzes and number of blogs (6) was reasonable.
I enjoyed his class but the duration of it dragged on. A lot of the information was very interesting but it was a lot to take in.
16. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher, very knowledgable.
Excellent teacher.
My Kumu was an awesome teacher and he really knows his stuff, the material was covered but I think he moves a little bit too fast, I feel like he just wants to cover most of the material instead of us trully understanding the material. Overall he is funny and I learned a few things from him as my teacher.
Very knowledgeable and makes learning very fun and interesting without losing focus of the main points.
Good teacher, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about subject.
Great teacher. Reasonable amount of work.
Good teacher, tests are maybe too difficult for the amount of information covered in class
an excellent teacher who knows his material and know exactly how to relate and teach the material to his students.
Seems like a great person and very passionate in what he teaches. But the tests are rather ridiculous.
Class was fun. Reasonable teaching. Did not like the first third of the class though with all the Hawaiian words.
Splendid Kumu. I learned a lot over the course of the semester. I could feel his passion about the topic all the while trying to be objective and allow for his students to make their own decisions based on the information that was passed.
Less biased approach to subject matter. Play devils advocate for once when approaching material.
Excellent teacher, makes you appreciate the Hawaiian culture a lot more than you previously did.
excellent! He is a knowledgable professor and always has something fun to say. He makes class that can be boring, not be boring!
excellent
I usually don't like talking in front of people and am almost always silent in class, even when I know the answer. I just plain don't like talking in front of people. However, Kumu Keola asked questions and began discussions that I was actually passionate and interested in. I actually spoke up in class. And I know to some this is no big deal, but for me it is. We discussed topics that related to us in the present as well as linking us to the past. I really appreciate this course and Kumu Keola
Knowledgeable professor. Although too much content to deliver for a 100 level course. The exams were extremely challenging.
Great teacher, makes learning relevant and interesting!
Kumu Keola is a wonderful teacher who is passionate about what he does.
I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. I learned a lot from his class and he made it very interesting.
Pretty good. Very knowledgeable about what he's teaching, but just needs to work on incorporating the class in the discussion. A lot of the material is dry (that's why).
He is funny and an enjoyable teacher. He is not boring, but should try tp grab student attention more rather than just reading slides.
Needs to be more professional when speaking about controversial topics.
He is a good teacher with a lot of knowledge, funny, and makes class interesting.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic, and lets you know whats happening.
Professor Ryan is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Hawai'i and it's history. His exams aren't easy but they are not hard either if you pay attention. He encourages you to think about what is being discussed and approach this topic from a view not many usually see. I really enjoyed this class!
I really did enjoy this class and the way that he taught it. It was a long class and I had it from 3- 4:15pm which was really late in the day. Somehow he was able to keep us from falling asleep and made all the material interesting. He was very outgoing and was able to present the information in a manner that we all would listen. I would give him a 9 out of 10.
Kumu Keola is a passionate teacher whom I would take another class for (if he taught other subjects).
he is a great and passionate teacher.

Best class ever. Even if i hardly go. hahahaha
It would be nice if we had more inside activities like group activities and group discussion.
Loved learning about Hawaiian history. Made everything more clear as to why I love coming here!
Your a great teacher.
Keep up the good work!
He asked me how old I was. I laughed a lot.
Great job!
Good class, cool teacher. Just a lot of hard work.
