This is an online course and I feel that 20/hrs a week or more depending on the assignments for the week.

Many people said that students should do eight hours a week to the course work outside of class.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

The information that he gives us and the examples. I like that he engages us with the peers on the online course. It makes us really think more about what we put into it.

This was the first online course that I have ever taken. I liked how each week we covered a new section in both writing poetry and short stories. Each week would expand upon what was learned from the week before. It was well structured and informational.

Very well structured assignments and enjoyable to work with.

His attitude, the course structure was the best I have seen.The content and definitely making it all fun to learn, pushing the limits.

I found the resources, course work, and presentations valuable.

I was able to turn in most of my assignments when I chose to as long as it was by the end of the week. I culd create my own schedule for this class.

He does a wonderful job with organizing this online class. I can tell he spends a lot of time grading and analyzing students work. I had one teacher that had to change due dates for some assignments up to 3 times.

It is very well taught.

I really enjoy his class. He makes us really think about several things before you really figure out what you really want to really write about.

He is a great teacher, full of insight, experience, and understanding. I enjoyed his class.

I think that I'm personally a fast writer and spent a good 8-10 hours writing every week if I did all of the exercises and papers. 10-15 for each week of the research paper module.

Writing has taught me how to get in touch with my feelings.

It was fun finding out facts in my research paper. You as a professor make the process of learning over long distance easy by being so understanding with the constant weekly updates and timely emails.

14. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

I found that responding to others work was to encourage discussion, but by then end of the course it was just busywork to me. On one hand I enjoyed reading alternatives to the module/paper I just did, but the process of giving critical feedback as a peer seemed almost rude, the only thing I wanted to do was support whatever was written. I also think that the laulima way of posting in a forum was hard to navigate. You gave clear instructions but I wished that certain topics (anything requesting our input on a story etc.) were on a thread with the topic created by you, and all of the comments from the entire class easily viewable underneath instead of on however many individual threads.

Mr. VanAmburgh is a great teacher and is always willing to help

Awesome. I only wish I had been more on top of dates (like when I was a few hours late for the midterm). The course was fluid and your responses and grading were helpful. You made the reading and writing heavy Eng 100 class into something accessible to me 5,000 away. Thanks!

as many as can especially when inspiration strikes..use it!

Well, since this class was online, I would say that I did about 3-5 hours a week of work.

This is the kind of class that requires full attention and participation just to keep up. When one is in full compliance with what the instructor is expecting; a genuine sense of accomplishment comes with our efforts. Class peers are encouraged to interact and critiqe each others' work; this is a useful technique for teaching by learning. In hours each day a minimum of three is required for me to feel caught up.

6 to 8 hours on course work

I would say about 5 to 6 hours a day.

I would say that I devoted about 5-10 hours a week in writing essays, reading and contributing to our class discussions.

Atleast 6 to 8 hours.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

Module structure

I found the peer editing to be valuable, but probably the most valuable would be the teachers response's to our papers.

I already write fairly well as a 66 year old man; this class helped me to get on track to becoming a really good writer. The way the instructor asked us to stretch ourselves and use the more than plentiful resources to improve our skills I found to be both exhausting and very worth while. The whole idea of deadlines, thinking, and research put enough pressure on me to cause my best qualities to come to light. "I enjoyed this class a lot."

the way Prof. Van Amburgh was so personal and the way he went out of his accommodate each students specific needs. As for me my computer had some program issues, to where I was only able to view PDF files, and unable to view any Word DOCs. As soon as I informed him of this issue he began posting PDF's as well as word formats so that I was able to view them. Also his detailed comments on all of our returned assignments was very helpful to me.

Reminders, by email, and showing what need to be done step by step.

It was very easy to follow and I actually learned a lot about writing, our teacher was hands-on and very nice, it was easy to communicate through email and the chat room and the essay examples that he would post helped a lot.

The introduction of different types of essays and the many examples And activities to practice them. What I also found valuable and helpful about this course is that mr. Van Amburgh interacted with his students unlike my other class where in the beginning of the semester the teacher posts ALL assignments with due dates. Mr. Van amburgh posts assignments weekly.

Everything is valuable because Todd seems to assist us with whatever help we need to finish each assignment. The private messages to him really helps and he's always online to answer our questions. He's an awesome teacher!

maybe have the gradebook up sooner...i just like to see where a am from day one, otherwise everything was perfect!

The blog section on Laulima could be set up better so that a person doesn't have to sift through the entries, when people are behind on assignments, to make comments on the most recent posts. Chat room exercises involving writing partners don't work. I never had one response from my peers that were chosen for me to work with. It's difficult enough to get this kind of participation in a real classroom, even more so online when making this kind of assignment that pairs a responsible person with someone who is not.

The only improvement that I would want to see would be a faster return of written papers.

Mr. VanAmburgh is already an expert and since I'm not; I would have no idea of how to suggest any improvements.

By keep the interaction with your students and keep doing what you doing because it helped me a lot on not procrastinating. His deadlines for assignments kept me on task knowing what to expect in following weeks

I feel that there is no room for improvement. He is always there to help!

15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

He has the right formula to create a comforting safe inspiring virtual classroom.

The instructor, Mr. van Amburgh is well versed on the subject, accommodating engaging,and fair.

He did a great job being very clear and to the point in all of our homework assignments.

My personal opinion of him as a person and teacher is that he's a genius. He is also a deeply feeling human with many of the finest attributes that a truly good man can have. "He should be cloned!"

He's an awesome teacher, he knows what he's talking about, he knows how to make you understand what he's talking about, and he's great at what he does. TWO THUMBS UP!!!

A great teacher, easy to work with, and has helped me develop my writing skills. Mostly, he as help me be more creative and mind opening.

My overall evaluation of Mr. Van Amburgh is that he was the best teacher overall I ever had in college. I learned so much and will recommend him to other students

He does such a wonderful job with all the assignments and he responds to me quickly! He is a wonderful teacher for English and I love how creative the activities get. He is neat and well organized with all of his work that he presents to us. He is never too hard on us so that's what makes us keep our own pace and strive to become better at writing and reading. Overall, he has done a great job teaching me to become a better writer!

16. Other comments:

One thing that could be said about this course that's not accounted for here is: The question above concerning whether or not the instructor offered enough help. It should be said that: This is not the kind of class that the teacher would help individuals to the point of making them dependent om the teacher; rather this class teaches the student how to rely on their own best perceived interests and resources. To do other wise would cripple a student. So for that reason: I don't think question #7 above is appropriately asked. Why? Because the very nature of becoming a good writer involves observing the details and then deciding what is meant or implied in the general instructions. This searching process is why this is the best English course I have ever found and Mr. VanAmburgh is the best teacher I have ever worked with.

If I needed to take ENG 100 again I would register for his class again in a heartbeat.

Thank you Mr. Van Amburgh for all you have taught me this semester I will take what I have learned in your class with me to my next english course, that is if I do pass english 100. :). I truely had a blast and can't believe it's practically over! With much aloha, carvana dela cruz

4. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

What I found that was valuable and helpful for me was a teacher who is always there for his students. The course is very enjoyable making it fun to learn.

The writing assignments were varied and allowed lots of room for personal creativity while learning various ways to write an essay.

This teacher thoughtfully prepared the curriculum. His assignments clearly indicated a desire to impart meaning, depth and true learning to his students (no busy work). He makes himself available should his already crystal-clear instructions not be enough. His buoyant, cheerful spirit make learning a joy.

That we could ask other student's as well as the teacher if we had any questions.

Todd Van Amburgh included audio recordings giving important instructions in the beginning. It was nice to hear Todd's human voice teaching. It made the on line experience a little less estranged from human interaction.

I can't think of a single way in which this class could be improved. I am beyond satisfied in every regard, and would enthusiastically recommend this class and teacher.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

When my friends or family ask me how I am doing in school, my face light up with a smile while I tell them how great my English teacher is. I thank you Mr. VanAmburgh for having patience, structure and understanding on teaching your students. Having structure helped me to complete my assignments on time without being rushed, but pushed enough to succeed on my own. Each week that passes by, I walk away with knowledge that I able to retain and share. Most of all what I can honestly take away from this course and will remember for the rest of my life is not learning the mechanics of a sentence in writing English, but finding and writing my ideas and emotions. When you finally see your feelings and thoughts on paper in more than eight hundred words, is truly amazing!! Well, at least for me it is. It's a huge accomplishment and I thank you for taking me on that journey of my own self discovery.

Todd Van Amburgh is an excellent teacher with lots of passion for writing. His enthusiasm is very motivating. His attention to detail, clear instructions, and innovative lesson plans made this class work.

I will highly recommend Todd Van Amburgh as an excellent teacher.

I wish Mr. Van Amburgh would teach other teachers how to teach. Like my nutrition teacher, ugh! This is how college classes are supposed to look. I am a better person for having taken this class. My skills are stronger. I'm more aware of areas I need to continue working on. The materials were appropriate, fun and interesting. The teacher was responsive, caring, professional. Perfect! Give him a raise.

I recommend him to all the future ENG100 students!

That I could ask him any question I had when it came to a difficult assignment even though it was online he made time to answer it quickly.

The workload

I was able to express myself through essays we did and I did not have to think hard. I let my ideas flow freely.

I love how he would give us useful powerpoint presentations and fun assignments. The essay topics were fun and we had ample time to write and revise our essays. Overall I really enjoyed this online class. He would always give us great comments on our work and give us ways to improve our essays and he would always respond to emails/questions fast. Great teacher!

I found that almost every time I was online Mr.VanAmburgh was online. So I was always able to send him a message if I needed help with something.

Having to learn to see things and think 'outside the box.'

The smart thinking tutoring. Also, the activities and assignments helped me become a better writer.

I never liked writing and while taking this online course, all I did was write. This course and his curriculum made it easy for me to enjoy writing. I found another way to express myself-thru writing. I've learned a great deal that will take me far. I enjoyed sharing and reading my peers work as well. I learned to created blogs, and just free-write. From hating writing to now enjoying writing, this was a very valuable course for me.

I liked the different ways we could submit our work. I really liked the grade book link so I could see if I needed to step it up with my work.

That I was able to keep up with the class and understand the assignments because it was well detailed.

I thought it was fine!

I truly enjoyed this course. It was my first online class and found it to be very organized, detailed, and user friendly. Todd was a great teacher, very understanding, knowledgeable and helpful when I needed help. Great class!

Mr. VanAmburgh is doing an awesome job teaching. He was fair and made encouraged me to just try my best. I really enjoyed having him as my teacher.

While doing peer editing any essays, that we can be able to see the mistakes we need to change and it could be easier to fix the problem instead of the teacher showing us.

he is a good teacher because he is well organized on the things he is looking for. All the assignments were always made on Monday and only essays due on Wednesdays. I have no objection to his teaching.
