| This course is AWSOME!! Mrs.Scheffler uses various methods of teaching including videos, powerpoints, guest speakers, excursions, field studies, reports, and activities. The different methods gave me a chance to better understand the course content and I was able to understand my work. I enjoyed all the hands on activites done in this course. THANK YOU!!!!! |

| I liked alot about this course. Especially the projects. It lets me as a student go out and learn about the environment like it's part of my everyday life. An example is something simple, like going to the beach and see the amount of impact we as humans place on the environment. |
| I like Mela's positive attitude that she brings to every class. She also makes a lot of effort to help student succeed, such as extra credit. |
| Everything.The learning material and the book had a lot of interesting stuff for the whole world to grasp. |
| This class was excellent. Dr. Scheffler's lectures and assignments were knowledgeable, engaging and thought provoking. The text book was very informative, full of interesting information and easily understood. One thing I enjoyed most about this course was that the material often made me think about the subject matter and continues to help me develop a sense of responsibility towards our communities and environment. |
| I liked having hands on learning. Also letting use choose our own topics on projects made it more
interesting for me because i got to researched and learn more about what i liked. |

| This course mostly consisted of field trips. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent learning outdoors, being able to see, hear, smell, touch and sometimes taste the environment and ecosystems we were studying. |

| I really liked that this online course took advantage of the ning site. It provided a wonderful place to share ideas and information as well as getting to know the other students, which is hard to do in most online courses. Exposure to new things like the Scratch program I thought was also a good use of the media available. I also liked the attitude of the instructor and think that it made for a good experience. |
| The only thing I liked was the Newsshare idea because we got to discover how the environmental
science concepts are affecting the real world. However, I didn't like that the article had to be less
than a week only otherwise it would receive no credit. As long as the article isn't from 10 years ago,
I don't understand why an article couldn't be from a couple of weeks ago. I don't think that was
necessary or fair. |

14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

| A couple structure issues came up over the course of the semester. With the open-ish format, a good idea in my opinion, but it could use a couple tweaks. I would say open all chapter quizes/tests from day one to allow the online student to be free to work at their own pace and the freedom to learn the material in any order. Use the discussion boards and newshare as a way to guide the students with their weekly participation. Add folders to the newshare ap, it did get a little confusing at times to sort through all that was there to make sure I had completed what I needed to do. Maybe break down the six part questions for each discussion board and use this to keep each disussion going for the whole of the semester. Might make for troublesome grading, but I think it would help keep each issue alive until the end of the term. I think that by starting with one question and then adding a new question along those same lines each week would also help the discussion, rather than the 'I have two hours to make a post before the section closes,' as many students did. It was sad because many of the points made in the fianl two minutes were good and would have been nice to actually discuss. I would probably make the all the exams available for the final week. But then again, for a 100 level course usually the focus is on basic concepts and vocabulary and I got more out of the course than that. |
| The course was extremely disorganized and difficult to follow. In the beginning of the semester, we
were given upward of 6 weeks to complete the module. This infrequency actually made me lose track
of the course. The times that assignments were due were all over the place, so that also made the
course more stressful because I never knew when something would be due. The assignments also
got pretty repetitive as there was no creativity in coming up with assignments (except for a sparse
few). All we did was take the quiz, post to the discussion and find an article. The presentation and
presentation reviews were the most interesting portion of the course, and I wish it were worth more,
and the discussions and opinion of other's discussions were worth less. I also thought the Scratch
game would have been a good idea, except it refused to work on my computer. |
| It would have been nice to read the chapters for extra credit that were not
required or covered in the modules. It also would have been nice for you to
give us more detailed directions for projects of scratch program and power-
point presentation. I know it was only your first class online, and it was
much disorganized, as opposed to the may other online classesI have done.
It also would have been easier if students had shorter time to get a
chapter done in a module becasue they would respond sooner and give the
rest of the class opportunities of responding and interacting on the
discussions. Not cool to have our discussions graded differently throughout
the semester, confusing. Need stability in online classes, structure. I
felt like I was jumping around a lot in this class. In the last discussions
if we dont have three other students respond then half our grade is gone,
not cool. How bout if they do respond, then we get extra points, not cool
to lower grade though.
The quizes sucked. Very impersonal and tricky. Hard to get good scores on
them, no matter how much I studied. I have never had that problem in any of
my classes. |
| Pamela appeared very knowledgeable in her area of expertise and I respect her tremendously. I respect any teacher who can lecture without looking in a book. Her information came right out of her head and it was meaty. Pamela knows her stuff and has the personality to draw you in even if it's not your favorite subject. It sure wasn't mine. I did though enjoy learning about the environmental state of our planet. Her lab was great but her online class was horrid. Though she know her material, she overloaded me with so much that I retained almost nothing. As a 100 level course, she should have simplified the class. If she would have given us less work we would have gotten a lot more out of the class. I say we because I am not alone in the matter. |
| Make it not so work intensive. Between discussion post and replies, news posts and replies, assignments, exams, presentations, critiquing five classmates presentations, reading the chapters, power points and other media to augment the book, programming a video game, jumping back and forth from ning to laulima, and surveys, other classes, a job, and a family with two kids, an easy class was made difficult to keep up with. |

| At times the course load seemed very heavy and at other it seemed almost nonexistent. But we were warned about it and this strategy provides something along the lines of real world work experience as some days you really have a lot to do and other days are pretty lax, but I could see this as potentially hazardous for many students with other course loads being equally intense at the same times. As a student I was very satified with what I recieved for my money and would recommend this course for anyone first stepping into the world of the natural sciences. |
| I didn't like the use of the Ning site. It made the class confusing and unprofessional. I would much
rather keep all of the work on Laulima or a professional textbook website where it belongs. I didn't
join the class to be "friends" with people. |

| Mrs. Scheffler had helped me a lot through out this course and semester. I
came across some difficult health issues and Mrs. Scheffler was very
understanding through it all. She was very sincere about it and it made this
course a little bit more easy for me to deal with.

She is difficult to communicate with, short tempered, over bearing, raises her voice frequently and was frequently disorganized with her field assignments. during one field trip she took our class into an area of the national park that was off limits/kapu and when I declined to continue following her and instead returned to the parking area to wait until she returned she yelled at me and called me a child. Really? I am 50 years old and respectful of the law. can provide more info if it is wanted. sorry but this is the only time in my school career that I have had a bad experience with an instructor. lori |

| Not being only on fridays. We missed many class periods because of Holidays. I think we missed many opportunites to do more because of this. Along these same lines I think that with the way the course was taught it could benefit by longer class periods or another meeting day. I am sure this wouldnt happen because of credit hours and whatnot, but the only way to make it better would be to have more of it. |

| The excursions to different farms, parks and the ocean and incorporating that into our education and learning was very interesting and helpful. I really enjoyed the aquaphonics. The course work and assignments including our projects gave me the understanding of Science and why it is important to understand what our Earth and environment is going through. | I wouldnt do anything to improve the course. |
| For most of my classes, the structure of assignments are usually given to us before we turn the assignment in. For example, the interview project only had one main criteria; it had to be 3 pages long. So if one of us did this assignment on time, and it was 3 pages long, then they should have got an A. The midterm was very similar in the way that no one really knew what to expect. Now the midterm is over and since we don't really have to be tested on it again, I won't go back and review what I should have known. Then again, if we had a more narrow idea on what to study, the test may have been to easy. The video thing was different, kind of like this could have been a online class. That is pretty much all I got. As far as all the activities and classroom discussions, this class was awesome, and I learned a lot. |

| I know it wasn't Mela's fault for this class set-up being faulty, but if I were teaching this course, I would definitely get rid of all of those videos! The videos were so hard to understand because it was over my head and it was super long! I would do more in-class presentations and powerpoints to get my lesson across to the students. |

| This course felt like it was being taught by the professor on the videos which was extremely boring |
| For future classes, the professors should be able to decide what they should or shouldn't use to teach the class. In this case, Mela' couldn't take out the videos from the lesson or substitute it with something else. The whole class struggled trying to understand the content and it showed in the test scores. I was very disappointed with my grades, especially since I tried really hard to watch all the videos and take good notes.
Maybe if we have to watch the videos, notes and class discussions should be allowed during the tests. Or, maybe the tests could be edited to reflect what we covered.
Another suggestion would be to hand out review sheets that explain what will be on the quizzes so that we can be better prepared to take them. Writing all of these essay questions on the quiz was stressful. |
| I loved this class because of the teacher. It was unfortinate that she could not stray from the class set up because many of us found the online videos to be boring, at times hard to hear and conflicting within themselves. Overall I enjoyed the class and would take it again from this teacher. She is always available to us, accomodating and encourageing. |

I also learned that I shouldn't take a Lab class without taking the main class with it. I feel like I am constantly behind and unprepared. Having the type of questions that you have to fill in makes it hard to really grade. Sometimes you may have a hard time remembering the exact words or definitions of words, but if you see it, you would know. Also, how do you grade everyone's tests if each person has a totally different answer? |

| Maybe some things that could be changed is to have the assignments clearly provided. Sometimes there were some confusion on what was due, when it was due, and sometimes papers were missed because we weren't aware we had to write one (ex: the volcano paper).
There were sometimes that I had questions and had my hand up, but I guess you didn't see me or you were too busy to look up.
One recommendation for the presentation portion would to have it in the computer room with the updated computer and huge projector.
I had a great time in this class and I'm sad this semester is coming to an end. I have learned so much and I am now looking at my own life to see what I can do to help the planet and my community. There are a lot of things I didn't know before this class, and now I'm able to teach my family what I learned, such as recycling, overfishing, biodiversity, etc. |
