She knows her stuff!!! she makes learning fun and gives many examples to help you in class. She is always available if you need help.

She is one of the few instructors who are willing to communicate with students. She doesn't like students calling her professor. I assume it is because the title may make students feel the gap. She is very approachable, kind, resourceful and wealth of knowledge of her field.

She's very, very smart, but doesn't make you feel pressured or belittle you in any way as other teachers do. She is really nice and understanding and always does what ever she can for you to better understand the material.

Provided some humor in the class while teaching what was needed to be taught. Explains the philosophers way better than just reading the papers.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Philosophy is really difficult to comprehend and with the right effort and the right encouragment all of her students can see how beautiful of a world philosophy can show us.

She helped everone in class, and made learning fun. I loved her lectures and study guides! She is really funny and entertaining.

Yes she showed a fantastic concern for the well being of her students and is a genuinly great human being to have on earth.

by helping them with any major problems with school work, and took of personal time to teach students, awsome!!

YES YES YESSSS!!! SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD.all I have to say is TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

She is a very patient and kind person and she brought malasadas that had cream in em and i mean they were really memorable so yeah she's awsome.

18. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Since philosophy has layers of understanding to comprehend perhaps actually showing us this is what this person meant exactly. I mean if a student asks there should be a response that the student can comprehend to gain a further understanding of the material. She wanted too much for us to understand everything for ourselves but we really needed her to lay it out for us. Otherwise we should just read it on our own and never have a deeper understanding of the material.

Explaining philosophy to people with limited interest and intellect is always difficult so she did cater her excectations to that of the class.

She is really nice and is a very enthusiastic professor and lecturer. Too bad she teaches such a profoundly complex class.

I dont like the way intro philosophy classes are set up at KCC. This is the second time I am taking PHIL 100 because the first time I withdrew from the class because i very confused about the class and did not like how the course was set up. Julia is a very good teacher, just the way the course was set up I found a bit confusing. I took a philosophy class in high school and found that it was one of the best classes I could take. It was college prep course. It made philosophy which can be a very difficult subject to understand at times very accessible and opened up my mind to many new ideas and ways of though. If I did not take that class I would have probably been lost in this philosophy course

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Julia is a very understanding, very friendly and social, which made it easy for me to communicate with her openly, and ask questions when they came up! She knows her stuff and as uncooperative as our class got at times, she did all she could to hold us together and work with us to make class as productive as possible! She is an awesome teacher!!!

She's a fantastic teacher. Extremely knowledgeable and has a great way of explaining things. She is very passionate and animated and makes learning Philosophy a lot of fun.

She's really kind and all around awesome!

Julia Morgan's strengths as a teacher are that she is very outgoing and easy to understand.

Julia is a very inspiring and friendly teacher to be around. Sitting in class, it feels as if we were being taught by one of our classmates with a considerable knowledge in her field instead of a regular boring professor. Our class discussions are the spotlight of the course, and with the combination of Julia's open attitude and the unique variety of our peers i found the course to be very interesting =).

She is very lively and personable. She respects everyone and is very fair.

She talked to us, not at us.

One of her major strengths is getting students to participate. She is really easy going in class. Students are able to connect with Julia.

She has a very good personality. She is very approachable and will not make you feel uncomfortable. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject matter. She uses a lot of group activities which in my opinion really helped the class to learn. She is very funny and smiley.

She is a very friendly and fun teacher making class more fun than work. She, generally, picks great primary sources with much importance.

Very knowledgeable in Philosophy, very energetic. Encourages group debates and discussing in groups. Had some interesting guest speakers.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Maybe to start the course off the way we decided to recently--by splitting up the readings so that each student had less to read (because at times it was overwhelming...) but as students, we would still need to be responsible for our part, in comprehending the readings and bringing it to class, in our own words and understandings.

Maybe use more powerpoints, her handwriting isn't the best and its hard to keep up with her in class especially when I'm trying to take notes and listen to her at the same time, I find myself losing track of what she just said. Powerpoints are great not only for us but for her.

I suggest maybe to do more power point presentations so we are able to clearly understand what it is your explaining.

Somethings i felt as if we were just jumping from subject to subject with the previous subject feeling unfinished.

Be more organized with assignments, readings and class time. We always ran out of time and no one ever read the readings. If she was stricter or had more assignments, we might be able to grasp the concepts more.

I would add more in- class projects and group assignments.

Schedule was not clear. Readings, hard to find. I felt having research paper and final exam is too much work for 100 level class.

This is purely constructive criticism with no personal attacks and solely based on my ideal style of learning. I would suggest more organization. Start with a foundation, the base of philosophy. Then move, in an organized way from topic to topic building on each to explain the next. Allow for more standard learning ie lecture and notes. While Hawaiian is a major interest of yours, try to incorporate more examples from all walks of life. Philosophy 101 is not a Hawaiian class. And also try not to bring up so many issues with race. ie "the white man" "the natives". Talking constantly about race only accents the fact that there are differences, it's like picking a scab.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She always asked what she could do to help us, or she would ask ways we could make class run smoother. I think a lot of our class was very lazy and uncooperative and really tried to work Julia in giving the least amount of work; but she definitely did her part to help improve our class as a whole!

She is always available to help students,during class time and after hours. She is very fair and treats all her students equally. She would make sure everyone was involved in class discussions so no one would fall behind.

She showed concern by having review sessions before every exam and having a lot of extra credit opportunities.

Julia asked each and everyone of us what we wanted on the first day of class. She is very interactive and conscious on the needs of students.

She had extended office hours, provided lots of extra credit opportunities and would always answer questions thoroughly.

She created opportunities for extended study sessions outside of class.

She constantly updated Laulima so we would always know what we would have to do. She would consult us as students as to how we think we could learn more effectively.

I would highly recommend Julia as she is a wonderful person and a fantastic teacher.She is very smart and you can learn a lot from her.

21. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

To be honest, our class went on a lot of tangents, mainly because of the students--coming into class unfocused, without doing our assignments, and just beating around the bush basically. Julia is not at fault at all for this; our class just rarely got seriously focused and when we would start to settle down, someone would come up with a random idea or question or statement that would throw a lot of us off. It was a challenging class because of the range students...to say the least. There were students that took assignments and discussions seriously and were effective in asking questions and answering others that came up--then there were those that were completely opposite; uninterested, bored, lazy and borderline disruptive.

I learned to feel very comfortable speaking in front of the class. Julia provided an atmosphere in which I could do so easily.

I liked some of the primary sources and found them to be a good addition to my knowledge and a few discussions really engaged the whole class.

I think learning about the different kinds of philosophers and their teaching about life and decision was interesting. It's very deep.

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

It's a tough course with a lot of reading. The key is just to stay on top of the readings so that you can question Julia on anything you didn't quite understand. She's guaranteed to clear it up for you.

To improve this class maybe you could do less group projects and also do more power point presentations.

This course would be better if we covered the material in class, then had a take home assignmet.

I fell that she does a pretty outstading job as it is.

More organization. More focus.

I really do like the improvement of separating the readings between the class.

I really do hope that all goes well for you at Hilo and with your doctorate. And please do not take this too much to heart. I do not adapt well to the new types of teaching and learn better in a classic academic setting. I do though enjoy your energy and hope that students at Hilo do too. Good luck Julia!
