12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

I found the reading material voluminous, and interesting, but the on-line discussions proved to be more valuable as I was able to share my thoughts and opinions, and, at the same time, read the different viewpoints and perspectives shared by fellow classmates. The flexibility to do the course work on your own time. Also the flexibility to choose which discussion board posts I could respond to each week. I think that really showed off my strengths for understanding the material. Just learning about different perspectives on how society and people function was the most valuable. It was eye opening to see other views. Significantly strengthened my awareness of components of society and their influences. hearing other student's discourse on questions.

13. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...

The long hours spent in trying to understand the various concepts and its importance in this world in which we live in. Seriously though, I will remember the roles we as individuals and corporately as institutions play to bring stability, conflict and growth into this somewhat complex and maddening culture. how simple it was to grasp the major concepts of this course even though it was an online course. I was a little nervous at first that this course would be more beneficial if I had taken it during a Fall or Spring semester but I was proven wrong. Understanding how others view people and society. The way I will have applied it.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

As an on-line course, Dr. Springer gave us the opportunity to raise questions, present concerns and allow discussions as needed. I believe Dr. Springer is an excellent teacher and would have loved to attend her class on a face-to-face basis, unfortunately, because I work full time, I'm unable to. There is only so much Dr. Springer can do with an on-line class, and I believe she did the best that could be expected. I'm not sure she can improve teaching this course. I have no suggestions.

The ability to work at my own pace and still able to meet the dead lines. Like I said before, the ability to choose from a variety of discussion board posts to participate in. This really helped me understand the class material better. I could do the assignments at my own pace. I thought that really was beneficial to me. The schedule for participation was flexible. able to complete work on my own schedule

38. What did you like least about your online course experience?

The inability to chat live. Basically, because I'm not tech savvy and this is my first on-line class. It was hard being in a different time zone and remembering to turn assignments in according to Hawaiian time. It was easy to forget that I was in a different time zone. No interaction with other students, but that is obvious not possible with an online course. I enjoyed all aspects.

39. My overall evaluation of this course is...

I enjoyed this course and certainly learned a lot. I'm looking forward to a time when I'll be able to have Dr. Springer as a live instructor in one of my day or evening classes. great! I liked this course a lot more than I thought I was going to. Liked the class, quite informal, would recommend. I'm psyched for my next online class. great!

Laulima is a great website for on-line learning. I had no problems maneuvering through the site, and the instructions were easy to follow. I did experience a problem when I purchased this new laptop, but the help I received from the tech team was outstanding. I plan on taking more on-line classes and have confidence in future instructors of doing exemplary on-line teaching. Thank you all for doing a great job! And to you, Dr. Springer, thank you for your countless hours of reading, correcting and sorting though my paper. Continued success in all that you do!

The discussions of the topics with other class mates was very helpful towards getting a more comprehensive outlook on the topics covered Insights to the different classifications in society. The numbers that were given to represent the growing age of inequality The structure to which I learned much of the new concepts and how important it was to learn every aspect of the material presented in hopes of adding positive measures later in my career. Though we have all learned over the years about the growing inequalities and class structure in our society, it remains important that people don't just talk about it, read about it and later, prop it on a bookshelf somewhere. Have the deadline for the quizzes and assignments reach until Sunday. It was difficult to always find the time during the week and Saturday to complete all of the work required More feedback from other students required. Less discussions. Or at least make it possible to turn in more than one post per.day

I liked being able to know exactly what was required of me every week. Liked knowing exactly what my grades were for quizzes. The subject matter and how well organized this instructor was with everything. Very well structured, topics were engaging, and the writing assignments were thought provoking.

The deadline time for the quizzes and assignments Downloading was difficult and the ability to watch videos in a timely manner were a bit time consuming, especially when it wouldn't download.

I have enjoyed this class immensely and would recommend it to my friends and family and anyone looking to take an online class in sociology in the future.

Great course! I recommend! All in all, I enjoyed this class. Of course I wish that there had been more male participants but that is an uncontrollable aspect. -- snipped -- It was nice not to waste gas on going to class and being able to turn everything online rather than handing in a printed copy. online I enjoyed the time scheduling. I was able to consistently do the readings and answer the questions throughout the week but also on my own time. It made being a full time student and employee a lot easier. I especially enjoyed the material; sociology holds great interest to me. Being able to work at my own pace. This is by far the best online course I had ever taken. I enjoyed the flexibility that came with these online courses. I have a busy work schedule and being able to study and do assignments on my own time was very convenient for me. I also think some of the tools that come with an online classroom was very helpful not only in my learning but to keep on active within the class, i.e. discussion board interactions, email, 24/7 access to grade book etc. As a second year college student I know that it is rather difficult to talk to professors at times because the mass of students, but these online tools make it easy to communicate or just keep on track with your grades etc. * Showing 7 out of 8 survey responses.

-- snipped -- There were no lectures. mistakes of laulima Some of the information was lost because even though we were being tested on it, we could easily have our books open to find the answers. Sometimes forgetting to meet deadlines. There isn't a bad thing I could say. Because in an online set-up we don't have the privilege to meet in person, students may tend to forget an assignment or particular due dates that they would normally be reminded of in class. This happened to me a few times, and though the syllabus was very straightforward from the beginning of the course, sometimes it is easy to look over a due date or just simply forget it within the overwhelming list of college work to do. * Showing 6 out of 7 survey responses.

the ability to travel and leave Hawaii while attending school. That I could do it at my own time frame.. Free range to get our opinions and points across without feeling wrong. I could work at my own pace.

It's not the same as talking to a person face to face, I started to miss on-site classes a little. nothing.. the double due Fridays. They were killers. Having to post multiple times a week.

Most well organized class I've taken this semester. One of the best classes I've taken. Supportive instructor. Highly reccommended. you're a very good teacher. This is the second time I've taken one of your classes and although it is somewhat of a challenge, I still enjoy it immensely. The course load is a little intense at times but I believe that it keeps me on my toes and is the reason why I learn so much. Great class and quality information!

It was the course I took 3 times, and was my final course needed to finish my bachelor's degree! Woohoo! :) its ease and straightforward approach I will remember the text and learning about globalization and the affects of consumerism on communities and the environment. It was really interesting to see other students' perspective. In standard courses, not all students will always say what they're thinking. I think this online course gave everyone the opportunity to have an equal voice. convenient, fast I liked the discussion postings.I enjoyed writing critical thinking questions and answering them. I obtained a wealth of information about our changing society, development, social problems, and what our future might have in store for us all. I liked the simplicity of the course. I'm not computer savvy but it was easier than I imagined once I started the class. Online discussions were a great help in understanding and being able to share and explore ideas that most of us wouldn't if we hadn't. the convenience Working full-time, I liked being able to work at my own pace and not having to worry about going to campus 3x/week. Online courses definitely gives the student flexibility in their learning. I could work at my own pace, and according to MY schedule.

Having to keep myself motivated. I got overwhelmed a couple times, but mostly because I was trying to juggle all kinds of other responsibilities. If I had to take this course on campus, I probably would not have finished. n/a The quiz questions were very difficult sometimes, especially on a time crunch. Laulima platform was not compliant at times. Some of the reading was a bit of a "hard" read. There were concepts or ideas that left me a little "cloudy" and lost but I got through most of it. But, overall, I enjoyed this class and would take another from Springer again. having to log in constantly for updates Definitely a personal problem but I have trouble trying to express what I'm thinking and what I want to share via typing out versus verbal. Again, this is a personal issue and I have to learn how to express myself better. nothing..

Overall great course! Thanks for a great semester! I really enjoy Dr. Springer's classes. She's very clear on her goals and objectives and makes sure the student understands her grading policies. Very well-written syllabus - the burden is on the student to determine what kind of grade they end up with - which is very fair and how it should always be. If you do the work and read the assignments, any student should be able to do well in any course by Dr. Springer.

Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by the idea that it was my first online class in college. I heard about online classes from friends and I was skeptical at first. But it was an enjoyable experience and I plan to take more in the future. several of the subtopics that I found very interesting Different cultures and different views of the world I did not once know. the professor's simple yet effective teaching structure. Her organized teaching methods made it easy for me to obtain a deep understanding of our complex society. She opened my eyes to various aspects and calamities aroused in sociology. The discussion posts were nice because I got to voice my opinion as well as read others opinion. looking back and remembering the discussions and seeing other people's views about our society and how they differed from my own view of it. Recognize social interactions that I learned from this course In ten years from now, I'll probably remember this course mostly by studying human or individuals behavior, different studies from different sociologists, economics, government and families. I was able to apply some the things that I learn in and out of the house and especially in my other classes.

What I liked most was that I could do my quiz, writing assignments and discussion questions on my own time. I work in the morning to evening so being able to do my assignments at any time was really helpful to me.Overall, online classes are flexible and for many college students it is a plus. It's very flexible in that you choose when to do an assignment. the subtopics that our textbook covered were all very exciting and i love that the class was online I liked how all the homework and quizzes were due on one day, the same day every week. I loved the having the freedom to pursue my education at my own time wherever internet access is available. The flexibility. I enjoyed the discussion questions because they were not like the ones that came up through the readings I was able to complete assignments at a time convenient for me What i like most about our online course experience are the different presentation from each chapters, her discussion questions and especially her tests/quizzes ever week. Everything she did in our class has been understandable throughout the whole course.

29. What did you like least about your online course experience?

The thing I liked least was that sometimes my internet or computer would act up. When I wrote a response one time it disappeared and I had to rethink and retype what I wrote. Technical difficulties when doing online course work can sometimes create a difficult online course experience. the "seeing ourselves" textbook is very difficult to read for me Laulima can be really slow, log you out while your in a middle of an assignment, and could be shut down a whole day (usually the day homework is assigned. Nothing! I felt like the quizzes were pretty challenging. None. Online is great. There is nothing i least like about our online course experience. Everything was understandable.

The discussion questions and assignments. These questions were really insightful and it made me think "outside of the box". I also got to use my own personal stories to broaden my answers to the question, so I felt closer to what I was learning. I've also thought that the discussion questions were really interesting to read. I learned so much from my classmates. Also I feel that since this was an online class, it allowed more people to participate without getting judge. In regular classes, people tend to be "afraid" to speak in class, even though their insight may be worth listening to. I really enjoyed every part of the in-class discussion. The content, and how families work. its applicability to real life situations and events.

I liked reading other student's answers in the in-class discussion. I learned a lot from all the other students, and I got to share my personal stories with them too. Another part of the course that I enjoyed was the assignments. Most of the questions were challenging but they allowed me to express my opinions and thoughts. I especially liked the first assignment about feminism, I was able to broaden my knowledge in the feminism movements. The content of the course. The flexibility is always a plus. Professor Springer is prompt in replying to emails and giving additional comments. Sharing our discussions with other students in a comfortable online format allows for perhaps better discussions and honest disclosures about personal experiences that was applicable to material we were learning.

29. What did you like least about your online course experience?

I would have to say the exams were kind of nerve-wrecking. I get really anxious when I use my computer, because sometimes I double click, and then the question gets skipped over. Also, I had a small incident where I didn't fully turn in my exam, I exited the page without pressing the "next" button, leaving my exam as "incomplete". I guess next time I need to be a bit more cautious when using my computer. Not much videos to help understand material. Not very much.

the beginning of class. it was a bit confusing but i was able to get a hang of it. it fun. N/A Seeing certain other students make little effort. I forgot to check there were quizzes so i missed a lot of them. if it were written in a schedule like another online class had it, it would be helpful because it is hard managing 5 classes and 5 different quizzes at 5 different time. maybe under the assignments under where the readings were posted for that week.

The accessibility of the course made this a course that I would recommend to others. Having to engage in weekly discussion that made me think hard about the course subjects we were talking about. It made us compare it to the real world that we live in today. how organized it was. I know exactly how to get a good or bad grade. The different sociological perspectives: functionalist, conflict, and interactionist the issues of socialization, gender stratification, and social roles. How easy it was to log into the class whenever I wanted. I like that we had a full week to do our assignments, because sometimes things come up and we can not get to them until the last minute we were forwarded that opportunity. Clarity of what was expected and freedom to finish the assignments class discussions on interesting topics. No group projects. The discussions because its interesting to learn about other people's opinions about particular sociological matters Learning about other's experiences and perspectives was the most enlightening aspect of this course. The clarity of the class discussion questions. Having to go on to the discussion boards twice a week on two different days. We couldnt just post twice on the same day. nothing unable to change answers on the tests prior to submitting them for grading...really messed up that once you answer a question that is it... The quizzes because I felt the quizzes were asking very detailed questions rather than the broad general stuff No ability to do written assignments or quizzes ahead of schedule. Only having saturday to do tests quizes every week.

The different discussion posts I wrote about, and the different stories I learned about both my teacher and classmates. I found our discussion posts to be the most reflective part of the whole classroom experience. I really enjoyed the topics I talked about, and I often share them with my family and friends. So I believe in ten years I'll still be talking about the relation between pop culture and so much more that affects us in life. I never knew how much more went into the product I was selling at work. I will probably remember this course as the class that offered great reading material in different areas of our culture and society. It introduced me other topics I was intimidated by in a gentle way. Great instructor as well. The structure was very well set up and the subject matter was easy to get a grasp on. I'll probably remember most the word "popular culture" and what it entails. I've heard it before but never thought anything of it until this class. I really enjoyed the discussion posts. I also enjoy the structure of the course, its a no fuss no buss. Very straight foward! I liked that there was allowed freedom in the topics we wrote about each week. It was nice to express our opinions on the topics, rather than merely summing up what we wrote. The course was easy to follow and easy to be interested in Conversing with other students and getting thier insights to the topics of the week. Everyone came up with thier own ideas and made you think differently from where you were coming from. Independent learning and I don't need to attend the course on campus. Parking is terrible! I like posting question and giving feed back to other students questions, although I felt like I was always on a tight schedule.

29. What did you like least about your online course experience?

Probably wished we could have Sunday to turn in things as well. But, honestly the class is straight foward and it works for me. The only thing that was a little difficult was posting on different days three times a week. It was hard at times to get online all the time while juggling work and other classes. Online classes should be relatively flexible since it is being taken for that reason. But, I don't think asking for 3 posts a week is unreasonable. The schedule was a bit rigorous and made it difficult for me to keep up, which is more of a personal issue due to many extra classes. N/a I felt like there was always something I had to do in the class, weather it be making questions, answering questions on two different days, and writing a paper. I felt like I had no freedom to breath, I guess mainly, I did not like writing the book response every week, that was due on a Saturday. I would have preferred it to be due on a Monday so I would have the weekend to complete it.

Thank you for a great course Professor Springer. I wouldn't keep taking your classes, if you weren't the great teacher you are. Your smart and intellegent, and I would love to be seen in the same light when I graduate and further my career out of retail! Professor Springer was a great help and was very eager to answer questions when emailed! Professor Springer is an nuturing instructor who made her expectations of this course very clear. If a student didn't perform well, then it was basicually due to their lack of participation and not due to being misinformed of class expectations. She did a fair process and I appreciate that. Prof. Springer has a unique style of teaching online effectively. I have enjoyed learning in this course!

It gave me a defferent perspective of the poeple and relationships that I have and see around me. being the course i shouldn't have taken online. everything or person that I interact with. This course would be hard to forget because it discusses every aspect of society. The leasons I have learned about sociology and the way it impacts cultures throughout the world. I have learned that sociology can be integrated into all areas of study. I will certainly remember the course terms and vocabulary. The way Mrs. Springer had the tests made it so that each student had to know the material, so it made me study. I am glad for that. remembering the concept of sociological imagination and how we should try to remove our cultural bias when evaluating another culture. I think I will also remember the concept of globilization since it will continue to play a role in our future the sheer amount of questions i had to answer each week. I felt like there were so many questions regarding peoples names that i spent most of my time playing wheres waldo through the chapter looking for them and very little time engaged in the course content.the discussion was much more effective as a learning tool, but the teachers participation would have been nice.The teacher was very good and available of course. But the saturation of information just numbed me after a while. the human brain can only process so much at a given time. This is a one hundred lvl class and i most likley not remember talcott parsons three days from now. I hope this helps you to streamline an otherwise awsome course.

28. What did you like most about your online course experience?

I liked that even though this was an online class all the student participated and we all talked to each other and our teacher. i didn't have to physically go to class. I loved the fact that I did not have to attend a class on campus because I could work from home. In addition, Professor Springer helped whenever I had difficulties understanding the material, discussion questions, or my incorrect quiz questions. She was always responded quickly and efficiently to my e-mails. I appreciated the fast responses from her because I was able to finish my assignments accurately and quickly. I interact more with my online course teachers than with my in-class course teachers. It was flexible. I liked being able to do my work at my own time, while still having reasonable deadlines. the fact that you can do the work on your own time and pace I enjoyed the video and thought it really helped me absorb and retain the material from the text. I especially liked the TEDTalks video. I now watch various other topics in the series whenever I have time. i liked the freedom to work at any time throughout the week.

29. What did you like least about your online course experience?

At times, there was a lot of information to process. there wasn't a teacher to push me Although I loved the course, I cannot say that nothing needs to be improved because there is always room for improvement. For the assignments, instead of unlocking them at the end of four weeks, we could have the option between writing a paper at the end of each chapter or writing four papers every four chapters. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the coursework and guidelines for this class. It was very organized and easily understandable. That I could not post my answers to the discussion questions all on the same day. I cannot think of anything I disliked about this course. that the quizzes were only available to take friday and saturday. it would be nice to have the option and take it any time during the week.. i like to use my time on fridays and saturdays.. to relax.. i am the type of student who likes to get their work done early at the beginning of the week. I didn't dislike anything, but it might be better to have more discussion topics per chapter. Or, possibly an additional open forum type of format so a student could get points for discussing a particular topic from the text that interested them. Just a thought. I felt isolated from other students, and the weekly quizes were not difficult just plain tedious, I really got very little out of them.

I have taken online classes before, and some of those were not as well organized. With my teacher being so organized it made it a lot easier to understand and learn. i wish i could go back and do better I would like to say, "Thank You," to my professor because she was an excellent, helpful instructor. I understand more about society and the world because of this course. It extended my knowledge from the Cultural Anthropology course that I took before, and if possible, I would love to continue studying sociology, specifically criminology. Thank You, Professor Springer. Hopefully, I can take another class with you as the instructor. Good luck with your dissertation too! Great Instructor! I learned a lot in this class! Thanks so much! The class discussion "great format" Student interaction was at a 100% and the professor was mostly "absent" in posts. It helped in that it gave us more free reign to say what we would like to without fear. It was really cool to be able to see other people's perspectives. There were many things that other students brought up that I would not have thought of. The consistency in knowing what to expect. It was very clear.

Some students put to much info or input in discussions. The "what if's" questions that the other students adopted for the discussion posts. While i give kudos to those that tried to adopt a more thought provoking way of providing a discussion question, it was often hard to understand and connect the relevancy of their questions to the chapter of the week.. I am my own worst enemy. I got behind in the course and missed a lot of assignments. having the test only availabe on friday and saturday. I felt it was unrealistic to assume COLLEGE students will be able to give full focus to major assignments on the weekend. I'm not too fond of our textbook, Development and Social Change - A global Perspective.

The topics . This course's material is nothing new to me, yet this course has allowed me to play with my own ideas and voice them in an intellectual manner. Because of this, I was able to build confidence in discussing my own ideas. The videos that were posted to watch The materials used in this class were great. It wasn't just books and journal articles, but video clips, etc. I am in another online Sociology class right now and absolutely hate it because the professor doesn't "teach" anything. There is no supplemental material and a few discussions and assignments largely spread out throughout the semester. Whereas in this class there were weekly discussions, feedback on response papers, and PowerPoint presentations.

28. What did you like most about your online course experience?

It's obvious that Professor Springer has taught online classes before. She's really organized- everything from her syllabus to assignments and course resources are easily accessible, which was a definite plus. I did not have to go to class at any certain time. I really think that this instructors method of conducting an online course should be taught to other instructors. She was prepared, well read, accessible, and no fuss. Most of the time I feel that online courses leave me in the dark as to my performance and class interaction. Her class was cut and dry. I appreciate it. I could do the work at my own pace Pretty much everything. I would highly recommend this professor, and would take another class from her in the future.

29. What did you like least about your online course experience?

Clarification issues. I think that students in the course should be made to reply to everyone's questions made. Weeks have gone by where I have not received one reply to my posts. Kind of frustrating seeing that I put a lot of thought into my posts and want to test my thought with other students. I also think that the person who poses the original question should have to post a response to the replies as a way to further the dialog. NA

how much I liked the structure of the course. I found it fair and reasonable. I really learned a lot. The discussion set up. I found it quite fun to enter a response and go back later to see if anyone had responded and, if they did, what they had to say. The photos.
