I've never had a class before where my world view was actually changed by the content of the course. I won't say I am an entirely new person, but I can say that I have a brand new way of looking at my own perspective in a way that benefits me in and out of the classroom.
This course changed me. I used to have a very narrow view of geography/history/culture and Dr. Rinelli really broadened my perspectives. He taught me a lot about the world that I didn't already know, and he was very effective at using different media to help demonstrate concepts that needed more explanation. It was an intense class but it was also extremely interesting. Not only was the material interesting, but also the way he ran the class by having us take turns teaching it to one another under his direction. I think it's a rare but amazing quality to find a professor like Dr. Rinelli who not only teaches his syllabus but also expands the minds of his students and teaches them how to think for themselves. This was my favorite class of the semester and it has forever changed the way I will look at and learn about the world. I wish he was teaching HON 495, I'd love to take another class from him!
This was a difficult course, but it was engaging and well worth the effort. We covered a lot of material I don't think would have been available in any other course, and the discussions were very interesting. As someone with minimal knowledge of political science (or many of the other subjects covered in this course) I found this course was much more engaging than I had expected. The discussions outside of class via an online forum allowed students to work in additional material they were interested in as well.
This course has changed my life-view in a number of ways. I have learned to identify and appreciate borders from both perspectives as a necessary and unnecessary function. Although outside of my immediate area of study, the relevance to my studies that are not obviously apparent have been many. Lorenzo has helped me to look inward and rethink many things that are important to me. I am truly thankful to have enrolled and participated actively in this course. There needs to be more courses like this for cross-disciplinary studies.
AMAZING professor! I wish I was able to take more courses before he leaves UH!!

The reaction papers
Professor Rinelli's teaching style was most valuable. It's a unique approach and one that I haven't encountered even once throughout my undergrad studies. Instead of lecturing students and asking them to memorize and repeat facts, Professor Rinelli encourages his students to think critically and engage with the material by participating in in-class discussions. This focus on participation took root outside of class time as well because I found myself continuing the discussion with friends and family to hear their take on issues. It was never a test of how much we knew but how much we were willing to learn. Truthfully, I learned far more about myself and the world in general from this one class than all of my classes combined.

Thank you, Professor, for a fantastic semester! I now realize how critical this period in my life really is--I have the time right now to learn, to cultivate an awareness of myself and the world. Most importantly, I will continue to question my position, my idea of "helping," and I will do so until asking and answering the "why?" is second nature.
Lorenzo was truly the best teacher I have had in my entire academic career.

This course introduces us to the important terms and issues. I enjoyed the oral presentation from the students. Instructor Rinelli is great at facilitating the discussion and encourages us to think critically. I appreciate his time and effort to create pockets of inquiry in an unreasonable world.
I felt that the course would be very difficult and was greatly intimidated by the difficulty and subject at first. But thanks to the teacher's encouraging responses, I was able to learn and present my knowledge better than before. I greatly value the things that I had learned in this class and will put them to use in my future endeavors.
He is a very knowledgeable and charasmatic professor.
Great and interesting course! Great instructor.
Lorenzo is very knowledgeable about the subject matter, really funny, and emphasizes critical thinking. I enjoyed coming to class. Grading seems to be a little unfair and I have no idea what my letter grade would currently be at this point in the course.

the in-class discussions of the readings, the films, and the article evaluation assignments.
I really liked how the class was setup. Lorenzo would talk about the readings and then hand the conversation over to the class where we got to ask questions and discuss the readings. We got into a lot of class discussions involving everyone and it was great to see everyone's opinion on the readings.
Class discussions with Rinelli.
everything. Learning about the nation-state and learning how borders are filters and are mobile, and that history is important to know to grasp a better understanding and better analyze political like migration and its effects.

Fun course, enjoyed it.
I really loved this course, but felt it would have been more effective if it was offered more than once a week. The concepts we discussed were complex and interesting and I think that if we had this course multiple days/week, it would be a bit more comprehensive as part of our daily studies. As a once/week course, it was easy to neglect during the week. Overall loved the class! I hope that it continues to be offered
One of the best courses i've taken at UH
In all of my time as a student, from grade school through to the present, I have had only a handful of instructors who have successfully motivated me to perform as well as I can in any given class. Professor Rinelli is definitely one of those instructors. Speaking honestly, I am generally one of those students who is capable of coasting through classes, putting in the minimal required effort for decent grades. This class was certainly challenging. But beyond the content, professor Rinelli does not let me get away with my usual modus operandi, rather he demands your best, and it is that which most makes me appreciate this course and the instructor. He motivated me to go beyond my usual efforts, to put in all the work I could, and to really try to learn and understand the material. In a nutshell, he made me a better student, and gave me a better appreciation for my objective as a student, which is not necessarily all about getting good grades, but rather about applying myself and getting the best education I can. I'm inspired to take my education more seriously. I am coming away from this class having learned more in one semester than from most of my other courses combined. And if my previous classes with him are any indication, in the future I will retain more of the knowledge I've gained from this class than most others. This class was a pleasure to take, and I enjoyed having professor Rinelli as an instructor, he's definitely one of the best in the Political Science department at UH Manoa.
Great Professor. Tough readings. Very interesting class.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
In the beginning, I was confused and very wary of Rinelli's curriculum but as the semester progressed and the material started to become more familiar the missing pieces in the puzzle became clear. I valued the reflection papers the most because it allowed us to reevaluate the unit we were studying that month as well as figure out for ourselves how to incorporate it with past units. Each unit, comprised of several readings, skillfully referenced to another like a time line of cause and events. It was very interesting.
The development of State has been a challenging topic for the students to pursue political studies. The most valuable things is that this course can provide intellectual history of State, how State is conceptualized. Theory of State is necessary for students particularly from Political Science.
Talking about Jamaica and learning about the IMF was very interesting. Learning about the camps was good too. I really liked the movies used in the course because it made us have to think about how those movies link to what we had learned. Refugees were interesting but I also liked learning about Australia and the retroactive law. Great class overall and I feel that I learned a lot!
All the readings were very informative. The movies as well.
The videos/movies that were shown in class were very informative and I enjoyed watching most of them.
The role of your legal identity. I am applying for the Navy Officer Program and one of the questions they asked me was: what is your legal identity? It made me happy to know that I knew the importance of this question, as well as the importance in answering it.
The movies that I watched were the most valuable for me. It wasn't because I don't like to read, but moreso because it was easier to understand what we were learning by seeing rather than words. + the movies and clips we were watched were interesting and some situations that were in the movies wasn't what I knew beforehand. The readings were also very informational and made me analyze things differently because of some of the challenging articles we all had to read.
Nothing.
The class discussions for the readings were executed very well, student leadership allows for forced peer involvement, ability for peers to ask questions regarding the readings in a less potentially embarrassing way, and insight into student interests/knowledge gaps.
The course had no invaluable information. I believe it is crucial for students to learn the basics of the state in the manner Lorenzo taught us. If I were to give value to any part of the course, it would have to be the structure of the class. He progressively taught us about the parameter and loopholes in the state, giving us reason to analyze our original opinions and showing how ignorant we were.
a lot of the materials we got to read and watch were really thought provoking, and i enjoyed the challenge of the class readings and writings that were required for each unit. i enjoyed writing the reflection papers because it helped me to summarize the material on my own and it allowed me to express my own personal opinions and thoughts on the issues.
i feel as if all aspects of this course were valuable. Everything that we learned in this class i hadn't known anything about before taking this course.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I did not really appreciate how Rinilli rejected a lot of the classes opinions in the beginning. It felt at times like we had to read his mind. At one point I did not have the enthusiasm to speak up in class. Later on in the semester he did* improve with that issue.
To best of my knowledge nothing was least valuable. All the topics provided were very helpful and significant for studying modern States.
It seemed like everything we learned was valuable so I am unable to give an answer to the question.
Some lectures were too long, and lost interest.
Sometimes the readings were extremely difficult to understand.
No, it was all very useful
Nothing really.
Everything.
Essays I felt were graded somewhat harshly for an intro, 100-level class in the sense that it is very hard to get an A. By that same token however, Lorenzo also is appreciative of effort, and rewards obvious effort with lighter grading in a very fair manner.
nothing
none.

18. Other comments:
I think Rinelli should teach a more advanced Political Science class. He is so knowledgeable in this department that he is expecting too much from introductory level freshmen.
Good class
Great class and Great teacher
This was a very good class considering the course itself. Professor Rinelli made it a lot more interesting.
He is an asshole.
I am very happy with this course and instructor, and pass on high recommendations.
I would recommend anyone take the course under Lorenzo's tutelage. His clear mastery of the subject seems far beyond anything I have ever expected. He has given me a new outlook on politics, and given me something greater than most other courses could provide. He gave me confidence in trusting my opinion when I write my essays. He allowed my opinion about the state without judging it but rather encouraging it. He taught me through a series of puzzles always challenging my thoughts and giving me something to ponder throughout the semester. I believe he was one of the best professors I have had.
i really appreciate the effort the teacher have put into our class discussions. it was really difficult to start these conversations, but the teacher tried really hard to make sure that everyone at least understood the challenging reading that was assigned to class as homework.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning about communism, the different types of government systems, borders, and watching movies to help us apply what we've learned
This course was unlike other intro political science classes I have heard of, and there were many thought provoking concepts brought into the discussions that I found very valuable. This course was meant to bring up the different relationships that the state has with it's borders, citizens, refugees etc. I found it much more valuable to open our eyes to societies everywhere around the world rather than focusing just on the U.S. government. Through this class I was able to look deeper into why things are the way they are in society, and although there's still much to learn, I feel like this class did exactly what it was supposed to do as an introduction class- it may have had even deeper concepts than I was expecting.
Having students lead discussions helped me to understand the articles. It gave me different points of views and ideas that I didn't think of when reading. The papers at the end of each unit were also helpful because it forced me to think about what we read and put my opinion down on paper.
Awesome teacher. Knew his stuff extremely well. good curriculum.
The most valuable aspect of the course were the in class discussions that went over the reading assignments. They helped me gain a greater understanding especially when some of the readings were more difficult to understand.
The aspects of the course that was most valuable is learning about how the state works, the marketing or economy, borders, and the differences between people immigrating into the state. The most important thing is that I learned many new things that I never knew about. The course also helped me to learn to read more scholarly and complicated readings in which I need to take apart to understand slowly. It's important for us in America to learn about the government in the world because not everyone in other states are as fortunate as us.
the way my teacher challenged my way of seeing things and exposed me to a different point of view
None.
This course was very eye-opening. I would gladly take another course from this professor in the future and hope to do so.
The in class discussions were great because you go over all of the things you didn't get in the readings. You go in depth on things you have to present so it sticks in your head for a while.
Learning to read dense materials more effectively & become more interested in topics I never thought I would be interested in.
the way it broadened my knowledge of the world
The (online) readings that coincided with the class outline. No midterms or finals supplemented with reflection papers after every unit.
Looking at the state from a theoretical view was definitely an interesting experience. My knowledge was expanded for sure.
I loved that we didn't just read out of one book so i attained many different perspectives from the different readings. Also i loved the readings because i'd never been exposed to non american literature before now.
The wide scope of topics regarding the state. Also we did not sacrifice depth for this wideness. It was a VERY demanding class.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Although at first I didn't understand how the six units were going to tie itself together, by the end it did make a lot more sense- so I can't say there were aspects that weren't valuable, because they all led to the next.
While I think the student-led discussions were a positive, it would have been nice to have one lecture-type session at the end of each unit to sum up the main points.
The aspects of the course that was least valuable is nothing because all the units tied together in some ways and they are very important to learning about political science.
some of the reading was hard to understand, which led to unsuccessful discussions
All.
Students teaching the class is kind of a lost cause. I feel like the discussions could have been more interesting if the teacher just took over (as he usually did) and maybe tried to connect the subjects to current issues because everything we were talking about was hard to connect with which is essential to a healthy discussion.
I think that the readings for this class were very challenging. They were all pretty long too, so it's pretty hard to keep up with.
LONG reading assignments. Not retaining much of it.
Not considered a writing intensive (or maybe an oral communication). Discussion leading for some...
One of the main problems was the lack of assignments in which to gain points. Albeit considering the format of the course, participation should be a good portion of the grade, there were not enough other assignments in which to raise one's grade.
all aspects were valuable
The other students.
