13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
I can tell he's a genius and a great person even though I've never met him. Punctual about grading assignments. Feedback on them was also great.
He is very helpful and kind.
Well versed in the subject that he teaches, organized, and makes students aware of what is required of them.
He knows that how to care his student even though this is online class.
Prof. Polley's major strength as a teacher in this online linguistics class was that he incorporated relevant, relatable examples and subject matter for assignments as well as the use of various resource sites and methods of analysis.
A major strength as a teacher is by posting grades regularly so that students are able to keep track of their standing.
Fast response of emails and very knowledgeable on the subjsect.
He is easy to talk to and very lenient.
His knowledge of the material
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The videos I watched in this class were very helpful. I learned a lot from them and it's stuff that I've even mentioned to my friends in conversations because they're instilled in my brain now. This is something I would say to keep up because it's something that I actually take away from the class and maybe other students too. maybe have less assignments and more like q & a on videos that are assigned
I think uploading some video might help student to understand some of the class material and chapter.
I know it is a writing intensive class, but during the summer in the final week I think it is a bit excessive to have a final exam, 500 words for class posts, responses to observations, and turn in the essay.
I think that He is doing well with his class.
The only thing that I found was difficult was the intense writing requirements every week, but this is a writing intensive class so I suppose that is the deal.
I didn't really care for the textbook that was used to explain some of the material, or sometimes i would look up videos or other methods of a more comprehensive definition.
none
I want him to provide topics for class discussion.
No chnages
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He Always made it clear that he was there for us and to reach out if we needed help even if it was the slightest thing

This is online class. He always check his email.
Yes, Prof. Polley did show concern for students new to online coursework and showed some leniency in the first weeks assignments as we were all adjusting to the set up.

He extended the deadlines for homeworks
He replied email very fast.
He posted our grades

Carl Polley has appeared to have engaged the minds of all of the students in the class and formatting the class in a way that we as students can interact and critic each other is a crucial component to education, especially online classes.
Carl's class is very informative, and it involves his students to really read and consider what each other is asking before respond.

Although this is an online course and very fast going since it is a 6 week program in summer, I wish he had some power point lectures that would help us understand some difficult concepts discussed in textbook and some readings that he assigned much better.

He's a nice teacher i have ever met

He puts in a lot of effort. It's clear to students that he comes to class prepared; he puts a lot of thought and consideration into class materials. Furthermore, he encourages students to share their ideas, which I think is great because it's always great to gain some different perspective.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No
He's good.
Explains more
More discussions in Chinese. I think it's absolutely wonderful that most assignments students have the option between Chinese or English, however I think it would be even more effective as a Chinese course if discussions were mostly held in Chinese.
I hope Dr. Carl can talk more about Chinese culture. Not just talk and teach deeply.
no
Less quizzes
It is hard to learn Chinese culture by using English to explain it.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He is willing to answer our questions after the class.
He listens to students's ideas
During group discussion time, he doesn't just stand on the side watching on, he goes around and engages with each group, asking if there are any questions, and asks to hear what the group has discussed about. Furthermore, if a student has concerns about their grades or the class materials, he is very understanding and assists in finding solutions to their problems.
When I asked him one question, he explained that question very detailed. I showed him my difficulties to do the service learning, Dr. Carl helped me address the difficulties.
no
He makes sure everyone understands instructions.
Feel free to ask him questions or make an appointment to meet him by email anytime.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

You are a good teacher
Thanks for a fun semester! I enjoyed the flexibility in the course. Students were encouraged to voice their opinions, which I think is great, a crucial characteristic for a successful teacher.
Dr. Carl is a teacher who can give students safety. If students have problems, he will try his best to help them.
I think you can teach students more about Chinese cultures.
He is a great professor, he made me feel less worry about my first semester for college.
18. Other comments:
too many group works
I was curious that whether Dr. Carl could understand our Chinese presentation. Because when I presented in Chinese, I spoke very fast, and I looked at his blue eyeballs. He seems to be confused.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Mr. Polley knew his topic thoroughly.
The course objectives and procedures were clear.
He gives detailed feedback that is helpful to everyone in the class. He explains what he wants in great detail for his assignments, which is incredibly helpful.
Carl Polley was very educated in his subject and you could tell even through the internet that he enjoyed what he was teaching and especially enjoys teaching others the subject.
Very encouraging and fostered a lot of class discussion. Very prompt in responding to questions and made himself available. I like the requirements of class participation and I think his way of handling it encouraged people to participate even if they would normally be silent in a regular classroom situation.
Always provided feedback on performance. Easy to reach, sends prompt replies.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Perhaps it was just me, but I had a bit of difficulty following the assignment due dates from the syllabus. Over time I was able to figure it out with trial and error.
Maybe allow additional observation responses to be apart of grading for class discussion.
Since this is a summer school course, the pace is fast. If it were a semester class I'd have comments on the pace, but no other comments right now.
I would not change the assignment deadline only. Id suggest that the deadline be moved to maybe Sunday night so the people who have full time jobs are able to spend more time on assignments and therefore get better grades.
Add more audio examples to the online course
I never explored it, but is there a way to diagram sentences online if someone wanted to do some of the homework assignments that required it? Consider some live lectures or discussions to enable students to hear some of the examples and to work on some diagramming together.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Each assignment he would give an example of how he wanted the work to be done rather than leaving it to the students to figure out. That can be difficult in an online class.
Addressed all questions and concerns promptly.
He emails back quite fast, which is really helpful/convenient.
In the grade book section he would write notes on the said saying to try again on your answer if it was not correct or he would give extra credit for student who are behind.
through email contact
Very understanding and compassionate when I had a personal family matter come up. Diplomatic and encouraging responses to our entries.
provided feedback on assignments. encourage discussions
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Mr. Polley put out good information that was very interesting to learn.
Yes, because the course objectives and procedures were clear.
Yes, he is a great professor. I like that his assignments makes you think for yourself and also converse with others. Because this is an online class, it is normally difficult to conduct a discussion, but his assignments create a efficient discussion.
Yes because he is a good teacher and knows his subject well.
Yes
Yes, very organized, covered the material well in a short period of time. Very nice and easy to work with. Flexible and accommodating.
Yes. He is very personable. Always replies to emails in a timely manner. Knowledgable of subject matter
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He made the class enjoyable. I learned a lot about myself from his teachings.
Nothing
I would recommend this professor to friends.
I was scared at first about the class thinking I would not understand it but later on through the course I found it very interesting, some of the thing we are learning you dont normally think about on a day to day bases.
Very interesting class. Was able to cover a great deal of information in a short span of time.
I enjoyed being in his class and he is a good teacher.

As an online teacher, during discussions, he remained active and in tune with us throughout the semester. It was refreshing to see that he was involved in discussing subjects alongside us.
He knows the subject well and makes it very clear what he expects from the class. I didn't have any additional questions even though there were a lot of assignments to post, his syllabus was very detailed and answered any questions regarding homework.
He is very open and easy to reach out to. He really wants his students to be successful and encourages them to ask questions.
Professor Polley really knew the subject well and shared his knowledge with the class.
He really knows the content well and does a good job responding back to students promptly.
He really encourages everyone to interact with each other and respond to others thoughts and ideas.
very knowledgable on the subject!
Carl is very knowledgeable on the subject of Linguistics. He gives good feedback and clear instructions making it much easier and bearable to take a online class. He encourages a lot of questions and discussions to make sure everyone is on it and not left behind.

Maybe extending the assignments to Sunday since Friday feels short for those taking multiple summer school classes. Also, maybe grade the assignments in a more timely manner.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He wrote in every single thread for our online class. He also emailed us, reminding us of assignments and deadlines.
He was very personable even though it was an online course. He always tried to reply to student's discussion posts even though he didn't have to. Also, once he posted the wrong due date (made it too late) for two homework assignments, but since he already said it could be due 1 week later than the intended due date, he let us turn it in by the later date.
He was very encouraging in offering help to any students that needed it. He included in every e-mail he sent, to feel free at any time to e-mail him with questions or concerns.
He was free to answer any questions or concerns to assignments that were due.
He showed concern for students by writing encouraging messages in the discussion boards on the online forum and makes himself available to answer any questions.
He writes comments in grade books and once when I emailed him he emailed me back within a few minutes with much concern for my problem.
always telling us to email him if we had any concerns or questions on the assignment
He made sub-forums for any concerns and questions the students may have. He replies promptly to emails and forum questions, making sure any confusions are cleared of.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I normally would never recommend an online class, but he is an exception. I would most definitely recommend him. It's hard as a student who likes to learn head on from a teacher in a classroom setting, to appreciate an online class. But due to the fact that he stayed rather involved throughout the entire semester, was refreshing.
Yes, definitely! He is very nice and approachable, which is nice because especially in a class like linguistics, students have a lot of questions and it is key to feel comfortable to ask them all!
Yes, he's very knowledgeable, fair, encouraging, and helpful.
I would recommend Professor Polley because he really knows this subject and he makes the subject easy to learn.
I would recommend him to other students because his class is very well organized and there are no surprises. He is fair and well educated.
Yes I would. This is my first online class but it seems well organized and easy to follow the assignments and their due dates.
yes because it was a fun class to take and very interesting
Yes, he assigns a fair amount of work and encourages a lot of participation and discussion. The work was fairly challenging, but not difficult, making it very doable. You're guarantee to learn at least a thing or two on linguistics.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
All online teachers should be like you. Online classes, I would normally say are self taught because teachers just give assignments and grade your work. But due to the fact that you stay posted and available, and stayed involved was really nice. And basically what every online teacher should do.
N/A
I have really enjoyed his class.
n/a
Great teacher, challenging but not too difficult WI. Makes the subject of linguistics bearable. The textbook is a little mundane.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes He is a friendly teacher and his class is organized
Yes, it is because he class is not that difficult.

Yes, because CHNS 290 only have one professor for this class, we don't have any choices.
NO, he did good job.

Yes, I will. He is a great teacher, sometimes when he ask you a question, if you don't know how to answer him back. He would say, "just say whatever you think, there's no right or wrong answers."
Yes, he is nice.

Structural, easy to get in touch with if needed, punctual.
he is really teaching us not by the book.
He is a teacher that can make us participate in class
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would have liked to do more translation kind of work. As simple as translating a paragraph of everyday use documents, that way the students really learn both English and Chinese.
No for now.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Encourages students to ask questions if they have any. Provides clear instructions to students who have missed class so that he/she doesn't fall behind in course.
He is really good with that, if you ask him a question, he'll answer you and give you his point of view and advice.
he always reply the email as soon as possible.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Dr. Polley is a great instructor.

I learn that many things that doesn't has the right nor wrong

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Professor Polley organized the course very well.
Very organized.
He is concern for students.
Picks very interesting subject material. Addresses problems and answers questions very quickly.
I enjoyed this class more than I expected to. I learned a lot about the different types of Chinese poetry and the readings were so diverse!
Knowledgeable about the subject & offers help to students by sending links with information pertaining to the topic they chose for papers.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I think it would be best if you made weekly announcements, just to make sure everyone is aware of what's due and whatnot.
Perfectly fine just the way it is.
Too much discussion.
It's a bit confusing to submit assignments twice, once on the discussion board and once in the assignments. Perhaps divide them up so we'd only have to submit once each time.
N/A
Please start grading assignments more promptly. It took almost a month to get back the midterm paper scores. It would also be nice if you made announcements more regularly and occasionally participated in the weekly discussions.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Professor Polley responded to emails quickly and really communicated with the students, rather than just answer questions.
Offers help for any students, especially when we struggle with essays.
Help the students more understanding the course.
Answers questions, gives feedback, is prompt at putting up new content on board.
He made sure that the syllabus was clear and easy to understand. He reiterated the directions for our assignments many times and on each assignment to make sure that we fully understood the task at hand. He would also remind us of specific tasks we were in charge of.
Not sure. Situation never arose.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend Professor Polley to other students. He treats all students fairly, even though more than half the class were ESL students. I thought that was really nice.
Yes, we get to read lots of interesting poems and novels.
No.
Yes, if they like to read and write.
I would definitely recommend Professor Polley's class! It was definitely Writing intensive but in a very enjoyable way! The directions for the assignments were so clearly explained and reiterated which made it a lot easier for me .
Depends on the student. Some people can't handle classes where the teachers hardly intervene. I would only recommend this class to people who are able to remember and keep to deadlines themselves and can fully function with limited interaction with the teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Professor Polley didn't grade things right away, but it was fine.
Great professor!
Thank you so much!
Impressive feat by juggling the work of having all these assignments and classes and dealing with your newborn.
18. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think the discussion was the most valuable, especially the leader discussions. It was very important to involve the students as leaders of the discussions, and show us how hard all that responsibility can be.
The weekly discussions.
No.
The interaction between students. Although there was a lot of writing, I got a lot of learning about other people's perspectives.
I liked everything.
19. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
All the work was individual, no group projects. I think this made it a little harder to really connect with the other students, almost like we're all just a bunch of strangers at the end of the semester.
I believe it is the Journal entries, because it can be repetitive and very similar to the class discussions.
No.
Perhaps the journals. There's quite a bit of writing to be doing in the class and because the journals aren't critiqued, they don't serve a lot of purpose except buffer writing.
20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think weekly announcements/reminders would be nice. I think a group project would be nice as well.
Nothing in mind at the moment.
No.
The organization of some aspects of the board and assignments. It's nice that everything is spelled out, but I didn't like having to submit things twice.
I wish Professor Polley would've participated in the weekly discussions, sharing his perspectives of the readings we read. It would've made the discussions more enlightening I think.
Interact with the students more. Besides his first post to start the discussion topics, we hardly ever hear from him. I'm not even sure if he actually reads the discussion threads or not. Would be nice if he responded at least once a week.
21. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Fair, nice, and helpful.
Helpful, Organzied, Amazing!
Nice Helpful Smart.
The college batman
Lenient Knowledgeable Helpful
22. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
No changes, everything was really organized.
I believe that the minimum requirements for the discussion was a bit too much.
Too much discussion, but it was good.
Not posting so much of the paper sections to the forums. The rough drafts are good for posting, but the rest of the sections don't seem to do much.
Again, post more! Interact with the students!
23. Other comments:
Very nice class, very interesting.
Nope.
No.
Carl is hardworking. He can reply our email very quickly. Good teaching skill. Well organized syllabus.
Story time: When I went to check out the discussion threads one week, I noticed that Prof. Polley had actually posted something after the discussion leader. This was odd since he never spoke in the discussion threads. It turns out that he the student that was discussion leader of that week had plagiarized her post, and he was pointing that out. However, I feel like the manner he did it in was extremely unprofessional. He corrected her on the thread, public to the entire class. This matter should have been held in email or face-to-face format, away from the extra eyes and ears of the class. It is against the teacher code of ethics to humiliate any student in any way (esp. in front of a class). If that had happened to me, you'd better believe I would've reported it to the highest official I could find. As it is, I was tempted to report him for her. It seems like she is one of KCC's many exchange students, and she probably was too embarrassed to take any action herself. Next time, please handle such situations in a more professional manner.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Good guy
I feel that Carl Polley's major strengths as a teacher are that he is an extremely effective communicator and that he is very supportive of his students. Professor Polley wants all of us to really succeed, he offers his assistance at all times and is available via email or telephone and responds in a timely manner. Professor Polley has gone over and beyond to reach out to all of us in his online class to offer his help if we needed it.
Always available and very reasonable. Cares for the students and wants them to succeed.
he helps his students understand information clearer if they have any questions, he explains it in great detail.
He is clearly knowledgable, and is approachable, friendly, and supportive. He responds to emails and questions in a timely manner and shares relevant information with the entire class.
Very helpful and wants his students to succeed and do well in his class.
He knew the material really well and his students. He knows that with an online class kids tend to not do hw, so he extended a lot of assignments, and gave extensions to kids who had trouble like if they didn't have a working laptop.
He really understands that his class isn't the only thing students are committed to. I think that really encouraged learning (at least for me). He takes part in a lot of the Laulima discussions by offering clarification on confusing topics and his experiences relating to the topic.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Sooooo much busy work
n/a
Nothing, he was very lenient
Mostly I would ask for more examples for some of the homework assignments so that I can better gauge my progress and whether or not I'm actually doing what is asked of me. Also, explanations in more layman terms or more real-world examples
Update grades more often and frequently as assignments are turned in.
Some of the instructions for the assignments weren't clear, some assignments I turned in not knowing if I did it right or not. Clearer instructions asking specifically for what is needed to turn in would be better.
while I actually enjoyed my group I don't really think online courses and group projects go together! If I were to do this semester over again I would've taken this course in a classroom setting so I could have better worked with my group and had questions answered as we asked them. Not that Mr. Polley was slow to respond to emails but by the time a response was made we weren't in our group anymore... and we'd only meet up once a week for a couple hours, its been hard to really grasp linguistic concepts this way!
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Responded to emails
Professor Polley continuously and frequently communicated with us that he was available via email or telephone if we needed his assistance. He informed us of any changes or updates. He expressed at all times throughout the semester that although some of us were struggling his main concern was that we comprehend the material that was being presented in class as opposed to just 'completing the work' and not understanding it.
He responded to emails very quickly
Grading fairly, encouraging to complete all assignments, even if they were late. Always responded to emails and then shared relevant information and questions raised by other students will all of his students.
Informative emails and discussions on laulima.
He extended assignments or pointed us in the right direction if we didn't know what to do.
Yes. He's changed the schedule at least once to allow us to focus on one assignment or another. He also allows resubmissions for most assignments.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Sure
Yes. Professor Polley's class is not the easiest and there is a lot of work to be done but I recommend his class because your really get a chance to learn the material, if and when you struggle he is always there to help clarify things.
Yes. Good experience in this writing intensive course.
Yes, because he was a very informative teacher
I would because he is knowledgable and fair. However, I felt a disconnect from the material because it was so technical, and this is a topic I have great interest in. I wish there had been more real-world examples to make it all relevant to our everyday lives.
Yes, he is very helpful and truly cares about the success of his students.
I would if the student was very interested in the subject, do not recommend taking this class if you just need the credit you will fall behind.
Yes yes yes. He's a really fair teacher.
Mr. Polley? yes. Linguistics as an online course? probably not, I think most concepts would have been easier to grasp if they were explained face to face. What specifically comes to mind is the chapter on articulatory phonetics.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He is one of the few professors who is passionate about what he does, teaching. Many of the professors that I have had in the past know their subject so well but they lack the passion that it takes to teach it to us students. Professor Polley is an outstanding teacher whose dedication to teaching has inspired me to want to learn this semester. I only wish there were more teachers like him, we lucked out. Thank you professor for such a great class!
Nice job
Makes linguistics more interesting and easier to understand.
He is just a very nice guy from what it seems from emails and class discussions.

18. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
everything
Where we had to learn more about other languages
The information learned from the textbook was very valuable, but very intense. It was sometimes a lot to take in, even in one week. The homework assignments were excellent ways to practice what we learned.
Everything.
The importance of language, at first I thought we should all just speak English, but I understand that all languages are equally important.
n/a
19. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
n/a
N/A
While I enjoyed the language observations, I felt these were the least valuable aspects of the course.
None
I felt all of it was pretty valuable.
n/a
20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
n/a
Nothing should be improved
I would only ask for more examples of work in the homework assignments.
None
He is a great teacher if you seek for his help.
Find an easier article to read or other means for learning phonetics.

21. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
passionate & dedicated
reasonable, kind, caring
Cool teacher
Helpful, lenient, awesome
Smart nice
fair understanding prompt
n/a
22. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
n/a
It was a good idea to have students split up the discussions due for the week, but I do feel like in some situations it is easier to meet the requirements within 1-2 posts.
500 words a week may be too much to be required
I liked the discussion sections, but a prompt or two (non-obligatory, but for guiding purposes mostly) would be nice
Nothing
none if all students participate in the discussion we could all learn more about the subject.
It seemed like a lot of people (myself included sometimes) would just write enough to get the points and not really read other peoples input, which doesn't really make it a discussion. It would have been interesting to have a few starting off thoughts or questions from Mr. Polley for each discussion so there was a conversation already in place before any students even got there.
