13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He really encourages everyone to interact with each other and respond to others thoughts and ideas.
very knowledgable on the subject!
Carl is very knowledgeable on the subject of Linguistics. He gives good feedback and clear instructions making it much easier and bearable to take a online class. He encourages a lot of questions and discussions to make sure everyone is on it and not left behind.
He is very open and easy to reach out to. He really wants his students to be successful and encourages them to ask questions.
As an online teacher, during discussions, he remained active and in tune with us throughout the semester. It was refreshing to see that he was involved in discussing subjects alongside us.
Professor Polley really knew the subject well and shared his knowledge with the class.
He knows the subject well and makes it very clear what he expects from the class. I didn't have any additional questions even though there were a lot of assignments to post, his syllabus was very detailed and answered any questions regarding homework.
He really knows the content well and does a good job responding back to students promptly.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Supplemental readings to help people who do not understand what they read in the textbook too clearly.
n/a
Maybe extending the assignments to Sunday since Friday feels short for those taking multiple summer school classes. Also, maybe grade the assignments in a more timely manner.
None
I wouldn't change much anything. He was engaged, and stay involved with all discussions and assignments.
I don't have any changes, it was a great class.
N/A
I do not suggest and changes.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He writes comments in grade books and once when I emailed him he emailed me back within a few minutes with much concern for my problem.
always telling us to email him if we had any concerns or questions on the assignment
He made sub-forums for any concerns and questions the students may have. He replies promptly to emails and forum questions, making sure any confusions are cleared of.
He was very encouraging in offering help to any students that needed it. He included in every e-mail he sent, to feel free at any time to e-mail him with questions or concerns.
He wrote in every single thread for our online class. He also emailed us, reminding us of assignments and deadlines.
He was free to answer any questions or concerns to assignments that were due.
He was very personable even though it was an online course. He always tried to reply to student's discussion posts even though he didn't have to. Also, once he posted the wrong due date (made it too late) for two homework assignments, but since he already said it could be due 1 week later than the intended due date, he let us turn it in by the later date.
He showed concern for students by writing encouraging messages in the discussion boards on the online forum and makes himself available to answer any questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes I would. This is my first online class but it seems well organized and easy to follow the assignments and their due dates.
yes because it was a fun class to take and very interesting
Yes, he assigns a fair amount of work and encourages a lot of participation and discussion. The work was fairly challenging, but not difficult, making it very doable. You're guarantee to learn at least a thing or two on linguistics.
Yes, he's very knowledgeable, fair, encouraging, and helpful.
I normally would never recommend an online class, but he is an exception. I would most definitely recommend him. It's hard as a student who likes to learn head on from a teacher in a classroom setting, to appreciate an online class. But due to the fact that he stayed rather involved throughout the entire semester, was refreshing.
I would recommend Professor Polley because he really knows this subject and he makes the subject easy to learn.
Yes, definitely! He is very nice and approachable, which is nice because especially in a class like linguistics, students have a lot of questions and it is key to feel comfortable to ask them all!
I would recommend him to other students because his class is very well organized and there are no surprises. He is fair and well educated.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
n/a
Great teacher, challenging but not too difficult WI. Makes the subject of linguistics bearable. The textbook is a little mundane.
All online teachers should be like you. Online classes, I would normally say are self taught because teachers just give assignments and grade your work. But due to the fact that you stay posted and available, and stayed involved was really nice. And basically what every online teacher should do.
N/A
I have really enjoyed his class.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is concern for students.
Knowledgeable about the subject & offers help to students by sending links with information pertaining to the topic they chose for papers.
Professor Polley organized the course very well.
Picks very interesting subject material. Addresses problems and answers questions very quickly.
Very organized.
I enjoyed this class more than I expected to. I learned a lot about the different types of Chinese poetry and the readings were so diverse!
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Too much discussion.
Please start grading assignments more promptly. It took almost a month to get back the midterm paper scores. It would also be nice if you made announcements more regularly and occasionally participated in the weekly discussions.
I think it would be best if you made weekly announcements, just to make sure everyone is aware of what's due and whatnot.
It's a bit confusing to submit assignments twice, once on the discussion board and once in the assignments. Perhaps divide them up so we'd only have to submit once each time.
Perfectly fine just the way it is.
N/A
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Help the students more understanding the course.
Not sure. Situation never arose.
Professor Polley responded to emails quickly and really communicated with the students, rather than just answer questions.
Answers questions, gives feedback, is prompt at putting up new content on board.
Offers help for any students, especially when we struggle with essays.
He made sure that the syllabus was clear and easy to understand. He reiterated the directions for our assignments many times and on each assignment to make sure that we fully understood the task at hand. He would also remind us of specific tasks we were in charge of.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
No.
Depends on the student. Some people can't handle classes where the teachers hardly intervene. I would only recommend this class to people who are able to remember and keep to deadlines themselves and can fully function with limited interaction with the teacher.
Yes, I would recommend Professor Polley to other students. He treats all students fairly, even though more than half the class were ESL students. I thought that was really nice.
Yes, if they like to read and write.
Yes, we get to read lots of interesting poems and novels.
I would definitely recommend Professor Polley's class! It was definitely Writing intensive but in a very enjoyable way! The directions for the assignments were so clearly explained and reiterated which made it a lot easier for me .
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you so much!
Professor Polley didn't grade things right away, but it was fine.
Impressive feat by juggling the work of having all these assignments and classes and dealing with your newborn.
Great professor!
18. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
No.
I think the discussion was the most valuable, especially the leader discussions. It was very important to involve the students as leaders of the discussions, and show us how hard all that responsibility can be.
The interaction between students. Although there was a lot of writing, I got a lot of learning about other people's perspectives.
The weekly discussions.
I liked everything.
19. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
No.
All the work was individual, no group projects. I think this made it a little harder to really connect with the other students, almost like we're all just a bunch of strangers at the end of the semester.
Perhaps the journals. There's quite a bit of writing to be doing in the class and because the journals aren't critiqued, they don't serve a lot of purpose except buffer writing.
I believe it is the Journal entries, because it can be repetitive and very similar to the class discussions.
20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
No.
Interact with the students more. Besides his first post to start the discussion topics, we hardly ever hear from him. I'm not even sure if he actually reads the discussion threads or not. Would be nice if he responded at least once a week.
I think weekly announcements/reminders would be nice. I think a group project would be nice as well.
The organization of some aspects of the board and assignments. It's nice that everything is spelled out, but I didn't like having to submit things twice.
Nothing in mind at the moment.
I wish Professor Polley would've participated in the weekly discussions, sharing his perspectives of the readings we read. It would've made the discussions more enlightening I think.
21. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Nice Helpful Smart.
Lenient Knowledgeable Helpful
Fair, nice, and helpful.
The college batman
Helpful, Organzied, Amazing!
22. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
Too much discussion, but it was good.
Again, post more! Interact with the students!
No changes, everything was really organized.
Not posting so much of the paper sections to the forums. The rough drafts are good for posting, but the rest of the sections don't seem to do much.
I believe that the minimum requirements for the discussion was a bit too much.
23. Other comments:
No.
Story time: When I went to check out the discussion threads one week, I noticed that Prof. Polley had actually posted something after the discussion leader. This was odd since he never spoke in the discussion threads. It turns out that he the student that was discussion leader of that week had plagiarized her post, and he was pointing that out. However, I feel like the manner he did it in was extremely unprofessional. He corrected her on the thread, public to the entire class. This matter should have been held in email or face-to-face format, away from the extra eyes and ears of the class. It is against the teacher code of ethics to humiliate any student in any way (esp. in front of a class). If that had happened to me, you'd better believe I would've reported it to the highest official I could find. As it is, I was tempted to report him for her. It seems like she is one of KCC's many exchange students, and she probably was too embarrassed to take any action herself. Next time, please handle such situations in a more professional manner.
Very nice class, very interesting.
Carl is hardworking. He can reply our email very quickly. Good teaching skill. Well organized syllabus.
Nope.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is clearly knowledgable, and is approachable, friendly, and supportive. He responds to emails and questions in a timely manner and shares relevant information with the entire class.
He knew the material really well and his students. He knows that with an online class kids tend to not do hw, so he extended a lot of assignments, and gave extensions to kids who had trouble like if they didn't have a working laptop.
Always available and very reasonable. Cares for the students and wants them to succeed.
I feel that Carl Polley's major strengths as a teacher are that he is an extremely effective communicator and that he is very supportive of his students. Professor Polley wants all of us to really succeed, he offers his assistance at all times and is available via email or telephone and responds in a timely manner. Professor Polley has gone over and beyond to reach out to all of us in his online class to offer his help if we needed it.
Good guy
Very helpful and wants his students to succeed and do well in his class.
He really understands that his class isn't the only thing students are committed to. I think that really encouraged learning (at least for me). He takes part in a lot of the Laulima discussions by offering clarification on confusing topics and his experiences relating to the topic.
n/a
he helps his students understand information clearer if they have any questions, he explains it in great detail.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Mostly I would ask for more examples for some of the homework assignments so that I can better gauge my progress and whether or not I'm actually doing what is asked of me. Also, explanations in more layman terms or more real-world examples
Some of the instructions for the assignments weren't clear, some assignments I turned in not knowing if I did it right or not. Clearer instructions asking specifically for what is needed to turn in would be better.
n/a
Sooooo much busy work
Update grades more often and frequently as assignments are turned in.
while I actually enjoyed my group I don't really think online courses and group projects go together! If I were to do this semester over again I would've taken this course in a classroom setting so I could have better worked with my group and had questions answered as we asked them. Not that Mr. Polley was slow to respond to emails but by the time a response was made we weren't in our group anymore... and we'd only meet up once a week for a couple hours, its been hard to really grasp linguistic concepts this way!
Nothing, he was very lenient
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Grading fairly, encouraging to complete all assignments, even if they were late. Always responded to emails and then shared relevant information and questions raised by other students will all of his students.
He extended assignments or pointed us in the right direction if we didn't know what to do.
Professor Polley continuously and frequently communicated with us that he was available via email or telephone if we needed his assistance. He informed us of any changes or updates. He expressed at all times throughout the semester that although some of us were struggling his main concern was that we comprehend the material that was being presented in class as opposed to just 'completing the work' and not understanding it.
Responded to emails
Informative emails and discussions on laulima.
Yes. He's changed the schedule at least once to allow us to focus on one assignment or another. He also allows resubmissions for most assignments.
n/a
He responded to emails very quickly
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would because he is knowledgable and fair. However, I felt a disconnect from the material because it was so technical, and this is a topic I have great interest in. I wish there had been more real-world examples to make it all relevant to our everyday lives.
I would if the student was very interested in the subject, do not recommend taking this class if you just need the credit you will fall behind.
Yes. Good experience in this writing intensive course.
Yes. Professor Polley's class is not the easiest and there is a lot of work to be done but I recommend his class because your really get a chance to learn the material, if and when you struggle he is always there to help clarify things.
Sure
Yes, he is very helpful and truly cares about the success of his students.
Yes yes yes. He's a really fair teacher.
Mr. Polley? yes. Linguistics as an online course? probably not, I think most concepts would have been easier to grasp if they were explained face to face. What specifically comes to mind is the chapter on articulatory phonetics.
Yes, because he was a very informative teacher
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He is just a very nice guy from what it seems from emails and class discussions.
He is one of the few professors who is passionate about what he does, teaching. Many of the professors that I have had in the past know their subject so well but they lack the passion that it takes to teach it to us students. Professor Polley is an outstanding teacher whose dedication to teaching has inspired me to want to learn this semester. I only wish there were more teachers like him, we lucked out. Thank you professor for such a great class!
Makes linguistics more interesting and easier to understand.

Nice job
18. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The information learned from the textbook was very valuable, but very intense. It was sometimes a lot to take in, even in one week. The homework assignments were excellent ways to practice what we learned.
The importance of language, at first I thought we should all just speak English, but I understand that all languages are equally important.

21. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Smart nice
reasonable, kind, caring

Helpful, lenient, awesome

n/a
Cool teacher
22. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
I liked the discussion sections, but a prompt or two (non-obligatory, but for guiding purposes mostly) would be nice
none if all students participate in the discussion we could all learn more about the subject.
It was a good idea to have students split up the discussions due for the week, but I do feel like in some situations it is easier to meet the requirements within 1-2 posts.
n/a
Nothing
It seemed like a lot of people (myself included sometimes) would just write enough to get the points and not really read other peoples input, which doesn't really make it a discussion. It would have been interesting to have a few starting off thoughts or questions from Mr. Polley for each discussion so there was a conversation already in place before any students even got there.
500 words a week may be too much to be required
