none i can think of o:
Nothing
no changes
none to date. she is a great teacher that looks forward to new sights and ideas. One of the best professors I have had in college.
Aside from organizing and scheduling her classes, theres not much changes necessary. They aren't exactly problematic to be exact but can be confusing at times.
Ms man should speed up her plans for the day since she tends to get side tracks and fall short on time
The schedule on the syllabus was a little off from what was actually done in class, but it didn't really affect the ability for us to learn.
No changes needed for the course.
Hopefully provide a writing intensive credit if possible. Otherwise it was a great class.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Any time I had to contact her for any reason she responded very quickly. I feel it's important for teachers to do this and doesn't happen enough.
she constantly lets us know that she is there to help with any assignments or projects before the due date to make sure it meets top standards
She helps them better their grades
she explains her pics well and presents them so that it is not boring
When students struggle with quizzes she insures them, us we could only do better. That mistakes happen and we just have to try. Even with presentations with every negative she gives a positive. She notices effort and appreciates curiosity and respects opposing opinions or any in general.
When it came to our final presentation project, she always helped by giving me advice on the subject i should decide on.
Yes, she wants us to be involved in all discussions and includes certain activities that encourages the class to talk and get to know each other.
She was always respectful for our time and is willing to help us. She's very open to everything especially during her lectures.
She always told us the due dates. Was available to meet for any questions.
She helped by offering her office hours and made appointments with students to help them see where they are in projects.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Her teaching style was great. As opposed to simply repeating or rephrasing exactly what we'd read in the textbook, she allowed us to think for ourselves, and give our own opinions, which gave me a better understanding of the course material.
I think Professor's strengths as a teacher is being on top of things. I am able to see how I am doing in class because she usually has scores on assignments already up. I also like how she had everything we were going to do in the course in a detailed manner in our syllabus. Referring back to it during assignments instead of having to email her all the time has been very useful.
When I have a question, she answered really fast and explain very well so I could know exactly . Also, her corse slabus was very clear, so I could make a plan a lot.
She knows very well about the subject she is teaching. Also, she is a caring teacher and willing to help if students needed.
Communicating well with students and informing them of their weekly tasks.
Very nice and responds to emails promptly
Compassion.
She is very good at organizing and presenting information about music for the class. I thought it was very thoughtful of her to include Hawaiian music in the first week. I thought it was a good way of making students feel engaged in the class and it was interesting to learn of the music that is happening on the island we are on.
Giving us assignments that really challenge us to think about other cultures. It's not just textbook work, it also involves attending cultural events that solidify what we learn in the textbook.
Clear directions and interesting assignments.
She gives us plenty of time to do assignments and she is so nice that she gave me some extensions on work
I love that she is very kind and takes the time to answer questions if I had any to ask her. Her syllabus is also clear and detailed so that is really nice to have as a student throughout the semester to look back on from time to time.
I cant tell
Being an online class, there was not much teaching. It was more like; here are the assignments and they are due on this day. We had to read and listening to everything ourselves.
She cares about her students
Very organized, clear subjects.
Very prompt in setting up the homework material each week. Always communicated to us the deadlines, so we didn't miss out.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
One suggestion I have would probably for her to set up meetings with us. Since we are an online class, we don't get that face to face contact and so I think it would help her and us if we got to meet with her at least once for a mandatory meeting.
it is very stressful sometimes to have 2 papers due in the same day with the 2 posts on discussion messages. Other than that, I am okay with her class.
NONE
None.
I would maybe consider reformatting all the requirements for the final there was alot to do! Also, the event analysis papers were a bit hard to do since there was only a handful of events we could attend.
?
Nothing
The only change I suggest is to maybe remind the students in the announcement that all the assignments are due this week at **Thursday at 6pm** so that there isn't any confusion. Other than that, Man Yang is a great teacher with a sweet personality.
Neutral
interact with your students even though its an online course
Nothing
In the beginning, get to know you a little bit better as my instructor. The journey of how you became a teacher in this subject.
She should open the Forums earlier since it's online class. Email back to students. She need to give students more clear direction.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Towards the end of the semester, we had a little bit of miscommunication, but she was more than fair when it came to resolving the issue.
She shows concern by emailing us all the time what the assignment for the week is and what is due (in regards to papers, drafts, etc.) and she gives us opportunities for extra credit work.
she reply to me kind of fast.
I remembered that I accident drop the class before, but she is willing to help me get back to her class. this is an online class so I don't really have a chance to meet Professor Yang much.
Always available to be contacted and replies efficiently
Since this was an online class, she lets students know if they have any questions that we can email her.
Understanding.
She is very prompt and understanding when an assignment is late. It shows her dedication to education rather than grades.
Yes, she shared scholarship opportunities with us.
Good responses to assignments.
By having office hours and listening to students needs
She answered questions when asked.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, she seems very passionate about her subject, and I really liked the course itself.
Yes! Her classis very clear, and fun.
I would definitely recommend Professor Yang to other students. Although online class is more difficult to learn through, I feel that I have learned a lot through the assignments we had to do. And also because she is fair and seems to care about how we are doing (school wise).
Yes, I would recommend Man Yang to students because she is a very nice teacher.

Nothing. All good
Yes, the online course was VERY VERY VERY convenient. I like how every week we knew what to expect for the layout of the material. Every Sunday we would see the new post for that week and what was expected.
No. Not a very hard work teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you so much for your patience with me. I apologize for the misunderstanding! I honestly wish I had met you in person before, I really enjoyed getting a chance to talk with you face-to-face!
I would like to say that I have learned a lot about music, cultures, and instruments throughout this course. And that she is a fair grader and I enjoy the rigor of the course.
I like her class so far. She gave a lot of work to do but I think it's alright for me. Even though sometimes it is so stressful having lots of homework from her class dues in the same week.
She is great
Mahalo!
She seems like a very nice lady.
Very involved with the community and campus events. She even did a demonstration of Indonesian instruments for the KCC campus.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She is extremely well rehearsed in what she teaches and cares a lot about her students. Also she is very beautiful!
She always keeps lectures interesting and her students' attention by introducing various interesting music genera from all over the world. She is very smart and knows her subject area very well, although she is still a student at UHM.
Speaks well and is easy to understand
She shows her knowledge in the subject she is teaching, and explains her points thoroughly. She made learning very fun and interesting.
She encouraged us for the classes and prepared the class all the time
Making class fun with her outgoing personality (:
her class's atomosphere was good for learning. and she knows about music a lot.
Her class always felt like a group activity, which is nice.
Friendly atmosphere for students. Very organized. Stuck with the syllabus. Taught subject in an effective way.
Professor Yang knew the course material and was able to teach it very clearly. She was also able to meet with me outside of class to go over materials I missed in previous classes.
She is a really good teacher. I'm glad I took her class. She explains WELL so I could understand well during her class. Sometimes I couldn't understand other teacher's speaking. So I like her class
She is able to present topics in a clear way and she made the topic or subject very easy to understand.
she is aware of the course she is teaching.
She made me feel welcomed
She knows her subject area perfectly; thus she was able to teach us well.
I think her major strength is like her mind because during the class, she tried to discuss with her students. For that reason, I can concentrate on her class more and more.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The way she responds to some of the students comments may come off as dismissive, but I whole-heartedly feel that she doesn't mean to come off that way.
Her lectures sometimes exceed the class time. I had another class right after her class so I would appreciate if she can finish her class just within the time limit.
More extra credit
No suggestions, but I guess if I had to say one, maybe just bring in more instruments to show the students but other than that it was a great class.
No need
None
Make all assignments worth a little more. For example Reading notes:5 Music Identity:10 Event analysis/ Film Analysis: 15 Quiz/Power point presentation: 20 Research Paper: 30 Just an example, but point system should be changed slightly.
The only change for her class I would suggest is the grading/point system. I feel that assignments should be worth more than one point and that the final paper and presentation should be worth more. The final is worth just as much as a quiz and that seems a little off because the final paper is supposed to be at least 6 pages long.
Well, I'm satisfied her class so I don't want to ask her to change.
I believe that there are none so far because she has done an outstanding job.
none
It would have been cool to actually see all the instruments of the different musics.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Personal meetings with students and always asking her class if they need help.
She told us when things were due
She was very understanding with every students situation and didn't give us a hard time if we needed compromising within the schedule.
She takes care of students for understanding and she welcomed to visit her office and when the students have some questions, she always answers to them well.
Told the whole class at once that attendance, studying, and doing work on time is very important because there's such little time that if you ever fall down then it would be somewhat hard to get all the way to the top.
she reminded us to do assignments and the due of the assignments. so we did not miss any assignments.
If we did not show active participation, she would worry if we did not understand the material.
She was more than happy to meet up with me to go over the past material needed to study for the quizzes
When I sent her e-mail for some questions, she answered as soon as possible. I could see it she really care for her students
I believe that she showed concern for students by reminding them of due dates and test dates.
To let them know how crucial the assignments are to their grade.
She would ask us how we are doing
She always smile and kind to students.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, of course. There are too many reasons why I would recommend her.
Yes! Her lectures are fun and easy to follow. Quizzes are fairly easy and the listening part is interesting as well.
Yes because she's very funny and teaches very well
Yes, I learned a lot from this class even though I was nervous at first because I thought it was going to be a hard class to take. She explained things thoroughly and made it fun to learn.

Yes because she is a good teacher and i did learn alot but sometimes the subject matter got boring.
I would recommend because she has a lot of knowledge about her subject, so when students ask some questions, she gives good answers. Also, her methods of teaching is great. students can understand well.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
point out the mistakes while students playing and help them fix it
She is very nice.
find out the mistakes while students playing and help them fix it.
she have strengths musicalityã??
Nice
She is very good at letting her student know how they can improve and get better
Very good at piano.
Professor Yang has many strengths as a teacher but one notable strength of hers that I have noticed, would have to be being an excellent communicator. Professor Yang has the ability to be able to analyze each student, and know how much knowledge he/she has in music, and from there she would find the best way to teach and help us improve our piano skills, in the most comfortable way, without it being too easy, or too difficult.
She gives all the students including me time and effort in learning how to play the piano and in due time we can play beautiful music.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no suggestions
no suggest
no suggestã??
Should try pair up students to play duets
Nothing it's a very solid class
None
Maybe in any future Music 121 classes, you could have students pair up with someone and have them try to learn a duet piece that they could play together. Not only would it teach them to play the piano as a duet, but it may also encourage the class to get closer and get to know each other better.
nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
talk to students one by one, and ask them if any she can help
One by one to teach student
one by one to teach studentsã??
personal coaching
She told student that they can see her outside of the class if they need help
Gave us opportunity to come in to her office and tutor us.
Professor Yang shown concern for students by being able to communicate with each one of us, getting to know what level we were at in playing the piano, and tending to each students abilities. She knows that everybody does not learn at the same rate and with the same style, so if we ever had trouble with trying to learn something, she would suggest different techniques at doing it, in order to make it easier and more comfortable for us. She was also available outside of class either during her office hours or by appointment, which really helps if you needed extra coaching, especially for the final recital.
She gave everyone time in her office to speak to her and time within class to make up and be heard upon what we need to catch up on and what we need to learn more of.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, she is an excellent teacher, I have fun in her class
i would recommended Man Yang because she's a good teacher, and teach well.
i would like to recommend Man Yan to student. she is a good teacher. she listen and teach the student one by one.
yes i would recommend Man Yangï¼?becuase she is good teacher ï¼?and very helpful me
YES best class I have ever have.
Yes, she is a very talented teacher and I would want friends to also expire nice that
Yes because she very good at piano and will teach you nicely.
I would definitely recommend Professor Yang to other students for Music 121, as I believe she is a very good teacher, as well as a very good pianist. Her skills as a teacher and a pianist makes for a good class that you can use to improve your piano skills. She is very encouraging, which I feel is one of the main things needed to improve yourself in any way.
Yes, because she is a very good teacher and she is patient to all of us when we are playing slow or too fast. She gives you a whole lot of chances to catch up or make up what you miss in class.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
thanks for teaching me in this semester

She is very good at emailing back
She is very organized.
She clearly writes what is assigned to the students.
Flexible and always accountable when asking for help
Even though it's an online class, she organized well about our all subjects and also gave me some responses when I asked all the time.
Online class was very enjoyable. It was easy to understand and get through the semester without any trouble.
Interesting projects
she is very helpful and cares about the students
Dunno, but I hear she's super nice (this was an online class)
Passionate about what she teaches & very kind
Mrs. Yang is a kind and compassionate teacher. She is knowledgeable in World Music, and enjoys teaching.
She clearly explains about assignment
I enjoyed your music class. Thank you!!
She knows about her specialties.
She is understanding and very intelligent on the subject
This is an online class therefore we have to read the textbook to learn. However I had took her ASAN100 class last semester and I think her teaching methods are great.
music history and background
She is very organized and prompt. Regardless of having a baby in the middle of the semester, not once have I felt that she abandoned the class. SHe must have planned it out ahead of time. Which to me, shows responsibility.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
nothing
Sometimes, maybe, switching up the questions? Or finding a new way to present a summary of the chapter for the weekly posts.
pay more attention to student emails, because some students need help.
I prefer that grades were returned earlier because I didn't have enough time to revise them.
Make directions/instructions clearer and possibly create a rubric for the assignments, especially the final paper because it was unclear what was wanted.
Idk, anything I can complain about I think she does in the actual class, maybe don't be pregnant anymore? (joke)
None
None
She is so good however sometimes it is hard to contact her
Too much to write even though it is not the WI class. Although this is the online class, I think it was better we learn something from her using powerpoint or something, for example.
None
I think because this class didnot have any quizes or tests, she had us write film analysis and 2 event reports. I think it was a little too much, because I had other classes to write for and it made me a lot more stressed out~
No changes.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
weekly announcements
She replied to emails with questions and concerns.
By clearly showing assignments and what is required.
She would check in every week and would send out reminders
When we emailed with questions, she usually got back to us.
Easy to contact
Always available to contact & willing to work through situations
Mrs. Yang was available via her office hours, phone, and email. She encouraged us to participate with other students.
She sent e mail for students' assignment due date
She made sure the assignment was understandable to everybody
She answers student's questions
you remind us about the homework
She always left comments to improve our work.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes because shes awesome
Yes because she is an organized teacher and has her lessons set out for the semester. Also, I enjoyed the narrative powerpoint that was required of us. It is a nice way to learn about other cultures that maybe werenʻt in the text book.
I would, but i would also warn students to be cautious as to weather or not they can study independently.
Yes, very nice.
Strongly recommend! coz she cared about students enough even an online class!
I think it depends on the person because everyone learns differently. Like I had a hard time because I need clear instructions and I need to know what is wanted, but my friend Anela might like this class because it would allow her to experiment and push the envelope a little.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Well organized!
She knows what she teaches
She knows her content on Asian Studies very well!
The teacher knew her subject area really well and taught us a lot about that subject in class. She knew about what to teach us and even use videos to show us what we're learning.
She knows how to relate to a students point of view because she was recently a student.
Keeping students focus
Giving lectures and informing students on upcoming quizzes and assignments.
She lets the students know exactly what we need to know and teaches us those things.
She makes classes fun and entertaining
She is a great speaker and know a lot of things
She gave us a lot of good information. She also encouraged us to speak up every class, she always tried to get us engaged with the lessons. We were a really shy class in the beginning but I think thanks to her, by the end of the class we all were more friendly towards each other.
She is well-informed of the subject and can go in-depth on sub categories of the topic she is talking about. She is also caring to students and offers extra credit so they have a chance to raise their grades.
She has a positive personality that welcomes a positive classroom setting.
Her strengths was her knowledge of the subject. She knew many aspects of the diverse cultures in asian history.
she has done a lot of lesson of each topic with well organized skills!
She knew the important facts of the Asian countries well.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The textbook for the class was unnecessary
Nothing
I would have liked to have seen a little more about East Asia
Just keep reminding students of upcoming due dates. Also, the study guides for quizes are given jus t a few days before the quiz. It would be nice if it was earlier.
none.
Be more technological prepare
Having a quiz at least once a week.
None.
Maybe an ice breaker game in the beginning of the semester
I would suggest putting the lecture power points on laulima so students can access it to study for their tests. It would also be helpful if the power points were a little more detailed.
Quizzes, the quizzes are killing me in this class.
Suggestions that I have is to have more emphasis on the important material during the lectures and not only in the book. More in class activities to have the class more active and engaging during class.
More activity
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Asking questions
Wanted to meet with every student to talk about Research paper, even if they already knew what they were going to be writing about
She kindly stayed after class if you had any questions.
She showed concern by always sending out emails which is good and informing us about a lot of opportunities to learn more about the subject through hands on events.
She meets individually with her students during her office hour to check on their progress with the final paper.
Offer her time to help students by sending there papers to her so she can look over it before the due date
By always informing us to meet with her after class, or by sending emails. Great communication.
She would always ask if we didn't understand something or needed help.
Had a one on one meeting for final project to dicuss and concerns
She made sure that if we had any questions to bring it up with her. She also made us meet with her to make sure we were all on the same pg.
She replied back quick in her emails about any concerns or questions we had and always updates us on any chance to receive extra credit. She is also a quick grader and keeps us informed when any changes to the grade book is done so students can keep track of their grades.
Inviting them to talk to her anytime if they need help.
She would always be willing to help her students on upcoming assignments or anything discussed in the lecture material.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She cares about her students. She has a broad knowledge about the different cultures music and present the musics to us uniformly, i.e.,she didn't show any prejudice or favoritism, she didn't say one type of music is better than the other. She presented the information in a very neutral way.
She knew what she was teaching and she was able to help me when I didn't understand something and was there to see me.
-She is always carrying a positive attitude -She questions the class to encourage reading the assignment chapters at home
A lot of in class examples of music which was great
She knew her her materials well and encouraged student participation. She wanted to make sure for all of us to pitch in our thoughts. In class, she always made sure that we understood the things we covered in class.
Very enthusiastic and interactive. She encouraged us to participate and not just listen to lecture.
She makes learning about music fun and presents material in a way that is easy to understand and interesting to learn about.

She explains things well and it helps that she is excited about what she is teaching.
Her knowledge in the field
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
We didn't cover some of the chapters in the book, such as the music of Europe, Caribbean, Native American, and North America, but instead we spent plenty of time on Hawaiian music. Maybe it's because we're in Hawaii. But Western music is a big influence to a lot of different cultures, so I would recommend covering that, especially since this is a cultural music class and a lot of people from Hawaii have not travel much and may not be familiar with Western (European) style music.
I don't think I would change anything from this course.
-Show up to more classes on time
None...
The only change I could think of is to maybe teach about more popular music that everyone can kind if relate to.
Nothing
For the structure of exams, maybe it would be better to have the listening examples first, that way the students can take their time on the multiple choice scantron portion. Also, for the ethnic music presentation, I think that ten minutes is a little too long.
N/A She is absolutely an excellent teacher!
she can speak more loudly.
N/A
I think just add some other lesson like music from other countries that people never heard of
Get the students involve more, have more interaction things.
Some changes I suggest that Professor Yang make is to go over the study guide before tests.
Continue to teach after she gives birth
None
nothing
I can't think of anything that I would suggest to Ms. Yang. Everything went very well with this class.
No changes.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She advises students to seek help and to plan accordingly. She encourages those who need help to make an appointment with her. She reminds us of the various deadlines, not just for the class, but for the UH system as a whole.
She talked to whoever she felt needed the help and was always open to seeing them before or after class to make sure they ware all caught up.
-She reminded them of her office hours
She made sure we knew our materials and took the time to answer our questions in class.
She always made herself available for questions either in class, after class or by email. She was also very approachable and understanding.

She would talk to the student after class.
Professor Yang showed concern for her students by interacting with the students with showing her instruments in class, taught us a dance when there was a section we learned about, and suggested a lot of extra credit.

She emailed students consistently and sent out reminders ahead of time. She also offered a lot of help during class and her office hours.

The culture of difference countries
We could really trust her with the subject. She seems to really love world music and it was fun learning it from her.
She know's exactly what to do, she has great knowledge in what she teaches, she gets her students involved and doesn't make them feel uncomfortable, she has a great sense of humor. Overall Ms.Yang is one of my favorite professors I have had this semester. She's a very wonderful individual.
She knows what she is teaching and knows her area very well. She helps student and help her student to success in the class. Really good teacher.
she is very intelligent, straight to the point, and encourages student to participate in class. she makes the class going in an interesting way. she is very considerate.

She is clearly deeply involved in the subject of world music, and encouraged from the outset for the students to have an open mind. She was able to take completely foreign arts and give an understanding or context to them so that the class could see it in a different light. She has great student participation activities like playing various ethnic instruments or learning a hula, as well as assignments that encouraged the students to go out and attend world music events.
Mrs. Yang's major strength as a teacher would be teaching her material.
very organized, shared interesting information
She is so kind. She always responses to students' questions until students can understand and solve their unclear points. Also, she always prepares many sources to teach. Students can understand easily about her lectures through her well preparing.
She is very smart and very sweet.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none, except more time on presentations
None
No changes are needed.
Elaborate more on topics rather than around the bush.
Nothing really
I don't have any suggestions to make any changes. I like the way she teaches her class.
Perhaps make the final worth more (20pts), offer more EC opportunities (1-5pts), discuss assignments first (taking reading notes BEFORE the chapter lecture was not very helpful, in my opinion). Should also touch-base with students individually.
none
I liked that we got to playbon instruments and liked if we did that more.
I have nothing for Ms.Yang to change, she's doing a great job
No
none. she's very good as a teacher.
I can't think of a way to help you with this but i'd suggest you to try and make class more exciting and something to look forward to each day because at times, it got very boring. I still learned but it was boring and made me sleepy sometimes. I apologize for that but if there's a way you could pump up the class, i'd suggest you make an attempt at it.
none
I think that she does not have to change anything.
Add a little more variety to classes. Please don't make us just analyze timbre and organology.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she was nice
Be patiently to teach her students in her office hour until the student understand it.
She's trying very hard to figure out each answers that students propose. Pretty understanding!
Her office was always open to her students that needed any help.
Didn't really.
She was more than welcome to help any student who needed it. If you needed extra credit or if you needed one on one time you could see her at her workshop.
She told the whole class that if we are struggling with learning the material or preparing for quizzes we can see her during her office hours.
The professor had office hours.
consistent reminders about assignments and events.
clear instruction pervide
Explain in detail
she encouraged us to participate in class.
She's constantly asking us if we have any questions or comments or even concerns about something, and if so, she makes time for them after class
She helps student when they need help, and help more than I ask.
she would email back regarding a note why i couldn't make it to class and she emails students regarding any changes and upcoming events for our class.
Whenever students don't understand the material, she is there to lend a hand. When students ask her questions about our topic that are unclear, she would try her best to answer those question in a simple way.
She always made class discussion open for everyone and answered questions directly. She also made sure that the class knew when every assignment was due, how to use research resources, and how to prepare for quizzes.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She pushed me to try harder, even though I thought I couldn't or complained. She said to keep trying and practicing and eventually I will get it. She didn't modify things which made me feel like she really thought I could do it.
Very nice, she is always willing to help and work with you.
As an instructor, she is very knowledgeable about the course. I have always felt comfortable in class as she has provided a positive atmosphere conducive to learning. She shows great concern for all of her students and is very personable and easy to talk to. I have always been able to come to her without any hesitation if I had questions or needed help. Her strengths include, but is not limited to, course knowledge, artistry, a high standard of technicality, and the ability to communicate, demonstrate, and clarify materials covered in class.
caring, good teacher, patient, clear, knowledgeable
She is very nice and understandable.
Man Yang was my teacher in my first semester in college and I consciously sought out another class with her as I not only enjoy music but her method of teaching which is very kind and encouraging to me as a freshman student and strong in that you see her expertise and feel that her strength comes from great preparation and forethought. As it took courage to finally go to college, I have found Ms. Yang to be an inspiring role model as I pursue my college degree. She really goes the extra mile to take note of each students needs and how she can help them improve. Her stream of encouraging words is the water that helps this little first year seedling grow as a college student.
She is very understanding and patient. She loves to help students even if it means to stay after class.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
N/A
Although the course is focused on individual learning. I found it useful to partner up with classmates during down time. As Ms. Yang does her best to attend to all students, I think it would be beneficial to many of students to help each other, while waiting for her to attend them. Other than that, the course is fine just the way it is.
None, great class :)Fun, interesting the way taught. Challenging but enjoyable. I learned a lot.
It would be great if she can give out hand out of each music notes in the begining of the class and make us memorize it on and regonize it on the music sheet and on the keyboard. So that it would help us later on to be able to read notes quicker.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She gives out extra credit opportunities and she always stays after class to help out. She gives out good advice.
She will help students any time they need help with music or fingering or anything.
She showed each student individual attention and has given them feedback when needed. She has also allowed second opportunities for students. And, she has gone above and beyond to help students simplify complicated material.
Stayed late after class to work longer with students. Contacted students who stopped showing up to class
Man Yang really listens to each of her students. She made special efforts at the beginning of the year in both classes I've taken from her to help the students get to know each other and break the ice. This really helped a lot as so often students retreat into their cell phones the minute class ends. I've noticed her extra effort has brought more student communication and I think this makes the college experience more complete. She offers make-up tests in her office and is available for counseling on class work and has stayed 10 minutes after class helping me where I was stuck in an assignment. She is a very devoted teacher and I feel fortunate to have her for my first piano class.
Her office hours are almost everyday which make her very accessible.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes! She cares for the students and she treats everyone equal.

She is direct and state students weak points.
she is nice and passionate.
She is so kind and her explan is really good.
She is a very good piano player
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Having the final recital before our last quiz was a little weird it was okay, I would have rather had it reversed. A lot of us students took too much time to practice the final instead of the quiz songs and some did bad in the last quiz.
not only to Man Yang but also other music teachers: it would be nice and more efficient if the school installs a camera which is able to film the teacher when he or she plays a piece of music. If so, the students can look at the teacher playing at the same time and learn from that.
N.A
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She went to every student and asked them if they needed help, and she asked to hear our progress with songs

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Her lectures were always well-organized and whenever students asked questions about the lectures, she gave us a easily understandable answer to it.
Her explanation is always very clear. She knows how to avoid boring atmosphere so we could enjoy some workshops and students' presentations as well.
she is very kind, and understanding. she is also knowledgeable about each different theme she went over.
She's had a very inclusive class. Music analysis with personal opinions, she brought instruments to class and let us handle them, group discussions, and activities on rhythm, dance and the International Festival.
She delivers the content of her classes very clearly and makes it very easy to understand.
Knowing her stuff. Being an awesome person.
Professor Yang is well educated about music. She communicates with the students very effectively and is clear on the topics in which she presents in class. She is always accessible via email and in person and makes absences, make up work and understanding easily accessible to her students. She is great with updated her students via email about performance opportunities so that they can make extra credit points. Overall, she is a very good professor.
very organized contents with appropriate media resources, so her classes were easy to understand.
Her major strengths are making sure each student understands the material well. She provides a lot of visuals and audio for learning purposed and makes everything interesting and fun to learn.
Explains subject in a simple way! made it easer for students to understand. She Knows her subject well, and she listens to students too!
she is nice and professional. knows how to help and respect her students.
Openness, honesty, organization, care.
Her lectures were very clear and well organized.
She got along with everyone is class and set a good atmosphere in class. She encouraged participation in class,
Immediately, I was won over to this teacher's kind and graceful manner. Her love of music and ethnomusicolgy is clear and she makes it easy for the class to enjoy each culture. I am excited to tell my landlord when I pay rent that I know what Pansori music is! Music is central to my life, so I enjoyed every aspect of this class but heretofore -as a multi-tasking single mom had never given myself permission to learn about music in world cultures. It has affected my songwriting and composition for the better, I think.
she loves music, know about it very much. also she helps students ver much.
She has a wide range of instrumebts, some of which we got to see physically. We attended special musical genres, and she is also very approachable, friendly.
She seems open to showing many cultures with out judgement.
Tutorial, good explanation.
She knows how to make a class fun
She knows what to teach during the lecture.
Makes the class fun by bringing in hands on activities.
Passion, understanding, wealth of information and guidance to resources, awesome personality.
Professor Yang knew the subject area very well. She is also well organized which helped with the classes. I liked how she provided examples of instruments and made us think for ourselves.
I thought it was really helpful how she didn't provide the lecture notes on Laulima. Copying the notes by hand were helpful in a way because it helped me recall information more easily. I also enjoyed days where we learned how to dance hula and bollywood dances. Study guides for quizes were also helpful in times of quizes.
She is very enthusiastic and passionate about her course subject. Also, she is very educated in the matter and always knows how to answer our questions or point us in the right direction to finding the answer.
She has great activities. Her powerpoint are easy to follow.
She is very well organized and prepare. She is also prompt when it comes to updating grades.
she fair
She make her lectures very interesting by telling her own experience on the music field.
She gives a fun atmosphere for students to learn. She often joke with her students but still makes a point on the lecture being discussed. She has her schedule that she follows, which can make student do advance work and not cram.
she knew what she was talking about and made it a good learning experience for me in her class
Man yang gives good lectures that followed according to the exams.
She's really nice! Also, very knowledgeable about her field of study.
Beryl's strengths came majorly in the form of enthusiasm, passion, and knowledge of her subject. It was so exciting to come to class each day, because I know she has something awesome to teach me. Granted, this is entirely a fabulous section of education - where else do we get to analyze and learn about musical influence through world cultures?! Her passion was contagious, and encouraged me to keep at it, because there's always something awesome to learn. Also, she is very empathetic to us, having been a long time student herself. It seems many teachers, once they're not students anymore, forget how stressful it can be to try to manage everything all at the same time. However, she was very understanding with all of our needs.
Great professor, knew her stuff, and thought us really well. I learned a lot from her.
Showing us good examples to have a better understanding of the topic.
Professor Yang is a very kind hearted, very well oriented professor with her students, her material, and everything she did with our class. She was very informative and fun and being a PHD student she was very aware of how we felt as students and adapted her material towards us which was very nice in our opinion. I really enjoyed having her as my professor for this class.
She really knew the material and it was great that she provided hands on activities and active activities as well as samples of instruments.
Very knowledgeable in the subject. Makes it easy to learn.
She is fun and knowlegable about the music class she is teaching.
She is very helpful and kind, and talented as a musician herself. Her love of ethnomusicology pours through in her class teaching.
She knows the subject she teaches well, very engaging, fair grader, and passion for what she teaches shows in each lecture.
Professor Man Yang is a young teacher so she was very easy to approach if i ever had any questions. I really enjoyed the classes when we had to hands on class dancing. I personally really enjoyed that and I hope she continues to keep that music 107 tradition. It really brings a lot of life into our academic day. The hula dancing and bollywood dancing exercises was a lot of fun. She was always available outside of class during his office hours. She always encourage us to seek help if we ever had any questions. She was teacher that definitely showed a lot of concern for her students and always wanted the best for them.
She is really fair teacher. She is soooooooo nice teacher. I love her very much.
Her passion for the subject taught, and how she has the class participate in discussions.
good power points
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no
none
Maybe create a google document with a collection of youtube and other media examples of muisc we haven't been able to cover in class.
No changes.
Less chat and more music listening.
None.
None
she is good
None, the class was a joy to come to.
I don't think there should be any changes, this semester was fun and i enjoyed her class.
can't think of anything. her kind and gentle manner are an inspiration for me to be more gentle and quiet myself.
nothing.
further explanation of computer systems used and compatibility, for the older student, would be helpful.
Nothing, she does a great job.
No change, everything perfect
nothing really, i loved her class
Less lectures
No Changes as to say on how the subject is being thought, but here is a thought to consider. I believe in the syllabus it does not mention it but, how this course should be described a little more and inform the student that the approach on culture by the means of studying culture through, ritual music, deity worship of various nationalities. just to consider those who do not want to participate in such practices.
Passing around the sign-in sheet right when class starts
None. Her course is superb.
no
no change
no she i a awesome teacher i was glad to learn form her
I can't really think of any.
Keep at it, and maybe be a little more aggressive in asking for student participation. I feel awful, my class was so so so quiet when it came to class discussions. Sometimes I felt like I was the only one participating. I think with a little more encouragement (maybe a greater amount of points placed on class participation?) the class may chip in a little more.
more hands assignment. say like when we learned how to dance and stuff, i like when we did that it made it more fun and interesting
No changes are needed.
None she was great.
none
none
I can't think of any changes if anything the more hands on dancing would be better for the class and make it even more interesting.
No thing to suggest because he is perfect already.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
We had great chance to understand various music with some experiences, such as dancing or listening to live music.
if help was needed it was given, in times of emergencies she was understanding and helped you through it. if things needed a deeper explanation she helped you to understand.
Gentle questions, emails reminding about missed assignments, and invitations to come see her after class or during her office hours.
She made her time available for any students who needed help with anything, and she always attempted to her lectures interesting, so students wouldn't get bored.
Responding right away to emails. Meeting up outside of class for extra help.
Professor Yang is the most concerned and understand professor I have had so far since attending KCC. I had a really rough few weeks where i consistently missed class because of family health issues at home, and she would email me to check in and let me know what i missed and my graded being affected. She always kept me updated with performances and opportunities for improvement, and she is very straight forward with her intent to help her students succeed in her class. Although i may pass this class with a low grade due to my personal issues, there is no way i could be upset with her because she is such a caring women and wants the best of her students. -Dwayne :)
She did a few ice breaker games so give us a chance to meet our classmates. She also encouraged hands on participation.
She encorages us to do things! She answers all the questions with her patience! She tell us to see her in the office oftenly.
she creats chances for students to get extra points. she always asks us if we understand or not , and asks us for suggestion. i aksed her for help which is not related to her job, she helped me, and give extra information and suggestion.
She was very encouraging, learned student's names, gave lots of extra credit, straightforward powerpoints and study guides, gave loads of helpful announcements and emails.
She always brought her speakers to lectures. It helped us to listen example of music when class speakers did not work. She also, brought many music instuments.
She encouraged students, especially if the student was shy or scared she made it easy to talk and participate in class.
in many, many ways. she is always answering students questions after each class and gives so much of her time.
she is always here for help us.
Making extra time out of class. Involving us as a groupYes
Always checking in with us to make sure we understand.
She take times for us if we have question or need helps.
She always reminded us to do things and always answered our questions right away if we were to email her
She always seem to be happy to help out students.
Always giving us extra credit opportunities
all ways attentive, concerned asking us if the information given was understood and if anyone had any question, also offered her office hours.
She gave us many extra credit opportunities and was available for help whenever we needed.
She tell us about assiginments every week and always emails us with notifcations.
tells grade
she would tell them if they need help to go see her or email her questions
She offered time after class to help students, and also replied to emails very quickly.
She was so awesome! She was so patient with all of us, and the awkward silences in the class, without being angry or upset with us for our lack of participation. I feel that she really knows what we're going through. It's so fantastic to have a young, hip teacher like her expanding our minds. It really felt like a very well organized lunch date, with lots of great topics to discuss. It was very friendly, with the perfect mix of casual and formal settings.
She always made sure to tell us about our assignments and if we did bad on something to check up with her and make sure everything was okay.
She often looked at the bright side of situations, an example of this would be say a student was not doing good at the beginning of the semester she often attempted to cheer them on and encourage them to work harder as she explained that the semester is far from over.
Informed us of deadlines ahead of time, was very accessible to students (answered emails quickly and explained all that was expected of us)
She was always available outside of class during his office hours. She always encourage us to seek help if we ever had any questions. She was teacher that definitely showed a lot of concern for her students and always wanted the best for them.
She is concerned about students very much. She tries to encourage students listen to difference culture music.
She would write comments next our grades in the gradbook on laulilma.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Music World Culture
She really knew each cultures musical area well!
She is very understanding and receptive.
Man Yang knew her material well and always came to class eager to teach her students .
She truly encouraged the students to think for themselves and discuss certain topics among their peers. Although the students in the class were not too willing to participate, she never gave up and truly made the class a fun environment to learn.
She is very knowledgeable about on the subject. She seems like she enjoys the subject and is passionate about it.
Her major strength is getting everyone to participate in class so no can ever fall asleep and keeps you learning the lesson.
She tries to get everyone to get involved in our class discussions
She is a very outgoing teacher that encourages people to get to know each other in the classroom. She shows concern for her students by helping them do whatever is possible to gain extra points as well as give advice on where to go for certin assignments.
Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was that she created a fun learning experience that made me want to learn more. She knew a lot on the subject at hand which made it easier for the class to learn.
I think she did great as a teacher. She always encourages us to participate in activities in class and is always prepared during her lectures.
knows what shes talking about.
Everything. Loved the class!
she obviously knew what she was talking about when she was teaching and she tryed to work with an early morning class that consisted of people who werent all that interested in talking. she always seemed up beat and never really discouraged.
Her ablity to bring the students attenetion towards the boards, how you ask is by having short clip and real music from the places we learned.
Ms. Yang has a positive energy and isn't overly critical of her students. She is patient and easy-going.
She is very knowledgable in the subject area. She also provides thorough information for the students.
She clear on speaking of her topic as a teacher and also strength on each topic she talk about
She informs students with assignments when the assignment is close to the deadline. She encourages every student to participate in class. I love her personality.
As a teacher, Mrs. Man Yang's strength is knowing the subject well. She is very active and she tries to get all the students involve in all activities.
Ms. Man Yang's major strengths as a teacher is she can motivates and engage her students and she's also a excellent communicator.
That she was organized.
Very friendly and interactive. She is always to get the students to participate. Well educated. Teaches well for a young instructor.
she explained well all contents to students.
Ms Yang is very energetic and quite passionate about her subject/students. Allows the students freedom to voice their opinion with a positive, non-condescending atmosphere. Presented material clearly which made learning the subject matter interesting, factual and surprisingly fun. Had the course grading/policies clearly stated in the syllabus and was right on schedule. Found it attractive that Ms Yang is a student herself and closely relates being a student and reminds about deadlines, the breakdown of grades and to not loose focus. Wonderful teacher. Debating about switching to a Music Major. Mahalo
Just her attitude and the way she always tried her best to get us to participate, even though no one wanted to.
She is very humor person and her lecture is do organized, so it is easy to understand the contents
Has a great understanding for the subject matter Eager to teach
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
None!
None
Maybe by taking in the atmosphere of the class she can conclude that the class is not willing to participate, and strictly resort to a lecture.
Although we did follow the timeline, I really feel the class could be a little bit more organized. On the first day of instruction, we had our first homework assignment but she didn't really go over how to do it and didn't really announce that it was due before the next class. The only reason that I knew about it, was that I am the type of student that immediately writes down everything from each class's syllabus/time line in my planner. Had I not did that immediately, I would not have done the homework. I feel like she could have given a courteous" hey class, just reminding you to look at your time line and that your first assignment is due before next class." Also, there was not a lot of instruction on how to do the assignment itself. Although it was only notes and it was only worth 1 point -- it would be nice to have a guideline on how to do it. The only instruction we really got about it throughout the semester, was that we have to highlight interesting facts and questions about the text. There is not guideline as far as minimum pages or words to write, what kind of questions to write, what kind of interesting facts to write... etc. We didn't really follow the book anyway -- all the notes that we used on the exam were given to us in powerpoint. The book is very, very expensive. It's over $100. If we are expect to have this book in our possession, I'd really have appreciated it more utilized in the class itself. I honestly feel like I wasted a lot of money on a book I didn't need and as a student that struggles financially, it really affects me. If I had known in the beginning that most of the material will be given to us in class, I would not have wasted my money on buying it. I also really hated that our grade is basically based on a 100 point scale. That means that every point we get is 1% of our grade. I'm not sure if this is a common system, as it is possible that that classes that I have taken just so happened to all have a different type of grading system, but personally it was scale I really disliked. I am confident I will get a good grade, but it doesn't mean that I didn't have anxiety about it all semester, just because everything we did was obviously heavily weighed in our final grade. I appreciated the extra credit assignments, though.
I do not think she needs any changes.
Let us know when the due dates are. I didn't know until a while that we were supposed to submit our work before class starts.
N/A
I don't have any changes to suggest.
Go through topics slower.
Expansion on more musics
dont require a book if your only going to assign notes for it that never really apply to class. its a waste of 100 dollars. try to use more than just powerpoints to give lessons. find some other ways to teach about some sections and try to make it a bit more interactive.
having people with disablities to take their test fairly by not having weird exams that doesnt make sence,
If she would like to be a bit more commanding as a teacher, that could be good. I like the relaxed atmosphere but sometimes students were just being lazy and she could have pushed them to try a bit harder. But generally, I like the way she teaches.
There's no need for change. She's a great professor!
I think she did a really great job at her teachings.
One of my suggestion is having a group project, that way students have a way to get to know each other.
I don't have any suggest to her because she's a great teacher
For updating grades, she should put in the current grade so that the students can see what grade we are getting in her class.
Dont make the students interact with each other so much. More so with her.
Everything was good.
Bring more instruments to show to the class.
None
more time showing the powerpoints
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She talks to each of us privately
She understand and helps out , if there are areas that we don't understand.
Yes definitely, she always asked how the class was and encouraged student participation.
She gave us ample opportunity for extra credit, always informed us of when assignments were due way in advance and reminded us along the way, went over our grades and how to calculate them.
she'd always ask us if we had questions and answered any if we had them.
She told us when assignments were due.
Before or after class she would go to us or ask us to speak to her after class
Proffersor Yang showed concern formthe students by taking time after class to help people who are falling behind or to discuss an assingment.
She showed concern for students by continuously pushing us in the class enforcing class participation which made each and every one of us have to learn and stay in tune to the subject.
asked many times if there was any questions
She always emailed you if you emailed her first
you could tell by the way that she helped students that talked to her.
having outside learning
She listens very well to students' opinions and gives deadline reminders often.
She would always ask students if we had any questions. She would also take the time to explain things if students did not understand something that is being covered in the lesson.
Email students and write things on the whiteboard of important things
By encouraging students to come to class, participate, and do their homework so they can pass.
She shows concern by making sure that each students are right on track. She constantly remind her students about the homework that is due. She is also willing to go out there and provide important informations.
By being honest to her students and being consistent with her students. she's there when you need help.
She asked us a lot if we have any questions and that she said that she can help us.
Constantly keeping us aware of assingments due.
she beforehand noticed to students to do not missing any assignments
Ms Yang showed concern for students by reminding of the musical performances allowing us to attend at our convenience. Also offered a discounted price of admission to some great shows. Ms Yang always asked during lecture if the material is presented to fast or any questions.
By always helping us and showing that if we had questions to ask her!
study sessions in class
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes
Yes! I Surely will!
I would definitely recommend Miss Yang to students because I learned a lot from her class and I was encouraged to participate in class.
Yes, because she is knowledgeable in her material and cares for her students learning.
I would recommend her to those students who are actually willing to participate in class.
It would honestly depend on the student. I would not suggest her in general, but to specific types of students ( studious, mature, serious, music/culture appreciating students...) I would definitely suggest her as they would learn a lot in this course and would appreciate how knowledgeable she is. I also feel like in our particular class, as a class as a whole, we lacked a certain level of maturity. I feel like that kind of moved the general attitude of our entire class into a more negative direction. I don't think this was Ms. Yang's fault. The attitude of my peers affected me also, as I was distracted by how disrespectful some students were to different cultures. I am not sure if Ms. Yang has noticed this, but I don't think that this affected HER attitude, which I appreciated very much. Learning a new culture requires a bit of maturity, as we are learning about something that is completely foreign to us. I didn't like how the class would laugh at something that was not meant to be funny, just because it was foreign. Again, this is not something that is Ms. Yangs fault, but this is why I would not suggest her as their instructor to everyone, just because I strongly believe this course should not be taken by just anyone.
Yes i would recommend her to other student, she is fun and easy to learn from.
Yes, she makes the class fun
Yes because she is very enthusiastic and encourages student to be friends.
Yes I would because she was well organized in her teachings and made it a great learning environment.
yes its a fun class thats not too stressful
Yes I would, She is one of the greatest professors I ever had in college and at KCC.
i would recommend her to people who could understand her. sometimes she is a little hard to understand because of her accent and some people really have a hard time with anything but perfect English. other than that she is a fine teacher that still has a little bit more to learn about teaching.
i would give her a neutral, but she is still young so she has alot of expericence as well.
Yes. Because the class is pleasant and easy.
Yes. Her class is a great experience. It is very informative and it helps you to build up confidence with the presentation that everyone will have to do and as well as when she asks questions to random students about the lecture. She is a great professor and understands the needs of her students.
Yes, she is a great teacher :)
I would recommend Man Yang to students, especially when they want to lean about music. Her class is actually fun because you get to do inside and outside activities.
Yes, I would recommend Ms. Man yang to other students because she has a great relationship with all her student such as helping us and treated us fairly.
Yes, because she is a good teacher.
Yes. i learned much from the class.
yes....of course..she is a good teacher.
Yes.
Yes I would because shes sweet, fun, and makes everything easy to understand
Yes, because her class is so fun and well organized
Yes
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Awsome
Mahalo :)
She is always in time , read to help students and always come to class with a nice smile.
I really really enjoyed how the class was organized. The powerpoints were effective and to the point. There were no lectures that I thought were boring or meaningless. She really taught me a lot and I am thankful.
It is hard to make suggestion on how to teach this class because of the material that is covered, but I really find powerpoints in general are boring so if there was another way to get us to learn the material besides powerpoints, I think that would be good. I'm not saying that EVERY class was powerpoints, there was just a lot of them. I just wish there was less.
Shes nice and a great teacher.
She should teach teach. ore classes.
Great instructor whom I learned a lot from.
shes nice and shes young like us so its easy to learn from here
she is a great person and really cares about what shes teaching.
very smart.
We need more music professors, or professors in general, like her!
Mrs. Beryl is a great teacher. She really knows the subject that she is teaching. She also have a lot of personal experience based on the topic that she talks about. She have a great sense of humor.
All I can say to Ms. Man Yang is she's a great teacher I appreciate what she's done to us.
When explaining things she should explain them better.
Just Thank you...
Well cultured. Passionate about her subject.
Thanks so much for this semester it was great and I learned a lot! Great work and May God Bless You in every way possible! :)
She is so helpful. She returns email as soon as possible
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Yang focuses on each of us.
That you learn to appreciate each cultures music :)
The music cds are very valuable and helpful plus the extra music she emails us to learn more and appreciate the topic for that weekk.
How to analyze music is something I learned how to so specifically in the class. I now listen to music and am able to recognize various characteristics of a specific song . Also through exploring different types of music in other parts of the world I am more appreciative of other types of music .
She gave us a chance to express our musical individuality, which I really appreciate. I always felt included in the lectures, and felt that she was genuinely interested in what we thought of the music we were listening to. I'm sorry that the class was not more willing to participate.
She gives a lot of insight about what we cover in class. It is always a good thing when the instructor obviously cares about the subject he/she is teaching and that was very obvious in Ms. Yang. I probably won't remember everything we covered for the rest of my life, but I will most likely always remember certain things about diffferent cultures and their music for the rest of my life.
The music analysis is very helpful.
Learning how to describe music, it makes remembering term for a certain music easier.
The ability to analyze music and appriciate different music of other cultures.
What I found the most valuable and helpful about the course was keeping an open mind about different cultures and try something new.
learning music from my own culture.
Just the fun environment
learning how to analyze music is probably one of the most helpful things that she had taught us, its something that ill use through out my entire career.
learning that not every teacher will actually give you their full attention and "college" is "college". Reality will set in real fast.
The presentation that everyone has to do provides an opportunity to build up self confidence. Also the questions that the professor asks also provides the same opportunity.
I found reading the book and writing notes helps me on this course
Learning about other cultures and understanding their kind of music.
The most valuable and helpful about the course is having knowledge on the history of music and the type of music in different countries.
I find this course very interesting and I learned different kind of music in the world.
I found out about the music is the different cultures, like the instruments and I know what different textures, organolgy, pitch, rhythm and form there is.
Worldy Knowledge.
I knew a lot of information through this course.
The culture presented in each presentation by Ms Yang and each student about their Music presentation.
Just learning how to appreciate music in a deeper way and learning all types of different wats people use music in
Exams are not that hard
the power points

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She has good communication skills, personable but professional. She makes sure the students understand her and provides a comfortable work environment where lectures are very open for better perspective. The entire curriculum is well organized and goal oriented.
She is very open and willing to dedicate extra time to all of her students. She is the only teacher I have had this semester who I could tell really wanted her students to do well and succeed.
She tries to have a sense of humor, and tries to teach the piano class in a authoritive and in a curriculum set class atmosphere.
Her major strengths are having patience, constant encouragement, being a positive influence, answering questions with insight, having knowledge that is pertinent, very punctual, and always willing to help her students.
She makes sure that everyone is on the same page, doesn't teach new material too soon or too late.
she always teach me piano easily. And if I cant do it or understand it, she try to understand me well.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
The only problem I ever had during class is when we would get time to practice and she would call each student up idividually to play on the big piano. The big piano is very loud and it's hard to hear yourself play even with the headphones on. I would have appreciated it if that were something we did when we first got to class. Gotten our critiques then had practice after or even lobby for a bigger classroom. I know we all need practice on the big piano so it's difficult to think of a real solution but that classroom is so tiny it's easy to get drowned out. Outside of class, I had a problem trying to get my portfolio together (I have never done a portfoolio before). Maybe just a more specific outline or examples of past portfolios.
I wish she could give me more personal instruction and have a longer class.
I recommend giving more homework like memorizations of half page pieces or maybe even short 5 question quizzes at the beginning of class. Yes it is more work but I think it would greatly increase learning capacity and confidence.
n/a.
Her class is so best
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Very attentive
She would reach out to us and offer us as many opportunities as possible. A lot of teachers have to be hunted down for help, where as she would take immediate action and be ready with a helping hand.
She tried to find out, why certain students would be absent on days.
She was able to make time outside of class to meet up and she would also dedicate time during class to help others that requested or that she felt it was necessary. She was also lenient when it came to deadlines and was able to accommodate for unusual circumstances.
She made sure we all had individual time with her to practice and helped us on our pieces.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes Good teacher, fun class, feels like time well spent.
I would definitely and already have recommended her as a teacher. She is a great teacher. She is also a professional that loves what she does, what she is teaching, and she wants to see other people fall in love with it to. A LOT of hard work goes into her course but nothing about her class waas hard as long as you put forth the effort to practice.
I would recommend her to other students if they have some prior piano knowledge, the class can get advanced and you need a lot of practice outside of class.
Yes because I believe anyone would love to learn piano under her guidance. She's very supportive and she's willing to offer more time than the class is scheduled for.
Yes. She can teach thoroughly and makes sure that the whole class can play.
Yes, she is so kind. She can teach piano kindly so you dont need to worry about piano's ability
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Sheʻs great! Young but well educated, open-minded and clearly passionate about music and teaching. I plan to take her music in world cultures class.
Her teaching style is easy to follow, her methods are effective, and her personality is spot on to deal with any kind of student. I respect her for being so patient and wiling to help us.
I believe Man Yang loves the piano. I wish she would share more of that knowledge with me in the classroom with more instruction on the songs, repretoirs.
She's just super cool and I than her for inspiring and encouraging me.
I'd take more classes from her!
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Piano helps me with music theory, and I like to play. She covered both and made it clear with any questions answered.
The avalability of the pianos. There were pianos outside, in private rooms, and even in her office. A lot of our coursework deended on us practicing on our own.
Learning to read musical notes and songs.
Everything. Also that piano is in my opinion a huge adrenaline rush to play in front of everyone. My first recital left me with an unbelievable feeling of accomplishment.
Everything.
I could understand a little music theory as piano class. Piano is so good instrument. And then I was happy to play piano.
19. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
observant passionate kind
The perfect teacher.
young, passionate about piano, and conservative.
Empathetic, Enlightening, and Professional.
Sweet, caring, patient.
Good

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She is able to relate well with her students and always makes sure that everyone understands new ideas, words and concepts before moving on.
She is enthusiastic, passionate about the subject, and makes the information interesting.
Professor Yang is very patient with students and is passionate about the subject.
Her major strengths are that she knows this field of music, she encourages everyone to participate, and her teaching skills are excellent.
Her enthusiasm for the subject and her sense of humor make the class interesting to learn and be in.
She knows her material and she cares about her students.
I enjoyed her lectures. I was able to keep up and follow all the power points without difficulty. Since this was an ethnomusicology class, she played music and us as the students would talk about the song and what we knew about it. Shed bring exotic instruments and guests to teach us these songs and it's culture.
She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the subject. She is very fair in grading and tries her best to relate the subject matter to the students on a level easy to grasp.
As a teacher, you are well prepared, organized, fun, energetic, and really know your subject.
She's a very nice and fair teacher. Knows a lot about this particular subject being taught. Very knowledgeable and trustworthy teacher.
My music 107 teacher Man Yang is sweetheart. She concerns about students in every single class. First time when I attend the class, I surprised how she is a young teacher, then I was a little bit worried how it will be. However, I really impressed how she put effort into her lecture for class and I think every MUSIC 107 students felt her efforts during her lecture. For example, she has never stopped smiling during class, She always responds message, I can always check my grade the day I submitted assignment or took test. She also listen student carefully. If someone ask question about our study, in the next lecture, she prepare detail answer for everyone. I feel much more close to her than other professors. I used to believe that teacher/professor who are just teaching their study field because of their job, or some teachers are even no passion for their job like their obligation. I felt different to Mis Yang who is always trying to be improve herself such as communication with students and quality of her lecture. She also focus on how to enjoy music. In our class, we danced Hula with special Hula guest dancer. The other day, we sung and danced Indonesian traditional song with special guest from Indonesia who performed in 24th KCC International festival. I had been not interested in the event (KCC International festival), but since I attended the lecture, I changed my mind and visit the event for few times. It was very interesting experience for me, and now I am thank for Mis Yang because she gave me my motivation. She may young teacher and need more experience for some field, but I really proud of her who takes her job serious and has passion for it. I am glad to take her class this semester and if I have chance I would like to take her class again.
The ability to make students laugh, have a good time learning. I really respect that she stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to teach in the US. Even though english is not her first language, she spoke very well and clear. Easy to understand.Recommended to anyone who enjoys the music of the world.
She is very friendly for all students, therefore the class was very lively.
She knew her subject, and you could tell that she loved teaching about it. She is a great teacher!
She's really understanding and takes genuine interest in her students' learning and in what they have to bring to the table as well. She's much better than the previous Mus 107 professor at KCC in my opinion. Beryl is really nice and helpful.
Her strengths as a teacher are she is very involved with class participation, good listener, and well open-minded teacher.
She is kind and patient, and her lectures and presentations in class are interesting. The videos and course materials were entertaining and made me interested in the subject. Very prompt in returning assingments and tests and readily available to students (answers emails very quickly).
She is very patient, and explains the content of her lectures thoroughly. Mrs. Yang is always prepared for her lectures and she keeps the content well organized. She is passionate about what she teaches.
She knows how to grade each assignment and tests very fairly for each students. She knows what she doing and talking about and she tries her best to remind us what's coming up.
Subject.
She knows her material very well and is always very understanding and cheerful.
Very fluent in the subject!!! Very easy going easy to talk to, and very patient.
She knows the area of study that she is teaching and all her points are very clear. I like how she teaches.
Her ability to engage her students and the way she is able to elaborate on the topic with her vast amount of knowledge. She is very friendly and able to relate to many of her students. The class is very organized and she is always able to give our test backs the next class. She provides students with every opportunity to become successful in her class.
She always have possible feedback whenever we give her answer even though it was right or wrong.
Several qualities that demonstrate her excellence of being a teacher are, enthusiastic character, informative content, and her passion in ethnomusicology.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No changes because she already has the material down and her teaching techniques are the best.
Perhaps try and invite more people into the class to show their style of music, it was really fascinating and it would have been great to have one person for each unit we covered in class.
Place more emphasis (points) on class participation in order to get more response from students. While not the best method it is still effective.
There is no need for any changes.
I think that posting notes online for us to review would be very helpful. It would help us focus on the lecture more instead of diverting our attention towards copying notes.
None
None.
I really dislike the book. It's boring, long, and not appealing. Through out your class I have been using your powerpoint and my notes taking in your class. The power point and have helped me a lot to study for your test, and not really reading or referring to the book. As for my preference I prefer multiple choice for test.
Nothing much.
Just bring in more artists so they can demonstrate their music in a more hands-on type of way. Listening to different music was interesting but bringing in artists would just take it to the next level. Also making instruments would be fun as well.
Nothing
none, she was great!
Perhaps offer the powerpoint slides on laulima. I understand the emphasis on writing notes for ourselves and how that supposedly helps with memory retainment. However, sometimes it's hard to write everything down.
It would be great if she incorporated more guess speakers in the class.
I loved her attitude and teaching style. Though as a suggestion, perhaps she can post her PowerPoints online so that for those who missed a class can take down notes that they've missed that day. But other than that, no changes at all.
Dont stop being awesome.
Nothing.
I really like her style and wouldn't change anything.
No changes necessary.
No changes I believe that everything is well organized and should be kept the way it is.
None
No changes except improving her awesomeness.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She makes sure to make each lesson enjoyable while still teaching us all that we need to know for the tests. Also as I have said she makes sure we understand everything before going on.
She reminded us of deadlines, made sure the class understood the information, and encouraged questions.
She answered all student questions and never talked down to them.
She encourages students to participate in class discussions. She groups the students to discuss and asks us individually a question, so students would just answer a question she would ask us. She also gives feedback on work that we do (ex. powerpoints, etc.)
She answers questions when we have them. She's also personable and considerate towards her students.
She was available to help students whenever necessary, and also gave good feedback on how we were doing in class and on exams.
She would call on students for their opinion and was interested in what everyone would say.
She is always doing her best to get every single student engaged in class discussion. She always makes sure that every student understands the material thoroughly and completely.
Thank you so much for being available in your office and through e-mail. And always helping us stay on track and care for your students to strive for the hightest.
We could email or ask her any questions we had, and also asked during class sometimes if everyone understood what was being taught.
She brought a lot of music festival or concert informations.
She always asks if we understand the material and we have dicussions frequently.
She remembered all name of the classmates.
Yes. Whenever I emailed her, she was sure to help me out
She emails students and writes notes on the things that they submit.
She hears students opinion then gives feedback.
She gave all her students a syllabus and sent out email reminders as well as reminders in class on upcoming events or assignments. She would also ask students if they had questions at the end of her lectures.
When she saw that we did not understand what was being taught, she taught it from a different angle. She took time to explain her lectures to individuals. When students had something to share, she listened intently with good eye contact.
She taught us how we should write our paper properly in our own words, she created a jeopardy game for our midterm and final test to make us remember what we have learned.
She learned every students name after the first week of school. AMAZING, not a lot of teachers put that much effort into doing that!
She let me opt out of watching an Indian Movie because I didn't feel comfortable watching belly dancing.
She was always available even if she was a student herself. She was able to learn from us and took into accountability everyone's own opinion about anything we were discussing.
She always was able to email the students on up coming events they could use for their event report essays and would remind people if there were scheduled to present next class.
She are fairly when concern for students. Everyone could get help from her and she is friendly to help them.
If necessary, she provided students with advising of any questions or concerns in her office.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Definitely yes because she is amazing.
Yes, I would. She makes class interesting and fun. Class isn't too hard because she explains exactly what you need to do and it's not overwhelming- it's the perfect level of challenge and ease mixed into one. It's not an easy class, you have to know what you're doing and you have to know the material- but that's why it's great, because she makes learning fun in a sense.
Yes. Her knowledge of and passion for ethnomusicology show in her teaching. She is capable, clear, and comfortable to be around.

Yes, because I learned a lot from her and I know that they would enjoy having her as a teacher too!
Yes, definitely. If anybody wants to take Mus 107, they should take it from her and not from anybody else. Other professors are either not as easy to approach or are harder to understand.
Yes, she is a very great teacher, easy to understand and she knows her field of study.
Yes, I would most definitely recommend her to students because she makes the subject interesting, intergrating many aspects such as history of a culture in addition to their music. An understanding teacher, she gives a thorough and fun review before each midterm.
Yes, I already have. A teacher that genuinly cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches.
Yes because she is funny and very nice. She is a very fair grader.
Yes! She's so cute and she makes the subjects interesting by bringing in actual examples such as instruments and speakers to help better understand the topic!

Yes I would very much so recommend her to other students because not only is she a great teacher but one of the few who really care and is able to teach a subject without getting bored.
Yes, I will since she is very good teacher, I mean she is easy going
Most definitely, her persona is very fitting to encourage students in attending class without getting too bored or uninterested.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Other teachers don't even begin to compare with her because she is just that good.
She is a fantastic teacher and I love the enthusiasm she brings to the classroom.
Even though she's the teacher and we're the students, she shows us respect too.
She's great at what she does.
I respect her, for teaching in and being well adversed in the english language.
I really enjoy your class and thank you for expanding my horizon to different music and cultures.
Nice, funny teacher.
Thank you for being a great teacher!
Thank you, I had a good time.
I loved her class and know that it was a good discision to take it
She's one of the best professors I've ever had.
I hope she continues to teach and remain passionate about the subject she teaches. Thanks to her, I am now listening to music generes I've never heard of before.
I like her sense of humor.
Nothing.
GIVE MORE EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES PLEASE!!
She is beautiful inside and out and has a heart for Music and her students.
Thank you very much for overriding administration to allow me the privilege to have taken your class. Thank you, thank you!!!
That I am glad that I took this class because I was able to get so much out of it. This class was a lot of fun and she should continue to teach this subject.
And she is pretty as well.
She is a wonderful professor to take if interested in exploring the numerous aesthetics in music, worldwide.
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I got out of it exactly what I was expecting of the course and more.
I actually learned a lot about other cultures music, much more than I thought I would learn in this class. And I love that I can actually apply this stuff in every day life. The material has already come in handy in unrelated school situations.
The variety of listening samples and guest musicians.
I like the study guide she gives us for each exam, and when we have a class study session.
I enjoy and appreciate the exposure to music from many different ones, especially since all of the music traditions we covered are non-Western. It helped me gain a better perspective on music.
I got to learn about other cultures and how music is valuable everywhere you go.
I learned how music really expresses the culture it comes from. I've now developed that ear to distinguish which music comes from which culture, the instruments used, and the proper names for each group of instruments.
Man Yang is not afraid to admit she does not know an answer. She is humble and respective of the student's.
Learned a lot about different culture, respect to one another, learning to love different taste of music.
Knowing more about the music and instruments in different cultures was interesting and it might be helpful fo rme since im planning to be a music major.
Yes, I recommend to take her class. You will change your image of professor.
Learning to appreciate the different types of music genres, even if some arent pleasing to listen to at all.
I learned culture, geography, and history through music.
I learned things I never knew about music around the world
The emphasis on having an open mind.
The concept of no music being better than the other and the exposure to such a wide variety of music and cultures.
This class expaned my horizon of world music. I was exposed to differnt ethnic music that I found was enjoyable. It helped me find an appreciation for ethnic music and its unique qualities.
The history of some continents and country.
Music is not just enjoyable beats and melodies. There is more to music and lyrics than just good metaphors and enjoyable tempos.
I found most valuable that when I applied myself to studying I succeeded in learning things I thought I would never be able to understand.
It made me more aware of the similarities that world music share throughout multiple cultures.
The slides and presentations.
I found the the study guides very helpful for the test as well as the study session we had in class. They both really prepared you well for the test and so there wont be surprises on the test like how some other teachers do.
I have gain lots of information from the world music. Each religion has their old unique musical traditional which greatly represented their nation.
It helped me to understand the implications of how world music played in a role in religion and society, in the past and presently. It also got me to comprehend how each culture's ideas of what music is, what its powers are, how it relates to other aspects of life, and how it reflects important things about its people and their view of the world. Overall, this course has impacted my view in music positively.

Simply the best. Better than all the rest. Better than any other teacher that I have ever met.
It's a fantastic course- the teacher really brings it to life.
In general I'm opposed to the college textbook scam. The arguments the publishers use to justify the high costs of textbooks do not hold against critical scrutiny. I would rather professors assign more affordable material (internet articles and books, standard books, their own books, etc.) As this is unlikely to change, I nonetheless appreciate that professor Yang required the condensed (and thus cheaper) version of the required textbook.
thank you!!!

Thank you for making Music 107 a very enjoyable class for me. I learned a lot from this class.

I wish I could take another class from her, but I may be moving next semester. I pray that she succeeds in everything that she does and wish her the very best. Whoever her next students are will be very lucky indeed :)
Great class, would also want future teachers to teach like her.
You did a very good job, keep it up and have a great summer

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She is very knowledgeable of her field. Because she knows so much, she has a lot to share with students. She tries to explain things in terms that we would understand, and she gives lots of audio and video samples which are very helpful for understanding many of the concepts in a world music course. She encourages us to think for ourselves, but she still knows the areas in which we need more guidance. She gets us thinking outside of the box, outside of our comfort zone. Although she initially assists us in trying to understand what is going on with the many complicated areas of music, she slowly but surely releases the "training wheels" to the point where we are able to do understand it on our own.
she knew the the content well
she understands and knows her subject extremely well. she would encourage and make students interact in class.
Very enthusiastic, kind, approachable, and knowledgable about world music and fun in class. Comes up with interesting activities to help the students better learn different types of music. Uses her resources and friends in her major to bring us into the field of ethnomusicology, for example she brought in friends that either studied or knew a specific kind of music to present and elaborate to the class that we had to study.
She provides helpful study guides and is clear about what's going to be on the exams.
I could see she wants to teach us. Good teacher.
Man Yang has a strength and love for teaching music. She was very helpful with any questions I had.
She made everything easy for us to understand and made clear that she knew what she was talking about through experience.
She is funny and knows alot of interesting things about world music.
Her honesty and passion to teach.
She makes her best for students to participate and make her lectures more dynamic. She always asks for students feedback in order to make sure that students are understanding the lecture, and she is always attentive to any doubts students may have. She always arrives to class with a lot of energy and a positive attitude, which makes the class much more fun and dynamic.
she knows a lot of music culture and very kind
Getting the whole class involved in whatever we do.
The class was always reluctent to disscuss but she was patient with them while still trying diffrent techniques to get every one involved.
She encourages everyone to participate. She is very well prepared every class and also organized.
Ms Yang was very organized and it was really easy to follow her lectures. She is personable yet professional. Great instructor!
she has made this class a fun learning experience.
Man Yang's strengths as a teacher are describing different types of music and giving the students great information on all types of music that she teaches.
Professor Yang's greatest strength as a teacher is that she does just that. She teaches us. She is very compassionate about her students and is very obvious that she cares about us just by how she teaches.
always showing concern for the student and understanding their needs in order to learn. She is very helpful and flexible.
Very knowledgeable with the areas that we covered, really good motivator too
She is very well prepared and thorough in the subject she teaches. She's very encouraging of students to form opinions of the music that's listened to in class. You can tell she wants her students to do the best they can and she gives lots of opportunities to do so.
She knows a lot about music.
She was very organized and clear throughout every section. She had her resources up on time. The work was simple for everyone to understand.
Man Yang's major strength as a teacher is knowing the subject well enough so that she could help us relate it to things we knew or how to remember them well enough for tests
she knows what she's talking about.
Professor Man Yangs strengths as a teacher was that she never really talked down to us as a class which therefor made me that much more comfortable in class to ask questions and such and also made me respect her that much more. She always showed concern for our learning after all her powerpoint notes slides, in case we had questions or thoughts on the subject. She is one of my favorite teachers and I would love to take a class instructed by her again.
she is well prepared. she motivates her students to participate. she knows what she is teaching and makes it fun for the class to learn.
Ability to present and teach content clearly
She knows the subject she's talking about, and you can tell she loves it. It shows through. Also, as the subject matter does require discussion and different views, she encourages us to talk amongst ourselves and discuss different traits and styles of music. On top of it all, she listens to her students comments and suggestions and takes them into account.
She's really friendly and always willing to help. Really easy to talk to and easy to understand what we are talking about in class.
I think Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was how passionate she was about this subject. She was very friendly was welcoming and that created a good learning environment. I wasn't afraid to ask questions because I knew she would be helpful and try her best with giving me an answer.
She knows her subject very well and always tries to get participation from the class.
teach the music
Knew the subject very well
She knew her subject well and taught her lessons the same each day, which was good organization. She always got the class to participate and asked for suggestions on how to make our learning experience better. She stuck by the syllabus and if she changed it, she gave ample time for rescheduling. She was always available to us after class.
She provides the material work by Power Point. Her way of teaching World music is having the class listen to music samples and watch video performances.
She knows what she is teaching very well. She knows how to handle the class in a very good manner. I love her. Sheʻs a great teacher! :)
very good teacher.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Be more confident! It is obvious that you are very knowledgeable of your field, and you are always very prepared each time you come to class. Take pride in knowing that you are constantly on top of your game!
try to make the presentations differ
the tests would be shorter, it felt like there was a lot of information that needed to be remembered.
None
I feel she should drop a lesson or two and focus on the major music themes.
add more cultures in the course, other than asia and america
Nothing.
None!!!
should decrese little writting assignment. If person do not have idea for writing assignment such as reading paper, probably it is little difficult. hope should do more explain about writting assignment.
no idea.
I suggest that she should give more hand outs.
I think disscussing it as a class worked better than breaking off into smaller groups as the course went on. Once people were familar with the terminoligy and comforatable using it not as much of a need for the smaller group discussions. They seemed to digress slightly. Also the class where we got up and had to find students that could do one of the 4 things helped bring class together and would suggest doing that sooner in the course.
None
none
During the course she has been changing for the better becuase of our presentations we had to do in class. She learned from us which makes her powerpoints and presentations/instructions easy to understand. The powerpoints show visual pictures, not too many words, and videos which keeps the students entertained.
There are no changes i would want to make with this Professor. She is perfection at it's fullest.
none. the exams tho are too long.
More hands-on activities like the hula, bringing in guest speakers were good too
If she could speak up a little louder, and maybe not ask the class as many open-ended questions. "What do you think?" is sometimes very daunting to answer. Sometimes it's alright but most of us are shy.
No changes are needed.
i think everything is perfectly fine the way it is, including the exams. There shouldn't be any multiple choice. It's better to let the students thing for themselves.
No changes
i think she should allow more extra credit and change the test's to multiple choose.
None
While the lecture-and-test method is straightforward and can get the job done, I'd like to see if she could create some other way of teaching the class. I really liked how she went out of the box in her teaching when she brought over guest speakers, played more music and video to illustrate what she teaches, etc. I wish she would've done more of that.
I can't really think of anything I would want to change about the class.
I think the only thing I would change about this class would be maybe doing more activities. I thought it would of been good to do more group activities and interact more with other students because by the end of the semester I didn't know half of the people in my class.
Some of the students suggested multiple choice for the exams but i thought the way she had it was perfect. If people studied, the exam was easy to follow.

I don't have any changes for Mrs. Yang
No changes needed.
N/A :)
nothing really, everything she did was good.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She always asks if we have questions, and she takes the time to answer them in class if everyone seems to be having difficulty with the same thing. If students need more help with one area than another, she will modify her plans in order to allot more time for the area of difficulty. If we need to hear a music sample again in order to better understand a certain concept or to hear a certain sound that we might have initially missed, she gladly replays it because she knows that our learning is important to us. She is also more than willing to answer questions outside of class time. Although attendance counts for our grades, she understands that students may have days in which they are ill or in which they have emergencies (e.g. I had a family emergency this semester), and so she gives us 3 days in which we may be absent for these reasons if they should ever occur. As students (and quite frankly, as human beings), it makes us more comfortable knowing that we have the freedom to take a day or so to recover from the natural, and often times inevitable, stresses and obstacles of life. She understands that, although we are students working toward achieving a goal, we are not machines; she acknowledges that we are beings susceptible to things beyond our control. As adults trying to make it in this world, it is nice to know that teachers still remember what it is like to be a struggling student.
asked them questions
she understood that we have lives outside of school and was willing to work with you on things after class.
She listened to students feedback about the first midterm, and agreed to put up class presentations and notes on laulima, which made it very easier and helpful to study for the other exams
She addressed to the class about turning in the Chapter Notes on time, since there are students who haven't been doing that assignment. Plus this course requires to have 5 completed Chapter Notes turned in.
She kept students aware of their grades and where they stand in the class in relation to the other students.
Always made sure we were participating. Encouraged comments and questions.
She would frequently ask if there were any questions, she knew all the students names, knew the subject well, and made students feel comfortable in her class. and most of all she gave us opportunities to watch free events.
Giving students ample time and chances for feedback.
She encourages students to analyze subjects by themselves, and she asks questions in order to encourage students to reveal any doubts they might have.
she concern to every studenrs and she want to know every students name.
She was always encouraging students to ask the presenting student about their power point.
If a student didn't understand a certain part of what we were currently learning, she would go over it again and help them understand.
She helped us out alot by reviewing for the exams.
she asked if anyone needed help, or if questions were not clear to students.
I guess my only response to this is making time out of her schedule to help students get the assignments finished when they needed to.
She is very kind. Most teachers i come across are not nearly as kind as she is. She made sure that we understood the lesson plan and kept us up to date about the assignments and everything.
just talk to her to let her know whats going on and she will help you ina way where you can manage
Always would let us know if we're missing anything and was lenient on due dates
When I was supposed to give a presentation, my computer unexpected stopped working and I couldn't take it in do a slideshow. Ms. Yang emailed me back asking if I had a thumbnail and that she'd be willing to accommodate me on her computer. Sadly, I did not check my email in time. But she told me I could do extra credit so that was good.
Man Yang showed concern for students (us) by having surveys to find out what/how she could improve the class and she showed us our grades to let us know how we were doing in the class.
always encourages us to participate.
She always asked if we had questions, and encouraged us to share our thoughts on every lesson plan in class.
she made sure she got to know each student and she always goes around asking how are we each class day.
She is flexible with deadlines and i feel like she wants everyone to succeed
She always sticks behind after the class finishes and encourages students to come up and ask any questions they may have on the lecture that day. I've taken advantage of that opportunity on several occasions, and I've always received good help whenever I did.
She's always willing to help and encourages to ask for help when we need it as well as to speak up in class. She really wants us to do well and pass the class.
Man Yang showed concern for students because she was always trying to help us understand what we were learning. When we were confused she always had an answer. She also gave us good review sheets before our exams which was very helpful in remembering the information.
She announced constant reminders of assignments that were due the next class and made sure everyone was keeping up.
USE THE VEDIO
Helped me through the semester when I had hard times.
fairly.
If anyone had conflict with completing a homework assignment, missed a class, and/or needed help with a certain part of the slideshow she is more than willing to help us out.
She reminds student to do the reading, make reading notes, write event reports and other work.
She always wants students to participate in in-class activities. She also offered extra credit opportunities.
by giving us extra credit and time to do homework.

YES I WOULD! She is a really nice teacher who knows a lot about ethnomusicology.
yes, because she is a very good teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is doing a fantastic job! She seemed a bit shy at first, but that is probably very common for graduate students teaching a college course. As time went by, she seemed more comfortable teaching.
She was very nice.
great instructor, fun class to be in, would always have something new to show us to correlate or to bring the music of the chapter to life.
Nothing else to say.
She is an awesome teacher and individual!
She is very positive and funny.
Does a good job!
I wish there were more instructors like her.
I have noted that she is always asking for students feedback. She always wants to make sure that students are learning. She is always eager to listen to students opinions in order to improve the effectiveness of her course.
no idea
Overall an excellent instructor.
I realy enjoyed this course and learned quite a bit about music and cultures i havnt had a chance to learn much about. The Chinese section was especially interesting. Native american was also informative and i wish there had been more on it. More players the better as well that was by far the best part. African drumming was my favorit part of this class.

thank you for everything. keep up the good work.
She is a good teacher and is easy to pass if you do all the homework that is required.
She is a great professor and I am happy that I had the privilege to attend her class.
THANKS FOR A GREAT SEMESTER!! i wish i could take you again
If she taught another class, I'd probably take it too
She's very young and pretty. I'm not used to young teachers, it's an interesting change of pace calling my teacher only by her first name.
I enjoyed her class and she was a great instructor/teacher!
Keep it up Ms. Man!
One of my favorite teachers and an all around great person.
shes smart and knows a lot about music and the culture
She's really quick with giving us back graded assignments and tests. Really open to ideas of what to do or change about the class. I really, really, really like her and her class!
I think she is a very good teacher and she seems like she has a lot of background information on this subject. She knew so much about each music culture.
Overall great teacher. I wish she taught more classes.
N/A
She's a great teacher.
Her class is really amazing, I get to learn different genres and different kinds of instruments.
She is very caring, chill, and fun.
nothing, really, she is very good.
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
She has expanded our thinking about music and its function in different cultures. She has made us more aware of the fact that everything is relative; different cultures view things differently. No one way of thinking is better than another, and music is seen very differently throughout the world. Our western culture has made us so close minded when it comes to music, and I am very glad that she had broadened my thinking and opened my mind to other perspectives. I feel more worldly simply because I took this course with Man Yang! Not only has she opened my mind to different views of music around the world, but she has also changed my way of thinking in general. I am no longer as narrow minded as I was at the beginning of the semester, and things that are foreign are no longer viewed as strange... they are simply different. I have learned to accept that the standards by which I was raised are not the "norm" for everyone, and that basically everything is relative. Culture plays a huge role in how we view the world and how we interact with others, and it was nice to learn about other cultures and what the world might look like through their eyes. I especially appreciated that I was able to learn all of this through music!
the resources available
all of the listening samples of music were extremely helpful.
The power presentations were crucial lifesavers to use to study for the exams.
I found that the structure of her study guides are most valuable and helpful about the course because if you do it correctly and review it, you'll do good on the exam.
Learning about Hawaiian music.
I likes that her lectures were very visual, lots of power points and videos. also hands on learning!
She made it her rask to make sure we understood the subject very very well.
Class participation.
Learning about World Music is a wonderful way of learning about worlds cultures. Im very happy I took this class because there are many things I have learned about other cultures and about my own, that I would have not learned otherwise. It is amazing how much information instruments and music conveys.
about the Hawaiian music, because i never had listen to hawaiian music, that's why.
That the every power point we went through in class was put up on Laulima.
having the demonstrations in class from diffrent experts was very engaging and informative.
Notes are on laulima and we are also given study guides. We also have reviews for our exams the week before.
reviews were most helpful. and the teacher would go over subject very well.
By completing this course, I am one step closing to entering the Nursing Program. Also, it allows me to categorize or explain different types of music that I hear on the radio.
I learned. And I enjoyed learning.
the music samples that she played
Going to class helped a lot, good lectures
I like learning about the musical terms, and different instruments and music from other cultures. I suppose what was most helpful was seeing slides of the instruments, and knowing what to listen for..
The lecture, power points and class discussions were very useful.
I really liked the visuals in class; the power points were REALLY great because they were simple and easy to understand. Also, I liked the music samples provided before the class even starts and the samples played for every section. It's fun to listen to them. I sometimes write the songs down so I can listen to them later. (:
Learning about different types of cultural music and making new friends.
The study guides for the exam was so helpful! If it wasn't for the study guide, I wouldn't know where to begin studying. Thank you for that!
She always posted her notes up on Laulima incase we missed a section or part of her notes. That was very helpful.
i learned to appreciate the different cultures and their music
New ability to understand the structure of music
Being able to define and differentiate between different genres and styles of music. Also, being exposed to all sorts of different sounds and what people could call "noise" and see the aesthetics behind it all.
Learning about music in other cultures. I got a new perspective of music and got to understand it a bit more. It helped me appreciate music a lot more than I already had.
I thought learning about different styles of music around the world was very helpful. I think it is valuable to know not only about your culture, but the cultures around you. This course provided me with information about music that I would of never known about before. From learning their music, I was able to understand a culture better in terms of religion, community, entertainment, values, etc.
I really learned a lot about different types of music form different cultures around the world.
YES,i learn a lot of the world music .
I took band in high school and I took this class thinking it was just a straight music class. I was a little dissapointed knowing it was a music "history" class, but Beryl taught us about the different cultures and the sound of the music in them.
I would say that her presentation with the subjects we covered throughout the semester makes it very interesting and easy to follow.
Learning about music from other world cultures.
