14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
pay more attention to student emails, because some students need help.
I think because this class didnot have any quizes or tests, she had us write film analysis and 2 event reports. I think it was a little too much, because I had other classes to write for and it made me a lot more stressed out~
None
Make directions/instructions clearer and possibly create a rubric for the assignments, especially the final paper because it was unclear what was wanted.
Too much to write even though it is not the WI class. Although this is the online class, I think it was better we learn something from her using powerpoint or something, for example.
Idk, anything I can complain about I think she does in the actual class, maybe don't be pregnant anymore? (joke)
nothing
I prefer that grades were returned earlier because I didn't have enough time to revise them.
No changes.

Her class is so funny and teaching is very clear to understand. Thank you.
She explain everything very well.
I think when she provides some presentation for us, she prepared those presetation perfectly.
Professor Yang's major strengths as a teacher are keeping the students engaged with her presentations also showing examples of different instruments from different parts of the world. Shows concern for her students and gives out a lot of opportunities to earn extra credit.
A lot of in class examples of music which was great
knows her items and discussions very very well.
She knows what she is talking, the class is fun and I learn a lot from her

Her knowledge in the field
She knew what she was teaching and she was able to help me when I didn't understand something and was there to see me.
Very enthusiastic and interactive. She encouraged us to participate and not just listen to lecture.
Ms. Yang is very enthusiastic and energetic, so the class and it's materials were fun and interesting.
She cares about her students. She has a broad knowledge about the different cultures music and present the musics to us uniformly, i.e.,she didn't show any prejudice or favoritism, she didn't say one type of music is better than the other. She presented the information in a very neutral way.
Her strengths as a teacher are lectures and showing concern for a student.
Miss Yang's major strength as a teacher was her enthusiasm in teaching. She always taught with excitement.
She's an instructor that is fairly easy to understand, she explains her teachings thoroughly and helps those to better understand certain musical topics and encourages her students to participate a lot.
She knows her stuff and she engages with her students.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
The only change I could think of is to maybe teach about more popular music that everyone can kind if relate to.
she can speak more loudly.
Some changes I suggest that Professor Yang make is to go over the study guide before tests.
Nothing
I think just add some other lesson like music from other countries that people never heard of
-Show up to more classes on time
nothing
I don't think I would change anything from this course.
None...
For the structure of exams, maybe it would be better to have the listening examples first, that way the students can take their time on the multiple choice scantron portion. Also, for the ethnic music presentation, I think that ten minutes is a little too long.
We didn't cover some of the chapters in the book, such as the music of Europe, Caribbean, Native American, and North America, but instead we spent plenty of time on Hawaiian music. Maybe it's because we're in Hawaii. But Western music is a big influence to a lot of different cultures, so I would recommend covering that, especially since this is a cultural music class and a lot of people from Hawaii have not travel much and may not be familiar with Western (European) style music.
Get the students involve more, have more interaction things.
N/A

She talked to whoever she felt needed the help and was always open to seeing them before or after class to make sure they ware all caught up.
She always made herself available for questions either in class, after class or by email. She was also very approachable and understanding.
Ms. Yang was caring yet firm.
She advises students to seek help and to plan accordingly. She encourages those who need help to make an appointment with her. She reminds us of the various deadlines, not just for the class, but for the UH system as a whole.
She would talk to the student after class.

Thank you for a great semester! :)
Thank you for an awesome class and thanks for all your encouragment
The presentation topic is very wide and open. It is overwhelming in where to start and focus on what to talk about. Maybe offer an outline for the presentation, and students can chose to follow it or now. Some students are knows what they want to do but some may need that extra guidance.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She knows the material very well and likes to engage discussions.
The culture of difference countries
very good information. she is very enthusiastic and has a good clear way of communicating course material through lectures.
well organize
She was very passionate of her profession/field of study.
She is clearly deeply involved in the subject of world music, and encouraged from the outset for the students to have an open mind. She was able to take completely foreign arts and give an understanding or context to them so that the class could see it in a different light. She has great student participation activities like playing various ethnic instruments or learning a hula, as well as assignments that encouraged the students to go out and attend world music events.
Presents her material well to the class.
I think her knowledge of the subjects covered is amazing. She really does a good job explaining the material and answers our questions to the best of her knowledge.
She know's exactly what to do, she has great knowledge in what she teaches, she gets her students involved and doesn't make them feel uncomfortable, she has a great sense of humor. Overall Ms.Yang is one of my favorite professors I have had this semester. She's a very wonderful individual.
She has a very deep understanding in that field as well as very talented and encourage students to participate both in class or out of class activities.
She is very smart and very sweet.
Be patiently to teach her students and her class is very clean which important information are should learn for it.
She an energetic and enthusiastic teacher who shows passion in her work. She knows her material well and knows how to engage her students.
She knows what she is teaching and knows her area very well. She helps student and help her student to success in the class. Really good teacher.
ENTHUSIASTIC, and very informative
she is very intelligent, straight to the point, and encourages student to participate in class. she makes the class going in an interesting way. she is very considerate.
We could really trust her with the subject. She seems to really love world music and it was fun learning it from her.
She is a very knowledgeable professor. She comes to class ready. She knows what she is talking about. A friendly professor. She would joke around sometimes which makes the class/environment a fun and a great place to learn.
She is so kind. She always responses to students' questions until students can understand and solve their unclear points. Also, she always prepares many sources to teach. Students can understand easily about her lectures through her well preparing.
Mrs. Yang's major strength as a teacher would be teaching her material.
very organized, shared interesting information
Her work is straight up.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
Perhaps make the final worth more (20pts), offer more EC opportunities (1-5pts), discuss assignments first (taking reading notes BEFORE the chapter lecture was not very helpful, in my opinion). Should also touch-base with students individually.
No changes are needed.
I don't have any suggestions to make any changes. I like the way she teaches her class.
I have nothing for Ms.Yang to change, she's doing a great job
Add a little more variety to classes. Please don't make us just analyze timbre and organology.
None
Nothing really
No
none, except more time on presentations
none. she's very good as a teacher.
I liked that we got to playbon instruments and liked if we did that more.
I think that she does not have to change anything.
I can't think of a way to help you with this but i'd suggest you to try and make class more exciting and something to look forward to each day because at times, it got very boring. I still learned but it was boring and made me sleepy sometimes. I apologize for that but if there's a way you could pump up the class, i'd suggest you make an attempt at it.
none
Elaborate more on topics rather than around the bush.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She told the whole class that if we are struggling with learning the material or preparing for quizzes we can see her during her office hours.
Explain in detail
consistent reminders about assignments and events.
clear instruction pervide
The professor had office hours.
She always made class discussion open for everyone and answered questions directly. She also made sure that the class knew when every assignment was due, how to use research resources, and how to prepare for quizzes.
Her office was always open to her students that needed any help.
She's constantly asking us if we have any questions or comments or even concerns about something, and if so, she makes time for them after class
She's trying very hard to figure out each answers that students propose. Pretty understanding!
She was always very helpful and took concerns very well.
Be patiently to teach her students in her office hour until the student understand it.
She was more than welcome to help any student who needed it. If you needed extra credit or if you needed one on one time you could see her at her workshop.
She helps student when they need help, and help more than I ask.
she was nice
she would email back regarding a note why i couldn't make it to class and she emails students regarding any changes and upcoming events for our class.
she encouraged us to participate in class.
Whenever students don't understand the material, she is there to lend a hand. When students ask her questions about our topic that are unclear, she would try her best to answer those question in a simple way.
available through email
Didn't really.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend Man Yang to others because she adds some humor to lectures and brings in some instruments or guest speakers to class.
Yes , sure will
yes. great energy and entuhusiasm
yes, she's very good at teaching
Only if they are interested & fully committed to music. It's a large class, as well, so there is not much one-on-one attention except for those who speak up.
Most definitely. This class was an amazing introduction on how to experience music from cultures other than your own. She very effectively teaches you how to listen to music differently, and how to learn to appreciate the new and the strange.
Yes, because she's a great teacher to listen to and you can really see she really enjoy's the subject that she teaches. She also shows that she really cares for her students.
Yes. They would like the way she gets the students to interact with her while she's going over a lesson.
I would definitely recommend Ms.Yang to students because she's very knowledgeable in what she does and she has a great personality.
Of course, not only an easy class but still can learn a lot, looking forward to go to every class.
Yes, because she is very nice and she grades fairly.
Sure, because she is accessibility and having fun in her class.
Yes I would because she is an awesome teacher and her class is very interesting if you are passionate about music.
Yes, because her class is not hard and you still can learn a lots from the class.
yes, she is smart
would strongly agree because she is an effective teacher. her course is very clear.
sure because she isn't just one of those professors that you sit and there's a lecture. That's it. But this professor offers more than that.
I would recommend Professor Yang to students because her class is fun. There was never a dull moment in her class. She discussed different kinds of music from different countries all over the world. Her discussions are easy to understand. Powerpoints are straight to the point. The exams are easy as well.
I want to recommend Ms. Man Yang to other students because they can learn about music with having a fan. Not just read a text or study. They will be able to enjoy studying. Also, she has high motivation to teach, so her high motivation encourages students to study more.
Yes, I would recommend Mrs. Yang to other students because she's very laid and she knows her materials very well.
yes, great class

Thank you for teaching me on the last quiz, that was the best grade in all the quiz.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She is very nice and understandable.
As an instructor, she is very knowledgeable about the course. I have always felt comfortable in class as she has provided a positive atmosphere conducive to learning. She shows great concern for all of her students and is very personable and easy to talk to. I have always been able to come to her without any hesitation if I had questions or needed help. Her strengths include, but is not limited to, course knowledge, artistry, a high standard of technicality, and the ability to communicate, demonstrate, and clarify materials covered in class.
She is very understanding and patient. She loves to help students even if it means to stay after class.
Very nice, she is always willing to help and work with you.
She pushed me to try harder, even though I thought I couldn't or complained. She said to keep trying and practicing and eventually I will get it. She didn't modify things which made me feel like she really thought I could do it.
Man Yang was my teacher in my first semester in college and I consciously sought out another class with her as I not only enjoy music but her method of teaching which is very kind and encouraging to me as a freshman student and strong in that you see her expertise and feel that her strength comes from great preparation and forethought. As it took courage to finally go to college, I have found Ms. Yang to be an inspiring role model as I pursue my college degree. She really goes the extra mile to take note of each students needs and how she can help them improve. Her stream of encouraging words is the water that helps this little first year seedling grow as a college student.
caring, good teacher, patient, clear, knowledgeable
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Although the course is focused on individual learning. I found it useful to partner up with classmates during down time. As Ms. Yang does her best to attend to all students, I think it would be beneficial to many of students to help each other, while waiting for her to attend them. Other than that, the course is fine just the way it is.
It would be great if she can give out hand out of each music notes in the begining of the class and make us memorize it on and regonize it on the music sheet and on the keyboard. So that it would help us later on to be able to read notes quicker.
N/A
None, great class :)Fun, interesting the way taught. Challenging but enjoyable. I learned a lot.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She showed each student individual attention and has given them feedback when needed. She has also allowed second opportunities for students. And, she has gone above and beyond to help students simplify complicated material.
Her office hours are almost everyday which make her very accessible.
She will help students any time they need help with music or fingering or anything.
She gives out extra credit opportunities and she always stays after class to help out. She gives out good advice.
Man Yang really listens to each of her students. She made special efforts at the beginning of the year in both classes I've taken from her to help the students get to know each other and break the ice. This really helped a lot as so often students retreat into their cell phones the minute class ends. I've noticed her extra effort has brought more student communication and I think this makes the college experience more complete. She offers make-up tests in her office and is available for counseling on class work and has stayed 10 minutes after class helping me where I was stuck in an assignment. She is a very devoted teacher and I feel fortunate to have her for my first piano class.
Stayed late after class to work longer with students. Contacted students who stopped showing up to class
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her to other students. Not only does she make the class fun, Ms. Yang knows how to teach and has the personality to go with it.
Yes! She is very compassionate for teachig and willing to help students
Yes, I learned a lot from her.
Yes! She cares for the students and she treats everyone equal.
yes- all of the above listed
Yes, because she is a really good piano teacher and it was a pleasure to take her class

I just wanted to personally thank you for allowing to take this class. I have had a wonderful experience in Mus 121C and I want to wish you the best in the future. You have a little addition to the family on the way, you'll be a great mommy. Thank you again.
I will always remember my freshman year music teacher with fond affection and gratitude
She is a really good teacher and I'm very pleased with this course and with her instruction and would take it again and encourage others to do so as well

She is really good at the piano and really helped me when I needed it
She is so kind and her explan is really good.
She is direct and state students weak points.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
not only to Man Yang but also other music teachers: it would be nice and more efficient if the school installs a camera which is able to film the teacher when he or she plays a piece of music. If so, the students can look at the teacher playing at the same time and learn from that.
N.A
Having the final recital before our last quiz was a little weird it was okay, I would have rather had it reversed. A lot of us students took too much time to practice the final instead of the quiz songs and some did bad in the last quiz.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
once, I could not be able to go to classes. she gave me a call to update what the classes went over. She showed concern if she could help me with anything.
N.A
She went to every student and asked them if they needed help, and she asked to hear our progress with songs
She always care about studeants if they have problms.
She scheduled one-one appointments for students who she feels need more attention.

Professor Yang is well educated about music. She communicates with the students very effectively and is clear on the topics in which she presents in class. She is always accessible via email and in person and makes absences, make up work and understanding easily accessible to her students. She is great with updated her students via email about performance opportunities so that they can make extra credit points. Overall, she is a very good professor.
She got along with everyone is class and set a good atmosphere in class. She encouraged participation in class,
Openness, honesty, organization, care.
She's had a very inclusive class. Music analysis with personal opinions, she brought instruments to class and let us handle them, group discussions, and activities on rhythm, dance and the International Festival.
She delivers the content of her classes very clearly and makes it very easy to understand.
very organized contents with appropriate media resources, so her classes were easy to understand.
She has a wide range of instrumebts, some of which we got to see physically. We attended special musical genres, and she is also very approachable, friendly.
she is very kind, and understanding. she is also knowledgeable about each different theme she went over.
Explains subject in a simple way! made it easer for students to understand. She Knows her subject well, and she listens to students too!
Her explanation is always very clear. She knows how to avoid boring atmosphere so we could enjoy some workshops and students' presentations as well.
Knowing her stuff. Being an awesome person.
Her major strengths are making sure each student understands the material well. She provides a lot of visuals and audio for learning purposed and makes everything interesting and fun to learn.
Her lectures were always well-organized and whenever students asked questions about the lectures, she gave us a easily understandable answer to it.
Immediately, I was won over to this teacher's kind and graceful manner. Her love of music and ethnomusicolgy is clear and she makes it easy for the class to enjoy each culture. I am excited to tell my landlord when I pay rent that I know what Pansori music is! Music is central to my life, so I enjoyed every aspect of this class but heretofore -as a multi-tasking single mom had never given myself permission to learn about music in world cultures. It has affected my songwriting and composition for the better, I think.
she is nice and professional. knows how to help and respect her students.
she loves music, know about it very much. also she helps students ver much.
She seems open to showing many cultures with out judgement.
Makes the class fun by bringing in hands on activities.
She knows what to teach during the lecture.
Tutorial, good explanation.
Her lectures were very clear and well organized.
She knows how to make a class fun
Very knowledgeable in the subject. Makes it easy to learn.
Showing us good examples to have a better understanding of the topic.
Man yang gives good lectures that followed according to the exams.
Professor Man Yang is a young teacher so she was very easy to approach if i ever had any questions. I really enjoyed the classes when we had to hands on class dancing. I personally really enjoyed that and I hope she continues to keep that music 107 tradition. It really brings a lot of life into our academic day. The hula dancing and bollywood dancing exercises was a lot of fun. She was always available outside of class during his office hours. She always encourage us to seek help if we ever had any questions. She was teacher that definitely showed a lot of concern for her students and always wanted the best for them.
Passion, understanding, wealth of information and guidance to resources, awesome personality.
She is very well organized and prepare. She is also prompt when it comes to updating grades.
She knows the subject she teaches well, very engaging, fair grader, and passion for what she teaches shows in each lecture.
She is really fair teacher. She is soooooooo nice teacher. I love her very much.
Professor Yang is a very kind hearted, very well oriented professor with her students, her material, and everything she did with our class. She was very informative and fun and being a PHD student she was very aware of how we felt as students and adapted her material towards us which was very nice in our opinion. I really enjoyed having her as my professor for this class.
She is very enthusiastic and passionate about her course subject. Also, she is very educated in the matter and always knows how to answer our questions or point us in the right direction to finding the answer.
She's really nice! Also, very knowledgeable about her field of study.
Beryl's strengths came majorly in the form of enthusiasm, passion, and knowledge of her subject. It was so exciting to come to class each day, because I know she has something awesome to teach me. Granted, this is entirely a fabulous section of education - where else do we get to analyze and learn about musical influence through world cultures?! Her passion was contagious, and encouraged me to keep at it, because there's always something awesome to learn. Also, she is very empathetic to us, having been a long time student herself. It seems many teachers, once they're not students anymore, forget how stressful it can be to try to manage everything all at the same time. However, she was very understanding with all of our needs.
She really knew the material and it was great that she provided hands on activities and active activities as well as samples of instruments.
Professor Yang knew the subject area very well. She is also well organized which helped with the classes. I liked how she provided examples of instruments and made us think for ourselves.
She has great activities. Her powerpoint are easy to follow.
good power points
she knew what she was talking about and made it a good learning experience for me in her class
She is very helpful and kind, and talented as a musician herself. Her love of ethnomusicology pours through in her class teaching.
She make her lectures very interesting by telling her own experience on the music field.
She gives a fun atmosphere for students to learn. She often joke with her students but still makes a point on the lecture being discussed. She has her schedule that she follows, which can make student do advance work and not cram.
Great professor, knew her stuff, and thought us really well. I learned a lot from her.
she fair
She is fun and knowlegable about the music class she is teaching.
I thought it was really helpful how she didn't provide the lecture notes on Laulima. Copying the notes by hand were helpful in a way because it helped me recall information more easily. I also enjoyed days where we learned how to dance hula and bollywood dances. Study guides for quizes were also helpful in times of quizes.
Her passion for the subject taught, and how she has the class participate in discussions.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
I don't think there should be any changes, this semester was fun and i enjoyed her class.
None, the class was a joy to come to.
Maybe create a google document with a collection of youtube and other media examples of muisc we haven't been able to cover in class.
No changes.
further explanation of computer systems used and compatibility, for the older student, would be helpful.

Nothing, she does a great job.
Less lectures
No change, everything perfect

none
No changes are needed.
I can't think of any changes if anything the more hands on dancing would be better for the class and make it even more interesting.
No Changes as to say on how the subject is being thought, but here is a thought to consider. I believe in the syllabus it does not mention it but, how this course should be described a little more and inform the student that the approach on culture by the means of studying culture through, ritual music, deity worship of various nationalities. just to consider those who do not want to participate in such practices.
none
No thing to suggest because he is perfect already.
None she was great.
None. Her course is superb.
I can't really think of any.
Keep at it, and maybe be a little more aggressive in asking for student participation. I feel awful, my class was so so so quiet when it came to class discussions. Sometimes I felt like I was the only one participating. I think with a little more encouragement (maybe a greater amount of points placed on class participation?) the class may chip in a little more.
Passing around the sign-in sheet right when class starts

no she i a awesome teacher i was glad to learn form her
more hands assignment. say like when we learned how to dance and stuff, i like when we did that it made it more fun and interesting

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Professor Yang is the most concerned and understand professor I have had so far since attending KCC. I had a really rough few weeks where i consistently missed class because of family health issues at home, and she would email me to check in and let me know what i missed and my graded being affected. She always kept me updated with performances and opportunities for improvement, and she is very straight forward with her intent to help her students succeed in her class. Although i may pass this class with a low grade due to my personal issues, there is no way i could be upset with her because she is such a caring women and wants the best of her students. -Dwayne :)
She encouraged students, especially if the student was shy or scared she made it easy to talk and participate in class.
She was very encouraging, learned student's names, gave lots of extra credit, straightforward powerpoints and study guides, gave loads of helpful announcements and emails.
Gentle questions, emails reminding about missed assignments, and invitations to come see her after class or during her office hours.
She made her time available for any students who needed help with anything, and she always attempted to her lectures interesting, so students wouldn't get bored.
Making extra time out of class. Involving us as a groupYes
if help was needed it was given, in times of emergencies she was understanding and helped you through it. if things needed a deeper explanation she helped you to understand.
She encorages us to do things! She answers all the questions with her patience! She tell us to see her in the office oftenly.
We had great chance to understand various music with some experiences, such as dancing or listening to live music.
Responding right away to emails. Meeting up outside of class for extra help.
She did a few ice breaker games so give us a chance to meet our classmates. She also encouraged hands on participation.
in many, many ways. she is always answering students questions after each class and gives so much of her time.
she creats chances for students to get extra points. she always asks us if we understand or not , and asks us for suggestion. i aksed her for help which is not related to her job, she helped me, and give extra information and suggestion.
she is always here for help us.
Always checking in with us to make sure we understand.
Always giving us extra credit opportunities
She always seem to be happy to help out students.
She take times for us if we have question or need helps.
She always brought her speakers to lectures. It helped us to listen example of music when class speakers did not work. She also, brought many music instuments.
She always reminded us to do things and always answered our questions right away if we were to email her
She was always available outside of class during his office hours. She always encourage us to seek help if we ever had any questions. She was teacher that definitely showed a lot of concern for her students and always wanted the best for them.
all ways attentive, concerned asking us if the information given was understood and if anyone had any question, also offered her office hours.
Informed us of deadlines ahead of time, was very accessible to students (answered emails quickly and explained all that was expected of us)
She is concerned about students very much. She tries to encourage students listen to difference culture music.
She often looked at the bright side of situations, an example of this would be say a student was not doing good at the beginning of the semester she often attempted to cheer them on and encourage them to work harder as she explained that the semester is far from over.
She gave us many extra credit opportunities and was available for help whenever we needed.
She offered time after class to help students, and also replied to emails very quickly.
She was so awesome! She was so patient with all of us, and the awkward silences in the class, without being angry or upset with us for our lack of participation. I feel that she really knows what we're going through. It's so fantastic to have a young, hip teacher like her expanding our minds. It really felt like a very well organized lunch date, with lots of great topics to discuss. It was very friendly, with the perfect mix of casual and formal settings.
She tell us about assiginments every week and always emails us with notifcations.
she would tell them if they need help to go see her or email her questions
She always made sure to tell us about our assignments and if we did bad on something to check up with her and make sure everything was okay.
tells grade
She would write comments next our grades in the gradbook on laulilma.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Has a great understanding for the subject matter Eager to teach
Man Yang knew her material well and always came to class eager to teach her students .
She is very knowledgable in the subject area. She also provides thorough information for the students.
She is very humor person and her lecture is do organized, so it is easy to understand the contents
That she was organized.
I think she did great as a teacher. She always encourages us to participate in activities in class and is always prepared during her lectures.
Her ablity to bring the students attenetion towards the boards, how you ask is by having short clip and real music from the places we learned.
Ms. Man Yang's major strengths as a teacher is she can motivates and engage her students and she's also a excellent communicator.
Ms. Yang has a positive energy and isn't overly critical of her students. She is patient and easy-going.
Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was that she created a fun learning experience that made me want to learn more. She knew a lot on the subject at hand which made it easier for the class to learn.
Music World Culture
She informs students with assignments when the assignment is close to the deadline. She encourages every student to participate in class. I love her personality.
she explained well all contents to students.
Ms Yang is very energetic and quite passionate about her subject/students. Allows the students freedom to voice their opinion with a positive, non-condescending atmosphere. Presented material clearly which made learning the subject matter interesting, factual and surprisingly fun. Had the course grading/policies clearly stated in the syllabus and was right on schedule. Found it attractive that Ms Yang is a student herself and closely relates being a student and reminds about deadlines, the breakdown of grades and to not loose focus. Wonderful teacher. Debating about switching to a Music Major. Mahalo
As a teacher, Mrs. Man Yang's strength is knowing the subject well. She is very active and she tries to get all the students involve in all activities.
She clear on speaking of her topic as a teacher and also strength on each topic she talk about
knows what shes talking about.
She truly encouraged the students to think for themselves and discuss certain topics among their peers. Although the students in the class were not too willing to participate, she never gave up and truly made the class a fun environment to learn.
She is very understanding and receptive.
She is a very outgoing teacher that encourages people to get to know each other in the classroom. She shows concern for her students by helping them do whatever is possible to gain extra points as well as give advice on where to go for certin assignments.
she obviously knew what she was talking about when she was teaching and she tryed to work with an early morning class that consisted of people who werent all that interested in talking. she always seemed up beat and never really discouraged.
She really knew each cultures musical area well!
Her major strength is getting everyone to participate in class so no can ever fall asleep and keeps you learning the lesson.
She tries to get everyone to get involved in our class discussions
She is very knowledgeable about on the subject. She seems like she enjoys the subject and is passionate about it.
Just her attitude and the way she always tried her best to get us to participate, even though no one wanted to.
Everything. Loved the class!
Very friendly and interactive. She is always to get the students to participate. Well educated. Teaches well for a young instructor.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
more time showing the powerpoints
There's no need for change. She's a great professor!
For updating grades, she should put in the current grade so that the students can see what grade we are getting in her class.
having people with disablities to take their test fairly by not having weird exams that doesnt make sence,
I don't have any suggest to her because she's a great teacher
If she would like to be a bit more commanding as a teacher, that could be good. I like the relaxed atmosphere but sometimes students were just being lazy and she could have pushed them to try a bit harder. But generally, I like the way she teaches.
I don't have any changes to suggest.
None
I think she did a really great job at her teachings.
Everything was good.
Bring more instruments to show to the class.
One of my suggestion is having a group project, that way students have a way to get to know each other.
Go through topics slower.
Maybe by taking in the atmosphere of the class she can conclude that the class is not willing to participate, and strictly resort to a lecture.
None

dont require a book if your only going to assign notes for it that never really apply to class. its a waste of 100 dollars. try to use more than just powerpoints to give lessons. find some other ways to teach about some sections and try to make it a bit more interactive.
None!
I do not think she needs any changes.
Let us know when the due dates are. I didn't know until a while that we were supposed to submit our work before class starts.
Although we did follow the timeline, I really feel the class could be a little bit more organized. On the first day of instruction, we had our first homework assignment but she didn't really go over how to do it and didn't really announce that it was due before the next class. The only reason that I knew about it, was that I am the type of student that immediately writes down everything from each class's syllabus/time line in my planner. Had I not did that immediately, I would not have done the homework. I feel like she could have given a courteous" hey class, just reminding you to look at your time line and that your first assignment is due before next class." Also, there was not a lot of instruction on how to do the assignment itself. Although it was only notes and it was only worth 1 point -- it would be nice to have a guideline on how to do it. The only instruction we really got about it throughout the semester, was that we have to highlight interesting facts and questions about the text. There is not guideline as far as minimum pages or words to write, what kind of questions to write, what kind of interesting facts to write... etc. We didn't really follow the book anyway -- all the notes that we used on the exam were given to us in powerpoint. The book is very, very expensive. It's over $100. If we are expect to have this book in our possession, I'd really have appreciated it more utilized in the class itself. I honestly feel like I wasted a lot of money on a book I didn't need and as a student that struggles financially, it really affects me. If I had known in the beginning that most of the material will be given to us in class, I would not have wasted my money on buying it. I also really hated that our grade is basically based on a 100 point scale. That means that every point we get is 1% of our grade. I'm not sure if this is a common system, as it is possible that that classes that I have taken just so happened to all have a different type of grading system, but personally it was scale I really disliked. I am confident I will get a good grade, but it doesn't mean that I didn't have anxiety about it all semester, just because everything we did was obviously heavily weighed in our final grade. I appreciated the extra credit assignments, though.

Expansion on more musics
Dont make the students interact with each other so much. More so with her.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
study sessions in class
Yes definitely, she always asked how the class was and encouraged student participation.
She would always ask students if we had any questions. She would also take the time to explain things if students did not understand something that is being covered in the lesson.
She asked us a lot if we have any questions and that she said that she can help us.
having outside learning
By being honest to her students and being consistent with her students. she's there when you need help.
She listens very well to students' opinions and gives deadline reminders often.
She showed concern for students by continuously pushing us in the class enforcing class participation which made each and every one of us have to learn and stay in tune to the subject.
She talks to each of us privately
By encouraging students to come to class, participate, and do their homework so they can pass.
she beforehand noticed to students to do not missing any assignments
Ms Yang showed concern for students by reminding of the musical performances allowing us to attend at our convenience. Also offered a discounted price of admission to some great shows. Ms Yang always asked during lecture if the material is presented to fast or any questions.
She shows concern by making sure that each students are right on track. She constantly remind her students about the homework that is due. She is also willing to go out there and provide important informations.
Email students and write things on the whiteboard of important things
asked many times if there was any questions
She gave us ample opportunity for extra credit, always informed us of when assignments were due way in advance and reminded us along the way, went over our grades and how to calculate them.
She understand and helps out , if there are areas that we don't understand.
Proffersor Yang showed concern formthe students by taking time after class to help people who are falling behind or to discuss an assingment.
you could tell by the way that she helped students that talked to her.
She told us when assignments were due.
Before or after class she would go to us or ask us to speak to her after class
she'd always ask us if we had questions and answered any if we had them.
By always helping us and showing that if we had questions to ask her!
She always emailed you if you emailed her first
Constantly keeping us aware of assingments due.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes
Yes, because she is knowledgeable in her material and cares for her students learning.
Yes. Her class is a great experience. It is very informative and it helps you to build up confidence with the presentation that everyone will have to do and as well as when she asks questions to random students about the lecture. She is a great professor and understands the needs of her students.
Yes, because her class is so fun and well organized
Yes, because she is a good teacher.
i would give her a neutral, but she is still young so she has alot of expericence as well.
Yes, I would recommend Ms. Man yang to other students because she has a great relationship with all her student such as helping us and treated us fairly.
Yes. Because the class is pleasant and easy.
Yes I would because she was well organized in her teachings and made it a great learning environment.
yes
Yes, she is a great teacher :)
yes....of course..she is a good teacher.
Yes.
I would recommend Man Yang to students, especially when they want to lean about music. Her class is actually fun because you get to do inside and outside activities.
yes its a fun class thats not too stressful
I would recommend her to those students who are actually willing to participate in class.
I would definitely recommend Miss Yang to students because I learned a lot from her class and I was encouraged to participate in class.
Yes because she is very enthusiastic and encourages student to be friends.
i would recommend her to people who could understand her. sometimes she is a little hard to understand because of her accent and some people really have a hard time with anything but perfect English. other than that she is a fine teacher that still has a little bit more to learn about teaching.
Yes! I Surely will!
Yes i would recommend her to other student, she is fun and easy to learn from.
Yes, she makes the class fun
It would honestly depend on the student. I would not suggest her in general, but to specific types of students ( studious, mature, serious, music/culture appreciating students...) I would definitely suggest her as they would learn a lot in this course and would appreciate how knowledgeable she is. I also feel like in our particular class, as a class as a whole, we lacked a certain level of maturity. I feel like that kind of moved the general attitude of our entire class into a more negative direction. I don't think this was Ms. Yang's fault. The attitude of my peers affected me also, as I was distracted by how disrespectful some students were to different cultures. I am not sure if Ms. Yang has noticed this, but I don't think that this affected HER attitude, which I appreciated very much. Learning a new culture requires a bit of maturity, as we are learning about something that is completely foreign to us. I didn't like how the class would laugh at something that was not meant to be funny, just because it was foreign. Again, this is not something that is Ms. Yangs fault, but this is why I would not suggest her as their instructor to everyone, just because I strongly believe this course should not be taken by just anyone.
Yes I would because shes sweet, fun, and makes everything easy to understand
Yes I would, She is one of the greatest professors I ever had in college and at KCC.
Yes. i learned much from the class.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
We need more music professors, or professors in general, like her!
She is so helpful. She returns email as soon as possible
When explaining things she should explain them better.
very smart.
All I can say to Ms. Man Yang is she's a great teacher I appreciate what she's done to us.
Great instructor whom I learned a lot from.
Awsome
Just Thank you...
Well cultured. Passionate about her subject.
Mrs. Beryl is a great teacher. She really knows the subject that she is teaching. She also have a lot of personal experience based on the topic that she talks about. She have a great sense of humor.
shes nice and shes young like us so its easy to learn from here
I really really enjoyed how the class was organized. The powerpoints were effective and to the point. There were no lectures that I thought were boring or meaningless. She really taught me a lot and I am thankful.
She is always in time , read to help students and always come to class with a nice smile.
She should teach teach. ore classes.
she is a great person and really cares about what shes teaching.
Mahalo :)
Shes nice and a great teacher.
It is hard to make suggestion on how to teach this class because of the material that is covered, but I really find powerpoints in general are boring so if there was another way to get us to learn the material besides powerpoints, I think that would be good. I'm not saying that EVERY class was powerpoints, there was just a lot of them. I just wish there was less.
Thanks so much for this semester it was great and I learned a lot! Great work and May God Bless You in every way possible! :)
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
the power points
How to analyze music is something I learned how to so specifically in the class. I now listen to music and am able to recognize various characteristics of a specific song . Also through exploring different types of music in other parts of the world I am more appreciative of other types of music .
The presentation that everyone has to do provides an opportunity to build up self confidence. Also the questions that the professor asks also provides the same opportunity.
Exams are not that hard
I found out about the music is the different cultures, like the instruments and I know what different textures, organolgy, pitch, rhythm and form there is.
learning that not every teacher will actually give you their full attention and "college" is "college". Reality will set in real fast.
I find this course very interesting and I learned different kind of music in the world.
What I found the most valuable and helpful about the course was keeping an open mind about different cultures and try something new.
Yang focuses on each of us.
Learning about other cultures and understanding their kind of music.
I knew a lot of information through this course.
The culture presented in each presentation by Ms Yang and each student about their Music presentation.
The most valuable and helpful about the course is having knowledge on the history of music and the type of music in different countries.
I found reading the book and writing notes helps me on this course
learning music from my own culture.
She gave us a chance to express our musical individuality, which I really appreciate. I always felt included in the lectures, and felt that she was genuinely interested in what we thought of the music we were listening to. I'm sorry that the class was not more willing to participate.
The music cds are very valuable and helpful plus the extra music she emails us to learn more and appreciate the topic for that weekk.
The ability to analyze music and appriciate different music of other cultures.
learning how to analyze music is probably one of the most helpful things that she had taught us, its something that ill use through out my entire career.
That you learn to appreciate each cultures music :)
The music analysis is very helpful.
Learning how to describe music, it makes remembering term for a certain music easier.
She gives a lot of insight about what we cover in class. It is always a good thing when the instructor obviously cares about the subject he/she is teaching and that was very obvious in Ms. Yang. I probably won't remember everything we covered for the rest of my life, but I will most likely always remember certain things about diffferent cultures and their music for the rest of my life.
Just learning how to appreciate music in a deeper way and learning all types of different wats people use music in
Just the fun environment
Worldy Knowledge.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She tries to have a sense of humor, and tries to teach the piano class in a authoritive and in a curriculum set class atmosphere.
she always teach me piano easily. And if I cant do it or understand it, she try to understand me well.
Her major strengths are having patience, constant encouragement, being a positive influence, answering questions with insight, having knowledge that is pertinent, very punctual, and always willing to help her students.
She is very open and willing to dedicate extra time to all of her students. She is the only teacher I have had this semester who I could tell really wanted her students to do well and succeed.
She has good communication skills, personable but professional. She makes sure the students understand her and provides a comfortable work environment where lectures are very open for better perspective. The entire curriculum is well organized and goal oriented.
She makes sure that everyone is on the same page, doesn't teach new material too soon or too late.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I wish she could give me more personal instruction and have a longer class.
Her class is so best
I recommend giving more homework like memorizations of half page pieces or maybe even short 5 question quizzes at the beginning of class. Yes it is more work but I think it would greatly increase learning capacity and confidence.
The only problem I ever had during class is when we would get time to practice and she would call each student up idividually to play on the big piano. The big piano is very loud and it's hard to hear yourself play even with the headphones on. I would have appreciated it if that were something we did when we first got to class. Gotten our critiques then had practice after or even lobby for a bigger classroom. I know we all need practice on the big piano so it's difficult to think of a real solution but that classroom is so tiny it's easy to get drowned out. Outside of class, I had a problem trying to get my portfolio together (I have never done a portfoolio before). Maybe just a more specific outline or examples of past portfolios.
none
n/a.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She tried to find out, why certain students would be absent on days.
She was able to make time outside of class to meet up and she would also dedicate time during class to help others that requested or that she felt it was necessary. She was also lenient when it came to deadlines and was able to accommodate for unusual circumstances.
She would reach out to us and offer us as many opportunities as possible. A lot of teachers have to be hunted down for help, where as she would take immediate action and be ready with a helping hand.
Very attentive
She made sure we all had individual time with her to practice and helped us on our pieces.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her to other students if they have some prior piano knowledge, the class can get advanced and you need a lot of practice outside of class.
Yes, she is so kind. She can teach piano kindly so you dont need to worry about piano's ability
Yes because I believe anyone would love to learn piano under her guidance. She's very supportive and she's willing to offer more time than the class is scheduled for.
I would definitely and already have recommended her as a teacher. She is a great teacher. She is also a professional that loves what she does, what she is teaching, and she wants to see other people fall in love with it to. A LOT of hard work goes into her course but nothing about her class waas hard as long as you put forth the effort to practice.
Yes Good teacher, fun class, feels like time well spent.
Yes. She can teach thoroughly and makes sure that the whole class can play.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I believe Man Yang loves the piano. I wish she would share more of that knowledge with me in the classroom with more instruction on the songs, repretoirs.
She's just super cool and I than her for inspiring and encouraging me.
Her teaching style is easy to follow, her methods are effective, and her personality is spot on to deal with any kind of student. I respect her for being so patient and wiling to help us.
Sheʻs great! Young but well educated, open-minded and clearly passionate about music and teaching. I plan to take her music in world cultures class.
I'd take more classes from her!
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Learning to read musical notes and songs.
I could understand a little music theory as piano class. Piano is so good instrument. And then I was happy to play piano.
Everything. Also that piano is in my opinion a huge adrenaline rush to play in front of everyone. My first recital left me with an unbelievable feeling of accomplishment.
The avalability of the pianos. There were pianos outside, in private rooms, and even in her office. A lot of our coursework deended on us practicing on our own.
Piano helps me with music theory, and I like to play. She covered both and made it clear with any questions answered.
Everything.
19. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
young, passionate about piano, and conservative.
Good
Empathetic, Enlightening, and Professional.
The perfect teacher.
observant passionate kind
Sweet, caring, patient.
20. Other comments:
I hope I do well in the class, because we have two more classes left, a final repretoir, and quiz 5.

Thanks again Shiii Fuuu... You're the best...

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Several qualities that demonstrate her excellence of being a teacher are, enthusiastic character, informative content, and her passion in ethnomusicology.
She knows the area of study that she is teaching and all her points are very clear. I like how she teaches.
She is very friendly for all students, therefore the class was very lively.
She always have possible feedback whenever we give her answer even though it was right or wrong.
She knows her material and she cares about her students.
My music 107 teacher Man Yang is sweetheart. She concerns about students in every single class. First time when I attend the class, I surprised how she is a young teacher, then I was a little bit worried how it will be. However, I really impressed how she put effort into her lecture for class and I think every MUSIC 107 students felt her efforts during her lecture. For example, she has never stopped smiling during class, She always responds message, I can always check my grade the day I submitted assignment or took test. She also listen student carefully. If someone ask question about our study, in the next lecture, she prepare detail answer for everyone. I feel much more close to her than other professors. I used to believe that teacher/professor who are just teaching their study field because of their job, or some teachers are even no passion for their job like their obligation. I felt different to Mis Yang who is always trying to be improve herself such as communication with students and quality of her lecture. She also focus on how to enjoy music. In our class, we danced Hula with special Hula guest dancer. The other day, we sung and danced Indonesian traditional song with special guest from Indonesia who performed in 24th KCC International festival. I had been not interested in the event (KCC International festival), but since I attended the lecture, I changed my mind and visit the event for few times. It was very interesting experience for me, and now I am thank for Mis Yang because she gave me my motivation. She may young teacher and need more experience for some field, but I really proud of her who takes her job serious and has passion for it. I am glad to take her class this semester and if I have chance I would like to take her class again.
She is kind and patient, and her lectures and presentations in class are interesting. The videos and course materials were entertaining and made me interested in the subject. Very prompt in returning assingments and tests and readily available to students (answers emails very quickly).
The ability to make students laugh, have a good time learning. I really respect that she stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to teach in the US. Even though english is not her first language, she spoke very well and clear. Easy to understand.Recommended to anyone who enjoys the music of the world.
She knows how to grade each assignment and tests very fairly for each students. She knows what she doing and talking about and she tries her best to remind us what's coming up.
Her enthusiasm for the subject and her sense of humor make the class interesting to learn and be in.
As a teacher, you are well prepared, organized, fun, energetic, and really know your subject.
She's really understanding and takes genuine interest in her students' learning and in what they have to bring to the table as well. She's much better than the previous Mus 107 professor at KCC in my opinion. Beryl is really nice and helpful.
She knows her material very well and is always very understanding and cheerful.
Very fluent in the subject!!! Very easy going easy to talk to, and very patient.
Her strengths as a teacher are she is very involved with class participation, good listener, and well open-minded teacher.
She knew her subject, and you could tell that she loved teaching about it. She is a great teacher!
I enjoyed her lectures. I was able to keep up and follow all the power points without difficulty. Since this was an ethnomusicology class, she played music and us as the students would talk about the song and what we knew about it. Shed bring exotic instruments and guests to teach us these songs and it's culture.
Professor Yang is very patient with students and is passionate about the subject.
She is enthusiastic, passionate about the subject, and makes the information interesting.
She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the subject. She is very fair in grading and tries her best to relate the subject matter to the students on a level easy to grasp.
She is able to relate well with her students and always makes sure that everyone understands new ideas, words and concepts before moving on.
Her major strengths are that she knows this field of music, she encourages everyone to participate, and her teaching skills are excellent.
She is very patient, and explains the content of her lectures thoroughly. Mrs. Yang is always prepared for her lectures and she keeps the content well organized. She is passionate about what she teaches.
Her ability to engage her students and the way she is able to elaborate on the topic with her vast amount of knowledge. She is very friendly and able to relate to many of her students. The class is very organized and she is always able to give our test backs the next class. She provides students with every opportunity to become successful in her class.
She's a very nice and fair teacher. Knows a lot about this particular subject being taught. Very knowledgeable and trustworthy teacher.
Subject.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No changes except improving her awesomeness.
Nothing
None
None
I loved her attitude and teaching style. Though as a suggestion, perhaps she can post her PowerPoints online so that for those who missed a class can take down notes that they've missed that day. But other than that, no changes at all.
Just bring in more artists so they can demonstrate their music in a more hands-on type of way. Listening to different music was interesting but bringing in artists would just take it to the next level. Also making instruments would be fun as well.
Nothing.
I think that posting notes online for us to review would be very helpful. It would help us focus on the lecture more instead of diverting our attention towards copying notes.
I really dislike the book. It's boring, long, and not appealing. Through out your class I have been using your powerpoint and my notes taking in your class. The power point and have helped me a lot to study for your test, and not really reading or referring to the book. As for my preference I prefer multiple choice for test.
Perhaps offer the powerpoint slides on laulima. I understand the emphasis on writing notes for ourselves and how that supposedly helps with memory retainment. However, sometimes it's hard to write everything down.
I really like her style and wouldn't change anything.
No changes necessary.
It would be great if she incorporated more guess speakers in the class.
none, she was great!
None.
Place more emphasis (points) on class participation in order to get more response from students. While not the best method it is still effective.
Perhaps try and invite more people into the class to show their style of music, it was really fascinating and it would have been great to have one person for each unit we covered in class.
No changes because she already has the material down and her teaching techniques are the best.
There is no need for any changes.
Dont stop being awesome.
No changes I believe that everything is well organized and should be kept the way it is.
Nothing much.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
If necessary, she provided students with advising of any questions or concerns in her office.
She remembered all name of the classmates.
She are fairly when concern for students. Everyone could get help from her and she is friendly to help them.
She was available to help students whenever necessary, and also gave good feedback on how we were doing in class and on exams.
She brought a lot of music festival or concert informations.
She gave all her students a syllabus and sent out email reminders as well as reminders in class on upcoming events or assignments. She would also ask students if they had questions at the end of her lectures.
She always asks if we understand the material and we have dicussions frequently.
She taught us how we should write our paper properly in our own words, she created a jeopardy game for our midterm and final test to make us remember what we have learned.
She answers questions when we have them. She's also personable and considerate towards her students.
Thank you so much for being available in your office and through e-mail. And always helping us stay on track and care for your students to strive for the hightest.
She emails students and writes notes on the things that they submit.
She let me opt out of watching an Indian Movie because I didn't feel comfortable watching belly dancing.
She was always available even if she was a student herself. She was able to learn from us and took into accountability everyone's own opinion about anything we were discussing.
She hears students opinion then gives feedback.
Yes. Whenever I emailed her, she was sure to help me out
She would call on students for their opinion and was interested in what everyone would say.
She answered all student questions and never talked down to them.
She reminded us of deadlines, made sure the class understood the information, and encouraged questions.
She is always doing her best to get every single student engaged in class discussion. She always makes sure that every student understands the material thoroughly and completely.
She makes sure to make each lesson enjoyable while still teaching us all that we need to know for the tests. Also as I have said she makes sure we understand everything before going on.
She encourages students to participate in class discussions. She groups the students to discuss and asks us individually a question, so students would just answer a question she would ask us. She also gives feedback on work that we do (ex. powerpoints, etc.)
When she saw that we did not understand what was being taught, she taught it from a different angle. She took time to explain her lectures to individuals. When students had something to share, she listened intently with good eye contact.
She always was able to email the students on up coming events they could use for their event report essays and would remind people if there were scheduled to present next class.
We could email or ask her any questions we had, and also asked during class sometimes if everyone understood what was being taught.
She learned every students name after the first week of school. AMAZING, not a lot of teachers put that much effort into doing that!
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. Her knowledge of and passion for ethnomusicology show in her teaching. She is capable, clear, and comfortable to be around.
Yes, I would. She makes class interesting and fun. Class isn't too hard because she explains exactly what you need to do and it's not overwhelming- it's the perfect level of challenge and ease mixed into one. It's not an easy class, you have to know what you're doing and you have to know the material- but that's why it's great, because she makes learning fun in a sense.
Yes, she is a fun, caring and well prepared teacher.
Definitely yes because she is amazing.
yes, because i like how she's not always so serious and makes the class fun. but at the same time, we learn a lot. :)

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is a wonderful professor to take if interested in exploring the numerous aesthetics in music, worldwide.
Thank you, I had a good time.
And she is pretty as well.
Even though she's the teacher and we're the students, she shows us respect too.
I hope she continues to teach and remain passionate about the subject she teaches. Thanks to her, I am now listening to music generes I've never heard of before.

That I am glad that I took this class because I was able to get so much out of it. This class was a lot of fun and she should continue to teach this subject.
Nice, funny teacher.
GIVE MORE EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES PLEASE!!
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
It helped me to understand the implications of how world music played in a role in religion and society, in the past and presently. It also got me to comprehend how each culture's ideas of what music is, what its powers are, how it relates to other aspects of life, and how it reflects important things about its people and their view of the world. Overall, this course has impacted my view in music positively.
The slides and presentations.
I learned culture, geography, and history through music.
I have gain lots of information from the world music. Each religion has their old unique musical traditional which greatly represented their nation.
I got to learn about other cultures and how music is valuable everywhere you go.
Yes, I recommend to take her class. You will change your image of professor.
The concept of no music being better than the other and the exposure to such a wide variety of music and cultures.
Learning to appreciate the different types of music genres, even if some arent pleasing to listen to at all.
The history of some continents and country.
I enjoy and appreciate the exposure to music from many different ones, especially since all of the music traditions we covered are non-Western. It helped me gain a better perspective on music.
Learned a lot about different culture, respect to one another, learning to love different taste of music.
The emphasis on having an open mind.
I found most valuable that when I applied myself to studying I succeeded in learning things I thought I would never be able to understand.
It made me more aware of the similarities that world music share throughout multiple cultures.
I learned things I never knew about music around the world
I learned how music really expresses the culture it comes from. I've now developed that ear to distinguish which music comes from which culture, the instruments used, and the proper names for each group of instruments.
The variety of listening samples and guest musicians.
I actually learned a lot about other cultures music, much more than I thought I would learn in this class. And I love that I can actually apply this stuff in every day life. The material has already come in handy in unrelated school situations.
Man Yang is not afraid to admit she does not know an answer. She is humble and respective of the student's.
I got out of it exactly what I was expecting of the course and more.
I like the study guide she gives us for each exam, and when we have a class study session.
This class expaned my horizon of world music. I was exposed to differnt ethnic music that I found was enjoyable. It helped me find an appreciation for ethnic music and its unique qualities.
I found the the study guides very helpful for the test as well as the study session we had in class. They both really prepared you well for the test and so there wont be surprises on the test like how some other teachers do.
Knowing more about the music and instruments in different cultures was interesting and it might be helpful fo rme since im planning to be a music major.
Music is not just enjoyable beats and melodies. There is more to music and lyrics than just good metaphors and enjoyable tempos.

Thank you for making Music 107 a very enjoyable class for me. I learned a lot from this class.
good job and thank you
none
I wish I could take another class from her, but I may be moving next semester. I pray that she succeeds in everything that she does and wish her the very best. Whoever her next students are will be very lucky indeed :)
she rocks as a teacher!
In general I'm opposed to the college textbook scam. The arguments the publishers use to justify the high costs of textbooks do not hold against critical scrutiny. I would rather professors assign more affordable material (internet articles and books, standard books, their own books, etc.) As this is unlikely to change, I nonetheless appreciate that professor Yang required the condensed (and thus cheaper) version of the required textbook.
It's a fantastic course- the teacher really brings it to life.
Simply the best. Better than all the rest. Better than any other teacher that I have ever met.
thank you!!!
Overall great teacher!!! 10 out of 10 :))))
Great class, would also want future teachers to teach like her.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
she has made this class a fun learning experience.
She is funny and knows alot of interesting things about world music.
She makes her best for students to participate and make her lectures more dynamic. She always asks for students feedback in order to make sure that students are understanding the lecture, and she is always attentive to any doubts students may have. She always arrives to class with a lot of energy and a positive attitude, which makes the class much more fun and dynamic.
Very enthusiastic, kind, approachable, and knowledgable about world music and fun in class. Comes up with interesting activities to help the students better learn different types of music. Uses her resources and friends in her major to bring us into the field of ethnomusicology, for example she brought in friends that either studied or knew a specific kind of music to present and elaborate to the class that we had to study.
Man Yang has a strength and love for teaching music. She was very helpful with any questions I had.
She made everything easy for us to understand and made clear that she knew what she was talking about through experience.
The class was always reluctent to disscuss but she was patient with them while still trying diffrent techniques to get every one involved.
Ms Yang was very organized and it was really easy to follow her lectures. She is personable yet professional. Great instructor!
Her honesty and passion to teach.
She provides helpful study guides and is clear about what's going to be on the exams.
she knows a lot of music culture and very kind
I could see she wants to teach us. Good teacher.
She is very knowledgeable of her field. Because she knows so much, she has a lot to share with students. She tries to explain things in terms that we would understand, and she gives lots of audio and video samples which are very helpful for understanding many of the concepts in a world music course. She encourages us to think for ourselves, but she still knows the areas in which we need more guidance. She gets us thinking outside of the box, outside of our comfort zone. Although she initially assists us in trying to understand what is going on with the many complicated areas of music, she slowly but surely releases the "training wheels" to the point where we are able to do understand it on our own.
she knew the the content well
she understands and knows her subject extremely well. she would encourage and make students interact in class.
She encourages everyone to participate. She is very well prepared every class and also organized.
Man Yang's strengths as a teacher are describing different types of music and giving the students great information on all types of music that she teaches.
Getting the whole class involved in whatever we do.
always showing concern for the student and understanding their needs in order to learn. She is very helpful and flexible.
She was very organized and clear throughout every section. She had her resources up on time. The work was simple for everyone to understand.
She knows her subject very well and always tries to get participation from the class.
Professor Yang's greatest strength as a teacher is that she does just that. She teaches us. She is very compassionate about her students and is very obvious that she cares about us just by how she teaches.
Knew the subject very well
Man Yang's major strength as a teacher is knowing the subject well enough so that she could help us relate it to things we knew or how to remember them well enough for tests
teach the music
very good teacher.
She is very well prepared and thorough in the subject she teaches. She's very encouraging of students to form opinions of the music that's listened to in class. You can tell she wants her students to do the best they can and she gives lots of opportunities to do so.
she is well prepared. she motivates her students to participate. she knows what she is teaching and makes it fun for the class to learn.
She knows a lot about music.
Ability to present and teach content clearly
She's really friendly and always willing to help. Really easy to talk to and easy to understand what we are talking about in class.
Very knowledgeable with the areas that we covered, really good motivator too
She provides the material work by Power Point. Her way of teaching World music is having the class listen to music samples and watch video performances.
She knew her subject well and taught her lessons the same each day, which was good organization. She always got the class to participate and asked for suggestions on how to make our learning experience better. She stuck by the syllabus and if she changed it, she gave ample time for rescheduling. She was always available to us after class.
She knows the subject she's talking about, and you can tell she loves it. It shows through. Also, as the subject matter does require discussion and different views, she encourages us to talk amongst ourselves and discuss different traits and styles of music. On top of it all, she listens to her students comments and suggestions and takes them into account.
Professor Man Yangs strengths as a teacher was that she never really talked down to us as a class which therefor made me that much more comfortable in class to ask questions and such and also made me respect her that much more. She always showed concern for our learning after all her powerpoint notes slides, in case we had questions or thoughts on the subject. She is one of my favorite teachers and I would love to take a class instructed by her again.
She knows what she is teaching very well. She knows how to handle the class in a very good manner. I love her. Sheʻs a great teacher! :)
I think Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was how passionate she was about this subject. She was very friendly was welcoming and that created a good learning environment. I wasn't afraid to ask questions because I knew she would be helpful and try her best with giving me an answer.
she knows what she's talking about.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
Nothing.
None
I feel she should drop a lesson or two and focus on the major music themes.
add more cultures in the course, other than asia and america
should decrese little writting assignment. If person do not have idea for writing assignment such as reading paper, probably it is little difficult. hope should do more explain about writting assignment.
I think disscussing it as a class worked better than breaking off into smaller groups as the course went on. Once people were familar with the terminoligy and comforatable using it not as much of a need for the smaller group discussions. They seemed to digress slightly. Also the class where we got up and had to find students that could do one of the 4 things helped bring class together and would suggest doing that sooner in the course.
None
None!!!
no idea.
Be more confident! It is obvious that you are very knowledgeable of your field, and you are always very prepared each time you come to class. Take pride in knowing that you are constantly on top of your game!
try to make the presentations differ
the tests would be shorter, it felt like there was a lot of information that needed to be remembered.
During the course she has been changing for the better becuase of our presentations we had to do in class. She learned from us which makes her powerpoints and presentations/instructions easy to understand. The powerpoints show visual pictures, not too many words, and videos which keeps the students entertained.
I suggest that she should give more hand outs.
none. the exams tho are too long.
Some of the students suggested multiple choice for the exams but i thought the way she had it was perfect. If people studied, the exam was easy to follow.
There are no changes i would want to make with this Professor. She is perfection at it's fullest.
No changes are needed.
N/A
nothing really, everything she did was good.
If she could speak up a little louder, and maybe not ask the class as many open-ended questions. "What do you think?" is sometimes very daunting to answer. Sometimes it's alright but most of us are shy.
i think she should allow more extra credit and change the test's to multiple choose.
None
I can't really think of anything I would want to change about the class.
More hands-on activities like the hula, bringing in guest speakers were good too
No changes needed.
I don't have any changes for Mrs. Yang
While the lecture-and-test method is straightforward and can get the job done, I'd like to see if she could create some other way of teaching the class. I really liked how she went out of the box in her teaching when she brought over guest speakers, played more music and video to illustrate what she teaches, etc. I wish she would've done more of that.
No changes
N/A :)
I think the only thing I would change about this class would be maybe doing more activities. I thought it would of been good to do more group activities and interact more with other students because by the end of the semester I didn't know half of the people in my class.
i think everything is perfectly fine the way it is, including the exams. There shouldn't be any multiple choice. It's better to let the students thing for themselves.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she asked if anyone needed help, or if questions were not clear to students.
She would frequently ask if there were any questions, she knew all the students names, knew the subject well, and made students feel comfortable in her class. and most of all she gave us opportunities to watch free events.
She encourages students to analyze subjects by themselves, and she asks questions in order to encourage students to reveal any doubts they might have.
She listened to students feedback about the first midterm, and agreed to put up class presentations and notes on laulima, which made it very easier and helpful to study for the other exams
She kept students aware of their grades and where they stand in the class in relation to the other students.
Always made sure we were participating. Encouraged comments and questions.
She helped us out alot by reviewing for the exams.
Giving students ample time and chances for feedback.
She addressed to the class about turning in the Chapter Notes on time, since there are students who haven't been doing that assignment. Plus this course requires to have 5 completed Chapter Notes turned in.
she concern to every studenrs and she want to know every students name.
She always asks if we have questions, and she takes the time to answer them in class if everyone seems to be having difficulty with the same thing. If students need more help with one area than another, she will modify her plans in order to allot more time for the area of difficulty. If we need to hear a music sample again in order to better understand a certain concept or to hear a certain sound that we might have initially missed, she gladly replays it because she knows that our learning is important to us. She is also more than willing to answer questions outside of class time. Although attendance counts for our grades, she understands that students may have days in which they are ill or in which they have emergencies (e.g. I had a family emergency this semester), and so she gives us 3 days in which we may be absent for these reasons if they should ever occur. As students (and quite frankly, as human beings), it makes us more comfortable knowing that we have the freedom to take a day or so to recover from the natural, and often times inevitable, stresses and obstacles of life. She understands that, although we are students working toward achieving a goal, we are not machines; she acknowledges that we are beings susceptible to things beyond our control. As adults trying to make it in this world, it is nice to know that teachers still remember what it is like to be a struggling student.
asked them questions
she understood that we have lives outside of school and was willing to work with you on things after class.
If a student didn't understand a certain part of what we were currently learning, she would go over it again and help them understand.
I guess my only response to this is making time out of her schedule to help students get the assignments finished when they needed to.
She was always encouraging students to ask the presenting student about their power point.
just talk to her to let her know whats going on and she will help you ina way where you can manage
She announced constant reminders of assignments that were due the next class and made sure everyone was keeping up.
She is very kind. Most teachers i come across are not nearly as kind as she is. She made sure that we understood the lesson plan and kept us up to date about the assignments and everything.
Helped me through the semester when I had hard times.
fairly.
Man Yang showed concern for students (us) by having surveys to find out what/how she could improve the class and she showed us our grades to let us know how we were doing in the class.
USE THE VEDIO
by giving us extra credit and time to do homework.
When I was supposed to give a presentation, my computer unexpected stopped working and I couldn't take it in do a slideshow. Ms. Yang emailed me back asking if I had a thumbnail and that she'd be willing to accommodate me on her computer. Sadly, I did not check my email in time. But she told me I could do extra credit so that was good.
she made sure she got to know each student and she always goes around asking how are we each class day.
She is flexible with deadlines and i feel like she wants everyone to succeed
She's always willing to help and encourages to ask for help when we need it as well as to speak up in class. She really wants us to do well and pass the class.
Always would let us know if we're missing anything and was lenient on due dates
She reminds student to do the reading, make reading notes, write event reports and other work.
If anyone had conflict with completing a homework assignment, missed a class, and/or needed help with a certain part of the slideshow she is more than willing to help us out.
She always sticks behind after the class finishes and encourages students to come up and ask any questions they may have on the lecture that day. I've taken advantage of that opportunity on several occasions, and I've always received good help whenever I did.
She always asked if we had questions, and encouraged us to share our thoughts on every lesson plan in class.
She always wants students to participate in in-class activities. She also offered extra credit opportunities.
Man Yang showed concern for students because she was always trying to help us understand what we were learning. When we were confused she always had an answer. She also gave us good review sheets before our exams which was very helpful in remembering the information.
always encourages us to participate.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
thank you for everything. keep up the good work.
Does a good job!
I have noted that she is always asking for students feedback. She always wants to make sure that students are learning. She is always eager to listen to students opinions in order to improve the effectiveness of her course.
Nothing else to say.
She is very positive and funny.
I realy enjoyed this course and learned quite a bit about music and cultures i havnt had a chance to learn much about. The Chinese section was especially interesting. Native american was also informative and i wish there had been more on it. More players the better as well that was by far the best part. African drumming was my favorit part of this class.
I wish there were more instructors like her.
She is an awesome teacher and individual!
no idea
She is doing a fantastic job! She seemed a bit shy at first, but that is probably very common for graduate students teaching a college course. As time went by, she seemed more comfortable teaching.
She was very nice.
great instructor, fun class to be in, would always have something new to show us to correlate or to bring the music of the chapter to life.
N/A
She is a good teacher and is easy to pass if you do all the homework that is required.

I enjoyed her class and she was a great instructor/teacher!
N/A
nothing, really, she is very good.
She's very young and pretty. I'm not used to young teachers, it's an interesting change of pace calling my teacher only by her first name.
shes smart and knows a lot about music and the culture
She's really quick with giving us back graded assignments and tests. Really open to ideas of what to do or change about the class. I really, really, really like her and her class!
If she taught another class, I'd probably take it too
Her class is really amazing, I get to learn different genres and different kinds of instruments.
She's a great teacher.
One of my favorite teachers and an all around great person.
She is very caring, chill, and fun.
I think she is a very good teacher and she seems like she has a lot of background information on this subject. She knew so much about each music culture.
Keep it up Ms. Man!
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
reviews were most helpful. and the teacher would go over subject very well.
She made it her rask to make sure we understood the subject very very well.
Learning about World Music is a wonderful way of learning about worlds cultures. Im very happy I took this class because there are many things I have learned about other cultures and about my own, that I would have not learned otherwise. It is amazing how much information instruments and music conveys.
The power presentations were crucial lifesavers to use to study for the exams.
Learning about Hawaiian music.
I likes that her lectures were very visual, lots of power points and videos. also hands on learning!
having the demonstrations in class from diffrent experts was very engaging and informative.
Class participation.
I found that the structure of her study guides are most valuable and helpful about the course because if you do it correctly and review it, you'll do good on the exam.
about the Hawaiian music, because i never had listen to hawaiian music, that's why.
She has expanded our thinking about music and its function in different cultures. She has made us more aware of the fact that everything is relative; different cultures view things differently. No one way of thinking is better than another, and music is seen very differently throughout the world. Our western culture has made us so close minded when it comes to music, and I am very glad that she had broadened my thinking and opened my mind to other perspectives. I feel more worldly simply because I took this course with Man Yang! Not only has she opened my mind to different views of music around the world, but she has also changed my way of thinking in general. I am no longer as narrow minded as I was at the beginning of the semester, and things that are foreign are no longer viewed as strange... they are simply different. I have learned to accept that the standards by which I was raised are not the "norm" for everyone, and that basically everything is relative. Culture plays a huge role in how we view the world and how we interact with others, and it was nice to learn about other cultures and what the world might look like through their eyes. I especially appreciated that I was able to learn all of this through music!
the resources available
all of the listening samples of music were extremely helpful.
Notes are on laulima and we are also given study guides. We also have reviews for our exams the week before.
By completing this course, I am one step closing to entering the Nursing Program. Also, it allows me to categorize or explain different types of music that I hear on the radio.
That the every power point we went through in class was put up on Laulima.
the music samples that she played
I really liked the visuals in class; the power points were REALLY great because they were simple and easy to understand. Also, I liked the music samples provided before the class even starts and the samples played for every section. It's fun to listen to them. I sometimes write the songs down so I can listen to them later. (:
I really learned a lot about different types of music form different cultures around the world.
I learned. And I enjoyed learning.
Learning about different types of cultural music and making new friends.
YES,i learn a lot of the world music .
dont know
I like learning about the musical terms, and different instruments and music from other cultures. I suppose what was most helpful was seeing slides of the instruments, and knowing what to listen for..
i learned to appreciate the different cultures and their music
The lecture, power points and class discussions were very useful.
New ability to understand the structure of music
Learning about music in other cultures. I got a new perspective of music and got to understand it a bit more. It helped me appreciate music a lot more than I already had.
Going to class helped a lot, good lectures
I would say that her presentation with the subjects we covered throughout the semester makes it very interesting and easy to follow.
I took band in high school and I took this class thinking it was just a straight music class. I was a little dissapointed knowing it was a music "history" class, but Beryl taught us about the different cultures and the sound of the music in them.
Being able to define and differentiate between different genres and styles of music. Also, being exposed to all sorts of different sounds and what people could call "noise" and see the aesthetics behind it all.
She always posted her notes up on Laulima incase we missed a section or part of her notes. That was very helpful.
Learning about music from other world cultures.
I thought learning about different styles of music around the world was very helpful. I think it is valuable to know not only about your culture, but the cultures around you. This course provided me with information about music that I would of never known about before. From learning their music, I was able to understand a culture better in terms of religion, community, entertainment, values, etc.
The study guides for the exam was so helpful! If it wasn't for the study guide, I wouldn't know where to begin studying. Thank you for that!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She was so kind and passionate for teaching. I really enjoyed the piano class. I am happy to be one of her class's student.
Knows the subject. Very talented. She provided a lot of feedback.
She is a very good piano player, and she is very nice
She is very encouraging and helpful. No matter how much help we may need she is always willing to help each student with their weaknesses.
she is very kind and friendly, and she listened our saying carefully. and she tried to make this class funny, so i can enjoy the class.
Right now, her biggest strength is knowing how much she knows the subject. A lot of teachers would teach a subject, not knowing a lot of it. Or sometimes a teacher would making contradictions while teach. She knew what she was doing and was very clear, and didnt' contradict.
She is very skilled in what she is teaching and she tries really hard to make sure that all her students understand the material and are keeping up with the course.
She knows the content very well and she is very good at explaining the music simply and gives good feedback when playing a piece.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none.
Syllabus needs some work. When I first saw it on the first day of school I was very confused.
no changes, the class was fine
sometimes, there was some student who interupt out class, she responded kindly. i think she have to be more strict.
I would say be more aware of what students are doing in class. I notice that students would do something else while she's teacher. So my only concern would be to be more aware about the surroundings.
She should use a baton for teaching students how to conduct properly. Maybe she should get students to use some type of stick like a pen to teach students how to conduct.
I suggest that it'd be good to give more instruction on the color map at first. I wasn't sure how to do the first one so when it got to the second one I could do a lot better.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she always encouraged me to play a piano and ask me everything is alright or do you have any problem in your piece.
Participation is the key to this class. Provided feedback and encouraged us to learn on our own.
by asking how we were doing, and helping us if we had trouble
She went around the class and assisted every student.
She showed concern in her own way. I can't put it detail, but she did.
She always dedicated time during class to provide individual attention to each student to make sure everyone understands the course material.
She showed concern for students by going to each of us individually and working with us on the pieces that we had to play. It really helped to get feedback on the pieces that I played for in class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes of course, if a student is beginner I wanna recommend her class because she will teach simple and basic contens that you should know to play a piano and read notes.
Yes. She is very helpful and knowledgeable. Very fair on test grades.
yes, she is a very skilled piano player, a good teacher, and she is nice
Yes I would recommend to other studens
yes, because of a very good teacher! and I think she is the best teacher for a beginner, too. the beginner can understand and improve their skill easily.
Yes, I wouldn't mind recommending her to students.
of course yes! because, she makes students feel comfortable, and she teach us very well.
I would recommend her to students because she is a very kind teacher so beginning piano students don't feel so intimidated. She is also a very informative teacher that makes learning the subject easy to understand.
Yes, I would recommend this teacher to other students because she is very nice and encouraging to her students and really helps out with getting through the pieces.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you and happy new year~!! haha
I enjoyed her class she made me want to come to class everyday. she is very sweet and nice to everyone.
I think I would say that she is doing a good job so far being a piano teacher.
you are a good teacher! i am so happy to meet you.
I would just like to say that she is an excellent teacher who really cares about her students. She really shows how honored and happy she is when she sees how well her students have progressed throughout the semester.
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I learned basic piano terms and cords
learning how to play piano, ive always anted to learn, and now I have and I will continue next semester.
Most valuable is to practice and practice in order to get better
What helped me the mst was that Ms. Yang helped us at our own pace. That's important. Teachers have to be able to communicate with their students. If there's no communication, the student is bound to fail in the course.
The individual attention to students during class and the free write assignments that have students write down how they feel throughout the course.
You get to learn the basics about the piano and get to learn the chords for the piano.
19. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
kind, passionate, positive
Nice Knowledgeable Talented
encouraging, nice, sweet
friendly, good
very detailed.
great
