13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

She is very knowledgable in the subject area. She also provides thorough information for the students. She is very understanding and receptive. Music World Culture She is very knowledgeable about on the subject. She seems like she enjoys the subject and is passionate about it. Ms Yang is very energetic and quite passionate about her subject/students. Allows the students freedom to voice their opinion with a positive, non-condescending atmosphere. Presented material clearly which made learning the subject matter interesting, factual and surprisingly fun. Had the course grading/policies clearly stated in the syllabus and was right on schedule. Found it attractive that Ms Yang is a student herself and closely relates being a student and reminds about deadlines, the breakdown of grades and to not loose focus. Wonderful teacher. Debating about switching to a Music Major. Mahalo Her ablity to bring the students attenetion towards the boards,how you ask is by having short clip and real music from the places we learned. Her major strength is getting everyone to participate in class so no can ever fall asleep and keeps you learning the lesson. she obviously knew what she was talking about when she was teaching and she tryed to work with an early morning class that consisted of people who werent all that interested in talking. she always seemed up beat and never really discouraged. She informs students with assignments when the assignment is close to the deadline. She encourages every student to participate in class. I love her personality. That she was organized. As a teacher, Mrs. Man Yang's strength is knowing the subject well. She is very active and she tries to get all the students involve in all activities. She is a very outgoing teacher that encourages people to get to know each other in the classroom. She shows concern for her students by helping them do whatever is possible to gain extra points as well as give advice on where to go for certin assignments. She is very humor person and her lecture is do organized, so it is easy to understand the contents knows what shes talking about. Just her attitude and the way she always tried her best to get us to participate, even though no one wanted to. I think she did great as a teacher. She always encourages us to participate in activities in class and is always prepared during her lectures. She tries to get everyone to get involved in our class discussions she explained well all contents to students. Ms. Yang has a positive energy and isn't overly critical of her students. She is patient and easy-going. She really knew each cultures musical area well! Very friendly and interactive. She is always to get the students to participate. Well educated. Teaches well for a young instructor. She clear on speaking of her topic as a teacher and also strength on each topic she talk about Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was that she created a fun learning experience that made me want to learn more. She knew a lot on the subject at hand which made it easier for the class to learn. Has a great understanding for the subject matter Eager to teach Ms. Man Yang's major strengths as a teacher is she can motivates and engage her students and she's also a excellent communicator. Everything. Loved the class! She truly encouraged the students to think for themselves and discuss certain topics among their peers. Although the students in the class were not too willing to participate, she never gave up and truly made the class a fun environment to learn. Man Yang knew her material well and always came to class eager to teach her students .

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

There's no need for change. She's a great professor! None None Although we did follow the timeline, I really feel the class could be a little bit more organized. On the first day of instruction, we had our first homework assignment but she didn't really go over how to do it and didn't really announce that it was due before the next class. The only reason that I knew about it, was that I am the type of student that immediately writes down everything from each class's syllabus/time line in my planner. Had I not did that immediately, I would not have done the homework. I feel like she could have given a courteous" hey class, just reminding you to look at your time line and that your first assignment is due before next class." Also, there was not a lot of instruction on how to do the assignment itself. Although it was only notes and it was only worth 1 point -- it would be nice to have a guideline on how to do it. The only instruction we really got about it throughout the semester, was that we have to highlight interesting facts and questions about the text. There is not guideline as far as minimum pages or words to write, what kind of questions to write, what kind of interesting facts to write... etc. We didn't really follow the book anyway -- all the notes that we used on the exam were given to us in powerpoint. The book is very, very expensive. It's over $100. If we are expect to have this book in our possession, I'd really have appreciated it more utilized in the class itself. I honestly feel like I wasted a lot of money on a book I didn't need and as a student that struggles financially, it really affects me. If I had known in the beginning that most of the material will be given to us in class, I would not have wasted my money on buying it. I also really hated that our grade is basically based on a 100 point scale. That means that every point we get is 1% of our grade. I'm not sure if this is a common system, as it is possible that that classes that I have taken just so happened to all have a different type of grading system, but personally it was scale I really disliked. I am confident I will get a good grade, but it doesn't mean that I didn't have anxiety about it all semester, just because everything we did was obviously heavily weighed in our final grade. I appreciated the extra credit assignments, though. Bring more instruments to show to the class. having people with disablities to take their test fairly by not having weird exams that doesnt make sence, I do not think she needs any changes. dont require a book if your only going to assign notes for it that never really apply to class. its a waste of 100 dollars. try to use more than just powerpoints to give lessons. find some other ways to teach about some sections and try to make it a bit more interactive. I think she did a really great job at her teachings. For updating grades, she should put in the current grade so that the students can see what grade we are getting in her class. One of my suggestion is having a group project, that way students have a way to get to know each other. N/A Go through topics slower. None Let us know when the due dates are. I didn't know until a while that we were supposed to submit our work before class starts. Everything was good. If she would like to be a bit more commanding as a teacher, that could be good. I like the relaxed atmosphere but sometimes students were just being lazy and she could have pushed them to try a bit harder. But generally, I like the way she teaches. None! Dont make the students interact with each other so much. More so with her. I don't have any changes to suggest. more time showing the powerpoints I don't have any suggest to her because she's a great teacher Expansion on more musics Maybe by taking in the atmosphere of the class she can conclude that the class is not willing to participate, and strictly resort to a lecture.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She would always ask students if we had any questions. She would also take the time to explain things if students did not understand something that is being covered in the lesson. She understand and helps out , if there are areas that we don't understand. She talks to each of us privately she'd always ask us if we had questions and answered any if we had them. Ms Yang showed concern for students by reminding of the musical performances allowing us to attend at our convenience. Also offered a discounted price of admission to some great shows. Ms Yang always asked during lecture if the material is presented to fast or any questions. having outside learning She told us when assignments were due. you could tell by the way that she helped students that talked to her. By encouraging students to come to class, participate, and do their homework so they can pass. She asked us a lot if we have any questions and that she said that she can help us. She shows concern by making sure that each students are right on track. She constantly remind her students about the homework that is due. She is also willing to go out there and provide important informations. Proffersor Yang showed concern formthe students by taking time after class to help people who are falling behind or to discuss an assingment. asked many times if there was any questions By always helping us and showing that if we had questions to ask her! Before or after class she would go to us or ask us to speak to her after class she beforehand noticed to students to do not missing any assignments She listens very well to students' opinions and gives deadline reminders often. Constantly keeping us aware of assingments due. Email students and write things on the whiteboard of important things She showed concern for students by continuously pushing us in the class enforcing class participation which made each and every one of us have to learn and stay in tune to the subject. study sessions in class By being honest to her students and being consistent with her students. she's there when you need help. She always emailed you if you emailed her first She gave us ample opportunity for extra credit, always informed us of when assignments were due way in advance and reminded us along the way, went over our grades and how to calculate them. Yes definitely, she always asked how the class was and encouraged student participation.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. Her class is a great experience. It is very informative and it helps you to build up confidence with the presentation that everyone will have to do and as well as when she asks questions to random students about the lecture. She is a great professor and understands the needs of her students. I would definitely recommend Miss Yang to students because I learned a lot from her class and I was encouraged to participate in class. yes It would honestly depend on the student. I would not suggest her in general, but to specific types of students ( studious, mature, serious, music/culture appreciating students...) I would definitely suggest her as they would learn a lot in this course and would appreciate how knowledgeable she is. I also feel like in our particular class, as a class as a whole, we lacked a certain level of maturity. I feel like that kind of moved the general attitude of our entire class into a more negative direction. I don't think this was Ms. Yang's fault. The attitude of my peers affected me also, as I was distracted by how disrespectful some students were to different cultures. I am not sure if Ms. Yang has noticed this, but I don't think that this affected HER attitude, which I appreciated very much. Learning a new culture requires a bit of maturity, as we are learning about something that is completely foreign to us. I didn't like how the class would laugh at something that was not meant to be funny, just because it was foreign. Again, this is not something that is Ms. Yangs fault, but this is why I would not suggest her as their instructor to everyone, just because I strongly believe this course should not be taken by just anyone. Yes. i would give her a neutral, but she is still young so she has alot of expericence as well. Yes i would recommend her to other student, she is fun and easy to learn from. i would recommend her to people who could understand her. sometimes she is a little hard to understand because of her accent and some people really have a hard time with anything but perfect English. other than that she is a fine teacher that still has a little bit more to learn about teaching. Yes, she is a great teacher :) Yes, because she is a good teacher. I would recommend Man Yang to students, especially when they want to lean about music. Her class is actually fun because you get to do inside and outside activities. Yes because she is very enthusiastic and encourages student to be friends. Yes, because her class is so fun and well organized yes its a fun class thats not too stressful Yes I would because shes sweet, fun, and makes everything easy to understand Yes, she makes the class fun yes....of course..she is a good teacher. Yes. Because the class is pleasant and easy. Yes! I Surely will! Yes. i learned much from the class. Yes I would because she was well organized in her teachings and made it a great learning environment. Yes Yes, I would recommend Ms. Man yang to other students because she has a great relationship with all her student such as helping us and treated us fairly. Yes I would, She is one of the greatest professors I ever had in college and at KCC. I would recommend her to those students who are actually willing to participate in class. Yes, because she is knowledgeable in her material and cares for her students learning.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

We need more music professors, or professors in general, like her! She is always in time , read to help students and always come to class with a nice smile. Awsome It is hard to make suggestion on how to teach this class because of the material that is covered, but I really find powerpoints in general are boring so if there was another way to get us to learn the material besides powerpoints, I think that would be good. I'm not saying that EVERY class was powerpoints, there was just a lot of them. I just wish there was less. Well cultured. Passionate about her subject. very smart. she is a great person and really cares about what shes teaching. When explaining things she should explain them better. Mrs. Beryl is a great teacher. She really knows the subject that she is teaching. She also have a lot of personal experience based on the topic that she talks about. She have a great sense of humor. She should teach teach. ore classes. She is so helpful. She returns email as soon as possible shes nice and shes young like us so its easy to learn from here Thanks so much for this semester it was great and I learned a lot! All I can say to Ms. Man Yang is she's a great teacher I appreciate what she's done to us. I really really enjoyed how the class was organized. The powerpoints were effective and to the point. There were no lectures that I thought were boring or meaningless. She really taught me a lot and I am thankful.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

The presentation that everyone has to do provides an opportunity to build up self confidence. Also the questions that the professor asks also provides the same opportunity. The music cds are very valuable and helpful plus the extra music she emails us to learn more and appreciate the topic for that weekk. Yang focuses on each of us. She gives a lot of insight about what we cover in class. It is always a good thing when the instructor obviously cares about the subject he/she is teaching and that was very obvious in Ms. Yang. I probably won't remember everything we covered for the rest of my life, but I will most likely always remember certain things about diffferent cultures and their music for the rest of my life. The culture presented in each presentation by Ms Yang and each student about their Music presentation. learning that not every teacher will actually give you their full attention and "college" is "college". Reality will set in real fast. The music analysis is very helpful. learning how to analyze music is probably one of the most helpful things that she had taught us, its something that ill use through out my entire career. Learning about other cultures and understanding their kind of music. I found out about the music is the different cultures, like the instruments and I know what different textures, organolgy, pitch, rhythm and form there is. The most valuable and helpful about the course is having knowledge on the history of music and the type of music in different countries. The ability to analyze music and appriciate different music of other cultures. Exams are not that hard learning music from my own culture. Just learning how to appreciate music in a deeper way and learning all types of different wats people use music in Learning how to describe music, it makes remembering term for a certain music easier. I knew a lot of information through this course. That you learn to appreciate each cultures music :) Worldy Knowledge. I found reading the book and writing notes helps me on this course What I found the most valuable and helpful about the course was keeping an open mind about different cultures and try something new. the power points I find this course very interesting and I learned different kind of music in the world. Just the fun environment She gave us a chance to express our musical individuality, which I really appreciate. I always felt included in the lectures, and felt that she was genuinely interested in what we thought of the music we were listening to. I'm sorry that the class was not more willing to participate. How to analyze music is something I learned how to so specifically in the class. I now listen to music and am able to recognize various characteristics of a specific song . Also through exploring different types of music in other parts of the world I am more appreciative of other types of music .

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

She tries to have a sense of humor, and tries to teach the piano class in a authoritive and in a curriculum set class atmosphere. She has good communication skills, personable but professional. She makes sure the students understand her and provides a comfortable work environment where lectures are very open for better perspective. The entire curriculum is well organized and goal oriented. Her major strengths are having patience, constant encouragement, being a positive influence, answering questions with insight, having knowledge that is pertinent, very punctual, and always willing to help her students. she always teach me piano easily. And if I cant do it or understand it, she try to understand me well. She is very open and willing to dedicate extra time to all of her students. She is the only teacher I have had this semester who I could tell really wanted her students to do well and succeed. She makes sure that everyone is on the same page, doesn't teach new material too soon or too late.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

I wish she could give me more personal instruction and have a longer class. none I recommend giving more homework like memorizations of half page pieces or maybe even short 5 question quizzes at the beginning of class. Yes it is more work but I think it would greatly increase learning capacity and confidence. Her class is so best The only problem I ever had during class is when we would get time to practice and she would call each student up idividually to play on the big piano. The big piano is very loud and it's hard to hear yourself play even with the headphones on. I would have appreciated it if that were something we did when we first got to class. Gotten our critiques then had practice after or even lobby for a bigger classroom. I know we all need practice on the big piano so it's difficult to think of a real solution but that classroom is so tiny it's easy to get drowned out. Outside of class, I had a problem trying to get my portfolio together (I have never done a portfoolio before). Maybe just a more specific outline or examples of past portfolios. n/a.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She tried to find out, why certain students would be absent on days. Very attentive She was able to make time outside of class to meet up and she would also dedicate time during class to help others that requested or that she felt it was necessary. She was also lenient when it came to deadlines and was able to accommodate for unusual circumstances. She would reach out to us and offer us as many opportunities as possible. A lot of teachers have to be hunted down for help, where as she would take immediate action and be ready with a helping hand. She made sure we all had individual time with her to practice and helped us on our pieces.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

I would recommend her to other students if they have some prior piano knowledge, the class can get advanced and you need a lot of practice outside of class. Yes Good teacher, fun class, feels like time well spent. Yes because I believe anyone would love to learn piano under her guidance. She's very supportive and she's willing to offer more time than the class is scheduled for. Yes, she is so kind. She can teach piano kindly so you dont need to worry about piano's ability I would definitely and already have recommended her as a teacher. She is a great teacher. She is also a professional that loves what she does, what she is teaching, and she wants to see other people fall in love with it to. A LOT of hard work goes into her course but nothing about her class waas hard as long as you put forth the effort to practice. Yes. She can teach thoroughly and makes sure that the whole class can play.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

I believe Man Yang loves the piano. I wish she would share more of that knowledge with me in the classroom with more instruction on the songs, repretoirs. Sheʻs great! Young but well educated, open-minded and clearly passionate about music and teaching. I plan to take her music in world cultures class. She's just super cool and I than her for inspiring and encouraging me. Her teaching style is easy to follow, her methods are effective, and her personality is spot on to deal with any kind of student. I respect her for being so patient and wiling to help us. I'd take more classes from her!

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

Learning to read musical notes and songs. Piano helps me with music theory, and I like to play. She covered both and made it clear with any questions answered. Everything. Also that piano is in my opinion a huge adrenaline rush to play in front of everyone. My first recital left me with an unbelievable feeling of accomplishment. I could understand a little music theory as piano class. Piano is so good instrument. And then I was happy to play piano. The avalability of the pianos. There were pianos outside, in private rooms, and even in her office. A lot of our coursework deended on us practicing on our own. Everything.

young, passionate about piano, and conservative. observant passionate kind Empathetic, Enlightening, and Professional. Good The perfect teacher. Sweet, caring, patient.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

She is very friendly for all students, therefore the class was very lively. She is enthusiastic, passionate about the subject, and makes the information interesting. As a teacher, you are well prepared, organized, fun, energetic, and really know your subject. She is very patient, and explains the content of her lectures thoroughly. Mrs. Yang is always prepared for her lectures and she keeps the content well organized. She is passionate about what she teaches. Very fluent in the subject!!! Very easy going easy to talk to, and very patient. My music 107 teacher Man Yang is sweetheart. She concerns about students in every single class. First time when I attend the class, I surprised how she is a young teacher, then I was a little bit worried how it will be. However, I really impressed how she put effort into her lecture for class and I think every MUSIC 107 students felt her efforts during her lecture. For example, she has never stopped smiling during class, She always responds message, I can always check my grade the day I submitted assignment or took test. She also listen student carefully. If someone ask question about our study, in the next lecture, she prepare detail answer for everyone. I feel much more close to her than other professors. I used to believe that teacher/professor who are just teaching their study field because of their job, or some teachers are even no passion for their job like their obligation. I felt different to Mis Yang who is always trying to be improve herself such as communication with students and quality of her lecture. She also focus on how to enjoy music. In our class, we danced Hula with special Hula guest dancer. The other day, we sung and danced Indonesian traditional song with special guest from Indonesia who performed in 24th KCC International festival. I had been not interested in the event (KCC International festival), but since I attended the lecture, I changed my mind and visit the event for few times. It was very interesting experience for me, and now I am thank for Mis Yang because she gave me my motivation. She may young teacher and need more experience for some field, but I really proud of her who takes her job serious and has passion for it. I am glad to take her class this semester and if I have chance I would like to take her class again. She's really understanding and takes genuine interest in her students' learning and in what they have to bring to the table as well.She's much better than the previous Mus 107 professor at KCC in my opinion. Beryl is really nice and helpful. Her strengths as a teacher are she is very involved with class participation, good listener, and well open-minded teacher. She knows the area of study that she is teaching and all her points are very clear. I like how she teaches. She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable of the subject. She is very fair in grading and tries her best to relate the subject matter to the students on a level easy to grasp. She always have possible feedback whenever we give her answer even though it was right or wrong. I enjoyed her lectures. I was able to keep up and follow all the power points without difficulty. Since this was an ethnomusicology class, she played music and us as the students would talk about the song and what we knew about it. Shed bring exotic instruments and guests to teach us these songs and it's culture. Her ability to engage her students and the way she is able to elaborate on the topic with her vast amount of knowledge. She is very friendly and able to relate to many of her students. The class is very organized and she is always able to give our test backs the next class. She provides students with every opportunity to become successful in her class. She knows her material and she cares about her students. Her major strengths are that she knows this field of music, she encourages everyone to participate, and her teaching skills are excellent. She knows her material very well and is always very understanding and cheerful. The ability to make students laugh, have a good time learning. I really respect that she stepped out of her comfort zone and decided to teach in the US. Even though english is not her first language, she spoke very well and clear. Easy to understand.Recommended to anyone who enjoys the music of the world. She is able to relate well with her students and always makes sure that everyone understands new ideas, words and concepts before moving on. Subject. She knew her subject, and you could tell that she loved teaching about it. She is a great teacher! Her enthusiasm for the subject and her sense of humor make the class interesting to learn and be in. Several qualities that demonstrate her excellence of being a teacher are, enthusiastic character, informative content, and her passion in ethnomusicology. She is kind and patient, and her lectures and presentations in class are interesting. The videos and course materials were entertaining and made me interested in the subject. Very prompt in returning assingments and tests and readily available to students (answers emails very quickly). She's a very nice and fair teacher. Knows a lot about this particular subject being taught. Very knowledgeable and trustworthy teacher. Professor Yang is very patient with students and is passionate about the subject. She knows how to grade each assignment and tests very fairly for each students. She knows what she doing and talking about and she tries her best to remind us what's coming up.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Nothing Perhaps try and invite more people into the class to show their style of music, it was really fascinating and it would have been great to have one person for each unit we covered in class. I really dislike the book. It's boring, long, and not appealing. Through out your class I have been using your powerpoint and my notes taking in your class. The power point and have helped me a lot to study for your test, and not really reading or referring to the book. As for my preference I prefer multiple choice for test. Dont stop being awesome. No changes necessary. Perhaps offer the powerpoint slides on laulima. I understand the emphasis on writing notes for ourselves and how that supposedly helps with memory retainment. However, sometimes it's hard to write everything down. It would be great if she incorporated more guess speakers in the class. None None. No changes I believe that everything is well organized and should be kept the way it is. None There is no need for any changes. I really like her style and wouldn't change anything. Just bring in more artists so they can demonstrate their music in a more hands-on type of way. Listening to different music was interesting but bringing in artists would just take it to the next level. Also making instruments would be fun as well. No changes because she already has the material down and her teaching techniques are the best. none, she was great! I think that posting notes online for us to review would be very helpful. It would help us focus on the lecture more instead of diverting our attention towards copying notes. No changes except improving her awesomeness. I loved her attitude and teaching style. Though as a suggestion, perhaps she can post her PowerPoints online so that for those who missed a class can take down notes that they've missed that day. But other than that, no changes at all. Nothing much. Place more emphasis (points) on class participation in order to get more response from students. While not the best method it is still effective. Nothing.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She remembered all name of the classmates. She reminded us of deadlines, made sure the class understood the information, and encouraged questions. Thank you so much for being available in your office and through e-mail. And always helping us stay on track and care for your students to strive for the hightest. When she saw that we did not understand what was being taught, she taught it from a different angle. She took time to explain her lectures to individuals. When students had something to share, she listened intently with good eye contact. She was always available even if she was a student herself. She was able to learn from us and took into accountability everyone's own opinion about anything we were discussing. She brought a lot of music festival or concert informations. She emails students and writes notes on the things that they submit. She hears students opinion then gives feedback. She is always doing her best to get every single student engaged in class discussion. She always makes sure that every student understands the material thoroughly and completely. She are fairly when concern for students. Everyone could get help from her and she is friendly to help them. She would call on students for their opinion and was interested in what everyone would say. She always was able to email the students on up coming events they could use for their event report essays and would remind people if there were scheduled to present next class. She was available to help students whenever necessary, and also gave good feedback on how we were doing in class and on exams. She encourages students to participate in class discussions. She groups the students to discuss and asks us individually a question, so students would just answer a question she would ask us. She also gives feedback on work that we do (ex. powerpoints, etc.) She let me opt out of watching an Indian Movie because I didn't feel comfortable watching belly dancing. She always asks if we understand the material and we have dicussions frequently. She makes sure to make each lesson enjoyable while still teaching us all that we need to know for the tests. Also as I have said she makes sure we understand everything before going on. She learned every students name after the first week of school. AMAZING, not a lot of teachers put that much effort into doing that! Yes. Whenever I emailed her, she was sure to help me out She answers questions when we have them. She's also personable and considerate towards her students. If necessary, she provided students with advising of any questions or concerns in her office. She gave all her students a syllabus and sent out email reminders as well as reminders in class on upcoming events or assignments. She would also ask students if they had questions at the end of her lectures. We could email or ask her any questions we had, and also asked during class sometimes if everyone understood what was being taught. She answered all student questions and never talked down to them. She taught us how we should write our paper properly in our own words, she created a jeopardy game for our midterm and final test to make us remember what we have learned.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, because the knowledge is very useful. Yes, I would. She makes class interesting and fun. Class isn't too hard because she explains exactly what you need to do and it's not overwhelming- it's the perfect level of challenge and ease mixed into one. It's not an easy class, you have to know what you're doing and you have to know the material- but that's why it's great, because she makes learning fun in a sense. yes I would recommend, she very fun and energetic. You'll learn a lot like have. Yes, I already have. A teacher that genuinly cares about her students and is passionate about what she teaches. I love the fact that she was very passionate about what she was teaching and was always available for Q & A's. yes, because i like how she's not always so serious and makes the class fun. but at the same time, we learn a lot. :) Yes, definitely. If anybody wants to take Mus 107, they should take it from her and not from anybody else. Other professors are either not as easy to approach or are harder to understand. Yes, she is a very great teacher, easy to understand and she knows her field of study. Yes. Yes, she is a fun, caring and well prepared teacher. Yes, I will since she is very good teacher, I mean she is easy going Yes I would! She is so fun to listen to and I learned so much. She has a sense of humor but never goes off topic. Yes I would very much so recommend her to other students because not only is she a great teacher but one of the few who really care and is able to teach a subject without getting bored. She's so cute and she makes the subjects interesting by bringing in actual examples such as instruments and speakers to help better understand the topic! Yes, because I learned a lot from her and I know that they would enjoy having her as a teacher too! Yes, she has passion for her subject and presents it appealingly. Her grading is fair. Most definitely, her persona is very fitting to encourage students in attending class without getting too bored or uninterested. Yes, I would most definitely recommend her to students because she makes the subject interesting, intergrating many aspects such as history of a culture in addition to their music. An understanding teacher, she gives a thorough and fun review before each midterm. Yes. A very nice knowledgeable teacher and grades fair. Yes. Her knowledge of and passion for ethnomusicology show in her teaching. She is capable, clear, and comfortable to be around. Yes because she is funny and very nice. She is a very fair grader.

Thank you, I had a good time. She is a fantastic teacher and I love the enthusiasm she brings to the classroom. I really enjoy your class and thank you for expanding my horizon to different music and cultures. I like her sense of humor. Thank you very much for overriding administration to allow me the privilege to have taken your class. Thank you, thank you!!! She's one of the best professors I've ever had. I respect her, for teaching in and being well adversed in the english language. And she is pretty as well. She's great at what she does. That I am glad that I took this class because I was able to get so much out of it. This class was a lot of fun and she should continue to teach this subject. Even though she's the teacher and we're the students, she shows us respect too. She is beautiful inside and out and has a heart for Music and her students. Thank you for being a great teacher! Other teachers don't even begin to compare with her because she is just that good. GIVE MORE EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES PLEASE!! I loved her class and know that it was a good discision to take it She is a wonderful professor to take if interested in exploring the numerous aesthetics in music, worldwide. 18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

I learned culture, geography, and history through music. I actually learned a lot about other cultures music, much more than I thought I would learn in this class. And I love that I can actually apply this stuff in every day life. The material has already come in handy in unrelated school situations. Learned a lot about different culture, respect to one another, learning to love different taste of music. This class expaned my horizon of world music. I was exposed to differnt ethnic music that I found was enjoyable. It helped me find an appreciation for ethnic music and its unique qualities. It made me more aware of the similarities that world music share throughout multiple cultures. Yes, I recommend to take her class. You will change your image of professor. The emphasis on having an open mind. The slides and presentations. Man Yang is not afraid to admit she does not know an answer. She is humble and respective of the student's. I have gain lots of information from the world music. Each religion has their old unique musical traditional which greatly represented their nation. I learned how music really expresses the culture it comes from. I've now developed that ear to distinguish which music comes from which culture, the instruments used, and the proper names for each group of instruments. I found the the study guides very helpful for the test as well as the study session we had in class. They both really prepared you well for the test and so there wont be surprises on the test like how some other teachers do. I got to learn about other cultures and how music is valuable everywhere you go. I like the study guide she gives us for each exam, and when we have a class study session. I found most valuable that when I applied myself to studying I succeeded in learning things I thought I would never be able to understand. Learning to appreciate the different types of music genres, even if some arent pleasing to listen to at all. I got out of it exactly what I was expecting of the course and more. Music is not just enjoyable beats and melodies. There is more to music and lyrics than just good metaphors and enjoyable tempos. I learned things I never knew about music around the world I enjoy and appreciate the exposure to music from many different ones, especially since all of the music traditions we covered are non-Western. It helped me gain a better perspective on music. It helped me to understand the implications of how world music played in a role in religion and society, in the past and presently. It also got me to comprehend how each culture's ideas of what music is, what its powers are, how it relates to other aspects of life, and how it reflects important things about its people and their view of the world. Overall, this course has impacted my view in music positively. The concept of no music being better than the other and the exposure to such a wide variety of music and cultures. Knowing more about the music and instruments in different cultures was interesting and it might be helpful fo rme since im planning to be a music major. The variety of listening samples and guest musicians. The history of some continents and country.

The arguments the publishers use to justify the high costs of textbooks do not hold against critical scrutiny. I would rather professors assign more affordable material (internet articles and books, standard books, their own books, etc.) As this is unlikely to change, I nonetheless appreciate that professor Yang required the condensed (and thus cheaper) version of the required textbook.

She is funny and knows alot of interesting things about world music. She encourages everyone to participate. She is very well prepared every class and also organized. Ms Yang was very organized and it was really easy to follow her lectures. She is personable yet professional. Great instructor! Man Yang has a strength and love for teaching music. She was very helpful with any questions I had. she knew the the content well I could see she wants to teach us. Good teacher. She makes her best for students to participate and make her lectures more dynamic. She always asks for students feedback in order to make sure that students are understanding the lecture, and she is always attentive to any doubts students may have. She always arrives to class with a lot of energy and a positive attitude, which makes the class much more fun and dynamic. she has made this class a fun learning experience. she knows a lot of music culture and very kind She provides helpful study guides and is clear about what's going to be on the exams. Man Yang's strengths as a teacher are describing different types of music and giving the students great information on all types of music that she teaches. Very enthusiastic, kind, approachable, and knowledgable about world music and fun in class. Comes up with interesting activities to help the students better learn different types of music. Uses her resources and friends in her major to bring us into the field of ethnomusicology, for example she brought in friends that either studied or knew a specific kind of music to present and elaborate to the class that we had to study. she understands and knows her subject extremely well. she would encourage and make students interact in class. The class was always reluctent to disscuss but she was patient with them while still trying diffrent techniques to get every one involved. She made everything easy for us to understand and made clear that she knew what she was talking about through experience. She is very knowledgeable of her field. Because she knows so much, she has a lot to share with students. She tries to explain things in terms that we would understand, and she gives lots of audio and video samples which are very helpful for understanding many of the concepts in a world music course. She encourages us to think for ourselves, but she still knows the areas in which we need more guidance. She gets us thinking outside of the box, outside of our comfort zone. Although she initially assists us in trying to understand what is going on with the many complicated areas of music, she slowly but surely releases the "training wheels" to the point where we are able to do understand it on our own. Getting the whole class involved in whatever we do. Her honesty and passion to teach. she knows what she's talking about. Very knowledgeable with the areas that we covered, really good motivator too teach the music always showing concern for the student and understanding their needs in order to learn. She is very helpful and flexible. She's really friendly and always willing to help. Really easy to talk to and easy to understand what we are talking about in class. She knows a lot about music. Knew the subject very well I think Man Yang's strengths as a teacher was how passionate she was about this subject. She was very friendly was welcoming and that created a good learning environment. I wasn't afraid to ask questions because I knew she would be helpful and try her best with giving me an answer. Ability to present and teach content clearly she is well prepared. she motivates her students to participate. she knows what she is teaching and makes it fun for the class to learn. Professor Yang's greatest strength as a teacher is that she does just that. She teaches us. She is very compassionate about her students and is very obvious that she cares about us just by how she teaches. She knows what she is teaching very well. She knows how to handle the class in a very good manner. I love her. Sheʻs a great teacher! :) Man Yang's major strength as a teacher is knowing the subject well enough so that she could help us relate it to things we knew or how to remember them well enough for tests She was very organized and clear throughout every section. She had her resources up on time. The work was simple for everyone to understand. She provides the material work by Power Point. Her way of teaching World music is having the class listen to music samples and watch video performances. She knew her subject well and taught her lessons the same each day, which was good organization. She always got the class to participate and asked for suggestions on how to make our learning experience better. She stuck by the syllabus and if she changed it, she gave ample time for rescheduling. She was always available to us after class. very good teacher. She knows her subject very well and always tries to get participation from the class. Professor Man Yangs strengths as a teacher was that she never really talked down to us as a class which therefor made me that much more comfortable in class to ask questions and such and also made me respect her that much more. She always showed concern for our learning after all her powerpoint notes slides, in case we had questions or thoughts on the subject. She is one of my favorite teachers and I would love to take a class instructed by her again. She is very well prepared and thorough in the subject she teaches. She's very encouraging of students to form opinions of the music that's listened to in class. You can tell she wants her students to do the best they can and she gives lots of opportunities to do so. She knows the subject she's talking about, and you can tell she loves it. It shows through. Also, as the subject matter does require discussion and different views, she encourages us to talk amongst ourselves and discuss different traits and styles of music. On top of it all, she listens to her students comments and suggestions and takes them into account.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Nothing. None I feel she should drop a lesson or two and focus on the major music themes. try to make the presentations differ should decrese little writting assignment. If person do not have idea for writing assignment such as reading paper, probably it is little difficult. hope should do more explain about writting assignment. none no idea. During the course she has been changing for the better becuase of our presentations we had to do in class. She learned from us which makes her powerpoints and presentations/instructions easy to understand. The powerpoints show visual pictures, not too many words, and videos which keeps the students entertained. None the tests would be shorter, it felt like there was a lot of information that needed to be remembered. I think disscussing it as a class worked better than breaking off into smaller groups as the course went on. Once people were familar with the terminoligy and comforatable using it not as much of a need for the smaller group discussions. They seemed to digress slightly. Also the class where we got up and had to find students that could do one of the 4 things helped bring class together and would suggest doing that sooner in the course. add more cultures in the course, other than asia and america Be more confident! It is obvious that you are very knowledgeable of your field, and you are always very prepared each time you come to class. Take pride in knowing that you are constantly on top of your game! I suggest that she should give more hand outs. None!!! i think everything is perfectly fine the way it is, including the exams. There shouldn't be any multiple choice. It's better to let the students thing for themselves. More hands-on activities like the hula, bringing in guest speakers were good too N/A none. the exams tho are too long. I can't really think of anything I would want to change about the class. I think the only thing I would change about this class would be maybe doing more activities. I thought it would of been good to do more group activities and interact more with other students because by the end of the semester I didn't know half of the people in my class. None i think she should allow more extra credit and change the test's to multiple choose. There are no changes i would want to make with this Professor. She is perfection at it's fullest. N/A :) No changes are needed. No changes needed. I don't have any changes for Mrs. Yang nothing really, everything she did was good. Some of the students suggested multiple choice for the exams but i thought the way she had it was perfect. If people studied, the exam was easy to follow. No changes If she could speak up a little louder, and maybe not ask the class as many open-ended questions. "What do you think?" is sometimes very daunting to answer. Sometimes it's alright but most of us are shy. While the lecture-and-test method is straightforward and can get the job done, I'd like to see if she could create some other way of teaching the class. I really liked how she went out of the box in her teaching when she brought over guest speakers, played more music and video to illustrate what she teaches, etc. I wish she would've done more of that.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

She would frequently ask if there were any questions, she knew all the students names, knew the subject well, and made students feel comfortable in her class. and most of all she gave us opportunities to watch free events. If a student didn't understand a certain part of what we were currently learning, she would go over it again and help them understand. She helped us out alot by reviewing for the exams. She kept students aware of their grades and where they stand in the class in relation to the other students. asked them questions She encourages students to analyze subjects by themselves, and she asks questions in order to encourage students to reveal any doubts they might have. she asked if anyone needed help, or if questions were not clear to students. she concern to every studenrs and she want to know every students name. She addressed to the class about turning in the Chapter Notes on time, since there are students who haven't been doing that assignment. Plus this course requires to have 5 completed Chapter Notes turned in. I guess my only response to this is making time out of her schedule to help students get the assignments finished when they needed to. She listened to students feedback about the first midterm, and agreed to put up class presentations and notes on laulima, which made it very easier and helpful to study for the other exams she understood that we have lives outside of school and was willing to work with you on things after class. Always made sure we were participating. Encouraged comments and questions. She always asks if we have questions, and she takes the time to answer them in class if everyone seems to be having difficulty with the same thing. If students need more help with one area than another, she will modify her plans in order to allot more time for the area of difficulty. If we need to hear a music sample again in order to better understand a certain concept or to hear a certain sound that we might have initially missed, she gladly replays it because she knows that our learning is important to us. She is also more than willing to answer questions outside of class time. Although attendance counts for our grades, she understands that students may have days in which they are ill or in which they have emergencies (e.g. I had a family emergency this semester), and so she gives us 3 days in which we may be absent for these reasons if they should ever occur. As students (and quite frankly, as human beings), it makes us more comfortable knowing that we have the freedom to take a day or so to recover from the natural, and often times inevitable, stresses and obstacles of life. She understands that, although we are students working toward achieving a goal, we are not machines; she acknowledges that we are beings susceptible to things beyond our control. As adults trying to make it in this world, it is nice to know that teachers still remember what it is like to be a struggling student. She was always encouraging students to ask the presenting student about their power point. Giving students ample time and chances for feedback. always encourages us to participate. Always would let us know if we're missing anything and was lenient on due dates USE THE VEDIO just talk to her to let her know whats going on and she will help you ina way where you can manage She's always willing to help and encourages to ask for help when we need it as well as to speak up in class. She really wants us to do well and pass the class. Helped me through the semester when I had hard times. Man Yang showed concern for students because she was always trying to help us understand what we were learning. When we were confused she always had an answer. She also gave us good review sheets before our exams which was very helpful in remembering the information. She is flexible with deadlines and i feel like she wants everyone to succeed she made sure she got to know each student and she always goes around asking how are we each class day. She is very kind. Most teachers i come across are not nearly as kind as she is. She made sure that we understood the lesson plan and kept us up to date about the assignments and everything. She always wants students to participate in in-class activities. She also offered extra credit opportunities. Man Yang showed concern for students (us) by having surveys to find out what/how she could improve the class and she showed us our grades to let us know how we were doing in the class. She reminds student to do the reading, make reading notes, write event reports and other work. If anyone had conflict with completing a homework assignment, missed a class, and/or needed help with a certain part of the slideshow she is more than willing to help us out. by giving us extra credit and time to do homework. She announced constant reminders of assignments that were due the next class and made sure everyone was keeping up. She always asked if we had questions, and encouraged us to share our thoughts on every lesson plan in class. When I was supposed to give a presentation, my computer unexpected stopped working and I couldn't take it in do a slideshow. Ms. Yang emailed me back asking if I had a thumbnail and that she'd be willing to accommodate me on her computer. Sadly, I did not check my email in time. But she told me I could do extra credit so that was good. She always sticks behind after the class finishes and encourages students to come up and ask any questions they may have on the lecture that day. I've taken advantage of that opportunity on several occasions, and I've always received good help whenever I did. fairly.

Yes, She will teach you things in a fun way to learn. Yes i would recommend her to students because her class is fun and easy to pass if you participate and do your assignments. She gives away many extra credit and is very helpful to everyone. You learn a lot about music and i like that she does powerpoint presentations every class. It makes learning much easier and better in my opinion. Yes her class was very interesting! I would. I learned a lot and I feel it was a class with little stress in which you still learn a lot. read the chapters Yes I would recommend her to other students because she is very enthusiastic about the subjects she teaches, and she has a good methodology when explaining her topics. yes.. its a fun class, also you learning a lot of culture background yes, because she is very kind1. Yes, I would recommend Man Yang to students because her class is very straight forward, her study guides are exactly what's going to be on the test, and the activities we do in her class are fun. Does a good job! N/A She is very positive and funny. She was very nice. I have noted that she is always asking for students feedback. She always wants to make sure that students are learning. She is always eager to listen to students opinions in order to improve the effectiveness of her course. thank you for everything. keep up the good work. no idea She is an awesome teacher and individual! She is a good teacher and is easy to pass if you do all the homework that is required. Nothing else to say. great instructor, fun class to be in, would always have something new to show us to correlate or to bring the music of the chapter to life. I realy enjoyed this course and learned quite a bit about music and cultures i havnt had a chance to learn much about. The Chinese section was especially interesting. Native american was also informative and i wish there had been more on it. More players the better as well that was by far the best part. African drumming was my favorit part of this class. She is doing a fantastic job! She seemed a bit shy at first, but that is probably very common for graduate students teaching a college course. As time went by, she seemed more comfortable teaching. Overall an excellent instructor. I wish there were more instructors like her. Keep it up Ms. Man! She is very caring, chill, and fun. I enjoyed her class and she was a great instructor/teacher! Her class is really amazing, I get to learn different genres and different kinds of instruments. She's a great teacher. nothing, really, she is very good. Overall great teacher. I wish she taught more classes. One of my favorite teachers and an all around great person. 18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

She made it her rask to make sure we understood the subject very very well. Notes are on laulima and we are also given study guides. We also have reviews for our exams the week before. Learning about Hawaiian music. the resources available Learning about World Music is a wonderful way of learning about worlds cultures. Im very happy I took this class because there are many things I have learned about other cultures and about my own, that I would have not learned otherwise. It is amazing how much information instruments and music conveys. reviews were most helpful. and the teacher would go over subject very well. about the Hawaiian music, because i never had listen to hawaiian music, that's why. I found that the structure of her study guides are most valuable and helpful about the course because if you do it correctly and review it, you'll do good on the exam. By completing this course, I am one step closing to entering the Nursing Program. Also, it allows me to categorize or explain different types of music that I hear on the radio. The power presentations were crucial lifesavers to use to study for the exams. all of the listening samples of music were extremely helpful. having the demonstrations in class from diffrent experts was very engaging and informative. I likes that her lectures were very visual, lots of power points and videos. also hands on learning! She has expanded our thinking about music and its function in different cultures. She has made us more aware of the fact that everything is relative; different cultures view things differently. No one way of thinking is better than another, and music is seen very differently throughout the world. Our western culture has made us so close minded when it comes to music, and I am very glad that she had broadened my thinking and opened my mind to other perspectives. I feel more worldly simply because I took this course with Man Yang! Not only has she opened my mind to different views of music around the world, but she has also changed my way of thinking in general. I am no longer as narrow minded as I was at the beginning of the semester, and things that are foreign are no longer viewed as strange... they are simply different. I have learned to accept that the standards by which I was raised are not the "norm" for everyone, and that basically everything is relative. Culture plays a huge role in how we view the world and how we interact with others, and it was nice to learn about other cultures and what the world might look like through their eyes. I especially appreciated that I was able to learn all of this through music! That the every power point we went through in class was put up on Laulima. Class participation. The study guides for the exam was so helpful! If it wasn't for the study guide, I wouldn't know where to begin studying. Thank you for that! I got a new perspective of music and got to understand it a bit more. It helped me appreciate music a lot more than I already had. The lecture, power points and class discussions were very useful. I thought learning about different styles of music around the world was very helpful. I think it is valuable to know not only about your culture, but the cultures around you. This course provided me with information about music that I would of never known about before. From learning their music, I was able to understand a culture better in terms of religion, community, entertainment, values, etc. New ability to understand the structure of music i learned to appreciate the different cultures and their music I learned. And I enjoyed learning. Learning about music from other world cultures. Learning about different types of cultural music and making new friends. I really liked the visuals in class; the power points were REALLY great because they were simple and easy to understand. Also, I liked the music samples provided before the class even starts and the samples played for every section. It's fun to listen to them. I sometimes write the songs down so I can listen to them later. (: I would say that her presentation with the subjects we covered throughout the semester makes it very interesting and easy to follow. I took band in high school and I took this class thinking it was just a straight music class. I was a little dissapointed knowing it was a music "history" class, but Beryl taught us about the different cultures and the sound of the music in them. dont know I really learned a lot about different types of music form different cultures around the world. She always posted her notes up on Laulima incase we missed a section or part of her notes. That was very helpful. I like learning about the musical terms, and different instruments and music from other cultures. I suppose what was most helpful was seeing slides of the instruments, and knowing what to listen for.. Being able to define and differentiate between different genres and styles of music. Also, being exposed to all sorts of different sounds and what people could call "noise" and see the aesthetics behind it all.

Knows the subject. Very talented. She provided a lot of feedback. She is very encouraging and helpful. No matter how much help we may need she is always willing to help each student with their weaknesses. she is very kind and friendly, and she listened our saying carefully. and she tried to make this class funny, so i can enjoy the class. She is a very good piano player, and she is very nice Right now, her biggest strength is knowing how much she knows the subject. A lot of teachers would teach a subject, not knowing a lot of it. Or sometimes a teacher would making contradictions while teach. She knew what she was doing and was very clear, and didnt' contradict. She was so kind and passionate for teaching. I really enjoyed the piano class. I am happy to be one of her class's student. She is very skilled in what she is teaching and she tries really hard to make sure that all her students understand the material and are keeping up with the course. She knows the content very well and she is very good at explaining the music simply and gives good feedback when playing a piece.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Syllabus needs some work. When I first saw it on the first day of school I was very confused. sometimes, there was some student who interupt out class, she responded kindly. i think she have to be more strict. no changes, the class was fine I would say be more aware of what students are doing in class. I notice that students would do something else while she's teacher. So my only concern would be to be more aware about the surroundings. none. She should use a baton for teaching students how to conduct properly. Maybe she should get students to use some type of stick like a pen to teach students how to conduct. I suggest that it'd be good to give more instruction on the color map at first. I wasn't sure how to do the first one so when it got to the second one I could do a lot better.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Participation is the key to this class. Provided feedback and encouraged us to learn on our own. She went around the class and assisted every student. by asking how we were doing, and helping us if we had trouble She showed concern in her own way. I can't put it detail, but she did. she always encouraged me to play a piano and ask me everything is alright or do you have any problem in your piece. She always dedicated time during class to provide individual attention to each student to make sure everyone understands the course material. She showed concern for students by going to each of us individually and working with us on the pieces that we had to play. It really helped to get feedback on the pieces that I played for in class.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. She is very helpful and knowledgeable. Very fair on test grades. Yes I would recommend to other studens yes, because of a very good teacher! and I think she is the best teacher for a beginner, too. the beginner can understand and improve their skill easily. yes, she is a very skilled piano player, a good teacher, and she is nice Yes, I wouldn't mind recommending her to students. yes of course, if a student is beginner I wanna recommend her class because she will teach simple and basic contens that you should know to play a piano and read notes. I would recommend her to students because she is a very kind teacher so beginning piano students don't feel so intimidated. She is also a very informative teacher that makes learning the subject easy to understand. of course yes! because, she makes students feel comfortable, and she teach us very well. Yes, I would recommend this teacher to other students because she is very nice and encouraging to her students and really helps out with getting through the pieces.

I enjoyed her class she made me want to come to class everyday. she is very sweet and nice to everyone. I think I would say that she is doing a good job so far being a piano teacher. Thank you and happy new year~!! haha I would just like to say that she is an excellent teacher who really cares about her students. She really shows how honored and happy she is when she sees how well her students have progressed throughout the semester. you are a good teacher! i am so happy to meet you.

Most valuable is to practice and practice in order to get better learning how to play piano, ive always anted to learn, and now I have and I will continue next semester. What helped me the mst was that Ms. Yang helped us at our own pace. That's important. Teachers have to be able to communicate with their students. If there's no communication, the student is bound to fail in the course. I learned basic piano terms and cords The individual attention to students during class and the free write assignments that have students write down how they feel throughout the course. You get to learn the basics about the piano and get to learn the chords for the piano.
