9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning the underlying cultures of the government and learning to analyze the structures inside the cultures of the government (my other major is poli sci).
Watching The Wire alongside the readings provided an opportunity to apply the concepts from the readings to real, modern-day problems in society. The essays provided a means of thinking critically about the material and developing our own ideas in writing.
I thought that the podcasts were the most valuable
feedback on material
The discussions. It was always nice to see what others had to say about the readings and what we watched.
The material was interesting.
Using a television series such as The Wire in order to follow the concepts presented to us in this course was a wonderful new way of learning. It was nice to watch the concepts actually play out and analyze them through a story line that continued on throughout the course.
The use of the TV show The Wire made understanding the concepts a lot easier because we were able to make connections in the TV show. Also, the podcasts that were set up were very helpful in clarifying some of the concepts and such.
The most valuable aspects of the course for myself was that the course was offered online it allowed the students to keep their own pace with the work load for the week. I also like how the discussion board was utilized to not just discuss the episodes of the Wire that were watched that week but to also incorporate ideas from the weekly required readings. I enjoyed that we had weekly assigned reports that were pretty much open-ended as far as what we could comment on, I really enjoy classes such as this where we can really discuss how the material came across to us the students and revisit outside opinions of the subject matter pertaining to the course, with no too many restrictions. Also, I really enjoyed the visual component to the course, which allowed us to use the Wire series episodes as our "text book" for the course. This is not only economically efficient for a summer course where students probably wouldn't fully utilize a standard text book, but I believe in the context and initiatives of this course, the Wire season which we examined was the perfect fit, really encompassing all the contemorary problems that were mentioned in regard to the course material.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I think the readings would have been valuable if I were able to understand them as a whole...
The discussion boards on Laulima, which interesting and interactive, contributed less to my understanding of the course material than the readings or the essays.
I thought that the discussions online were the least valuable. No one really participated until the day before essays were due
Some of the tedious readings but I still think they were valuable
Study of Contemporary Problems is a misleading title. We focused solely on very few aspects, repetitively.
I would have appreciate more guided discussions from the instructor. I also would have like it if the guidelines for student discussion were less ambiguous. I think if there had been more of a push from the instructor it would have made it easier to stay on top of the discussion portion of the course.
Unfortunately, I don't think the discussion board was utilized by the students as effectively as possible - it seemed as though only certain students would use the discussion board to make useful comments towards the works of that week in a way which would be thought provoking and helpful to the other students ideas when writing the reports. I also think since the discussions between the past professor for the course and our current would have been a really good tool to utilize to spark more involvement in the discussion board - but since the talks were only in audio with no video its difficult to listen to that long of an audio without a visual (at least for myself).

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Easier readings or more guidance through the hard readings
In addition to episodes from The Wire, the instructor may consider posting other supplementary videos to further illustrate concepts and ideas from the readings. Many of the readings were also difficult to read through, so perhaps providing additional summaries or notes on readings would improve student understanding.
Structure discussions on Laulima differently. Maybe an earlier deadline so everyone is forced to participate?
Nothing. keep up the great work!
I think more presence in the discussion would help, the prompts were vague and I personally would have benefited had there been more interaction.
I would have appreciate more guided discussions from the instructor. I also would have like it if the guidelines for student discussion were less ambiguous. I think if there had been more of a push from the instructor it would have made it easier to stay on top of the discussion portion of the course.
I thought that he did a fantastic job teaching this course, I feel that I have a lot more knowledge on this subject and a deeper understanding. The only thing that may help with the discussion posts would be requiring a minimum number of posts each week. It was hard to get a good discussion going because a lot of the students waited until Saturday to make their posts.
Since this is a summer course, I really think all the components for a successful 6 week dive into a course were their: discussion and conversation, visual content, provoking questions.. and ability to respond. The main thing I would have liked to see was more participation in the discussion boards, and I know from the start we were told that it wouldn't be given to us how many posts we needed to make on the discussion boards/times or dates when we needed to have posted something - but I really think having a minimum amount of posts would really cause more lesser motivated students to start utilizing the discussion board in a more effective way for other class members to actually be able to have a discussion on the content instead of saying their personal response and asking questions that are never answered by the students.
19. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?

20. Other comments:
I enjoyed the class and it was nice that you didn't ask too much out of us since it is summer!
none
Got all of the assignments back on time. Each assignment also had comments which really helped me to know what he was looking for.
I had a hard time seeing the correlation between the TV show we were expected to watch, and the readings. I felt that a lot more guidance would have benefited the students. There was a lot of difficult (overcomplicated and excess use of jargon) reading, and there lacked the open dialogue that I've experienced in other online courses which facilitated it.
Thanks for a great course Eric! Looking forward to taking another one of your classes in the future.
Eric was a great person to teach this course. It honestly comes across that he is interested in both the course content and the educational value the students are taking from the course. It was very refreshing to have a professor who was so active in the discussions of the course and really anwsered any questions or problems we had along the way. Unlike other professors I've had at UH in departments such as Chemistry, Math and Biology that clearly show a disconnect with their students and even the subject matter they are lecturing about in some cases, Eric was efficient and mindful in the work load that was given over such a fast paced course and fair in grading. I would definitely recommend him as a professor for other courses in the following years, and would want to personally take another course of his that was offered!

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Watching the wire
applying theory of readings to an actual text that was interesting and understandable
Critiquing The Wire
Being able to apply anthropological concepts to real world and contemporary problems in a clear way.
The variety of articles was fantastic and watching of the Wire really connected the issues in a great way.
Following "The Wire" which is one of the best television shows that has been on t.v. in awhile was a great idea because it brings up so many good topics and ideas for discussion that affect our lives in present times. Lot's of good discussions and good insights on how we can strive for better societies.
the podcasts served as a nice way of tieing the show and readings together
The podcasts were wonderful and they helped me to understand the course material much better.
Conversations and readings.
Tying in concepts learned to real life situations.
using real life examples to support course materials
The podcast, the readings, and watching episodes of The Wife.
I enjoyed the format of the course, the readings complimented the episodes and I like the podcasts to guide us through the course. The podcasts made the class feel more "authentic" then too virtual and distant.
Connecting the Anthropology to a show like the wire, it made the class more interesting and inspired more conversation and curiosity for me. It also made it easy to 'get into' the class!!
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
n/a
The briefness of the class and the lack of personal contact inhibited good communication.
None. It was a great course.
the online discussions were a bit of a free for all, it would be better perhaps for them to be more regulated
Some of the readings were a bit challenging. Once I understood the main point of them I felt like there was a lot of wasted text used to get to that point.
Discussion, it needed to be more directed.

I really enjoyed the podcasts, with that said they could have been a little better planned... sometimes it was easily to get lost in the conversation.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Since this is an online course he could make more announcements regarding the assignments. Definitely more communication would help. I had a hard time trying to discover where everything that we needed was placed on Laulima. I missed a paper completely because I had a medical family emergency and wasn't allowed to turn the paper in late.
make podcasts more interesting and with deeper analysis of show
Physical course during semester
Be more involved in the messageboard discussions.
He is a very attentive teacher. I like taking online classes with him. He responds to emails quickly and makes thoughtful comments and questions in our online discussions.
Keep teaching, good work!
perhaps give the students more help and explaination with the papers, maybe include some tips or instructions in the podcasts
Perhaps have readings that are more interesting or maybe ones that get to the point without a bunch of extra opinions from the authors.
Keep being cheerful!
He explained things great during the podcasts.
more structured guidance on term papers

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I like that the instructor was available via laulima, both the message board and discussion. The books required for the course weren't heavy reading, although they can be boring to read at times. The instructor's comments on the essays were helpful; the comments were easy to understand and constructive. I used his comments to help me improve on my second paper. The class atmosphere on laulima encouraged me to "talk" more than I would usually do in an actual classroom setting, which is really nice. I like that at the beginning of each week, the questions on the class discussion board were pretty open ended, so there were no right or wrong answers. I like that Professor Cunningham actually reads through the posts, comments on what's interesting, clarifies, or steers the conversation in a different direction that students haven't considered yet. I like that he actually has some knowledge and has actually studied Japanese. I find that helpful and insightful. :) I like that he actually has a lecture prepared each week and has an audio recording to go with it to supplement the reading, which I heard some other professors don't do that, so I'm glad that I took this class with Professor Cunningham.
The reading materials were very well selected. The textbooks assigned provided significant amount of information related to class objectives.
the japanese videos on netflix
the readings and weekly lectures
Class discussions were mainly based upon what other students had to say about a certain topic. By posting online, other students can learn from each other's knowledge and experience. Students were also able to learn and elaborate on what they knew about Japan and also to learn from what other students had to say. Overall, online discussions became a two-way street.
The lectures and online material in addition tot he choice of texts were valuable to the learning.
Reading assignments and papers.
Learning about other classmates experiences and relationship(s) to Japan.
I really enjoyed his powerpoint lectures. It was easy to follow and didn't ramble on.
the movies were valuable in that they gave visuals to the lessons we were learning in the books.
The lectures (powerpoint) every week were very useful and helped with the topics we were discussing during that week. I enjoyed the books and movies.
I really liked how you presented the lectures and not just left the power point slide as is.
The resources and materials given were able to spark good thoughts and conversation in the class discussions.
The diverse readings of the three texts.
The lectures is where I obtained the bulk of my knowledge. It is quite confusing because sometimes the lectures and readings do no match up and the readings are difficult to follow.
I think the lectures, readings, and movies were the most valuable in this course. I especially enjoyed the movies because it had underlying connotations for us to figure out for ourselves. It helped the students draw up their own conclusions about Japanese society instead of just being given information, we had to learn it ourselves.
I enjoyed the lecture slides.
I liked the combination of movies, books and discussions in order to learn about the concepts.
The slides worked really well with the powerpoints. Using the movies to support the lectures was a great idea.
I thought everything was well organized and presented in a clear and effective way.
The required books were on point and very appropriate to the course goals.
Having lecture in both document and mp3 was really good.
I had taken 5 online classes before, and I like this class more than others because he gave us the lecture (powerpoint slides with his voice). It help me a lot!! Thank you.
- class discussion - feedback from the instructor and classmates on discussions and papers
the lectures, readings, and class discussions online also being able to ask for help and Professor Cunningham provided me with resources to review
Eric provided a recorded to accompany the PP or .pdf lecture. this helped tremendously. He also was involved regularly with the student discussions on Laulima. It shows Eric is interested in what the student discuss. It also encouraged me to participate more.
The readings and films he brought to the course were amazing in that they really do personify the culture of japan.
lecture
The aspects of the course that were the papers that we had to write. I feel I learned a lot through the research process and trying to apply the course material to my paper.
The lecture paired with the power point helped me to understand each weeks topic more efficiently.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The book Men of Uncertainty was not an interesting read.
all were useful
movies
There was only a limited amount of lectures from the instructor.
The method of paper topic assignment to me was not valuable as it was hard to combine class material with the paper, it would have been better if there was more guidance to what the paper topic should be.
Class discussion was least valuable to me.
Some of the readings seemed too long.
I wouldn't say least valuable but perhaps "dry" reading. That would be our last text. (Sorry!) I had a hard time focusing on the material because it was the least interesting for me.
nothing.
N/A
Very unclear about the guidelines and requirements for the papers and the class in general. mp3 lectures could get kind of boring.
The fact that this course lacks a physical presence. It can't be helped though.
The papers. I know that this is the bulk of the grade for the class, but I feel like these papers are not explained well (criteria) and do not demonstrate if you have an understanding or if you did the class readings. The class discussions were also very odd to me. Many of the discussions did not have much to do with the material, they seem to go off track quite often.
I think that the class discusssions were the least valuable because many people talk about their personal experiences in Japan and with Japanese culture, but the other's may be taking this class for a Japanese culture credit and are not Anthropology or Japanese majors. At points, I felt somewhat discouraged to post because I felt it was hard to contribute to the conversation with such limited personal experiences to pull from. However, it is a good idea to check up on if students are keeping up with the reading.

The powerpoint presentations seemed out of order/ disorganized. It would have been nice to have a more structured lesson in which we can follow along with.
N/A
The films.
Too much reading.
The required films (especially second one) were not so good. It is difficult to understand how the second film relate with Japanese culture.
none.
the movies sometimes were not talked about enough during the discussions.
While the first two books were interesting to me, Immortal Wishes was a bit slow and boring.
Some of the lectures where a bit lengthy. Personally, it was hard to listen to the whole lecture. Eric also was very timely with his email response and showed a willingness to help me as a student.
His descriptions of assignments were very vague and when I asked for help he told me to read the syllabus which was the thing I was confused with to begin with!
online discussion
I felt the final book (Immortal Wishes) was redundant. The same message that everything on Mount Akakura was sacred literally and symbolically was repeated throughout the text. If possible I would assign another text for the course.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He could post the lectures online earlier sometimes.
I feel that the course could do with more teacher's comments. Perhaps after all students posted their opinions for class discussions for that week, the professor could then talk about it in more detail as an additional lecture material. I feel that this would greatly enhance the discussion experience. Since sometimes, students have different and conflicting opinions regarding a subject. But since it was never brought up in additional class lectures or comments by the professor, I have a hard time understanding which perspective is correct and which is not.
being an online only class always has its challenges but it was taught well despite the limitations and I felt that I learned alot.
maybe keep students updated on grades
It wouldf be good if this course was taught both in-class and online. In this manner, students can gain more knowledge about the course material from both the instructor and student feedback.
A few short paper assignments, 1 page a week would be helpful to expand on the knowledge level of the class.
Not rely so much on class discussion.
Maybe if lectures were up a bit earlier?
Can't think of anything.
shorten the reading assignments, so that students can read slowly and throughly to fully understand the concepts. I understand this is a summer class so it is excelerated but it was really hard completing all your readings, watching your movies and being an active post-er along with taking another calss and two jobs.
nothing to improve.
N/A
Definitely could have used more guidelines and specifics in describing what was needed from his students. More structure is needed in this class.
Provide an easier way to access the videos. Conduct a survey on best available times for the students to conduct a live chat discussion on lecture topics.
Clarify expectations for papers, give more guidelines and additional assignments.
I do enjoy the online lectures for this course. As this is my first online class, I'm not sure if all professors post slides and voice overs, but I think it is a good idea to communicate with us because the recordings seem unedited and relaxed. I'm not sure if there is a way of doing this but maybe the discussions could be separated into smaller groups and that way people are able to get to know their classmates better. I also think that the guidelines for the assignments should be a little clearer. As far as the participation goes, I've noticed a lot of students only post once or twice, but we haven't received any feedback on our participation grades so we're not sure if that's sufficient for full credit.

More structured discussions, better power points, and be on time in posting materials.
I think clearer instructions in general would improve this course. Especially for papers.
I think it would have been nice to see where my grade stood throughout the session. That way I would have known exactly what to do to earn/ maintain an A.
Post lecture at the beginning of the week, not in the middle of the week.
I really like how he teach, and his lecture is really helpful to me. Maybe he can find more interesting and better films.
'Adrenalin drive' is a bit old. However, given the availability of Japanese films with English subtitles, it may be hard to find a replacement.
A suggestion would be to have some to the classmates for each discussion bring up some questions in each module and have the rest of the classmates respond to the questions asked. That could be interesting to see.
Break the lectures up into 2 a week and make em half hour or so! I do not know how Eric treated the other student so I am neutral on this question. ecafe should reword this question to "me as a student fairly"
Give students more details on what he expects from them.
The teaching of the course could be improved by trying to encourage students to respond and engage with each others responses in the online discussions.
Posting the lectures a little earlier in the week would be more helpful for me as it aided me with the discussion topic.
Eric is a very reliable and approachable instructor. He participates in discussions and provides us with weekly lectures, which have helped make sense of the huge amounts of information we were speedily reading through. I would have been more comfortable having access to Laulima's Gradebook feature, to know where I stood grade-wise with the weekly discussions throughout the session.

The discussions were hard to follow. People (especially in the beginning) did not really seem to be reading each other's comments.
29. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Mixture of media and reading materials
30. Other comments:
Since Eric is the GA for course, I have put the most important aspects of the course on the main instructor's evaluation, Dr. Paul Christensen. Eric, however, is a valuable asset to the course. He is very intelligent and knows subject matter very well.
Good format, structure, and choice of topics to discuss.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
learning about different cultures around the world and a variety of different perspectives on those cultures.
The enthnographic assignments were pretty interesting, as were some of the movies.
A lot of the basic information on culture, anthropological methods, and points of view were not only interesting, but helped me in approaching problems in my other classes (writing essays in my English class for example).
His experiences in Japan were very interesting, videos were relatable yet fun
The movies, although most people slept through were very educational.
Understanding how different cultures in the world are constructed
the slideshows and videos gave a great picture and helped me learn easier
The videos help to give interesting ways to enhance his lectures.
The videos were the most interesting and kept my attention during classes. However the lectures seemed poorly planned at times and it felt that many tangents were taken. The quiz review sessions were extremely useful and I felt the most learning happened during those sessions.
learning about religion.
The lectures that were informative and entertaining.
I enjoyed talking about the people and cultures.
The section on Identity.
All of the different cultures view of life and the way they lived was helpful in learning and understanding.
As is expected in a cultural class, I'm glad that there was little discussion of American cultures in the book that were covered in class. If both had been covered it would have made for a boring class. I'm glad that we're taught more than what we see everyday.
The insight that the teacher provided regarding his own personal experiences and opinions!
Not much
f
i enjoyed him tying in real world examples and situations we could relate to to the over all concept
Professor Eric Cunningham truly displayed a great knowledge of the course and provided a well-structured introductory course to anthropology. Additionally, his utilization of current world-issues in his lectures help students grasp concepts as well as enforcing the broad spectrum that anthropology covers.
Learning ABout the Human Culture
To be more open minded and to look at things in different perspectives because all our customs and beliefs are all different.
Differences in cultures (i.e. explanation about behavior, customs, beliefs).
Films
Doing the ethnographic projects.
The interview of the third project was the most valuable thing i got from this course.
The documentaries we watched were extremely important to all aspects of anthropological society in our modern-day world. Professor Cunningham really encouraged students to think as an unbiased member of society and take in to account all sides of the spectrum.
lectures
I believe that having an understanding of culture and embracing it in different ways were most valuable to me. A portion of the class that impacted me the most were the teachings about relativism, objectivism, and ethnocentrism. I strongly felt that those points truly gave me a means to view diverse culture properly. I enjoyed the awesome titles for each section.
I may not have liked some of the things he said, or cared for others opinions, but i gained a better knowledge and understanding for people native to the hawaiian islands, and a respect.
Learning about other cultures and mindsets
Different perspective in a anthropological approach
the hot chicks in class
The professors personal insight into the field.
The projects were the most valuable because it allowed you to somewhat get a first-hand experience of being an anthropologist.
Good power point presentations and assignments
He made it fun and interesting to learn
He taught the course effectively, made it interesting.
The most valuable aspect was the emphasis on understanding cultures and the background of those cultures. Most of the concepts referred to capitalism and civilization.
Applying other cultures to how I live today.
The movies and videos were entertaining but yet at the same time informational. It was easy to understand and comprehend. Learning is fun most of the time, it does get a little boring at times.
The different cultural perspectives. Really enjoyed the videos that were shown in class.
Topics on ethnography, relativity, ethnocentrism, and beliefs.
I valued how the professor had personal experience in anthropology and was able to share them. The videos were also very useful. They offered much insight into particular societal issues and informed me of some historical events.
Review sessions really helped for the exams. I also really liked some of the movies. I really liked how this class was set up and I find the text book to be interesting.
The powerpoints that got straight to the point and told you what you needed to do or know.
1)I used the time to study for math class. 2) I get three credits.
The different perspectives of many different situations offered by this class.
All of the films that were shown in class were so informational and eye-opening. They challenged me to think with a different perspective and to understand and learn so much about many different cultures. This class is definitely my favorite class of the semester. Eric Cunningham is a great instructor and his T.A. Shanna is also very helpful. The projects and assignments were always fun to do. I enjoyed each and every one of them. Professor Cunningham has always taken the time to give help to the students who could not make it to the regular review sessions. Class discussions are always encouraged and everyone who wants to speak is always given a chance to share their thoughts.
The videos gave me insight on the problems people face in different places and displayed different values people from different ethnicities had. I really liked how the book used for the course provided a lot of information on different aspects of life.
The videos used in the course was very valuable in trying to see the concepts talked about in the class in real life situations.
what we learned about culture, globalization, and "society and the self"
movies
I enjoyed the films we watched in class. I also enjoyed talking about modern events.
applying the subject to life
The ethnographic projects were most valuable because it made the concepts we learned in class easier to understand. I was also able to apply it to my life.
Every aspect of education is valuable
Probably the parts about social structure
the interesting topics
I loved his powerpoint because they were filled with color/pics and he always related our lessons to recent events which made them interesting.
Very knowlegable in material, drawing on experiences from Japan Tied in movies to lectures very well
the concepts and the ideas that were different from our own cultures and how at first we perceive them as bad/wrong, but when we look through their eyes, it sort of makes sense why they do what they do.
everything
The study sessions were very helpful to all students in the fact that they helped us better prepare for the quizzes by making sure we knew which material to study.
I found the research and ethnographic assignments most valuable because it gave me a sense of how to interview and interpret the results gathered from the interview.
I found that his passion for anthropology was most valuable. He expressed a couple of his own opinions when discussing about the military.
Just making me think more outside of the box.
Viewing people without ones own opinions being involved
I really appreciated the slides and visual effects to gain a better understanding.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
some of the videos were not that interesting or helpful
Lectures sometimes got boring- hard to pay attention. Also, I ended up not reading the book at all.
There really wasn't anything that stood out as unnecessary or pointless; I felt the portion of the class about the Avatar movie was kind of meh, but even then it still had it's purpose.
the powerpoints weren't that powerful
I feel like the book is idiotic. The author focuses more on stories in order to get a anthro view across instead of telling us strictly about a culture so we can know more about the culture itself rather than one persons experience with that culture
Vocab words
I think everything we did in the class was valuable in some way
The lecture slide contents.
i dont think anything was least valuable.
The fact that it's a huge lecture hall.
It kind of seemed like useful information. It would have been nice if you told us how we could use this in everyday life.
Cant think of any. Everything had a decent level of value.
Nothing seemed least valuable for the course.
I found everything to be of value!
He was very unsure of his material.
d
I thought that at times it could be too easy unless you were applying yourself a lot
The only thing disappointing about the course were the students who didn't have enough respect for professor Cunningham to attend his lectures.
Going to Class Everyday
I thought majority of everything was important not only for academic reasons but for real life situations

tedious reading, I personally enjoyed the lectures more.
I thought some of the videos were a bit too long. After a certain point in each video, I kind of got the point already.
Some of the material was kind of scattered and disorangized. i think there should be a little better structure.
Just sometimes it being boring
Some things were a little boring/confusing, but that may just be what the actual material comes down to.
The least valuable aspect was the brief discussion about economy. It was never referred to again in the course.
Lots of powerpoint slides, boring, and Cunninghams voice doesnt have too much feeling in it so I get bored easily.
I did not feel that the book was a useful tool in understanding the same concepts that were being taught in lectures.
A couple of the movies were sort of boring.
All the opinionated political/social statements. In this class I learned the definition of Anthropology, and a few concepts about understanding other cultures. Everything else was just a waste of time.
Knowing about the people who were great anthropologists who made a somewhat valuable discovery. I think the most important thing is the concept of thought, not history.
---
Some of the power points didn't really provide information that was useful for the class.
some of the videos
I feel that the book doesn't cover what the class is focused on.

a little more enthusiastic about the subject matter
I like the format the way it is now.
Overall the class was pretty good, there's nothing that I would really change.
Be more personable
None
enforce reading the text more when there are question on the quiz from the book
The content is not exactly the most interesting so it might help to be more active and have more movement. It seemed that he knew what he was talking about it was not presented in an interesting way nor was the professor particularly interesting thus its hard to pay attention in class. Also sometimes the lectures didn't seem coherent to the lecture content and felt more like a story telling environment than a learning environment.
when watching movies, maybe explain what it is going to be about and how it ties into what we are learning in the class at that time.
I wish the classes could be smaller so there could be more discussion.
Somehow make it more interesting. Show us how it can be applied to our lives.
Possibly be a little more enthusiastic while lecturing.
There is nothing else he should do, everything is great!
Show more updated videos.
Be sure of his knowledge of which he is teaching.
d
i think he could encouarge more interaction in the large lecture class
Nothing really.
Give Homework
He should really curve the scores on the tests or offer more extra credit opportunities/classwork
Enforce rules to prevent students from having private conversations during class, it is very disruptive to those students who are in class to actually learn and want to listen to the lecture.
Be more dynamic in speaking, less info on slides so its easier to pay attention and harder to zone out
Very knowledgable, and made it easy to remember things.
The Professor really needs to take control of his students, I would highly advise that he gets their attention more by speaking louder to gain more respect because honestly there's so much talking in the back of the class that the people who actually want to learn cannot pay attention. I think to improve the class the Professor needs to lecture more authoritatively because sometimes it seems like he's talking to himself.
Maybe speak with more entusiasm
I believe that the quizzes should have a greater difficulty. I think that the lectures are sort of plain sometimes. They could be more enthralling.
Not be so boring
great instructor over all, no complaints!
There are a lot of interesting videos to supplement the lectures, but frankly the lectures can get boring.
n/a
more hot chicks and movies
He did not control the students, I understand not everyone is an anthropology major, But students in the back of the class would become unruly and distracting, making it impossible to focus.
I think the way he is currently teaching is just fine. It is very easy to understand the concepts of the course because of the way he explains it.
I think the course is very effectively taught without improvement.
Greater enthusiasm while lecturing would be greatly appreciated from Eric Cunningham. Also, class interest can be improved if the class is half lecture and half class discussion. Students should be given more of a chance to express their opinions rather than taking notes and watching documentaries. In-class interactive activities would be effective as well. Students need more chances to apply what they're learning.
Talk a little louder with more feelings and less mumbling.
Talk more about the cultures that are here in hawaii.
I feel better use of microphone and louder volume in general would help given the size of the class.
He is ok already.
Should talk more enthusiastically and show more passion. Sort of talks monotone so it is hard to be engaged. Also does not take authority in class. A lot of students talk while he lectures and he does not do anything about it. I'm sure it bothers him because it bothers other students.
Nothing. He is on top of things. I like that he holds study groups. It really helps to do well on the exams.
It seemed like he spent a lot of time expressing opinion, rather than fact. Nothing could actually be answered, it was all debatable. The test questions were 90% worthless, basically just checking to see if we remembered pointless details about a video or story. I dont feel like I learned anything about anthropology. I learned a few random cultural facts; trobriand islanders use bannana leaves as currency. Neat.
A bit more slide organization would be nice.
Talk more enthusiastically.
He could try and make stronger connections with what is presented in the videos to what we are learning in the book
not be as monotone-ish. be a little more exciting.
great teacher
Prepare better slideshows.
more extra credit
I think that everything was good and i enjoyed his class very much.
Better reading material. The textbook wasn't that interesting or helpful at times.
have an actual study guide, not just a review session.
More focus on key words in lectures
more than just a lecture
Keep up the good work and continue to show good movies.
cut down on the reading, its obvious the class isn't going to have a "conversation" so maybe one of the ethnographic projects should be a small groups one that challenges the way we think and gets us talking about what we think about other cultures.
make it more fun
no i liked it the way it was
Becoming more involved with the students, mostly be finding ways to relate the material towards the younger crowd.
He can improve his teaching by making his lectures more interesting. I feel that his tone of voice can be improved when elucidating on concepts. I also feel that instead of just listing information on his PowerPoints, he should also have short explanations of each concept listed under the topics.
Talk more about the main parts of the lectures rather then just go through them quickly in class.
Make lectures with more student participation

Class was pretty fun.
This was a fun class. Professor Cunningham doesn't lecture in a monotone voice or in a boring way like most of my other professors. He was able to get me interested in the subject even though it was such a big lecture class.
good class, Cunningham is a good prof, and intellegent just need to modify the course a little bit.
TA was very helpful and easy to approach.
This was one of the best intro classes I have taken thus far. Prof. Cunningham did a very good job at presenting the material in a clear and concise way. Made intro anthropology very interesting!
Much of the material was sociology related, so many of the concepts were self-explanatory for me. I did have trouble staying awake in class because the lectures were so lengthy and monotonous. It's clear to me that Mr. Cunnigham does enjoy teaching anthropology but he could make more of an effort to entertain the class. (See suggestions on #18.)
I missed alot of assignments and i think i might fail this class but i still came to all the classes cause it was interesting.
Overall course was interesting but I had have personal interest in the subject and I think that if I didn't have this interest already then this class would be very boring. How the course is set up is very organized and well thought out, but it would be better if it was given more life from the instructor and TA.
I would suggest this class to anyone who needs three stupid-easy credits in FGB, who doesnt mind wasting a few hours a week.
I would definitely take another course where Eric Cunningham is the instructor for future semesters.
Shannon could be a better TA she seems like she doesn't want to be there
<3 that class, would take more of his !
Good Class

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I love that you do the weekly essays so that I actually get feedback and know how I am doing in the class. THANK YOU for grading things so quickly and breaking up the assignments throughout the semester instead of just having one or two small projects for us to do.
I thought that the discussions online were the most valuable part of the course. Though it was an online course, I was glad that we were still able to communicate with other students and hear different perspectives and views about the readings at hand. Hearing others views on the readings allowed me to see the topic from a different perspective and form a broad perspective that included the views of other students as well as my own; something I would not have been able to do had the discussion not been mandatory. In previous online courses I have taken, the discussion portion has not been mandatory, and therefore no one really used the discussion tool on Laulima to their advantage.
The readings are the bulk of the class, but discussions opened up a venue of participation that enabled us to ask questions and pose new thoughts. The discussions provide more important feedback as to what people are getting from the readings and how we may be interpreting them differently.

I appreciated the wide range of reading materials
14. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I did not think any part of the course was not valuable.
All aspects are valuable and all needed to have a complete course.
It was all valuable!
didn't like the weekly write ups on the readings, mostly because they were required to be single spaced. Just give a word count if you want something more in depth. Single spacing is kind of insulting to my intelligence.

26. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Since it is an on-line class I would suggest requiring students to have their participation comments posted by end of day Thursday vs. end of day Friday. Part of the course objective was for students to incorporate the on-line discussion in the essay, but since the essays are due on Friday and the on-line discussion didn't take place until the 11th hour on Friday most weeks, it wasn't very conducive to including discussion topics/issues in the essay. Having a more active on-line discussion with the majority of the class would have been much more enjoyable rather than waiting all week for someone to post and getting nothing and then being bombarded right before the deadline on Friday night when my essay has already been turned in and I'm done for the week.
I can not think of anything-it is fine the way it is.
The course as it stands now is very good. I especially found the discussion portion each week very valuable. And although the essays at times were daunting, they really helped me to think more critically and improve my writing ability.
Some of the readings are long and detailed, when combined with others, can be a little overwhelming and make commenting on them later very challenging. I would recommend that the readings be focused on material that is better understandable and can contribute to more discussion content. While all the readings are interesting, some are too heavy to fully understand.
Perhaps having a short lecture film on his understanding of assigned readings.
I would've liked more lectures from Eric. Maybe in the form of recorded podcasts or videos. Something that introduces the subject, outlines it and tells the student what Eric knows about it and his opinions about it in more depth. Just posting in response to comments at random doesn't do that.
27. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Prompt, knowlegable, and engaged.
unassuming, understanding, patient
Helpful, knowledgeable
It is difficult to do this for an on-line class when our interaction with the teacher is not really a one-on-one. I think Eric is, focused, interested, knowledgeable. I think he really wants us to learn as much as we can in the time we have.

30. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Awesome, my favorite anthro elective so far and at the top of my list as far as online courses go.
This course was much better than I had previously expected it to be. This is my first course that I am taking outside of the required courses for a major and was a perfect introduction and overview of ecological anthropology. The course tested my abilities to critically think about topics and form my own opinions on these topics and sharing my ideas with my fellow students. It also improved my writing ability and the inline comments/suggestions provided by Eric in my weekly essays were an integral part of my success. The course also taught me about time management. It is easy to wait till the last minute in an online course, especially since you have until 11 pm on a Friday to complete all of the requirements of the week. Although during some weeks I fell victim to procrastination, I tried my best to plan out the readings and divide the readings up daily so that I wouldn't be so overwhelmed by the end of the week. Great course!
It presents a lot of different cultures, and different subjects are covered. I like the course for the information presented on how anthropology is changing and what the direction of ecological anthropology can take for the future. We were introduced to past practices and current ones as well.
It was a challenge, I learned a lot!
It's an interesting course, I enjoyed it although it could use the above improvements
31. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
None
The readings and essays each week were at times daunting, but they were essential parts of my understanding of the subject matter. The only suggestion that I have for future semesters would be to have the discussion portion on Laulima due on Thursday rather than Friday. This would force students to finish readings earlier in the week and allow for a better discussion. I know I fell behind during certain weeks and ended up posting my discussion at 10 pm on Friday night which didn't allow me the time to hear from others on my ideas or receive any feedback from Eric. Just a suggestion, other than that, I really enjoyed the course!
Focus on less articles and more specific ideas of how ecological anthro. can be used. Perhaps scale down the amount of different authors presented and provide the field studies that can be followed in short story form or book form.
This course could be improved by having less readings per week. Each reading is extremely challenging and finishing the numerous readings given every week is demanding due to their difficulty. Also this course could have due dates on Sunday nights instead of Friday nights.
32. Other comments:
None
I was so impressed by how quickly Eric graded and returned our essays on a weekly basis. It was so helpful to have the feedback early and use those suggestions in the upcoming week.
Eric is a great teacher that wants us to be knowledgeable of the subject and wants to present the various forms of study being done. It is a lot to do one semester and he tries to give us forums and discussions that are engaging and interesting. I learned quite a bit and look forward to learning more.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Suplimental videos to course content
Professor Cunningham's personal experiences, with recent fieldwork in Japan, had really brought a modern and more tangible understanding to varying concepts within cultural ecology, political ecology, and spiritual ecology.
audio-visuals, lectures, discussions, readings
All. It was nice to have the different sub-subjects within the class.
Introduction to the theory development.
I felt that class discussions were very helpful in putting things into perspective, and understanding others' points of view. I also believe that class discussions helped point out the weaknesses in the class, and gave all of us an understanding of what concepts we were lacking knowledge in.
Interesting viewpoints presented and analyzed. Multiple perspectives taken on ecological issues. Paper writing. Eric's professional research results.
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Multiple required books were unnecessary
None that I can identify.
n/a
I honestly do not feel there was anything in the class that was not of equal value so I can not answer this question
The introduction of theories and concepts is good, but it should be deeper. The readings are too easily and introductory.
Some of the powerpoints were a little weak... It's hard to teach all the information in 6 weeks, but I feel that the powerpoints were at times hard to follow. We had to speed through them, and at times it was hard to decipher which information was most important.
The final paper could have been designed with more thought and creativity instead of "another term paper" assignment. Something that would involve engaged dialogue and thought processes. Perhaps a group project and presentation.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Some of the readings posted on Laulima were unable to open, possibly a technical error.
More interaction with students, beyond discussion once a week, during lectures. Creating a space for students to connect concepts within class or at least aiding in the process of developing the students personal understanding.
n/a
Maybe spice up the power point presentations. More pictures. Although some may not have been compatible with the software.
He can show more his passion during the teaching. He is definitely knowldegable about the topic, but can show more passion and share more personal experiences with us.
Some more work on lectures, speak faster and with enthusiasm even in dry subject matter such as history lectures.
24. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
His personal experience in the field he is teaching was helpful because he brought lessons learned from his Japan internship and related them to class.
Again, Professor Cunningham's experiences with his recent fieldwork. Even more so, his fresh and modern understanding on the concepts within Anthropological Ecology.
effective communicator in academic setting, balanced coverage on contradictory issues, interest in course content
His research experience was really interesting and I was grateful that he shared it with us.
He is friendly and easygoing. He is knowldegable about the subject and tries to communicate with students.
Very approachable and clear in concepts. Can relate to the students and is willing to help.
Energetic and enthusiastic about ecological anthropology overall, making the subject worth examining deeper than the surface. However, I really believe his structuring of the week was well done by using guest lecturers, videos, and lectures. Next time, I hope he can incorporate more guest lectures.
25. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
While lecturing your voice can become somewhat monotone, spice things up with a class breakout into discussion or ask more direct questions to students to get their participation, instead of having entire lectures of the students sitting and listening, which can get repetitive.
Nothing that I can identify.
n/a
Sometimes the lectures were a bit slow.

The varying readings and how they complimented each other throughout the entirety of the session.
various examples of case studies, audio-visuals, engaging course content with discussions and current events
The instructor is open-minded to any kind of opinions. Great introduction to the theory development.
I liked class discussions
Movies and readings on Hawaii conservation and resource management.
31. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Entire class periods of just sitting and listening to the lectures, more participation would have improved interest.

Great course. Wish more students were enrolled, this class provides valuable LIFE lessons, not merely academic.
