When he forgot to inform us or send an announcement out about movin he test up. Those, who didn't know got to take the test on the original day. While we were goining over the answers, those who didn't ake the test got to take the test in the tesing center.
Willingness to help students and explain material as simply as possible.
He is okay it seems like he is just there to teach

Good instructor. Made it easy to learn the material.
Very good teacher, really enjoyed his class. Made math fun again.
Joyce need to be careful for what he says because sometime it may hurt someones feelings.

Yes, very knowledgable and easy to work with.

He was always available through email if we had any questions and would always ask how the online homework was for us.

Joyce ask the class if anyone has any questions and makes sure to give the class some time to understand the subject.
He always encouraged us to visit him during office hours and to ask any pertinent questions about the topic we were learning.
Explaining every single thing clearly even if we knew about it. Great teaching concept

He explains how he always has time to help on any math that you're confused on
Mr. Joyce is always available for his student to help them either through office hours or email. If someone does not understands it he will go through it again and stay after class if he needs to.
He would always talk about grades, making sure were up to date on how we are doing and encourage us to do good on our homework's and test to pass his class.

Michael Joyce was one of the most coherent math teachers I have ever had. I was able to understand each chapter that we went through successfully.

He's funny and tries to relate to his students
He's a really interesting Math professor, it's never really boring at all in his classroom.

Yes, I do recommend Joyce to other students because he has time for his students.
I would recommend students, especially introductory Math 100 students, to take Michael Joyce's class because it was very clear and concise. He is a very straightforward teacher that doesn't overwhelm you with heaps of work or unknown math terms.

emailed a lot about concerns, questions
He would send out regular emails enforcing students of the exams, how well the overall class did, what to expect from the test, and what we needed to do to improve.
Reminding us every time we had a test and checking if we had done the homework to we didn't fall behind.
When having to adjust my testing center I was able to do it without any hassle

This course worked well for me for the sole purpose that I have a busy schedule and it allowed me the flexibility of being able to work when I needed to. I would not recommend this to someone who is not disciplined, does not work well on their own, and is not a very independent learned.

doesnt really email anyone back promptly, seemed very detached from the students and the material being covered.
Because this is an online course I didn't feel a connection with the instructor, but I did appreciate the reminder emails that included tips and recommendations for studying. It seemed like whenever a student had a question, we got a quick response but it did come off rude at times. I understand that it can be frustrating for an instructor when a student asks a question that was answered already in the syllabus, but I don't feel like they deserve a "didn't you check the syllabus" kind of response.

I don't know Michael Joyce personally because this is an online course, which is why a lot of my answers are "neutral" and "agree". The class is easy to follow if you follow the syllabus and utilize your time wisely.

no, all he did was use an online math course for this class, pretty much made us pay for that and made us learn ourselves using the math program.
I definitely would recommend this course to other students only if they have experience with online classes. It gets difficult to stay motivated and on top of things when there is no teacher right in front of you. It is also hard to stay committed when you don't build relationships with the instructor and fellow classmates. I really enjoyed the simplicity of this course, homework assignments and tests were easy to follow along with. There weren't any tricky parts about this course where I would easily fall off track, it was homework and then test and repeat throughout the semester.

Mr. Joyce showed concern by showing students in class how to do the problems step by step and thoroughly explained each detail.
He does his best to make sure we all know the material as well as offering help outside of class and answering questions in class.

He showed his concern for his students by pointing out flaws in the homework or exams, but doesn't call out people by their names unless he was confident that said student could handle the criticism. It's not that he wants to embarrass the student, but doesn't want the entire class making the same mistake. He also graded the homework fairly. If he didn't think he had enough time to specify the EXACT details of how a certain problem should be solved, then he doesn't grade EXTREMELY hard on the problems that coincide.

Although I questioned his methods of grading, attendance, and teaching in the beginning of the year (in my head), I have to say that this was the first math class that I've ever had to take vigorous notes and actually ask classmates for help for. This was a NEEDED experience in my schooling and I hope that he does the same for ALL math classes. I do hope that he continues to teach trig because it's one of the make-or-break classes for future mathematicians. He was a great teacher.

I would recommend Michael Joyce to students who can learn independently and would like to hone their note-taking and studying skills. He doesn't give any study guides for tests and fair homework. I would recommend Michael Joyce to students that can handle themselves in hard classes.

Although I hate spouting nonsense and try to refrain from the stuck-up brown- nosing, I honestly think this guy is a great teacher. Also, as he has said in too many classes in too many ways, the book is definitely crap in teaching trig. Change it, please. The fate of future engineers rest in the hands of this crap textbook.

He understood that everyone has families and outside lives as well, although at the same time, no matter what our circumstances were he was going to help us all get through this class.
Michael Joyce showed concern for students by making sure we understood the different sections of whatever chapter we were working on. He also used examples of his on besides the ones that were given and he also showed us the common mistakes to watch for.
Professor Joyce is always willing to help his students. He does this by reminding us several times throughout the semester about his office hours and the SI sessions hosted by our SI leader. Sometimes, after his lectures, he would allow students to go up to him and ask questions about whatever he went over. For me, I haven't really felt the need to seek that extra help, but if I did, I know it would be readily available.

Yes, I would recommend Michael Joyce to other students. He has awesome teaching skills.
I would recommend Professor Joyce to other students because he is a fun teacher who connects with his students. He knows the subject (MATH 100) well and the overall structure of the course makes it seem like he knows what he's doing. Sometimes, he talks about his life experiences and things completely unrelated to math, but hey, who wants to go to class every day listening to a guy talk about only math for a whole 75 minutes? That's what makes him personable and not boring.

He's a bit rambly, but it's pretty funny to watch. It's helpful when you're doing something so utterly tedious and useless like the truth tables, and then he'll break off into a tangent like an oracle who's been fed 5 shots of espresso. It gives us a break, make us laugh, then we go back to the material in good time.
28. Other comments:
I felt that the whole structure and set up of this course was well organized. Just like many other WCC math classes, I liked how it was kind of a hybrid in the sense that it was partially online and in person. The online part made it easier to get instant feedback on homework assignments, while the in person part allowed for lectures and notes. Speaking of the lectures, there wasn't really any need for the textbook because all the material we had to learn were in the notes that he went over in class. My main concern with this class was the opportunity to boost up my grade, whether it be with extra credit or a different grading system. I feel that there should be more to the grades, rather than just the exams and homework assignments. I would recommend an attendance grade and maybe a few quizzes here and there. That way, going to class every day would feel more mandatory. Right now, I feel like grades depend heavily on how well you do on exams so there's no room to bounce back from a bad test. Whatever grade I get on my final will either raise my overall semester grade a letter higher or drop it a couple letters lower. In other words, it leaves little room for error. Don't get me wrong though, the overall quality of this class was good and if I ever had to take another math class in the future, I would probably take it with Professor Joyce again.

Mike is a great teacher. His enthusiasm and laid-back approach makes learning the work material easy.
Mike makes class time bearable, even enjoyable sometimes by relating to the students and putting himself in our shoes. It's almost as if he's enrolled in the class with us and is helping us along. I also really appreciate the fact that he does many examples in class as it allows me to have all the information I need to do homework and study.

I enjoy the transparentness about real life.
He is extremely bright and may be a little misunderstood at WCC because he teaches out of the box. I love that he is still a student and that he understands our work load and life in school. He understands that most of us are working and putting ourselves through college, and because he also did so he is compassionate about making sure we have what we need.
I think his test reviews could be a little bit more helpful, he should suck it up and learn to use the calculator, and even though his ramblings are interesting, he repeats them a little too much. I think he's funny and sarcasm doesn't bother me, so I liked his class, but I know a couple people who thought he was a little too negative.
He is a funny egotystical teacher but i grew up with people like him and it's hilarious. There will also be one person that probably dislikes him but that makes for healthy debate. He is a great funny teacher.
My first impression of him was that he was an arrogant, opinionated ass. However, after a while, he grew on me, like a fungus. He does not "spoon-feed" information or "baby" students like some other teachers but rather, promotes the student's responsibility to learn.

He did, but is a computer based clases, and is hard to keep up with every student.
To stay calm and relax when talking test. If you don't pass the test he always go over it with you, so you have a better chance next time.
He made sure that we knew the deadlines for certain tests. If we were struggling with something he would help us.

no I wouldn't recommend micheal joyce to other students because he doesn't seem instrested in his students and helping them with their work. all he does is sit at his desk on his labtop instead of getting up and walking around to check how his students with their work. he sent a email saying how we should just show up to class and we should able to pass even if we have legit excuse to being late, he doesn't want to hear "made up excuses" why some of us don't come to class, that it showed he didn't really care about helping us. he relies more on his s.i then himself.

He always lets us know that we can ask him anything, even though our course is basically all online, he does take the time to help us out whenever we need it. he is easy to talk to and understand, and he has greatly helped me get used to math again, since it has been a few years since I used it. He was more than just a Math teacher, Mike would give us pointers about going through college, how to get through it successfully, and his Math knowledge was excellent. If we were stressed out, he'd lighten the mood and get away from the math a minute to get our heads straight again. Great teacher, and very funny!

He is very knowledgable in math and was able to demonstrate that well.
He is whimsical and funny. While math may be a boring subject, he makes it bearable. He is really intelligent and knows the material very well. He helps give short cuts and tips to better our understanding and helps us review for exams and tests. He tries to help us pass while teaching us everything we need to know.

Try to make it more simple because I thought some of the work was very confusing and complicated.
No online homework - it is not a good tool and the majority of people do not actually do the work, it is easy to fake your way through the questions Shorten the test - our class was 50mins long and we barely got through 5examples each day, why then were the tests 3x's as long. I do math quick and both exams I had at least one question I did not have time to get to and I did not check over most of the test. My complaints are against the structure of the class
Go faster the first couple weeks, then take a little bit more time once you reach factoring polynomials and finding real and imaginary roots so you have more time for logs at the end.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He would tell us straight like it is, if you don't come to class you're hurting yourself. He was up front on what you should do to get by in college, and what you shouldn't do, and brought his own experiences into it. He really wanted us to succeed and learn the material that we were covering! Great at explaining difficult Math theorys!
He offered help, but thats during outside of class.
He answered questions in class and gave examples to help students.
He helps us out by providing information about the test and telling us how to do certain problems. He'll stop the lecture to explain something if a student doesn't understand. He'll lend you pencils if you forgot them ^^

He made himself available during his office hours.
no. the worst teacher I ever had. he didn't even care about the subject he was teaching. I wish I never took his class. I hate math now. and his stupid Canadian accent.
Asking him 1-1 questions is easy because he is very approachable wand ready to answer.
He tried to the best of his abilities to help them anyway he could and had long office hours
He allows us to ask questions and he tries to answer them the best he can.
He made himself available to answer any questions or concerns that we may have had.
Mr. Joyce is very tuned into his students. He can tell if we are following his explanation. It seems like every time I get lost, he takes a minute to rethink things and tries to explain the material in a different way.

His teaching was hard to follow. Going through the homework, I've noticed a lot was not covered during class. Lessons were extremely quick, not giving myself time to understand new material.

He knows his subject matter and tries to explain ti to the class. How when he has his test makes the class difficult. I struggled with finishing one chapter then doing half of another chapter, then testing us on the previously finished chapter. I don't clearly remember or have the time to focus and understand on both chapters at the same time.
I really wish he printed handouts or his lectures. I feel like it would allow me to be more organized and to utilize my notes more effectively.

No. It was a difficult class mainly because in class lectures sometimes didn't help and you would have to teach yourself. Procedure were not clearly explained and it was like I didn't have to go to class because I would teach myself anyway.

He answered any questions students had. He was always making sure students were completing their book work modules and getting tests done in time.
This was a different type of experience for me. Although informed on how the class would be, you don't know what to expect till you actually are engaged in it. Honestly the first few weeks, not all students had the workbooks, and that was a difficult process. Our instructor is very knowledgeable, this class doesn't allow for that skill to come about fully. Mike Joyce is exceptional in his field and having taken a traditional math course with him I do believe I would have done a lot better. But this is the choice I have given I work full time and am only able to attend school at night.

He is really good at explaining math in a way that makes sense to the student.

Yes. I had not issues. It was a self-guided on line class so I just needed a teacher who could explain things to me when I'm lost. And thats just what he did.

This class was too fast to keep up with. Mr. Joyce knows his subject matter so well that sometimes it was over our heads. But its our fault for not asking questions at times.
Probably the best Math teach I've come across so far in College and this is my fourth semester here.

He makes sure that we all understand multiple ways to solve each equations. He also emphasizes the easiest or fastest way to solve each equation too.
Michael Joyce shows concern for students by making us think and work harder and understand what taking college level learning classes really expects from us. Being the math-geek math major that he is, Mike stood up for his students and geared our Math 103 to fit our learning capabilities. And finally, when Michael Joyce grades my tests he gave me points for parts of the math problems and added those points up, where as other professors take points away for incorrectness and adds those up and subtracts it from the total possible. How brilliant !!
He will make sure we understand the material being taught.
Gave us good pointers to helping us study smart.
He would tell us that if we needed help with an assignment he'd be more than willing to assist as well as providing us with a lot of alternatives should our time not allow for such meetings. He did not hunt students down one-by- one (as we ARE in collage and not Elementary) but he'd give the class notes to the students incase we wanted copies.
N/A Mike was more interested in telling us about his personal life experiences (which did not relate to math) than teaching us. He referred often to how this job is an "easy gig" with quick money. He did not show genuine concern for students' retaining that material; he often told us it was not important to understand "why" but rather "just memorize the formula." He would do five-ten problems on note book paper for us and give no room for questions or participation. Class was let out early 50% of the semester.
He repeatedly told the class to come to his office after class if we had any problems or questions with math.
Helped us through the semester showing care and concern (in a different way that some students may think is snobby) but was well concerned for our education and our future. Gave us a lot of great examples.
He tells us exactly how we are doing in the subject course and encourages student to see him after class hour to help with subject problems.
26. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He has an ability to sense when he is going too fast. It always seems like when he gets over my head, he repeats the last thing he was doing slower and using different language.
An hour and fifteen minutes three times a week just seem to blast right by. Getting to school at 8:30 am and going to the math lab until class at 11:30 every M-W-F, is what it took just to barely pass. Michael Joyce is a good instructor in that sense that he let me know flat out that college is accelerated learning most of it done out of class on our own. MJ really kept me on my toes and well informed with the real world and his perspective. MJ made it easy to show up to class as much as I could, because he was easy to look at and listen to.
Mike Joyce is a excellent Math instuctor.
I liked how aware he was of the way math classes worked, like how 75 minutes of math was understandably difficult, so he'd take small breaks in lecture to tell us stories. That he was aware and even earnest to help us with that is a good deed I think more teachers should consider doing.
I personally do not believe Mike cares about the students and mission of Windward Community College.
He understands the students well. He knows that math is a hard subject and is willing to go the extra mile to help us.
Never go with first impressions. When you walk into the classroom first hand you may think this person is moving to fast. You will find out that what his beliefs are make sense.
I feel that Joyce is more of a lecture teacher. He could during class, make sure everyone understands the material before proceeding with the next chapter. I could ask questions in class but i'd feel like a disruption. And if it weren't for my busy schedule, I'd come see him after class.

Yes I would recomment Michael Joyce to other students. One day three of us were working on homework at the math lab before class and one student went to Michael Joyce's office to ask a question about one of the problems we had encountered. They came back with the problem completely worked out on a separate piece of paper like an answer key. I told them that Michael Joyce's teaching approach was like tossing rocks. He tosses five to seven rocks at a time because that's what the deal is. MJ doesn't toss more than he would expect us to catch and he does so with care. MJ really is an attractive example of being a grad student and instructor.

Definitely! The grading was fair in that it was not sugar coated and the instruction was thorough and easy to follow. There were lots of opportunities he'd offer for assistance and I know that that's a thing some students would love to have (depending on how well they handle math).
No. I understand and expect college level math to be challenging, but, Mike made the class truly harder than it needed to be by his lack of involvement and care.

Mike Joyce knows what he is talking about when it comes to math.
Math is a sore subject for many people and I think that having a teacher who is more than aware of this really helped make the semester tolerable.
I would hope that the Math Dept takes these comments seriously and reevaluates Mike's position as an instructor in the future. At the very least his classes should be audited by a senior member of the department so they can see first hand how he runs his class.
I would have had a much better impression of him if he had not always been complaining about not having enough time when he a spent a fair amount of class time telling stories and complaining about the US. If not for the ten or so wasted Minutes each class, we would have been able to cover all the material.

He makes sure to explain problems thoroughly so that students can understand and he shows us different methods to figuring out the problem, while highlighting the best method as well as what NOT to do! He is a great teacher and is always there to help us with our math as well as great personal college strategies! Thanks Mike for a great semester and for being so patient and understanding!
He is always reminding us of his office hours.
The straight dope essentially, you get out what you put in. If you need help he's there for you, if you refuse to seek help it's on you. Big boy rules and I respect that.
Mike always offered help during office hours and demonstrated his concerns for all student to succeed not only in math, but also the students academic career. He is great at encouraging you during times when students begin to drop like flies losing the stamina needed to push through the tail end of the semester. He reminds you that in order to succeed one must do all homework as well as come to class.
He lets us have his notes after class so we can make copies and I'm always able to find him in his office when he says he'll be there. He goes over our tests and some days he'll have class time so we can ask him questions.
Mr. Joyce shows concern for his students by allowing questions to be brought up in class and outside of class. He is always ready to answer a question.
He could tell if you had a confused look on your face and he would stop talking and ask what the problem was. He would then go back and clearly explain whatever it was that was unclear to you.

Joyce did a good job making the materiel less daunting for students. I remember being somewhat intimidated by the material initially, but he made it all very clear for me. Great teacher overall.

25. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Michael took the time to explain the subject matter, and made sure to emphasize that he is available to help the students. In addition he also pointed out that they could use the Math Lab for help with homework.
He does reviews before the test and that is always helpful especially in math.
He is always available when needed.
If there was a problem that students didn't understand, he went over it to explain it better. i.e.-homework problems

Mike always allowed time for questions and was available after class for extra help. He was willing to help students on a one-on-one basis.

26. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
he is very to the point and has awesom short cuts that arent in the book and they always make it easier.
Michael not only taught the class and covered the subject matter, but he kept the mood light and enjoyable. While showing examples he did the problems in front of the students and sometimes making mistakes. I think this is a good thing as the students can understand that even the professors make these mistakes and helps to make the students aware that they could happen.
He knows his math.... but his handwriting is horrible!
He knows his subject and teaches it well. It's up to the student to make the effort and learn the material taught.

he is a funny guy, makes you laugh in class with some of his stories which is nice because math is generally a boring subject.
he is an extremely good teacher and treat you as a college student instead of a high school student. i might not of done as well as i liked to but he also showed me how to be a better college student and i greatly apreciate it
I really enjoyed being in Mike's class. His teaching style put me at ease with Math. I did not feel intimidated by the subject or feel as if I could not do the work.
He definitely rambles about Canada and himself way too much. I wish he would've focused more on the math than his personal life.

Yes I would recommend Michael to other students as I think he class is enjoyable and the subject matter is clearly explained to the students.

I would recommend Mike's class because he can relate to the students, he is easy-going, and his teaching style is refreshing.
No, because I didn't enjoy taking math from him. I just got stuck with him because I registered too late to get Akatsuka. Joyce, can be confusing at times when he's trying to go over what's going to be on the exam, he says certain problems are going to be on there and I study to prepare for them and then there's definitely harder questions that even my tutor said were way more difficult than the one's on the practice test. I just found him frustrating at times.
28. Other comments:
tests are only 10 questions so you basically have to get all the questions right because just missing one makes your grade go down 10% so the tests should be longer with more of the material and just a little easier.

He told us to come to his office if we needed help.
He offers help,teaches fast but makes time for students to see him
He often says" I don't really care" you do what you want. I think the students could be better encouraged if they at least felt like he wanted us to succeed in the class.

He adjusts to the class, for instance, he won't move on to the next lesson if the class doesn't understand the current lesson. He makes sure that we are very prepared for the tests...

More than willing to help with problems outside of class. Gives you plenty of opportunities to make sure you understand the material and ask question if you don't.

A good teacher, but it is difficult to see what he is writing, and I think it would be better to use the board rather than the projector, because he often turns the page before I have finished copying down the whole problem.
Arrogant, but doesn't interfere with his teaching. Always willing to admit he's wrong if he is. Happened a few times.

I think he is a very effective math 25 teacher. i learned more math than i have ever learned in any other math class. he made me much more confident in my math skills. he inspired me to believe that I really could be successful in passing and understanding math. i think he is an excellent teacher...
i think u need to slow down when u teach...... i found myself teaching myself most of the time and then missing homework to learn things on my own
I learned a lot, and it was a good progression for me because every lesson connected to each other, which made it really easy for me. WORD OF ADVICE: The solutions manual helped me a lot in math 25, because I could figure out and understand the process more and to see what mistakes I have made. It really helped me get A's on all the exams. For Math 103, I hope there will be a student manual, because it is a huge help for me, because I know how to use it.

Mike makes homework due dates and test retake deadlines very clear. Grades and returns homework by next class, and posts test grades that day. He emails you all the information about upcoming classes or changes that have been made, good communication.
