7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
i believe the most valuable aspects of the course were the film/documentaries. the class discussions were also very significant to me.
Great class discussions.
I was surprised to find how much I really liked all of the films we watched in this class. I knew we were going to watch documentaries, but I didn't realize how many really interesting documentaries there were out there. I also thought it was effective how, instead of analyzing a film on it's own, we compared 2 or more of them together. They were all seemingly different, but it was interesting to analyze and discuss how everything is interconnected. Learning about future studies was very cool too. Other polisci classes tend to relate the present only to the past, but John taught us that forecasting different outcomes for the future can greatly help us improve on current issues. I also appreciated that this was a more discussion heavy class, rather than focusing mainly on independent reading/writing, because it really helped me see many different perspectives on everything we were learning. Having the class use twitter and google+ was also valuable. I enjoyed reading the articles that John woud post for us to read.
All the videos we viewed for this course were all very interesting and educational. I personally gained a whole lot of information from these films. It also really helped that our instructor was very interested in all the material so it was helpful to hear his input on things.
The most valuable aspects of this Political Science course were the interaction and engagement that Professor Sweeney had with the class and his method of teaching through various demonstrations of media and politics were very intriguing. Ultimately, Professor Sweeney's class was very interesting and definitely caught my attention. A+
I enjoyed watching the films presented and then discussing the ways in which the creators of said films were attempting to influence the positions of viewers. In-class discussion also provided quite a bit of valuable information and insight from other perspectives.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
i do not really have anything that i did not like about the class -great job sir, see you in the water.
Everything was valuable. I really enjoyed this course. John always asked us for feedback about how we felt about the class so far and he would ask us what we were interested in learning.
A lot of us weren't very talkative; I feel like if students actually participated more, it would have called for very interesting discussions based on the material we covered in class. It definitely wouldn't hurt to add more assignments, like a one page response after a film/presentation or even writing down questions from the assigned readings. But then again, it's summer so it was definitely nice to have a more relaxed class!
N/A
I would have preferred to watch the films at home, if only because the course felt very short and having more time in-class for discussion and examination of the films would've been fun.

He knew his subject well. Very good articles/websites that were given in learning this course. He seems like a humble, generous, and patient professor.
Great teacher
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would like to see a more scheduled timeline for discussion postings so that students can plan their weeks appropriately.
No,changes needed. He's a fantastic professor :)
none, keep it up
I guess when giving assignments on the syllabus, to be more specific on his expectations. But he clarifies it later on. Other than that, he's a pretty cool Professor.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He was very understanding when dealing with laulima misunderstandings and thoughtful in emails and postings.

This class was entertaining and easily graded, I will definitely be recommending it to others.
Absolutely, FANTASTIC professor and offers a FUN class!
definitely! because he made religion real and enjoyable
Yes, to those who had English 100 or above. The work assignments had a lot of English formats (composition writing) that had to be done a specific manner. For a person who's below English 100, they might face some challenging times.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I would have liked to have taken his class in person if I had known how great it was going to be!
mahalo for a great class and the opportunity for service learning at kcc

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
he was a very understandable and creative teacher using various types of assignments to relate the material in a unique way. he made learning a very old controversy and created a safe environment to express thought and reason
John's major strengths were keeping a great atmosphere and keeping us all up during a 7:45am class. He's a funny teacher as well. He also knows how to make teaching fun.
he was approachable and easy to learn from, making the learning environment enjoyable.
He'll explain if you have a question and he is really laid back
Prompt to class Used full period of time effectively Allowed students to express their ideas
He isn't boring so you can actually learn from it. He makes you think and answer small things where you cant really be wrong, but it just helps you stay on the same page. Small jokes here and there to keep it from getting monotone.
can relate to students well, makes class interesting
Overall, he was a great professor who balanced all aspects of the course.
He keeps the class exciting when he is teaching. Everything He teaches us is on the test so it was great to have a teacher that actually taught me when was on my tests. He is one of my best teachers I have ever had.
He knows his stuff
He is good at keeping to the course syllabus.
He knew the subject area really well. He also was entertaining at 7:45 in the morning.
He knows what he is talking about and how to go about on teaching religion.
He is very open to opinions students have, and very easy to talk to. He is very knowledgeable and it seems that he likes to teach!
New what he was talking about and had a lot of information.
He explained things well and knew what he was talking about.
Really good at getting class to think "outside the box", awesome at encouraging participation; makes you feel there is no wrong answer. Makes class comfortable, fun to learn.
He knows how to keep peoples attention. Ive never experienced a BORING class. I always look forward to going.
His knowledge and wit makes learning about religion much more relaxed.
He makes it entertaining.
The subject was clear and up front. Mr.Sweeney went into depth into the subject of every religion subject we went over.
He knows how to make the lectures interesting and finds ways to catch our attention. He also goes into detail with a lot of the material he is covering so that we understand what he is teaching.
He's very passionate about the subject and class was really entertaining. He had very creative, unconventional and fun ways of teaching. Also, a 3 hour class would normally go by really slow, but this class was so fun and interesting that it went by quickly.
I like his method of teaching, he always keep the class participation going. Its a long early class for some of us and he makes it fun by the way he teaches in getting us involved in class discussions.
He knew what he was talking about. He wasn't vague. I like his teaching style when it comes to his power points being connected with his lecture.
Humor
Giving us notes on our tests (exams). He makes references on current media culture as well as past cultures. He presents himself very greatly by setting up all the power points and explaining each topic to an understanding manner.
He's entertaining. Keeps things interesting.
Great speaker.
Very organized with his presentation. In addition, I liked how he connected with the students whether it was trough music or showing various video clips.
knows alot about what he teaches
Mr. Sweeney's sense of humor makes an otherwise potentially dull subject really fun to learn. His presentations were well organized, and his assignments made almost guaranteed class participation and discussion.
He made own power point for us. It was very interesting and useful.
He is very engaging during his lecture. He uses great examples and incorporates a lot of pop culture to better relate topics to students. He made every subject interesting and enjoyable which is why I never missed a class.
His ability to explain something clearly using interesting examples...
Making students think. Asking students question so everyone is always trying to come up with another question or an answer. Presenting. Mr. Sweeney knew the lessons and taught with confidence.
He was funny and straight to the point
He always enthusiasm every time. Always active, being on time he is repectful.
Mr.John Sweeney is a grade A teacher. One of the best teachers I've ever had.Really makes religion class understandable with a modern day twist.
He is able to level with the students and make learning the subject very fun.
He made sure that we understood using examples.
knows subject very well.
His major strengths are: having organized lectures, explaining topics when students don't get them and being able to relate the material
John makes the classes very interesting. I enjoy they way he teaches because is it very fun :)
Mr. Sweeney knew his subject well and made it interesting for us to learn. It wasn't just the same boring lectures we'd here all day but he added videos, music, and pictures to make learning more interesting.
He was able to explain the areas covered in away that was exciting and interesting. He utilized videos and occasionally pop culture references to educate us,and was able to make all thematerial understandable.
communicating to the students
He does a very good job interacting with the students. Makes it easier go understand the subject matter.
It was easy to see that he was really interested in the subject he was teaching, which makes it easy to stay in tune with the class. His lectures are done with enthusiasm and humor, making them fun, simple to follow, and simple to understand. He uses very good analogies, and the videos used were explained very clearly, making the class seem very real and relative in the world today.
he made the class fun and interesting and i was able to retain information a lot better and easier
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would add more south park videos that incorporates the material covered in class.
I really don't have any changes for him, maybe just explain the test more the first time so we won't get confused again.
none
To slow down when you lecturing
Answer emails Avoid changing assignment dates - it encourages laziness
Teach more religion courses at different times, 745am was a bit too early for me.
I don't have a suggestions to him.
nothing this course is good
The use of his online videos to the course content did not seem relevant sometimes. Find better examples.
I can not think of any changes.

I would only say that he should talk about native American religions, they seem very interesting.
None
Put more videos in the powerpoints so it's more intriguing.
No changes please, I feel other students can really benefit from the way things already are

Kind of, sort of, slow down in speaking. I was able to catch up, but not all the time.

No changes but I do think that he should ask if anyone has any questions or comments during the presentation. Although I know he is pressed for time since the class is only once a week and there is a lot to cover.
nothing, very good professor

I wanted to change slide more slowly
Maybe uploading the teacher's lecture notes onto Laulima as well. It wasn't always very reliable depending on others to do it.
Maybe add more videos to his slides.

I would not change anything.
None.

None
Sometimes when he asked questions to the class, it was difficult to understand what answers he was looking for. Maybe they could have been asked a bit more clear.
none. maybe just to not lecture so much
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He goes though the material slowly and constantly making sure everyone has questions or understands what is going on.
He showed concern by asking how everyone's weekend was. He also showed his concerened towards me when i told him how I was sick and didnt come to class. He asked if everything was okay and he told mee to get well.
he answered questions whenever needed.
He talked to you after class and responded to every e mail. He wasnt one of those professors that said, you missed it, not my problem. He tried to help you figure out the best way to get a good grade.
He was very up to date with ongoing (religious) events and informed us about a lot of them.
When I emailed him about not being in class he would email me back. Each student has to take notes or do a status update on laulima so he makes sure that we are all paying attention.
he gave extra credit
He was willing to meet after class and is very quick to response on the emails.
He was willing to answer any questions we had. He also understood what it is like to be a student.
Gave extra credit, take attendance
He was always concerned with how we felt on the material presented. Our opinions were not taken lightly.
He is offering extra credit for doing this survey and he always ask for feedback about assignment due dates and such.
There were many extra credit opportunities, and he made sure we did good on tests because he gave us a study guide that had everything that would be on the test.
Always available to answer questions; via emails, office hrs, class time
He would encourage people to speak during class, always was easy going on due dates and is always available through email and office hours.
By being available for students through Laulima as well as after class.
Gave extra credits.
He treat you as an equal, like student to student
always making sure we are following along with him and if we need anything, he does the best that he can to help us.
He sent an e-mail at the end of the semester to let students know if they needed to raise their grade, tried to arrange a temple tour for students who were interested and gave plenty of time to do assignments.
He always make sure that we have our assignments done and he give chances to those who needed more time to get their class work in.
He allowed us to come up to him whenever we had any concerns. Also responded to emails.
Addressing if any essays were done incorrectly and emailing for a revise.
extra credit and encouraging us to do the best on the test with studyguides we didnt have to make ourselves
by encouraging us to participate
Extremely prompt responses on the emails, even with last minute issues.
He was talking interesting story about religioin
Besides interacting a lot with students in class, he communicated with us via email. He offered extra credit opportunities as well as styaing up to date with grades.
Always seem to give out second chances..Post-pone due dates for assignments..extra credit assignments.
Telling students of his office hours. Asking if there were any questions or concerns.
He gave us more time if we needed it
to understand about what religions really means, he also that know that everyone in our class is different. Every one in the class has different thinking about what others think about the teaching of religions:)
Mr.Sweeney always encourages students to participate without putting pressure on anyone.Always checking if the class was clear by asking if we had questions.
He would often ask if there are questions and would encourage discussions.
Status updates to see how we were following along.
he didnt really but is course is pretty simple that its hard to fail his course.
he helped you when you asked for it
John would always ask and tell us that if we needed help to let him know! he was understanding and out going to everyone. He was fair to students too.
He had one student per class posts notes on Laulima, so that when we do our exams, we had our notes and the other people's notes to refer to. He also had one student per class do a stauts update, where they could write their comments and questions.
Always made sure e understood the materials through questions and examples.
He let us know he was available if ever needed.
he emailed promptly and gave suggestions and was very active in using laulima

Loved his sense of humor! He really challenges students to think about the subject material.
I was very interesting about your class. Especialy, I like pictures and movies in your power point. And also, I like your talking about religion.
He's the nicest person as well as teacher, so I believe that even the most shy students would become interactive and engaged in his class.

16. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He was able to explain the concepts well. He made the class fun and interesting. He was also able to answer the questions asked during class discussion.
the instructor's strengths as a teacher was that he was cool and not a mean teacher. his teaching style is the best by far in learning the topic that we are learning.
His approach and style was very good towards learning. He incorporated videos, guest speakers, powerpoints, etc. Very funny.
explaning BY COMPARING
Teaching concept and applying to real life situation.
The instructor made the class interesting with videos and audio. Knew the subject well. He approaches the subject matter in a way that is relevant to current events, pop-culture and audience understanding. Exemplifies a genuine passion and interest in the subject
- utilized well researched material for lectures; ie. literature, news/current events, images - used a wide variety of media, including images, video, music, props - communicated information in ways that were interesting and engaging - presented content that was relevant and challenging to audience - humorous and interesting to listen to - took extra time to respond to questions that could not be covered in class time - encouraged student participation and discussion
Master Piooner of power point.
He has interesting teaching methods, and has a great sense of humor, which made the class more bearable to be in.
Knows subject area very well, is very poised and composed, even in heated discussions. Articulate. Unbiased.
I liked the way he took modern videos, music, etc... and incorporated them into his lectures. His lecture style kept me interested thrpugh out the semester.
He can listen to others beliefs and not judge. He listens to everybody and tries to make sense of what they are trying to get at. He tries to get people involved in debates.
He gave us good examples to help us understand what he was trying to teach us. For examples, he used cartoons, humor, and articles related to the subject.
Understanding his material, & breaking it down to bits where we as students could comprehend and remember for tests.
Kept class interesting with power point presentations
LOUD, FRIENDLY, TEACHES WELL
He's young and knew how to reach a younger audience. His way of teaching was fresh and not boring.
Gave easy extra credit.
He is very good at making sure that all of his students are paying attention and making sure that we understand the material.
he is a very good and clear speaker.
well versed in the use of powerpoint and conducting the class with it.
able to relate to students, able to use present day issues to relate to things in the past, aware of current issues around the world, fluent in more than one subject
Fun, exciting, very good with words, very good articulation. Has a way of speaking that makes you want to listen and participate, and has the sense of humor to go along with his style of teaching. Not too funny where it's distracting, but not like, trying to hard where he looks idiotic. Knows his subject matter, and how to project it in a way that students will enjoy it.
He is a good speaker and treats the students as equals. He encourages participation and makes class interesting.
very down to earth, controled the class at all times and was able to turn what could quite possible be the most boring subject into my favorite class.
You could tell he really enjoyed what he was doing and teaching it to the students.
John has the coolest videos in class related to religion. He is also well organized.
His passion for the subject and political correctness for teaching a sensitive subject. He was fair with his information of religions and never put his own preferences into our learning. His powerpoints were always well organized, interesting to look at, and his integration with contemporary media (ie youtube, movies, photos, etc.) really kept the class interesting.
Confident.. Firm to his teaching..
The teacher was clarity on information, friendly, fun.
Encourages group discussions to more in-dept learning the course materials.
John Sweeney had the ability to make religion interesting.
He now only know what he is talking about, but also made it a fun and interesting to learn about religion. This is one of the classes that I actually couldn't wait to attend.
He presents the subject matter in a fun, practical and entertaining manner. He deals with heavy subjects in a light, almost comedic way. Greatly entertaining.
He explains clearly each religion and made us think what's going on based on religious perspectives clearly and deeply. I can recommend my friends to take his class because everyone can learn a lot from his lecture.
He is a very good speaker and relates the material to where we can really understand it.
Mr. Sweeney is a great teacher, this class was my favorite class for my first semester in college. His strength was his way of teaching, I loved watching the different videos that portray religion, and every video was not boring or dragging.
He is able to incorporate his specific topic, and span it in a very worldly perspective; you find yourself open to so many options for learning. He is also able to use examples and stories to help better understand the material.
The instructor really knew the subject he was teaching, he makes it interesting with movies and youtube videos, plus the class has group activities and the instructor makes the class fun and very creative.
knowledge about the course and making sure that everyone was on the same page, making things interesting

none. very good teacher.

- tell more personal stories - more interactive group work, such as the futures assignment and the hands activity - more opportunity for student presentations or discussion forums in class; equal platform for students to share/contribute - especially those who are not inclined to be vocal
Nothing really, all is good in the A'ina.
Nothing in particular. Just to keep doing what he's doing.

19. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He gave study guides for the exam and he offered extra credit opportunities.
the instructor didnt show that much concern for the student because a lot of the students were doing great in their work.
answered questions when asked.
extra credit.
Told us whenever assignments were due. He had students write any questions or remarks they had down and he would read and answer the questions in class.
- answered questions during class or during office hours - well prepared presentation - genuine interest in the course content - genuine interest in students' learning experience
By answering questions quickly and clearly also giving other students to put in their two cents into the topic descusion.
He'd always send us emails before test, etc.
communication
He allowed time for us to ask questions, either in class or anonymously.
He let you know when something was due. He asked if we have problems then to let him know.
He made meetings with people who were on the verge of failing and gave extra credit to those who wanted to take it.
He always encouraged us to speak up if we had any concerns about what we were learing, or if we just wanted to ask questions. He also allowed us to email him if we thought it was more personal, replies in a promts manner.
By checking in with the class to see how we were doing
NOTES ON LAULIMA
He didn't.
i think slecting random person for posting notes was avery good way to make sure everyone is participating.
responsive with questions.
arrainging an excursion outside of class to assit students with their assignment
Always gave ideas and ways to try and improve our grades.
He asks for student feedback and actively listens.
he provided opportunities for extra credit by giving us opportunities to go out and experience religious sites and was always there to answer questions after class.
Yes, he would answer any of the questions we had in a way we could all understand.
He is always available after class to ask questions.
He always encouraged our shy class to particpate. He asked if we had questions on anything before we moved on and he was always prompt to class.
Reminded them of their work in class.
He said we could come see him anytime during office hours if we had questions.
By have class discussions.
John showed concern for his students by listening actively.
He made sure that he address any concerns that I had.
He asked questions and was always free to talk after class.
Yes. He listens well what students say. And he concerns about perticipation of the entire class by posting class note at laulima.
He is always asking questions if we understand the material. He really shows that he wants us to learn.
For me, when i missed an exam, he talked to me on the side and help me take an alternate test that was half the points.
He gave students the opportunity to come see him after class and establishing an online basis to contact. He used the students as a means of helping others students through his note taking process.
The instructor informs students to email or make an appointment to see him. Plus starting of the class, we have class discussions of any concern or any question.
Not so much

He made the subject fun and interesting with the different uses of media to teach us the subject. When asking some questions to include class participation, it sometimes ended up into students having a short debate over it, pretty funny. :)
thank you. your powerpoint presentations and resource material far exceeds any other instructor i've had at kcc. i can see the tremendous effort and thought that has gone into your lectures and presentation. you do a great job at identifying the audience's point of reference on a subject and building on their understanding from there. it was a pleasure to be in this class.
Nothing much, i learned alot from your class. thank you
I'd have to say, thanks for teaching me in a way that I could understand/connect with/remember. It was great to have such a sarcastic instructor, but not in a sense that it was damaging to a student's spirits.
Really enjoyed taking your class and hope to take more in the future.
When we didn't get to cover soem of the materals i was some what dissapointed beacause i thought that all the material that you were going to cover didn't happen. you could have said to one the students to come see u after class and can dissuse the question she had on her mind. and cause of that i was disappointed not all materal were covered.
Great class, I'm happy I had a good profeessor. I thought a religion class was going to be boring, but John found a way to make and keep it interesting.
