I enjoyed class, I liked that the class was smaller, especially since we had to do speeches. He was easy to talk to and understanding, which always helps.

I loved having Kumu Ha'a for my Hawaiian class. I wish I had taken this course sooner in my college years so I could take more of his classes, but sadly I only had him in my final semester. This Hawaiian class was way better than Haw 101 with Bobbit. Ha'a is very calm and friendly and very encouraging. He never scoffed at any of the students and we always had fun in class. Sometimes, we got a little off subject, but only because we ended up talking story (it's relevant since we are taking a "Hawaiian" class and talking story is part of the culture!). I really enjoyed his style of teaching; it was easy for me to grasp the grammar lessons. Also, he was very kind and patient with me since I missed so much classes due to travel with the University golf team.
Needs to give students more time to finish the assignments and come to class once in a while
I really enjoyed this instructor because he was always enthusiastic towards teaching the course. I definitely was able to grasp the subject material, as well as increase my knowledge in the language. I definitely recommend this course instructor to other students who will be studying at this level in the future.
I would have liked more conversing in the language. Although I think I have a thorough understanding of the structure of the language in reading and writing, I would have liked to apply it in conversations. But other than that, very understanding, patient, respectful and knowledgeable kumu. Mahalo!
Fun class! Kumu Ha'a is a great teacher! Only suggestion I have for the class is more in class activities such as, a game or in class dialogues between students to help with active verbal learning. I found the in class dialogues worked real well in hwn 101. Other than that I'd recommend kumu Ha'a to anyone interested in learning ha'i olelo.
The only downfall in this course was the lack of learning about Hawaiian culture. I feel as though it is important to learn about the culture from which you are trying to learn the language. I learned a few cultural customs here and there, but a bit more would have been nice.
The grading was slightly difficult and obscure. (.5) points could literally make the difference between getting the grade you want, which is a scary scenario in this case when it comes to quizzes and exams. Grading was kind of brutal and the tests were difficult. The words (Hawaiian and English (translations)) on tests were sometimes words we've didn't learn or cover, and if we did cover it, maybe briefly in an assignment that I suppose we were expected to "memorize," still made quizzes and tests difficult to complete at times. Missing one word, especially words we may not have covered made a big difference between an A or an F. Other than grading, loved this course over-all!
