9. What did you like best about the course?
Readings were great, but I really appreciated Elisabeth's communication skills. She always made sure to clearly state the requirements of the course, and really moderated discussions well.
The readings were great broaden my aspects with women that are affected by these illnesses.
Elisabeth is a fantastic teacher. She is fair and open to new ideas and always has a ton of energy. She also kept the discussions interesting and stepped in when she needed to. The rule about keeping away from personal experiences helped keep the class focused on the authors.
I thought that the readings were very well-selected. Each of the readings brought something new to discuss and I thought that they were varied enough so that the class remained interesting. The class covered very heavy subject matter, yet the readings allowed the class to explore their thoughts and sort through their personal feelings. I'm very happy with the selected readings!
Prof Hutchiscon (Elisabeth) is a terrific professor. Not only does she know the material like the back of her hand, but she allows us to explore the material thoroughly through such her engaging and thoughtfully planned-out course. These women were fascinating, and to be able to delve deeply and to be taken there allowed us as students to almost embody or experience these mental disorders in a real way so as to not only understand but empathize with them. Although the material initially seemed overwhelming, it became more dissectible and manageable and only further reinforced the material. I was really able to connect with the readings more this way. There was content that cut to the core (of the heart and mind--and extremely complex/layered) and required more than just superficial skimming through of the readings. To be honest, if one did not scrutinize the works, he/she might not have grasped the information thoroughly. So Elisabeth's encouragement/requirement for us to really almost obsess over the material was not only very helpful (as well as easy to do for the most part) but it only helped us perform better in class at the end of the day. I also believe that Elisabeth very specifically planned out not only the content but also the order and manner in which we were received and studied these memoirs/texts/excerpts. The youtube and audio clips as well other content/material that pertained to the readings were enjoyable as well. She provides a wealth of information and I personally loved the exposure to all of the above.
I enjoyed the unique course content--certainly amidst the most interesting courses I've taken.

11. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The readings and the intense discussions we had
The different effects these illnesses had on the women
Probably by the people. The class had an interesting mix of ideas and the teacher was honestly amazing.
As mentioned previously, I will definitely remember the readings. I will also remember doing the DSM assignments. I am not a Psychology major, so I think that this is one of the few opportunities that I may have to examine people from a "psychology perspective." I found the DSM assignments to be effective but also knowledge-boosting. I feel like I have an even greater understanding of these disorders than before!
Based on what I absorbed from this course, I have an even greater respect and admiration for women--strong women especially. I embrace the notion of queer theory and being able to utilize different (i.e., "other," alternative), non-"normative" versions of expression; I also consider myself to be what society refers to as a "feminist," although there are also flaws in labeling progressive women with that type of confining terminology. But that's another story, and I digress. I admire how these women were able to manage themselves and overcome in addition to embrace their mental illnesses/"disorders" and be brave enough to share their stories--whether it be solely for themselves or to edify specific audiences or a combination of both. Also, I have a huge heart for the marginalized in society, and those with mental illnesses even today in America are arguably treated as second-class citizens. We as a country have made huge strides forward, although there is still much more work to be done. And this work entails creating awareness, through which we are thereby able to address certain stigmas people might have about mental disorders. Also, at times, we need to ask ourselves exactly why some of these disorders manifested, or at the very least, how these women reacted at first versus responded positively to issues associated with these disorders, as a result of being in our society, which can oftentimes be judgmental towards certain groups. This not only pertains to women and madness but other groups/factions facing the same injustices. In other words, social equality, fair treatment of others alongside love for self, and yes...world peace :-). I loved having everyone in the class together. It has been quite enjoyable and I am glad I took the course. Thank you, Elisabeth!
The knowledge I gained about mental disease.

17. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Very structured and organized class. Goals were made clear. Everyone's opinion was respected but it was okay to disagree.
I liked how the reading and the writing requirements were greatly put together because it made the reading more understandable.
The readings, it was helpful to only have to read excerpts and not the entire book. It gave enough time to do the assignments.
I liked the readings, the DSM assignments, and the group discussions. Normally, I don't care for group discussions, but our class was fairly intelligent, so they had a lot of good input to give.
I can see why Elisabeth is a popular professor. And I am happy she is passionate about the content, these women, as well as our particular section of the class's having been offered in the classroom setting versus online (which I believe "Women & Madness" has been offered several times via online format. Regardless, everything would have "come alive,"and there were several strong reasons why I took the course to begin with. Also, the class was generally very interactive, and in a sense we were able to "let our hair down," so to speak, and really express and process how we felt and thought. It really allowed great learning to take place. It was great.

19. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
The only thing I found not so useful was the study guide. Maybe it helps for some people to list out the details of each novel, but I mostly internalize everything.
I don't think this course needs improvement because Elizabeth did a great job teaching it.
In terms of improving, this course has little to criticize. Elisabeth does an excellent job of running class and keeping things interesting.
I think that the final should be a little shorter, or the final should be assigned as one big paper, rather than a bunch of smaller papers. This, of course, may just be personal preference.
Overall, although the workload was at times a bit overwhelming, it was more than justified. This IS a 400-level course after all. Elisabeth is a tough, albeit fair, grader, and although her point system was a bit of a challenge once or twice, putting everything in perspective, I really can't complain since she outlines specifically what she wants out of us. To be honest, my having lost a point here or there was solely due to carelessness, overlooking something, or general laziness, or not having completed all the work in time--no one else's fault but mine! And at the end of the day, she always gives us TONS of opportunities for extra credit and to redeem our points.
20. Other comments:
Great class overall, I would definitely recommend it to my friends although it's a lot of work :) Changes one's outlook on mental diseases and is useful for a lot of majors including WS, PSY, ENG, and more
I remember a warning being given at the start of the session that the books could be triggering and I think that was very helpful to know. However, sometimes the real problem was more with people being insensitive to certain cases that caused people to feel uncomfortable. Elisabeth was always quick to suggest that perhaps those comments came from a misunderstanding of the illness, and that was very much appreciated.
Elisabeth is one of the best professors I've had at UH! She's extremely enthusiastic and brings a very positive energy to class. I especially how she handled when my classmates made problematic statements; Elisabeth knows how to acknowledge each person's strengths but still assert her own opinion. I am very happy that I took this class.
Again, Prof Hutchison is a tough grader but always encouraged us and there was nothing wrong with her wanting certain assignments to be completed in a specific way. She always outlined precisely what she wanted. At the same time, not only were we given the liberty to express ourselves in a very open yet respectful classroom environment, but some of the assignments rendered this freedom of expression, too, which was just awesome! And insofar as grading is concerned, Elisabeth always gave us the opportunity to make up assignments. Furthermore, she made herself available for any questions or concerns (both in person and via e-mail) and is rather expedient in getting back to us and addressing our concerns. She is also very friendly, and very fair. This course is awesome, very relevant, and I am so happy she continues to teach this course, whose premise is on point. This work needs to be done; these messages need to be conveyed; the material needs to be absorbed--especially right now more than ever.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Giving a rating of "Strongly Agree" is an understatement on how I feel Ms. Hutchison conducted the class and how she was as an instructor. Her energy, intellect, and enthusiasm to teach others is immeasurable. When she sensed that the class was not quite grasping the issue at hand, she'd break things down to make things more understandable. Her energy also was infectious, which made others in the class want to participate in discussions.
The course is highly valuable. The discussions that are held in the classes following the preparation for the case are highly valuable and clear up any confusion or discrepancies. Understanding Supreme Court justices help in understanding the basic arguments for the cases and help to understand the conversations happening between justices. The quizzes are helpful in monitoring progress along the course.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing.
Having a greater discussion aspect (as opposed to just going over homework questions) to the course would be helpful, especially with the more complex cases. There's more understanding when hearing other points of view and this allows for better opportunities to craft and defend evidence-based arguments.

19. Other comments:
I first thought this class would be easier to take if offered during the Fall or Spring semester because so much is crammed into a 6 week period, but it was pointed out that if it were offered during those times, a student would have to prioritize this class with the other classes he/she is taking. Although the class was very challenging for me, both intellectually and time wise, I found it best that it was offered during the summer where all my studies were devoted to just this one class. I would highly recommend this class to other PoliSci majors.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The class discussions promote diversity in thinking as well as allow students a safe and thoughtful environment to voice their opinions. The materials in the course was interesting and promote knowledge of the law as a important tool for everyday life. I particularly enjoy reading the cases and how to read between the lines because of how I understand the people who make the decisions and their agendas.
I liked how the entire course from the very beginning was incredibly challenging. One of the many aspects that I enjoyed was Ms. Hutchison ability to be professional, and down to earth. The course load was very heavy, but necessary. There was no busy work in the class. The way the course is set up to give students a feeling of what law school was very helpful. Especially for those who are working multiple jobs, have families, and other commitments can begin to prepare for future challenges that we do not always consider when applying.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I would have love to learn more cases that involve Hawaii or how the cases that we did learn affected Hawaii. I know that it is not a HAP course but I feel that because we live in Hawaii, some of the course material should find relevance in Hawaii's laws. I think the last case that could have been in the class should be one that was a huge deal in Hawaii. I think a field trip to observ a court trial would have been fun.
The pop quizzes were initiated after a mid session survey by the Ms. Hutchison (keeper). Perhaps doing a small tour of the law school. Not sure if this is possible, but perhaps going to a courthouse. Summer sessions are very limited due to time constraints, but that would be really interesting. The LSAT prep work was done immediately upon entering the class, sometimes I felt that it was too quick, maybe doing it at the end of the class.
15. Other comments:
I would love to have a list of materials that you have found to be extremely thought provoking or revealing of the inner workings of the court system.
This class was a tremendous help to my professional and academic planning. I highly recommend everyone who is considering applying to law school take this class, but not just with any instructor. Ms. Elisabeth Hutchison is an amazing, and brilliant professor. She takes the time with every single student to ensure we understand the content. She is very involved in the learning process, and has an enormous amount of patience for her students. She will challenge you and put you on the spot, but not to humiliate you. This course is not for the faint-hearted. If you commit to the work you will learn a great deal about law and yourself. She is so enthusiastic and energetic that I am excited to come to class, and even though it was so much work I am sad the class is over this week :( . I would love to see Ms. Hutchison teach more classes I would take any course she offered and I would recommend her to all of my peers.

Giving me knowledge and insight of the Supreme Court! I never in a million years thought that I would be interested in law or the Supreme Court and its Justices. I feel a lot more educated about politics and the issues that have shaped our country. Professor Hutchison told me in the beginning of the term that this class would change my life, and it did!
one of the most influential classes I have ever taken, since it has really showed me my true passion
the amount of cases I had to read and how to think critically while supporting diverse points of views. I'll also remember the cases dealing with discrimination and how they were (or were not) resolved to help with research in the future.

I really liked learning about what rights we have as U.S. citizens. I knew about the basic rights like life and liberty, but I had no idea that fundamental rights to marriage and procreation existed. It made me feel more empowered :)

I really enjoyed the final project for the class. Although I found it difficult to write my own letters of recommendation, I did think that other aspects of the assignment were practical and served as a good practice for the future.

I especially liked that the class was small, so you felt super obligated to get everything done and be prepared; pretty shame if you're one out of 5 people that didn't do the work. The cases that were chosen were fun. The questions for the cases took long, but definitely bettered my understand of the subject at hand.

The homework is A LOT, but it's necessary! If I had it my way I'd wish that the homework load was a little less but if it were that way I don't think I would have learned as much as I did. Maybe you can switch to doing one case for homework and then do one case in class together?
For the time we were given I think it was perfect. Otherwise a lot of homework
I think this course could be improved by offering more articles to read for the Supreme Court Justices. There were some Justices that I would have liked to have read about except they weren't on the list. I was also unsure about how to find good articles on the Justices to do my summaries, but the articles provided were interesting to read as well.
More time doing our homework because there are too much materials to cover. There should be a way so we know how to calculate the scores we are getting so we know before if we should improve more.
The room could be less cold. Make the room warmer. I don't like to sit in refrigerators.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Studying common Constitutional interpretations. Learning about Supreme Court justices.
The LSAT preperation questions and practice exam i felt served me best because i do indeed plan to persue a career in law school and i was never introduced to any LSAT material until i took this course. Now i have a better chance at scoring higher than i would've if i didn't take this practice exam and practice questions.
She really pushed me as a student. I thought that the class was going to be impossible and that I was incapable. The articles in her reader where extremely informative and I learned so much about the Supreme Court because of it. I loved her media aspects because they tied the readings into everyday life.
All aspects were quite valuable, however I believe the broad variety of cases were most valuable.
Homework was the biggest i thought
EVERYTHING !! This is probably one of the most influential classes I have ever taken at the University of Hawaii. Prof. Hutchison made every class "worth going to" and she challenged me to try my best and think and analyze diverse law cases.
All of the cases and learning from the constitution materials.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
On the one hand, I found that the group learning that we did - going over the homework together, was far more valuable and helped me learn a lot more than lectures would have, but at the same time, it was kind of boring to just go over answers that almost all of us had right. However, it was probably necessary in order to get the fundamentals down.
Sumarizing justices. I felt personally that not all justices are worth mentioning simply because some were foul and have a lot of errors in their thought pattern. Am i supose to look up to them? are they supose to be my role models? I feel that there are other better methods to recognize or distinguish justices rather than trying to find postive footnotes to describe them. I've heard plenty of them who were awful or died grumpy and angry whats so special about that? why do we as students need to recognize folks who dissented for so many wrong reasons? I liked the way oyez shows them from liberal to conservative; why not do the same with pictures and order them. But again thats just my opinion.
Nothing about this course wasn't valuable!!
those articles about the justices, was too vague...didn't understand exactly what to do.
That the course is already coming to a close...
Probably the Justice articles. I think there were a heck of a lot of questions to answer as well.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the subject material. I liked that it was challenging and writing intensive.
I liked the round robin and the open floor discussions. The level of communication was definitely high in the class and everybody came thru hungry and ready to take down cases. You can't be scared to answer questions or question your certainty; over here you come prepared and ready to argue why you are right and bring that confidence right in with you. Cuz Dr. Hutchison is a shark with a mean bite and she will put pressure on your logic if you don't come prepared or feel confident. the point i see of her coming off so strong is that she wants to reinforce the important concepts and test your confidence along with that. even if your right you have to know how to be right from all angles and if you don't over prepare youself you won't be ready when its your turn to step up at bat.
I really like the law school project. She really made me feel like going to law school was possible.
Ms. Hutchison's passion for teaching.
The fact that i actually learned something useful from a class...invaluable
I liked our class discussions because it stimulated everyone to think, analyze and give their own opinions on the controversial issues that we discussed. I also liked how enthusiastic Prof. Hutchison was throughout the whole semester, and she really made the class interesting, thought provoking and fascinating. She really cared about her students and made sure each student was "staying on top" of their work and not falling behind, and she was understanding when I had questions or concerns about an assignment. She is a very dedicated, professional and hard-working teacher.

NO THREE RING BINDERS EVER!!! About a dozen pages came loose and fell out of my binder over the month, just from carrying it around. Several others only have one or two punch holes in tact. I can't imagine how many would have fallen out during a fall or spring semester. I suggest a bound reader that people can buy in the copy shop, those last forever. It may even be possible to put the readings online.
To be honest i felt that it was a little over intensive for it to be just one (3 credit) course. Not that the work isn't impossible i just wonder if there it the consideration that students may have more than one course at a time; and as we know it all summer courses are intessive. To be honest if i would have had a 3rd class i would have had to drop one because this class alone asked for too much time out side of the classroom to dedicate to 70-100 questions every other day.
The course needed no improvements.
As a summer course, there is a lot to go through, sometimes...too much
The course could be improved with a shortening of the workload. This way, I could have concentrated and put more effort into a shorter amount of homework.
Less Home work questions. Maybe an exercise to help us understand political language.
23. Other comments:
This class was definitely a challenge (400 level, writing intensive, oral communication, summer class). I would say the level of intensity really made me have to make some sacrafices in my social life because of the amount of time i had to dedicate to the work. There were definitely alot of all-nighters doing classwork. I don't expect any less intensity when i get to law school but this was definitely a crash course that broke me in to what i should expect. I defintely recommend Dr. Hutchinson as thee-- law proffessor to have if you do plan on going to law school.
Extra credit assignments go a long way. sometimes i just didnt have enough time to do everything
This class has influenced me so much to the point where I am applying to the William S. Richardson Law School in January 2011, because Prof. Hutchison has motivated me to pursue this dream that I have had for 4 years now.
Keep her around she is an EXCELLENT instructor and very enthusiastic about her work.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked watching movie clips and videos because it showed how the lessons in class applied to everyday life.
always willing to give help outside of class and very open to suggestions or the needs of students. Able to stimulate interest of the class subject. Great Class
the powerpoint presentations were very organized and the video & audio clips were amazing & good to learn from.
I liked that she involved students in discussions rather than just reading off the lecture.
The use of video and audio clips were helpful in my understanding.
The videos and fascinating facts that aroused my interest.
the videos and discussions
Ms. Steele Hutchinson was incredibly enthusiastic about teaching the material in this class; it gave me the feeling that she really cared both about what she was teaching students and the current issues at hand in the world today. She was very upbeat and
Elisabeth made the class very interesting and entertaining. Her use of different types of media (audio, video, text, etc.) and the format of the lectures made attending class engaging.
She was fair and was effective in getting her point across.
I love this teacher! She uses lots of information from many sources and inspires me to read more about the topic. I would strongly recommend this class to my friends.
The extra credit was offered in a wide range, which works for such a large class.
Incorporation of media to facilitate understanding of the course material helped tremendously in generating interest in learning.
The lectures were the best part of the class
The incorporation of youtube videos and such, along with other media. Her tests were also very fair.
I enjoyed the incorporation of media into the course, it made the material more relatable.
i would like more graded work
Everyone had a chance to give their own opinions, How the lectures were given through powerpoint and audio.
I really liked that she made it fun and was open to discussion no matter what. It was nice to be in a class that you weren't just taking note furiously and listening to a teacher drone on with information. She made want to pay attention and picked topics
The video clips demonstrate the concepts and idea of the topic being discussed seem to reinforce learning besides the power point presentation
I liked the fact that the text was aided by visual aids such as videos and pictures and music videos.. stuff that we can relate to.. fun stuff that catches our attention.. also real life stuff.. i liked the fact that we are encouraged to participate in cl
I loved that Professor Hutchison as well as all the course materials, ie lectures, handouts were so accessible via webct, email, in class, office hours, etc. I also loved that she was so excited about the content of the class and how it related to her li
all the videos especially middle sexes
The videos in the powerpoints
powerpoint and videos were awesome and she is a great lecturer
The fact that she used each type of media that the class room allowed, and that it wasnt just a lecture for an entire hour and fifteen minutes.
great examples/clips/etc to support and demonstrate topics
Subjects covered in course
This instructor was very informative, had excellent learning tools as well as a wide range which made lectures more engaging, and challenged the students well and incorporated the ideas of the students into the learning process.
I liked how different the class was and how the instructor provoked me to think about the material outside of class. It was all so interesting. Also, I really liked having webct to be able to keep track of our grades and assignments.
speaking
It was a good environment to learn and apply it to real life events and situations. I enjoyed it very much.
I liked the material that was taught in class. When I registered for this class, I had no idea what exactly this course was going to be about except the fact that we're going to learn about genders. I didn't expect that there were so many issue going on w
The articles that were given out were interesting also the list of movies relevent to class were also interesting.
I liked the way she used video clips to elaborate the subject matter more clearly to students.
Professor Steele Hutchison was very knowledgeable in the various topics we discussed in lectures.
The fact that she encourages us to send her things that we believe pertain to the class and that she keeps it lively and makes us think critically everyday that we are in her class. She is truly inspiring and a wonderful teacher.
I enjoyed Elizabeth's modern and interactive way of teaching. She encouraged us to participate by sharing relevant material and used age-appropriate material to engage us.
Everything!
the powerpoint, and utube videos
I liked the examples she used during class, because they were real and relatable.
how interesting she made the subject
The videos really helped me to visualize what was going on in our chapters.
I thought that the way the instructor taught th eclass was just fantastic. i often found myself trying to take notes but too intersted in the material to scribble anything down. This rapt interest she inspired in the material caused me to retain much more
everything
Interesting material
I liked that there was a course website that I could refer to when ever I needed to. I also liked that there were many chances to earn extra credit points.
media that was used in the course
i enjoyed learning from a professor who really knew the material and was passionate about the subject. it was also great coming to class and seeing all the slides and the clips--it was really helpful!
she was open minded about all sexes and genders
i liked that she gave a lot of examples from our own everyday lives
I loved group discussions and how the teacher incorporated student findings from everyday life, and shared it with us all.
I loved all the clips and the openness of the instructor to talk about ANY subject
I like this class for exploring me to new information and knowledge. She is really a nice teacher.

15. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
There could be more reviews for the exams and more indepth homework assignments. Also, there could be more articles relating to the class.
I dont think anything needs to be improved
I think she should rethink the credit or no credit on homework because it's not fair to those who did 99% of the work and if they forget to answer just one question, they get no credit.
Perhaps increase the total amount of points possible
Don't change computers in the middle of class. Videos got messed up. Maybe offer bonus points in the second half of the semester (I am in dire need of those).
because the teacher was so excited to be teaching, she spoke a little too fast
I'm fairly satisfied with everything in the course. The material was good, but in order for it to really sink in and be noted, it was necessary for the professor to use all the extra content she did; but if that is how she teaches, then I'm very satisfie
I wish we could've turned in homework assignments late or been able to submit them via email if we had a legit reason for not attending class that day (i.e. a doctor's note).
Perhaps online homework submitting would be helpful. Perhaps more book work.
Nothing at all. This class is on of my favorites!
This course has to work on its approach to alternative sexualities. While the professor must have thought her style was effective, I thought that she made homosexuality to be some extravagant deviation that people must analyze like a disease rather than
I'm not so sure how this class could be improved. I liked the format of the class and felt I learned a considerable amount
Nothing comes to mind.
i really enjoyed this course. my biggest problem was with some people in the class not really getting what was being taught.
Give us a study guide for all chapters. Give points for attendence.
better representation of minority.. like more male feedback.. be it from the outside opinions of men or the men in class..
have test review sessions
I think that the exams should be a little more relevant to the powerpoints since that is what we look at more.
actually grade the hw so we know if it is right or wrong instead of just looking to see if every question has an answer--> very misleading when it comes to the test!
Some how it was a big class and she often encouraged to speak out or speak up to get involved but since the class was so big I really didnt want to talk out loud in front of every one. But I often wanted to add my thoughts to our conversations.
more tests covering less material.
This course was good, I'm not sure what could be done to improve the class.
I think that the instructor should give some sort of study guide for the exams. I also think that more Uncollected Pop Quizzes would be helpful to review the information we should know for the exams.
none. was great.
The readings arent very clear to keep up, and it class there could be more text book ideas.
I don't like how the classroom is set up. There isn't that much people taking the course so couldn't there be a much smaller classroom.
More articles and more discussion that would be not nessesarily right out of the text. Alot of class time was on what we read from the text, I felt that it was too helpful for non text readers and redundent to text readers.
The class size is too large, and obviously could be shrunk. There should be less reliance on the text, and more out of class activities such as listening to a talk or visiting an exhibit. I believe more movies should be shown in class rather than talking
Nothing.
I absolutly loved this course and the teacher I would not have improved one thing about the way the course was taught or the content. I was always openminded but this course has made my vision so much clearer. And i greatly appreciate it.
Grade the homework so that we get partial credit.
n/a
nothing, you got the course planned out to a T!!!
Maybe the course could be divided into two corresponding courses. I think to cover this much material in one semester, is kind of a lot to take in at once. But, overall it is okay the way t is.
i dont know...it was done the way i believe seemed best
The only thing I would suggest is that the class be somewhat smaller because I think more discussion time would be great.
I don't think there's anyway that this course could be improved
A studyd guide for the testss
I don't think there is much more that can be done to make this course better. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe providing a possible review session prior to exams.
provide a study guide
i think this class is great the way it is
I think that it would help this course to have more quizzes. also, would help to go over the correct answers to the homework, so that we can study correctly.
could have study guides in preparation for the tests
I wouldnt change anything.
I had a hard time taking notes because of how fast we went over the slides
It would be good if she could speak slower. Her pace is too fast sometimes, I hardly follow.
