13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked that we had a lot of time to do these assignment and lots of extra credit.
The course itself along with Sensei's teaching style are superb.
Everything
Good pace
I liked the lesson plans and how each lesson was spread out. It definitely made the learning process simpler and more effective. The essay portion was one of my favorites because it tested my understanding of sentence structure.
I love sensei! She makes learning the Japanese material easier. I never thought I could remember so much about one subject without struggle.
Everything
I like to learn Japanese
i learned more japanese than i had learned before
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
not so much work and the class needs to go slower.
Everything was great! I would suggest however keeping the homework scheduled for due by date, like in the beginning with the hirigana and katakana.

I think that Sensei might be a more effective teacher if she did exercises right after explaining a process or idea, so that students would "get" it more easily and the idea would sink in. Maybe if she could explain the ideas in her own words instead of reading straight from the text, students may have a better chance of taking it in. We already have the text to reference. I also feel like if the majority of the class is not getting something, we should review it and make sure that we understand it, before moving on.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning from Sensei during this semester and and last semester in Conversational Japanese. I honestly feel like I learned more during the two semesters in college than I learned during the two years I took Japanese in High School. I plan on recommending her to any student looking to learn Japanese and already have recommended her. :)
I think that Sensei Skyles-Kaipo is good instructor. I might have not been a good fit for her teaching style. I know that Japanese is a hard language and takes dedication. I wish I could have been a better student in her class and had more time to spend on Japanese. It was a bit discouraging being amongst fluent speakers, students that have taken Japanese all through high school, or were raised with the language and knew most of the course work. It made it hard to keep up, and was a bit hard on self confidence when it came to trying to keep up with students that knew the language. I wish I was with more beginning learners.

The class was enjoyable
nothing. too damn hard.
I liked it when we had homework. It forced me to learn more and it was fun.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
maybe a schedule of when things will be assigned and what days the assignments are due. I don't recall the class receiving anything like what I've described and it would have been very helpful.
make course longer.
Maybe a field trip?
15. Other comments:
Instructor made the course fun. I enjoyed hearing about her personal experiences living in Japan. She was very accommodating and it was evident that she wanted the students to do well and succeed.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
the field trips
both feild trips to the Hogwanji and the tea house in liloukalani park were very fun and effective.
Ms.Jessica Skyles-Kaipo helped me a lot of course works and out of course works. She is very kind teacher. I like her activities, projects, and assignments are great!
I loved everything in this class.
the teacher is very ituitive and sly. she has a deeper understanding of the culture that i did. i learn a lot thankd to her and made my view in the japanese culture much wider. she too is very funny and understandable. she is cool to hang out.
2 field trips, topics covered and we haven't done presentations yet but i think that should be good. everything we covered from power points is put on laulima including study guides. she gives a lot of extra credit and we have for the most part enough time to do reaction papers.
I liked the group assignments.

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I liked the overall course.
the teacher is really helpful, and teaches very well.
I really liked how Jessica-sensei made the class very self-motivational. In a college level class, a babysitting professor seems a bit counter-productive and I appreciate this.
I enjoyed the attention to Kanji and the practice that was made available for it.
I liked learning from the golden book. The combination of the blue explanation book with a solid vocab list to study really helped out when it came time to take the test. Also the review days helped me to prepare for the test.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
How efficient å??ç?? was teaching the material and how helpful she was.
I liked it mainly for the fact that it was helping me learn Japanese, which is one of my goals right now. She was a good teacher that was well prepared and had a variety of ways to present the material to me so I could learn and understand it better. My favorite activity was the essay we had to complete with Japanese. It was challenging and I hope to be able to do it again after learning more of the language. Overall, a great course.
I liked learning the Japanese language through the various activities, such as going through the books together/lectures, dialog days, and the essay.
The test in this class were exactly what you would expect them to be, no trick questions. As long as you make an effort in this class you can pass. Also, she is always there to help when you need it. Especially during finals week when her office is crowded with students trying to squeeze all the knowledge they can out of her in preparation for the final. She was always very positive and approachable.
something i liked about this class was that i was able to learn a bunch of different words in a different language.
I just liked the class, because I always was interested in Japanese.
I liked getting a more one-on-one approach and having the ability to practice daily language skills and the challenges that each assignment gave me to move at a relatively quick pace.
The Verbal Comprehension Test was a bit scary but I was well prepared thanks to sensei. Arigatoyo.
I loved the worksheets and puzzles we were given. I also enjoyed review day; even though it was kind of like a pop quiz, it's when we actually applied what we learned instaed of drilling information into our brains. The homework that was given really helped to memorize the grammar and sentence structure.
She was very patient and had great knowledge of the language.
When I had to write a essay in Japanese it actually helped me to learn the vocabulary that I was using and helped solidify what she was teaching.
I enjoyed learning new words and how to make proper sentence structures. I liked how she assigned the students to write sentences on the bored. It was difficult, but it got the students involved with the language.
Everything. . .Instructor has a great way of teaching. A fun and effective way of learning a new language.
It was fun to learn, very effective to learn.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Pay Sensei more, needs free coffee for 8 o'clock class.
Nope.
i think that you should make the homework assignments due soon after given it because like myself i ended up procrastinating and didn't do any of my assignments till the last minute.
I guess could have study guides for the tests/quizzes.

Even though the homeowork helped, it was so much that I had a hard time getting to all of it in time withough interfering with my other classes. If we had more class work besides diologue day and review, I think it would have served me better. And perhaps more realistic diologue like "may I have a coke?" instead of "it's raining outside". Other than that I loved my Nihongo class.
The explanations could have been more clear for people unfamiliar with linguistics. Also it was hard for me to listen while taking notes but that is more my problem. She explains a lot during note taking so I feel I missed much.

Perhaps emphasize that Japanese 101 is writing intensive; I thought I was going to be speaking more japanese but that wasn't the case.
Great teacher!! She understands the problems of learning a language and gives extra credit for tests.
i'd totally recommend this course and teacher to friends and fellow students if they are to learn Japanese.

Coming from the previous semester class with her, I always learned new things everyday in this class. Even if we do review and I thought that I knew the material, there was always something to take in.
I enjoyed the lectures and class work, it was very effective.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
I still wish that this class was a bit longer, but little can be done about that.

i liked that it was well-structured. each lesson had the same setup and workload. i liked that if you didnt do well mrs. skyles-kaipo always was available and sometimes offered extra credit work. she was very accomodating and actually tried to help you succeed.
Great course. Amount of work is perfect, helps you learn as well as remember. Projects/work helped develop our skills, as well as test our knowledge. Her lectures really helped in understanding this course.
I have already knew most of the content that was presented in this course but there were some material that I did not know and I'm glad I was able to learn them effectively in this class.
I love everything. Mrs Skyles Kaipo your the best> :)
I liked learning how to make different sentences, and being able to converse.
The work given was easy to understand and the content was easy to remember. The activities of dialogue helped the students learned about their fellow classmates and get their perspectives on the subject.
I liked the course in general. I liked the way Kanji was presented. Gave a lot of examples

There was a lot of book work. Course went by fast. Course was good. She made learning Japanese fun and she really stressed to learn the material. She was very willing to help with anything you needed during office hours. I would like to take Japanese 102 but I don't know if I will be able to keep up.

Hmm not sure
nothing at all this course is just AWESOME!!!!
nouthin
I think that i would try to add more movies and TV shows. However, it is very difficult to do so considering that there is so much material that needs to be covered. I think that more writing assignments like the essay would be good to add to. This for me, solidified the knowledge of the language.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
she is really patient with us and knowing we are just learning a new language
It's good
sensei skyles is the best teacher EVER!!!!! teaching methods are just superb!!!!
NOUTHIN
I think that the teachers methods are good. She is very through and takes time to make sure that difficult subjects are explained and understood. I think that they way that the class is set up is very effective and if any one was to do all of the assignments and attend most of the class they should do well in the class.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
yes, i look forward to taking this class to the next level and taking other courses with her
Yes, a lot
ohh yeah!! she has contributed alot towards the language aspects and the cultural aspects of japanese!
NOUTHIN
Indeed! I feel that I have learned more in this class than I have learned in two years of Japanese at the High School level. I would like to work in a Japanese environment one day and believe that the skills that were taught in this class will be very useful.

Sensei Skyle-Kaipo is an excellent teacher. I would recommend her for tenure. She has the experience and can would do very well in a faculty position at Hawaii Community College. I believe that she would get involved with the university system and make learning fun an enjoyable for students.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
longer class time
I would move away from just studying with the text books. I would find a more creative way to help us learn. Like make a mock Japan day where the students come in and pretend to go shopping and talking with each other in Japanese.
I would not change anything except to speake more of the language then to read and write it.
no comment
She's a fantastic instructor, I wouldn't change a thing.
no improvements
No improvements other than I would suggest that Sensei talk more about her life in Japan, the country, the language and its people, and also the culture.
nothing. maybe longer class time.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
good
It's good. But too much text book.
I enjoyed the way she explains the language in general.
no comment
I think she is great. Her knowledge of the language made it easier for me to learn.
very good, simplistic, and beneficial
It's really good because she is totally approachable and nice. I was really behind in her class and she helped me a lot. I'm still horrible at Japanese (not because of my sensei; it was really my fault for not putting enough time and effort into my studying) but she is a GREAT teacher. Learning the stroke order for all of the characters and kanji was a great help too.
it is well.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?

yes.
Yes I have a much better understanding of the japanese language.

yes
definitely
Yep. =)
yes very much!

the class was great and nothing should be changed
I learned a lot from her.
i think the class time should be longer than 50 minutes.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
The textbooks seem a little out-dated. It would be nice to have an extra day for each lesson. Within each lesson the textbook and kanji characters don't always match up, making it difficult to try to learn a wide variety of vocabulary and characters. The homework assignments from the textbook are often really repetitive. I can see that it helps to practice the writing, but it can also be counter-productive because I sometimes felt myself just going through the motions to get it done as soon as possible and not actually trying to learn.
nothing
Be able to at least know a little bit of japanese from a younger age would help a bit.
nothing, it was a great course for someone who has no experience speaking Japanese... I definitely am looking forward to taking JPNS 102 in the Fall 09 or Spring '10 Semester.
nothing
Longer class periods would help with learning material.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Good. She definitely knows the subject matter and does a pretty thorough job of explaining things. As a critique, sometimes it would help to go slower, especially with difficult concepts. I think that more simple, repetitive, in-class examples would be helpful. These examples should be very, very basic with vocabulary just learned. Also, since this is a beginner class, it can confuse people to introduce too many things at once. For example sometimes she'd say that advanced speakers can use the same word in a different situation, which is good to inform us, but just made me more confused. I know that sometimes I wouldn't ask a question because I was too confused to even know where to begin. It definitely would've helped if I had prepared myself more for class, but since it wasn't assigned I wouldn't read up on the material in advance. Maybe it should be assigned in advance just to force the slackers to be ready.
excellent
She's wonderful and a great teacher but 1 hour a day for somebody that don't know nothing about the language you guaranteed is goin to need help.
great teacher & teaching methods.
great
Learning tools (worksheets) that she used were helpful.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
Yes, a lot.
yes
Yes. Because it could be used in tourist industries all over the world.
yes, I've figured out that I want to major in Foreign Language with a minor in Business through this course. (or vice verse, not sure yet.) When I speak Japanese, it is really exciting; I loved the Verbal Comprehension Test.
absolutely
Yes, I know more Japanese than I did before, but it is a challenging language and sometimes I get frustrated.
22. Other comments:
Overall the teacher is really good. She has a great attitude and it's obvious that she really wants the students to learn. She really knows what she's teaching and can relate to the students in a lot of ways. She was fun and kept the class interesting even though all of us were usually half asleep at 8 in the morning.
hi
She was a great teacher and wish i could of learned more from her.
Looking forward to JPNS 102!! :)

20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Doing work straight out of the book is fine by me, but it can't be only that. The textbook we used is quite confusing. I think that it would have been better if our instructor would have made worksheets that built upon the book's concepts. Just filling in
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
I did learn a lot from this course, but that's because I studied on my own time. I didn't really get anything our instructor said. I just took notes and did my own thing.
22. Other comments:
On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, I emjoyed this course at a 6. Although, I didn't really enjoy this course as much as I would of liked, I'm still going to take Japanese next semester.

A bit more time in explaining some things more.
Nothing.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
I love Sensei! She's so enthusiastic about what she teaches and understands that it's a difficult subject so she is very nice about working with you and explaining each concept.
I enjoyed her enthusiasm in having us learn kanji. Knowing the stroke orders really help.
Her methods are great & easy to grasp.

I've actually found myself able to learn grammar points slightly better in this course. As well as memorizing the kanji better.
Yes.
