9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

Kumu Kahele style of organizing and teaching her class is excellent. bring some ono food I dont know if she could improve the teachings of this course everything went pretty well this semester in this class. She is wonderful, I couldn't think what else she could do. Her classroom insturctions are highly effective for our class. Kumu Kahele is a great teacher, she didn't need any improvements. She is a very helpful teacher. wonderful class,made learning challanging as well as fun. mahalo Ms. Dukelow makes learning a new language easy and fun - she is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Her enthusiasm for her topic is contagious. She treats all students with respect and kindness. She utilizes the entire class time effectively. She involves all the students in a friendly way. I think that more games would help the students learn the material because of the competition. Other than that, I believe she has done an excellent job at teaching us about the Hawaiian language. i would like to practice the language more in class i think the environment of the teaching is just as important & she deserves a.c. or at least, a proper fan, for teaching in an underground mole hole. :) Making more opportunities for extra credit would help students improve their grades. However, many students don't complete the extra credit anyway, but personally I would love more points to be available to improve my own grade.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

i loved the tools she used to teach her class. She made it very comfortable. ALL learning hawaiian language Everything was pretty good All all the class participation that kumu has the class do. Not only does this help us practice the language but also helps us with speaking the language in front of people. I liked everything about her class, because it was a cheerful environment and we did a lot of team work. I liked every aspect of this class. She is an excellent teacher! I like how Kumu Kahele has group activities or activities that makes you involved in the lesson instead of just having the information that is given straight up. I loved the games we played because it made learning fun, and they also help me remember the material more easily. presentation and keys to encourage memorization. Games we played in class to learn hawn, oral practice I like the course content The aspect of having to get up and present ourselves in class. Everything about Kumu Kahele's class I enjoyed. interaction. class participation-whether group or individual. encouragement & help if needed. i like the class all around, she makes teaching the class more appealing-where we want to go to class & it easier for us to learn a new language. She is a well rounded teacher that allows all classmates to feel comfortable in her class setting. She is very positive and enthusiastic, making it easy for all of her students to learn more effectively. She has a great personality and good humor, keeping us all interested with fun group activities.

11. Other comments:

Great teaching style. I wished there would be a 201 and 202 with her as an instuctor. Would really like to see a hawaiian language class on cable so that people who can't make it to class because of work, can still take that class to fulfill the requirements. Overall, Kumu Kahele is one of the best teachers at this college. Very good instructor. Enjoy the class. This class has inspired me more then just learning to speak my own language, but to open up and express myself. I cannot wait to take HAW102 in the fall which I have already enrolled for. I love this class. She is a non threatening teacher that makes it easy for you to try hard in her class.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

She is a wonderful teacher, i think her class schedule should be a little bit more precise. I think that she did a great job in taking our class through the History of Hawaii to the present day.. I don't think that she could have done a better job... I think she did a really good job with course and dont know what else she could have done. she doesn't need to she is good at it. made it fun but getting more book for the class for the students No improvement. The way she is teaching now is good. Shes really good at what she teachs. Kumu is an awesome teacher, very knowledgeble in all the areas we studied and she was ready to help out in any way. by going slower in class and on how she takes on different topics and courses on time The essays or papers where very difficult. The papers were given 1 week before it was due. It was very difficult to put a well thought out and organized paper in such a short period of time. Also the essays need a better format to follow. It was unclear what was expected. I think it must be hard for international students to follow the material without a basic understanding of the culture. Certain terms in Hawaiian may common knowledge for some of us, but others could be confused. I actually enjoyed everything she taught and the way she explained the material. There is really nothing she needs to improve on teaching in this course. She teaches it on so many levels so all different learners can understand the material. Such as through pictures, videos and lectures. I think everything went well, but the projector for the video's were sometimes non functional. The class was great, no improvements necessary. I think she did an excellent job teaching this course. She is very knowledgable and is very enthusiastic about course material.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Everything she taught us was great. She helped me better understand the Hawaiian people and their history. I liked that she is active in the Hawaiian culture and is trying to revive it. Learning things that i have never even heard of before about the place I grew up and learning about their amazing culture. the aspects i liked the best was the story telling about the hawaiian gods. talking about the ahupuaa and how the system works. learning more about our island background and caring our Hawaiians feeling I just like the fact that it was very knowledgeable. In general, i really liked this class; every single part of it. I like leaning about how Hawai'i is actually not a state. I liked learning about the old hawaiian times and how times were back then. Also i like learning about papa and wakea and KALO. Everything was clear and well organized. the history videos instead of boring lectures I really loved this class, I thought Kumu Dukelow was passionate about and knew so much about the topics presented in class. She encouraged us all to become involved. The enviornment of the class was very good, the class was very good participants and came with great attitudes. The overall participation was awesome, and this is how the classroom should be at all times anyways.This provides a college level enviornment. Another aspect i liked was how we used powerpoints this made it very useful and easy access to the material to study.I also enjoyed how we would watch small clips about the past of old Hawai'i. This helped to understand the material more, and she would have great descriptions about everything that was going to be on the test and the things that were very important to study. Kahele is a very discriptive teacher, and made sure each of her students understood the material. I really enjoyed this class :) The video's were very helpful about the Hawaiian People. The stories about the early history of Hawaii is something people don't know about. the visuals such as movies to get clearer understandings of certain concepts. I actually enjoyed the videos we watched and the discussions we had after them. This brought a ton of insight to what we were learning.

She is a great teacher..... I really enjoyed this class and really enjoyed the teacher. I would recommend this class to others :) your the best kumu!!! This class to me seemed like we went on a journey. It felt like we were in a time machine and went through every event that caused us to be were Hawaii is today. This class was very well put together! I would recommend this instructor to others! I will definetley be recommending Kahele,and this class to many other people and other friends of mine.This class was very educational and i feel like i have learned so much more and i feel way more educated about things i didnt know much about before.:) awesome I enjoyed her class. I learned a lot of things about the Hawaiian culture. And things I thought I already knew, were cleared with recollections of the past history of the Hawaiian people, the different changes the Hawaiian people endured. The Hawaiian people are still here in Hawaii. Thanks for be a wonderful teacher, Mahalo! Loved it! :)

Kumu worked really hard to get everyone involved and be interactive to learn the mo`olelo ourselves instead of just sitting back and listening to the story. I don't know what else she could have done. I thought she did an amazing job. I only wish we could have gotten to more stories. more projects i think she does a very great job teaching she's very knowledgeable in what she teaches so i would say she does her job well keep up the great work. She is an amazing teacher, and I hope to take other courses from her. Nothing. i thought this class was very fun and educational. I think the course is taught well and I cant think of a way to improve it. I thought the class was very well put together. print out the story for her students.

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I loved learning all the stories, especially seeing the different versions of the same story. And I really liked learning some of the lesser known stories that i hadn't heard elsewhere, like the mano stories. DICUSSIONS the folklore stories the whole aspect of this course was fantastic the myths of hawaiian gods, or legends, the geneaology of akuas. this class was very intresting and kumu made it even more comfortable. Loved everything! I was born and raised in the mainland, although I have family in Hawaii. I have been living in Maui for six years now. I have been interested in Hawaiian studies for a while and having the opportunity to take a course under Kumu Dukelow has been a blessing. Through this course, I have gained invaluable insight into Hawaiian culture and beliefs which make me feel even more connected to the aina. I would recommend this course to my peers, and I would love to take another course under the instruction of Kumu Dukelow. all of the old hawaiian stories we got to read and analyze. I enjoyed the convenience of viewing material online. This consisted of reading assignments as well as quizzes. I liked all the stories we explored and how she explained where it came from and how she is opened to other peoples ideas of the meaning of the stories. I liked how she kept in touch with us via laulima and emails. I enjoyed the course content as well. everything, because i got to learn about things im interested and gave me the motivation to learn and read more hawaiian stories i liked learning a lot about the hawaiian mythology and going deeper in to such as finding the meaning of the hawaiian words and history behind the hawaiian people.

11. Other comments:

I would take any courses that she offered. Kumu is really enthusiastic and inspiring. kahele is a phenomenal teacher who does her job well. i have really enjoyed her classes and the lessons that she teaches. i greatly appreciate you for sharing your mana'o with us and for having such great energy while working with us. great job kumu keep on doing what your doing because you rock.... none. She is very supportive and a great instructor.

10. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

Nothing. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Kumu dosent need to improve anything. Kumu Kahele is the BOMB!! No Comment. I cant think of anything. One way to improve the class would be to practice pronouncing things allowed in class. Another way would be to study vocabulary using pictures. no I learned a lot over this course while having fun at the same time. The only suggestion I have is that she teach a follow up course, HAW 102. A weekly quiz (graded or not) would more helpful so that we may review and strengthen what we learned during that week. I think it will help because it becomes another learning tool to support our learning the language. Mahalo I am hoping that this class will get moved to a better time. It cuts into people's days making it harder for students that have jobs to come to class. However,Kahele is a very understanding teacher and lets people make things up when needed. I cannot ask for a better teacher. Thank you. My kumu is one of the best teachers i have ever had, and i mean that. I have had hawaiian teachers befor, and i have never connected with a teacher beter than kahele...............great kumu Your doing fine. Kumu Kahele is well adverse. She is an understanding and caring instructor. She is very knowledgeable and is willing to find answers in the community or resources. I would definately reccomend her to others. nothing.

11. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

ALL EVERYTHING The Storybooks and also Class Discussions. I enjoyed the group activities the best. In class discussion and games. I love olelo Hawai'i. Its a beautiful language. group excersizes My favorite part was the instructors enthusiasm. She has such a passion for Hawaiian and she integrated her own personality into this course very well. group activities, extra credit opportunities, learning new things everyday, encouraging students to continue hawaiian studies and language. Everything. I was engaged in activities during class: group work was essential because our levels of learning are different. We had a mixture of students that offered their knowledge of the language to help support the other students with first time experience. The books (stories) she shared in class were fun and rewarding. There was a lot of "hands" on material that I found to be beneficial in my learning. Mahalo Hawaiian Language has been my passion for 20 years. I was not able to have the opportunity to be able to learn the aspects of the language. It's challenges has been the fact that we are having a hard time figuring out what to do as in sentences. I love learning about the subject itself. Everything is very interesting, learning hawaiian is something everyone should be doing. Coming to class everyday. I like how Kumu incorporates many learning styles and techniques. I loved that Kumu Kahele brought us close as a class by encouraging participation. She takes the time to make sure everyone understands what is going on. Kumu is so funny and has a good attitude which makes class fun too! i like how our class is more like a family than classmates, and i feel that the teacher made is so comfortable for us that we're all family now.

12. My overall evaluation of this course is...

It was excellent! I wish Kahele taught Hawaiian 102 also. I RECOMMEND THIS CLASS TO EVERYONE!!! GREAT Elementary Hawaiian was a great course and I have thoroughly enjoyed attending the course this semester. Excellent! Kumu Kahele was very knowledgable and helpful. She makes it fun and easier. Kahele has been a great teacher. This is the third time I have enrolled in Hawaiian 101 however, this is the first time I can understand and make progress. She uses many in class techniques that realy help. I appreciate her deliverance of the course material. I would love for her to teach me hawaiian language period! This class was the bomb because we learned tough things together, we worked together, we grew together. excellent My overall evaluation of this course is that I would, and I have, recommend this class to anyone that wants to learn Hawaiian language. i love it. Being hawaiian, learning all about the culture, is so inspiring and helping me to pursue my higher education I enjoyed this class and will tell my friends and family about this instructor. Kahele was able to make this class fun and exciting, offered her time, and caused us to "want" to learn the language. There isn't a lot of instructors out there that can do that. But, she's one of the few. I look forward to taking more classes with her in the future. Mahalo Hawaiian Studies/Language is what I really want to do. With the challenges of eveyday life I would suggest another time to have this class. Kahele is a very wise teacher and fun to be around. That is very important. Very good, kahele does a great job, and has the passion to do it. I would recommend people to take your class because I learned ALOT. The course is enjoyable and helpful. The instructor is wonderful. I loved taking this class and recommend it to everyone. excellent!

10. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

I can think of nothing. I think it is fine the way it is. No changes necessary. I don't see any way to improve this course with the way Kumu Kahele taught it. The only thing that I feel could be improved with this course is the schedule. In my opinion, no improvement is necessary. The instructor does not need any improvement. The course is good as it is. If anything I think the instructor was very organized I think she did a great job and I honestly don't see any room for improvement. How can you improve on the creativity and enthusiasm of a teacher that challenges your perception of Hawaiian History? She has new innovative information always. We could have a field trip, or go out doors. Kumu Kahele is great. She's a real entertainment in class and that really suprising to me because i'd always fall asleep in high school on these subjects but she just keeps on going. She's got her class all under control. Nothing really its good, maybe a service learning project I THINK THAT SHE IS DOING A GOOD JOB, SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS THERE TO IMPROVE UPON AS A INSTRUCTOR! MAYBE WE SHOULD GO ON FIELD TRIPS TO UNDERSTAND THE HAWAIIAN HISTORY HANDS ON. i think the instructor does really well in teaching this couse. she is very knowledgeable.she does her job really well! good job kumu! This class has been challenging and interesting to me. The first week or so of instruction didn't seem to give the course the justice it deserves. I was skeptical about continuing, but once we really jumped into material- I was hooked! I fear that others may feel the same way about the first week or so, and instead of sticking through it to find that this course is really good, they will just drop it. I think my instructor is a really good and encouraging teacher while she teaches us the course material. She explains everything well and makes sure we understand what we are going over. more lee way would have been nice I think the class was taught wonderfully. I have learned a lot of information and it's all valuable information too! none N/a The instructor should continue to teach the way she has through the course of the semester. Since the class deals in part with current events, it would be good for her to keep up with current affairs in Hawaii. From my perspective, she has done a stellar job with that so far. She doesn't really have to improve anything. the work load is very manageable and the things she teaches us is very useful. I don't see any need to improve on the teaching of this course. Excellent instructor To be continuous in the teaching. Not to jump from topic to topic, to complete a section. Be the same but If the student asks a question..please..answer the question! Not with another question!..but with a clear answer that we all can understand. Thank you. Nothing at all needs to change, its a great course as it is. Because of the size of the class i feel it was maybe a bit difficult to get one on one time with the teacher, but overall very good instructor There isn't much that needs to be improved. its hard to say, so i can't really answer this question being that this class is very conflicted and it is based on the history facts and then the students opinion, i think that the papers should be more explained during class and talk thoroughly more than before. I thought that this course was a very good course considering that it was a lecture class. I think that it is set up good the way it is.

11. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I enjoyed learning about the history of hawaii from a hawaiians perpective. I liked everything. It was such a thrill to come to class and learn something new each time. It was always interesting. The materials, the lectures and the movies shown. The homework (reading) was also very interesting. Ms. Dukelow shows her true knowledge for her work. I enjoyed every part of the class! I loved learning about more modern issues and connecting it with the history we've learned. Kahele was really passionate about what she taught and it made it fun to learn. The explaining of each of the units along with powerpoints I liked watching the videos Unraveling some truth about what Hawaii really is. I like the material that we learned. It was all so interetsing. I am Hawaiian and born and raised in Hawai'i, but through this class I learned a lot more and it made me proud to be Hawaiian. Kumu Dukelow was a wonderful educator. Every aspect of how she engages our responses to the information can only be received with positiveness. the video's. some of the lessons taught, i could see for myself of how the situation really was weather it was an interview, real scenes, or re-enactments. i like how she brought keanu sai for a speaking seminar on the U.S treaty that never was. I liked the fact that we never had a dull moment in the classroom. I really like that she had a lot of class discussions. Also her ways of reviewing the material were good because I actually remembered the material. Also I love the fact that she offers extra credit. Also I like that she is very accommodating if i missed a class and we have to make up work. I really liked when we learned about the hawaiian arts. That was my favorite. I like that everything is online and that you are able to look at the power points from class on Laulima. Also that it is easy to get a hold of the instructor. gaining factual knowledge WHAT I LIKE ABOUT HER COURSE IS THAT IT IS MOSTLY LECTURES AND CLASS DISCUSSION. SO THE ENVIRONMENT BECOMES LIKE AN OHANA AROUND YOUR SURROUNDINGS.EVEN THE ASSIGNMENTS ISN'T REALLY HARD ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS MAKE SURE THAT YOU TURN IT ON TIME. i liked that she took the time to for discussions,she made sure that we understood what she was teaching us and if we didn't she was very avaialabe if we needed help.I liked that we were able to connect with each other in the classroom and view other perspectives. That the instructor doesn't take a side in class. She is informative about both sides and lets each student decide for themselves. I loved how I was told more about our Hawaiian culture. There are many different sayings to what has happened in the past. What I have learned about within this course added more knowledge about my family history and that is what I liked the best. I like the class discussions and watching the videos, with response time after. I really enjoyed the whole course. all of it! I like the fact that the professor taught with passion, yet she was very respectful of her students beliefs. She genuinely wanted to hear others opinions, and she did not outwardly judge others or make then feel inferior. When we got to learn about the real issues of the Hawaiian people. I like the instructor and her passion for teaching. The Mo'olelo was the best and the group discussions. I liked the how the professor wanted to see us succeed in the class. Passionate about the course. Influenced the students about what the course is about, and to apply it to our everyday life. I liked how you kept the students really wanting to learn more about each topic. I liked the whole course and everything covered in it was very educational. I liked that Mrs. Dukelow was so knowledgable in Hawaiian history and made me feel like it was important to be interested and aware of what is happening on our homeland. I enjoyed learning about everything. This class changed my perspective on my Hawaiian culture. I am more aware of how my ancestor lived. watching videos. everything, hawaiian history even though this was a "skim the surface" class was very interesting in all aspects the enthusiasim of the teacher and the in depth information taught. i enjoyed the video examples she displayed and the power points. It was very clear, but it also made you think more then usual. So i was confused more on what was being talked about, but i think that was the whole point in trying to get the student to think more outside of the box, especially when more facts fill in the blank. what I liked best about this course was that it was easy to relate to. I liked the way the instructor mixed up the schedule by showing movies and being interactive.

12. My overall evaluation of this course is...

I learned a great deal from this course and it made me question the status quo. I also found myself interested in things I was not before this course. I would take another course from her. Mahalo Excellent. I enjoyed this class very much. I really enjoyed this course. It really helped me to understand about the Hawaiian culture and history and has made me more interested to further study Hawaiian History. Kumu Kahele was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Her teaching style is very effective. Overall I really enjoyed this course. This class was personally very inspiring and motivating. It made me want to learn more about the history of the Hawaiians and really have an understanding of who we are and where we come from. Very good. I would recommend this course to anyone! It brought up many things about Hawaii that everyone should know! Instructor made easy for me to understand & comprehend all of my lessons and assignments. One of the best classes I have ever taken and one of my favorite instructor. I enjoyed this class I loved it that I enjoyed it and will continue to take classes from Kumu Kaheleonolani Dukelow and I highly recommend it. Love this class!!!! She is awesome!!! i can say i am versed in hawaiian history a little more now than i was before starting the course. really puts things in perspective. 100%/100% I want to take more of her classes. I really enjoy it. This class is a real entertainment in every way and i'd recomend this class to all students interested in hawaiian history. That Mrs. Dukelow is doing a great job teaching this course i could not ask for a better teacher. great course to take parrt in MY OVERALL EVALUATION UPON THIS COURSE AND INSTRUCTOR IS ALL BEAUTIFUL. IT IS HARD FOR A COLLEGE PROFESSOR TO MAKE STUDENTS WANT TO COME TO CLASS. SHE MAKES EVERYONE COME TOGETHER AS IN ONE LEVEL TO UNDERSTAND HER LESSONS. SHE IS A TEACHER THAT TEACHES FROM HER HEART. SHE HAS BEEN IN IT ALL SO SHE UNDERSTANDS ALL THE EXCUSES US STUDENTS CAN MAKE UP, BUT SHE STILL HAS THE PATIENCE TO NOT PASS JUDGEMENT. SHE HAS LIGHT IN HER SOUL SO WHEN YOU ARE SPEAKING TO HER, YOU CAN SEE IT THROUGH HER EYES. HER MANA IS VERY STRONG AND POSITIVE. A DIVINE INSTRUCTOR THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE IN LIFE! SHE GIVES UNITY TO ALL OF US WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT BECAUSE SHE IS SO HUMBLE. I found this class very intresting and awesome.The instructor does really well in her teachings. I would definately recommend this course to others. My overall evaluation of this course is that it rocks! iI got a lot out of this class. This course is important for Hawaii resedents to take. It helps develop a more clear understanding of where Hawaii came from and the termoil that has been overcome. great! Kahele is a wonderful teacher. She is very informed and encourages the students to learn more beyond the class room. She has a great personality and is an effective teacher. pretty good but it was a bit fast paste I enjoy taking Hawaiian Studies and I only wish that I would have been able to take more classes during my time here at MCC. I had the opportunity to learn of the islands of where I grew up. It definately opened me eyes and actually take the time to look around and appreciate the things we have on Maui today. I found the subjects that we covered in class very interesting and the videos were eyecatching. I believe this course with Kumu Kahele the most emotional class I have ever taken yet so far in my academic career. I give this course five out of five stars! Awsome! Awesome. I'd actually take the class again to get more out of it. Overall i liked the course and learned alot from it. I would not change one thing. I loved it. I recommend it to everyone. Specially with this instructor. Overall one of the best instructors here at MCC. Excellent course. Kumu Kahele is an excellent teacher in Hawaiian Studies. Her passion really shows. that what I learned gave me new knowledge. It made me think more on how the issues of the past and events that occurred influenced so much of today. Also I found out the reasons why sovereignty is big in Hawaii. this class was one of the best classes i had this semester only if it was a whole year class credit I would learn a lot more and actually go into depth with each topic. I hope I pass the class so I don't have to take it again. This course is a very educational one with an excellent instructor who is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does. I learned quite alot being in this class and it helped me define who i was and expanded my horizons and thought train on what i really didnt know. Overall this course is a very good one with a very good instructor i would recommend this course to everybody. Excellent. i am so glad i took this course! i learned so much and i am so proud to live here. i too want to help organize the Hawaiian community and stand against what is going on. I loved being in this class. It was my favorite class. It was a very educational class. I would reccomend it to my friends. it was good and very interesting. everyone should take this course b/c its about hawaii and where we live. they need to know and educated themselves with the basics of the hawaiian culture. I think this course was difficult because there was a lot of information to learn. There was a lot of work, but overall I learned a lot and enjoyed this class. Dukelow is an amazing teacher, and she is clear and precise. she does a good job at making her students think. I think that she is a great teacher and very informative about the subject. Best class i have had in years. Learned so much about the place where i live.
