13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Mr. Mitchell is an outstanding instructor and did a great job teaching this course. I would recommend this course to other students, great instructor and course.
Projects were a bit extensive, however Loren Mitchell was always ready to help me and answered alot of questions for me
I learned and developed the writing process. I read the chapters and realized how important it was to understand. Professor Mitchell provided examples. He is like a "human dictionary" when it came to English 100 and he is thorough and encouraging. He provided a way to seek the help a student needed by the materials and power-point messages, and he gave other access to learn the material well. He praised the student for their efforts, he corrected fairly, he explained where the errors were, and he provided each page of identifying where the student could improve on. I don't think I have come across any instructor who possesses so much wisdom and interest in his students the way Professor Mitchell does. Sometimes he encourages the student to really take the time to understand the concepts of each chapter before moving on and I and have recommended his course to other peers. That's because Professor Mitchell understands the individual needs and he will offer help to discuss the matter and is open and unbiased.
I liked that we did not jump right in to writing papers, we learned about how to write them first.

Loren Mitchell is a very devoted English teacher!
I feel that Professor Mitchell teaches excellence, a higher standard because he believes in our abilities. I am encouraged, inspired, and enjoy his techniques. I have to say that Professor Mitchell is absolutely knowledgeable and is supportive in any way possible to make this course work for all students, especially since I have used the tools learned in my other courses and excelled! Thank you.

Assignments and homework due weekly, helped retain discipline.
Professor Mitchell has an obvious passion for teaching. He is highly responsive to all questions or concerns posted by students. He is highly involved in the discussions. He is the most highly skilled, effective and engaged instructor that I have had this semester.
I have met a lot of people in my life time and Mr. Mitchell is by far one of the greatest English Teachers I have had the priviledge to learn from. The college should be grateful for having such a person who loves waking up in the morning to educate his students.
I did not have much confidence in myself to do well in writing. This class has helped my become a little more confident and has taught me good writing skills that will definitely help in my career.
I liked reading short stories from the book. They were interesting. I also liked how we got to choose which essay to write because I understood one story better than the other.

Course grading as far as essays were a bit tough, but I guess it needed to be.
While he is my best instructor, I expect to do the poorest in his class among my 4 classes. After falling ill for a couple of weeks, I never quite regained traction. It became very difficult for me to get motivated to write the required essays. (Though I still have a glimmer of hope to be able turn in late work and squeak by with a passing grade.)

He is a good teacher. However, his grading process is to strict. From my perspective, it seems that, you either pass or fail. There is NO in between. He does know his english and he is good at it.
I enjoyed Mr. Mitchells teaching methods and I also enjoyed his example stories they were funny and a good learning experience.
I think the coure that professor Loren Mitchell teachest is a good class. All activities, projects, and assignments are on the syllabus.
I liked Loren's technique of learning the basic steps of the writing process. I am real pleased as to how he can break the process down so we can understand. To me that is AWESOME! I enjoyed the class activities. The class assignments were good in the beginning, until all hell broke loose and there were essay after essay, after essay. Really frustrating to me! but all in all I seemed to try and pull it together.

Mr. Mitchell did prepare the class and motivated the class via reviewing the topics and class interaction. I feel that he was sincere and took the time to have the students assess their learning process. His class was essentially pleasant and the teaching methods helped me to understand ENG 22 homework assignments. One thing that I learned was to be present in his class because he offered depth and meaning to each topic and the practices helped improve the progression from each chapter. The syllabus was the preparation and as I followed along, I was never behind. This gave me the confidence to do better each time. I would enroll in his class the next semester if it were available. He is also personable. His examples were easy to follow.
I enjoyed learning about the writing process of an essay. It moled me to be a better writer.

He is very relaxed. His assignments are kind of tough, they are doable.
I like the essays and the ways Loren taught. I really learned a lot more than when I first stepped into this class. This class has brought more out of me with writing than I had before, and I really enjoyed it. It has also gave me a new look in pushing to write that children's book or mystery novel I have wanted to write a long time ago.

English has never been my favorite subject. I was never serious nor attending classes in high school. What I appreciate about Mr. Mitchell is that he taught me the discipline to complete an assignment with confidence. I began to read more and look at sentence structure more closely. When he corrected the errors, I understood the mistakes and reviewed the lesson. Secondly, I used a tutor. Lastly, I now have the skills in English writing and grammar that did not make sense before. He is an excellent teacher!
I see a big difference in my writing from when I first started the class till now :).
I am more comfortable talking in front of class and giving speeches. It really reflected in my other classes

Meeting my classmates, and getting to know them a little bit better, and how we all come to gather to help one another.
This class was interesting and pushed me to become a better writer. I think that if taken at the beginning of your college career, Prof. Mitchell and the course material provide a great foundation for success in future classes.
All the assignments were great practice for learning the writing skills we covered in our readings. I enjoyed reading the short stories and completing the literary analysis essays. Those helped me a lot with my critical reading skills and analytical writing skills. Also, the weekly discussion board postings and Bedford Handbook exercises were great practice for applying what we read in the book.
They were all very meaningful and relevant; I dislike doing bogus busy work!
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
Cut down on some of the assignments, I felt so overwhelmed with all the essay's that was due every week it took up most of my time and made me fall behind on some of my other classes.
I honestly was surprised at how challenging this course was! For a 100 level course I think that a lot is required of the students. I do like to be challenged but I think that the English Dept. expectations/requirements are too high!! I think that for students straight out of public high school, the expectation is near perfection. I understand that the class is designed to prepare students for their college careers, but I think it might turn a lot of students off writing and make them feel inadequate. I am a college graduate and have always been a good student (I also only had a total of 9 credits this semester and am not working) and I found it challenging! Maybe a more "growth oriented" approach or a less detail-oriented grading system might benefit and encourage students in the long-run! Writing is very challenging and a life long learning process! Also, maybe one less paper so there is more time at the end for the more heavily weighted research paper
Providing a tutor or some other way of communication with someone who could edit papers other than peers would be excellent. I had a very difficult time improving my essays because the peer reviews were inefficient. Its a great concept to have a person edit their peer's essay for the practice, but the peers don't have as trained an eye as a professor or other english tutor does.
Whoa! So much to cover in a short amount of time. No; he is great at even giving us a little break this week! Make it mandatory first semester class so you know how to really write from the start!

Prof. Mitchell is a very understanding and supportive teacher. His standards are high but he is very accessible to his students. The nature of online courses does add a little more challenge to stay connected and search out any help needed, but overall I really enjoyed his class!
This course helped me write much more effectively. I think it should be a requirement for all students to take some kind of writing course during the first semester of college.
Professor Loren is the kind of instructor you would like all of your teachers to be! He's quick, he always provides immediate feedback; his feedback is not made to feel like you'll never succeed but only encourages you to do better!Two thumbs up and if I had more, they'd be up too! :)

I like when he takes time explaining how to do our writing the rite way. He makes sure we understand what we are learning and he gives us time to do our essays. He also explains how our finals may be like for the heads up.
I liked the way he broke everything down in seperate assignments where I could understand as a student. He was very thorough in his teachings. I very much so enjoyed Mr. Loren's class.
I learned many things on how to write a good essay. I did not know that there were so many rules to writing an essay, but I am glad I learned them because I will need it for my future endeavors.

Loren Michell's teaching style is descriptive but simple. This made his class enjoyable for me. But I had trouble contacting him through email, and getting his number to ask for clarification on the essay assignments. He has a great uplifting personality which helped me get through his class.
I enjoyed developing how to write an essay. Practicing the basic steps helped to improve my writing skills. Online homework was a good way to allow students to learn different word usages and word structure.

Put a computer with internet access in the room. It made it very hard for Professor Loren to prove points or show examples because of the lack of a computer. There is no excuse why every room in this school should have computers.

Prof. Loren is a very good professor who focuses on the key aspects of writing. It is thanks to his teachings that i am able to write as well as i do now.

Prof. Loren is a very organized and clear professor which makes learning the material easy and straightforward. Although i ended up flaking out due to my own faults, he is very good at what he does and is someone who i would recommend to other students. Keep up the good work Loren!
Mr. Mitchell is a great and wonderful person, who I enjoyed having as and English teacher. He taught me a lot and helped me understand the library system, which has been very useful to me in all my other classes. Thank you very much Mr. Mitchell!

less homework, we had way to much online home work up to 150 questions and we would have to do 1 essay per week with ll materials
Start to use powerpoint visuals a little earlier. More practice exercises in class. Have him go around like he has, but more often, because it demonstrated his interest in the students development and thinking process on the lesson. Unfortunately, there were a few distractions from students who used the class to talk story instead of paying attention to the lesson. His style of teaching was easy, clear and well-defined.
I wouldn't change anytyhing
I think it would be more helpful if the homework assignment on line is assigned after we review the chapter with him in class. I has a difficult time getting the homework correct when I do it before we go over it in class.

I would have more group activities for the upcoming assignments. Our second to the last essay that we wrote we did several group activites. This was helpful to take in the material & use when we write our own essay.
21. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Teaching methods were excellent if a student wanted to be motivated. He used clear, basic reasoning in understanding the lessons and he prepared the class to go further by using the online exercises. He taught and believed that students have the potential to excel. He related well, except some students were behaving disrespectfully, such as, talking a lot between themselves, caused distrations, and I became annoyed by their behavior, yet, Mr. Mitchell was consistent and went on with the lessons. Right on!

I feel that his teaching method was very helpful and motivating. I enjoyed all the stories and examples he told when he was giving the class examples. I found it very helpful when he replies to my emails. He was always available before of after work when I had questions.
Lorens teaching method is really good and helpful. The way he goes through each thing and doesn't just give assignments in the book i really liked. The way he taught the class has made me a better writer in so many ways.
I think he is a really good teacher. Very friendly and helpful. He know what he's doing and always want his students to do the best they could.

If I have a chance to have him in the future, I would want to take his class. The handouts were well defined, especially the Shaka format. He took his time by simply using basic concepts, he answered questions from the students, and was thorough with the lessons. I think he also gave great examples to follow by using other students learning process. I borrowed the examples and it made me feel confident. I got it. I still have errors, but he always writes something positive, and allows the students to rewrite the assignment. I felt encouraged because I could improve my writing skills and strive to improve from the error. What I appreciate from Mr. Mitchell is that he was definitely professional, honest and approachable.

I absolutely enjoyed Professor Mitchell's teaching methods. It was somewhat of a difficult class for me, but in the end,it was well worth it.

Mr. Mitchell has a great method. His teachings are very clear. He was always there to talk and ask questions. He was very helpful. Though his grading is very harsh he always had an explanation.
It is good, but many of us are confused sometimes. The teacher contradicts himself a lot.

I personally did not like the topics of what we had to write about. The first and last were not that bad because we kind of get to chose. The rest came from the POV book which to me was sometimes hard to understand. I couldn't really come up with anything better so lol, I guess its cool.
a. The only improvement I would make is being clearer towards the end of the class when the research paper comes up. It was hard to get started because the assignment wasn't given at a very specific time. b. I wouldn't change anything aside from the last paper, the course was very clear and well organized.

I love Mr. Mitchell's class. We came to his class to learn and instead of shoving in our face how much we didn't know, he gave us the chance to improve ourselves. This was an awesome class.

I wouldn't do a thing to improve. However, things got rough at a certain point, but the teacher was always willing to help.
I would inforce more group activities only because when we discussed as a group, i was able to develop ideas of my own by listening to my colleagues opinions! I would change the coursework, and take out the bedfordhandbook exercises because i would rather have it explained to me by the teacher.
I would change the class building. The portables are falling apart but that is no fault of the instructors. Loren Mitchell is awesome. I would not change his course. Everything in terms of work was planned out to the the day andI think that is the best part. Everything that he expected from us as students was told in the syllabus and homework guidelines.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
I really like Professor Loren and his teaching style. He is very fair and lets you know right up front what is expected of us. I feel that he truly wants us to learn and succeed rather then just to test our skills. His great attitude and his happy-go-luckiness made for a optimal learning experience for me. He explained the writing process to me in such a way that I actually understood it this time around. I don't write perfectly, but I am sure a lot better now then I was when I first started the semester.
The methods were perfect for me. The one time we did talk about the story in a circle didn't end as well as other days had though. It was hard to focus and take notes when I was busy worrying about how I looked.

Mr. Mitchell taught me a lot about writing this semester. He made me feel like it was easier and helped me overcome some of the hurdles I had in writing. Now I can successfully write better for all my classes and quite possibly my future job applications. Not to mention, writing these critiques for my classes.
Absolutely. I will always make comma mistakes, but I am confident that any future papers I write will be better after having taken this class.

Totally yes. I honestly must say that i didn't know it was actually really hard to write an essay. I've learned how to cite sources, and also to check my grammar. I've learned to conduct different tyoes of essays, and i feel accomplished. When i got an 97% on one of my essays, i was very pleased because i had worked hard to perfect it any way that i could.

I found at times that we were racing to complete the course requirements of six essays, online work, and revising on time. I personally felt overwhelmed from the time the first essay was assigned. Every class something major was due!

This teacher was very real and down to earth, someone we can all feel comfortable with, but was still stern about teaching.

I would have more quizzes on the sentence skills from the book to ensure that the students are actually reading and understanding. This way, people will do better on their essays, and as they continue lessons from the book,they will improve as the semester goes by.
I would spend more time on the basic english concepts for those who are non-traditional students and need some review.

I would change absolutely nothing. this class was recommended to me by a friend who had enjoyed the class. Now I know why, and will recommend this to any of my friends wanting to take English 100.
I believe there isn't much room for improvement in this course. Although I would have had the library orientation at the beginning of the semester vs the middle or end of the semester, I am aware there are too many students attending this campus to make that a possibility.
I would probably take more than one class period to thoroughly talk about a short story to get the insides of what everyone clearly thinks about it. So that it would be less stressful on a student to try and understand everything on his or her own. To get everything clearly stated in just one hour is not enough time. More than one class period would be better.
a. I would use grammar textbook. b. I would change that online homework to regular homework.
I think student should have the opportunity to revise their paper. Sometimes the few mistakes made cause the student to fail.
I would lessen the amount of handouts because a lot of them can be found in the book. And I would use a better peer review sheet because the current one seems not as useful as it could be as far constructive criticism goes.

a. I would allow for more classroom activities. For example, class presentations could really bring this class to a new level. While perfecting our writing skills, the students could also benefit by practicing speech skills. b. Other than a lack of classroom activities, Professor Mitchell's handled the class with superb expertise.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Very good.
I like FANBOYS. It's an easy way to remember when to put commas. Also, the citation excercises were helpful. He also goes around the class and asks students how thier essay progress is going. This is a very helpful method because some students are too shy to ask in front of the class, and they end up not getting the help they need.
I think Mr. Mitchell did an excellent job this semester. He challenges us and I think this was the most difficult class I've ever taken at HCC. However, I learned so much and I was never bored in his class. He is an excellent teacher and I hope to have more teachers like him in the future.
Mr. Mitchell was very interested in every student's progress which shows each time he takes time to sit with students and offer help.
Professor Mitchell did an excellent job teaching this course. He was knowledgeable in the subject and presented the material well. English can be a boring subject, however I enjoyed learning this semester. Thanks Professor Mitchell.

I think my teachers methods were adequate. I enjoyed all the classroom discussions and the personal attention my teacher gave to all the students in my class.
I think that his teaching methods are excellent. The way that he makes a mandatory date for the rough draft of essays to be turned in really helps out. It helped to get a head start on revision for the final draft. I don't know of many teachers that even care that a rough draft is turned in. His methods are helpful in clearly understanding what has to be done and how to do it.

I enjoyed the fact that the class was not entirely lecture-style. The group work and peer review sessions were very helpful. We sometimes went off-topic, especially when doing group discussions, but in the end the entire discussion as a whole intrigued me because I became curious to learn more about the different topics we ended up discussing.
Mr. Mitchell is a great instructor. I feel his course prepared me for all other future college courses.

Yes. In high school, I learned the very basic skills. Now, I know how to write better and how to plan out an essay to make sure that it will turn out to be a good essay. I learned subject verb agreements, as well as many other writing techniques.
Mr. Mitchell has taught me the basics of writing properly which will assist me in my current career and help me with college.

Without a doubt, he has dramatically improved the writing skills of every student within my class. The notes and advice he gave were tremendously beneficial and formatted in a way that every student grew as a writer and as an individual.

Instructor Loren put alot of energy into grading and providing comments that helped me learn. In my opinion, the instructor was the best instructor that I had this semester, in that he put alot of effort in providing feedback.
He goes off topic at times when we could be learning more; however, some interesting stories.
My teacher was very understanding and helped me when I felt overwhelmed and overstressed. I enjoyed his class very much and would recommend his class to friends and family now and in the future.
Loren is by far the best professor that I had this semester. He is one of the few professors that I came across that actually has true passion for his teachings. I feel that his methods and ways of teaching were excellent. I honestly feel that nothing went wrong, everything went quite perfect. The only thing would be the essays after essays, with out a break. But hey thats the challenge I had to prepare myself for anyway. He made class interesting especially with mixing in some of his personal experiences with the lectures. I wish I had more teachers that shared the same passion as he does for his teachings. I really enjoyed this semester. He made learning grammar skills interesting and worth the while.

I did not like the negative comments that were made by the instructor of the instructor's other class who were not as good as writing essays as our class was. i believe that we are all here to learn.we all begin at different levels and it should not be used to define who we are based on our essay writing abilities.

If i was the teacher in ENG 20W i might only have to change the amount of time spent in class. Each class goes by so fast, there's never enough time to really get into an assignment and then the class is over. Other then that i really enjoyed and felt i am ready for any challenge. My instructor was amazing he always made time for each of his students for any questions. He made sure when giving any assignments out before leaving class, every student new how to do the assignment. Im very confident in Writing and i give him the gratitude for that.

Make more connections to the students at their level. Be "hip" as one would say. Nothing really needs to be changed because what I observed everything was fine. If there is any change it would be for the good.

Nothing, Loren did a god job
I would not change anything about this course. It is a good challenge for all of us! I would like to have more group projects and get together sessions because I noticed that I get a better understanding of our assignments while working together with my classmates because I can see their input.
I would create more in-class group discussions and then follow up with the professor. By doing this it will help to ensure that all students will have a clear understanding on the concepts studied.

I would change the attendance policy, I would allow students to be able to hand in late work by another certain date given and allow some slips if already used up the 3 absences.
I think being able to cover more of the material might be good. It is always good to ask questions and such, but being prepared for those questions might be better. I feel like there was not enough time to teach all that was needed for the class to fully understand and comprehend what was going on.

I think that Mr.Mitchell, is a really good professor. His teaching styles deals mostly with class discussions, and I feel that by having "class discussions" it helps myself and other students to get involved and obtain an understanding of the work given. I feel that the essays being back to back was very difficult. I could not concentrate on the given assignments because we were always doing two at a time. This was VERY difficult!
Loren is a great teacher
I would do 5 essays (instead of 6) and incorporate more in-class writing exercises.
I would be less lenient, it is a college course and students need to be challenged. Students should be able to complete the assignments when they are due.

Mr. Mitchell was a very good teacher and made it comfortable to be around him but I do think that his revising was way to critical. He acted more like an editor than a English teacher.

The one major change I would like to see is the elimination of the in-class writing examination. I thought it was an inaccurate and unfair evaluation of a student's writing skills.
HCC students are lucky to have a teacher like him. His grading is fair.

Excellent teacher and keep up the good work.
The instructor was very helpful. When I was out sick he made every effort he could to help me catch up on my assignments and emailed some of the materials to me. He also let us know that if we needed the help, his door was always open.
