7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Covering the text we read in class and going over hojas de trabajo together in class
I learned how to do a proper analysis of a text and communicate using literary terms. I improved my Spanish by reading different works and gained a better cultural perspective.
It was interesting to learn about how the lives of people were in the times in the book. It was very helpful that he had a good knowledge of history also.
Analyzing the texts in class. This provided me a better understanding of the text.
Class discussion
group work, review of chapters
I think some of the most valuable aspects were the class discussions. Reading the literature and trying to break it down on your own is one thing and it helps with reading comprehension but the discussion in class stimulates a different way of thinking and understanding the material. I think writing the paper was valuable because it was very challenging and I personally have never written that long of a paper in Spanish before it was good experience.
I liked the class presentations and the literature he chose for the course was excellent.
The entire material was very valuable. Benito Quintana did an outstanding job in teaching the course and it could not get any better than that! I loved the class and always looked forward to each lecture!

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
.
I enjoyed learning the history of Spanish literature.
It was good reading and historically interesting
All the aspects of the course were great. This class is the best class that I have taken at UH. Personally, I don't like reading, specially when the readings are wrote in old Spanish or English. However, this class made me appreciate the contribution of Spanish Literature to the world. I enjoyed every book that we read.
loved the readings!
group work, PMC, Celestina, Lucanor, Retablo
In class discussions and break down of the material
The readings, lectures, materials, and Benito's teaching style were fantastic.
Being able to read actual literature from Spain
13. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
some of the text were too difficult and impossible to read in such a short time frame. Some off the discussion would be hard to keep up with, and this one girl kept interrupting the lecture.
N/A
There was one student that always over powered him.
This class have a perfect structure. However, I think that a bigger classroom would be appropriate for the class.
TEN PAGE PAPER COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. made me want to never take another spanish class. though he did a great job of giving help and feedback.
El libro de buen amor, Romances, Maria de Zayas
Writing the paper, and still having to study for a final.
Can't say I disliked anything because the entire class was perfect!

I know that a lot of students will like to have more opportunities to take one of Dr. Quintana classes. However, the Spanish department only offers a a limited amount of classes instructed by Dr. Quintana, and a small number of seats available per class. I know several students, including myself, that tried for several semesters to have a seat on one of his classes but the space was filled rapidly. In other words, I think that we will benefit if the department offers more classes instructed by Dr. Quintana.
loved the course minus the ten page paper. Professor was fun to be in class with and had great knowledge of the material! glad i took it
I think there were too many books and things to read. Second half of the semester made it harder to do the readings. I recommend towards the end of the semester, instead of the readings I think it's helpful to work on the literary analysis.
I enjoyed the class a lot! It was my hardest class but kept you engaged the whole time.
Thanks professor Quintana! I had an amazing time in class and I gained new insights into the Spanish and Latin American culture!

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Todo. Todos los aspectos tratados fueron muy interesantes y aprendí mucho.
I think the course was really organized. I also appreciate the synopsis of the important works, their themes, etc. that the instructor gave two times (before masters exam and after). The critical articles were concise, nbot excessive and very useful in finding alternative interpretations of the plays.
The majority of the articles were very helpful and provided a complete, all-encompassing base for Spanish Golden Age theater. I also gained more knowledge and clarified any confusion when we discussed them in class.
I felt I gained a better understanding of the plays during our class discussions. The plays were challenging to read and I feel like Prof. Quintana's explanations made things much clearer in my mind. His insight and knowledge was very valuable.
The discussion groups and the homework assignments were very valuable.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
nada
The presentations at the end of the semester on our final projects. The only reason this is useful is it makes us start our papers earlier than a few days before the deadline. Other than that, we are generally burnt out and don´t pay attention or get anything out of it unless the instructor talks intermittently throughout. 18 page paper... too much.
Although presenting characters from various plays was a fun exercise, I would have been able to use that time to work on my final research paper.

10. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Como el curso es muy largo, falta de verdad tiempo para ver todo detenidamente. Pero el profesor Quintana lo hace muy bien enfocándose en lo más importante.
There are many tangents that the class we off on. But, on the other hand, a lot of them were useful and pertinent towards the course.
I would recommend having students prepare their discussion questions the week before they present their articles. They could pass out their discussion questions to the class and then more people would be able to contribute information. I noticed that some of my classmates would become intimidated by the size of some of the articles and not read them. If they had the discussion questions ahead of time, they would be able to contribute more during class discussions. I wish we had time to discuss every article assigned for homework because Professor Quintana obviously put a lot of consideration into them and I would have like to have gone over them.
The plays were difficult to read and I feel like if we had more than one week per play we would have been able to absorb the material better. Also, I realize that it's not necessarily feasible, but I would have loved to watch the performance of one of our plays even on video. I realize that they are hard to come by even in video format but it's something that would have helped me visualize what we read and gain a different perspective.

I really enjoyed this course and the professor who taught it. He is passionate about the material and this is reflected on the class discussions and in getting our interest during the class.
I think UH should give Professor Quintana a grant to update his video resources and/or send a send a Spanish theater troupe to perform some of the plays live. Maybe even students could perform entremeses for a Spanish cultural event and then write one ten page paper instead of a twenty page paper.
Overall, I appreciated learning from Prof. Quintana's expertise on the Siglo de Oro plays. He presented the information very clearly and interestingly. The activities he gave us were helpful in allowing us to better understand the plays. I also appreciated Prof. Quintana's enthusiasm for the subject. It was a challenging class but I'm glad I took it. I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed taking this course with Dr. Quintana because he is very knowledgeable. He is also very encouraging and has a lot of resources to share.

7. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Instead of a presenting our research papers, the last weeks of class should be dedicated to peer-led writing workshops in which students revise and edit each others' and their own papers.
The instructor could provide a better break down of the grade
Nothing, the way this course was taught was extremely beneficial for both learning and for enjoying a course.
I really loved the interactive portions, such as presentations and the creative presentations. More of those would be nice. Also, the creative writing portion was very fun, more of that could be useful in using the language.
Even more multi-media.
Please make it more oral oriented. Some students felt that this course had a large chunk of it focused on a writing aspect that's misleading of its designation.
I think the class would be better if there was more lessons on grammar. We spent the majority of the time talking which is helpful, but not enough time writing in class.
Lets bring some of our own music to class, demand earlier final paper initiation, more emphasis on blog participation.

class discussions
The discussions
The oral communication was interesting
The conversations in class were very stimulating and encouraging for speaking. I also liked the manner in which the majority of our grades were conducted, and the writing assignments left us open to choose what we wanted to write on.
The creative aspects.
class discussion and debate in Spanish. Very fun and productive at the same time.
The open communication between the students. I liked the way the professor pretty much turned the class over to us.
I liked readings assigned at the beginning of the semester.
Performing in front of other students, great discussions of current events, music to start the class, awesome teacher and colleagues.
the structure of the class
12. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
It was a lot of writing for a non writing intensive course
blogs
I never really knew how I stood grade-wise in the class
The excessive writing in a non writing intensive course
Trying to get 5/5 on daily participation.
N/A
The emphasis on MLA. But it IS necessary I suppose.
The grading criteria for class participation.
I didn't like how participation and speaking was such a huge percentage of the grading process. I think a student can be actively participating if they attend class even if they are not constantly talking in class.
Final Paper ;( Didn't see that coming.
how participation was graded
13. What changes would you make in the readings?
put them into a packet for students to purchase
Discuss them more, or do more assignments or something at had to do with them. Some times they seemed a little out of place because we didn't do too much with them except read them at the beginning of the semester,
More interesting materials
More ancient stories. Cervantes, etc...
Nothing.
Readings from a greater amount of spanish-speaking countries.
None
No changes.
N/A
14. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
More peer editing workshops
Clearer guidelines and less assignments
NONE! The way this assignments were conducted was PERFECT.
Nothing.
Less emphasis on MLA
I would reduce them.
I would not require a blog due each week. Students schedules outside of class are already very busy with other things and requiring online homework due each week along with the other assignments is going overboard.
Break up the final paper into 2
by not giving a 15 page paper since the class is not a WI
15. Other comments:
Overall a great course. Dr. Quintana is a passionate and dedicated professor and exhibited this in every class. I give him an A.
Out of all my Spanish classes this semester I always looked forward to going to 403. It was an extremely difficult semester, and the general atmosphere in that class was very helpful and was not unnecessarily overwhelming or stressfull
The instructor is very knowledgeable and quite passionate about the subject. However, the grading was extremely harsh in terms of participation and minor errors in proper citation.
I loved the course, the teacher was awesome, and it was BY FAR the most beneficial Spanish class I took during my UH Manoa undergrad.
Great and fun class!
Great teacher, devoted to our education. I would suggest this class to freinds.
Overall, a great course to learn a lot from. We covered a variety of latin-related content and important topics in general. I can't believe the semester is almost over!
Overall this was a very good class but basing grades off of how much student's participated in class discussion didn't seem fair.
Surprisingly painless considering how high the bar was set. Dr. Quintana really enjoys his craft and has much to offer students. A+
Great class

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I liked how the class was in conjunction with Dr.Beaule's class. It allowed for more information to be shared
Las presentaciones sobre un tema anteriormente discutido en la clase porque me han dado práctica y más experiencia con dirigir una discusión en clase.
The presentations we made in class helped me gain an understanding of the material.
I enjoyed the exchange of ideas with the other class.
I liked that Prof. Quintana has us review the literature in this field with a critical eye, with specific questions in mind, and that he reminded us often to do so.
The topic of the course is very interesting and important!
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I felt at times we went off topic, which became confusing
La cantidad superflua de artículos no era necesaria. Apenas los discutíamos en clase por la falta de tiempo, lo cual era muy frustrante. Los más importantes deben escogerse y durante la clase ha de discutirlos todos por lo menos 5-10 minutos.
Long discussions with no activities.
Everything in this course had meaning to our discussions and writing assignments.
There was too much reading for this class. Some articles we were not able to discuss in class and, in general, it was more reading than is reasonable per week.
Too much reading, but it is understanding. Otherwise we can not get the idea of the course. The themes are really interesting but require a lot of time to assimilate all the concepts. Maybe the time assigned to the course is the problem or the length of it.

Las discusiones y oir al profe hablar de los temas.
I enjoyed the presentations and class discussion lead by fellow classmates.
I actually enjoyed the discussion being led by one student per week because we were able to see different perspectives on the topics we were examining.
The interacting aspect of the course. Not only the teacher was speaking all the time. It is a very good type of exercise, because later you can use the abilities develop through the course for example discussing a topic.
18. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Los artículos teóricos.
It is difficult to read complicated works as well as the articles on top of our other responsibilities. Maybe one way that would encourage us to maintain a priority on the reading is if we are assigned a few questions ahead of time to answer while reading. I know this seems elementary. However, if we do this then we will be practicing for the masters exam by writing and we will have samples of writing to bring to others in the department that may help critique our style/grammar.
n/a
I think the team teaching approach is good in general but I didn't feel it was particularly helpful in this class. The questions were good but I feel I would have been able to get more out of them were we given time to reflect on them before coming together as a class and discuss them. Unfortunately, more often than not, the undergrad students I worked with had not read the material at all and so were not able to participate in our small group discussions. Maybe if we were given the questions ahead of time, they might have done the readings.
The long reading

Dr. Quintana is very knowledgeable and takes the time to meet with us outside of class to discuss assignments. He recommends valuable resources and encourages us to expand our knowledge on the subject matter.
Overall, I felt that it took a while for me to get a good grasp of the general idea of the topic of the class. Despite having been given an overview during the first day of class, I felt that the objective of the course revealed itself much too slowly as the semester progressed. Possibly if Prof. Quintana were to have given us a little bit more information via small lectures during each class to frame the topics/class, rather than waiting for the students to bring up questions or discuss the articles, I would have felt that I grasped the concepts much better. By the end of the semester I felt I understood the big picture but I wish the realization came much sooner.
He is a very good teacher. I like him, even so sometimes we get too much work with he course.

When it came towards the end of the semester when we were all working on our final papers, Benito would go through little "MLA tutorials" on the computer to work out any technical kinks we may have been encountering in our work. I also feel that assigning many short stories makes the students feel the work is more doable and, thus, more students read the material and we have more productive class discussions. I was also relieved to see Benito choose other writing besides stories (newspaper articles) to practice our Spanish language skills. I think this is an important aspect that is oftentimes left out of the curriculum. We also spent a great deal of time discussing modern issues of society that allowed us to learn how to express our opinions and broaden our vocabularies.
speaking spanish in class
The practice of public speaking and research essay writing.
class discussions, especially those that were related to real world issues because we were then challenged to expand our vocabulary outside of the words we use to discuss literature.
The variety of topics discussed in class helped me relate concepts that I had learned before or was learning in another class.
The readings and oral activities were the most valuable.
Creative writing and discussions, along with the presentations.
I thought the reading and writing assignments were most valuable because it really improved my vocabulary and grammar.
Daily readings and discussion helped expose me to different writers and practice conversational skills.
Both, speaking and writing. The class schedule was set up in a way to effectively practice our conversational skills as well as compositional skills
research projects; learning how to use valuable resources and where to locate them while projecting your ideas and analysees.
i felt the class discussions and participation were most valuable.
Feedback from the written papers that we did.
Blogs, papers, the creative projects
Recovering grammar and practicing speaking
Readings and discussions.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
The fact that you dont really know if you are improving in the coversation part.
the weekly readings. sometimes i felt as if though we went weeks without discussing the readings which are required.
Everything had educational value.
Reading some material that we never went over in class
I thought the library lesson and exercise wasn't that useful because I had done it before in Spanish 302.
everything was valuable
the final paper i found least valuable.
The lack of conversation in some classes, and not knowing which readings to have prepared for that day.
Daily readings for the week weren't that helpful especially when we did not discuss them.
Blogs.

12. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
None.
Its a really good course.
The most valuable aspect of the class was merely the fact that he was willing to answer our questions. While there are a fair amount of things that ought to be expected of a university student, when an instructor finds the majority of his or her students do not know how to do something that the class requires then what good does it do to simply scold the students and give them a "you need to reference A or B and figure it out yourself." I feel in the university we have forgotten that the point of having a class is for instructing which includes asking questions. If we resort to making our students figure everything out on their own then what is the purpose of the student-professor relationship in the classroom? I really appreciated the time Benito took to go over technicalities involving the MLA format, technicalities that oftentimes the manuals don't necessarily cover clearly enough for the student. I appreciated Benito's flexibility in meeting with us as many of us have other obligations during office hours or work commitments, etc. I feel he is one of the few professors who actually have the intent to help his students learn the skills needed to succeed in the future as opposed to several others who are more concerned about obtaining tenure or working on their publications, etc. Benito truly treats his students as adults which I believe in turn makes us as students more motivated to do well in his class. His positive teaching style and openness facilitates an extremely productive academic environment, one which many other instructors and students would benefit from at this level of education.
Perhaps breaking up into smaller groups during class to encourage more participation and general confidence in conversation.
This course should have either more assignments or more tests to help improve grades.
More conversation could help.
forced speaking like in the beginning of the course when someone wouldn't say anything; assign a project or little research for following day
Maybe do voice recording exercises. Maybe watch a movie outside the class and discuss comprehension of the movie and it's content as well as some of the readings.
He could include more contemporary reading material or news, politics, etc. instead of just literature.
He's awesome!
Teaching is excellent. Need more active student participation.

17. Other comments:
This class was very enjoyable. I learned a lot.
i never felt afraid to speak in this class and i felt the Dr. Quintana maintains a very relaxed and comfortable class atmosphere.
It is a very interesting class and well taught. I enjoyed the diversity of topics that were discussed.
One of the best classes I have taken in the Spanish department!
This is the third class that I've had him as a teacher and I've learned so much every time. He is great and humble teacher.
I think that students should be discouraged from reading from their papers during the final presentations, or we should focus more on how to read from papers in a professional environment.
Great class! I'm glad I got to take this class because I learned a lot more about the language and culture that I haven't studied in my other Spanish classes. The material we learned about grammar was important to know and I'm glad I got to broaden my understanding. Thank you for taking the time to go over this and writing (where to place commas, paper formatting, etc.)!
Perhaps be more clear about assignments/readings due for the next class. Although it is on the syllabus, there seemed to be some confusion about what was assigned to read. Overall, I really enjoyed this class!
