13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Knowledgable but didn't have enough control over most of her students to make sure they were prepared for discussion.
She was an amazing professor and made the class not too hard yet still challenging. I could tell she liked to teach as well.
great, thought the class was interesting and she did a good job of keeping the class discussions on point and free flowing
She was one of my favorite teachers through out my 3 years here at UH. She was very connected, educated and passionate about the material that she taught, which really does make a huge difference to the students. She always wanted to make sure we were all on the same page and wanted to help in any way possible.
She is a great professor that is very easy to understand even for a person like me who have little knowledge about certain topics that were discussed in class. She is very approachable and helps students become better writers.
excellent professor and knew the subject well. She was helpful whenever needed and willing to help students.
She is very knowledgeable and could answer all of our questions without a problem. But I felt at times that she wasn't encouraging of an open discussion. I felt that if the discussion didn't go exactly the way she had planned it for that class then she would cut us off so we would talk about what she thought we should be discussing

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The extended blog assignment was a lot more interesting and less stressful than writing another paper.
I liked how we just had to write a few papers and the majority was discussion.
i thought the third section on food system was the most interesting because it relates to my everyday life.
I really liked the last section of the course on food systems, I learned so much, that I will take with me continuing through out my life-- as well as try to share the knowledge so that my friends and family can be more informed as well.
The blog posts that we had to do were different and fun. Doing these were so much better than writing more essays to make up for it. It was more casual so I felt that I could better express myself in a different way than essays.
Blogging and in class discussions.
I liked that she pulled chapters and other readings from different sources to help us understand what the book was getting at if it was lacking in a certain area
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The class is an AMST class but some of the papers that were assigned were more English related and analytical rather than concerning the central topics. I feel that student led discussions take away from learning the central topics in exchange for reducing the load of the instructor and giving students experience with oral communication.
I did not like the readings that much. Specifically Green Illusions.
I didnt care for the second section on green energy and the environment. Only because the assaigned book, Green Illusions, was somewhat confusing and difficult to read and comprehend at times
Wasn't a big fan of the first section on corporations, or maybe just the book I didn't enjoy. It was difficult for me to read and stay interested.
The amount of reading we had to do for every class. It was very time consuming for my busy school and work schedule.
The last book.
Weekly blog posts were terrible. I would have much rather had a 4th paper than weekly blog posts. Especially because they were due Friday before class not on the weekend like all of my other classes that required blog posts. I also like WordPress because it was a nice website but it would have been nice to have all of my classes in the same place
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The topics and books selected to cover them were well picked except for "All Over Creation" by Ruth Ozeki which I felt was the easiest to read but also had the least content related to the central topic. Three papers and one extended blog post was a good choice instead of four papers. The instructor didn't enforce or encourage students to read in an effective way. Quizzes about the readings every day would probably have helped.
Great course for anyone to take.
Interesting course, would recommend it to others looking for a WI course
Yuka did an amazing job at stimulating all of us and she has inspired me to be a better writer as well as research into topics that I know very little about. I am thankful that I got to experience this class during my last semester of college.
Great class that covered important issues in America; Politics/Corporations, Sustainability issues, and Food systems. I was least interested in politics and most interested in the green movement and food systems.
helpful and learned a lot. Experienced a different type of WI
18. Other comments:
The class was pretty good but had a few bad aspects that are easy to change.
interesting class and professor did a good job IMO. I learned a lot of new things that are applicable to the real world.
Yuka was very kind and helpful throughout the entire course. I would hope to have more professors like Yuka.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is very educated in everything that she teaches and will always know if you did not do the readings. In the beginning of the semester she will warn you about how much readings you will be asked to write about being that it is a writing intensive. However, if you come to class and participate every class you it will feel as though the homework is easy. She will definetly take care of you if you show her that you care about what she teaches.
Perhaps one of the best instructors I have had here at UH. She is very easy to communicate with, she makes the class work very clear and easy to keep up with, and she is very kind!
Yuka does a great job connecting material to real life situations and points out things in a different perspective.
a well educated assistant in the course she is teaching. I learned alot, especially about domestic issues in America and other countries. The course she is teaching is thought provoking. She encourages to participate in her class and facilitate discussion.
she is well knowlegeable and her power points and discussion questions are very helpful
Very good teacher, I liked her unorthodox approach to the class with the blogs and the class discussions. My only complaint is that I feel that she was too lenient when the class did not prepare for discussion. I don't know if this would reflect on our participation grades, but I expected to be reprimanded for not doing my homework. But Yuka is a great teacher, one of the best I've had at UH and I would definitely take a class from her if I had the chance again.
that she knew the content that was required and made it easy coming to class everyday. She got everyone eager to do talk and take part in discussion.
Good teacher, very patient with students and very approachable to ask for help!
Professor Polovina is a wonderful professor who cares for her students and is very knowledgeable in the topics in which she teaches. I honestly would take another course taught by her because she makes learning fun, but also feeds us a lot of information. Professor Polovina is not intimidating and is very down-to-earth making students comfortable in her presence.
She is one of the most enthusiastic instructors I've ever experienced. It was more about her getting everyone to understand than it was just putting the material out there.
Excellent teacher. Very excited when it comes to course content, and encouraging to go the extra mile with assignments. Easy to talk to and discuss the topic at hand.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Honestly I had to say that the most interesting part was EVERYTHING! The class room is really comftorable and easy to speak out about any potential problems.
Writing papers
I liked when we talked about the alternative energy and how much it is really doing for the environment and the society.
The aspects of the course I liked best is the group discussions. Yuka encourages her students to participate and have an incite on our discussion.
the discussions
I liked the issues we covered in the class; corporate personhood, truths behind green energy and the food issues we covered were all very interesting. I got to learn more about those subjects and it has helped me make better decisions politically and personally, and all of them were very enlightening.
The fact that we were able to be comfortable in our own skin and with our own words. We were able to say something and took constructive criticism.
I liked how it was divided into different units because then we knew what we were going to be learning at each of the units.
I really enjoy the discussions. I am typically not one who likes to talk much, but the discussions help me further my learning and provides different perspectives for me.
The class discussions and group activities.
I enjoyed the blogging, as they gave me a chance to put my thoughts and opinions as well as content I learned out in the open without having to actually say anything. When I did need to say things, the blogging helped to organize my thoughts which made for more interesting discussion.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The only thing I would want to change was the first book. I totally understood where the author was coming from but the style of reading was too forceful.
The amount of reading we had to do
I thought that the hardest part to grasp was when we went over the "corporations are not people."
The aspects of the course I like the least is the participation of class discussion.
the large amounts of reading for the last book
Omnivore's dilemma was the least interesting of the readings we had to read, the author's points were understandable but they seemed to carry more ideological weight than constructive evidence.
I liked pretty much everything about this class.
so much writing and reading! (although it was expected but least favorite part)
Oddly, I disliked the blog posts. Not because they weren't fun or easy, but because of the deadlines. I know why deadlines are in place, but sometimes it is hard for me to keep up.
n/a
I didn't really enjoy the papers that needed to be written, but i suppose it's more of a personal preference against academic writing than a problem with the course.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Excellent course to take I enjoyed writing and learning about the way America runs. Since taking this course I now grow my own food, shop locally, and research more of where my products come from.
I highly recommend it
This course was definitely worth taking because it opened my eyes to domestic issues within the nation as well as the household.
that it helps me think about Domestic issues in daily life and how people cope with it.
enjoyable course
This is the class that I learned the most from this semester. I really liked the material covered and how it was structured. The issues we covered were applicable to our everyday lives so they were easier to cover, and they were issues that we could easily take action on (it's easier to choose what to eat than to become a gun control activist)
let's just say I would recommend this class to a friend.
I would recommend it, very informative and I learned so much more than any other AMST class!
Enjoyable and very informative! Just about anyone should take this class.
It was a great course to take.
A fun and exciting way to learn about the society we live in and many of its problems. Excellent writing intensive without being too strenuous on the brain, and full of great content.
18. Other comments:
I recommend this course to everyone!
I think that Yuka is very patient with students and is very knowledgable about the material.
I encourage other students to take this course, although, it does fulfill a general education requirement for writing intensive. The course and the educator that is teaching this course is overall genuine. The course helps with issues in America and Yuka encourages her students to take a stand in Domestic issues and learn from the course too. She makes the classroom a great learning environment.
Yuka, if you are reading this thank you for being such an awesome teacher! The readings, internet sources and class layout was all great, my only complaint would be Omnivore's Dilemma but I would not mind reading it if I had to. Keep up the good work!

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
AMAZING teacher. Absolutely loved this class and took so much from it.
Yuka is awesome, she really made me think about all of the issues and kept me engaged throughout the whole class.
She is a good instructor that knows how to encourage discussion and is flexible with her teaching. She is flexible and more than willing to make changes depending on how the class responds to the content, yet she still tries to incorporate the main units of the class into the modified content.
She is an amazing and caring teacher!
a great teacher, and should definitely become a professor at UHM.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I loved the blog posts.
In class book discussion
I liked the in class discussions the best, as well as the blogging aspect of the class. They were definitely more informal, but because of that it was more engaging and interesting.
Class discussions, blogging
I liked how personal the class was. The size was great, this left more time for in depth discussion.
The debate was very interacting and fun.
Units 2 and 3
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The papers but it's only because I had to work extremely hard and apply myself (which Yuka pushed me to do). It was overall a good thing but the papers were really hard
debates
I sometimes had a hard time grasping the concepts behind consumerism and big business because it was something I just had not learned about and did not really hear too much about.
Writing analytical papers
I didn't enjoy one of the three books we read.
Weekly blogging
Small class size and attendance
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
EXCELLENT and highly recommended even if you are not an american studies major
Awesome
This course is a fun and engaging course, it gives you a lot to think about. Some issues that we know we have in America are explored in-depth and it reveals a lot of truths that many people do not know about.
It was challenging, but very beneficial and interesting.
I absolutely loved this course. I wish I were able to take it again.
Good course, needs some improvement like more fun and interesting topics. Time is a problem but planning ahead with fun activities are best.
this was a very interesting course that expanded my thinking

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher. The discussions in class are always good.
Yuka consistently demonstrated a high level of knowledge, understanding, and enthusiasm of both the course material and the class in general. She effectively guided class discussions and facilitated a learning environment conducive to the course objectives. Hands down, Yuka is one of the top three instructors I've had during my experience at UH-Manoa. Without hesitation, I would enroll in another class with her as instructor and recommend her to anyone interested in taking an AMST class.
One of the best teachers I've had in college. My writing improved so much in this class.
Yuka is an outstanding teacher. She is very enthusiastic and passionate about her job. Her group discussions are relaxed yet professional. I would strongly consider taking another class that she teaches.
Great professor, really enjoyed this class!
Excellent teacher, easy to reach, enthusiastic about course material.
She is a very good teacher who sets interesting topics and knows the course well. She sets up a good level of debate within the course and it was very enjoyable
Yuka is an great professor. She encourages us to think creatively and critically. She sometimes could be a little bit of a difficult grader, but it was because she wants to encourage us to do our best.
In my opinion, she's a cool teacher. She was fair with grading and was able to adjust to any problems that the class had, even asking for evaluations and areas for improvement during the course of the semester. She clearly shows that she's a teacher that puts in her best effort to teach the course material in the most effective way possible.
Yuka expects everyone to submit their best work and is always willing to help us achieve our best.
Yuka is a great teacher. She had a great understanding of the content and taught it effectively. She is easy to communicate with and encourages class discussion. Great teacher, great class.
very good instructor. She is passionate about the subject.
Yuka is a great professor. She is kind and patient and really helps to get the class involved. She understands the life of a college student so she doesn't assign a lot of homework besides daily reading, weekly blog posts, and occasional essays.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I like the blog posts and the class discussions.
The classroom discussion was one aspect of the course that I liked the best. It allowed students to hear multiple perspectives of how their peers interpreted the course material.
I enjoyed the class discussions because it helped me understand the material a lot more.
The relaxed discussion environment created by Yuka made it easy to express opinions and thoughts without feeling judged.
I really liked Yuka's style of teaching, and her discussions that she led
Blogging was fun.
The blogging and debates we had in class
I liked all of the controversial topics. We got to look at many pros and cons of different situations, and also learned to be more aware of media and surrounding images.
The class discussions was always a very fun activity in class. Most students weren't afraid to state their opinions on the course material and it was always interesting to listen to other points of view that I might've never thought about myself.
I like that we got to have group discussion almost every class. It's helpful to hear what everyone else thinks about the readings.
I liked the blogging and the class discussion.
blogging
I really enjoyed the blog posts. There wasn't a lot of pressure on getting the answer correct or not. It was mainly about your personal opinion and we could write about whatever we wanted to. Sometimes it was hard to get enough content into the blog, but overall it was something that was fun and different.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I didn't really like the in-class assignments; to me they just take up valuable discussion time.
I think the final fictional reading should have been supplemented with non-fiction readings or articles in order to reinforce the primary topics of discussion for the section.
I didn't enjoy the group debate
None
n/a
Reading Non-fiction is kind of hard to get into if I'm not fascinated by the topic.
The lack of time when we got a decent debate or conversation going, we could not truly expand on the points.
I wish we had a little bit more visual aide to help guide the class discussion for the day. But overall, I think all the classes were pretty successful in getting students to be engaged and expand on relevant topics.
Nothing other than writing essays, which is a given.
The debate ended up going better than I thought it would but it was my least favorite assignment.
I did not like using literary analysis.
none
I wasn't a huge fan of the daily discussions. I'm not really shy but I tended to keep my thoughts to myself because I felt as though I was being judged by everyone in the class. It was more of a personal reason for like that part the least. I feel as though the discussions are good and informative and I liked to listen to others' insight and opinions but I didn't like to share my own.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This course is fun, good, and thought provoking.
Overall, this course has been exceptional. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I learned a lot about domestic issues.
Really great course, I learned a lot and gained a new perspective about things.
Outstanding.
Great course!
Overall excellent course. Would take again
It is a very interesting course that has a lot of diversity so you learn a lot about the people around you. However some of the topics are not knew to me so i did not expand my knowledge.
This course is a great one to take if students want to learn more about media and culture in the US and about ways we can change negative aspects of our culture. It also teaches students awareness.
Excellent in proficiency. It was a course that left me significantly more informed and open to ideas.
I enjoyed this course much more than I thought I would. I feel like I got a lot out of it and the way the writing assignments are spread out make it seem like it's not a writing intensive course.
Great course. It needs no major changes.
very good, organized, and worth taking.
I thought that this was an excellent class taught by and excellent professor. I went into it think about getting rid of one of my writing intensives but I learned a whole lot more. The topics are very interesting and important for people to learn about. It's not a lot of work to handle so it can fit into any type of schedule and it's very informative about issues in America.
18. Other comments:
I would recommend this class taught by Yuka to others.
Yuka is very sweet, and extremely thorough. It is clear that she has a true dedication and passion for her subject.
keep up the good work

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
You're like a really awesome teacher. You're really easy to talk to & very flexible. You're also like one of the very very very few of the professors that actually care about the students grades.
Excellent class and teacher. Highly recommend others take this class with her
Yuka is a caring teacher and is always looking to give you the benefit of the doubt. She makes class exciting and does care about us to learn as much as we can as undergraduate students
A great teacher, she really made discussion easy in class and kept the conversation about the material.
Yuka is a good professor who was able to achieve everything that she set out to do in the course. There are no real negatives that I can think of.
My overall evaluation of Yuka Polovina is that she was very well educated on her class topics, came to class prepared, and engaged great discussions among her students.
She's one of the nicest and most interactive teachers I've come across. She genuinely wants everyone to do well and goes out of her way to try to help out if a student isn't where they should be.
She is one of my most favorite teacher, she is very open to student discussion. Her ability to get students to participate in discussions was remarkable and professional at all times
Presented well of the class, very knowledgeable of what she is teaching.
She is an overall well prepared professor. She was enthusiastic and wanted the class to receive as much as possible from the class.
Its her first time teaching this course and shes still a grad student- I think she is doing a fantastic job of teaching. Usually grad student teachers don't care/ don't know how to speak/ don't know how to conduct a class. She really knows what she is doing. She has good foresight on what obstacles or problems the students may encounter in an assigned assignment or reading. She is very enthusiastic on presenting whatever lesson she is presenting; not to mention that she is also very knowledgeable. She is the best grad student teacher I have encountered yet, seriously.
Professor Yuka Polovina is an excellent instructor. I learned a lot this semester. She is very involved in the students' learning and she is always available to contact when I have questions about certain assignments. Her assignments and course materials are very interesting. She is willing to listen to students' concern and make improvement right away. I would definitely recommend this instructor to any students who want to take an American Studies class.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked reading the novels that I could actually keep up with.
The different sources that she had us look at in the class, not from a textbook but from books, videos, articles, etc.
I liked blogging every week because it gave me a chance to say what I wanted to say that I wasn't able to during class. Also I got to see where other peers were coming from on the readings or topics.
I liked the short papers in the third unit. They were easy to convey my thoughts and having questions to answer made it helpful what to look for and think about.
The thing that I like about the course were the very interesting writing assignments.
Splitting up in groups really helped me engage in discussion and made me feel a lot more comfortable.
Class discussion I was able to express my ideas and concerns on the reading
Very interactive with group discussions
I enjoyed the class discussion aspect of the course. It was engaging and made the class seem less daunting.
Advertising
I like this course, because this is a discussion base course. We have discussions about the course materials almost every class. Which gave me the chance to not only learn from the book, but also to learn from other fellow classmates. The writing assignments was very clear and easy to do.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Mainly the essays just because I'm not good at it.
Sometimes others didn't participate as much as I would have liked.
The worst part was having to read every day because it was difficult to manage with all of my other subjects.
The green illusions book was hard to read and overwhelming at times.
I didn't care for the blogging. I would have preferred doing something else.
The amount of reading was heavy.
The weekly blog posts were a bit difficult for me to keep up with. It's not a very hard assignment but I tend to forget to do a lot of website related activities because I'm not home very often with work and school.
Writing workshops seem short
I did not enjoy the weekly blog posts because the seemed like extra, unnecessary work.
Energy and Consumption
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It was very informative and fun :)
I'd take it again.
This course was an excellent course for a writing intensive course. Yuka gave us different ways to write critically and was never a bore.
I really liked it and made me question if I would like to minor in American studies
Good course. I learned a lot.
This course was interesting and it was made up of knowledgable material.
I really liked the class, it was interesting and brought to light several things I hadn't really thought about.
Great course to understand why we do what we do and why?
I highly recommend her to other students she does make topic discussion of issues fun.
The course was well put together and was informative.
I was using this class as filler- what a mistake. So much work for a class that I was expecting to cruise in, but no regrets. I learned a lot in this class.
My overall evaluation of this course is that this is an beneficial course to take, because it helps us in learning about current issues and be able to critically think about these issues.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Very engaging and reaches out to every student.
Yuka is a really good teacher. She has the ability to make the material understandable for everyone in the class even though they may be on different levels. She is also very good and bringing some of the more quiet people into a discussion, I think it's because she's kind of quiet her self. But she's very helpful, I enjoyed having her as my TA.
Very helpful
Very helpful and approachable. Always willing to answer questions and help revise papers and assignments ahead of time.
Overall Yuka is a great Teacher's Assistant and prepares her students to think critically during the discussion class. She also helps me organize my ideas for the writing prompt and also encourages her students to go to her office hourse if one needs help with a writing prompt or need help with the reading for the week. I also learned alot from this class.
She was very friendly and approachable! I felt like she was one of us in the classroom, but the only difference was that she was our instructor and a far more smarter. She encouraged us to participate, since wanted us to get good grades in participation.
She is a great discussion leader
Yuka is awesome! I love her so much! She was fair and very helpful and just a really great person and teacher.
She was a great T.A, Mrs. Gonazalez had a lot of very confusing prompts, but Yuka did her best to help the students in lab understand what was going on, which I appreciated. She also helped me edit my papers before they were due which was very helpful.
A-
She was a great TA and the discussions were very fun and I learned a lot
The ideal TA, she was very fair with each student and had a great understanding of the material.
She's good at what she is doing.
Great
A very good TA very helpful and easy to talk too she cares a lot about her students success and does whatever she can to help those who need it
Excellent T.A.. Is always available and quick to respond to concerns and is always professional and prepared
she was a good TA. her feedback on my papers helped me write better and better each time.
She is a good teacher and I would recommended anyone to take her for a course about American Studies.
A great organized teacher that knows each material so when the discussions are happening she is able to make sure the discussions are about the right things. She is very easy to talk to and encourages to meet with her on anything.
Good TA, showed good knowledge of the subject
Good job handling the class and material. It always felt very comfortable to speak out in class and in discussion. She worked very hard to make sure you were as successful as you could be in the class. (EX. would help with papers before they were due, made sure we could make something up if we missed, etc.) Pretty hard grader on essays however.
that she was very helpful when it came to the group lead discussion and she tried her best to get everyone in class to discuss about the readings.
Knows the course material very well and is very encouraging when it comes to class discussion. She actually helped make this course very interesting for me.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Friday sections were the most fun for me because I got to bring up all the thoughts and ideas that came to me while I was reading. I found myself annotating the books and other materials so that I could remember things that I wanted to tell my section on fridays.
The t.a
The aspects of the course I liked the best was the reading, sometimes the discussion helps, it helps me develop my critical thinking skills. The discussion help sometimes help me not to be afraid to speak.
Small classroom environments, and that we didn't have any final exams or multiple choice exams.
The discussions.
I liked discussion because it was interesting to see everybody's personal viewpoints and Yuka lead discussions really well.
The class led discussions
I liked the group discussion
The presentations were interactive!
Hearing what students talk about during discussion.
Group discussion
I liked the discussions i thought they were very fun
Discussion
reading a comic book was fun also not having a final for the class
I got to learn about the other point of view in the American history.
I liked that there was no final exam.
Discussions were interesting and really helpful in understanding the subjects
Class discussion group presentations creative assignments
I liked the group lead discussion because it let me be creative.
It was interesting to have a professor encourage critical thinking.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The lectures weren't as fun for me because I don't really like sitting and being talked at, but Prof. Gonzalez is pretty good at keeping them interesting enough so that the class didn't completely check out.
Nothing
The aspect that I liked the least was the discussion. I sometimes don't like to talk during the discussions, I am shy when speaking in front of people.
Sometimes in these small discussions, being forced to talk was very nerve-wreking. I like it better if I were to able to speak something when I had an ideal naturally come to me. Some classmates would talk too much and therefore some of the things I wanted to say were said already. Maybe we can have small group discussions and then have a class presentations ?
Writing the papers
The readings. There was just too much.
The amount of reading was very difficult to complete.
lectures because it was hard to follow the slides
Attendance policy
Actually taking part of the discussion.
None
Not much i didn't like everything was good
Essay tests simply due to the time constraints
having to participate all the time in class
The course was too negative and promoting anti-American ideas.
what i liked the least was having to talk a lot in class in order to get most of the participation points. I am not very vocal when it comes to class discussions.
Grading was a little tough haha
the grading scale of the writing assigments
There were no aspects of the course I didn't like.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I really liked this course. It actually has me considering a major in American Studies
Good
This course was one of the classes that helped and encouraged me to think critically.
I learned a lot from this course and made a lot of new friends!
It was good and intelligent.
Very informative. Also a little provocative
Good course for non majors.
I enjoyed the class discussions but I didn't like the guest lectures
A+
It's good if you like to be part of class discussion.
Terrific
Very fun class i would love to have yuka as a TA or professor again
An interesting course with interesting topics and I enjoyed the discussion sections. The short writings assignment prompts were vague and difficult at times and I feel the essay tests were somewhat inadequate in testing knowledge of the subject. There was often only time to briefly and often shallowly discuss a few of the themes presented.
This course is alright and help you open your eyes in the past.
I enjoyed learning about the American aspects and learned things that I thought I knew but from different perspectives.
Interesting, engaging, and fun
fun class would recommend the class to others.
that it was the most fun I had with American Studies and the most information learned.
Interesting course. The professor and TA contributed greatly to this.
