13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
excellent, i felt motivated to attend class because the discussions were very passionate and enlightening. i also felt that the instructor had a deep knowledge of the material being discussed and i felt confidence in the material
Encourages students to read and analyze class readings. Allows students to develop their own thoughts/hypotheses on ideas discussed in class and encourages class discussion regardless on accuracy of answers. Encouraged development for critical thinking on sensitive subject matter.
Excellent teacher, very intelligent and knows her material extremely well. Is an excellent discussion facilitator and a great speaker. Was happy to adjust to the rest of the class and was always willing to backtrack and explain bits of history to those of us who are not history majors. Thank you for making the material a little less intimidating!
She is an extremely intelligent woman who critically analyzes subject material and responds to discussion openly and effectively and does not shut down other opinions.
a great asset to the University
Awesome teacher! Knows her stuff! Communicates well with others and is very caring for her students. Something that many teachers aren't. So much kudos to her!

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
while some readings were shallow and boring. especially apple williams, other books were very interesting and exciting. satchmo, and colonial present were my favorite. i also like the various articles that were offered for reading material. my favorite was by haunani kay-trask and i actually shared it with a friend who almost came to tears. then i brainwashed her about some of the course material we were covering. i honestly should have charged her for my insight.
I liked the videos and the video clips presented in class.
readings
I enjoyed the books and class discussions. Although I didn't talk/participate much, I learned much from Professor and other students.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
apple williams williams. while i felt that the book was helpful, i didn't feel it was so helpful to have required the book for the course. perhaps some selections of the book for future courses would be more applicable. i just felt that there are other books that deserve title of "REQUIRED" book for course
I almost feel like this particular course should have been longer. It seemed like the class would start to get into some interesting discussions, but then class would end before we could really explore some of those ideas. It just seems like it needed more time to really warm up to some topics.
The reading selections were often heady and difficult for me to understand.
writings
Some readings were pretty heavy and wordy. But, it was needed I suppose.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
excellent, and i would recommend this course for anyone interested in labor relations or indigenous rights. i am a POLS major and i took this class because it was a 2 in 1 but i came out wishing this was required course for all pre-law students. very inspiring.
It is a reading and writing intensive class and would best be taken in congruence with easier, less labor-intensive courses.
great course for the sheep to attend...
I would recommend it to other students, especially those interested in politics, US, and globilization.
18. Other comments:
excellent. while i may not be the most talkative one in the class, by any degree, i learned a lot from this course, and i feel that this course has changed the way i look at life in every aspect. in addition, this has only moved me closer toward my passion of indigenous rights and labor relation in the u.s. i took a american labor history course before and this course was, oddly, very relevant to what i learned there. i was very excited to come to class, even though there were some suspicionable characters in class but the discussions were very interesting and heartful. i would definitely recommend this course AND this instructor specifically to my friends. only thing i would recommend is for people who are not so outspoken as others maybe we can go around the table and discuss things so that not only 3 people are dominating the discussion in class?? k thanks

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
she is very knowledgeable of the course materials and curriculum. She is also very approachable and easy to ask questions of. She becomes more of a mentor and helper in understanding and getting through the class rather than just an instructor. She presented class material that was controversial in a very open and relaxed environment that allowed us to all equally discuss the issues. Her design of the curriculum gave the class ample time to discuss materials and cover all areas of the outlined syllabus.
Karyn Wells is a highly effective speaker who constantly encourages and engages her students to broaden their perspective and overall knowledge of not only the course content but as critical thinkers in general. She evokes critical discussion from her students and her style of teaching produces a class environment that allows for her students to relate to the topics. I would definitely recommend her as an instructor.
I appreciate the level of knowledge this instructor has on the topics of the course and how she was able to help each student further understand the concepts, history, and field better. The text selection was excellent and I enjoyed the multiple types of learning through readings, film, presentations, and class discussions. In addition, I appreciate how the instructor enabled students to excel in academic writing. Overall, this instructor was passionate about her students, the content of the course, and made my education at UH meaningful. Thank you.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really enjoyed being exposed to various works on the subject by very different authors from various different educational backgrounds and cultural backgrounds. I think the variety of materials used enabled the class to get a whole view of the subjects from different schools of thought and kept us engaged. I also enjoyed the projects that involved building our own lesson plans and discussions. It allowed each member of the class to be able to share their own ideas of the material.
I enjoyed the student presentations on each of the readings. The presentations allowed for everyone in the class to have a voice and also, for everyone to understand the content of the text better. Through student presentations, students are able to learn from one another and absorb knowledge in a relevant way. I especially liked that the presentations on the readings were free to interpretation, allowing students to present with activities, visual aids, and through other creative forms.
I particularly enjoyed the readings and presentations. Also class discussions were interesting, especially ones that challenged our thoughts.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
50 minute classes did not allow enough time to truly start discussing the materials. Because there was so much material to cover, we did not always get to wrap up the discussion or go back and finish discussions in the next class period.
I think the length requirement for the midterm and final papers could be shortened from 8-10 pages to 6-8 pages. Other than that, I did not dislike much of anything about the course.
It was difficult when students did not meet expectations.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
it is a very beneficial course, besides the W and O focuses. It allowed the class to gain a perspective not usually shared within academia and yet is not outside the bounds of academia. I would like to have more classes like this one.
I would definitely recommend this course to any student regardless of their major because this course has been useful in aiding my overall knowledge in various different ways.
I was happy to take this course since it allowed me to enhance my understandings of Indigenous perspectives and ideologies.

Writing papers :)
Although it was a writing intensive course, I wish that the essays were not as large. I would rather have had the workload spread out throughout the entire course of the semester. Also, there is a lot of texts! I don't have the money to afford all of the books for this course so I have had to buy the books periodically and when I had the money.

She has a passionate concern for and adequate knowledge of American Indians issues. That makes students want to study harder, I think.
i thought she was good
Brains and Beauty! 10/10!
She was a great and effective instructor; she got me passionate about the subject material and because she herself is a Native American, I felt personally moved by her testimony or her reciting of the facts about her people. I felt she handled the class very professionally on a day-to-day basis; she was fair and understanding yet did not let us slack.
She is an awesome teacher and really understands the topics we discuss in class. She is always open to others opinions but makes it clear that we should take the time to really learn and understand things from the Native perspective.
Very knowledgeable, provided personal depth to the subject also helped with the writing process. Enthusiastic and capable of facilitating critical discussions.
She was a great instructor that knew the material very well.
A very intelligent Professor. She's very passionate about what she teaches, because it shows. She makes the class extremely challenging which is great because it preps students for upper division courses. She cares about her students because she's always there to help. Overall, she's a great teacher
She's great. I learned a lot and she opened up a new view on the issues discussed in class.
The material that we covered in class was very interesting. I like the discussions in class about the discoveries of the continents around the world to learning about the Native American People writing about there life experiences to Treaties and trust doctrine and finally about the Sacred sites the we humans take for granted in this world.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The videos and readings were truly eye opening to the mistreatment of Native Americans in the US.
I liked the way she corrected my papers. She gave me a lot of feedback. It made me revise the papers easier and think over about the topics more deeply.
we talked about a lot of interesting things
I liked the interactive nature of the class, and the ability to ask critical questions. I also liked the fact the material was being presented by Karyn, who takes a friendly approach towards students, while she has specific goals to convey to her students. The material is her personal endeavor, and as a Native American herself, it is apparent that she cares deeply about the subject matter and in educating her students to think in new ways.
I liked the entire syllabus and the organization of the class. It was well thought out and flowed smoothly between sections; it was easy for me to follow along even if I didn't have a feel for what was going on. The readings were engaging and I found myself reading them weeks in advance.
I loved the readings!! All of them, except for the legal part, were very intersting. The readings opened my eyes to a lot of diffrent problems and struggles that Native Americans deal with on a day to day basis that I wouldn't have known before taking this course.
The section on Native American law.
The readings were very interesting.
Towards the ending of the semester I realized that I was going to miss class. I really enjoyed some of the topics that were discussed in class and the people (which was the whole class) that were involved in the discussion.

15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I did not enjoy this course.
It was a good opportunity for me to think about American Indians issues. Apparently, I had little background knowledge about American society and American Indians, but I still enjoyed thinking about the topics.
it was fine
Overall this course was excellent! Aside from minor grievances, Karyn is a master at making students think in new perspectives and becoming emotionally attached to the educational process, in particular with native issues. Education is about opening new horizons, and she accomplishes this handily with her students. I feel like this course would be less substantial if she were not teaching it, and she is a valuable asset to the university.
It was great learning from Mo this semester. This class inspired me to pursue a future in civil rights law and further my major studies in Ethnic Studies. I feel a greater awareness of the world around me that I live in; not hatred, yet an unexplainable apprehension and fear of what is around me. But this is good, because I'd rather know what is truth rather than fiction. Anyway, it was a great course. I would recommend it (and already have) to my friends or people looking for a WI credit class that can change their views of the world and our country and the very past we've learned about from the age of five.
Great course... I'd recommend it to anyone.
Enjoyed it, Instructor Wells is on point.
This course was well worth taking and would recommend it to anyone.
Most topics are interesting. The course has helped me realize some of my weaknesses and strengths and what I need to do to improve them.
Tough but needed
I would recommend this class to anyone who is interested in American Studies.

Thank you very much for teaching us! (I am pretty sure you can tell who I am if I say this, but) I have made up my mind to write my graduation thesis about American Indian issues after going back to Japan. I have to write at least 20 pages, but it will not be that hard, because I have already read some books and articles and have wrote 4 papers!

12. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She was passionate about her teaching and it was clear that the subject was near and dear to her on both an academic and personal level. This amount of passion can be detrimental to a course, however, the instructor maintained a professional stance of objectivity that made her successful.
she was a good teacher, really opened my eyes to a lot of the current, as well as past, problems that many Native Americans have to face. She taught exactly what the class was supposed to be about and she did it very critically.
Did very well. Was very good at getting the class to think in a way that they might not have before, and got class to think critically. I learned a lot about the issues that are surrounding the Native Americans, and i really like the class
GREAT! She is very enthusiastic about class discussions.
Excellent class. Would not hesitate to take another class with Mo.

She knows what she is talking abouteven though she sometimes only presents one viewpoint it is a strong one and it is the viewpoint that is not usually recognized.
an exacelent teacher

She is a very knowledgable on the material presented in class and she is very passionate about the subject she teaches in class. She makes you think critically about the text and the issues of Native Americans. The materials is class is very hard to understand because it was all new to me but the instructor does a good job or explaining the text in class discussions.
I enjoyed professor Wells very much. She hand and enormous amount of knowledge and passion for all of the course content. I definitely learned a lot and the class will help me to be a much more critical thinker.
Good
very well organize and made sure we understand the history well
opened up new perspectives in America-Native relations

good somewhat seems like a one sided argument but she even agrees that it is true and thats the way she likes to present it i'm fine with it
Great class
she was perfect
She is VERY intelligent about American Indian issues. She is a little intimidating with her knowledge but if you ask questions she is more than willing to ask. Also, she is very nice and if you go in to her office hours, she is more than willing to help and works things out if necessary.
Karyn was one of my favorite teachers so far in my 4 years I've been attending UH Manoa. Not only the course content, but her passion and enthusiasm made me want to go to class, and participate. She was always well prepared, and gave us interesting course material. When I signed up for the class I thought we'd be learning about American History. To my surprise It was about the United States indigenous people. Events, tragedies, and Triumphs of Native Americans that I would otherwise have no knowledge of unless I took her course. I'm glad I did.

14. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked hearing what others had to say, but the majority of my learning and understanding of the material came from the lecturing of the instructor on what to take away from the material.
class discussions of our course materials that also relate to the world today.
The different perspectives she gave us, from the books and readings, she gave us to look at.
Watching movies and youtube videos that relate to our topic of discussion.
The lack of student response in class.
The book LAKOTA WOMAN because it was not a bunch of reading about statistics and laws. It was a story that helped you relate to all the statistics and laws we learned about.
Learning about the Native Americans and comparing them to the Native Hawaiians. Seeing how similar their relations are to each other.
doing re-writes for better grades and extra credit
I like reading the non-academic books because it was easier to follow what the author was saying instead of having to re-read paragraphs over and over again to figure out the meaning. I also enjoyed watching movies in class and our class discussion because it cleared up a lot of the things from the text I didn't understand.
Class discussions. I enjoyed hearing all the information professor Wells had to share.
Learning other perspectives of something that is publicized only one way.
class discussions and readings
groupd talks getting to hear opinions though no one was too strong to encourage the way american government ran things because it was demonized from the very beginning and it may be true but american history is more complicated than what we get from this one class
the discussions about the readings
The class discussions.
debates
All of the readings and movies were very interesting. I think it opened up a new perspective and our instructor really led the discussions to help us understand and analyze the texts and movies.
The readings. They were extremely interesting, and eye-opening.
15. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Unfortunately, with a full course load of 17 credits, the amount of reading can get unwieldy.
N/A
I didnt like the quizs, i thought that they got a little more specific about the readins then they needed to. I think that she could have just as easily found out that we read by having easier quizes
-- snipped --
I understand the need for reading (so that we understand the issues and can critically talk about them) but mabye a lecture would have been more engaging because sometimes I did not have the time to do all the reading and could not catch up because more kept being assigned and this made me not able to participate in class because I was behind.
NA
quizzes! let them be open notes at least!
I didn't like not getting that much time to write the papers.
Room got really cold.
The essays required a lot of thinking but less than a week were given to write them out. I don't think it matters that it is only a 5 page essay, if you want quality, a lot of time should be given.
reading material
-- snipped --
its all gravy
the heavy reading
I actually didn't like how we got the papers just one week before the due date. I think maybe a week and a half would be great because these papers make you think and a little more time would have helped.
Class discussion, I felt that at times I was the only student who had anything to contribute. Not a fault on our instructor, but my classmates who didn't read the course material for that class.

16. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I think the course is a very necessary first step for anyone seeking to claim they are studying America. It is a crucial foundation for getting a perspective on America that is little known and highly masked by our current society. I felt that I probably learned more from this course than any other course this semester, even though I will most likely not be pursuing the field any further than this.
great. it was interesting and fun at times. tedious in work, but what class isn't? :)
Awesome
an 8! I just wished we could have split the class into smaller groups for discussion because many were not able to speak up in class.

I learned a lot in this class and the teacher was very passionate and informative. I did however find myself skimming through the readings because there was so much and not having a full understanding of the material. I learned the most when she talked to us about everything. I am glad I took this class but probably wouldn't take it again due to how much time I had to dedicate to it.
It is a very good and interesting class.

This course was one of my favorite this semester because I learned a lot about Native Americans and it opened my eyes to think critically about literature, film, and pictures. I learned you can't always accept everything as the truth and you have to decide which ones your going to accept as your own truths. This class has also made me realize that if I know something is not right I'm going to stand up and say something about it instead of letting it go. After this class I'm more aware of the issues Native Americans are facing still until today and now I can't say after taking this class that I've haven't heard it.
Very informative. Very worth it, if you care to hear the truth.
Good.
good class to take if at all interested in American history
-- snipped --
good no complaints all went well
i would recommend this for anyone who is a american studies major or sociologist that is interested in these kind of events
I learned SO MUCH from this course. Even though the readings were hard at times and the papers were very challenging to write, I think it was all worth it because I believe that all of the information that I learned from Mo will stay with me forever. My perceptions of Indians and what they are going through and what they went through have most definitely changed. From this class, I hope to share what I learned with everyone I know because this information is so important to know. I recommend everyone to take this class.
Thumbs Up!
