13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Knows subject well and knows how to explain things so the students understand and learn what he is trying to teach.
He is able to explain concepts very clearly.
He has a website that has the entire course laid out for the students to follow and stay on track.... even get ahead of the schedule as all the material for the course is present on the course website. he has videos and suggested work problems for students to practice repeatedly 24/7. this leaves no excuses to fail this course from my point of view. He is able to break-down the complicated structure of Physics problems into simple components for easy digestion and understanding. He is able to key in on trouble areas and solve the problem students have when solving complicated Physics propblems.
he is a well rounded teacher.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
Having an in-class lecture.
I would like Herve Collins to be paid handsomely for his hard-work for all the students he encounters.
nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He made sure that everyone understood and answered all questions before moving on to the next section.
He made himself very available if we had any questions and was prompt in e-mail responses.
He seems to be the only professor that understands students have a life and other classes besides the Professors course. He is flexible on exam dates and homework assignments. He simply request an email correspondance to discuss the situation and make proper adjustments to complete the course requirements in a timely manner.
he would ask his students how they are doing and if they needed any help understanding anything.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, Great teacher.
Yes, his class will make other physics classes and upper engineering courses not as difficult.
Absolutely, I have recommmended other students to his course already. I even recommend any Physics student to access and utilize Herve Colins course website for student success in the Physics 170 course.. regardless of instructor. Herve has designed the course to be palatable for students experiencing the material for the first time.
yes i would. He is an awesome teacher. As long as you put the time into learning, you will pass his class.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Nothing.
He is a great instructor and needs to teach other courses too.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows the subject very well, understanding, always there when you need outside of class help.
shows concern for students
Knows and explains the material well.
Presents difficult material very clearly. Knows where students commonly make mistakes and emphasizes those areas while he teaches. (all the best instructors I have had did this)
Knowledge and availability
Herve is very passionate about Physics, and is a great lecturer. He makes his lectures very interesting.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
Sometimes less is more when it comes to videos, there is so many videos, its difficult to watch them all
encourage more participation in class by breaking down the questions into chunks with varying degrees of difficultly, which makes some room for those that are struggling. Don't waste time telling people they have to be faster so often (which is discouraging) or being disappointed that some people aren't doing the homework, just move on with the lesson.
It might make it a little easier to follow if chapters from the book are recommended and announced during the Collaborate online session (or at least in the beginning), for changes in topic.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He made sure you're doing well and if you're not he'll let you know.
Offered help outside of normal class hours, offered retake on exams
Answered questions promptly and is always available even outside of office hours.
He was available whenever students needed his help, graded exams quicker than any instructor I have ever had. Always responded to emails quickly, was willing to help in classes he didn't even teach if my professor was not available.
office hours and tutoring sessions
He was very flexible with scheduling the exams, since many of us have very different and busy schedules.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend Herve to other students even though he's an online teacher because his overall class is pretty good.
yes
I would recommend Professor Collin to anyone who wants to learn physics. His course is extremely well organized, a student would be hard pressed to find another teacher who offered as many tools for success in a course as professor Collin does.
yes
Yes! He teaches the subject really well and is very nice. Lectures are always interesting.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

super genius, but very humble
I wish he were teaching the next semester of Phys 272.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Great at explaining the materials so we understand. Gets students involved in the course so we all could understand
He is very friendly and easy to approach to ask questions. He knows physics very well. He is great to go over problems and ask questions. He has great concern for students and and sees that they do their best. He is a great teacher!!
he has a strong sense of responsibility helpful knowledgeable
His greatest merit as a teacher is his consideration to his students. He really cares his students.
Herve is very personable. He's a clearly a master of the content he teaches and assists his students to break down the complex into pieces of information that we are able to understand.
super fun and very smart! made coming to class fun!
Smart, easy going, very willing to help, very encouraging
He is able to step down as a professor to a students level to help explain the material that he goes over in class which is really helpful.
He knows physics and teaches it well. Very friendly and shows concern for his students. If he doesn't know something he finds out and is always encourages his students.
Kapiolani CC should be very happy to have him as a faculty member. He is brilliant, thoughtful, and responsible. He always concerns and shows his care to students. His lecture is fantastic, he teaches hard stuff in depth, but he makes it look manageable. He has everything that the professor needs to have. He is beyond that.
He is extremely patient and is always open to helping students. Normally for a teacher who is willing to help they aren't as enthusiastic as Herve is. Herve is extremely good at explaining information, with not only this teaching style, but is also a good teacher through his sound effects while teaching which make learning enjoyable and never boring.
He is very friendly and is always willing to help.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Slow down a bit on sections
I don't think they're anything bad about his teaching, but I didn't want to do another project.
None.
teach more classes please!
It's hard with him going on so many trips and missing many classes.
None. He is good as it is!
None at all.
I wanted to take his class more in higher physics. And maybe, some mistakes in the online solution or lecture. It's not big deal though.
NONE!
None
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Helped us understand the material more clearly on his free time
You can talk to him what you are going through, whether it's personal or school related. He understands and works with what you are going through.
yes, he is a very good professor
Being available to students during office and non-office hours, providing opportunities to reinforce students learning through the utilization of the PLUS sessions and additional tutoring sessions that he's hosted. Professor Collin also forwarded news he receives through the university grapevine that students may find useful for the pursuit of their majors. Also, before the start of the class, prepared us by emailing his students about the effort that would be needed to successfully complete his class.
always willing to answer questions without making the students feel stupid or condemned. answered emails very quickly! always sent us emails he thought could benefit us! Was never too busy for his students and never acted like he was better than any of us.
From the start encouraging to keep up with the class and lecture.
He took time out of his own schedule to meet with the students and even made a personal plus session that he holds for students to come in and ask questions.
Always willing to talk one on one. Very good communication outside of class and will spend extra time with students to insure they understand the material.
Tries to involve all students in the class, tries to encourage students to participate. He always email us for anything whether which is related to the class or not, and he replies emails very quick. We can feel that he really cares and concerns students.
He would always say that anyone can walk into his office or feel free to email him whenever, because he replies quickly.
He always answered question and made sure we understood the material, which was difficult. He offered opportunities outside of the classroom related to the subject that would help us better understand the different applications of physics (i.e. the Physics Olympics).
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes!!!!!! GREAT TEACHER!
YES!!!He is great!! It's a hard class because of the problems but he goes over it with the class.
Absolutely. See questions above.
definitely!!! the best physics professor ever! not just very knowledgeable in this area, but extremely kind and always in a good mood and smiling. One of the few professors I have ever had that seem to enjoy being at his job each day and actually caring for his students!
Yes absolutely, great teacher
Sure!! He is one of the best physics teachers I've had!!
YES of course! Great professor.. Easily one of the best. My favorite course this semester.
I have recommended to many of my friends. I believe people cannot get any better physics lecture in Hawaii. Also, I was recommended from my friend who is majoring physics before I decided to register his class.
OF COURSE! He's very thorough when teaching students and covers a variety of topics so that one may be prepared for any type of given physics situation.
Yes. He's very good at explaining things and he's funny.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Great at teaching and helps students strive for the best. Excellent and by far greatest teacher I ever had in college
YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
Excellent teacher that I'd highly recommend to other students interested in STEM studies.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
he knows the subject he's teaching
HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT!! Herve is so knowledgeable about his subject and relays the information so his students can understand. He taught the course in a way so that each portion of 'new material' was just compounding on the things we learned the week before so the class had a seamless flow to it.
Very knowledgeable professor. Very outgoing and approachable.
He knew the subject really well, and made Physics interesting and fun. He also prepares students well for future courses. He is creative in teaching and it works well.
very helpful, encouraging, accessible
- He is enthusiastic about teaching physics. - He is well prepared for lectures with numerous examples. - He encourages class participation and questions. - He is accessible for questions in and outside of the classroom on a regular basis. - He provides timely responses via e-mail.
Great professor. He shows an enthusiasm for the subject and for his students. I would highly recommend him to any student, and hope to take more courses from him in the future.
He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
He did a great job of progessing us from basic concepts to hard applications. I enjoyed how he focused on the fundamentals of vectors at the beginning of the course that allowed us to focus on the physics concepts later. Great to have the tools to use, and so we could focus on the concepts. Also, I loved all the on-line lectures and problem sovling. I was fantastic to have all those resources.
He wants student to learn and understand physics. He is a passionate teacher and enjoys teaching.
He was very knowledgeable in the subject matter. He also made our online classes as fun as possible. He did do a very good job of informing us of what exactly we needed to know for the exams and was also very helpful with our semester project if we got stuck.
More than just a teacher, Herve Collin is a friend!
Knowledge of material
he was really patient with his students and was always helpful whenever I had questions! He's also really funny!!
Knows physics.
provides online resources of past lectures that condense what you need to know for the class into 15 minute videos
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
more detail on the lectures online.
None at the moment. At first it was frustrating having everything online, but as the semester went on I understood his reasons and how imperative for the student that we master navigating the internet. Also, I hate to say anything bad but sometimes he works at such a rapid pace that his solutions are wrong and its very confusing for the student.
none
- To improve on penmanship (writing). It was very difficult to read the chalkboard and I sat in the front of the classroom. - To consider using a different textbook for physics 170. The textbook was very difficult to read and follow.
The material is presented in a lopsided fashion. I would recommend a little more balance. The first sections are covered intently for a long period, while the later subjects which are more difficult are covered for a lessor period.
Only thing I can think of is that, sometimes his hand writing is hard to decipher.
Less content in the exams. Maybe just 1 semester project? Would have rather focused more time on the next exam than another similar project.
none. He is a good teacher.
None this class was perfect just the way it is.
None
He goes too fast n he shud make his tests open book...
I thought that the work load was pretty tough! maybe only one semester project instead of two!
Your sloppy handwriting is a HUGE problem, especially for an online class. Find a new way to deliver the lectures, Blackboard Collaborate is not doing the trick. Perhaps get a sound booth and a nice microphone too, because it is hard to understand the words you're using over all that pen noise.
include more student participation in the online class
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
he asked whether we undestand the material or not
YES! He makes EVERYTHING available for his students to succeed, its just up to us to put the work in.
He's very encouraging and he makes good recommendations.
He offered a lot of his time to help students. Responded to emails fast, and always helped students when they need it.
Professor Collin was accessible for questions both during and after class on a regular basis. I also appreciated his quick responses via e-mail with any questions or feedback on homework problems. He also provides additional lectures online covering course material, so that students were able to listen to lecture topics again if they missed pertinent information. Professor Collin is also very encouraging to students and helps them to identify and work with their strengths and weaknesses in the course material.
He's always available.
His willingness to avail himself for the students is legendary.
Very prompt replies to e-mail at all times. Setting up the Stem tutoring was a great resource to have.
By being available at all times.
Yes, he was very helpful and tried to answer all our question when we got stuck.
You can come to his office at any time, and he can help you
Reminded us always about deadlines
He's awesome
Solicits questions often.
provided students with plenty of resources that provided guidelines for exams, projects and homework
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, he makes the class comfortable for students to learn
YES, most definitely. He preps his engineering students for their future careers.
Yes. Future students will learn a lot but they have to work hard.
Yes, best teacher i had so far in my opinion. He actually aims to not only teach physics and get students good at the subject, but get students ready for future classes. He also has very challenging tests, that really test you on how well you know the subject, and because of that, you learn a lot, and learn it well. He instills good habits in his students also.
yes. great teacher
Definitely YES. He's a tough teacher, but he prepares you well for the many courses to follow both in course material and learning.
Absolutely. There is no why not.
He is such a good teacher, his interest and concern for his students are clearly demonstrated throughout the semester.
Definately. He made it seem easy. I liked his constant positive attitude.
Yes, because he is a cool teacher who is very intelligent and wants his students to succeed.
Yes I would. I have learned a lot in this class because of the way the material was presented to me.
Yes, most helpful teacher I've seen.
Not really.... Hes a little too difficult to keep up with....
YES! He's tough but you really learn a lot and he makes physics more interesting!
No. His handwriting is atrocious and his accent is pretty thick as well. Low pen resolution and bad sound quality compound the problems. Often, a small variable would appear to be a blob, and whole words come out as hairballs. For a physics class, which is difficult enough already, these problems combined make the class nearly impossible... unless you're willing to teach yourself, in which case, why take this class?
yes he's an excellent teacher, presents material effectively and provides general examples or cases that can be referred to when going over homework and preparing for exams
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
funny
I personally view Professor Collin as the "tough" teacher you dislike at first, but are extremely grateful for as your journey as a student continues.
Nothing that I haven't already said.
He is one of the best instructor I've ever had.
Great teacher. Fun activities. Really liked the Semester project.
He is a very nice guy.
Good job! I really enjoy physics now. Thank you!
vous etes le meilleur !!!
Ok
nice accent!!!
Please find a way to convey the knowledge, both in writing and verbally, to students in a more clear manner.
plus sessions are awesome
18. Other comments:
PHYS-170 is a very tough subject.
AWESOME SEMESTER!
Is it possible for Professor Collin to teach Physics 272 also.
I highly recommend his classes. He is the ultimate instructor.
Thank you Herve. Course was great!
I found the homework problems online to be very helpful and a great resource to prepare for the exams. In fact I didn't open my textbook all semester.
Cheers!

Blackboard Collaborate is awful... just terrible. A real nightmare. But that isn't the only problem: your handwriting is very, very sloppy. Not sure if you're tired from lectures all day or what, but if I can't read it, how can I understand it? Also, a better microphone is a MUST, and the background noise (dogs, sawing, pen scratch scratch) makes learning from the live lectures a real chore.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Great knowledge
1. He is approachable. 2. He relate the material to real life and it motivates students a lot. 3. His material is hard, but he is easy-going, which also motivate to try harder in his class. Are you failing? Study harder. I will be there. It's his attitude. 4. He encourages to study and form a group to struggle together. 5. When you're struggling, he's there with you. 6. Even though the class is pretty hard, he makes our life easier to skip simple arithmetic and some procedures that aren't needed. 7. Besides the his ability as a professor, he's a kind of a person who you want to say hi first. 8. On top of it, even though he is easy going, he does care students' performance. He doesn't let us skip what we should be doing, and he is VERY clear to let us know what he wants to see in reports. 9. Students can always discuss with him whenever he's available, which is most of the time. Also, he is always the other side of the monitor too. He gives us instant feedback so if we talked enough with him, we end up getting A all the time. 10. That also encourage students to talk with him, which we get more than what we needed and we are even more motivated to do better. 11. So students can feel that he cares a lot of his students. 12. Overall, he's the MOST BESTEST professor I've known so far. I doubt there will be better instructor.
His knowledge & teaching skills are unmatched.
- Encouraging of student participation - Accessible for questions and concerns regarding course material - Worked with students having difficulty in the course to help steer them in the right direction
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
One resource for lab instead of writing guidelines and another lab outline.
Please smoke less. Students love him so much and he should spread his aloha and his knowledge.
More clarity in hand writing.
Keep up the good work. Can you teach physics 272 also.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Helped whenever he was asked. Flexible
In numerous ways. I don't want to write a bible. He DOES care his students.
Extra help.
He's very lenient. He would give short extensions in order to have a better report instead of a bad report turned in on time.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, absolutely. He allowed us the time to really present a piece of work we were proud of.
Yesyesyes. Absolutely yes. Why? I just said that.
Absolutely yes.
Yes. You won't regret it.
Yes, he's knowledgable and will prepare you well for a future in engineering, math, or physics.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He's amazing just the way he is. Except smoking too much. Maybe that's why he's always happy...?
He is very helpful and kind.
I like that he let the students work on the labs at their own pace. He is also very fair and understanding.
18. Other comments:
Take care!
He is the MAN!
The lab location needs work. It's a very small room with very little air circulation. It stinks. The lab equipment is old. There should be a better system used to maintain and keep track of the equipment.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Everything. Best professor I have taken after 3 years of college.
He knows physics very well. He almost always has an immediate answer to students' questions. He's like a second counselor in that he also gives advice on which classes to take for Engineering and Physics majors.
hes knows his stuff. explains well.
He explains what he will do on the class very very clear. And he suggests/advices us for our major as well too.
positive attitude, fun class, very down to earth, helpful
He is a genius.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None.
I would have liked to get my grades for tests back sooner.
I dont think so.
online course is very hard to concentrate and take seriouslly. I feel the need to look over online lectures to fully understand the course material. Maybe have two classroom classes instead of one classrooom, one online class? but very effective and good instructor.
Handwriting.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Available at any time and will even encourage students to e-mail him questions so he can look them over.
He is always willing to help students that ask for it. He holds or helps with study sessions throughout the semester. He gives outside sources that can further aid students in physics as well as his archive website with lectures and sample problems.
checking up with us making sure we understood the material and talking to us when we were falling behind
You ask help, you guarantee it will come.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Have already recommended quite a few of my friends. He prepares you for higher level engineering classes.
Yes, for the reasons listed above.
yes, hes an excellent teacher and really fun
Yes! I strongly recommend him to students who will take physics class on next semester. his lecture makes me understand physics easily.
yes, makes physics fun

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Herve is knowledgeable in the subject and passionate about teaching it
He really knew the subject and taught it effectively. He was also able to engage us to really learn it.
He know everything about the subjects, and He will guild us step through step which is very nice, if we have question we can all ask him to get our solutions. As a student of his, i strongly recommend him to other students.
He made physics exciting with his energetic personality and crazy sound affects!!!
Herve is very knowledgeable and kcc needs alot more teachers like him.
Mr. Collin made understandable online lectures showing the essential concepts.
Is very accessible. Always makes extra time for students. Allowed us flexibility in doing homework and tests. Strongly encourages participation and teamwork--created good atmosphere for learning. This is important because I've come to realize that how necessary it is to have good people to study with. Also was very knowledgable about classes concerning engineering degrees. I consulted with him a lot for planning courses. Informed us of various opportunities: scholarships, internships, expos, etc.
His knowledge, attitude and efforts toward students are tremendously amazing helpful to study in Physics. Even if the subject itself is very challenging to understand for me, however, through his assistance made me take an interest in studying in Physics. I really appreciate his many helps. Million Thanks!
He is very passionate about what he teaches.
Professor Collin's strengths are: 1. Knowledge of the subject matter 2. Availability to his students 3. Concern for his students 4. Overall good character
Funny and knowledgeable which keeps the students up and entertained.
Very responsive and facilitates a learning atmosphere very well in an online setting. Very approachable and willing to put in the extra time to help you learn.
He knew the subject matter like the back of his hand and was very confident in presenting the material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
Nothing
Be more organized. Was difficult at times to find a single resource to use for review. Perhaps leave out the advanced topics. Just the basic material by itself seemed hard. Maybe have chosen problems listed for homework (not graded) so that we can study more efficiently (we're very busy--not a lot of time). But not a super long list of problems--that's too much to look at. Maybe just post a few problems for each of the concepts we need to know. Make just one resource that we can use for everything. It's confusing to have to consult 2 or 3 different resources throughout the semester.
If he wrote more clearly on the board, I could understand well.
I do not have suggestions pertaining to style or method of instructing. I do suggest that for the online classes that students be made aware of the various buttons and tools at the website used. In particular, Elluminate, used Fall 2010, offers buttons for raising hands, indicating a student, though logged in, is away from the virtual classroom. There are other buttons to indicate understanding or agreement. Many times the Professor asks for input but receives dead air instead. It is as if students do not want to be the first to answer, which is ok. But it takes away from the flow kind of like the awkward silence when attempting small talk with unfamiliar people. The hand raising button seems to be real powerful because it chimes a bell as well as indicating whose hand is raised. This is useful due to the time it takes to type in a question. If I raise my hand, the instructor is alerted to my need and can stop promptly, allowing me time to either type a question use the mic. In short, the buttons allow for a more physical approach to the virtual classroom. They also shorten the time lag between question/response, lend to better flow, and are fair indicators of individual attentiveness.
None at all. Except maybe learn to write better, it's a little hard to read his hand writing sometimes.
I think the online course does really well when the students are able to do problems together. When we lost time for that during class, effort was needed to do group work outside of class. Luckily, other students were receptive. However, maybe the class could use an extra hour as a discussion section to do problems? This will then give more time for lecturing so no need to go so fast. The pre-recorded lectures were a big help. Maybe having example problems to be covered in class provided beforehand will make it easier to follow as the drawings get really messy.
The course was pretty difficult taking concurrent with Calc 2. Some of the material that was taught was up to calc 3 & 4 level and was hard to grasp. The class moved rather quickly and it was pretty tough to keep up with all the terms that was being explained just after reading the textbook. I just think that I wasnt fully immersed into the subject before we got into the real meat and potatoes. It would be read the book, look at some formulas and then hopefully youll be able to understand whats being worked out. Curved Grading? Physics is a tough subject and to pair it up with grading based solely on tests surely made it tougher. We should be graded on understanding the material, not on our ability to take tests.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Herve gives you his full attention when he can and is very prompt about answering student questions via e-mail, chat, or in person.
He would see our confused faces and would find a way to make a certain subject clearer.
As this semester, Herve changed something in order to help us as student to get to know the subject, and improving our grade through doing some group homework every Friday, and that really helpful in many ways. It provides some more time for us to get to know the subject and we could ask questions if we get confused on our ways.
He went to each student and made sure that they were doing fine.
He was available outside of class.
Making extra time for students. Being flexible about tests and homework (everybody is busy).
Professor Collin was more available for his students than most professors I have studied with. When he says shoot him an e-mail, he means it and acts on it.
He goes quick with the material and lectures on the important materials. Shows concern for students by periodically stopping to ask if everyone understands, asks if there is anything someone would like to know, and warns what is on exams (generally), as well as reminds the class of recitation sessions.
Gave many opportunities to ask questions inside and outside class.
Encouraged questions from the class and I was surprised to see that he took criticism very well when it came to making mistakes during lecture hours. I could truly see that he was genuinely caring and that he taught at a level that was friendly to students. Always available via e-mail and easily reached.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, Herve is one of KCC's best teachers
I would definitely recommend him to other students because he teaches it so well and makes it fun.
Yes, As a teacher he's excellent. And sometime he just like one of us, which makes us want more.
Yes because hes explains the concepts really good!!!
No. The in class sessions were extremely fast and difficult to understand. The impression I got was that the instructor did not care that he was leaving everyone in the dust. No one I spoke with understood the majority of what he was talking about.
No. The class was too difficult.
Yes, It is hard not to learn something in his class. But you really have to earn your grade.
Yes, I would recommend Professor Collin to others. He is more than knowledgable and he truly wants his students to excel. So, he makes himself available to help them.
Yes, I learned some topics that was skirted by another professor I took. So it was a good experience knowing why those things were while I was just told to memorize it by the other professor I took.
Definitely, yes.
I would definitely recommend him to other students. He can teach at a level that many people would be able to understand. Physics is a tough language to begin with but hes able to weaken the blows by his ability to present the material in our language.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Best physics teacher I've had so far.
You did an excellent job this semester, and thanks for your help on everything i have been ask before.
He is a good, talented person. I understand that he was very busy this semester (perhaps stretched a little too thinly) and maybe that's why he was a bit disorganized. But he adapts very quickly. I have no doubts that he will improve his class a lot.
Very difficult class material and testing but presented very well with almost unlimited resources via internet, class, recitation, and meeting with teacher. Overall a rewarding class to be apart of.
Mahalo
He should teach at UHM, the teachers there aren't nearly as knowledgeable.
He really knows the subject and makes it fun and interesting.
He is one of the more enjoyable professors that I have taken and hopefully ill get to take his classes in the future. The work was tough but it was worth learning. Off the subject, everytime he taught I thought it would be Georges St. Pierre teaching the class. So it really caught my attention hehe.

I've never been to the recitation, but I can tell from the other students that go really benefit from it.
Thank you for teaching!!!
There was a lack of clear, coherent, and careful presentation of the materials in this class, in my opinion. The in-class sessions were, for the most part, ineffective. With this type of teaching, I'm not surprised that students are not opting for science and engineering.
None what so ever.
Hope we get to meet again!

this class is self learning class. I cant pay for more than $900 for this class.
Lab assignments force us to think. If we didn't think, we wouldn't have been able to finish the lab reports.
Even if this Lab class is 1 credit, I learned a lot of valuable thing. For example, I learned how to write lab report. Based on my Lab classes (Chemistry) experiences before, I used the way to just fill out given questions or write simple answer in one or two sentences. As keeping doing report, I felt not hard writing report than as I felt it at the beginning of semester. Also, I really appreciate to Jihan's help who is working as a tutor in lab and lecture classes. I got many helps from Jihan to keep up with these courses. His explanation in his recitation session is very clear and it is easy to understand. While working on Lab reports, our lab members got many helps from Jihan. Thanks, Jihan & Prof. Collin!

he makes the lecture very fun and always available to help student, he has the talent on teaching. he is the best teacher in my life.
he is really friendly and always willing to help
As a teacher, I would say that Herve is an excellent instructor that tests students fairly, and allows for students to apply what they have learned in a real life situation. He knows his subject area well in that he can answer questions swiftly. He encourages students to study study study so that we can grasp the concept, which allows us to apply it in our near future.
super knowledgeable and when he doesnt know he wont make something up, he just admits he doesnt know.
know what how to teach his class. he is very clear. although i would say try to write little bit clearly on the board.
He is always willing to help students. His lecture is also very useful and easy to understand. He is very intelligent and gives students well organized lecture all the time.
Extremely well organize. Very helpful to students. His lecture is very clear and he knows what he is teaching. He also has this website which has recordings of each of the different chapters, so students can use it to review and have deeper understanding of whichever chapter they feel like they need to work more on. He is willing to help students after or outside of class whenever he is free. He demonstrates his care for his students by constantly sending email regarding scholarships, opportunities, or any interesting things which might be helpful to students.
interesting
he made sure everyone understood the material and answered all questions
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
please carry the cell phone all the time.
he should complete the problems in class.
He should teach a little slower. Sometimes he goes too fast and I get lost if I don't read ahead. I know that time is very limited; however, if he teaches slowly then more students will have a grasp of what we are discussing in class.
ah the class is soo hard, but its good for us.
NA
Seriously nothing. Keep doing what you're doing!!
Nothing
if he could write more clearly and neatly on the board, then will be perfect!
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
yes
Herve showed concerns for the students by encouraging students to spend at least 2 hours a day reviewing Physics. He also posted great lectures on the website that allowed for students who have not attended to have a chance to review what they have missed. He grades test fairly based on the steps you show whether you get the right or wrong answer.
much. he made sure we all knew what was going on in the class and was already ready to re-explain something.
really good. if any problems come hes always there to help is.
He showed his concern for students very well. He helped students whenever students were in trouble.
Emphasized the use of the tutor if needed, and always asks for questions
he is awesome, I like him a lot.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes.... i would invite students to take his class. because students will have a great experience in his class.
n/a
I would recommend Herve to any student. He is a tough, but interesting and humorous teacher that helps whenever a student asks. He posts online lectures so that students who could not attend have a chance to review what they have missed. Teaches pretty fast, but all his lectures are understandable and he teaches students Physics shortcuts to solve complicated problems.
yup. just warn them that 170 is tough.
yes yes yes.
I would recommend Herve Collin to students because not only his lecture was very useful, but also I could learn more than I expected before the class.
Of course. One of the best teacher I ever had. Herve Collin and Andrew Pak are two teachers in KCC which I will never forget. Extremely helpful teachers.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
NA
As a teacher, he is entusiastic and provides students with more confidence in passing the class. He teaches quickly, but he tries to let students figure out what to do instead of the students asking for help every single step. This way, as we become adults we would have learned something unlike being given the answers through life.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
NA
Herve should extend lab hours on Thursday. I know he is busy, but sometimes our group has questions that cannot be solved via the internet. 30 minutes is really a short time to engage in learning the concepts or calculations needed in the lab.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
NA
Herve showed concern for us students by extending lab assignments in a fair manner. He felt that students were piled up with loads of assignments that could leave us unhappy. If not for the extensions and positive feedback he gave on our lab (as well as the negative ones so we could learn deeply from our mistakes), we would be having trouble studying and preparing for other classes as well as making a perfect report to submit.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
NA
I would recommend Herve to students because he is a positively optimistic instructor that challenges students in his own way. Herve would manage the Phys lab with the lecture in order for students to engage in the lab without confusion, but more interest. He grades labs truthfully, giving negative as well as positive feedback in order for students to realize that the mistakes we make will lead to mistakes in the future.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
NA
He is an excellent instructor, but I would recommend that you are more available for the lab so students can ask questions anytime, or rather, on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

16. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
he know what he teach and he teach well.
he eemed to know the material well
hard to really assess because I did not participate in online class meetings
he was very willing to help and was very positive and supportive. he was awesome for being an online teacher.
willingness to walk through concepts repeatedly until everyone gets it
These hard courses are very difficult solid courses, but due to the teaching skills, knowledge of advanced technology, etc, the instructor set the course instruction to a high advanced degree, never let up on the pace, made the course independent where you practice severe self discipline. As for more advance courses in this method, highly recommended, but only if the same teaching methods as these instructors.
Very helpful! Making sure evryone understands the course material and eager to help students. Good availability during office hours and very prompt on replying on emails.
The instructor is always prompt and makes accommodations for students. He responds to questions quickly and he explains material until someone understands it.
Since it was an internet course it was easy to watch over the videos over and over if i was still confused. The videos he made was very useful and helpful.

18. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Aside from the dim sessions online maybe you could setup a schedule for those who would rather meet with you in person and do problems on the board.
Work on hand writing and anunciating
nothing really, he's great for being an online professor.
I cannot suggest any changes because these instructors keep advancing and improving.
this class should be made into an actual class (not online)
Posted answers to homework problems were not helpful.
none
Make the exams slightly easier.
19. How did the instructor show concern for students?
always welling to help his students
gave us a tuesday dimdim session
he made positive remarks about questions asked by students
he took the time to write out emails and was very encouraging.
With these courses, the instructor has a more direct and daily, hourly, minute by minute monitoring and guidance with their students. Questions, concerns are only a timely e-mail away. Instructor has timely responses to any concerns.
Making sure everyone follows the lecture. Stops lecturing and answering student's questions and clearifies, rather than just keeps going with the material.
he ask us if we understood during online discussion
Always responded to emails.
The instructor asks everyone if they have questions before moving on... Literally, by going down the list of names.
he would answer any questions and/or make suggestions.
20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, becauce this class is really challenging and you weill learn alot from this professor
Yes i would recommend other few students do take his class. He is very helpful and shows concerns towards he's students.
the only thing I didnt like about him was his accent and handwriting could be hard to understand.
sure, from what I could tell of e-mail responses to other students, professor Collins seems willing and open to answer any questions students have about the material. His replies are always prompt.
definitely.
yes, he was fair, and made ample opportunity for students to get help
If you like learning by independent, directed reading then I would highly recommend the course to other students. The courses are strictly for self independent disciplined students ONLY.
Yes. great teacher. you learn a lot.
he does try to help us when his available but most of the time his not available
Yes, A very good teacher. If you put in the time and effort, you'll get the grade you deserve.
yes because the other teacher who teaches CE at kcc are horrible.

didn't have to physically go to class.
flexibility
The heavy independent course load developed self discipline regime in me.

Ability to take other classes.
Class is right inside of my room!
The ability to view section video lectures as many times as i want. If anything was unclear i could watch the video over and over.
26. What did you like least about your online course experience?
exam kinda late at night.
I always thought that the online course dim session for an hour is too short because there is only so much you can do.
some of the lectures didnt load, and limitations due to my hardware
nothing
it was harder to stay focused and keep up with the material since it was online.
takes a lot of self-discipline

tendency to procrasanate with homework
It was hard to know who was in the class. Since the project required groups to be formed group work had to be organized outside of class as well as the formation of a group. Difficult to gauge how one does when compared to the rest of the class.

16. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Hes creative and makes cool sound effects. He can be pretty funny. Really knows his material. very understanding and wants us to pass.
I like how he had his class set up... he had student read and for the class time we would do problems on the board for clarification on subject topics. During lectures he was also very lively seemed "more human" and did not seem like like he was reading a script.
he knows what can be the students problem for math and physics and he can go through the problems to refresh the mind.
He is very knowledgeable about Physics and all prereqs for this class.
His knowledge on subject matter and his ability to get students involved with school work. also preparing us for the next level of classes
he knows the subjeck very well
He knows his subject area very well
the best thing about him he is very friendly and so it is asier to ask him questions.

i think he should change y=the way he does the problems in class. he should be more organized in lecture during the class.
19. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Gave extra credit and listened to anyone who didnt understand the material.
He addressed any question i had when ever i would catch him, in and out of class and office hours. When in class he would also address students question with respect even though other students would get irritated of the student asking all the question. He really did seem concerned about our education. He would every now and then go off on small tangents to explain what is important topics that need to be concentrated for the corresponding majors so he was very knowledgeable of the subject topic and sub-topics.
yeah from the begining of the class he kept tellig us that this is a hard course which requires at least 2 hours of study every day.
He was always available, he offered recitations, and had oral exams on fridays.
got involved with their progression through college, giving advise on what to be ready for next semester.
He was always very helpful
20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
It depends on the person. if i think they can handle the course then yes, but if they just want to pass then no.
Yes i would recommend this instructor to other students. He speaks and teaches at the student level of language rather than being so formal and monotone. He also makes all his explanations very clear and concise.
yes 100 percent because he works hard for the student. if u tell your weak points for math and physics he can work with you.
Yes, because he is a great teacher.
Yes, he always has the answers and if he doesn't he'll go out and find it. make going to class and learning enjoyable

i would nott highly recomend him

Yes, the class is hard but the instructor is fair and ensures that the students can think for themselves and solve problems they may faace in real life.
Definately. First I think it's worth it just to meet the guy. Its reassuring to see a cool and friendly professor in science. You see professors and think 'that is what I will become, right?' Second, hands down best teacher I have had in the UH system.
