6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

I think the critiques are always the most valuable. Chae gives you his opinion in a way that makes you remember but also pushes you to do more. Although I get frustrated with the constant revision, I know in the end that he is pushing me to do better work and not just be an average designer. I also think that the lab time to just work in class was very valuable. In comparison to 200 lvl I felt that the lab work times helped because he could show me then and there whats working and what is not rather than going home and not really knowing what to do and hoping what I was doing worked.

The production elements of this class were helpful, things such as folding and book binding demos. I also thought the numerous critiques, in different styles (ie group crit vs individual), were helpful in developing our projects further than we would've without them.

Pretty much everything. I feel as though I've learned more about typography this semester than in others. I not only learned a lot, but also was able to refine the skills that I already head. Critiques were always informative, and always helped me move forward with my work. He used analogies very well. Analogies that made sense and made you think, which was quite helpful.

I find the critiques and the 1 on 1s we do often in class really helpful because then I understand what is/isn't working with my piece.

Chae Ho Lee teaches much more than the course work that is required for students to learn. His career insight and demonstrations are valuable for prospective graphic designers. Craft and details orientation have been very valuable as well.

I believe that all the projects and the way that we went about them throughout the semester were all valuable. They very much relate to our major and the way that we are supposed to think and do our projects in the future.

I learned not only about typography and the structure of design, but also oral and communication skills that is used within the graphic design industry.

The most helpful parts of the course were Chae's feedback and his critiques. He knows how to get to the point and tell you if something isn't working, but in a way that doesn't put you down. Also. he puts humor into his critiques and comes up with random analogies and metaphors that are funny and relevant.

Individual critique of my work and why it isn't working along with specific suggestions about how to improve the work were the best part of the course.

His lectures. They where very insightful not only to the craft of graphic design but to the lifestyle and everything that one will encounter in the field.

No suggestions.

The structure of the class was good. I think being aware of all the projects in the beginning was helpful. I wish we had had more instruction on things like the identity system earlier though, so we could have been working more effectively on it simultaneously with the bus schedule.

Chae's style and methods of teaching are great. He comes up with the best scenarios for me to retain information and to never make the mistake again.

Only thing I think could be improved was the one on one time with students. Chae floats around the room, going quickly from student to student to give a quick critique and move on. More time spent with each student getting to know why they are doing what they're doing, and helping them progress would work a bit better. Not spending 15 minutes each time, but maybe 4 or 5 minutes so that ideas can be shared.

I don't think I have any complaints about his teaching style and methods. There was always a reason to why he did things and it made sense.

It would be helpful, especially in the composition project, if issues were pointed out more thoroughly in the critiques rather than saving the surprise until the work is graded.

You can't improve Chae, he is just being himself.

What I like about taking Chae's class is I feel like I'm getting my monies worth. Even though it's difficult and I feel like I need more time with things, I know he is preparing me to go out and work and not have surprises on what design really means.

So far through my college career, Chae is the best professor I ever had. He is straightforward, tells it like it is. When my work needs help on he is accessible for me to ask questions or clarification. He is enjoyable, funny, and just a great professor. There is never a dull moment in his class!

I enjoyed this class immensely. At the end of the day all you can hope for from a class is that you leave it better than when you started. I can say for sure that I did. Things I learned in this class will stick with me for as long as I'm doing design work, and probably well after. So thanks for that.

Students should want to be graphic designers when taking these courses; if not, they are wasting their time and aren't trying. This course has been very helpful and informative.

I learned more about type in the first week than in all my previous classes. I liked that there was no alternative to improving dramatically. Thanks Chae!

Being able to have more freedom in choosing our own subjects for the projects

working more conceptual rather than "given" a project challenged me the most.

The projects were more challenging than the past courses in terms of concept. The content was based more on our own idea addressing a larger social idea. The projects helped us to build better social skills which will help us in our career.

He is able to clearly explain how a future in graphic design will be for us students. He makes us realize what we should expect and also prepares us with added knowledge to be productive and successful in the future.

The diversity of the projects and how we were informed about how it would relate to real world situations/projects. The criticism and the truth were helpful as well.

Working on a project that was focused on me; the Experience Project, was valuable. Even though I struggled with it, it made me work to think and I learned a lot about what you need to listen to and what elements there are to pull from as far as themes and content. Very stressful project for me but one of my more favorable.

After the critques and lectures it would sometimes be more helpful if we could leave and work outside of class (library, on site, etc); it feels more productive than just sitting in class for a few extra minutes just working individually on the computer.

I think that the class is at its highest potential. Chae is doing a great job in keeping an integrity for the design class that I have no suggestions.

I wish that extensions were not given (at least not secondary extensions). It's good in the sense that we have more time, but realistically such things don't occur.

I think the critiques and feedback comments were one of the most valuable aspects of the course. It helped me continue to improve my project(s) and it really pushed me pass my comfort zone (in a positive way).

The projects helped me further my creative ability with typography. Learning how to create hierarchy within the structure and pay close attention to details to add variation and emphasize structure. The critiques were very beneficial because it helped the students improve their work.

The most valuable aspect of this course was probably the knowledge passed on to us by instructor Chae Ho Lee. This invaluable information did not give us a direct path to a perfect design, rather it aimed and succeeded in guiding us to a much more refined piece while still allowing our own creativity to have influence. In doing so, Chae had developed design (typographical) students with much broader insights into the design community on a world scale, not just locally.

Learning about project 2. This project was very tough but because I stuck with it, I was left with this feeling of accomplishment in the end. It was such a struggle to be able to organize and think about TYPE on a level that demanded so much. Logically, it taught me how to organize tiny detailed type that conceptually makes sense. I learned a lot more about indesign. Also because Chae was more hands off for this level it forced me to think about design on my own, like how it would have to be in the real world.

Perhaps more insight into creating covers and folders, from cuts and design to color and placement.

bus route assignment could have been explained clearer in the beginning

Maybe when project 2 comes around for other students chae could let people not be in the dark so much especially if they are the weaker students, but I guess that could be a good method to force them to think for themselves. I think his methods are like this: theres a method to his madness. So I think his style has been very effective thus far.

I felt that just being in class everyday was very important. I also felt that the critiques were very helpful whether it be critiquing on my own work or my classmates work.

I found that the instructor is very motivated, organized, and knowledgeable about the curriculum. In his critiques he always keeps it interesting by mixing up the theme of how we look and critique work. The technical knowledge that I learned was priceless as well as the theory.

I think his teaching style is very good and I don't think there's anything in particular that needs to be improved upon. If anything I think showing more examples of the projects would be helpful.

Chae was scary in the beginning but as it turns out, he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He pushed me past what I thought I was able to do, and I'm really pleased with the work I've gotten from the class. Even though it may not seem like it, I've really enjoyed doing the work for all of the projects and spent way more time on it than I ever have with any other kind of homework -- and I only signed up for typography because it was a required class! I never really had an interest in it and now I can't believe how much I've come to like it. So very glad I got Chae for an instructor.

the demands on research benefited me the most. The more well researched the project was the stronger the concept of the final project.

I think that for the most part it was nice to have a professor that is very knowledgeable in many different subject areas, but also with life in general. I know that I have been given a completely different perspective on life that I would not have put any thought into otherwise. Chae's class is refreshing.

Every aspect of the course was valuable. Each project helped me grow as a designer and I felt like I grew a lot this semester.

I liked the fact that this course taught us skills that are practical and it gave us room to diversify ourselves from our peers. The knowledge that he provides us is priceless. The life lessons are more so.

I believe all the hands on craft techniques he taught in class, such as book binding or different simple folds on paper that could make a cover or a whole book layout. I also think the one on one time was very helpful to understand the work that was given better in class

The entire course is valuable. Everything that Chae discusses with the class has an importance and relates to what we are learning and also to our lives. The reading material Chae provides help students understand the projects. The projects make us think in a complex way to increase the value of our work.

this course challenged me in many aspects, it made me think and challenged myself everyday. I learned a lot about certain problems in design and how to approach them.

The projects and what we learned by doing them. With the book project, it was the first time that we designed a multiple paged document. With the Fanzine project we learned how to design web based animation.

Chae's teaching style is awesome. He felt more of a mentor than a teacher. Occasionally he might assume we know more than we actually do, but he quickly notices our blank faces and repeats the instructions.

I almost feel like this course should have a lot of mini projects. There is 3 projects and I do understand the importance of allocating the amount of time for each. However, as a student I would feel more enriched if I was able to break away time to time from those 3 projects. Much is due each day and that is also understood seeing that we only have 2 classes a week, but to compensate for that I would definitely like to have more classes in the week. The space gaps between the classes allows for a lot of procrastination and laziness which happens clearly but it is a pain if it slows down the progress of the class. I think that if there is constantly things offered in class, people will not miss them and in turn it would not slow down the progression of the class as a whole.

Making posters without using images. I learned a lot from this.

The second project was quite beneficial.

Learning about the different types of typography and the vocabulary helped me understand what typography is.

The knowledge that the instructor knew and shared about type was so helpful to learning typography.

The rigor which was expected of the students helped create better work and provided a motivational atmosphere for the students.

Being able to get to work on projects right away Chae/Class critiques - they didn't drag on too long!

going through the iterative design process and being asked to constantly produce more and better design each class. the history and background info about typography was also interesting and added a level of academia that i really appreciated.

Learning type layout and the vigorous training and breaking up of type were helpful. The type exercises made me sensitive to type around me. I learned more about how type can be beautiful and have texture on a blank piece of paper. I think Chae is a great teacher and everything he does has a purpose. I don't doubt anything he says.

The brainstorming process before every project which definetely helped save a lot of time. Reading material was very important and learned a lot like parts of a typeform and the classification. The projects helped develop a sensitivity to type and its purpose.

Learning about typography and how it is an art form. Type plays a huge role in design and can either help or make a design work.

Knowing where to place text in an effective way and communicating without images.

The most valuable aspects of this course was learning the different concepts and elements surrounding the field of typography. Gaining a sense of knowledge of the structural system and process behind type. This course allowed me to expand my horizons by helping me to think critically and apply my ideas in a creative matter.

We should learn more about the typographers and the history of type.

improve on expanding out the different types their out there and interesting articles would be helpful just for reference.

the instructor knows what he is doing and how to use humor. I think being hard on the students was beneficial in the end because we learned more and had better projects.

I quite enjoyed the course and as a student feel that the class was challenging and definitely required growth on my part in order to keep pace with what the instructor expected of the students.

it would be really wonderful to involve content in the course, because i honestly think it would enhance the learning. type remains really abstract when you keep being told that what it says doesn't matter and that it's just about the compositional ideas. i don't buy that.

Teaching style is great especially the constructive criticism during the critiques. Towards the last projects though it may be because we have more freedom, but it seems vague in terms of what is expected from the project.

I feel that the instructor's teaching style is very on-point. He knows what a student should learn about typography that is relevant. He knows what is the difference between a bad design from a successful design.

No suggestions, the teaching style helps students push themselves and accept criticism in a good way.

I think Chae did an amazing job and was encouraging but critical when necessary. He is extremely knowledgeable about the topic and increased our knowledge in the subject as well.
