13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Encouraging discussion and stimulating students to think insightfully about the subject and form opinions about controversial topics.
Dr. Hew is great at connecting with students which makes learning much easier. He makes class fun to go to and encourages us to do as well as we can in class.
Professor Hew is flexible with the times to take test. I can honestly say if he didn't give us an extra day here and there I wouldn't be getting an A right now in his class.
Very knowledgeable regarding the course work and helps to break the material down in a way where most to all of the students can understand it.
Dr. Hew is very passionate about the topic of molecular biology. He is also very knowledgeable. His major strength as a teacher is that he motivates students. At least for me, his effort and care made me want to try harder in class.
Brian, you are a fantastic educator, not just a teacher. You're willingness to help us and explain things in different ways really helped myself and my classmates learn the material. This is a difficult class but Dr. Hew, you took the stress out of it and focused on us actually learning and thinking independently instead of being solely focused on tests and exams. You're brilliant in your field and I'm glad I had the chance to work with you this semester. Thanks again.
Dr. is extremely knowledgeable in his subject matter and honesty cares about his student's success in this course.
Brain Hew is extremely kind and encouraging. always accessible for help, and really encourages his students to think outside of the box, relating real life situations to the concepts covered in class. Really applies concepts learned to "the real world." Very helpful, always willing to help the students, easily approachable.
Entertaining! Very well versed in the subject matter.
He knew a lot about the subject, and was available to students during office hours, online, and email which was quite useful.

He is the first teacher I've had who effectively implements the flipped classroom approach. His recorded lectures are useable references for covering exam material. They are also concise enough. They do not disrespect your time. He uploads a lot of animations/visual content on to laulima that I found very helpful. His in class lectures are a good mix of participation/exercises and content delivery. Since he also works in the private sector as a molecular biologist, he brings an industry perspective which KCC students are not often exposed too and that is valuable.
Building and maintaining a warm, successful learning classroom environment. His ability to relate to the students and to use a variety of methods that incorporate other disciplines as well. Patience and being flexible! Being prepared and organized at all times. I like his ability to be flexible and teach in different situations, such as in-class and online lectures. Class was very interactive and participation in group discussions was very helpful.
Dr. Hew really stepped in the students' shoes and was accepting of any schedule changes and was really accommodating if we weren't able to make it to take any exams/ quizzes.
He's young. And likes beer. We didn't consumer any beer together though.
He is the kind of professor who has dedicated his life to his craft, so to teach this class plays to his strenth.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would have preferred if classes were slightly more structured. The discussions were valuable and informative but there were instances that I felt that too much class time was being used to answer questions.

The only change I can honestly suggest it to put less multiple choice on the tests, that seems to be what brings everyone down in points. But other then that this course was great and further enhanced by love for biology.
Give a BioInformatics tutorial in class in the beginning of the semester to help students understand how to navigate around the website better for when they attempt the homework for it.
I think his class for very effective the way it was.

This course went WAY too fast. As an engineering student I take other challenging course at UH Manoa, however this class took up the most of my time and effort. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but even I felt like the learning pace was too fast, especially towards the second half of the semester. I found myself constantly drowning in work for this class, a chapter per lecture, 3 chapters/extensive outlines due over the course of a week and a half, a quiz and a bio informatics project practically every week and a half. The quiz's aren't your typical quizzes either, they are very in depth (similar to taking a short midterm). It was a tell tale sign that we were going too fast because he would not have time to go over and lecture about each chapter in class, and instead always ended up sending us the second half of the chapters via email to go over ourselves alone. To his defense, he was always willing to answer any in depth question via email, which I really appreciated.
More lecturing, and less online videos. A lot of the time was spent going through the bioinformatics project that was already turned in. Instead, I felt that we should have been learning new material for the upcoming quizzes.
EASIER on the proteins!
Another strength is that he offers additional assignments for students who either don't test well, or are in need of remedial knowledge. One idea is that he could offer extra credit to students who turn in chapter outlines on the day of the lecture for that chapter. Or chapter outlines on the day of the exam. Make sure to Set a page limit (eg 3-4 pages per chapter). This will teach students how to id and summarize only relevant content. Then, simply spot check the outlines and return them at end of class. These outlines will bolster the grades of those who don't test well, pressure students to keep up with the readings in the textbook, and the outlines will be excellent review material for exams. The bioinformatics projects need some work, and this is a tough one because I understand that they are not Dr. Hew's creation. I for one, feel like they should be kept in the course, but I would opt for a 3 hour intensive tutorial/project like "See. This is what you can do with all these open source tools. Boom. Now, come up with a project idea and use these tools. Report back via power point or poster at the end of the semester." Instead, we learned about the bio info tools bit by bit over the whole semester. The information delivery was diffuse, andit was hard to get excited about dreaming up potential applications for the tools.
More literature discussions based on current area of study. Maybe to allow students to focus on personal interests in the molecular biology field, have them review/share/discuss some primary lit. sources (Possibly biweekly) to expose to scientific-based research and apply it to individual interests. The projects really showed how many people had their own personal interests in the molecular biology field.
Speak a little louder..? The classroom's ac and other students spoke over your voice sometimes, I tried really hard to sit in front of you or at least nearby to hear the lecture.

Sometimes the dialogue of class strays from the subject on hand, but still pertains to the subject of matter.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He is probably the most available and accommodating professor I've ever taken.
The examples that were given in class were relatable and he always made sure the class understood concepts as a whole before moving on. Dr. Hew takes time out of his personal life to record online lectures that are extra handy for tests and quizzes... all in an attempt to make sure his students do well.
Yes! Professor Hew took his students feelings into consideration a majority of the time in terms of tests and other factors.
Discuss with students personally about how they are doing in the class and what they can do to help better understand the material and do better in the class overall.
He reached out to students when ever he could by trying to communicate with them. He was always available and he often met with students even if it was not during office hour. He was also available until late at night online.
Brian was very flexible with students and worked around their schedules when conflicts arose.
Dr. Hew was easy to speak with, made students feel like their opinions mattered and was accessible to everyone outside of class.
He is extremely approachable, was ALWAYS available via email, prompt with in depth responses which I really appreciated.

He was prompt with posting quiz/midterm scores on laulima, and emailed back efficiently.
He met with students and tried to understand each individual circumstance and tried his best to help them in those circumstances.
In numerous, numerous ways. He offered flexible exam scheduling in the testing center. He hosted online office hours in the evenings, at times that were convenient for students who were working. He also explained complex biological concepts with a high degree of patients and congeniality.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely yes. Cell and molecular bio is a class that is probably only going to be taken by people going in to the science or health fields. The information presented in his class and the emphasis on discussing ideas and solving problems forms a strong basis for moving forward to more complex or challenging environments. I have already recommended the class to several of my friends who have not taken it.
I would recommend everyone that needs to take BIOL275 take this class from Dr. Hew. I almost took this class at Manoa this semester but am super happy I ended up taking this here at KCC. I feel I learned more in this class than many of my previous bio classes. I would not say that this class is easy, but if you actually study and take advantage of all the resources provided (online lectures, study guides, ect.) you will do well.
Yes, he's tough but fair. As long as you really put effort in then an A is very possible. He'll make sure you know your stuff. If he was a regular professor I would love to take more classes from him.
Yes. He is very knowledgeable about the coursework and tries to help students out as much as he can while still giving them room to grow and improve on their own.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Hew to other students because I have learned so much from him and I have not had a better experience in a class.

Yes, he is a great professor and his class will really get your mind thinking about what biology projects you might want work on in the future (career wise). Is always interested in any biology related projects you are working on and willing to help/give feed back. My only gripe is that the course went way too fast.

Yes, because although his class is tough, he offers a lot of extra credit which will definitely help your grade. But it is a lot of self studying, and videos, so students should be prepared.

No one would have felt bad if you told Bart to shut up, we were all tired of hearing him ask his damn questions.
He's a great person that cares about his students and does everything he can to help us do well in class and make sure we learn. He encourages us to think about things outside the scope of whats in the class. You can tell he is genuinely interested in cell and molecular biology and it shows in his enthusiasm to teach this class.
Great job professor! If you ever become full time then I'd love to take another class from you.

I heard about 3 or 4 of my classmates candidly say throughout the semester that even though there is a lot to learn, that they love the course and that are learning more in this class than any of their other sciences. Shout out to Dr Hew!

He is approachable. He is understanding of student's situations and makes himself available to help. He is a great professor.
Telling us what needs to be done in order to get a certain grade.
He is very knowledgeable about the course content and is willing to go above and beyond to provide assistance to students.
Dr. Hew can explain concepts and ideas quite well, and he's very helpful both in and outside of class time. He's also very patient and attentive to his students' concerns.

Breaks down information in a way that students can understand such complex topics
Deep knowledge of the subject. Relates well to his students. Good speaker. Creates a great class environment, almost everyone participates in class. Which is unheard of for that size.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Structure the class and don't change it throughout the semester! It got confusing.
I personally don't prefer the online lectures since there are a lot of technical problems that are associated with it. I also tend to focus better if I'm in a physical classroom. I feel like my grades started to drop as soon as the online lecture system was implemented.
Considering this is his first semester teaching, Dr. Hew's improvement curve has been pretty impressive. His exams are challenging and I personally think he should keep it that way. However, I also think he should focus more on preparing his students for exams by making his lectures more inclusive, explaining more of the material during class.

Maybe just a little more organize but not a big issue at all.
Work on more interactive lectures, ie, IClickers for attendance and participation credits towards overall grade in class. Also, go over BioInformatics Projects in class before assigning homework on it so students understand how to navigate around the website and don't get lost finding the information needed to answer the homework questions.
He needs to make the class more organized and make his test easier and understandable rather than just pulling his question from a pool.
-Organization for class goals. -I felt that some students took advantage of your willingness to take time outside of school to improve the class, i.e. the blackboard collaborate. I'm somewhat conflicted over this because originally the class lectures were great and reflected the proper example of a class. I definitely enjoyed class when we discussed GMO legislature and how it affects us. Discussing real world problems is important and we were able to discuss this because of blackboard collaborate. On the other hand I didn't find blackboard collaborate better than re-reading the book. Hence i'm conflicted.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He emails student about missing assignments and finds a way to help.
Tells us due dates.
He offered extra study sessions and his office hours were always open for students to come in and ask for help.
He's a good communicator, and will reply to emails right away. He's also very patient and takes the time to go over questions and concerns outside of class.
He was always available after class and was willing to negotiate grades if needed.
He did study sessions and was always available to use.
Go over problems on exams that most/all students miss, reflect on quiz grades and explain why certain questions had specific answer.
He was always available to help.
Countless office hours and after school help. Online help. Discussion boards. Blackboard collaborate. Discussing real world issues related to Cell and Molec. Encourages students everyday at class. Listens to student concerns/needs. ACTUALLY REVIEWS EXAMS AND QUIZZES! Most of my teachers never review what we missed.

YES! Because he is approachable and his teaching methods are effective.

I would recommend this class to those who want to learn how to survive a difficult subject and get the most out of it.
If the class structure is re-organized and tests are changed in a way that relates them to other classes, then yes.

This year, Cell and Molec was my only class where everyone actively participated. Most of the class actually became friends. I find this so rare for upper division courses.

His knowledge of the microbiology. He is really in depth about what he knows. He's easy to talk to and ask for help. Very approachable
Knowledge and being personable. Taught with an unbiased approach while prompting critical thinking of social and political aspects of microbiology in our world today. Great teacher.

Brian Hew had a strong heart for his subject. He expressed Microbiology as a way of expressing himself and to me, that is the best of a professors ability to express those reactions to students. It helps them with interest in the subject and encourages them to learn.

Yes, Brian Hew always was on top of checking his e-mail and replying to us students. He was very reliable and almost met students outside of this regular office hours.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Passionate toward microbiology. I feel Dr. Hew has a genuine interest in the student's success in the course. Expertise in field of microbiology lets him emphasize important concepts throughout the course, preventing an overwhelming workload on the student.
His knowledge of the subject and his enthusiasm about wanting others to know about the subject. Very interested in his students not only doing well and knowing the subject but also in making what we studied highly interesting. Was good at explaining complicated mircobiotic processes so students could understand. Gave us lots of worksheets and readings that were helpful in improving our knowledge even further.
Being that it was his first semester at KCC he was at first very unsure.. but the knowledge of the information is his strong point... his orginaztional skill and the worksheet that he provide help with us in knowning if we had really grasp the material
His passion for microbiology and very knowledgeable on every concept. If we would ask a random question and he didn't knew the answer, next class day he would show up with an answer.
Seems to know the material quite well. He is fun and funny. He makes the curriculum interesting. He provides extra credit.

His strength is that he is a professional in his field. Unlike most professors he brings a lot to the table as far as teaching goes. Many professors at KCC seem to know just the subject matter and regurgitate the subject. Dr. Hew is not one of these professors. He is an asset to the University.

He has a good heart wanting to teach others about micro knowledge. And this ambition can broaden student knowledge and change the world.
He makes class very entertaining by discussing topics in terms that we can relate to. He also really cares about his students and would do anything just to make them succeed. Dr.Hew is a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher and you can tell right off the bat that he enjoys this subject very much.

Don't concern yourself too much with student opinion. It's great that you worry, but remember, you're a teacher. Your job isn't to make us happy. Your job is to prepare us for our respective fields, and I doubt it will be as forgiving in the future as you are.

He was very concerned for students to do well for themselves. he made much time for study sessions and always answered any e-mails with questions that i had promptly. his plan for the class was well-organized and he followed the syllabus to a t.
