18. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Very important topic taught by an instructor with tremendous knowledge on the subject matter. Glad this was offered!

The workload for this class should be worth 4 credits instead of 3. The cases were lengthy and dense, and the midterm and research project take up so much time, that this class was way more than a 3 credits worth of work. Subject matter was great.

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

I found the topics covered at the end of the semester most applicable to my major and interesting to what I will do. In class group exercises were the best thing to do.

Interesting and fun group discussion exercise that we could apply what we learned in class. These exercises made us think and learn about the international laws and helped us deepen our understanding of the material. My favorite ones were the immigration exercise (Nordicland and Southernland) and discrimination exercise (Amish people). Professor Petersen was very knowledgeable in what she teaches, and used many interesting examples to explain the conventions. This course made me more interested in this field, and I definitely recommend it to whom ever is interested in international law.

I enjoyed the lesson about human trafficking.

Dr. Petersen has a lot of experience in dealing with Human Rights issues, and I like how she keeps abreast in current issues. She is very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed her lectures immensely!

The in class discussions. It gave us the opportunity to use what we had learned, or promotes us to learn more.

Learning about international policies and how they are making an impact today

Professor Peterson's talk in human right from a legal perspective showed a side of the world that I really did not care too much for because it really did not interest me before. I can honestly say I have a newfound respect for this subject and now take seriously current events happening in the world.

12. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

I think all the materials that was taught in class was valuable.

I enjoyed all aspects of the course.

Nothing. Everything was good and worthwhile!

Nothing really. It was a two and a half hour lecture for the most part, so at times in the beginning of the semester, it felt dry.

32. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

Provide even more in class group exercises

I think more group exercise should be done (for each chapter?) to help the students get involved and make them think and learn, since sometimes it is hard to keep our focus for 2 and a half hours on the lecture. Also, it should be made sure that students have 5 minutes bathroom or water break since it's a long class. (I feel like sometimes we didn't have a break)

Nothing. I'd recommend this class to other students.

She can continue to keep up with current human rights issues and discuss them in class. She did fulfill this in our class, but I would like to tell her to please just keep up the good work as she has been doing this semester!

A few other assignmets would be nice. Just a worksheet or something to help us to understand the laws a little better, nothing to crazy that is going to be too much work though.

I believe that the material was quite good. I would like to have seen more application and group discussions which really helped me to engage in the lesson fully.

I liked the class grading policy. I feel like it was a fair class and the material was challenging enough. The only thing I had a problem with was that the Professor would lecture for 2 and a half hours straight and it was a little tiring. If there was more group discussions that would help. Another thing I couldn't stand was that 2 students would dominate conversations in the class and not let other students have a chance to speak. I think the professor should have those 2 students stop talking after they say a certain amount, especially since they hardly ever contribute anything to the conversations except to express their own opinions on EVERYTHING she has to say.

This should be a permanent course offered in PACE.

Thank you so much for a very enlightening course term. I knew when I took this course it would be challenging trying to keep up with the reading. But as it was challenging it was also interesting to learn all types of facts and opinions from fellow classmates and of course through you. Thank you for opening my eyes and helping me truly see the world. It was a fun and wonderful experience!

The break down of assignments to weekly writings was useful in allowing reflection on and connection to the course material being learned.

One of the best courses I have taken at UHM. Extremely interesting, professor was on point and organized. Course work was fair and expectations were very reasonable. Class discussions were adapted to fit the interests of the students. A tiny bit reading intensive, but understandable given the content of the course.

She was a great instructor and made my interest for international law and human rights grow.

She is one of the smartest professors I have had. This is the second class I have taken with her and I would gladly take another course taught by her in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course! I feel like I have learned so much more than I originally expected.

Dr. Petersen was a wonderful professor. I didn't know very much at all about politics and the way law works (especially human rights law), but now I am confident in my knowledge. Also, I am now much more interested in current events and I make sure I read the newspaper every day. This class and especially Dr. Petersen were excellent.

Once a week classes were very hard because I have a short attention span. I wish this class was a tuesday thursday time block.

The readings were interesting, but they were not always stimulating. However, class discussions made the readings more stimulating.

Thank you Professor Peterson for a wonderful class and sparking an interest in the law. I hope to take further classes from you at the law school.

Dr. Petersen was incredibly informative about all the information, and strongly encouraged discussion regardless of personal views.

Prior to this class, I had absolutely no knowledge about international human rights as I always thought it was too complicated to understand. But Dr. Petersen made the class interesting and simplified many hard-to-understand topics.

15. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

1) Keeping a journal of news events and relating them to the course material. 2) Simulated mediatied negotiation - showed me how it works it practice. 3) Classroom discussion of readings.

What I found most valuable is learning about the different aspects of peace - negative and positive - and how it connects to events happening around the world. The ability to connect what I learn within a classroom and direct that towards the outside world reassures me that what I am learning is essential. What I found most helpful of the course is that Dr. Peterson is a teacher that genuinely cares for the students and assures us that we understand the material, and if we don't, she will go over it until we are confident. Her communication with the students is wonderful because we are updated with the class, her whereabouts if she will not be in office hours, and sends/prints out weekly guidelines for the class. Dr. Peterson has a very structured course that is both suitable for her and for us.

I found the assignments to be most helpful. I thought that the in class assignments really demonstrate the complexity of peace. FUN! I also thought that the guest speaker Kevin was really interesting and gives you a real eye opener that people don't see in America. I think people make it easy to forget that USA is at war.

having class discussions to hear our classmate's viewpoints and debate with each other. i really liked the mediation simulation from group 1. It was really helpful to be a part of that. Plus is was good to be able to brush up on my mediation skills again.

Having to keep up with current events and reading multiple news sources. In addition, the extra talks/events that we were recommended to attend were really interesting (and worthwhile in regards to class as it could be included in our journal).

Groups discussions and negotiation simulations were the most valuable for me. Also the time that Professor Petersen devotes to speaking and clarifying things to her students.

I can't think of anything that was not valuable.

I enjoyed this class very much and did not find any problems with the course.

Everyone showing up to class sick. NOT COOL on the students part. I really liked the course and didn't see any flaws with the course or teacher.

There were a lot of journal entries. Maybe a minimum of 26?

Dr. Petersen is very inclusive and keeps everyone in the discussion regardless of the level of their understanding or comment. She has personal experience in the human rights field and was able to use that knowledge to enrich the lectures and discussions. A great teacher!

I hope she teaches more classes at the Undergrad level. And not to repeat my self, but I cannot reinforce on how she is an intelligent, good-humored professor. Her years of experience and knowledge of the law is amazing!

AWESOME, really knows her stuff. If I ever felt lost in class and didn't want to raise my hand to ask a question, she could read my face and try to explain it in a different way. Really personable and made everyone feel comfortable. GREAT teacher and I would recommend her as a teacher in whatever class she teaches.

Professor Petersen was an excellent instructor for this course. Her knowledge of the field of peace studies, international relations, and international law made her comments especially valuable. This was a well-presented, well-constructed class that tied together the textbook, current events, classroom discussions, interestng lectures, and writing assigments. It really increased my understaning of how the UN functions to support human rights objectives. I looked forward to this class throughout the whole semester.

I strongly recommend that more PACE course be offered and more promotion of this wonderful department.

great class, but 26 journals seems like alot to me. The journals were actually a great idea to keep us informed of current events and relevant topics, but i think maybe 15 journals would be a better number.

This was the best course I took this semester. One of my favorites. So exciting and stimulating!

Professor Petersen taught a great Peace Studies survey course. The course covered a broad variety of topics, but were more easily understood by their application to current events. Overall, I learned much more than peace studies- I learned about aspects of international law, foreign policy, and current events that are invaluable.
