5. To complete this course successfully, how many hours each week would a typical student devote to course work outside of class?

In order to complete this course successfully, I think a typical student should devote at least 2 hours each week to course work outside of class.

Personally, I think that a typical student should be devoting 5 to 6 hours on coursework out of class for better results in his or her writings. This simple task will only help you complete the course successfully.

8 hrs per week

The amount of time needed to on this course depends on the level of the student of course. I did not spend much time on the work for this class. but i know that my fellow classmates spent maybe 6 hours a week

At least 25-35 hours a week

About 18 hours each week.

I work at lease four to five hours a week usually but lately I have been working on my research more then all my other classes.

each week a student should spend atleast 2 hours everyday so that would add up to 14-16 hours each week

A typical student would devote about 4 hours a week to be able to get the course work finished.

around six hours a week, which may vary depending on the student's abilities.

A typical student I'm not sure, but I did about three hours per subject. This course was easy to understand with the guidence of Mr. George. I feel many people in my class would say the same thing about him to.

6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?

I found that the writing assignments were most valuable and helpful because it allowed us to look at our mistakes when it was handed back to us and then we were able to correct them.

I found the little reminders and lessons on the mistakes that we would often get in our essay very helpful. The way Mr. George would take time during class to realized our little mistakes have vastly improved my writing skills.

Gary George is probably the best teacher I have ever had. He wants everyone to be successful not only in this class, but all classes & in life. His teaching technique provides a clear understanding of how to write and work in stages. He is available to review homework and in class work, giving each student advise.

I didn't believe I could write until I entered this class, it boosted my self confidence in writing and I am very fortunate to have a teacher who sits down and explains each concept with you. I learned also that anyone is writers, and that writing is a very essential tool to everything we do in life and job.

I found that learning correct ways of writing makes a paper or document much more neat and organized.

The one thing i found most helpful was the correction codes on our essays and the hacker writing book. this book really help me understand more on what i need to work to better my writing skills as a writer.

I learned how to write a research paper better then I did in my AP class my senior year in high school, I also learned parts of history which were really interesting. And my writing has greatly increased.

How much the teacher enjoyed teaching

When we would write a relfective journal concerning our last written assignment. I felt that was helpful because it helped me reflect on mistakes that I have made in the past and the mistakes that I have improved on.

This course helps with composition skills (as the course is titled), increasing your ability to write fluidly, effectively, and in different styles.

I found that gary george enjoys teaching. this is valuable because students tend to learn more when the teacher enjoys teaching.

I think that the hacker book that we use in this class was very helpful. When we get our essays back, we have a chance to correct our errors. This is where the book comes in handy. This books help us learn and understand what we did wrong on our essays. So i definitely think that the hacker book was very helpful in this course.

The thing i found so helpful in this course was Mr. George's ability to make the most sophsisticated thing understandable and funny. He always has a talent to keep adiences listening. This helps me a lot because i find it hard to focus in most classes, either cause it's boring.

I think he could improve the teaching of this course by giving more examples of the papers we had to write about so we have a better understanding of what we need to cover.

Maybe spread equal time on each student for individual help.

At this point, I cannot think of any improvements. I wish all teachers had the ability to express themselves as clearly as Mr. George.

I would suggest him teach a Social Studies course to be honest. But ways to improve the course would be to give books for further classes to read.

Mr. George may improve teaching this course by maybe using powerpoints presentations a couple of times during the semester.

Well the course is fun and very helpfull, perhaps more writing assignments. The reason why I say so is, because I had a lot of fun with it. I never really thought I was capable of writing something people would like to read.

He is amazing! He is so intelligent!! He surprises me with his knowledge at every class! This man has a heart of gold. He is like the "great sage" with his students. He cheerfully and very willingly imparts his worldly knowledge on students to make their life more productive and successful.

15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

My overall evaluation of Gary George would be that he was a good teacher and that I improved my writing skills throughout the course.

Very good teacher, his lectures are very interesting and motivating so get us in a writing mood. Very informative teacher, straight to the point when correcting our papers.

I have already sung Mr. George's praises to other students and strongly suggested that they take his class. If you trust his teachings and listen to his planning, you will be able to tackle any problem. His theories work, whether at school or throughout life.

i found that using the eBrary is very helpful in finding books that i needed about my topics

English 100 course with gary george was good because he helped me fix my papers and he let us turn in a revised copy of our final essays so that we can get a better grade.

the basics and review of such are both, most helpful and valuable.

This course really helps improve a person as self-directed learners.

I like when we get in to groups and edit each others essay.

I found that Gary George is has outstanding knowledge about his work and teachings. He made things more clear for me to understand then the book.

I found that the revisions of our essay was the most valuable and helpful. It allowed me to go back to review my paper and make corrections that needed to be corrected. It also helped me identify thing i need to work on and improve myself to not make the same mistakes again.

He is very good at and fast when proofreading my work. It's very helpful feedback.

With his teaching ethics, he is capable of getting his lectures out to his students. When a student needs help or questions on specific essay, he is there to help out. With his feedbacks on essays, that makes me a better writer.

Not everyone follows the news, maybe some topics relating other things can come in handy

maybe have less homework on reading in the books, maybe more worksheet type of homeworks. Other than that it was a good class

perhaps better anticipate a student whose only/main struggle is focus. Only at the end of the course, when our final research paper was assigned, i was hoping for more/better direction, advice, or suggestion when i found myself very stuck with "lifeplan 2021" I can fully understand and respect the intent of such an assignment, but considering it is a writing class, i crave creativity outside the box.

I thought the class was run good.

I feel Gary George does not need to change anything. Keep up the excellent work.

Great class, learned alot

I am a 53 year old student,and am pursuing a Degree in Business Technolgy. I started at Maui College totally" under prepared ". I entered to be retrained due to an Industrial Accident.Being a Freshman Undergraduate, I had to wait one month until my financial assistance would be approved.I started with no books, no computer and basically no tools to work with. I had heard of a Federally Funded Program that I qualified for " Pai Ka Mana" I tried to borrow a computer but there were none available. I was totally computer illiterate. I soon relized, that I fell behind from the very beginning and had to drop some courses that computer skills were a must.And by that time I was so overwhelmed,I needed help and suprisingly enough, the very instuctors that were supposed to support me actually, ridiculed me, making me feel worthless and alone,If I had Mr, Goerge then I think that he would have helped me.

I was dreading coming back to school. I did not finish high school and was dreading it badly. I am so relieved that I had Gary for my first class. Great teacher.

I can tell I've become a better writer after taking this class.

gary helped every individual in the class whether they needed help or not, he still walked around to every individual to see how their work was coming along. that was a very big help.

I learned the basics of properly writing essays

The topics of our essay had a critical thinking vibe to it. which made you really think and explain what you were writing about.

Gary has an incredible way of motivation to teach and also relates to whatever is going on in the world.

He presentation is very engaging and he is very helpful with anything we need. This is by far the best class I ever had and recommend it to anyone thats taking english 100. He is very knowledgable.

He helps each student individually and gives us exercises to do that would help us get used to writing and be able to visually see what we are doing wrong! he is a really good teacher and take his job seriously, but also has fun at the same time!

This course helped me and educated me more about writing. When I write essays for other classes, I simply remember all the rules for writing from this class.

I have so much appreciation for Gary. He takes the time to make very detailed and helpful corrections on my assignments. He is passionate about what he teaches and is always having a helping hand for his students.

Mr. George's knowledge. He is a genius.

The teacher reads all our work and gives critical feedback.He also allows us to edit and improve our compositions, and receive additional credit for doing so. This allows me to expand my ideas and write more freely as I know I can still have a chance to improve my grade if I make a mistake-it is a good learning tool.

He gives us enough time throughout the semester to review our essays with other students and interact with others.

It was helpful working in different groups because it allowed feedback from other classmates and not just the teacher, and revisions after turning a paper helped to get higher grades. It helps everyones grades a lot more to be able to do revisions for a higher grade.

I feel very strongly that Mr.George has taken the time to help me with my assignments.He is patient,kind and repectful. He has a great sense of humor and to me he makes learning interesting and fun.

Gary is a very knowledgable teacher. He had an answer for every question that i had and every difficulty that i came across, he helped me through it step by step and i could see everyday that my writing was improving.

No need for improvement

He doesn't need any improvement just keep doing what he does. Gary is very energetic, funny and smart.

I don't think he needs to change the way he teachs at all!

Maybe assigning a few reading and answering questions from the Bedford Guide as homework could help students get a better idea of how to structure their essays. I worked with a couple students that were confused about how and where to start their essays. They got started and didn't know where they were going. The book provided great examples on the structure and organization of an essay.

i believe that nothing should be changed. He is good at what he does and will be missed if he should leave Mcc.

Maybe some homework with examples of badly written essays that need to be corrected could be helpful. the assignment that required the students to paraphrase the articles was very informative.

he's a very good teacher. he helps everyone out and never denies anyone. i enjoyed this class and i think i'm leaving the class with a whole new attitude toward writing. i'm much more confident in my writing.

I absolutely loved his class. It was interesting because it wasn't ALWAYS about english. I loved how he mixed in a little history and poetry. I liked that there was little homeowrk which allowed more time to work on essays.

I wish that their would be more instructors like him. I have a learning disability and he is understanding and very patient with me.He takes the time to explain to me not only once but a few times until i get it.

I enjoyed his class but i felt that some of his essay topics were not very important. but that is just my personal opinion. others mught say something different.

One student in class was very "slow" and kind of holding up the class with non stop questions.

I wish he could teach more classes, but it's up to him.

I liked Gary's structure. He helped us a lot. He really explains things well and walks us through the process that he expects us to do. I feel that he cares about his students and gives us oppurtunities to recieve higher grades. I really like this class; it has taught me a lot.

What was most valuable to me throughout taking this course was the fact that Gary George was so willing to help. He always encouraged questions and was willing to assist us in every problem that arose, whether it was in class or not. I would strongly recommend his course for those who wish to learn not only from the best, but also from someone who genuinely cares about you. If I could I would love to take further courses from him.

The things i find helpful in this class are the tips and teacher/peer evaluation we have for each draft. This class does great activities that help me understand the purpose of each paper assigned. It also helps me to get started on the next paper.

I did not like this course at all, I did not learn anything I already did not know.

To me this course was very valuable. I learned how to type faster and not look at the keyboard as much. Also this class really helped me with starting a paper. At the start I had a hard time starting my papers but now its easier. Thank you.

I really liked the instructors passion for teaching and engaging the class. We always have interesting topics to write about at the beginning of class for a free writing exercise. It is always a stimulating discussion, and allows the class to get to better know each other. Out of both my classes this semester, I feel much more connected to everyone in the class, and know almost everyone on a first name basis. My other instructor is excellent as well, however, I enjoyed this English 100 class greatly.

Well, there are times when I'm not sure if there are other assignments that we must do. Even when I read the syllabus and class schedule he handed out, I am still not sure if I have other things I must complete. So perhaps he could send out emails letting us know if we have online things we must do.

Improve Peer Editing

Come up with topics that interest students. Not too much of the past. Sometimes, I felt like I was in a history class.

Focus less on politics, and more on ENGLISH. Create more creative assignments, and allow the student to have more choice in what they are writing about.

Well I really liked this course and don't really think it needs to be improved. This was my first English class in college in my first semester and I really learned a lot and really enjoyed it.

I do not think anything would have to be changed. The only thing anyone could possibly complain about is perhaps the discussions we have at time curing class about current events, but they are really to provide background for the free writes, and I am happy to be involved in them.

Gary is one of the best English teacher I have ever had. He really helped me a lot. When I came into college, I thought I was going to have a hard time and the teachers weren't going to help you as much, but Gary taught me a lot.

My overall evaluation of this instructor is that he definitely knows the material and he definitely cares for every single one of his students. He is an incredibly considerate and helpful teacher who is also uncommonly willing to help in any situation.
