13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

Miguel is a very good teacher. He opened up our minds much more than we had imagined. He is also very passionate about the subjects he's teaching. He is a great teacher who really cares about his students and their academic achievements. He was always well prepared and engaged us in thought provoking lessons. ...interesting Very good teacher. Passionate about the subject. He is very intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. I would recommend his class to anyone and would take another class off his. very good at keeping my attention. :) Very fun teacher that teaches us to question what we are told. Keep teaching and don't be so cynical! Just joking. Excellent teacher. He was able to engage the class and make us think/analyze/form our own opinions on things. He was very enthusiastic about the material which really made for some very interesting classes. It was great hearing about his travels which he often was able to relate back to the main topics of discussion. My thoughts on Miguel Llora are that he is a very enthusiastic professor which in turn motivates me to learn and pay attention even at 7:30 in the morning. He makes class interesting and at the same time I gain so much knowledge on the subject of World War II, American history and much more. I recommend his class to everyone because he is that great. He really takes the time to get to know you. For instance, he offered to let my boyfriend come on one of the field trips because is a strong advocate for learning and although my boyfriend is not a student of his he understands that every student should have opportunities to learn. He is a teacher who truly wants to see his students progress and learn, no matter what that presentation may look like or entail. I believe he has painstakingly tailored his assignments to be relevant to current issues and the learning style of his students. He is awesome and funny. Out of all seriousness, he has taught us how to keep our minds opened, being skeptical when studying history, learn how to think critically, and to be better in communication via various in-class discussions. Miguel Llora is a great professor. He is knowledge in his area of expertise and he keeps the classroom atmosphere lively and engaged at all times. Miguel showed in depth knowledge regarding this subject. He makes each class enjoyable and tries to stimulate in class discussions. He is a great professor and I would take any course he teaches again. really awesome teacher. he made the class and subject enjoyable and thought provoking. Awesome teacher! Extremely smart and passionate about the subject. Very funny and witty. A fantastic teacher, and also a great guy. Excellent professor.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I liked the class discussions the best because Miguel is very entertaining. I'm not really one for debates but the debates that I participated in really helped me learn much more than the regular way of learning where the instructor lectures and then the students take an exam. And it was quite enjoyable too. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the class where we could speak our minds and challenge traditional ways of thinking with our fellow students. The field trips and topic discussions I enjoyed all the in class discussions. The debates were a lot of fun and the movies shown in class. Reading on the Thalia Massie case and museum controversies. I liked everything! I think everything worked together. It was really nice how the class was structured. As assignments, the students presented material to the class and then Miguel facilitated the discussions and went more in depth into the subjects. I really feel like I learned a lot. I enjoyed doing the debates in groups because I feel it helps stimulate our minds to think outside of the box. To make a statement we have to know what the other team will say as a rebuttal so it is good practice to be skeptical in that sense. We learn to be analytical and strategic even though we are arguing about the past it will help us deal with problems we may face in the near future. I also enjoyed the field trips because we go in to sites with a different perspective than we normally would as a normal visitor. Miguel had two field trips but unfortunately I was only to attend one otherwise I would gladly sacrifice my Saturday morning to learn. I went to Pearl Harbor memorial with the class and during that time I believe I learned more than the other times I visited combined. It didn't have to do with the fact we had to write a paper about the site as an assignment, I took the time to analyze everything because I wanted to and I think that was Miguel's objective to teach his students to see things through a different eye and he did. I loved the class discussions. The reading were great, the presentations were good, the debates were a nice touch, but what really interested me, and what I looked forward to on a regular basis, was seeing how in class discussions would evolve, and reveal what my peer group things about these deep complex questions. - There are too much to list here but I basically like everything that we have been doing throughout this semester, especially the trip to Pearl Harbor (it really opens my mind a lot). - Another thing I'd like to point out is there are no exams required and I really like that idea because it allows students to learn without being stressed out and as a student, I'd say that is the best way to educate us and to learn, rather than just filling in our brains with stuffs and materials, which we will eventually forget. I enjoyed doing the weekly presentations as well as the debates. I really liked the in class discussions because it stimulates us into actually thinking out of the box. The debate was fun and working with people you're never worked with before was quite a challenge. learned a lot and teacher was awesome. It was interesting each day. It was not boring and the class even seemed fun. Miguel's lectures were very thought-provoking. The trip to Pearl Harbor was pretty cool. Also, learning to be critical of history was very interesting.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

I did not like doing the power point presentations. I did not like the time that the class started. The 7:30am start time. Went off tangent a lot. The time. The only thing I didn't like was the posts of important information to facebook. I don't have a facebook, therefore I missed some important information that should have been posted via laulima or myUH email. I did not like the Laulima posts, I did not see the benefits of them. I preferred to hand in paper assignments. So much long readings! Nothing. There was nothing really that I disliked the class. I enjoyed everything to the papers, reflections, reading, presentations, and debates. The only thing I would have to say is that Miguel can sometimes goes off tangent and will let us out of class after the scheduled time and I had another class soon after that which led me to be late a few times. But other than that, this course is my favorite of this semester or even my college career so far. I dislike writing assignments in general, but I needed a WI course so I'm glad it had many witting assignments, and given the fact this was a WI course I'm happy the writing assignments were there but... - Having to wake up at 6:00 A.M. for the class =___= I enjoyed every bit of the course. N/A none Not being able to attend the Pearl Harbor field trip. The two debates, but only because I personally don't like doing debates. They were still well-implemented and definitely a good part of the course. none

I really enjoyed this class, and I will recommend to others This was a very interesting course taught by a great professor and I'm glad that I took it. Just wished it was at another time. Excellent. I would highly recommend this course to my friends. I'd recommend it I feel like I learned. It was very educational and not like every other class the university offers. Very informative and entertaining. Variety of assignments given which kept the course entertaining. Awesome class. I learned so much in such a short amount of time. Very good class. This was my second time taking a class from this instructor. Always interesting. I highly recommend his classes. This class is wonderful and I am sad that I am not taking his class anymore. I wish he teaches other course that I can take but since this fulfills three requirements there is no other reason to take his class. But if I had enough credits and had to take a class in order to be a full time student it would be one of his. It was entirely not what I was expecting when I signed up for it. I don't think I'll be able to read a history text book the same way ever again. I love this course and want to take any other courses that Miguel teaching also! AMST319 a great course that fulfills the writing intensive requirement as well as ethical/ oral requirements. Students are encouraged to be active participants in this class; the professor ensures that everyone gets a chance to voice their opinion on the topic being discussed. I challenge students who are normally quiet and not active in class to take this course. They will transform under the supervision of Miguel Llora. You learn a lot of things from this class and it teaches you to be an analytical audience when visiting museums and watching documentaries 10/10 I am really glad I took this class. I would recommend this class and this instructor! Fantastic course. great course

Went off topic a bit too much. Enjoyed his class a lot. He was very funny and gave clear expectations. Satisfied with what I learned from the class Could have better clarity of what is expected. It was okay Great course! I hope to have another class with you in the future! You are awesome! I definitely enjoyed the course. I got closer to people in my cluster and definitely learned more about technology and research in general. Very funny, but gets out of topic very easily. This class really prepared me to write "official" research papers. However, the class constantly went into irrelevant tangents. He often shifted due dates, which became exceptionally annoying when he moved the research proposal due date up (apparently forgetting about the later date he had told the class). He is a very nice person, though. The course was more designed for research in humanities subjects. I enjoyed the course, but am a physical science major, so it was not as applicable to what I am studying. This class allowed me to take a more detailed look into how the internet permeates our lives. With this knowledge I'll be much more cautious as I surf the world wide web. Not only did it teach me specific knowledge I also got the general idea of how to conduct research at UH at Manoa (and how important it is to get IRB approval). Pfsr. Llora is a great teacher who is very knowledgeable concerning the conducting of research. The only class I had to look forward to this year. This was a fun course and I really enjoyed learning about (and doing) research! Miguel rocks! Miguel is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes a stressful class, nearly stress free, which made the class actually enjoyable. He was very understanding and easy to talk to about any problems that arose. He was always willing to meet with anyone that needed to meet with him. When I met with him it was always because I was stressed out over something and I always left stress free, with a clearer course of action to take and better defined requirements. If more teachers could be like him, I don't think University would be so stressful. The only bad thing I can say about Miguel is that he is leaving. :( He is a 10/10 teacher.

Promote him to a full professorship now! A rarity in that as a professor he attempts to combine traditional learning methods of readings of books and scholarly articles with today's availability of multimedia.

I appreciate the critical thinking Miguel pushed. I particularly appreciated the links and available documentary films which worked very well in conjunction with the course readings. I doubt I would have been able to grasp and learn as much as I have about new concepts and information had both sources not been present in the course.

Give him an "A" grade. I would 100% recommend this course to my friends and acquaintances, I think that says it all.

none. Would like to see articles a little more current -- too much 1999 - 2003 dated things -- study of older empires like of Rome, England would be useful as well -- some of the videos way too biased -- painful to watch or simply boring -- HOWEVER some were fantastic -- really interesting -- bottom line -- this course let me start to think outside the box and move into a different level of understanding regarding what to look for -- all in all -- great course -- great directions from Llora.

Excellent Professor! he is a great teacher! I believe he is the only UH teacher I meet that really care for his students!!! Llora is very passionate about the subject on public history and is very knowledgeable on the subject as well. He sets high standards for his students and wants them to succeed. Great Professor. Really cares about his students! that he was extremely effective in making us think and question traditional roles of history

Being able to have an open mind about topics discussed I like when he talks. His voice as well as his enthusiasm made learning and pay attention a lot easier I liked the order of it. It flowed nicely. I liked the structure of the class. Well prepared I got a chance to explore the historic landscape of Hawaii that my father lived through.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Some readings did not include the topic I did not like how he goes over class time. Although I like his class, I had work which made me be rushed Maybe be a bit more clear on assignments, was a little confusing I'm not a very good public speaker, so the oral presentation was the most challenging aspect of the course.

Excellent course Great course due to a great teacher. Highly recommend this course offers a high amount of information in a short amount of time. After taking the course, you will have a different mindset of history. One of the most enlightening history classes I've ever taken.

After your revision of the prompts I found it easier to answer the questions you had. Field trips are amazing!!!! Very good class, it is taught in a way that I havn't seen done before. He's great! a good teacher. I would definately recommend him to my friends. absolutely wonderful. Miguel is so passionate about his work and teaching students, and it really shows. Everything he does in class has a meaningful purpose and engages students to critically consider different aspects of media and ways of thinking. He is a strong professor that knows his material well to demonstrate to the class. He's style of teaching and knowledge has an impact on students to do more than just memorization of a subject, but rather a concept of critical thinking. He has a "great" sense of humor too. really cool teacher. challenges students to think really really really hard Every survey question stated above is pretty much strongly agreeable, and is accurate in that it describes Miguel. There isn't really anything more I can add, other than having the pleasure to take this class. He is a passionate instructor who is not afraid to explain the lessons in detail. He allows the students to direct the direction of the lessons. Pretty good, gets sidetracked from students in the class talking nonsense when he tries to get through his plans for that class day. Miguel is an excellent teacher and really knows his information and teaches us in an understandable way. There are sometimes confusing moments, but then he dumbs it down for us in simpler terms. He is passionate about the subject and provides us the opportunity to form our own opinions as we take in different angles on a topic. A really good AMST Professor Fantastic. Miguel is a very educated and innovative teacher. While being in grad school, he still maintains effective delivery of the material for this class. He's easy going and very open to discussion and he's always there to provide help. Miguel is seriously like an encyclopedia for this class. He's very helpful with sources and research and especially on giving feedback to improve your work. :) I really liked him as my professor. He went about teaching us the material in a very interesting way, which captured our attention. His class wasn't taught in the typical lecture and test style, but I feel like it was so much more effective in learning the history material. He was passionate and I would definitely recommend this class to others if he was the professor. He is a teacher who loves what he is teaching. He embraces it and presents it to us in a way where we want to love it as well. He not only teaches it but gets us involved. Talking about it, visiting sites, and learning more. Making me want to read about our topics. He's understanding, knowledgeable, and extremely entertaining and funny. I've never once felt sleepy in his class. I would definitely recommend him as a professor that you must experience! Great teacher, challenges students on a daily basis. great teacher, great personality. cares about all his students. highly recommend to everyone. very motivating teacher but needs to explain cenceptas at a undergrad level I liked that he was very funny and made the class very interesting. He always provided an opportunity for us to give our opinions in class. I liked the field trip, it was a nice opportunity to learn outside of the classroom. Miguel Llora is an amazing instructor and graduate candidate. Miguel's presentation of the material and its class interaction are one thing, but his genuine character and deep insight into the topics are just as valuable. He goes one step further in almost every aspect, especially in ways to engage the class in learning and providing an outlet for announcements and out-of-class material that is much more engaging and accessible than Laulima itself. While some of his insight may be slightly bias or lacking some backing, he is for the most part on point and his underlying point remains strong. Perhaps its due to being buried deep in the content and material for not only the class but for his own research that's introducing the slight possibility of tunnel vision, but it is in no way severe and if anything, just very slight on some points, the most I can verify due to my own studies are economic and some information-technology related matters. MIguel Llora is overall an excellent instructor and one of the best I've ever had at UH. I can speak that outside of class, many, if not all, of his students are continuously carrying on the in- class discussion outside of class not only on class material but for other applications and shows how our thinking has been changed and opened up. If there were one thing Miguel could improve on, it would be his impromptu-assigning of some assignments. It was not a frequent thing, but occasionally, say for example presentation evaluations, an evaluator would not be selected before hand until nearing the end of class, and it makes for some sticky not-on-paper-nor-clearly-assigned logistical work. While he provides a lot of content before class in preparation and out of class for further interest reading, his replies to emails could use some improvement. Short acknowledgement emails are OK but sometimes a reply is never received nor acknowledgement until in class and such. Again, it doesn't affect class that much, but in rare scenarios, these could end up creating some sticky situations.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

It was very thought provoking, I enjoyed the course. The freedom to discuss and express idea. The debates! I really enjoyed watching films that I have never heard of and finding interest in fictional historical films. The part about disney and the part about film. The discussions were the best aspect of the course. However, I believe that it would have been more interesting to have taken the course during a regular session. Open discussion I like going to site visits, like JCCH and would've liked to go to Arizona Memorial, and watching films from different perspectives. It gives me the opportunity to analyze and look at the different ways people approached filming our past. I also like the guest speakers that came in to give us more knowledge about the different topics. Getting to know there is more depth in American History than what we were taught The scheduled meeting at JCCH was inspiring and something I would definitely attend again. I liked learning about Honouliuli and I totally agree that it should be preserved for future generations to be able to learn from it. I also liked having the choice to pick which prompt I wanted to answer. :) I really liked the professors style of teaching. The topics covered in this class was also very interesting. I also liked the smaller class size, which allowed us to get to know our classmates. I loved the fact that he lays out the history and events surrounding a certain topic before letting us write about. During class he would go over readings and throw us questions that really makes us reevaluate our own perspective. how we should see the events in the past. open discussion I appreciated that Miguel was flexible in deadlines. When it looked like we were not going to cover the information for our papers, he pushed the due date back to accommodate out schedules. The deep insight offered into looking beyond the class content was amazing. It critically engages students into discussion in an open forum frequently and efficiently opens our minds to new ways of thinking, especially during short periods of time offered during the summer sessions. Miguel's constant search for new content and material keeps the class fresh and in some ways, never one term or semester is an exact 1:1 copy of another, which shows that the content and Miguel's methods are improving at every chance possible.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

n/a The time of the class. nothing I dread writing papers. papers. The assignments were a bit confusing, especially some of the prompts for the essays. Other students talking nonsense, unrelated stuff to the class. None None. Class is very manageable. And Miguel structures it that way. There's not any part of the class that I didn't find interesting or fun. horrrible essay prompts -- snipped -- Refer to the last review made of the instructor. Other than that, very little is not liked of the course. It's very fulfilling and reasonable with time, work load and the learning that is accomplished. * Showing 12 out of 13 survey responses.

Very good course. a must take class during college. If I could, I'd take it again. It was so much fun and I really enjoyed it. I think this may have been one of my favourite courses I've taken at Manoa. Outstanding. Out of all my classes in the UH Manoa campus, this was one of the very few classes that I was able to interact with my classmates and my professor knew my name. Great It was a great experience and a fun class. I would recommend this class to American Studies majors and other students that want to learn about analyzing how societies perceive history. A I absolutely loved the class and I learned a lot about our past that I've never known before, like Iwo Jima and Bataan. I don't recall hearing about Bataan or anything in my classes before and I like that he touched upon these issues. American History 319 is a good course to get a good look at American hidden history Great :) I am really glad that I decided to take this class with Miguel as the instructor. I feel like I actually learned something from this class that I will actually remember. It's an awesome class that really makes you think deep. In a society that revolves around the Internet and 'quick answers' this course really makes you stop and think and reflect on past and current events. It's definitely a course worth every single penny. I love it! Fun course. one of the best! easy but very complicated This course and the instructor are great, more so the instructor. If the course content were taught by another, it would certainly be a different experience all together, so aside from the curriculum being built or frameworked, the instructor and his methods were what made this class as valuable as it was.

Professor Llora was extremely enthusiastic about the material, and this allowed for constructive classroom interactions throughout the course. I think Professor Llora is very knowledgable in his study and definitely encourages students to participate and ask questions. He was funny and tried his best to relate to his students. Fabulous! Prof. Llora makes coming to class every week a breeze because of his entertaining class sessions. He made it definitely worth going to school and learning the material. I have gained valuable debating skills as well. He is a very passionate teacher about the studies of the island. Very knowledgeable about the subject and even more of the other history of the island. Fun teacher, always for of energy. He is a great teacher and just an all around fun guy. When he gets talking with a subject he finds interesting there's no stopping him. He is the best. So interesting and knows so much about the material. He is a very good teacher who would help you out in anyway; plus he does not make history boring what so ever. Great professor. Makes the course enjoyable and he is very knowledgable. One of the best teachers I've ever had by making something I care nothing about into something I now have a strong appreciation for. At the beginning of the semester, he outlined what seemed to be a very stimulating course of study. However, I feel that Miguel spent a lot of time in class discussing things that were irrelevant to the course material. No doubt he was funny and kept the class interesting though. I just wish that we had stuck to the course syllabus more strictly to allow more time to learn more about Hawaii, Japan, and WWII. Miguel is always going to be a well-like professor, but I think it is important that he focus less on talking story with his students and more on teaching the course content. I think he was a great teacher, and had an abundance of knowledge on the subjects covered in class. Veyr interesting class. Made me critically think about the topic and world issues. He was an awesome and very understanding teacher. He was very personable which made it easy to talk to him and also created a good learning environment he was a great teacher he enabled me to think of topics i would have normally never thought of my overall thought on public history has been forever changed Great teacher. Easy to approach, open minded, overall good instructor. Great teacher who knows what he's talking about and he makes class enjoyable to attend Miguel is an excellent teacher who demonstrated extreme knowledge of the subject matter. He presented information in an easy to understand way and encouraged others to voice opinions and thoughts. The readings were mostly interesting, with some dry material necessary to transmit subject material. The use of various media helped to make the class more interesting and fun, and also engaged students. We not only took a look at readings, but also watched movies, documentaries, and read the occasional comic. A great teacher that I would recommend to anyone. very good professor, one of my favorite classes this year. I think everybody should take a course with Professor Llora. He creates a learning environment that is fun, energetic and informative. He makes the curriculum interesting for students and is also very understanding. that he is an excellent teacher. To me, the topic of the class was not interesting at all-until I came to class on the first day and met Professor Miguel. He speaks with such knowledge and passion of the subject that it is contagious and hard to not follow along. He can clearly and effectively communicate to students in all ways to get them engaged to make the most of the lecture/learning experience. 15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

The best aspect of the course was Professor Llora's lectures. They were interesting and made us analyze history from "multiple perspectives". I like that we had prompts and papers that stimulated the mind. It's easy to write about topics that we know about but he had a spin to most them. He made me second guess what I previously learned and had me question the validity and point in which the information being shared was coming from. I like the analysis and emphasis of different perspectives. It kept the class interesting and focused. Love love loved the debates. It's a great way for everyone to be involved in one topic and to fight for it. I like how the course was very open for discussions and that we could speak our minds on the topic When Miguel would just speak his mind I felt I learned a lot, and I also really enjoyed the field trip to Pearl Harbor. Learning by doing and experiencing is definitely better than learning by book. I like the films and alternative media to learn the subject matter. Just learing the history from the past and comparing it to other events that happened. I like the fact that we were always engaged in discussion because it made the class a lot more comfortable. Videos The expectation of critical thinking and making connections to current issues and concepts through in and out of class learning environments. The discussion about the different topics we studied. The debates! I particularly liked the content matter of the class in general. All of it was very interesting. The reading too was very interesting to read and it kept my attention. I also really appreciated the class field trip to Pearl Harbor, which gave us the chance to put into practice all of the concepts and skills that we had learned in the class up to that point. Debates interesting topics, rare to feel bored in class the way we were able to think critically. the material we had learned all came together at the end which was fascinating. The feild trip was great really pulled the entire semester together and gave us something tangible to associate with the material we covered. I really liked how this course looked at history in a way that I have never looked at it before. I liked the class period. I liked everything about it. It was a class where you could express your own opinion. You wouldn't be judged for what you say or do. You wouldn't be poorly graded for not agreeing I with Miguel. Although it was a little nerve-racking, I enjoyed the class debates. I liked working with my group and how we all came together to try to be persuasive. I also liked the trip we took to Pearl Harbor as a class. The class discussions were also very interesting. i really liked the books that we read. Also the debates and discussions that we had I liked how everything was broken down into weeks and there was always a reason for learning what we learned. I really liked Honor Killing. All of them, but I have to say the second debate was my favorite. I liked our debates and the class discussions that veered from the normal topics. i enjoyed the books and readings we had to do they were interesting i also enjoyed the field trip I liked the discussions a lot. I liked hearing what everyone had to say about the various topics. I liked the discussions about the readings and about the subject matter that we were going over in class. I also liked the way that the class was conducted and they way that the professor was trying to get the students to think critical about the subject matter and the readings. Class lecture/discussion. It was a flexible class but at the same time we learned a lot and covered a lot of material I liked the fieldtrips that he planned the most. Although the trip to the Japanese Cultural Center fell through, we were able to visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial as a class. It was the first time in my college career that a teacher organized learning outside the classroom, and it was, I think, very successful. More teachers should organize fieldtrips to augment learning in the classroom. class discussions I liked that the course was not a lecture format and it was directed by class discussion. I also liked the debates as well as the field trip to Pearl Harbor. The lectures! Attending class lectures were fun and engaging. He really gets me thinking and those neurons in my brain firing. I liked the field trip we went on, even though it was during the weekend. A great alternative learning method not employed by any professors. The way the conversation of the topic in class always seems to flow so seamlessly is an indication of how well he knows his stuff and to what degree the students are engaged. Also, using the Facebook as a group for the class was very helpful in keeping up to date with the information. i enjoyed class because miguel is a fantastic teacher!

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

none -- snipped -- Sometimes the reading...But who likes reading required texts. NOTHING Probably the reading assignments, in particular the extra long readings. Sometimes I felt that the readings would often repeat itself chapter to chapter. I liked the debate the least but that's only because I get nervous talking in front of class. Just learning aspects of history that are boring/. Didn't like the essays but they were always relevant. Just not to big on critical essays personally. Writing papers I enjoyed the course and the set-up, but there was one field trip that fell through due to scheduling and communication misunderstandings. As much as the professor attemepted to instigate conversation many of the students did not participate very much in class disscussions. I would have enjoyed it if my peers decided to speak more during class. nothing. It was fun. It was one of those classes where time actually flies because you're having fun. The thing that I liked the least was reading a lot of articles. none i like it all None Time wasted at the beginning of class. Debates were rigged! I'm not a very big fan of public speaking, so I would have to say that all the oral assignments were my least favorite aspect of the course. 17. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Great class. Learned more in this class than in any other of my history classes combined. It was time well spent and really stimulated the mind. I have yet to see a professor stimulate my mind like he had. Again, his emphasis about perspective and the way in which we remember history was amazing. I think that will stick and follow. Excellent! Highly recommend to any of my classmates to take this course, whether required or not. My roommate is taking this class from Prof. Llora in the summer because of me! I came into the class honestly just looking for a grade but was interested in the topic. I quickly found out that it wasn't going to be an easy grade but one that would be one that would have me think outside the box. I really enjoyed coming to class and the materials were great. Even though it is only one semester I learned a lot more about Hawaii and the transformation it took when the Americans came here -- snipped -- I loved this class. Prof. so interesting and will talk with you any time. You can tell he likes teaching. Would gladly take another class from him and he gave me a unique perspective on subject matter. this course is a very good course if you want to challenge yourself and learn something from the pass. More courses at the University should incorporate field trips to bring the materials learned in class to a tangible sense that will resonate with students as with our trip to Pearl Harbor's Arizona Memorial. This class is not only excellent, but is the only class that I've found to fulfill an ethics, oral communications, and upper level writing intensive requirements, all in one class. very good, wouldnt change anything I'm pretty happy that I took this course. I initially thought it was going to be boring, but as we got into the curriculum I found it to be very "stimulating" (in my brain, sicko). I learned a lot throughout the semester. I highly recommended it to all my friends. one of the best university classes I have ever taken run and one of the most excellent professors you could find. THe fact that I came into the class with negative thoughts about it due to my lack of interest in the class topic only for Professor Miguel to turn a 180 degree on it and teach it so well for me to really like it. That ability is rare. I took the class only for the oral credit and got much more than I expected. I am glad I did stay in the class and not drop it. exceeded my expectations of the creative means on which the material would be covered. Going against traditional textbook interpretations of history, Llora really made our class use critical thinking to question the interpretation of history today. Using debates, class discussion, and papers students were able to really immerse themselves in the history of WWII. Llora is a compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent professor who clearly wants to pull something out of each and every student to inspire critical thinking. A fantastic professor. Passionate, excited, knowledgable, humorous. very knowledgeable of the subject. His teaching methods are awesome because he makes it very understandable for everyone He is very passionate about the topic and is passionate about sharing his knowledge with his students. Great teacher, clearly enjoys what he teaches. All classes are interesting. One of the few classes I looked forward to attending weekly. Fair and would always help students and give extra time if needed. He is fantastic. He knows his material well and really pushed us to become critical thinkers. He also made us comfortable with him and our classmates very early into the semester. Very fun and interesting person. Mr. Llora is a wonderful teacher! It is very apparent that he feels passionately about World War II and how we remember the event. He did a great job in teaching the course but the name of the class should be changed as it is very misleading the class is not solely about america Hawaii and WWII but rather about public history and museum ethics as seen through America Hawaii and WWII. Also it is hard to discern what Migs wanted from the students in his assignments. his prompts were often long-winded and left me confused as to what he actually wanted from me. also the lack of a grading rubric for assignments lead to this confuse as wesl (how can I give you what you want if I don't know what that is). he is a really good teacher! He's very knowledgeable in the subject area he's teaching, and makes class fun. The structure of his class was easy to follow, and he was always willing to accommodate with our needs and what we had to do for other classes. 16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I liked that he integrated readings and videos that related to WWII or to topic. I think many people either underappreciate this class or take it for granted, but i really learned a lot. We watched cartoons that helped me see the other side of the story. This class really made me stop and think about the society we live in. I liked that the class was more of an open-discussion style. The movies, readings, and the field trip really allowed us (the students) to not only learn history but to engage in what is being presented thus becoming keen public historians. I liked all aspects of the course. the debate I liked that we looked at the many bias' of history, because many times it is taught in just one perspective. We are rarely taught to be critical. The films were extremely helpful in understanding of the course materials. As an American studies class covering upon America, Hawaii and WWII, the films served as efficient visual aids to stimulate interest. The field trip to USS Arizona Memorial was very memorable. The class discussions were really open and inclusive, it helped solidify the class as one cohesive unit. The writing, the examinations of films, the readings, the debate, the field trip, etc. Going on the fieldtrip, just talking to him and feeling his knowledge on the subject I loved the debates we had to do library research for. I found myself enjoying doing the research for the debate, gathering with my team to plan it as well as the debates themselves which carried out to be completely professional and thought provoking. Class with Llora is a pleasure in general, so just attending class was enjoyable for me. The aspects of the course that I like the best was looking at different perspectives. Miguel helped us see many perspectives of social history. The films were very much related to the subject. His choice of films and video clips were perfect to whatever we discussed in class We covered many different topics, and I particularly enjoyed the sections directly related to Hawaii and WWII. I also enjoyed the fact that different students presented each week and summarized what that week's topic was. Class interaction and critical analysis of subjects. Learning multiple perspectives. The ethical section was the most stimulating, but I also really enjoyed the overall discussion about commemoration. Films. The readings were interesting, if long and difficult. Learning how to think about what we learn, rather than learn. I liked the field trip to Arizona Memorial and that he let us choose from a variety of options for our final paper. I especially liked the "applied" side to public history such as volunteering at 'Iolani Palace. The different topics that we discussed in class. If not for this class, I would not have been exposed to so many interesting topics and this class taught me to never look at history the same again. Especially enjoyed the field trip of Pearl Harbor Memorial, not having been their in over 10 years it was a moving experience to go back. Learning about pearl harbor and hiroshima I enjoyed attending the field trip to Pearl Harbor. I also liked the fact that he gave us options on what we could do for our final paper. He made life a lot more easier for me just because I had three other classes that I really needed to do well in. movies and readings matching up, field trip was good I loved that he was very understanding when we had trouble with a paper and gave those who scored low to make it up. abstract thinking, oral discussions and papers to better explain our knowledge and interpretations instead of multiple choice tests, we weren't just regurgitating information

17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Best class i have taken in American Studies. -- snipped -- nothing none Even though many of the movies we had to watch were helpful to be more critical about history, they were also really depressing. I would recommend to other students to take another class that is "on a lighter note," right after this class. N/A. I enjoyed every bits of this class. The in-class presentations were very informative, but left almost no time to really discuss it as we were busy trying to clarify the information. -- snipped -- Writing papers, yet it has to be done (its a WI course) Every now and then it is easy to get a little off topic, but if things get too out of hand Llora is there to get things back on track. I honestly can't think of anything other then that. -- snipped -- The beginning of the course started off a little slow. Some of the material wasnt as interesting as others. Colonial Williamsburg was the worst aspect because it was boring. However, in retrospect, I think it was necessary and a good topic to kick off class with. Papers. Class discussions were always fun and interesting. Lots of random tangents, but your stories are very fun to hear. I have no complaints. Didn't really care for the debate, but it was a good change of pace from the everyday assignments. I'm not much of a fan when it comes to learning about history, so at times it became pretty boring for me. Also debates aren't exactly one of my most favorite things to do, but we had to do it in order to fulfill the ethics focus of the class. students using lap tops to shop or look at facebook in class -- snipped -- maybe more background knowledge of world war II...i didn't have that entering the class so it was hard to interpret things without the base of knowledge, but maybe i should have had that before taking the course * Showing 19 out of 23 survey responses.

Deep and meaningful. There should be another part to this class, that Miguel Llora can teach. It was a great course. I think a course like this is fundamental to a university education in which, it helps us to become worldly scholars. It prompted us to engage in the world around us and think about how it could be different. a gateway to realizing that other persperctives surrounding historical events exist great course & teacher. Improved my critical thinking & working in groups (debate team) The class was one of the most informative course I have taken in university. Unlike some other professors, Miguel made himself available to communicate with the students, answered questions regarding classworks or simply the material covered that day. Efficient communication created the class environment very pleasing and approachable. Excellent, such a dense amount of information that never really weighed you down. I loved it and would give it the highest review! 5 stars I would recommend this course to anyone who is tired of learning history through the same tired method. Llora makes history interactive, thought provoking, and personal. He is an intelligent, funny, and enthusiastic man who clearly wants his students to walk away with new ideals about the interpretation of history. Through debates, papers, and even a field trip to Pearl Harbor it is clear that by the end of this class you will walk away with so much more knowledge than you had before. I loved this course. Very knowledgeable and very approachable, he taught the class with enthusiasm and motivated the class to think outside the box. Did a great job of keeping our attention in class! Really funny and really knowledgeable! One of my favorite instructors/professors at UH! He is very interesting, approachable, supportive, and knowledgable. He is also flexible and communicates well with the students. He is very knowledgeable and cares for his students. I enjoyed taking a class from him and would recommend him to other students. He is awesome! He's very passionate about what he teaches and he is genuinely interested about the well being of his students. Very easy to talk to and always makes himself available. I am 34 and have had many professors. Many other courses have had more information or "knowledge" necessary for the course, but I've never had a course or teacher who has caused so much thought on the topic. He and this course challenged me greatly and in a good way! He is the most amazing and brilliant instructor that I have ever taken at UH Manoa. He encourage his students to learn especially about history and our past. Taking his class really helped me a lot to broaden my horizon and have a better grasp about our country's history of the past with different countries. 15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Learning to look at situation in history from different points of view. No midterms, final. I really liked that we watched many films in this class, which connected very well with the course material. The articles were also interesting, and together with the films, I feel that I was able to understand the material better. It is also a great learning experience to go to the field trip to the Arizona Memorial. I loved that he didn't bombard the class with too much, so we were able to thoroughly go through all topics and do well on assignments. His enthusiasm and knowledge about the topics presented. Watching war films, field trip, reading necessary and important articles and writing different types of essays. Friendly environment made it easy to pay attention, give input and overall learn. Just talking about interesting subjects throughout history. There was a lot of reading. Readings were quite long and bland. The prompts for the assignments for this course were more open-ended than I was used to, which made the assignments difficult, especially the papers. Very knowledgable and passionate about the content of the class. Lecture was always interesting and I learned so much. Miguel is a wonderful lecturer. He has a passion for teacher, and loves what his teaching. ...he's one of my favorite members of the American Studies department. I hope he becomes a professor at UH afterwards. Professor Llora is a great teacher and mentor. He was passionate about the material and inspired us to become better at being critical thinkers. I enjoyed class discussions. the field trip to Pearl harbor and watching clips in class. Also the course is only 10 weeks so its great! Miguel's lectures were amazing. I learned so much. Also, the videos--he made us watch the most amazing and interesting videos. One of the things I liked the best was that it was well organized. I make this my first point because so many classes are not. In addition, I liked how he engaged the entire class in the conversations and encouraged everyone to express their feelings. He was respectful of all opinions even though some had opinions that were different than his. I also liked how he gave us choices when it came to our assignments as we were working on such controversial subjects and the range of topics impacted us all in such different ways. Some students really challenged him but he maintained extreme professionalism. It was obvious that he enjoyed his job and it wasn't a 9-5 ordeal.

Good course, and i think i like it. Professor Llora showed genuine and sincere concern for the class as a whole and as individuals. He challenged us and truly brought out things in us that we never realized were there. He taught us about American Studies but he went above and beyond by inviting us to seminars, and encouraged us to explore the possibilities of having a degree in American Studies. He also went out of his way to coordinate a trip to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. I couldn't make it, but it was something that he did and I give him credit for doing it. It was such a complete and fulfilling experience.

Excellent. He was always available for help or clarification, he was enormously knowledgeable about the subject matter, and he was enthusiastic about what he was presenting. I learned so much in this course. Very knowledgeable about class content and enthused about learning. He responded to students posts and was very thorough with comments. Some assignments were unclear...I didn't always know what was expected. It was an exciting, energetic, postmodern class that challenged us from the outset to reevaluate our basic assumptions and develop a self-aware, critical eye with which to engage products of cultural production. We inherited a sophisticated methodological toolbox from Prof Llora's ingenious triangulation of Morris-Suzuki, Rosenstone and Bailey & Farber's work. All theory was rerouted to specific stories that generated historical awareness about the War in the Pacific and forced us to become co-conspirators in the craft of doing, making and seeing history. We acquired a sense of Public History by engaging in the act of doing it and learning to question the assumptions of the discipline that contain. Professor Llora is very passionate about the course. He also knows a lot of information! He replies to e-mails very quickly which is good because the course is online and that is the major form of communication. Very nice man. Never met in person but via e-mail very respectful and fair. Also, I really respect Professor Miguel for being "accountable" for his actions. There was a incident of miscommunication over a e-mail and Miguel honor his word and apologized for the confusion. Many professors are "tight" and are NOT accountable for there wrong doings. However, sometimes Professor Llora does not clearly state the assignment which makes it very frustrating. The best class I've ever had. Well-organized and Dr. Llora made me thank a lot. Miguel's class was awesome to say the least. Great content/resources and many things to learn. Perfectly paced. Very interesting! Thanks miguel is an instructor i would enjoy another class with,his ideas are fresh and make you think. Good. Stimulates the students to look at events from a different perspective. he is an encouraging and supportive instructor. This class is very challenging, and requires thinking outside the box, which Prof. Llora greatly encouraged. I learned to look at history in an entirely different way, and was taught to investigate what is presented as factual discourse a little more carefully. Prof. Llora is obviously passionate about his filed of discipline, and I feel lucky that I took this class. I hope to meet him one day on person and thank him for his influence on my further studies. I liked his response to papers....how he graded and made comments. I could tell he read every written response, post, and assignment. The discussions! The enthusiasm of our instructor; the insightful texts he choose for the course; and the power of everyone's analysis of the cultural artifacts we examined. Everyone's engagement with the issues transpired at a graduate level. And it was solely because Prof Llora had the power to captivate us as he brought his subject to life (with special fx!) I like the weekly discussions on laulima. It was fun to read other class mates post (ideas, comments, thoughts). This is an Online course and Dr. Llora is always thinking about the convenience of students in mind. Especially the student who hook up into the Internet abroad like me. the class discussions were very engaging and acted as a constant feedback to the material learned. i liked the posts it gave me an idea of what other people are thinking. granted this was an online class and it was his way of getting us together but often in campus classes the students don't talk, don't contribute, this maybe the way to do it. I liked the videos the best. Miguel related the videos to the material covered in the class well. The materials were great! The movies were interesting and made it a lot of fun to relate it to our discussions and readings. I liked all the readings and the different videos that we watched and then looking at how they applied to the course, that was fun. I personally enjoyed viewing the films and discussing them after

I honestly cannot think of anything. I loved the online format which allowed me to do the work at a steady pace but on my own time, I liked the interactions, the materials, and the videos. Lots and lots of reading, viewing of film, and writing. I think this should have been a WI (writing intensive) course. The course could be improved by better coordinating use of Laulima with teacher-student interaction. The architecture of the exchange can be engineered a bit more precisely by establishing points of presence, either through scheduled live chat periods or scheduled presence on a forum. From my experience with online courses this term, that is the essential component missing from the class: Presence. Because of the asynchronous nature of these courses, people can feel disconnected because the interaction is a passive and a one way circuit and feedback is delayed. Asynchronous interaction is fine but its nice to fully synchronize sometimes too. -- snipped -- The announcement of assignment. I'd like Dr.Llora to make it simple. I mean the direction and instruction. Sometimes I didn't know what to do next. nothing. perfect coarse jus would be best with a light school load the post deadlines, but who likes deadlines,right? If anything the readings. Sometimes the readings were a bit much. Just that it was online and I like hearing Miguel lecture in person. It was a lot of reading, not that it was bad reading, just a lot of it. The weekly class discussion posts became a bit redundant and boring after awhile. My overall evaluation of Prof. Llora is that he is real enthusiastic and brings huge energy to his lectures, but I thought that sometimes he sounded a little too strong on his ideans or opinions. He has lots of knowledge about the subject also but felt like people are hesitatant to counter against his argument because it sounded too strong. Great class, was more than i expected. Great class. A lot of fun to attend and I learned a lot. He encourages students to freely express their opinions and to be critical. Good at provoking interest and curiousity. Llora's teaching style is more about teaching students the knowledge with strong critical thought without putting all of the focus on a grade. I feel many times the grading factor or standard makes people lose sight of what learning is all about, learning. American Education today has become a commodity, which the school puts more emphasis on money than teaching the students. This is a very sad fact, but there are still very few teachers out there who actually want to help students rather then let them fail while the school takes their money. great teacher however course material was dry.. powerpoint presentations went by too fast/too much writing -- snipped -- very good teacher The class was not an easy one, but Miguel helped me understand the topics by his way of teaching, such as videos, books, lectures and presenters. I enjoyed how Miguel was able to relate current situations happening around the world to the information provided in class. How strongly he kept involved in todays situations. Learning more detail about some subject I already knew about. It was good that it pretty much covered everything in the Pacific basin, and by topics. Writing was fun, in terms of reflecting my thoughts to the readings and films. A lot of new things that I learned... Review media The movies were very interesting. Incorporating everything together The films The videos chosen to fit with different sections. They were interesting videos that many of us had not seen. Class discussions were always interesting and very well constructed and put together. I actually liked the presentation of this class because it allowed for us to go about on our own and really review a article of our choice the way we wanted. He made us aware of outside of class events and lectures going on that he felt were interesting and pertained to class, which they always were. i liked some of the readings and videos. they were interesting and i learned alot more about the history of thepacific basin. I really enjoyed the incorporation of film into the course. It was not only relevant to the articles we were reading, they were helpful themselves as well. I've noticed that a lot of films classes show do the first part, but not always the second. I loved not having exams. Reaction papers are a fantastic alternate to exams. You need to know the material for exams and papers but papers allow you to express your feelings about the topic and not simply regurgitate facts. It wasn't just a history class. It was a history-and-its-impact-on-the-present class. Concepts were tied together, we didn't just skip from one historical event to the next because they were important. We explored why each event was important, and how and why they happened. The aspect of this particular course that i found the best is the in class discussion held after reading the assigned books. The discussions allowed students to give their opinions about the subject matter while creating an atmosphere that allowed all students to express their thoughts freely. the movies that were not documentaries and the reaction papers I liked the fact that the topics discussed in the semester correlated with each, which made it interesting. It was like connecting the dots. The class discussion was definitely the most interesting, because our class was so opinionated and diverse. The assignments made me think critically at the issue at hand. lectures, movies The use of film to explore topics further. Film is a great tool and helps me understand much more than reading. I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of this course. I enjoyed watching films that related to the course. Very interesting, Good way to interpret what he is teaching.

14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

nothing beyond the typical work that students do not enjoy but are expected to preform. writting the papers. Lots of readings... but it was fine. learned that much. Nothing -- snipped -- none The lectures Nothing. I liked everything about this class. Sure some of the readings were a little long at times, but they were interesting. Class was well put together and wonderful. none. -- snipped -- The 20 and more page readings were not my favorite but were tolerable. I wish there were more discussions, but it is hard to force people into talking. It is difficult to build into a discussion when its only one or two people participating. -- snipped -- I liked that movies were incorporated alongside the reading. -- snipped -- lectures difficult course material Really? None. The reaction papers. Some of them I had a hard time grasping what the main idea was about. As I progressed in the semester, I got used to how to write and format the reaction papers. nothing Lengthy readings. None. 15. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Great class, I look foward to taking more American study courses from professor Llora. Great course and I would recommend to someone else to take it I think about the first half was more interesting. Probably because I'm not that interested in modern history, but still the former part seemed more organized. Overall, it was quite stimulating and fun, and I learned new perspectives. Interesting course material and engaging classroom discussion. This was a very interesting course, I think if it was taught by any other instructor, I would have dropped the class at the begginning of the semester. excellent 100/100 Interesting subject. Thought provoking Awesome class! Insigtful, interesting and fun. I am so glad I took it. i liked the course and i would recommend it to my friends to take. 11 out of 10! This course went beyond my expectations and i recommend keeping this subject matter within the Universities curriculum. good teacher course kinda iffy good It's a good course to start thinking about the issues of the Pacific Rim once you know most of the facts. I really learned a lot in this course. I'm thankful to have had Miguel as a professor. I know more about the Pacific Basin countries than when I first stepped into the class. positive I enjoyed it and I recommended friends to take this course or any course from Miguel. I enjoyed this class very much. I learned a significant amount of history that I was not aware of. I also learned how to better form analytical opinions. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.

on some historical documents and materials, I wish he was a little bit more neutral or critical. more introduction to popular ideas, perspectives about controversial issues would be nice. -- snipped -- A little burdensome to cover all the history in one semester but the topics were good. Miguel is a Fantastic teacher. I was surprised by how much I liked this class because I thought it would be a boring American studies class with a lot of writing however I am happy to be wrong. I would take it again if I had to and I am telling all my friends to take Miguel's class. Great Class Miguel!!! none Great class. great He is amazing. one of the best instructors I have ever had. Miguel is a great instructor. He is very passionate about the topics and he does his research. He shares A LOT of information with all of his students that help us with our papers. Also funny guy. He is one of the best instructors I ever had at this institution. I would definitely recommend other students to take him. He is very well organized and well rounded. He really knows what he's talking about and you can tell he's very passionate, which makes this class more interesting. AWESOME! One of my favorite instructors so far at UH! He's smart and has a lot of information to share that's worth learning about! This instructor is great. He has done an excellent job in teaching this course. He is knowledgeable of the information and he explains it well. He is also available for help when it is needed and easy person to talk to. Good, intresting Miguel is the bomb. one of the best teachers that i have had. I never missed class because i wanted to come and learn everyday. Very easy to get involved in this class, instructor shows a great desire to get everyone involved. Great. He is a wonderful, approachable, and enthusiastic professor who is able to do things not many can- for one, he inspires his class into fierce discussion just based on his own passion for the material. The material from this course was extremely important- and, I think, necessary for all students to learn. I feel like I was able to gain a new understanding of the world around me, and I am glad to have taken this course, with this professor. Beyond excellent. His enthusiasm was infectious and inspiring.

engaging conversations and current course material applicable to the real world The use of debates as well as videos to further enhance our interpretations of the material being taught. I really liked watching the films and discussing them. The lectures, readings, and movies were all very interesting. the fact that I actually learned a lot, unlike many other classes at UH I liked the readings and the movies that connected to our readings. I also like that the class was small and you had good communication between teacher and students What I liked best is that I was able to gain and retain knowledge of information that I learned. If I did not take this course I would not be able to learn what I learned this semester. -movies -lectures The class discussions and debates were the most helpful to me. I thought that we learned a lot from hearing others speak about the topic through different perspectives. The students were actively involved and enthusiastic about the class. Group and class discussions. I liked reading about the stories which normally are not presented in news headlines and are more commonly swept under the rug though the general public knows its going on. the course layout was simple in respect to assignments and grading. discussion of what the articles were really getting at. as well as the big picture at the end. Discussions. I really enjoyed the class discussions. I loved watching the videos because they showed me a lot of things that was going on in the world that I was not aware of. It's different reading about, and seeing it happen. I liked the discussions because when we talked about our readings, it helped me to understand the material better. the wide variety of information and perspectives and the sequential introduction of information to help us gain a solid general understanding of globalism. Very interesting and enlightening Discussions and uses of various teaching methods to keep the subject matter interesting and thoughtful. Movies I liked everything because everything was new to me. Although the material is challenging, it was very interesting, and it's something everyone should learn. The articles and the required text were strong sources in making this course engaging and fun. I like the atmosphere and the invitations in to discussion that the instructor gave us, the students. I also like the amount of relevant and interesting information given to us.

35. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Writing the papers. I actually enjoyed this class throughout the whole time. I do not think I have anything bad to say about this course. Because I didn't always understand the material it made the papers much harder to write so those would have to be the aspect I liked the least nothing, it was a great course. N/A none, it was great The part that i didn't like was the essays but i guess since a writing intensive class you can't help that. Reading assignments every nights, most nights are fine but it might help to have "a night off." none it was all pretty good in my opinion. The readings were a bit too much. Some of the readings were long, but other than that, the class was great. I didn't like the readings as much because the were very wordy and difficult to understand. it was difficult to keep up with the reading but overall i was very happy with the course some of the readings were too long Reading Nothing. No complaints. Some of the readings were a little lengthy so it took a lot of time to finish it between my schedule.

36. My overall evaluation of this course is...

One of the best courses I have taken, so long as it is taught by this same teacher. This is a great course. I learned a lot about the topics and we got to work with our classmates for debates. AWESOME POSSOM :) I would recommend it to people that are already interested in globalization, the economy, or current events but not to people that don't really understand it. GREAT CLASS! This is a great class. I encourage others to take this course even though you are not an American Studies major. It opens up your eyes to things that you might not have learned and also it gives you another way to view events that happened, currently happening, and what is going to happen. Awesome! This class is awesome i would take it again next year if it wasn't a waste of credits to take it again Very good course This was a great course and even though I originally took it for the W credit, I feel that this course was very intellectually stimulating. this course was very insightful and it opened my mind to a lot of different issues i was not aware of. very good.. would definiltey recommend it.
