13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He was relatively reasonable about assignment submissions and the expectations for each. He provided a lot of material to work with for submissions and papers.
Very hands on even with online class
He is a great and knowledgeable teacher!
he was a great professor and is always readily available. the material was explained well and easy to understand and i learned a lot from him.
Great Professor, wish I had his class that was in person. However, he ran his online course well!
awesome professor even though it was an online course and we never met face to face. He was very helpful and responded to emails quickly. He also got you thinking critically about the readings and movies that were required, making you realize its greater meaning and opening your eyes to different perspectives.
Learned a lot about history and how we view them from our own perspective as well as the outside world. Instructor had the stamina and enthusiasm for the course subject which indeed influenced me as well to learn more about it each day regardless if it was an online course. Spent more time with this course than other courses mainly because I just couldn't stop reading and putting down my book! I enjoyed working on my weekly postings and instructor made me really put on my thinking cap and just freely write, write, write :) Would love to take any other courses this instructor will lecture on!

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked that we were able to speak freely on our Tuesday and Thursday posts and provide our own opinions, so long as they suited the appropriate topics and met the minimum word requirements.
Films
The subject, because I find it interesting. Also I love the films!
reading everyones posts on laulima and learning form their ideas and thoughts.
That it was easily accessible when I needed to be, exactly how an online course should be taught.
I like that although it was an online course, it was very organized (e.g. there was a set schedule). I appreciated the fact that there was no surprise assignments due especially since I had five other classes to worry about. The timeline of assignments due in the syllabus was so helpful even if I procrastinated anyways. It was still conveniently there.
Readings and short videos given by the instructor. It was very much enjoyable as well as educational at the same time!
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I wish that the topics and questions for our essays were less vague. I feel that if they had been a bit more specific and detailed, we may have had more to write about. I think it would have helped us to write better papers. I also wish we had until midnight to post our Tuesday and Thursday submissions since I work 6 days a week. The extra time would have been greatly appreciated.
A lot of reading
All the reading!!!
I think his grading is kind of rough.
The amount of reading was a lot but when you put the work behind it, it can be done.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The proper amount of challenge was provided for this online course. It was not made impossible to pass and the requirements were more than reasonable. I feel like I was able to take away new information and perspectives from this course.
Good teacher, tough subject
I loved the course it was very interesting!
It was great.
it was great! I feel like I learned a lot just through the readings we had to do. The weekly posts were also a great way for me to think more about what I just read and the why and how and who. Just about everything and anything I wouldn't normally think about if I had read it elsewhere.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Very knowledgeable of the subject. Enjoys what he does and believes what he teaches.
Great professor
very satisfied and replies in a timely fashion. Very knowledgable and would recommend professor to another student.
mr. Llora was very informative and prepared his material very well. he used a variety of learning techniques which allowed me to benefit as a visual learner. i learned new things and was able to apply my writing skills in my point of view. the approach to history was projected through an analytical prospective and i was inspired by it. my focus and curiosity kept the course interesting and lively. the opportunity to make up my missing assignments was awesome and genuine. i would like to say thank you for every thing that i have learned from the course. great teaching technique.
Overall, Dr. Llora is a great instructor. He quickly and directly addressed all of my concerns sent to him through email. Less than a 24 hour response sometimes within minutes even late at night. He understood my questions, concerns, requests, and answered all of them in a way that I found satisfying and informative. The course material introduced many new concepts to me, but Dr. Llora's assignments and directions made us realize and focus on the important issues. Many of the lessons learned in this class affect my daily life, such as my point of view of many different types of displays and places. I don't like Hotel street because of what I learned in this class. Dr. Llora's assignment made me realize why. I learned a lot more about World War II and how powers that be influence the museums and the stories they tell. Never take a story as pure truth. No matter the degree of authority that the story teller holds, take every story with a hint of suspicion. Realize who benefits from the information given and suspect that information about those beneficiaries may have been exaggerated or influenced by those beneficiaries. Dr. Llora asked the right questions and offered the right material for me to understand the concepts of those course. I would recommend this class taught by Dr. Llora to any of my friends. Also, Dr. Llora is a fair grader and understands the short comings of daily student lives and given an explanation will still forgive a certain degree of mistakes on the student's behalf.
Prof. Llora knows his materials and are very considerate to his students.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the reading material very much.
Interesting topics to write about and also looked at movies and other interesting articles that fascinated me.
It inspired "out of the box" thinking.
Reading the novel "Honor Killing" was so interesting. i couldn't put the book down every time i picked it up. it kept me on my feet and curious. i especially liked the posting of responses that were rather intriguing. Every student had a different perspective of the material and other assignments.
Reading about things I didn't know.
The course are base on self concept and creativity.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

Really long reading but hey that's why it's a writing intensive course.
I am a student that actually enjoys reading and has never had an issue with comprehension. This class has a lot of reading that was unnecessary and should be cut out. Some of the readings were just difficult to decipher anything useful from it. I felt like much of it was many pages of gibberish that added up to one point that could have been made much easier and clearer. At the start of the class I did not like that sometimes the book or readings would be referred to in instructions by the author, and other times by the title. This made it very difficult to follow along. Also, although the book we read may refer to white people as "haoles," unless quoted I felt that it was very inappropriate to use in an academic setting. From what I have learned about the use of this term in Hawaii, it is often used in the same way as one might use the term "nigger."
I have no negative response. everything was great.
Learning the truth behind things like Disney, American slavery, racism, honor killing. I never knew these things about America. America is the greatest nation in the world. How could it have these things?
none.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Well organized and taught out subject.
10/10. It's great.
I was very back and forth on this course. Some days I found the information to be very intriguing and others it felt like a waste of time. It just depended on what we were reading or watching during that specific week. Overall I would say it was a good online class, with a lot of eye-opening information, but wish I had had the opportunity to take it in a classroom.
This course was excellent. I enjoyed every bit of information that was presented in the course.
The course is good.
Will recommend to friend.

He is a great professor. He tries to encourage the students with positive vibe that he has.
Thank you!!! So much knowledge and perspective awareness!
Awesome professor ! I'm glad I took this class ! He is always open to discussions and very friendly and easy to talk to.
He was the best. I learned so much not just about events in history but how to really look at them from a different perspective
awesome teacher and source to knowledge I have not learn in the years I have been in college. Helps to expand your knowledge on issues from both past and present
He's a great teacher. Very laid back and easy to talk to. He challenges my way of thinking and urges all of his students to ask questions, especially difficult ones.
Great teacher. Learned all about film and history.
I really enjoyed this course. I always hated learning about history, but I I actually enjoyed this course, and learned a lot.

Discussions really help fully understand material
In-class discussion was interesting and engaging.
I liked how he made a team for 2 different debates. Through this debate, I think students learned how to think deeply, not only reading and memorizing the facts. In other word, it was able to learn think outside of a box.
The flexibility
He makes every class very interesting and educative. He encourages and support all the students.
I liked the class discussions because we got to hear different people's opinions and viewpoints on different subjects. I liked feeling like I could contribute to a lot of the discussions as well.
The fact that all opinions and discussion is welcomed and encouraged to help create a connection to the topic
The films aspect of the class.
I liked being able to think about what I thought about certain aspects of different topics. Having the ability to think and give my opinions makes learning much more interesting.

Excellent coarse
Intriguing. Easily one of my favorite courses I've taken in college.
This is a class that people can learn both about history and how to think critically and focusing more on the "what could other people can think about the same subject" kind of idea.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken at UH. Taught me how to think more critically.
Great course. I would highly recommend it to all my friends and classmates. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot more than I expected.
Loved it, would take another class taught by Miguel..
I'd definitely recommend it to others.

Killer work, Miguel! Wish you were staying at UH!
It was one of the most enjoyable and memorable class that I've took in UH Manoa.
You're the best Llora!
Try to organize the questions a little better to understand. That's all! Overall, one of the best AMST classes I have taken so far.
I was hesitant and afraid that this was going to be a brutal writing intensive and oral communication class, but it actually wasn't. I really enjoyed this course.

hes a great professor and knows how to keep the class interested. also, he teaches how history and everything can be applied to every day life.
that he is an excellent teacher. His lectures were always fun and interesting and he really opened up our minds to new thoughts and ideas by keeping us actively engaged in our learning. I usually hate writing assignments, but the topics he gave us allowed us to express our opinions and explore other possibilities. I enjoyed his passion and enthusiasm for teaching, which made coming to class a worthwhile experience. Miguel is a person who is easy to talk to and approach, in and out of class. He cares about each and every one of his students and tries his best to help us succeed. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone and everyone who is looking to fulfill their requirements or just wants an interesting elective to take.
Miguel consistently created an environment that all students wanted to participate in. Every day was new and exciting and filled with mind blowing conversations that helped me to grow as a student and a person. He is a teacher that I will remember forever.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Class was invigorating and increased my interests in the subjects taught in class.
I like the class how well organize and professor providing a lot of sources for reading and we could save more time instead to look up ourselves.
Class discussions on reading material and assignments
The debates, class discussions and allowing to write papers on what you thought fitted the subject area best.
I liked going out to other locations to learn. I really liked going out to the Arizona memorial.
Assignments weren't overbearing, but still required critical thinking. I think everyone had to think a lot when doing the assignments, but they were very manageable, which was an incentive to do the work!
The films that were being shown in class and how they relate to the units that were being covered that week.
Exploring many different aspects of history. Searching for deeper meaning in everything. Not letting the simple things go by without a critical thought.
I liked the class discussions. I also enjoyed the guest speaker's presentation.
The topics of discussion
The oral component being a debate and a presentation on the reading. I thought that that was a creative portion of the course and causes less anxiety than a regular speech course.
i like that the class was a lecture course, but it wasn't a jot notes all day course.
Each day was very interactive and fun making the class enjoyable and interesting.
Thinking critically and being able to have class discussions about the information because you got to hear other people's views.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
one time, we had to turn in the first quiz thing on the online forum. you forgot to tell us/ have us read about disney or something before the quiz was due. that was it, no biggie, i just used my own opinion.
The aspects i like the least was on the debate.

Not being able to watch complete films due to time.
I would say that some of the ideas were a challenge to grasp and it took me some extra time to get them. I had to email the professor a lot to get a better understanding but that's it.

Showing only portions of films. Too much talking, took time away from watching the actual film.
I felt like the JCCH visit might have not been necessary since all we did was watch a video and hear a short lecture in a room. The class during the academic year is probably more engaging, but as a summer course, it could have been done in the classroom.
the essays were rather critical, but they were also an important aspect as it summarized each lesson we went over.
I have zero complaints about the class.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
great course. enjoyed it very much
Overall evaluation of this course is amazing, i like how the course structure. Especially, i like how professor tell students to always ask questions and look things in a different way. To understand the situation we have now and in the past.
Great! Would definitely take more courses taught by Miguel.
Very interesting and fun, allows you to think outside of the box which many classes do not.
This is an excellent course taught by an excellent teacher.
Excellent. One of the best courses I have had. I learned an incredible amount, and the best part was that the class was fun.
Very great course, I wished I'd taken it over the regular semester though, as taking it over the summer feels like everything is moving too fast at times.
Great class, learned a lot, new appreciation for history, would highly recommend.
great. I would recommend this class to other students.
Fantastic, I would recommend it to anyone
Engaging and unique. I would highly recommend to peers.
excellent. i wish miguel taught more courses at uhm.
I would recommend this class and teacher to anyone. Miguel is highly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and challenges students to think in ways we have never before.
Great! I am now more interested in the subject and learned valuable information.

Thank you professor for making me "re-think"/critically analyze historical events. I felt it was very educational to re-visit past events with a critical eye and break it down; very different from what I'm used to (reading the textbook and memorizing dates and events). I've never given it any thought as to how historical events affect and shape our lives/identity today.
Keep up the great work.

Able to have the students do class discussion every week to see is we kept up with the work.
Excellent professor
This course was a very interesting course. I learned a lot and I enjoyed it. There were times when I felt the instructions were not clear and/or confusing. However, I think this could partially be due to the fact that it is an online course and there was no face to face communication. Still, Professor Llora was available to reach and more than willing to explain when asked for further explanation. He is very passionate about what he teaches and that is always inspiring.
Fantastic teacher, deeply knowledgeable, would love to be able to have discussions like this in a class instead of merely through email.
a wonderful source of information and inspires students to think critically but lacks some organization in the presentation of materials
A great and informative professor.
Super great. Very extremely good with communication. Very great about working with students. He is very good about not making his classes boring. He is an awesome teacher and I wish more teachers were like him.
He knows what he's teaching and I think he was good professor overall. I think he could've communicated the assignments better because sometimes the way the emails were written was confusing.
I think Miguel is a great teacher; knows what he is talking about and really is interested/passionate about what he knows. He really opens up the eye to learning more about museums and historical sites.
He is a very excellent professor because he has a perfect blend of seriousness mixed with whimsy in his personality.
He was great. He always kept a steady flow of information coming.
This course was focused on an interesting topic..... I think. I can't say for sure if the topic was interesting because, unfortunately, the concepts were so cerebral they didn't seem to follow any linear flow whatsoever. I wasn't sure when things were due because the instructor did not follow the syllabus. The class also had a Facebook page where the instructor would post anything and everything, I believe these were meant to be supplementary pieces of information or somehow relating to the week's topic, but they didn't relate and were just red herrings in attempting to decipher what the instructor wanted done. The instructor also required certain film be watched. However the links provided to the films didn't go anywhere, they weren't available for instant stream off Netfilx and, although some were on hold at the Manoa campus, this is an online course and it should be expected that there are students from other islands taking the course. The essay and response prompts were worded so terribly they were nearly impossible to understand. The entire course felt like a guessing game about what the instructor was attempting to convey. This question asks my evaluation of Miguel Llora. I don't know him so I don't have an evaluation, but this course was nothing but confusion and shots in the dark.

The movies.
I liked that it was an interesting online class
i think the option of going out to do an ethnographic study was the best part, simply because we could go out and experience what we have been learning.
I enjoyed the site visitation because it urged me to discover more about the world and its rich history.

Very organized and taught everything that should be taught.
Excellent course. Would recommend to anyone interested in Hawaii, WWII, and the Pacific
Well worth taking, make it a requirement for everyone
needs more organization
A great class for WI.
Interesting.
It was a great class and there was a lot of interesting information.
I think this course is great. I wish I could have been in a lecture class of Miguel's, though the online class was great too.
This is a fulfilling course because it makes you work hard, think critically, and teaches you to love history.
would enroll in a future class.
Not good. The subject is interesting, but the teaching was lacking.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He was very enthusiastic about the material which really made for some very interesting classes. It was great hearing about his travels which he often was able to relate back to the main topics of discussion.
He was always well prepared and engaged us in thought provoking lessons.
very good at keeping my attention. :) Very fun teacher that teaches us to question what we are told. Keep teaching and don't be so cynical! Just joking.
He is very intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. I would recommend his class to anyone and would take another class off his.
He is a teacher who truly wants to see his students progress and learn, no matter what that presentation may look like or entail. I believe he has painstakingly tailored his assignments to be relevant to current issues and the learning style of his students.
He is awesome and funny. Out of all seriousness, he has taught us how to keep our minds opened, being skeptical when studying history, learn how to think critically, and to be better in communication via various in-class discussions.
Excellent teacher. He was able to engage the class and make us think/analyze/form our own opinions on things.
Very good teacher. Passionate about the subject.
He is a great teacher who really cares about his students and their academic achievements.
My thoughts on Miguel Llora are that he is a very enthusiastic professor which in turn motivates me to learn and pay attention even at 7:30 in the morning. He makes class interesting and at the same time I gain so much knowledge on the subject of World War II, American history and much more. I recommend his class to everyone because he is that great. He really takes the time to get to know you. For instance, he offered to let my boyfriend come on one of the field trips because is a strong advocate for learning and although my boyfriend is not a student of his he understands that every student should have opportunities to learn.
...interesting
Miguel is a very good teacher. He opened up our minds much more than we had imagined. He is also very passionate about the subjects he's teaching.
Excellent professor.
Miguel showed in depth knowledge regarding this subject. He makes each class enjoyable and tries to stimulate in class discussions. He is a great professor and I would take any course he teaches again.
Extremely smart and passionate about the subject. Very funny and witty. A fantastic teacher, and also a great guy.
Awesome teacher!
Miguel Llora is a great professor. He is knowledge in his area of expertise and he keeps the classroom atmosphere lively and engaged at all times.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
It was really nice how the class was structured. As assignments, the students presented material to the class and then Miguel facilitated the discussions and went more in depth into the subjects. I really feel like I learned a lot.
I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the class where we could speak our minds and challenge traditional ways of thinking with our fellow students.
Reading on the Thalia Massie case and museum controversies.
The debates were a lot of fun and the movies shown in class.
I loved the class discussions. The reading were great, the presentations were good, the debates were a nice touch, but what really interested me, and what I looked forward to on a regular basis, was seeing how in class discussions would evolve, and reveal what my peer group things about these deep complex questions.
- There are too much to list here but I basically like everything that we have been doing throughout this semester, especially the trip to Pearl Harbor (it really opens my mind a lot). - Another thing I'd like to point out is there are no exams required and I really like that idea because it allows students to learn without being stressed out and as a student, I'd say that is the best way to educate us and to learn, rather than just filling in our brains with stuffs and materials, which we will eventually forget.
I liked everything! I think everything worked together.
I enjoyed all the in class discussions.
I'm not really one for debates but the debates that I participated in really helped me learn much more than the regular way of learning where the instructor lectures and then the students take an exam. And it was quite enjoyable too.
I enjoyed doing the debates in groups because I feel it helps stimulate our minds to think outside of the box. To make a statement we have to know what the other team will say as a rebuttal so it is good practice to be skeptical in that sense. We learn to be analytical and strategic even though we are arguing about the past it will help us deal with problems we may face in the near future. I also enjoyed the field trips because we go in to sites with a different perspective than we normally would as a normal visitor. Miguel had two field trips but unfortunately I was only to attend one otherwise I would gladly sacrifice my Saturday morning to learn. I went to Pearl Harbor memorial with the class and during that time I believe I learned more than the other times I visited combined. It didn't have to do with the fact we had to write a paper about the site as an assignment, I took the time to analyze everything because I wanted to and I think that was Miguel's objective to teach his students to see things through a different eye and he did.
The field trips and topic discussions
I liked the class discussions the best because Miguel is very entertaining.
The trip to Pearl Harbor was pretty cool. Also, learning to be critical of history was very interesting.
I really liked the in class discussions because it stimulates us into actually thinking out of the box. The debate was fun and working with people you're never worked with before was quite a challenge.
Miguel's lectures were very thought-provoking.
It was interesting each day. It was not boring and the class even seemed fun.
I enjoyed doing the weekly presentations as well as the debates.
learned a lot and teacher was awesome.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The 7:30am start time.
So much long readings!
I did not like the Laulima posts, I did not see the benefits of them. I preferred to hand in paper assignments.
I dislike writing assignments in general, but I needed a WI course so I'm glad it had many witting assignments, and given the fact this was a WI course I'm happy the writing assignments were there but...
- Having to wake up at 6:00 A.M. for the class =___=
Nothing.
The time.
I did not like the time that the class started.
There was nothing really that I disliked the class. I enjoyed everything to the papers, reflections, reading, presentations, and debates. The only thing I would have to say is that Miguel can sometimes goes off tangent and will let us out of class after the scheduled time and I had another class soon after that which led me to be late a few times. But other than that, this course is my favorite of this semester or even my college career so far.
The only thing I didn't like was the posts of important information to facebook. I don't have a facebook, therefore I missed some important information that should have been posted via laulima or myUH email.
Went off tangent a lot.
I did not like doing the power point presentations.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very good class. This was my second time taking a class from this instructor. Always interesting. I highly recommend his classes.
Excellent. I would highly recommend this course to my friends.
Very informative and entertaining. Variety of assignments given which kept the course entertaining.
It was very educational and not like every other class the university offers.
It was entirely not what I was expecting when I signed up for it. I don't think I'll be able to read a history text book the same way ever again.
I love this course and want to take any other courses that Miguel teaching also!
Awesome class. I learned so much in such a short amount of time.
I feel like I learned.
This was a very interesting course taught by a great professor and I'm glad that I took it. Just wished it was at another time.
This class is wonderful and I am sad that I am not taking his class anymore. I wish he teaches other course that I can take but since this fulfills three requirements there is no other reason to take his class. But if I had enough credits and had to take a class in order to be a full time student it would be one of his.
I'd recommend it
I really enjoyed this class, and I will recommend to others
great course
You learn a lot of things from this class and it teaches you to be an analytical audience when visiting museums and watching documentaries
Fantastic course.
I am really glad I took this class. I would recommend this class and this instructor!
AMST319 a great course that fulfills the writing intensive requirement as well as ethical/ oral requirements. Students are encouraged to be active participants in this class; the professor ensures that everyone gets a chance to voice their opinion on the topic being discussed. I challenge students who are normally quiet and not active in class to take this course. They will transform under the supervision of Miguel Llora.
10/10

Good luck in whatever you choose to tackle in the future! I know you'll do great!! Thanks for being an awesome teacher, I've learned so much from you. You really made me 'think' and I appreciate that.

Great course! I hope to have another class with you in the future! You are awesome!
Enjoyed his class a lot. He was very funny and gave clear expectations. Satisfied with what I learned from the class
Went off topic a bit too much.
It was okay
This class allowed me to take a more detailed look into how the internet permeates our lives. With this knowledge I'll be much more cautious as I surf the world wide web. Not only did it teach me specific knowledge I also got the general idea of how to conduct research at UH at Manoa (and how important it is to get IRB approval).
Miguel rocks!
This was a fun course and I really enjoyed learning about (and doing) research!
The course was more designed for research in humanities subjects. I enjoyed the course, but am a physical science major, so it was not as applicable to what I am studying.
This class really prepared me to write "official" research papers. However, the class constantly went into irrelevant tangents. He often shifted due dates, which became exceptionally annoying when he moved the research proposal due date up (apparently forgetting about the later date he had told the class). He is a very nice person, though.
The only class I had to look forward to this year.
Pfsr. Llora is a great teacher who is very knowledgeable concerning the conducting of research.
Miguel is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He makes a stressful class, nearly stress free, which made the class actually enjoyable. He was very understanding and easy to talk to about any problems that arose. He was always willing to meet with anyone that needed to meet with him. When I met with him it was always because I was stressed out over something and I always left stress free, with a clearer course of action to take and better defined requirements. If more teachers could be like him, I don't think University would be so stressful. The only bad thing I can say about Miguel is that he is leaving. :( He is a 10/10 teacher.

I particularly appreciated the links and available documentary films which worked very well in conjunction with the course readings. I doubt I would have been able to grasp and learn as much as I have about new concepts and information had both sources not been present in the course.
I appreciate the critical thinking Miguel pushed.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The workload?
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I would 100% recommend this course to my friends and acquaintances, I think that says it all.
Give him an "A" grade.
18. Other comments:
none.
Would like to see articles a little more current -- too much 1999 - 2003 dated things -- study of older empires like of Rome, England would be useful as well -- some of the videos way too biased -- painful to watch or simply boring -- HOWEVER some were fantastic -- really interesting -- bottom line -- this course let me start to think outside the box and move into a different level of understanding regarding what to look for -- all in all -- great course -- great directions from Llora.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Being able to have an open mind about topics discussed
I got a chance to explore the historic landscape of Hawaii that my father lived through.
I liked the order of it. It flowed nicely.
I liked the structure of the class. Well prepared
I like when he talks. His voice as well as his enthusiasm made learning and pay attention a lot easier
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Some readings did not include the topic
I'm not a very good public speaker, so the oral presentation was the most challenging aspect of the course.
Maybe be a bit more clear on assignments, was a little confusing
I did not like how he goes over class time. Although I like his class, I had work which made me be rushed
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Excellent course
One of the most enlightening history classes I've ever taken.
this course offers a high amount of information in a short amount of time. After taking the course, you will have a different mindset of history.
Great course due to a great teacher. Highly recommend

Great Class. Great Professor. I was glad that I took this class.
Very interesting course! After your revision of the prompts I found it easier to answer the questions you had. Field trips are amazing!!!!
One of the more compassionate professors on the subject of history and is very knowledgeable on course materials.
I really wish every person can take this class, you will learn how to appreciate life. Professor Llora, keep up the good work!
Very good class, it is taught in a way that I havn't seen done before. Llora is a great teacher.
Great great great great great great class. Content was intellectually stimulating, discussion was thought-provoking, and Llora really knows his stuff. He is an effective communicator and can truly engage a class. Loved the course material, loved the reading, loved the discussion, loved the films, loved the analysis, loved everything about the class. It has truly served to expand my knowledge, taught me how to think even more critically about historical issues, and sharpened my skill of analysis. Highly recommend!

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I really liked him as my professor. He went about teaching us the material in a very interesting way, which captured our attention. His class wasn't taught in the typical lecture and test style, but I feel like it was so much more effective in learning the history material. He was passionate and I would definitely recommend this class to others if he was the professor.
very motivating teacher but needs to explain cenceptas at a undergrad level
He is a strong professor that knows his material well to demonstrate to the class. He's style of teaching and knowledge has an impact on students to do more than just memorization of a subject, but rather a concept of critical thinking. He has a "great" sense of humor too.
A really good AMST Professor
Pretty good, gets sidetracked from students in the class talking nonsense when he tries to get through his plans for that class day.
Every survey question stated above is pretty much strongly agreeable, and is accurate in that it describes Miguel. There isn't really anything more I can add, other than having the pleasure to take this class.
Great teacher, challenges students on a daily basis.
great teacher, great personality. cares about all his students. highly recommend to everyone.
Fantastic. Miguel is a very educated and innovative teacher. While being in grad school, he still maintains effective delivery of the material for this class. He's easy going and very open to discussion and he's always there to provide help. Miguel is seriously like an encyclopedia for this class. He's very helpful with sources and research and especially on giving feedback to improve your work. :)
Miguel Llora is an amazing instructor and graduate candidate. Miguel's presentation of the material and its class interaction are one thing, but his genuine character and deep insight into the topics are just as valuable. He goes one step further in almost every aspect, especially in ways to engage the class in learning and providing an outlet for announcements and out-of-class material that is much more engaging and accessible than Laulima itself. While some of his insight may be slightly bias or lacking some backing, he is for the most part on point and his underlying point remains strong. Perhaps its due to being buried deep in the content and material for not only the class but for his own research that's introducing the slight possibility of tunnel vision, but it is in no way severe and if anything, just very slight on some points, the most I can verify due to my own studies are economic and some information-technology related matters. MIguel Llora is overall an excellent instructor and one of the best I've ever had at UH. I can speak that outside of class, many, if not all, of his students are continuously carrying on the in- class discussion outside of class not only on class material but for other applications and shows how our thinking has been changed and opened up. If there were one thing Miguel could improve on, it would be his impromptu-assigning of some assignments. It was not a frequent thing, but occasionally, say for example presentation evaluations, an evaluator would not be selected before hand until nearing the end of class, and it makes for some sticky not-on-paper-nor-clearly-assigned logistical work. While he provides a lot of content before class in preparation and out of class for further interest reading, his replies to emails could use some improvement. Short acknowledgement emails are OK but sometimes a reply is never received nor acknowledgement until in class and such. Again, it doesn't affect class that much, but in rare scenarios, these could end up creating some sticky situations.
absolutely wonderful. Miguel is so passionate about his work and teaching students, and it really shows. Everything he does in class has a meaningful purpose and engages students to critically consider different aspects of media and ways of thinking.
He is a teacher who loves what he is teaching. He embraces it and presents it to us in a way where we want to love it as well. He not only teaches it but gets us involved. Talking about it, visiting sites, and learning more. Making me want to read about our topics. He's understanding, knowledgeable, and extremely entertaining and funny. I've never once felt sleepy in his class. I would definitely recommend him as a professor that you must experience!
a good teacher. I would definately recommend him to my friends.
He is a passionate instructor who is not afraid to explain the lessons in detail. He allows the students to direct the direction of the lessons.
I liked that he was very funny and made the class very interesting. He always provided an opportunity for us to give our opinions in class. I liked the field trip, it was a nice opportunity to learn outside of the classroom.
really cool teacher. challenges students to think really really really hard
He's great!
Miguel is an excellent teacher and really knows his information and teaches us in an understandable way. There are sometimes confusing moments, but then he dumbs it down for us in simpler terms. He is passionate about the subject and provides us the opportunity to form our own opinions as we take in different angles on a topic.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really liked the professors style of teaching. The topics covered in this class was also very interesting. I also liked the smaller class size, which allowed us to get to know our classmates.
open discussion
I really enjoyed watching films that I have never heard of and finding interest in fictional historical films.
Getting to know there is more depth in American History than what we were taught
Open discussion
how we should see the events in the past.
The scheduled meeting at JCCH was inspiring and something I would definitely attend again. I liked learning about Honouliuli and I totally agree that it should be preserved for future generations to be able to learn from it. I also liked having the choice to pick which prompt I wanted to answer. :)
The deep insight offered into looking beyond the class content was amazing. It critically engages students into discussion in an open forum frequently and efficiently opens our minds to new ways of thinking, especially during short periods of time offered during the summer sessions. Miguel's constant search for new content and material keeps the class fresh and in some ways, never one term or semester is an exact 1:1 copy of another, which shows that the content and Miguel's methods are improving at every chance possible.
The debates!
I loved the fact that he lays out the history and events surrounding a certain topic before letting us write about. During class he would go over readings and throw us questions that really makes us reevaluate our own perspective.
The freedom to discuss and express idea.
The discussions were the best aspect of the course. However, I believe that it would have been more interesting to have taken the course during a regular session.
I appreciated that Miguel was flexible in deadlines. When it looked like we were not going to cover the information for our papers, he pushed the due date back to accommodate out schedules.
The part about disney and the part about film.
It was very thought provoking, I enjoyed the course.
I like going to site visits, like JCCH and would've liked to go to Arizona Memorial, and watching films from different perspectives. It gives me the opportunity to analyze and look at the different ways people approached filming our past. I also like the guest speakers that came in to give us more knowledge about the different topics.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
horrrible essay prompts
I dread writing papers.
None
Other students talking nonsense, unrelated stuff to the class.
None. Class is very manageable. And Miguel structures it that way.
Refer to the last review made of the instructor. Other than that, very little is not liked of the course. It's very fulfilling and reasonable with time, work load and the learning that is accomplished.
nothing
There's not any part of the class that I didn't find interesting or fun.
The time of the class.
The assignments were a bit confusing, especially some of the prompts for the essays.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I am really glad that I decided to take this class with Miguel as the instructor. I feel like I actually learned something from this class that I will actually remember.
easy but very complicated
Outstanding. Out of all my classes in the UH Manoa campus, this was one of the very few classes that I was able to interact with my classmates and my professor knew my name.
American History 319 is a good course to get a good look at American hidden history
A
Fun course.
one of the best!
Great :)
This course and the instructor are great, more so the instructor. If the course content were taught by another, it would certainly be a different experience all together, so aside from the curriculum being built or frameworked, the instructor and his methods were what made this class as valuable as it was.
If I could, I'd take it again. It was so much fun and I really enjoyed it. I think this may have been one of my favourite courses I've taken at Manoa.
It's an awesome class that really makes you think deep. In a society that revolves around the Internet and 'quick answers' this course really makes you stop and think and reflect on past and current events. It's definitely a course worth every single penny. I love it!
a must take class during college.
It was a great experience and a fun class. I would recommend this class to American Studies majors and other students that want to learn about analyzing how societies perceive history.
Great
Very good course.
I absolutely loved the class and I learned a lot about our past that I've never known before, like Iwo Jima and Bataan. I don't recall hearing about Bataan or anything in my classes before and I like that he touched upon these issues.

Hahahahahahahaha have a nice summer Miguel.
thank you for being awesome teacher through entire course.
Will definitely recommend to my friends. And I can see why this class is always full!!
"Is this legal?" An awesome block quote among many to take away from the class. Awesome instructor, great class, very worth while and fair in all aspects.
Thank you so much for an awesome class, Miguel! :D
Professor Llora is an a great man and it shows through the way he teaches and embraces our American history.
I kind of regret taking this class over the summer instead of during normal class sessions. It felt like a lot was cut out in order to fit the term.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Professor Llora is a great teacher who cares a lot about his students and makes sure that they take away everything from his class that he wants them to.
He is a very passionate teacher about the studies of the island. Very knowledgeable about the subject and even more of the other history of the island. Fun teacher, always for of energy.
An incredible teacher who has a great knowledge about what he is teaching and a great relationship with his students.
One of the best teachers I've ever had by making something I care nothing about into something I now have a strong appreciation for.
He is a very good teacher who would help you out in anyway; plus he does not make history boring what so ever.
Enthusiastic, not strict but wants students to engage.
Cool teacher, very good.
I really enjoyed his class and i recommend everyone to take any of his classes he teaches. He knows a lot about american studies and really enjoys what he does. Great Teacher and person!
A very enthusiastic teacher that understands the material taught in this course very well.
He is the best. So interesting and knows so much about the material.
Fabulous! Prof. Llora makes coming to class every week a breeze because of his entertaining class sessions. He made it definitely worth going to school and learning the material. I have gained valuable debating skills as well.
Miguel Llora was an awesome teacher. He made history fun and interesting, allowing us to think outside the box.
I think Professor Llora is very knowledgable in his study and definitely encourages students to participate and ask questions. He was funny and tried his best to relate to his students.
Great professor. Makes the course enjoyable and he is very knowledgable.
very good. he would be an excellent candidate for a full time position at the university of hawaii once he gets his doctorate.
He is a great teacher and just an all around fun guy. When he gets talking with a subject he finds interesting there's no stopping him.
Professor Llora was extremely enthusiastic about the material, and this allowed for constructive classroom interactions throughout the course.
He is extremely interested in the course content and the effective engagement of everyone involved in the class. He is excited about everything he presents and even the smallest connections made across content and concepts. Because of his enthusiasm in the material, the class seemed more interested and active in material than in other's I've experienced. Thank you!
He was awesome. Would recommend to anyone thinking about taking an AMST course.
Miguel is a very personable teacher and does a great job of making his students feel comfortable in class. At the beginning of the semester, he outlined what seemed to be a very stimulating course of study. However, I feel that Miguel spent a lot of time in class discussing things that were irrelevant to the course material. No doubt he was funny and kept the class interesting though. I just wish that we had stuck to the course syllabus more strictly to allow more time to learn more about Hawaii, Japan, and WWII. Miguel is always going to be a well-like professor, but I think it is important that he focus less on talking story with his students and more on teaching the course content.
Great teacher. Super enthusiastic and fair.
He was an awesome and very understanding teacher. He was very personable which made it easy to talk to him and also created a good learning environment
Great teacher who knows what he's talking about and he makes class enjoyable to attend
I think everybody should take a course with Professor Llora. He creates a learning environment that is fun, energetic and informative. He makes the curriculum interesting for students and is also very understanding.
he was a very interesting teacher and i had a lot of fun in his class as well as learning a lot.
Veyr interesting class. Made me critically think about the topic and world issues.
Very passionate about the subject, successfully engages student in discussion, presses them to think out of the box. Can ramble, when caught up in the current topic, may start new trains of thought/sentences without finishing the first one --> sometimes difficult to follow. Easy to approach, open minded, overall good instructor.
very good professor, one of my favorite classes this year.
Miguel is a great teacher and has strengthened my understanding of the world through an array of ways.
A professor filled with knowledge. He is kind, helpful and patient. He is a great teacher who understands his students and has a great sense of humor. He has taught me on how to view history in a different perspective that I never knew existed or never thought of.
he was a great teacher he enabled me to think of topics i would have normally never thought of my overall thought on public history has been forever changed
I think he was a great teacher, and had an abundance of knowledge on the subjects covered in class.
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He also has assigned many readings that are interesting and confronts the reader to be more critical.
Miguel is an excellent teacher who demonstrated extreme knowledge of the subject matter. He presented information in an easy to understand way and encouraged others to voice opinions and thoughts. The readings were mostly interesting, with some dry material necessary to transmit subject material. The use of various media helped to make the class more interesting and fun, and also engaged students. We not only took a look at readings, but also watched movies, documentaries, and read the occasional comic. A great teacher that I would recommend to anyone.
that he is an excellent teacher. To me, the topic of the class was not interesting at all-until I came to class on the first day and met Professor Miguel. He speaks with such knowledge and passion of the subject that it is contagious and hard to not follow along. He can clearly and effectively communicate to students in all ways to get them engaged to make the most of the lecture/learning experience. Professor Miguel is truly an outstanding educator who has an innate ability to teach and communicate, something that is not true for many educators.
Miguel is fun, caring, and makes history interesting. I enjoyed going to class and being able to hang out with him. I love the fact that he doesn't look down on his students. He treats us all as equals and he listens to each and everyone of us.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I particularly liked the content matter of the class in general. All of it was very interesting. The reading too was very interesting to read and it kept my attention. I also really appreciated the class field trip to Pearl Harbor, which gave us the chance to put into practice all of the concepts and skills that we had learned in the class up to that point.
I like how the course was very open for discussions and that we could speak our minds on the topic
The discussion about the different topics we studied.
Videos
Just learing the history from the past and comparing it to other events that happened.
Debates
interesting topics, rare to feel bored in class
The debates!
The feild trip was great really pulled the entire semester together and gave us something tangible to associate with the material we covered. I really liked how this course looked at history in a way that I have never looked at it before.
I like the films and alternative media to learn the subject matter.
Love love loved the debates. It's a great way for everyone to be involved in one topic and to fight for it.
I like that we had prompts and papers that stimulated the mind. It's easy to write about topics that we know about but he had a spin to most them. He made me second guess what I previously learned and had me question the validity and point in which the information being shared was coming from. I like the analysis and emphasis of different perspectives. It kept the class interesting and focused.
I like the fact that we were always engaged in discussion because it made the class a lot more comfortable.
the way we were able to think critically. the material we had learned all came together at the end which was fascinating.
When Miguel would just speak his mind I felt I learned a lot, and I also really enjoyed the field trip to Pearl Harbor. Learning by doing and experiencing is definitely better than learning by book.
The best aspect of the course was Professor Llora's lectures. They were interesting and made us analyze history from "multiple perspectives".
The expectation of critical thinking and making connections to current issues and concepts through in and out of class learning environments.
I liked how everything was broken down into weeks and there was always a reason for learning what we learned.
I really liked Honor Killing.
I liked the discussions a lot. I liked hearing what everyone had to say about the various topics.
I liked our debates and the class discussions that veered from the normal topics.
It was a flexible class but at the same time we learned a lot and covered a lot of material
I liked that the course was not a lecture format and it was directed by class discussion. I also liked the debates as well as the field trip to Pearl Harbor.
i really liked the books that we read. Also the debates and discussions that we had
Class lecture/discussion.
class discussions
i enjoyed class because miguel is a fantastic teacher!
Although it was a little nerve-racking, I enjoyed the class debates. I liked working with my group and how we all came together to try to be persuasive. I also liked the trip we took to Pearl Harbor as a class. The class discussions were also very interesting.
i enjoyed the books and readings we had to do they were interesting i also enjoyed the field trip
All of them, but I have to say the second debate was my favorite.
I liked the discussions about the readings and about the subject matter that we were going over in class. I also liked the way that the class was conducted and they way that the professor was trying to get the students to think critical about the subject matter and the readings.
I liked the fieldtrips that he planned the most. Although the trip to the Japanese Cultural Center fell through, we were able to visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial as a class. It was the first time in my college career that a teacher organized learning outside the classroom, and it was, I think, very successful. More teachers should organize fieldtrips to augment learning in the classroom.
The lectures! Attending class lectures were fun and engaging. He really gets me thinking and those neurons in my brain firing. I liked the field trip we went on, even though it was during the weekend. A great alternative learning method not employed by any professors. The way the conversation of the topic in class always seems to flow so seamlessly is an indication of how well he knows his stuff and to what degree the students are engaged. Also, using the Facebook as a group for the class was very helpful in keeping up to date with the information.
I liked the class period. I liked everything about it. It was a class where you could express your own opinion. You wouldn't be judged for what you say or do. You wouldn't be poorly graded for not agreeing I with Miguel.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I liked everything.
NOTHING
Can't think of any that stand out, maybe all the reading.
Writing papers
Just learning aspects of history that are boring/.
student presentations
N/A
Nothing. I enjoyed every aspect
I fully enjoyed every day I had this class. As much as the professor attemepted to instigate conversation many of the students did not participate very much in class disscussions. I would have enjoyed it if my peers decided to speak more during class.
I liked the debate the least but that's only because I get nervous talking in front of class.
Sometimes the reading...But who likes reading required texts.
-- snipped --
Didn't like the essays but they were always relevant. Just not to big on critical essays personally.
the debates and the way in which teams were rewarded or punished.
Probably the reading assignments, in particular the extra long readings. Sometimes I felt that the readings would often repeat itself chapter to chapter.
none
I enjoyed the course and the set-up, but there was one field trip that fell through due to scheduling and communication misunderstandings. More out-of-class experiences would have solidified the materials we discussed.
None
Time wasted at the beginning of class. Debates were rigged! I knew it haha
I liked everything
I honestly can't complain about anything. It was a great course.
none i like it all
The amount of reading.
-- snipped --
none
The thing that I liked the least was reading a lot of articles.
nothing i enjoyed the class
I'm not a very big fan of public speaking, so I would have to say that all the oral assignments were my least favorite aspect of the course. However, it is a requirement for graduation, and in no way did it take anything away from the class.
-- snipped --
nothing. It was fun. It was one of those classes where time actually flies because you're having fun.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This is by far one of the best classes that I have taken at UH thus far. I would recommend it to everyone I know.
I came into the class honestly just looking for a grade but was interested in the topic. I quickly found out that it wasn't going to be an easy grade but one that would be one that would have me think outside the box. I really enjoyed coming to class and the materials were great. Even though it is only one semester I learned a lot more about Hawaii and the transformation it took when the Americans came here
An exellent class that I highly recommend.
Positive. Highly recommended
this course is a very good course if you want to challenge yourself and learn something from the pass.
Would recommend to others. Not difficult but not boring.
very good.
I had a great time and learned a lot!
This course was great. very different than any class i have ever had. would rcomend it to everyone.
I loved this class. Prof. so interesting and will talk with you any time. You can tell he likes teaching. Would gladly take another class from him and he gave me a unique perspective on subject matter.
Excellent! Highly recommend to any of my classmates to take this course, whether required or not. My roommate is taking this class from Prof. Llora in the summer because of me!
I would recommend other students to take this course.
It was time well spent and really stimulated the mind. I have yet to see a professor stimulate my mind like he had. Again, his emphasis about perspective and the way in which we remember history was amazing. I think that will stick and follow.
Excellent course. I recommend for the WI fulfillment.
A+

Great class. Learned more in this class than in any other of my history classes combined.
Positive! More courses at the University should incorporate field trips to bring the materials learned in class to a tangible sense that will resonate with students as with our trip to Pearl Harbor's Arizona Memorial.
This is a very interesting course and I would recommend it to anyone, especially if Miguel is teaching it.
Fun. It was a good glimpse into Hawaii throughout its history. I wish I had learned more though.
I enyoyed this course and am glad I took it. Very stimulating.
I loved the course and if I could take the course again I would
I'm pretty happy that I took this course. I initially thought it was going to be boring, but as we got into the curriculum I found it to be very "stimulating" (in my brain, sicko). I learned a lot throughout the semester. I highly recommended it to all my friends.
its a great course. take it if you can with him
Great for students in the field and for students who are testing the waters or just taking the course to fulfill a graduation requirement. Not a breeze, but not hardcore, either. Fair.
very good, wouldnt change anything
exceeded my expectations of the creative means on which the material would be covered. I enjoyed learning in this class everyday.
It is a great course that students should take. I would recommend it to everyone. I always enjoyed going to this class. It is a class you would never fall asleep in. Miguel is also very informative and knows a great about history and movies. I learned a lot more in this class than some of my other required classes.
it is a great course and i would recommend the class to anyone
I would recommend this course to any student at UH, although the course title is a bit misleading, I think it should be called Introduction to Commemoration.
Very good. I would suggest other students to take this course from this professor more if they are thinking of taking this class. I would also suggest this course taught by this professor if they seem interested in the subject matter covered in this course.
This class is not only excellent, but is the only class that I've found to fulfill an ethics, oral communications, and upper level writing intensive requirements, all in one class.
one of the best university classes I have ever taken run and one of the most excellent professors you could find. THe fact that I came into the class with negative thoughts about it due to my lack of interest in the class topic only for Professor Miguel to turn a 180 degree on it and teach it so well for me to really like it. That ability is rare. I took the class only for the oral credit and got much more than I expected. I am glad I did stay in the class and not drop it.
Yay! :) It was one of the best classes I have had at UH. If I could take him again, I would. I'm glad I did and I'm glad that it also fulfilled my requirements. I can talk to Miguel about anything and I loved it. I wasn't scared of him. I didn't feel belittled. he taught me a lot about history and theres so many things that I learned from this class that I would've never learned if I was in any other class. This semester was jammed packed with a lot of information. Thank you!

18. Other comments:
In terms of constructive criticism, I felt that the reward for the winning team of the second debate was way too generous. Due to the fact that the final paper involved a good deal of work and thought, I felt that either everyone should have had to do it, or everyone should have been exempted.
Was a great teacher and always looked forward towards his class.
You're doing great Miguel, don't change a thing
instructor made a lot of references to sports and pop culture that I did not understand

Great class with an awesome teacher!
Enjoyable and I would recommend to fellow classmates.
Thumbs up!
I think Miguel definitely makes the class and without him it probably wouldn't be that great.
This class was a requirement, but I'd rather look at it as an elective. I enjoyed the content and experiences more than any other "required for graduation" class I've taken in my Manoa career. Thank you!
Thank you for all the second chances and for being so lenient throughout the semester. It would have been extremely fair if you didn't grade my last two papers, but you did anyway and I can't thank you enough. Especially since I haven't been the best student. Thanks for making my last semester in college memorable. See you around chief!
Really great teacher.
Thank you Professor Miguel and keep up the great work, Edmund

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
The lectures Miguel held were extremely informative and allowed students to think critically from multiple perspectives. The class was challenging in a sense in which enabled me to analyze rather than absorb everything I read or see.
Miguel Llora is an excellent professor. Going against traditional textbook interpretations of history, Llora really made our class use critical thinking to question the interpretation of history today. Using debates, class discussion, and papers students were able to really immerse themselves in the history of WWII. Llora is a compassionate, enthusiastic, intelligent professor who clearly wants to pull something out of each and every student to inspire critical thinking. A fantastic professor.
He's a great teacher that really feels strongly about his subject matter. Though the class is considered a writing intensive, the way he splits his assignments doesn't even feel like that. I would gladly take another class from him in the future.
Great Professor, with a lot of insight on life from past and present. Does not bore students, but helps them think outside the box.Llora is very insightful, mellow, and funny. Makes class worth going to, and the only class i look forward in attending.
He is well prepared, and is very excited about the subject matter. He tries to make it interesting and is personable.
He knows his stuff and is one of the best professors I have ever had.
A very intelligent professor.
very knowledgeable of the subject. His teaching methods are awesome because he makes it very understandable for everyone
Miguel is awesome and inspiring - in both his knowledge and personality. Would recommend his classes to anyone! A+!
very effective & entertaining teacher. passionate about topic materials & students' learning
Passionate, excited, knowledgable, humorous.
effective teacher. critical thinker. great at encouraging discussion. great guy.
He was a great and enthusiastic professor that made coming to each class fun and informative. I really learned a lot! I'm glad that I was fortunate to take this course with him. He provided amazing insights that really helped me understand and learn the material.
great professor, really enjoyed coming to class. He's really passionate about what he's talking about and it has it's affect on the class. Provides a laid back environment where it's easy to talk infront of the class, as well as asking any questions.
He is unique and teaches in an eye-opening way, makes us really think critically
Great teacher, clearly enjoys what he teaches. All classes are interesting. One of the few classes I looked forward to attending weekly. Fair and would always help students and give extra time if needed.
he is a really good teacher! He's very knowledgeable in the subject area he's teaching, and makes class fun. The structure of his class was easy to follow, and he was always willing to accommodate with our needs and what we had to do for other classes. He really wanted us to succeed in everything we did, including the other classes we were taking and that helped out a lot!
Excellent!
Mr. Llora is a wonderful teacher! It is very apparent that he feels passionately about World War II and how we remember the event. And his open and easy going personality makes me feel more inclined to participate in class discussions.
Great teacher who cares about his students success.
He is very passionate about the topic and is passionate about sharing his knowledge with his students.
He did a great job in teaching the course but the name of the class should be changed as it is very misleading the class is not solely about america Hawaii and WWII but rather about public history and museum ethics as seen through America Hawaii and WWII. Also it is hard to discern what Migs wanted from the students in his assignments. his prompts were often long-winded and left me confused as to what he actually wanted from me. also the lack of a grading rubric for assignments lead to this confuse as wesl (how can I give you what you want if I don't know what that is).
The most enthusiastic and effective teacher I've had at UH.
good teacher, engaging and good discussions
Very fun and interesting person.
He is fantastic. He knows his material well and really pushed us to become critical thinkers. He also made us comfortable with him and our classmates very early into the semester.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The films were extremely helpful in understanding of the course materials. As an American studies class covering upon America, Hawaii and WWII, the films served as efficient visual aids to stimulate interest. The field trip to USS Arizona Memorial was very memorable.
I loved the debates we had to do library research for. I found myself enjoying doing the research for the debate, gathering with my team to plan it as well as the debates themselves which carried out to be completely professional and thought provoking. Class with Llora is a pleasure in general, so just attending class was enjoyable for me.
The class discussions were really open and inclusive, it helped solidify the class as one cohesive unit.
I liked that he integrated readings and videos that related to WWII or to topic. I think many people either underappreciate this class or take it for granted, but i really learned a lot. We watched cartoons that helped me see the other side of the story. This class really made me stop and think about the society we live in.
I liked that we looked at the many bias' of history, because many times it is taught in just one perspective. We are rarely taught to be critical.
Going on the fieldtrip, just talking to him and feeling his knowledge on the subject
The films were very much related to the subject. His choice of films and video clips were perfect to whatever we discussed in class
The writing, the examinations of films, the readings, the debate, the field trip, etc.
the debate
The aspects of the course that I like the best was looking at different perspectives. Miguel helped us see many perspectives of social history.
I liked all aspects of the course.
I liked that the class was more of an open-discussion style. The movies, readings, and the field trip really allowed us (the students) to not only learn history but to engage in what is being presented thus becoming keen public historians.
The different topics that we discussed in class. If not for this class, I would not have been exposed to so many interesting topics and this class taught me to never look at history the same again. Especially enjoyed the field trip of Pearl Harbor Memorial, not having been their in over 10 years it was a moving experience to go back.
abstract thinking, oral discussions and papers to better explain our knowledge and interpretations instead of multiple choice tests, we weren't just regurgitating information
Class interaction and critical analysis of subjects. Learning multiple perspectives.
I enjoyed attending the field trip to Pearl Harbor. I also liked the fact that he gave us options on what we could do for our final paper. He made life a lot more easier for me just because I had three other classes that I really needed to do well in.
I liked the field trip to Arizona Memorial and that he let us choose from a variety of options for our final paper. I especially liked the "applied" side to public history such as volunteering at 'Iolani Palace.
The readings were interesting, if long and difficult.
I loved that he was very understanding when we had trouble with a paper and gave those who scored low to make it up.
Learning about pearl harbor and hiroshima
We covered many different topics, and I particularly enjoyed the sections directly related to Hawaii and WWII. I also enjoyed the fact that different students presented each week and summarized what that week's topic was.
Learning how to think about what we learn, rather than learn.
movies and readings matching up, field trip was good
Films.
The ethical section was the most stimulating, but I also really enjoyed the overall discussion about commemoration.
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
N/A. I enjoyed every bits of this class.
Every now and then it is easy to get a little off topic, but if things get too out of hand Llora is there to get things back on track. I honestly can't think of anything other then that.
The in-class presentations were very informative, but left almost no time to really discuss it as we were busy trying to clarify the information.
Best class i have taken in American Studies.
Even though many of the movies we had to watch were helpful to be more critical about history, they were also really depressing. I would recommend to other students to take another class that is "on a lighter note," right after this class.
Writing papers, yet it has to be done (its a WI course)

Didn't really care for the debate, but it was a good change of pace from the everyday assignments.
maybe more background knowledge of world war II...i didn't have that entering the class so it was hard to interpret things without the base of knowledge, but maybe i should have had that before taking the course
Some of the material wasnt as interesting as others.
I'm not much of a fan when it comes to learning about history, so at times it became pretty boring for me. Also debates aren't exactly one of my most favorite things to do, but we had to do it in order to fulfill the ethics focus of the class.
I have no complaints.
Class discussions were always fun and interesting.
-- snipped --
The beginning of the course started off a little slow.
Lots of random tangents, but your stories are very fun to hear.
students using lap tops to shop or look at facebook in class
Papers.
Colonial Williamsburg was the worst aspect because it was boring. However, in retrospect, I think it was necessary and a good topic to kick off class with.

18. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The class was one of the most informative course I have taken in university. Unlike some other professors, Miguel made himself available to communicate with the students, answered questions regarding classworks or simply the material covered that day. Efficient communication created the class environment very pleasing and approachable.
I would recommend this course to anyone who is tired of learning history through the same tired method. Llora makes history interactive, thought provoking, and personal. He is an intelligent, funny, and enthusiastic man who clearly wants his students to walk away with new ideals about the interpretation of history. Through debates, papers, and even a field trip to Pearl Harbor it is clear that by the end of this class you will walk away with so much more knowledge than you had before. I loved this course.
Excellent, such a dense amount of information that never really weighed you down.
Deep and meaningful. There should be another part to this class, that Miguel Llora can teach.
5 stars
awesome. It's modern and it can be related today.
I loved it and would give it the highest review!
great course & teacher. Improved my critical thinking & working in groups (debate team)
I would take all of Miguel's classes because he teaches with excitement and passion. You can tell that he loves what he does. What a breath of fresh air. Mahalo nui loa e Kumu Miguel!!!
a gateway to realizing that other persperctives surrounding historical events exist
It was a great course. I think a course like this is fundamental to a university education in which, it helps us to become worldly scholars. It prompted us to engage in the world around us and think about how it could be different.
great course, would highly recommend it to other students. Really enjoyed coming to class.
great! he set up the class in a manageable but challenging and organized way
Great course, I would recommend it to anybody.
for a class that fulfills oral, writing intensive, and ethics it was a lot easier than I expected. I think it depends a lot on the teacher teaching it, but overall I really enjoyed taking this class!
Excellent and highly recommended to other students!
Amazing! Mr. Llora's class has encouraged me to think more critically about thinking!
The course was fun, it helped to make learning about museums exciting. I definitely enjoyed the movies as well as the debate.
It was an interesting course, and the instructor really helped to give the students a good understanding of public history.
Outstanding!
good subject, student presentations were interesting
Very fun.
My favorite class, EVER!
19. Other comments:
It's a blessing that UH Manoa has a professor like Miguel. I would like to go further with the knowledge I had obtained from this class, and also look forward to taking his class again in the future.
Hope to work with you again in the future!
Im sad because I wont have Porf. Miguel Llora next semester. But I will keep in touch. Thank you Miguel for a great semester
Miguel is a good instructor overall, and explains things thoroughly.
great class. highly recommended!
I loved this class. The fact that the professor really cared about all of his student's success really changed my opinion about professors at this university. I think he represented the faculty well and I think more of them should be like him.
Great teacher even though he is still a grad student, should continue doing so since he is really good at it and because their are so few truly great teachers here at UH manoa

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Outstanding.
He is a very passionate and compelling professor who is not only insightful and very knowledgeable, but fun to have class with.
Did a great job of keeping our attention in class! Really funny and really knowledgeable!
He is a very knowledgeable professor. He really knows what he is talking about and clearly explains everything that he knows.
He is the most amazing and brilliant instructor that I have ever taken at UH Manoa. He encourage his students to learn especially about history and our past. Taking his class really helped me a lot to broaden my horizon and have a better grasp about our country's history of the past with different countries. Keep up the good work and thank you for everything.
He is awesome! He's very passionate about what he teaches and he is genuinely interested about the well being of his students. Very easy to talk to and always makes himself available.
He is very knowledgeable and cares for his students. I enjoyed taking a class from him and would recommend him to other students.
I am 34 and have had many professors. Many other courses have had more information or "knowledge" necessary for the course, but I've never had a course or teacher who has caused so much thought on the topic. He and this course challenged me greatly and in a good way!
One of my favorite instructors/professors at UH! He is very interesting, approachable, supportive, and knowledgable. He is also flexible and communicates well with the students.
Very knowledgeable and very approachable, he taught the class with enthusiasm and motivated the class to think outside the box.
a wonderful instructor and really encouraged the class to think about real world topics. Very enthusiastic and knowledgable about the topics.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
kicking back and watching the other half of the class debate.
I liked the way we spent in-class time the most. Lectures, discussions, debates, etc.
No midterms, final.
Just talking about interesting subjects throughout history. It helped me gain understanding in perspectives and helped me to think critically.
Watching war films, field trip, reading necessary and important articles and writing different types of essays.
I loved that he didn't bombard the class with too much, so we were able to thoroughly go through all topics and do well on assignments.
His enthusiasm and knowledge about the topics presented.
I really liked that we watched many films in this class, which connected very well with the course material. The articles were also interesting, and together with the films, I feel that I was able to understand the material better. It is also a great learning experience to go to the field trip to the Arizona Memorial.
Learning to look at situation in history from different points of view.
Friendly environment made it easy to pay attention, give input and overall learn.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
-- snipped --
The only thing that I can honestly say that I didn't like was having to do writing assignments, but this is merely my own personal aversion since I've been out of the academic essay writing game for a while now, and sometimes I have a hard time with it.
Readings were quite long and bland.

The prompts for the assignments for this course were more open-ended than I was used to, which made the assignments difficult, especially the papers. However, the open-endedness helped me to think more independently and, overall, made me a better student.
There was a lot of reading.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
very good and well planned.
AMST319 is an exceptional course that would be beneficial for anyone who is interested in better understanding the world in which we live.
Excellent. Highly recommended for anyone trying to fulfill these requirements.
The course itself allows students to think critically and outside of the box. I thought this was a unique way to present these skills by talking about museums, commemoration and perspectives.
I definitely recommend this class to all of the students who are willing to learn about the past and history.
Awesome! I learned a lot and I'll be able to apply it to my other classes.
fun course good for learning about Hawaii while we are here
Good. I learned a lot and enjoyed this course.
EXCELLENT!!! AWESOME!!!
This was a great course, and I would recommend it to all students.
Very educational and enriching.
Excellant class.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Professor Llora is a great teacher and mentor. He was passionate about the material and inspired us to become better at being critical thinkers. He is by far one of the best professors and teachers that I have had in college. I was so fortunate to be in his class!!!
Very knowledgable and passionate about the content of the class. Lecture was always interesting and I learned so much.
...he's one of my favorite members of the American Studies department. I hope he becomes a professor at UH afterwards.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
One of the things I liked the best was that it was well organized. I make this my first point because so many classes are not. In addition, I liked how he engaged the entire class in the conversations and encouraged everyone to express their feelings. He was respectful of all opinions even though some had opinions that were different than his. I also liked how he gave us choices when it came to our assignments as we were working on such controversial subjects and the range of topics impacted us all in such different ways. Some students really challenged him but he maintained extreme professionalism. It was obvious that he enjoyed his job and it wasn't a 9-5 ordeal.
I enjoyed class discussions.
Miguel's lectures were amazing. I learned so much. Also, the videos--he made us watch the most amazing and interesting videos.
the field trip to Pearl harbor and watching clips in class. Also the course is only 10 weeks so its great!
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
That it had to come to an end. I wish Professor Llora taught more classes.
non
The timing. It was too late for my liking, but it was worth it.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
A++, on a scale of 1-10....This class was a 20
Fantastic learning experience. I would highly recommend this course and the professor to others
...anyone who's even remotely interested in WWII should take this course. It's worth it.
this course is a great course. It offers a wealth of information about the second world war.
18. Other comments:
Professor Llora showed genuine and sincere concern for the class as a whole and as individuals. He challenged us and truly brought out things in us that we never realized were there. He taught us about American Studies but he went above and beyond by inviting us to seminars, and encouraged us to explore the possibilities of having a degree in American Studies. He also went out of his way to coordinate a trip to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. I couldn't make it, but it was something that he did and I give him credit for doing it. It was such a complete and fulfilling experience.
Good course, and i think i like it.

11. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
It was an exciting, energetic, postmodern class that challenged us from the outset to reevaluate our basic assumptions and develop a self-aware, critical eye with which to engage products of cultural production. We inherited a sophisticated methodological toolbox from Prof Llora's ingenious triangulation of Morris-Suzuki, Rosenstone and Bailey & Farber's work. All theory was rerouted to specific stories that generated historical awareness about the War in the Pacific and forced us to become co-conspirators in the craft of doing, making and seeing history. We acquired a sense of Public History by engaging in the act of doing it and learning to question the assumptions of the discipline that contain.
he ROCKS!! AWESOME professor!
knowledgeable and high responsibility instructor
Excellent. He was always available for help or clarification, he was enormously knowledgeable about the subject matter, and he was enthusiastic about what he was presenting. I learned so much in this course.
miguel is an instructor i would enjoy another class with, his ideas are fresh and make you think.
I had not really had a teacher like this before, it was really interesting to learn about something from someone with a defferent teaching style. I really enjoyed learning from him, and how involved in the class he was, that was pretty cool.
The best class I've ever had. Well-organized and Dr. Llora made me thank a lot.
Very knowledgeable about class content and enthused about learning. He responded to students posts and was very thorough with comments. Some assignments were unclear...I didn't always know what was expected.
Professor Llora is very passionate about the course. He also knows a lot of information! He replies to e-mails very quickly which is good because the course is online and that is the major form of communication. Very nice man. Never met in person but via e-mail very respectful and fair. Also, I really respect Professor Miguel for being "accountable" for his actions. There was a incident of miscommunication over a e-mail and Miguel honor his word and apologized for the confusion. Many professors are "tight" and are NOT accountable for there wrong doings. However, sometimes Professor Llora does not clearly state the assignment which makes it very frustrating.
Good. Stimulates the students to look at events from a different perspective.
he is an encouraging and supportive instructor. Professor Llora is passionate about the course's subject matter which helps get students like myself more interested in the class. He is prompt in answering any questions or concerns that come up. His course is very thought provoking and interesting. I would recommend this course very highly.
Miguel is knowledgeable about the course material and welcomed discussion. He is also very easy to communicate with, which is a vital component for an online course.
Miguel's class was awesome to say the least. Great content/resources and many things to learn. Perfectly paced. Very interesting! Thanks

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The discussions! The enthusiasm of our instructor; the insightful texts he choose for the course; and the power of everyone's analysis of the cultural artifacts we examined. Everyone's engagement with the issues transpired at a graduate level. And it was solely because Prof Llora had the power to captivate us as he brought his subject to life (with special fx!)
The materials were great! The movies were interesting and made it a lot of fun to relate it to our discussions and readings.
This class is very challenging, and requires thinking outside the box, which Prof. Llora greatly encouraged. I learned to look at history in an entirely different way, and was taught to investigate what is presented as factual discourse a little more carefully. Prof. Llora is obviously passionate about his filed of discipline, and I feel lucky that I took this class. I hope to meet him one day on person and thank him for his influence on my further studies.
i liked the posts it gave me an idea of what other people are thinking. granted this was an online class and it was his way of getting us together but often in campus classes the students don't talk, don't contribute, this maybe the way to do it.
I liked all the readings and the different videos that we watched and then looking at how they applied to the course, that was fun.
This is an Online course and Dr. Llora is always thinking about the convenience of students in mind. Especially the student who hook up into the Internet abroad like me.
I liked his response to papers....how he graded and made comments. I could tell he read every written response, post, and assignment.
I like the weekly discussions on laulima. It was fun to read other class mates post (ideas, comments, thoughts).
I liked the videos the best. Miguel related the videos to the material covered in the class well.
I personally enjoyed viewing the films and discussing them after
the class discussions were very engaging and acted as a constant feedback to the material learned.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The course could be improved by better coordinating use of Laulima with teacher-student interaction. The architecture of the exchange can be engineered a bit more precisely by establishing points of presence, either through scheduled live chat periods or scheduled presence on a forum. From my experience with online courses this term, that is the essential component missing from the class: Presence. Because of the asynchronous nature of these courses, people can feel disconnected because the interaction is a passive and a one way circuit and feedback is delayed. Asynchronous interaction is fine but its nice to fully synchronize sometimes too.
Just that it was online and I like hearing Miguel lecture in person.
I honestly cannot think of anything. I loved the online format which allowed me to do the work at a steady pace but on my own time, I liked the interactions, the materials, and the videos.
the post deadlines, but who likes deadlines, right?
It was a lot of reading, not that it was bad reading, just a lot of it.
The announcement of assignment. I'd like Dr.Llora to make it simple. I mean the direction and instruction. Sometimes I didn't know what to do next.
Lots and lots of reading, viewing of film, and writing. I think this should have been a WI (writing intensive) course.
-- snipped --
If anything the readings. Sometimes the readings were a bit much.
The weekly class discussion posts became a bit redundant and boring after awhile. In the future, maybe he could implement different activities.
nothing. perfect coarse jus would be best with a light school load

A+. I would highly recommend this course and Prof Llora's future courses to anyone who has a semblance of interest in history and American studies.
i loved the class but i like our last book best, actually i love it, may even keep it. and our 1st book least.
I enjoyed this course very much. It made me look at history in a different way than I had before.
I don't know how much I owe Dr.Llora, a lot. He gave me a lot: Knowledge, chance to stretch my imagination, and so on. This is the best.
It was a good course. I liked the content, but it sure was a lot to cover.
Awesome course! I am usually not a fan of history but this class was fun.
Good course. Thought provocative.
Great course.
excellent
16. Other comments:
I am eager to follow Prof Llora's work. He has inspired me with a love of this subject. I am eternally grateful to the time and energy he placed into this class and into each on of his students.
You should use Skype, either as lectures or some discussion time. You could record it and put it in resources for those who couldn't attend the designated class time to skype.
I actually will miss the dialogue and presentation of new ideas at the commencement of this semester. I am very appreciative for the new ideas, paradigms, and modes of thinking which I have gleaned from this course. Thank you!

This was a very enjoyable class and I really enjoyed it very much
Thank you. I'd really appreciate it. I have not read all of the materials you suggested, but I will continue to study this area. I hope I will have an opportunity to talk to and ask some questions Dr. Llora about this area in the near future.
Prof. Llora is a kind teacher, positive, and encouraging. Thank you!
To future students, take this course. Teacher was easy to get a long with. He was helpful when the material seemed confusing. Also allows enough time to get the assignments done.
awesome

Great instructor who is very passionate about his work and the material that he teaches.
Great class. A lot of fun to attend and I learned a lot.
Wonderful professor! I wish that there were more teachers like him on campus!
excellent. Miguel Llora is very passionate about American Studies and is constantly motivating students to think critically and outside of the box. Any student interested in studying the United States should definitely consider taking Professor Llora.
My overall evaluation of Prof. Llora is that he is real enthusiastic and brings huge energy to his lectures, but I thought that sometimes he sounded a little too strong on his ideans or opinions. He has lots of knowledge about the subject also but felt like people are hesitatant to counter against his argument because it sounded too strong.
He is a good instructor and is enthusiastic about the subject. Prompts for papers could be more clear.
He is a great professor! I would definitely take any other courses he offers.
Enthusiastic about reading material and lecture format. I liked the out of class lecture hall assignments.

He encourages students to freely express their opinions and to be critical. Good at provoking interest and curiousity.
Miguel Llora is a wonderful instructor and has great knowledge. He not only mad the class fun and interesting but impacting and intellectual. I was able to learn a lot from him and would recommend any of his classes to anyone and have been actually. He urged each student to always do their best and when he felt that the best wasn't met would really push to get a little more. He inspired great critical thinking in his lectures and discussions and forced all of us to do the same.
very good teacher. i enjoyed going to class and he always answered back to emails as soon as possible. very helpful.
He is a great teacher. But maybe try another approach to get students to do the readings and participate in discussions, perhaps a couple homework questions attached to each reading or short periods at the beginning of class when groups of 2-3 students could share with each other instead of with the whole class.
Miguel has a great way of connecting with his students.. Really enjoyed the class!
a very engaging teacher. I like that he connects current events smoothly with the past of various countries. Excellent references and examples from various books too.
The class was not an easy one, but Miguel helped me understand the topics by his way of teaching, such as videos, books, lectures and presenters.
great teacher however course material was dry.. powerpoint presentations went by too fast/too much writing
very positive
that I enjoyed his class, learned alot about the pacific basin. He knows his material, very laid back and easy to talk to.
He was always well-prepared for class and returned our papers promptly. His discussions always left me debating the "right" answer.
Miguel Llora it the type of teacher that makes you excited to come to class and learn and discuss the topics we went over in class. I learned so much and I was very pleased with this course as well as the teacher.
very good teacher

A great professor, very enthusiastic about the course, and knowledgeable. Easy to relate to. Would take a class if he taught it.
excellent. Llora's teaching style is more about teaching students the knowledge with strong critical thought without putting all of the focus on a grade. I feel many times the grading factor or standard makes people lose sight of what learning is all about, learning. American Education today has become a commodity, which the school puts more emphasis on money than teaching the students. This is a very sad fact, but there are still very few teachers out there who actually want to help students rather then let them fail while the school takes their money.
Excellent professor. I really learned a lot and this class changed my perception about the Pacific Basin countries.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The movies were very interesting.
Learning more detail about some subject I already knew about.
I really enjoyed the incorporation of film into the course. It was not only relevant to the articles we were reading, they were helpful themselves as well. I've noticed that a lot of films classes show do the first part, but not always the second.
The aspect of this particular course that i found the best is the in class discussion held after reading the assigned books. The discussions allowed students to give their opinions about the subject matter while creating an atmosphere that allowed all students to express their thoughts freely.
The films
I loved not having exams. Reaction papers are a fantastic alternate to exams. You need to know the material for exams and papers but papers allow you to express your feelings about the topic and not simply regurgitate facts.
Review media
I enjoyed how Miguel was able to relate current situations happening around the world to the information provided in class. How strongly he kept involved in todays situations.
It was good that it pretty much covered everything in the Pacific basin, and by topics. Writing was fun, in terms of reflecting my thoughts to the readings and films. A lot of new things that I learned...
The videos chosen to fit with different sections. They were interesting videos that many of us had not seen. Class discussions were always interesting and very well constructed and put together. I actually liked the presentation of this class because it allowed for us to go about on our own and really review a article of our choice the way we wanted. He made us aware of outside of class events and lectures going on that he felt were interesting and pertained to class, which they always were.
i liked some of the readings and videos. they were interesting and i learned alot more about the history of thepacific basin.
It wasn't just a history class. It was a history-and-its-impact-on-the-present class. Concepts were tied together, we didn't just skip from one historical event to the next because they were important. We explored why each event was important, and how and why they happened.
Incorporating everything together
I liked the fact that the topics discussed in the semester correlated with each, which made it interesting. It was like connecting the dots.
lectures, movies
I enjoyed watching films that related to the course. Very interesting, Good way to interpret what he is teaching.
The class discussion was definitely the most interesting, because our class was so opinionated and diverse.
I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of this course.
the movies that were not documentaries and the reaction papers
The use of film to explore topics further. Film is a great tool and helps me understand much more than reading.
The assignments made me think critically at the issue at hand.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

writting the papers.

The lectures
The 20 and more page readings were not my favorite but were tolerable.
Nothing
nothing beyond the typical work that students do not enjoy but are expected to preform.
Lots of readings... but it was fine. learned that much.
Nothing. I liked everything about this class. Sure some of the readings were a little long at times, but they were interesting. Class was well put together and wonderful.
none.
I wish there were more discussions, but it is hard to force people into talking. It is difficult to build into a discussion when its only one or two people participating.

nothing
Well there was not much that i did not like.
Really? None.
I liked that movies were incorporated alongside the reading.
None.
difficult course material
lectures
Lengthy readings.
The reaction papers. Some of them I had a hard time grasping what the main idea was about. As I progressed in the semester, I got used to how to write and format the reaction papers.

15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This was a very interesting course, I think if it was taught by any other instructor, I would have dropped the class at the begginning of the semester.
Great course and I would recommend to someone else to take it
11 out of 10! I would take it again and recommend it to others!
excellent. This course went beyond my expectations and i recommend keeping this subject matter within the Universities curriculum.
Interesting subject. Thought provoking
Fantastic!
Interesting course material and engaging classroom discussion.
Great class, I look foward to taking more American study courses from professor Llora.
I think about the first half was more interesting. Probably because I'm not that interested in modern history, but still the former part seemed more organized. Overall, it was quite stimulating and fun, and I learned new perspectives.
Awesome class! Insigtful, interesting and fun. I am so glad I took it.
i liked the course and i would recommend it to my friends to take.
I enjoyed the course.
excellent 100/100
good teacher course kinda iffy
positive
It's a good course to start thinking about the issues of the Pacific Rim once you know most of the facts.
I enjoyed this class very much. I learned a significant amount of history that I was not aware of. I also learned how to better form analytical opinions. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
good
I enjoyed it and I recommended friends to take this course or any course from Miguel.
I really learned a lot in this course. I'm thankful to have had Miguel as a professor. I know more about the Pacific Basin countries than when I first stepped into the class.
16. Other comments:
Great class. Enjoyed every aspect of the course and would definitely take it again if given the chance.
on some historical documents and materials, I wish he was a little bit more neutral or critical. more introduction to popular ideas, perspectives about controversial issues would be nice.

A little burdensome to cover all the history in one semester but the topics were good.
Miguel is a Fantastic teacher. I was surprised by how much I liked this class because I thought it would be a boring American studies class with a lot of writing however I am happy to be wrong. I would take it again if I had to and I am telling all my friends to take Miguel's class. Great Class Miguel!!!

Very easy to get involved in this class, instructor shows a great desire to get everyone involved.
This instructor is great. He has done an excellent job in teaching this course. He is knowledgeable of the information and he explains it well. He is also available for help when it is needed and easy person to talk to.
Miguel is a great instructor. He is very passionate about the topics and he does his research. He shares A LOT of information with all of his students that help us with our papers. Also funny guy.

Good, intresting
He really knows what he's talking about and you can tell he's very passionate, which makes this class more interesting.
AWESOME! One of my favorite instructors so far at UH! He's smart and has a lot of information to share that's worth learning about!
great
i am grateful to have taken this course from such a great professor who truly cares about his students. i appreciate your openness to adjust the schedule according to student needs.
He is one of the best instructors I ever had at this institution. I would definitely recommend other students to take him. He is very well organized and well rounded.
He is a wonderful, approachable, and enthusiastic professor who is able to do things not many can- for one, he inspires his class into fierce discussion just based on his own passion for the material. The material from this course was extremely important- and, I think, necessary for all students to learn. I feel like I was able to gain a new understanding of the world around me, and I am glad to have taken this course, with this professor.
Great instructor! Would take another course by this instructor if was being offered!
He was very informative and easy to talk to. He helped me understand the main concepts of the class and he was very enthusiastic about what he was teaching.
Beyond excellent. His enthusiasm was infectious and inspiring.
i would definitly recomend this class to other students
Great teacher. One of the best I have had at manoa. Focuses on very interesting material and does his best to present both sides of the argument. Will listen to students critiques about the readings and assignments and is very accommodating.

34. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The class discussions and debates were the most helpful to me. I thought that we learned a lot from hearing others speak about the topic through different perspectives. The students were actively involved and enthusiastic about the class.
discussion of what the articles were really getting at. as well as the big picture at the end.
The use of debates as well as videos to further enhance our interpretations of the material being taught.
Group and class discussions.
What I liked best is that I was able to gain and retain knowledge of information that I learned. If I did not take this course I would not be able to learn what I learned this semester.
I really liked watching the films and discussing them.
I liked reading about the stories which normally are not presented in news headlines and are more commonly swept under the rug though the general public knows its going on.
-movies -lectures
the fact that I actually learned a lot, unlike many other classes at UH
I liked the readings and the movies that connected to our readings. I also like that the class was small and you had good communication between teacher and students
engaging conversations and current course material applicable to the real world
the course layout was simple in respect to assignments and grading.
The lectures, readings, and movies were all very interesting.
I liked everything because everything was new to me. Although the material is challenging, it was very interesting, and it's something everyone should learn. The articles and the required text were strong sources in making this course engaging and fun.
I loved watching the videos because they showed me a lot of things that was going on in the world that I was not aware of. It's different reading about, and seeing it happen.
I liked the discussions because when we talked about our readings, it helped me to understand the material better.
I like the atmosphere and the invitations in to discussion that the instructor gave us, the students. I also like the amount of relevant and interesting information given to us.
the wide variety of information and perspectives and the sequential introduction of information to help us gain a solid general understanding of globalism. Very interesting and enlightening
Discussions and uses of various teaching methods to keep the subject matter interesting and thoughtful.
Discussions.
Movies
I really enjoyed the class discussions.
35. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The part that i didn't like was the essays but i guess since a writing intensive class you can't help that.
it was all pretty good in my opinion.
Reading assignments every nights, most nights are fine but it might help to have "a night off."
N/A
Writing the papers.
none, it was great
Because I didn't always understand the material it made the papers much harder to write so those would have to be the aspect I liked the least
nothing, it was a great course.
none
I actually enjoyed this class throughout the whole time. I do not think I have anything bad to say about this course.
Nothing. No complaints.
Some of the readings were long, but other than that, the class was great.
I didn't like the readings as much because the were very wordy and difficult to understand.
Some of the readings were a little lengthy so it took a lot of time to finish it between my schedule.
it was difficult to keep up with the reading but overall i was very happy with the course
some of the readings were too long
Reading
The readings were a bit too much.
36. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This class is awesome i would take it again next year if it wasn't a waste of credits to take it again
very good.. would definiltey recommend it.
One of the best courses I have taken, so long as it is taught by this same teacher.
Very good course
This is a great class. I encourage others to take this course even though you are not an American Studies major. It opens up your eyes to things that you might not have learned and also it gives you another way to view events that happened, currently happening, and what is going to happen.
This is a great course. I learned a lot about the topics and we got to work with our classmates for debates.
This was a great course and even though I originally took it for the W credit, I feel that this course was very intellectually stimulating.
Awesome!
I would recommend it to people that are already interested in globalization, the economy, or current events but not to people that don't really understand it.
GREAT CLASS!
this course was very insightful and it opened my mind to a lot of different issues i was not aware of.
AWESOME POSSOM :)
A great, informative course, with material that is rare to come by, and valuable, nonetheless. I was enlightened by the discussions as I gained a lot of knowledge that I had previously not known before. Strongly recommended as the information it provides is imperative for one's grasp of the world around them.
Great class. Would take again!
I enjoyed the class as long as it was taught by Llora because he was very helpful. Overall, I feel that I've learned a lot of important issues.
Beyond excellent and beyond my expectations.
positive. The teacher did a great job and is very passionate about his subject
Excellent course and teacher
Great

It's a good course, I'd take it again.
I learned a lot of things from this class that I had not known before. It was a very informative course.
