10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
open and flexible environment, taking students' learning needs into account
The presenting of different theories in regards to real life situations were very valuable. I learned that every clients is different and they are very critical in the way we treated them. Having guest speaker that talks about expressive arts was a great new learning. We as individual and helping clients can learn from expressing our thoughts and feelings in arts.
I enjoyed the class as a whole, particularly the books that we read. I learned practice skills that I feel have broadened my skills when working with clients. This experience will help me to practice in my own island.
There were several valuable aspects of this course that promoted a very positive learning environment. For one, the instructor checked in with students periodically and communicated any changes in the outline of the syllabus. Secondly, the Professors genuine care for her students fostered a deep respect from her students. Her mentoring and thoughtfulness help to bond the cohort in a way that was very profound and spiritual. Third, the topics chosen, reading materials, and guest speakers were very relevant to the topics of this course (which is not always the case in other courses). Overall it was a excellent course in which I learned some very valuable tools for my future career as a Social Worker.
The books were very insightful and I enjoyed the discussions.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
openness and willing to be flexible in modifying course structure to students' needs. professional advice and guidance.
Dr. Lana Ka'Opua was willing to listen and learn from us students. She respects us as an individual. She also love to hear our feed backs on activities and how to improve them. She is willing to work with us students and what will benefit us the most. She is understanding of our situations and willing to work things out.
She see's me as a whole being and not as a student. She values my feelings, my thoughts, my words and I appreciate her for that. She doesn't teach as if she were an authority figure, but as also as a learner. She's extremely helpful and mindful to us.
She was very open and willing to help her students in any way she could.
Dr.Lana exemplies professionalism that is infused with an abundance of compassion and wisdom. Her dedication and commitment to teaching and being teachable herself lends itself that every class session added food for thought that will be continued into life experiences for all those in the cohort. Dr.Lana has a gift of intution that would guide the topic of discussion to be expressed by those students that needed to share in a safe and honest atmosphere. Each class was if we all were in a canoe, somedays paddling hard and others laughing in unison as we ALL rode the wave of life together. Dr.Lana never deviated from her steerswoman position, but was definitely one of us.
I am glad you made time for us to check in and debrief almost every session. It shows that you care about us and focus on our health and well-being.

The test - seemed to be a disconnect there
Majority of the class were formulated around many guest speakers; in the end, as enjoyable as they were and reflecting back at my time in the class, I wish they were more class time with professor to discuss content and text book. I'm walking away from the class still unsure as to what Health Social Work can be; we reflected a lot on individual practicum sites and as useful as it was; I feel as if I'm still missing the larger picture of Health SW. I felt that the class was continuously being reminded of petty agreements that would benefit class rapport however, some of the standards the students were held to I feel were not respected in the same right for our professor (i.e: side talking, cell phone, acknowledgement of potential offensive comments). I think it would have been fine had it not been such an issue in class of the many reminders and emails that went out to prohibit such hurt feelings of the students; however, the class was fueled in such a way that discussions and comments were filtered on my end because of the potential issues that it would bring for certain classmates. Our class was so small that comments made about how one student is unhappy or feels threatened were made obvious as to which student both professor and (offended) student were speaking about. One or two reminders was fine but not every class session. Lastly, I feel that second semester I really didn't learn as much in comparison with the first semester. Projects/tests/assignments focused more on individual feeling than content. As beneficial as it was, I don't know if its just nerves because the program is ending and I'm nervous, or if I'm really prepared and only post graduation will tell. Besides all being said; the class was enjoyable, the content learned was relative, and the professor did show strengths of a professional while in the classroom. Her knowledge of the course and its content is evident and her desire to want to help the students is commendable. I enjoyed her use of indigenous learning and practice because I feel many other classes lack her desire and her knowledge about working with populations most prevalent in Hawaii. Her knowledge and her course correlates very well with the MBT SSW's mission statement.
Dr. Ka`Opua exemplifies the best UH MBT SSW has to offer. She challenged me as well as the class to step outside of our comfort zone, as did she. Dr. Ka`Opua had the best interests of the class in mind and went to great efforts to accomodate the learning desires of her students. To be able to do this for a classroom of diverse learners with varied interests must not have been an easy feat. At the onset of the health concentration in August, it was apparent that students leaned towards a macro level practice, however the type of macro practice varied from NGO to administrative. I commend her efforts and admire her tenacity to meet the expectations of all students. There has been a lot of criticism of Dr. Ka`Opua, mainly individuals stating there is a perceived lack of focus or clarity (as I understand it). I don't think this is the fault so much of Dr. Ka`Opua, but, of the school of social work. The curriculum, I believe has not provided the foundation for students interested in macro practice, so that the concentration lacks in course content. Social justice advocacy is at the heart of social work, and in my humble opinion this is not promoted in the curriculum as much as I would like to see. As the school of social work heads towards indigenization of it's curriculum, so too must its faculty in terms of discussion of colonisation/decolonisation and how social justice issues are manifest as a result. Dr. Ka`Opua has provided the opportunity for those conversation to begin, and has done so with warmth, empathy and genuiness.
It sometimes appeared that the professor had "favorites" and was more interested in some students, than others.
This course definitely had potential, but it fell short of its expectations. First, the textbook was really not utilized during the course's entirety, which can be a good and bad thing. Good because the text book was incredibly boring and kind of irrelevant, and bad because we had to spend a small fortune on something that we did not really need. Secondly, There were too many times in class where we spent too much time talking about subject matter that really had no place in our curriculum, like class agreements and feelings etc. I feel that we are all adult learners and things like respecting other people should not have to be reiterated over and over again like we are little children. I understand the instructors want for this to be a cohesive cohort and an environment that is is conducive to learning, but how are we supposed to be learning when all we do is sit around talking about irrelevant things, and not get to the important, substantive things? Third, I really feel like the instructor made a valiant effort to make like she was "listening" to the classes needs, but was not really hearing us. When we talked about reducing the amount of guest speakers, that went unheard, and i think that was really detrimental to our learning because everything else seemed rushed, like trying to cover course content or assignments, just so that we could accomodate our guests. Don't get me wrong, I feel that we can learn a lot from people who are out in the field, but I would have liked more time to cover material, work on the health fair and capstone. Whereas now, in the last few weeks, we are struggling to finish all of our assignments and rushing to make deadlines.
Lana Ka'Opua is a great social work role model and teacher. I would recommend this class to all students with interests in the health field.
#19 - This class had two students who were disrespectful to the instructor and were often rude to the instructor. They displayed a feeling of anger and resentment and were not engaged in the classroom. This was a constant distraction and my learning was disrupted with this type of behavior. As social workers, these students are not professional and should have been counseled about their behavior in class. Their behavior became more and more bizarre as the semester wore on and the last two class periods were a torture for me!
