13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Mari Yoshihara has done a stellar job teaching this course. I've taken courses like this in the past and have not learned half of the researching techniques I've learned in this course. It has really been a pleasure taking this class.
A very knowledgeable and very well versed in the subject matter that she teaches. Can't wait for next semester!
Amazing! Love her, one of my favorite professors hands down. She is very knowledgeable, personable, and always helpful.
Mari was an excellent professor that was very knowledgeable and you can tell she is extremely excited about her job and research. She was very enthusiastic and encouraged us students to be thrilled about the works we were reading and the research we will do ourselves. She was there for help the whole way through and she strategically formed the class so that room for procrastination was very thin. She was easy to approach and incredibly helpful. For me especially she went above and beyond what I expected a Professor would do in order to help me with my research topic. Overall, Mari was a great Professor that seems to care and knows how to teach the academic skill of research very well.
good teacher, enthusiastic & helpful with our papers/projects
My overall evaluation for Prof. Mari is that she is very enthusiastic of her work and trying to share that feeling with her students. She is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to outside of class time. However, I think she does not quite understand students that don't share that same passion for scholarly research. Other than that, she's pretty good as a teacher.
She was very enthusiastic! At times, I thought she was very good at giving feedback. However, at other times I thought there was a bit more she could have commented on. Overall I thought her feedback was encouraging.
she is a teacher who cares about each student and each person's work; she helps students to the best of her ability. She is very knowledgeable in re: research and writing theses.
Very knowledgable. Willing to help at anytime.
Dr. Yoshihara was a great help in the whole process of researching our thesis. She makes time to meet us which is of great help because this is a time where we can address any concerns. I can tell that she knows a lot about doing research and about where we can find different resources relevant to our topic. This is of great help.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really enjoyed the library visits.
Discussion and her ability to teach with passion.
The readings were tough, but worth it. If you can understand how to read scholarly material, you can read anything. They are skillfully selected (to show a range of research topics, frameworks, and methods) and the exercise that accompanied them was very useful for approaching any kind of reading you will have to do.
I liked the one on one meetings with Mari. That really helped to steer the direction of our projects and was a useful tool in keeping the untrained grad mind on course. The meeting period gave Mari an opportunity to help us directly.
learning about different research methods
I liked the idea of having a semester with a Prof.'s help in researching for our final capstone project. It makes the overall writing experience less daunting.
I liked the fact that we had a lot of freedom in choosing our topics. I also liked having the time to work on our personal projects. Learning how to use microfilms, the rare archives, and the Hawaii section of the library was great!
I thought the analysis of the readings, although somewhat tedious sometimes, was helpful. The workshops at the library were also extremely helpful in introducing me to resources I did not know existed.
Class Discussion. Free time to work on projects.
I liked that she started off the course by getting us to see what the topic or argument in a reading was. This seemed tedious before, but I found it to be greatly helpful when I had to start formulating a topic, an argument, primary and secondary sources, etc. But the thing that I liked best was that all assignments were clear and well organized. I liked that each assignment had one focus, so that made it less daunting because I think if we had to tackle all aspects of the proposal at once it would have been really worrisome. I also liked that the teacher gave us time off from class to work on assignments, especially since some of the places we needed to do research are only open during the week and many of us have other classes and work as well. I also liked that she made time to meet with us after each assignment to tell us what we need to do next, what we need to fix and just to help us along the way.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The amount of time needed to do research, even in this time and place with are vast ability to gain the knowledge needed.
None.
I liked everything about the course.
I did not like how fast we had to get through some of the readings and write up such critical responses. I understand and can see how they are applicable to the class and molding students into critical thinkers/reviewers/writers but it was a little challenging trying to find time management with all of the other classes that I was taking.
Reading all those long articles. They were informational but they were a bit much.
There is not much I did not like but a suggestion I have is perhaps breaking up some of the assignments (write ups: findings and proposal) into parts or drafts before submitting the entire essay so we can identify early on whether we're going in the right direction or need to change something. This way, we're not still in the major editing/change stage after our only submission of findings but that we can be confident that the final (of several if this idea is implemented) submission of findings can be used as material for our theses.

Just seemed like there was not enough time to finish everything.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I very intense, well organized, and extremely educational course that I highly recommend for the college experience. Incredible teacher.
Excellent! I feel extremely lucky to have Professor Yoshihara advising my senior thesis. The course was well designed, and I enjoyed it immensely.
The course wes really well designed and configured. I felt everything we did was a setup for a skill we would use later on in our research. Nothing felt like a waste of time. The course was challenging enough to push the limits of analytical and research skills, but easy enough to retain and use the skills at a later time.
good
This course, even though it is required for AMST majors, is a must for anyone looking to go into the field of scholarly work/research. You really learn a lot in being able to construct a very good research paper.
Overall, I think it needs to be organized a little bit more, focusing on the research section more.
it is very helpful and well-organized, with a reasonable timeline dedicated to help students do their very best.
good.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Mari is a great professor. She helps me learn a lot from the course. She has high standards for us but is always accessible and friendly. She put a lot of time, effort, and money to help us with writing workshop. I always feel grateful that I can have a professor like her!
that she is an excellent professor. She is very precise and explicit with her explanations about the material. She is very encouraging of discussion as well. I really appreciated her discussions that went beyond the course content especially about the realities of grad school.
Professor Yoshihara is a great professor--she's enthusiastic about her field and her students, but sometimes I feel as though she doesn't always do the best job of trying to understand the ideas her students express. There have been times in class where two different students will express the same idea but she reacts to the students as if the had said different things. It can be a little discouraging for a student to continue trying to participate in class discussions--the majority of the class time-- when the student feels as though it would be best to be quiet because speaking up only ends up being an awkward moment.
great. Her instructions were fascinating and clear.
she is a professor who is very passionate about American Studies and about the books we have read in class. She is very knowledgable as well. The context she would provide for each text was helpful, although it often seemed that it was minimal and necessary for our understanding of the text. Mari is great at responding to students' concerns quickly and is available to meet with outside of class.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Classroom discussion and Mari's faciliting questions.
I liked comparing the authors to one another during discussion the best. This really helped me see how certain books speak to each other and how I can related books to one another in the future.
Hearing the different ideas of my classmates.
Her instruction about the books we read or historiography of American Studies.
I liked many of the texts we read in this class, and I liked the class discussions as well.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
A few of the "classics" at the beginning of the course were difficult to get through (such as Nash). Perhaps a little more context before reading would help a little. As an introduction to historiography, it took me a while to get my bearing on the focus of the course.
Getting through such dense books every week was extremely difficult and definitely not something I am used to doing. That being said, that's what grad school in AMST is supposed to be like.
Too many book reviews... it makes sense to have that as an assignment, but I wanted to have more instructions about how to write a good review before being assigned the works.
Sometimes it seemed like discussion could have been more focused or more guided. More concrete questions or exercises could have helped our class get to deeper understanding of the text. It was also challenging to keep up with the reading towards the end of the semester, as three additional books were required for the final paper. Some of the texts were challenging to get through, but must have been necessary to gain a basic foundation in American Studies
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I learned a lot from the course. Class discussion always helped me clarify points that I had difficulty understanding. I really like the questions she asked about each book. Those questions are thought-provoking and very helpful. I also like most of the books Mari chose for us as reading materials
that it was very helpful. It was interesting to learn the historiography of the field as well as learning what historiography is and looks like. However, I would have liked to have spent a bit more time talking about what is American Studies today.
As a required course for the graduate program, it is a good one. Professor Yoshihara picked a variety of books, some easier to read than others--but she admits that not all of the books she assigns are equally as great as the others. The books showed the range of ways research is conducted in the field of American Studies and was really helpful.
It was helpful to understand many of the basics of American Studies. At times, I wondered if our discussions were as in-depth as they "should be" at the graduate level.
wished for a more critical discussion on American Studies methodology and historiography and depth; at times did not feel student-centered; contexts were generally topical; at times discussions were difficult to dive into, could have been effective to discuss strategies and methods of close reading and framing arguments to hold the students more accountable and to be guided through the process; wished for more feedback on writing; I appreciated casual discussions on grad school/professional development very useful in opening up the space to be able to ask questions, appreciated honesty and openness in this regard.
18. Other comments:
Great class. I'm really glad this is a required class. I feel significantly more confident about how to approach (or explore) my own research interests now that I've taken this course.
It would be helpful to have more exercises in this class that connect to the sorts of writing necessary in academia. Also, if the course could have built into it workshops to help us gain the skills necessary to help us in our field, it would be very helpful.

Good teacher. Knows a lot about women's studies.
Passionate about the subject matter...made herself accessible to students outside of the classroom for extra help.
Good. I wish her study guides were more specific.
good. She knows the material.
Personally I truly enjoyed this class, I know from some of answers above I may be critical of the course but I am not. I thought the professor was engaging, enthusiastic about the course material, and fostered a great learning environment. I think the most frustrating part of this course was the lack of participation from my other classmates, many would not show up, many would simply play on their laptops, and not be respectful. This was upsetting for me to watch because I wanted to be involved in class discussions, in the readings, etc. I guess it is difficult to engage everyone but the professor did everything she could and I did enjoy this class very much.
A great teacher that really wants to educate her students. There are never any questions that go unanswered.
Very knowledgeable on subject, lectures were very comprehensive.

Yoshihara was a very strict grader when it came to papers or the final, but wasn't very specific on how to fulfill the requirements to receive an A. But she did offer re-writes, which ended up saving my grade. And for that, I was very grateful.

Films, and disscussions
The panel discussion and some of the videos.
Thoroughly enjoyed the panel discussions with the guest speakers. Brought the words to life!
Discussion, videos, panel discussion also a chance to re-do tests and papers to increase score.
Courtship and group discussions. We should sit in a circle to encourage that.
Guest Speakers Videos Yusuke's power points
The film choices
She was very modern.
The Discussion panels were highly interesting.
I liked watching the different movies. I know many think movies are fun and you don't really have to pay attention. However, she specifically picked movies that reinforced the norms and the history that we were learning in class. The films were very relevent.
Her enthusiasm of the material and her videos and guest speakers really helped keep the class fun
I liked the movies. Well except for the abortion one. They helped make things real.
21. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
That every class is a discussion - mix it up a bit, and don't assign an entire book to be read in a week, that's overload and not fair to students whose other professors also assigned entire books to be read.
There was too much reading. We have more than one class so its hard to keep up the reading. SHouldn't expect us to read every single page.

Too much reading for one night. Feels like she thought she was the only class we had in our lives. Plus some of us I'm sure, or atleast I do, work and it's harder.
Very hard grader on tests and papers. Which is my fault anyways. Some of the movies were difficult to watch. So much reading! I could never keep up

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
An excellent literature analyst. Occasionally class discussions seem to fizzle out, and awkward silence in uncomfortable. She has a deep understanding about AMST literature and how the texts interact with each other.
Mari is very knowledgeable and willingly shares her mana'o with her students. Her lectures, While surprising at the doctoral level, were critical to the success of the course. She provided a solid foundation for future classes that will help me as a student and as a scholar.
Expectations were clearly set early on and throughout the course. Class discussion was regularly encouraged. I, personally, would have liked to see some actual excerpts of the theoretical frameworks mentioned-- though, honestly, I am not sure where, in the syllabus, there is space to fit them.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The cluster paper was an excellent assignment to ensure an understanding of one of the core areas of AMST studies. The journal analysis was also great for early grad students.
Mari's lectures were indispensable. Class discussion, while slow to start, picked up steam in the end and helped to extend the learning of/from the class.
17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The final paper requiring 2 additional books was a little much to add to lengthy reading list. An alternative would be to do one or two cluster papers instead of it.
18. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Important for early AMST students, deep on important literature.
Excellent
19. Other comments:
A designated break would be nice so that students do not miss any discussion or notes.
This is an excellent course, but I think the grade percentages should be done differently. It doesn't seem right that class participation only accounts for 25% of the overall grade when it requires reading a book a week and actively participating in class discussion, which constitutes the bulk (i.e. all) of class meetings. Meanwhile, the final paper alone counts for 50% of the course grade, and does not allow time for revisions. This seems to me to be a very skewed basis for grading, and puts too much weight on an assignment that is left to the very end of the course.
Mari's personable nature combined with her command of the subject mater made this a truly enjoyable course. I am better for haven taken it.
