This course taught me to look up the current events that are happening all around the world. In ten years I will probably remember this course because it kept me informed about news and issues around the world and not just in the US.

Definitely remember this course, I truly enjoyed the subject geography.

I think the first test should have a small curve because not many people know what to expect from it (because it's the first test). It might help pad everyone's grade a bit, and everyone will know what to expect for next time.

If Krishna spoke a little clearer; it's hard to understand her accent sometimes.
This course could be improved by adding more videos in different places of the world.

Discussion board to share thoughts and summaries of weekly readings
I loved the debates they were very engaging.
About the world food.
The draft writing and peer feedback helped me see where I was lacking and how others perceived my writing.
Debates as well as weekly write ups
The debates she made us tackle issues from both sides and it was interesting to see how much arguing was done
learning the points of view on the topic material. Really improved my understanding of the material. Will recommend.
Reading articles that pertain to environmental issues showed me that sometimes its not how much the issue's argument is debated but how well it can be expressed in terms of writing.
Debating about class topics was helpful and valuable gave me more confidence when discussing environmental topics in a public environment

Professor Suryanata is very knowledgeable in this subject but likes to keep up a discussion which engages the whole class. She pushes you because she knows you can be better and although it seems tough is very helpful in the end. I learned a lot from the class about the subjects and myself. Thanks for a great semester!

PLEASE REVISE the approach in guiding students through the learning process, you are a knowledgeable teacher, do not let it go to waste by not saying exactly what points you want your students to learn. Do not think of this as students are being 'too lazy' in figuring out points, but rather highlighting the material you want students to learn. Everyone reads and sees information differently, I will read an article differently than you because of my experiences.

I really enjoyed writing the proposal.
Learning to do literature reviews and cite references effectively.
Working together with peers and being forced to share our work with others.
Being forced to write out our proposals was the most valuable part of this class. It helped me re-focus my research, although i found it stressful at times.

Some of the readings were good, but after some of the class not doing the reading, any review of them seemed to get dropped.

Experienced graduate student panel. They were mostly people who took way longer than they should have. I would have liked to hear from some people who took a more reasonable amount of time to finish.
It was not helpful or useful to have human and physical/spacial geographers commenting on each others papers. I understand that everyone can provide feed back, and that the geography department prides itself on being inclusive in all fields, but it is a waste of time for spatial/physical geographers to read human geographers papers and vise verca. the next time this class is taught, it would be much more time efficient and constructive to allow the respective streams peer review from the start. From talking with almost every other person in the class, this complaint came up from all students.

I think the time has come for someone else to take their turn. Krisna is great, but I feel has wearied of teaching this course. Given the Human Geography led 695, 696 could benefit from a Physical Geography perspective. Although Krisna was able to but her self into a physical sciences mind set and did a great job.(695 could be taught by physical and 696 human, but one of each might be useful).
Include the PhD students.
I think the course accomplished what it set out to do.
Please allow the three streams (physical, spatial, human) to peer reivew among their own groups. This will ensure the writer gets the greatest amount of feed back possible. It is a huge waste of time and very frustrating to mix papers across the streams.

A very productive course for me, other students seemed less committed and it seemed acceptable to not put the effort in.
Had a great time in class and produced my proposal in one semester.

Not get too in to particular subjects. There were some moments where the professor was discussing about things and then it got so specific and detailed that some people fell asleep.
Suryanata is very passionate about geography, but has an interesting way to present it to students. Maybe it was her teaching style or how she thinks her students will interpret her, but I and several other students didn't completely grasp the major themes introduced within the different regions. Also, if we had more review sessions I think it would help me a lot and most likely get a better grade on the midterms because there would be more explanations of things rather than just go over stuff during lecture. In lecture, all it is, is slide after slide after slide. Maybe even if we had more interaction (iClicker questions) throughout lecture, I would've payed more attention.
Try to make the lecture more engaging and entertaining, although the iclickers are fun. The study guide should be more detailed as to what will be on the test.
Order more iclickers and textbooks so that the UH bookstore doesn't run out of supplies so quickly.
I had a slightly difficult time understanding my teacher's accent. Maybe have more review sessions that are lengthier so we can cover everything needed.

I felt the course could have been done at a quicker pace in order to include more regions of the world. Lectures often dragged out topics that I felt could have been covered quickly and thus increase student concentration in class.

I think some of the iclicker questions were too specific for it to be reasonable for us to be expected to know the answer. However, since she gives so much extra credit, this isn't too big of a problem. I didn't like the map portion of the second midterm because I don't think it should be required to know the exact location of every single country in the continent. I think it should be more focused on knowing the general location of the major countries.
Change to MWF lecture instead of TR
Maybe have a review session after covering one unit/chapter? There was a lot of content in each unit/chapter and the review session we had would cover multiple units, so it was hard to go over everything in such a short amount of time. Or have the review session extended to 1 & 1/2 hours? It may seem long for the students, but there is a lot to go over if we review multiple chapters?
Its so disorganized. What we are taught in class is usually never on the test. The homework is. But Its really really disorganized I usually have no idea what is going on.
Could do away with the long essays at the end of tests and add 2-3 more short essay questions.

Maybe just tell students to buy the mastering geography code/subscription instead of buying both the subscription and the textbook? I used the textbook available online in mastering geography, so there was no need to use the actual book. Or, instead of selling the textbook with the mastering geography subscription, sell the iClicker with the subscription?
I sit at the front of the second half of the class and I like it there. Good lighting (sorry I really can't see in the very front), the professor seems to walk by or at least look my way quite often, and I'm engaged by the presentation. However, I just feel that the people in the back are losing out on a great opportunity to learn, especially since there are no fail safes against Google.
I really liked this class, and I found it pretty interesting. Krisna is a great professor, and Hilary is a great T.A.

The weekly reading responses were valuable and the 3 paper format spread throughout the course was valuable. It required deeper inquiry into at least three aspects of the course materials which I don't think would have happened with just one final paper.
Exposure to different points of view and subjects that are not often examined so thoroughly.

this is the best course offered at the university. the course content, materials, guided discussion, and every element of the course makes it an absolute joy to attend each class. the learning and transformational ways that it makes you think will leave you a much more thoughtful and changed person. it's exciting to experience the same with others in the class who connect similarly.

The overall tension in the class to see who could be more critical and who could deconstruct everything the most seemed to be a competition. It was as if you couldn't say one thing without being criticized or questioned.

I enjoy the seminar style but I do wish that there were occasional lectures from Krisna. She is a wealth of knowledge and it would be interesting to learn more directly from her.
Although this is a seminar course and based on discussion, there are many difficult concepts about theories that were not clarified from the discussion itself. People like to discuss about general issues and more empirical cases because they are more comfortable to talk about those issues, and I understand that. However, I also want to build strong knowledge on theories too because the reason I take the course is to learn and to understand correctly about the issues. Therefore, I'd like to have at least 15 minutes that the professor would give introduction about theories so that everybody's can be on the same page and thus being able to participate in the conversation. I think one reason that people don't want to talk is because people are afraid that they say something stupid and because they feel that they don't understand the issues well enough. Another suggestion is that, in the seminar course, professor tries not to speak and tries to let student talk. However, I observe that such style of teaching, most of the time, led to the waste of time. Students keep talking on the topic that may not relevant or useful. I like to see the strong role of professors in leading the discussion and make sure students understand and get knowledge as much as possible.
It would have been good to be able to practice applying the content of the course to students' own research interests. However, it is understandable that in a survey course, having a project assignment would cut into the time to cover other relevant topics in the field.

This course could be improved by considering more main points on the exams because of the large amounts of information given. It could also be improved by shortening the length of the midterms to allow enough time to adequately answer questions and finish the exam.
Give each region adequate time. I feel like the last three regions were very rushed and wasn't as in depth as the earlier regions.
I would have liked the Professor to have gone over some of the "facts" that were the multiple choice questions on the exams. all her main concepts I did well, but I struggled on the multiple choices because we didn't review it much in class.
Maybe if there is another way to teach beside just going over the power points. Improve better preparation for the mid terms.
I like how the course is structured. The instructor follows the syllabus and that's good.
The region that I was most interested in received very little coverage because of the lack of time remaining in the end of the semester. I would suggest for the schedule to be better managed so that each region receives the same amount of attention.

For a 100-level class, I believe the exams were difficult and required intricate knowledge of much of the vast information covered during a certain period, while also knowing random facts mentioned once during a class. The length of these exams caused me to rush through parts of the exam and did not allow me to adequately answer all the questions given.
I learned a lot about history and how the world today is doing when it came to globalization. I would consider taking a course like this in the future. I also feel the same about the instructor.

Have professor from related department as guest such as NREN to support student build connection with them and figure out their committee members.
It would have been good to have more instruction specifically on geographic research methods that could be tailored to meet the needs of the students (e.g. readings and discussion, and lecturer, on human geographic research methods and a parallel set of readings, discussion and lectures on physical methods). There has not been a human geography research methods offered in some time. Research methods in other departments are helpful but often not directly applicable. I have seen a presentation template used in other proposal defenses and presentation evaluation checklists. These would be useful for helping sharpen our presentations.
In class review of example research proposals would have been helpful. Also, more feedback from the professor would have been helpful, as opposed to just peer review feedback.

The workshop style of the course is really helpful and good exercise to get us focus on what we really want to do. The reading materials are very helpful as well. Requiring us to do the Responsible Conduct of Research is also good which makes us more aware of what and what not to do as we begin to work on our own research.

Some of the readings should be updated. Also, class debates may benefit from more specific topics such as "water privatization in Peru: should the IMF be involved?", or "can tuna fishing in the US northwestern states sustain itself?" just for some off the head examples. Then on Thursday go over the general, big picture concept such as you do now.
Incorporate more recent developments in the issues being discussed

Just to again touch on the debates, I felt it overwhelming to properly prepare for the debate. A lot of the issues, especially the early ones, were very dependent on location, and it is difficult, at least for me, to analyze issues in Africa, Latin America, and other places around the world regarding the same topic. I don't know if you deliberately did this as a learning experience (or to watch us suffer hah), but I felt that it in some ways negatively affected my grade. And I can't say I learned much on some topics other than it really depends on where you live regarding an issue. I guess that is the spatial element of a geography class. But I appreciate the critique, especially in writing. It gives me some motivation to improve in effectively delivering a written argument. Thanks for the class. It was my favorite this semester.

Kem and Krisna are all-around just great teachers- some of the best I've had at UH. They really get you to think critically and ask a lot of their students... without having to ask. They're very knowledgeable and are able to connect to all types of students. I also appreciate that she set the deadline for our final papers a few weeks ahead of finals week, giving us students a breather to finish-up papers for other classes during the end of term.

grounded in theory but open to far ranging discussion. the best course I've taken as a graduate student, and this course in itself is a reason to return to higher education! having kem lowry join for class also a big plus! they greatly complement each others teaching styles.
This course had a lot of discussion among students. This discussion led me to think each toipic deeply. Sometimes, I was confused. but it was good opportunity for me to reconstruct my opinion.
Discussion, readings, and feedback from other students.
The weekly readings were for the most part very interesting, and our discussions helped to solidify concepts and work out misunderstandings. Ultimately, reading Mark Baker's book at the end of the semester really helped to pull everything together for me.
Readings on political and economic context for different resource management regimes, and class discussions where people from different parts of the world shared their experiences.

the best kind of instructor. open door policy to students, genuinely interested in their personal development, an inspirational course accompanied by an inspirational speaker.
Combined lecture with the discussions on readings may give a better foundation for applying CBNRM principles. Also, reduced readings with greater focus may give a clearer picture of the week's main points.
Sometimes I felt like our discussions would go off on tangents that were a little off topic, but I liked the fact that the students were generally able to steer the conversation. Occasionally a bit more guidance may have been helpful to help us focus on specific concepts.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The research proposal presentations were extremely valuable. It really showed what I was lacking and the fact that I was leaning heavily on the things that came easy to me. The portion of the class relating to the literature review were enlightening and helped me understand how to physically lay everything out. The best part of this course, outside of the construction of the research proposal, was the panel with current UH post-masters students. Their lessons, good and bad, were invaluable and I really appreciated their input. This needs to be a MANDATORY event every year this class is offered because it shows A) that graduating in two years is possible B) that graduating in five years is possible C) just how easy it is to hide in academics D) how to avoid common pitfalls
All aspect of the course would be very helpful for a graduate student
The push to get our assignments done and actually improve on our own proposals was great and although it may have been difficult to do at the time, it was well worth it overall. The book assigned for the course was also really helpful and a good supplement to the course material.
Feedback on our writing and details about how to produce a good project proposal step by step. Very useful discussion on gadgets and tools. Great insight given from past graduate students. Good information in the hands-on excel presentation from Dr Mora.

The instructor is sharp. She was willing to bridge both human and physical geographers by adhering to both of our needs in research methods. From my experience, it seems most human or physical geographers struggle with walking over to the other side, but not her. This is INVALUABLE to teaching a course such as this that contains both human and physical geography students new to the craft of research. This course is probably one of the most important for us grad students. It is critical we follow with Krisna as an example of how it must be taught. Additionally, she gave me great comments on my proposal, when I know it is out of her expertise. This impressed me.

A little more focus on the UH Manoa process to get a thesis approved and the different administrative processes involved. I think the graduate chair and the department head would like to have shown a little more interest in the different projects by attending the research proposal presentations
I think more practice in developing proposal would be nice
This course is well designed to help grad students write a proposal by the end of their first year. However, it is difficult for students who do not yet know what there thesis project will be so more focus on designing the actual project at the beginning of the course would be useful for those students.
I think creating standards for the course would be a good start. Again, we can start with Krisna as an example.

Overall I really enjoyed this course and I am very grateful for the help on my research proposal. I feel that I am light years ahead of those in other departments and will have no problem finishing my thesis in a year.

I really enjoyed this class as it was challenging and really pushed me. This is a great course within the masters curriculum and many other students in different departments wish they had a class like this as well offered for them. I am personally fascinated by the subject of Geography, but having Professor Suryanata made this course even more interesting. Professor Suryanata is very qualified in this subject, and is truly passionate about the issues in the world today. Developing awareness of other cultures and issues in the world is very important to me, and this class was a great elective choice. Professor Suryanata and her assistant Benjamin were both very friendly and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed this class.
Using the iClicker for surveys and quizzes, it was the only class I ever did that in, but I liked it.
remembering how Professor Suryanata called attention to the people who were not paying attention. It's good insentive to actually PAY attention in class, so as not to get called out.
having more indebt knowledge of these countries I have visited or lived in, especially in the Middle East and during this war.
Learning that the air pollution in Asia literally keeps the skies orange and brown.
I will probably remember some of the content like the Rwanda genocide. Other information is hard to retain, but is interesting.

Benjamin was excellent to have in this class, and I know that all of my classmates will agree. He was very patient and helped answer any questions or concerns that we had. He is a very nice fellow.

The teaching Assist was excellent!
Should be more professional. Shouldn't be talking to the professor while giving announcements and should be better prepared to speak. His approachable nature was great, but his approach to what he was responsible for made me, quite honestly, take the class less seriously.

He was very set on making sure that the students understood how to do the homework by making tutorials and posting them on Laulima. Also he was very kind.
The teaching assistant, Ben, helped grade all of the tests and homework, created tutorials on how to do the homework, created study guides for the tests, and taught one part of the lecture material. He was always available for help and he always the knew the answer to any question. On top of having office hours he was also willing to meet at a scheduled time.

The class was pretty crowded, it was hard to find seats sometimes.
More multiple choice questions. Cumulative final + 3 essay questions is rediculous for a 100 level course.
This course could be improved by going a little more in depth in certain areas of the world like Africa which people know little about and less time on places like Europe which more people are familiar with.
Perhaps this course could be improved by maybe not flashing through the slides so fast, since it's difficult to tell what sort of Info you need from the slide. Also, perhaps the really really important things could be in a color that emphasizes this, so that students can not write the whole entirety of the slide thinking they needevery bit of information.

Cover more regions throughout the course so it is quite the "world" geography class.
Cover material that is related to Hawaii. This will help to understand how these islands play into the geography of the world.

I do not think that this course could be improved upon.
Some elasticity could be removed, at times it felt like the sheer amount of extra-credit given removed the overall importance of tests and assignments. It felt as though when second chances (or third chances) were given, they were not appreciated due to the amount of extra credit that could be earned elsewhere. This being said, I don't think that second/third chances are a bad thing, however, they should feel like a redemption, not just another drop of water in a lake.

The iclicker question could be some of the questions on the tests. Course could be improved by giving several essay prompt questions before the test.
It could be improved if the lecture had a different schedule everyday. For every chapter we would go over the same topics and issues for every country or region, and it got to be very redundant. It would be better if instead of just lecturing every day there was something else for us to do to learn the material. Also, the tests were filled with essays and shorts answer questions. It was extremely difficult to finish the tests on time with the amount of time given. I hardly finished the tests because there were so many paragraphs and essays required. It would be more effective for me to learn if instead of midterms and finals, there would be a test after each individual chapter that we discussed. THis would have helped me understand the material much better.
I believe the course could be improved with more exercises and movie clips to be watched as evidence used.
Have better review sessions before tests and talk more about the possible essay and short answer promps. Tests were hard because we had no idea what questions would be the essays.
Less time could be spent on asking so many students questions that the professor would answer herself eventually. More time could be spent elaborating on some topics actually covered in the exam, and possibly discuss topics that are written in the textbook that students may need elaborating on.

Condensing the written portion of the test to either an essay or short answer could help and although I have taken tests like these in upper level classes, it may overwhelm freshman students. That's it.
More interesting activities to keep the class involved.
The information provided could be presented in a more interesting manor. The professor could be more open to other people's ideas, ever if they are wrong; use every wrong answer as a learning opportunity.
Some information was not relevant to the class. We passed a lot of time on things that were not really important.
This course could be improved by have a text that is not loose leaf paper. It makes it difficult to keep organized sometimes. Also, this class is very large and it is difficult to hear the professor. It would be better if she could speak louder and more clearly.
The class is good just the way it is.
Not as many long essays on the exams. It is not an english class so i believe short answer questions would be more suited for this class.
Better preparation. Videos should be ready to play and sound should be adjusted. Waiting for things to start and missing the first sentences of a video presentation was frustrating. Personally, I really don't like missing out on material because of technical difficulties. If there is a problem with sound PLEASE rewind it back. Sometimes openings are important for grasping key concepts in a video--a flag for what to pay attention to.
maybe give a more detailed study guide. also the essay questions should be given in advance so students will be well prepared for it instead of having to guess what our question will be.
Lectures can get a little unorganized or off subject, but other than that my biggest concern is the preparation for the exam. The study guide could be greatly improved by not including what's not on the exam or by including EVERYTHING that actually will be on the exam. Also, this is not an english class and there is not enough time to write 2 page essay answers. And Suryanata wants us to answer with intro, body, and conclusion? That's just out of the question and most likely plays a large role in why students don't do so well on her exams. She expects too much for a 100 level course as far as the essay answers go and isn't specific about what she;s looking for in the essay either, which explains why we do so bad on the written part. I'd change this immediately!

Teacher assistant needs to be more involved in the course discussion. When we have study group sessions he needs to demonstrate all of his knowledge to the class to further enhance our chances of passing and understanding the course.
Better study guides or a better exam reviews. I felt it hard to remember and take in all the material the way the class is currently set up.
Professor Suryanata has truly mastered teaching this class. She knows what works, what doesn't and what is fair. I see no area that needs improvement.

I don't mean to disrespect, but I should've listened to the comments on Ratemyprofessors.com and avoid this clas. This is not even a WI course, and I have to write so much for the exams.
I like how there is a lot of discussion time instead of just a constant lecture.
This was a fun class, I just wish I could write faster to keep up with notes.

This was a great course! Dr. Suryanata was able to speak and keep the attention of a large class very effectively, which is a hard thing to do. She was always positive and made learning the material interactive and fun. I really appreciate how she made everyone turn off their phones and laptops so I wasn't distracted by inconsiderate students.
The work load gets the student involve in the class.
I wish we got to talk about the other regions in the world not mentioned like Oceania.
Overall, I enjoyed the knowledge I received by taking this course. It was eye-opening and made me more aware of current events. I've also had greater understanding of what is happening in the world.

Great(freshman)course to take. Professor Suryanta offers many chances for extra points especially giving them out in tests, iclickers, and homework thus providing a lot of cushion room. All homework is displayed on the syllabus and all done online so we can do it at our own pace as long as we turn it in time. Great iclicker questions especially at the first days of class.

This course was not what I expected, material wise.
While I have a major that is completely unrelated to the subject of geography, I still found the course fascinating. There are so many things happening in the world, most of which people are unaware. This class talks about those things that are not presented in the main stream media but yet are so essential to have a basic understanding of a certain area. I would recommend this course to anyone no matter what major they were, even a neuroscience major like myself.
Professor, since the beginning of the semester, you reminded me of Eda Mode from The Incredibles. I found it adorable and looked forward to coming to class. :)

I thought it was going to be a course of studying where mountains and other geographical features were, but I was relieved and surprised to find out it was more about the culture and current events of different regions. a few guest speakers about agriculture in Hawaii and how it relates to the readings would be interesting.
The course is great, but I could see how the format depends highly on the quality of the students enrolled and somewhat reliant on one of the students that chooses to do the paper of the week having some background expertise or being dedicated enough to do background research. Maybe reserving 15-20 minutes or so at the end of each class to preview the next week's discussion topic with a brief lecture could address this problem.

I didn't fill in the above parts mostly because even though there were parts of the course/reading that I didn't enjoy, it was purely because those parts did not fall into my academic interest.

I don't think this course needs improvement, she is an excellent professor and delivers the information wonderfully.
When we were running out of time, she sometime skipped a couple of slides or showed them for a secound and moved on to next topic very quickly. I thought it might be better if she explain more on those slides too.
Maybe allow for half the class before the exam to review. I was unable to make it to the scheduled review sessions because of other classes I had to attend to. And instead of an exam being on two regional locations maybe do an exam for each one to obtain a deeper understanding of each topic. This way other students may not be as stressed as I was for each exam being a heavy chunk of our final grade.
The course could be improved if reading certain sub-sections could be assigned prior to lecture so that the student can have a better and/or thorough understanding of what will be taught the next lecture.

Shorten the length of the exam. I like the essay questions but I felt that the exam was too much. Be specific about what material will be on the exams and on the random iclicker quizzes. Exams felt overwhelming and too much information given in one class period.

I understand Ms. Suryanata discourages the use of electronic devices during her lecture, however I feel that a majority of the students (as well as myself) can take more effective notes if they were permitted to use their laptop. I realize the reasoning in banning such devices, but I do not believe that responsible students should be punished or handicapped due to the misbehavior or lack of maturity displayed by others. Ultimately, final grades will reflect those who take the class seriously as compared to those who do not.
I understand the amount of students in a single class, but most students look for grades being updated via laulima to keep themselves tracked of their own grades and to motivate themselves to study hard for upcoming mid-term and finals. Pretty much what I am saying is if possible, early updates of assignments and iclicker quizzes, etc.

Make it clearer what test information will be coming from the book, and what information will be coming from the lecture. Each book chapter spends a few pages on weather patterns and regional climate, a few pages on the region's society and political standing, but there is no indication in the class which parts of the book should be read very closely. Students end up wasting time reading and re-reading parts of the chapter that are densely packed with information, only to realize they studied the wrong things for the test.
More interactive material and a variety of presentation methods would have helped especially since the material is very detailed and in depth.Discussions should be shorter because students mind tend to wonder away from the subject as discuss draws out.
Better study guides that narrow in on the specifics we should know for the exams.
This course was excellent and truly learned quite a bit. I really do not think that this course needs any additional improvement.

My favorite class!
Dr. Suryanata is an very knowledgable prefessor and her lectures were clearly explained. By taking this course, I got more interested in certain countries, and it made me want to study more about those countries.
Brandon was an excellent TA. I can't express how grateful I was to have him as an extra aid. He was there whenever I needed extra help, extremely knowledgable on each region we discussed and timely on his email responses. I really enjoyed his lecture on his thesis too, very relevant to the course.

I enjoyed the topics of this class. However, I felt over whelmed with information between lectures and reading the chapters. I felt many of the multiple choice questions on the exams were too specific in detail such as "which country has the highest fertility rate?" All the countries are talked about often in different areas such as fertility rate, arable land, population, and many others and it's difficult to absorb the broader concepts as well as the specific details.
I would highly recommend taking this course. It provides a social knowledge about the world.

Everything! this was an awesome course. The readings were stimulating, the subject matter is very relevant to the events happening today. Professor Suryanata's lectures were not so formal to be boring or restrictive. They were engaging and pushed me to decipher globalization - the layers underlying freedoms and issues: social, cultural, environmental. I really liked that she asked us questions that gave us the opportunity to provide our input. My knowledge base was expanded greatly with this one course. I really loved how the course was not entirely lecture, discussion, or watching films. The same themes were presented us to in a multitude of ways that reinforced the point being made.
Some of the papers later in the course were useful and inspired critical thought.

Unfortunately the readings were a bit extensive. I preferred the weekly readings before the novel and book review. To read the whole book was time intensive. I would have preferred to have read books by Amartya Sen or Thomas Friedman than Cadillac Desert.
Many of the papers, especially early on, were biased, localized, not peer reviewed, and attempted to apply these perspectives as world truths. The peer review process in class was a joke. Needed more time and some sort of accountability to those who didn't review papers. There was not enough time given to properly organize a group presentation. Lack of interdisciplinary knowledge lead to misunderstandings of commonly used terms.

Trying to make a social movement for becoming 'green'
My learning logs. I will always be able to refer to them. Plus, the course challenged us to draw connections to the trends of today. If we made those connections we should be able to remember them in our daily lives. Already I am uses the themes and arguments from our weekly readings and using them in other classes. Specific things will stand out to me: most likely things I have written about, such as, the Caribbean and how the people were saved from marginalization because of the unique organization of the state and intercropping; Amartya Sen's belief that freedoms can be made through democracy and a government that can distribute power and wealth - Its not about resources, its about distribution; the concept of political ecology; the clear explanation of capitalism (and its historical development)... I can go on. The videos were very impressive and there is a good chance that I will be able to take with me the main ideas of Krisna's lectures.

The debates.
Debates were a valuable tool that motivated outside research of important current issues and events. While the debate relied heavily on student effort, commentary was provided in a lecture for us to better understand the subject.
The debate portion of the class was extremly valuble. It challenged me to view an issue from sides I wouldn't normally agree with. Provided an interesting learning opportunity.

Debating, learning how to research properly.
Really enjoyed the debate topics
I thought that the debates encouraged me to research all viewpoints of different environmental issues as i was able to learn a lot from studying viewpoints that i had just passed negative judgements on. I learned to do the research myself before forming an opinion on an issue and that all sides of an argument usually are valid.
I enjoyed having a class based around debates. I found this very valuable because you see that there is a side to every issue. I feel it is an importnat skill to know how to present a side of an issue, even if you don't agree with it. I also feel that this class was the perfect amount of work for an upper level writing intensive class. I really got a lot out of it.
Debates by fellow classmantes coupled with instructor presentation on related topic.
Lecture after the debate helped me understand the issue more. The films/ videos she brought to the class were all great.
The lectures after the debates were very valuable and helped clear up any misunderstandings.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The learning logs.

Nothing.
Not clear on what topics she wants to cover up front. Needs more in depth understanding of the topics she presents. Needs to organize thoughts so they are clear, concise and to the point.
learning logs because rather than spark interest in a new topic via reaction papers to new required readings etc., writing learning logs was more like homework versus something exciting to talk/write about
none, i felt that everything we did in this class was valuable.
I thought that the learning logs were a little redundant. As long as i attended class i was able to engage and learn.
This class was great! I can't think of anything that was not valuable about it.
Sometimes the reading did not effectively help understand the debate.
The learning logs were least valuable. I know that I at least stated my opinions and thoughts in class and did not think that it was necessary to write a 2 page journal about them. I know it is a writing intensive course though.

Peer review sessions
None. I thought they were appropriatly assigned, and they helped with debates.
Have more opportunity for feedback than just the one draft.
change compulsory learning logs to reaction papers to either print/media sources (i.e. TED talks, journal articles); more intellectually stimulating than rehashing course notes and trying to sum up what occurred over a period of four weeks
none. I think they are a good length and effective for learning about the subject

I wouldn't change anything about the writing assignments.
Sometimes the comments she put on the papers were not consistent. She didn't leave any comments on the draft but marked off the points in the final paper. And sometimes I couldn't read her hand writing. I would appreciate if she can check and mark the papers more thoughtfully.
Instead of writing the learning logs, the students could journal about what they learned from each reading and debate to better evaluate their effort in the class. The learning logs were easy, but I thought a little too generalized.

Nothing...wish we could of spent more time on e-waste, and the tour de trash was amazing.
Make debates more structured, focus more on empirical evidence. Choose issues that clearly have two sides.
possibly change up the format of debates/debriefs throughout the semester because it becomes very much the same and expected; do not always rely on powerpoint presentations and instead, assign required readings and open up for class discussion, which can go towards O credit
not really sure because I strongly feel that this is the best course I've taken at UHM, and definitely one of the best classes I've had since I've been in college. I will always remember this experience.
Just keep the course up to date with current environmental issues every semester.
Well, I really enjoyed watching some of the video clips from Youtube, e.g. the story of stuff and the swedish professor on population. Maybe more short and exciting educational clips like that
it's already a great course!
Even though these debates are of recent events in the world, perhaps students could bring in news articles or journal on those instead.

Systematic review of political ecology literatures
- the instructor writting reading responses and sharing them with students - the conceptualized framework of the class which had been stated through the semester (it helped students get main point and learn how each reading connects to each other)
I really enjoyed the readings, the position papers ensured that each student is on top of things and encourages group discussion
Exposure to key thinkers and concepts.
i feel my position paper allocated by instructor are challenging ,and make me understand my deficiency on development theory as well as political ecology.
Useful discusions and vast array of helpful text
Comments on the draft submission of the three position papers were helpful for understanding the issues. The book review was also a valuable learning experience. I am extremely glad that I took this course. The course was demanding especially with reference to writing papers but the overall load distribution was balanced across the whole semester which was very helpful.

Although I like having position papers, I think the amount of readings per week can be demanding. I think it should be 3 max, per week.
Student feedback on the position papers were not very useful. There were not many comments on other students' position papers.

1) Preliminary explanation of class materials, or 2) Providing power point presentation of core principles and concepts.
the class might be started by going around the room letting each student say something about the reading for 2-3 minutes, so that the class can hear from everyone (apart from skimming through the commentaries)
I think the weekly readings should be 3 per week instead of four. More readings from Liberation Ecologies would be good. Perhaps instead of a book review, a final project/research presentation would be a good way to have students pull together everything they've learned in class.
The weekly reading load could be made lighter. Perhaps only 3 articles could be made compulsory instead of 5-6 articles per week.
