Oddly enough, I found one of the most valuable aspects of the course, for me, was the small anthropological exercise of interpreting a document. Though it was only one day, it really helped me to solidify what it is I want to do with my education in the future.

Understanding the Okinawan diaspora is valuable in understanding the history and struggle they have persevered. It has opened my eyes to strategies, by the people of Okinawa, in order to keep and spread culture and traditions.

I probably learned the most from the videos and the readings. It also helped that we had group discussions on the readings in order to make sure that we understood the content.

Films and Guest speakers

Everything. I learned a lot about Okinawan culture that I never really knew before, and I feel that everything about the course from the way it was organized to the resources we used and the topics we discussed were essential to that.

The aspect that I felt was the most valuable is how Professor Yano brought all the material together and taught it to us via a collaboration of lecture, mixed-media, guest speakers, discussions, and assignments.

lectures/readings

I have the same answer for both the most and least valuable aspects of the class - the group discussions. When other members of the various discussion groups of which I was a part were prepared, the groups talks were great. I felt that I learned a lot, and was exposed to multiple perspectives on the reading that I wouldn't have had access to otherwise. I also really enjoyed the speakers that came into class, especially Norman at the end. While the class readings were insightful, there's always (usually) a very powerful element to hearing someone actually speak about the same topics from their own experience. Hearing Norman talk about his own experience with the performing arts and identity was wonderful, and really helped me to think about and prepare for the final.

The reading materials were the most valuable because they gave good insight into and related back to the topic of the class. The reading materials were a different read that the regular anthropology class because the book was an anthology of Okinawans in the Hawaii Okinawan Community. The movie and media selection was great- find more up to date media to show, some of the movies were quite outdated and the perspectives may have changed. I definitely LOVED Norman and the many guest speakers Dr. Yano brought in to supplement and reinforces some of the themes and objectives of the course. Keep Norman around & bring him back!

Aspects that were useful were the lectures that help clarify and give a different perspective of thinking. Media and guest speakers also presented experiences useful for the essay work.

All were valuable.

As long as you're learning, there is never something that is least valuable.

Nothing was least valuable in this course. When it comes to a course about a culture that is easily overlooked, like Okinawa, everything that comes up is important to process of learning.

All aspects of this course worked in collaboration with each other.

As I mentioned in the previous question, I think the least valuable aspect of the class was (at times) the group discussions. It really just depended on whether or not everyone in the group had done the readings. Often, it felt, others in my groups had not. This became especially frustrating when we switched to have discussions based on fewer readings. At times, it felt like I was talking to myself, and therefore wasn't getting much out of the group.

The powerpoints weren't entirely least valuable, but I think she could revise and reorganize the content so that way the presentation of the theories won't seem soo intimidating. Also I found that having mostly all lectured classes was least valuable because this made the class really boring and not engaging. I'd rather have more discussions in class.

Presenting what each group learned to the class. I felt that because each had their own topics, listening to what each group discovered left myself in the dark or having a hazy understanding.

Although the amount of guest speakers was sufficient, I believe having as many speakers as possible helps to understand the meaning of the course and the importance of concepts discussed.

As a "guinea pig" class, I think it went well overall. I think if there can be different reading material used, as well as less reading, it might go a lot better. I also feel that because Dr. Yano uses powerpoints, it's a little difficult because her powerpoints don't give as much information as opposed to when she's talking. It's hard to take notes that way and so I think I retained and wrote down less information than I could have.

Better Textbooks

I think the course was fine the way it was already organized. But, perhaps give a little more visual examples or even more guest speakers? Otherwise though, the course is great.

The one possible suggestion I have in terms of improving the teaching of this course concerns the group discussions. There may be a better way to conduct group discussions of the readings.

the one week gap between peer-review and final draft deadline was beneficial. fewer readings with more in-depth discussion of them would have been better.

Hm, this is difficult. My immediate response is to say up the reading level. And yet, it seemed like others didn't always do the reading, despite it being a pretty light load. I thought the class was great, overall. Don't really have any other suggestions.

Please include more reading discussions in class, this would really help us to not fall asleep or seem so distracted and discussions will provide variety to the class agenda and will also keep us on track so we don't procrastinate. I think it would be interesting to have a final project- like choose something about Okinawa, talk about it, and relate the topic to and in context of one of the main themed quesitons for the course.

Coming from outside an anthro major there was a lot of ways of thinking the most of the class was already used to. There is a feeling of being on the outside if you don't have anthropology skills under the belt.

As the first class on Okinawa that I took, I feel that this class covers Okinawa very well. I wish that there could have been less powerpoints and more videos or documentaries or something that the students are eager to learn.

I would highly recommend this course to other students.

I thought this course was great! I learned a lot about Okinawa, and yet I didn't feel at all lost or at a disadvantage from not having previous experience with the area. The main focus of the class--the diaspora--was particularly valuable to me, and I think what I learned will go far beyond the class and/or Okinawa as I look towards research in the Pacific area.

Great course! Would definitely love to sit in an audit one day in the future to see how the course evolves or progresses. Keep using Norman- he's deeply philosophical and highly amazing.

The creative way of learning about Japan

Leaning more about Japanese culture and how the past relates to the present. Instead of focusing on specific time periods, I enjoyed that Professor Yano focused on specific topics that related to Japanese culture such as enka, cute culture, globalization, nostalgia, and general ideas of the culture such as kata.

Discussing the book questions and essays in smaller groups helped improve the final to turn in to the instructor. It also forces us to make sure we don't procrastinate, which is always good.

I really enjoyed the student involvement. Allowing us to lead class discussions and think critically helped in our learning and motivation to succeed.

Exchanging and evaluating paper with each other was helpful to improve my writing skills. They gave me good suggestions.

Yano was great!! Probably one of the best professors I have ever taken at UH. I learned way more then I thought I would about Japanese pop culture. I likes the movies and the lectures!!

The lectures, which brought up a lot of different topics and connected them with theory to make a clear point, were really inspiring.

Photos, videos, going over a variety of topics.

Films.

Learning about the consumer culture and commodification of Japan, the conflict between old and new practices, and the in-betweeness of genders were all interesting.

Maybe too much lecture? I think more discussion would be interesting. . .

I really enjoyed this course, and have learned quite a bit.

sometimes the info was a little over the top maybe if I had more japanese background It might have been a little easier to take in.

I'm not sure but I don't think I related very much to the bosozoku section very much. However, I do think it would be interesting to learn more about gang culture in Japan.

She's doing a good job already. Learning a lot every class

Increase the amount of discussion since pop culture is a relatively easy topic to talk about, and drawing parallels between Japanese culture and other cultures (or within Japanese culture itself) may be interesting in seeing how concepts relate to each other.

I'm not really sure what I would suggest. I have learned a lot, and while it has been difficult it has also been a lot of fun to be a part of this process.

Writing 7-page paper in one week after watching a movie was very tough for me, and I always felt that there is not enough time to polish it. She gave us the paper topic early but paper required contents from a movie. It would help to watch the movie earlier so that students will have more time to think how to tie the movie to the topic.

This class was ther best! Maybe start off just a little slower for undergraduates but I would take this class again if I had to!!

Slightly less demanding reading could improve the course.

Please explain the requirements and expectations of the group class discussions of the readings more thoroughly. It was hard to know exactly what should or should not be done and every group was different.

Maybe there should be an introduction portion about what the course is going to be about so students who are not too familiar with the material can get a head start to better understand the material.

I enjoyed taking Professor Yano's course and will recommend it to other students who are looking for an interesting class about Japanese culture and one that will challenge them through attending class regularly, participating in discussions, and writing comprehensive papers.

This was an incredibly interesting class, and made me think about certain aspects of Japanese pop culture, as well as other pop cultures, in ways I haven't thought about before. It also helped with my observation of pop culture.

It seemed we had more than a few TA's, so I'm not sure if I could really help in "grading" him/her on any scale.

Sometimes I felt there was a bit too much expected of the graduate students.

Mini lectures were very valuable.

The reading list for the course was comprehensive and gave me a much clearer picture of the trajectory of Japan as an object of anthropological inquiry.

Having collaborative activities that allowed students to actively learn from each other. The level of critical thinking skills required for this class made it very stimulating and challenging.

Dr. Yano's ability to dig into the topics to highlight the important material. This couse is quite "think" and she is able to put the complex ideas into context and into aplicable terms.

Multiple readings for a single week--meaning not everyone had read the same thing.

Reading one full book every week. Sometimes I wished that we had been given more time to read the most important readings because we need time to process the concepts so that they will stick with us. I also wish that we could have spent more time on developing our papers with more workshop-like sessions. But overall, we did learn many valuable things.

The University of Hawai'i is so lucky to have Professor Yano. She is a wonderful teacher. She is effective and stern while at the same time remaining fair and understanding. Professor Yano has found that perfect balance between the two, being strict but not overwhelming and considerate with out being a pushover. In addition she engages with students, she likes what she does, she is very intelligent but always open to new ideas and students input. All this honestly makes me say Professor Yano is one of my favorite professor of all time. Thanks for the great semester :)

Focusing on critical thinking and the depth of our thought was very valuable to my learning experience. I do not often have classes that fully tap into my cognitive faculties.

Using film to emphasize concepts discussed in the class.

The visual examples of the topics were the most important and valuable aspect of the course to my understanding since I didn't know what all the things were before the images and descriptions.

The challenging essay topics were definitely valuable and challenged me intellectually. Taught me to be a think deeper. Professor Yano is also very knowledgeable and her lectures captivating. Her books are also excellent and great supplements to the course.

The readings and presentations all were well integrated and worked towards the ultimate goal of the class.

Prof. Yano is one of the best professors I've had in my whole college experience at UH. She is so knowledgeable and a very captivating speaker. Sometimes I felt like I should applaud her lectures!

A very enjoyable class! Professor Yano took a very difficult field (anthropology) and narrowed it down to an understandable and manageable size. This is no mean feat and I really admire that. Also, doing peer review and having an opportunity to actually improve papers and ideas in them was a great thing and what I think is truly the intent of paper writing to begin with. Once again.. commendations all around!
