I really liked the commentaries because it helped me to be aware of things that were going on in my practicum class.
This course has enhanced my teaching ability to manage a classroom and engage my students in all content lessons. It has gave me insight on how to set up my classroom, the do's and don'ts and the many encounters you will get as a future educator!

Effective instructor, very understanding and willing to work with students.
They are both great (Oba and Kupferman) individuals! They always come to class happy and teach lively! I liked the practicum check in where you got to hear what we were going through in our practicum. It was a great opportunity for us to get advice and feedback on ourselves and our field placement.

I really enjoyed it. It was indeed a struggle to incorporate some methods and strategies in my practicum class with the use of prescribed programs.

Discussing the adolescent mind is a great resource for me. The required readings were very relevant.
This course was the first opportunity that I was given to experience the education system specifically in the secondary level. What I've learned about the adolescent's state biologically and academically have given me a more in depth image of what I should be expecting in future semesters while working with students of this age.

As for activities/resources that could improve this course: simply having a larger class would have created an interesting dynamic. The materials that we did use in this course in the form of books, articles and discussion were all useful. Documentaries are also a tool that may work well in this type of course.

Have more students! haha
As mentioned previously, this course could be improved upon by having more students in the class. The program isn't as well known as the Elementary Education program, therefore the class size is significantly smaller than that of EDEF 200/310.

Very helpful. I had trouble with my mentor teacher and I was able to ask for advice on what to do about it. It was very helpful.
This course was a welcomed introduction into secondary level education. The materials used were all valuable in the actual environment of the classroom, as well were all of the in class discussions.

This course helped me better understand and create my lesson plan.
I learned that Social Studies IS an important subject that needs more attention in the classroom. Dr. Kupferman taught us many ways to facilitate social and global discussions in our classroom and how doing so, can create successful citizens.
I learned and also have great resources on methods to use in the classroom.
Melbourne method can be used in future classroom
This course helped me to understand how to incorporate Social Studies in my classroom and about teaching for Social Justice. As a future teacher, this class has made me realize that Social Studies is important to teach in the classroom.
Taught me to think outside usual perceptions of justice.
This course really helped me work towards my concentration/major because it really made us critically think about what we are getting ourself into. Each week we were actively participating in discussions that related to teaching and also culturally diverse learners. Overall this course went well.
Greater understanding of issues with teaching social studies and gained knowledge of various ways to effectively teach social studies.
Dr. Kupferman used methods to teach our college course that can be translated to methods used in an elementary school classroom. Thus the course provided relevant and useful information for my future professional career.
Yes, this course helped me to see or achieve a greater understanding of the diversie cultures and people in the world. Personally it gave me a new perspective and educationally it answered questions I previously had but never asked.
In addition to fulfilling course requirements, this class has contributed to my personal growth as a student and life long learner in that I evaluate history (and the present) more critically.

The Melbourne method can be altered a bit (as we have already talked as a class about) but I really enjoyed learning that way. I would maybe like to see an application or practice some of the methods.
I think the books could be down sized given the use of it, we did not use all sections of the book. Maybe sending out PDF's through email would be better, but then again there are some issues that might occur with availability of technology.
More variation in class activities, other than Melbourne Method

None. All of the resources used were very helpful and interesting as well.
Change the class structure up a bit, have some weeks where the whole class works together/discusses a topic. Provide resources of social studies education in action such as movies and narratives (although the books did have some good illustrations). Then as a class we could analyze and identify good and bad strategies being practiced in the subject classroom.

Sometimes the directions given were not detailed enough for me, therefore I had questions to ask about the assignment and personally I don't like having to keep asking questions to make sure I get the assignment done correctly.
The only additional resource I would like to see in this course is maybe use of media; possibly included TED talk discussions on historical events.

A great thing to improve is the grading of the Melbourne method. The overall activity is a great strategy however, the process can be improved. Question guidelines/structure need to be created and better enforced.

The only suggestions for improving the course is just maybe consider not letting our classmates evaluations go to our grade. Just cause I noticed that some people were having conflict with that. Other than that, this course was really good!
The Melbourne Method was interesting as I have never been a part of this type of teaching style. The amount of books required for this course was a bit overwhelming.
Perhaps only 6 weeks of the melbourne method, mix up the class structure a bit. I would've enjoyed more lecturing/varied activities led by you rather than just your 10 minute input at the end of every round. I learned a lot either way, it just would have made things less monotonous.
This course was extremely rigorous and required much more time than the six "contact" hours suggested in the course syllabus. It was a common complaint amongst the classmates that the work and time involved in this class was "killing us."
As for the Melbourne method, it was difficult but it pushed me to do my work. The process of this method should have a few twists to it so that ALL the groups are participating. It gave me a new experience into learning.
I enjoyed Dr. Kupferman's style of teaching. He presents history in an engaging and educational way.

Awesome instructor. Great to have such an enthusiastic and "alive" instructor at such the time of day. No sleeping at all but just lots of knowledge and good laughs. Highly recommended. Keep up the good work Dr. Dave!
He is very organized and knows his subject well! I liked that he always sent emails ahead of time so that we knew exactly what was going to happen in class. He always reminded us of deadlines and treated us fairly. Overall, great professor!
Wonderful! I really enjoy his teaching style. I would like to see him stay in the blocks. I think it would benefit teacher candidates.

Awesome professor! I learned so much in his class by participating in the Melbourne Method discussion. We were able to talk about issues related to Social Studies. I was able to see otherʻs beliefs and opinions and it helped me to understand that Social Studies is indeed important and can be fun and engaging for students.

It was a really good course, required a lot of time and also thinking. But it was a very interesting method we experienced. It was pressuring at times, but it was for our own good. Overall, this course was good!
It was a challenge but one that was doable as long as you put the time and effort into it.
Interesting course that taught me a lot of things I'll be sure to use in my future teaching, however I would have liked a bit more variation in instruction.
Excellent course, but be ready to give up any semblance of a social life--or a clean house, sleep, exercise, etc.
I had a difficult time but completing the course material given opened my eyes to new views of the world.
My overall evaluation of this course is two thumbs up. If asked by colleagues questioning whether or not they should take Kupferman's class, I would highly encourage them to do so because, even though the course is challenging, they will enjoy learning.

More examples, modules, and a more clear concise of directions. Rubrics would be helpful, so we know what to hit and what is expected. Directions were very broad. I really liked the weekly e-mails to remind the class what is coming up and what to expect.

It would have helped to have examples of what was expected out of our larger assignments like the case study because it was difficult to know exactly what Dr. Kupferman was looking for in our final product. I was not able to get a clear understanding until much later.

I have nothing to comment to "improve" his teaching methods. During the semester it's alot of work and reading and it's stressful but in the end it's for the better.
The only thing I wish Dr. Kupferman did was give us examples of what he wanted. Sometime, we had to ask a lot of questions because we were unsure of what he wanted. If he had given us examples, we'd know what he was expected or wanted.

My overall evaluation of Dr. Kupferman is I think he is an excellent teacher. Kupferman is passionate about culturally and linguistically diverse students and I think he wants to transfer that passion to those he instructs; that makes him an excellent teacher.

Good course, but much of what we talked about I already learned in Multicultural Education.
This course has taught me ways of how to deal with children of diverse cultures. It has also opened my eyes to what is happening around the world with the education of young learners and their diverse cultures, which plays a big role in shaping their education.
I gained a better understanding of identifying and meeting the needs of diverse students.
Dr. Kupferman has a talent for getting his students to view things differently and to ask critical questions regarding information. He is a great teacher.
This course has opened my eyes to the cultural and linguistic diversity of students in the classroom. It has made me also aware of issues many cultures face with sterotyping, acculturation and assimilation to the dominant cultures. I was able to learn about Mexican, Roma, Tongans, Micronesians and about the struggles these cultures faced in life. It really made me aware of my bias towards others and has really helped me to embrace a sensitivity to other cultures. As a future teacher it has made me realize that diversity will take place in my classroom, year after year I will have students from all backgrounds and that itʻs important to create a classroom that is welcoming, caring and equal for all students.
It has opened my eyes up to how I can teach culturally and linguistically diverse students. It has also taught me to be wary of belittling a culture (even if I mean well).
This course helped me towards my major because we learned a lot about cultural and linguistic children and what we have to deal with in the classroom. All the information presented to us is very useful because we need to consider all of it when we become teachers.

Create new units besides Micronesian culture/language. It felt like we focused way to much on one ethnic group. I understand your connection to it, but there are other people here who don't receive social justice besides Micronesians. Branch out a bit.

Additional examples with case studies, response papers, etc. Provide opportunities for students to play the role of a teacher in class. Make us analyze a student/classroom environment together to help us in our case study (the film and lesson about Arkansas was good, would have liked more lessons where we pick-apart something).

Excellent!!! I would definitely enroll in another class taught by Dr. Kupferman. Learning was fun and engaging. We read books about different cultures, discussed about them and I learend so much through interacting with my classmates. His teaching style was very informating and entertaining. He made jokes that was relevant to the course but funny at the same time. He is very knowledgable about Social Studies and made learning about Social Studies fun and meaningful. Social Studies was viewed as boring to me because it was lecture form and about memorizing dates, people, and events. In Dr.Kupfermanʻs class we talked about issues that were relevant to our lives and the way he taught this course helped us understand Social Studies is more than dates and names.
Great professor! He makes the hard work fun, and approaches it differently then I ever seen!

this is a wonderful class and is very much needed for anyone thinking about becoming a teacher. It is geared towards secondary education but i feel that anyone going into an education field including elementary school teachers, counselors, princpals, etc need to take this course because there is so much to be learned.
Great introduction to teaching middle and secondary education. Gives motivation and encouragement to continue onto the program.

The way professor Kupferman teaches, he does not need at improvements.
Change nothing. This class is effective and beneficial in every way. Everything has a purpose and is never boring. If anything, have the class scheduled for two days per week instead of only one.

He is a really good teacher, easy to talk to, and knows a lot about the course.
David Kupferman is an EXCELLENT professor! He has so much knowledge in the field and knows exactly how to convey the important class messages to his students. The students are never bored in his class and I really appreciated his sense of organization. Nothing is ever unclear. If I had any questions, I felt comfortable asking him whatever came to mind. He is easygoing and approachable, yet he easily gains the respect of his class because he is knowledgeable in the area he is teaching. I would recommend this professor to anyone. He is one of the best professors I have had throughout my college experience.

This is a great course taught by an excellent professor. It is a great way to introduce teaching as a career and I feel that it is necessary to take this class.

This course was very beneficial to me for my major in education because everything that was covered in class had a purpose. There was no wasted time. Every moment in the class was valuable and we always learned something new which had to do with teaching.
