7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
David regually kept us updated regarding current policy. As new reforms were passed or discussed, David would send us e-mails and links regarding them. He made me aware of the current policy and how it will impact me as a teacher. David also constantly modeled excellent teaching techniques that I will use with my students.
The warm ups and reading the papers from our peers was very helpful. The review discussion after the discussion groups presentation was also helpful to understand what was going on.
I like the way the professor made us share with the groups in variety of ways. It gave us a chance to talk to each other in a fun way. I also liked his sense of humor.
Activities to help me personally connect to policies made an impact in understanding the content presented.
The most valuable things in this course were the many different learning activities (jigsaw, card swap, group presentations, etc.). They were engaging and also helped me to learn the content and reflect on my learning.
Lear
What was more valuable and helpful in the course were the discussions and the content presented during class.
I especially liked how David made policy relevant by creating opportunities for us to connect it to what happens in the classroom and how we are affected as educators.
Everything!
David's approach to teaching about education policy was very effective in making the content engaging and comprehensible. I was not only able to grasp difficult content easily, I was also able to apply my understanding to various other concepts outside of this class.
The course helped me form more questions to ask about policy.
I found the ways of he presents the policies and guides us to explore, to think and to reflect are really valuable.
8. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
I felt the final presentation was not necessary. Although I learned from it, I felt it made the last day rushed. Also, as a cohort we had given so many presentations that I was a bit tired of watching them! I don't think I would have felt this way if I had taken this course during the first session.
Nothing.
Maybe he can give us a chance to revise our paper after having us read each other's paper that way we can get some feedback to improve our writing. Also, when we have discussion, he can maybe listen in more and give us feedback about things we might have said that addressed the issue.

Pretty much everything was useful and relevant.
The limited amount of time to understand the content. I wish there was more time.

A+
A good instructor that had good teaching methods (the warm ups, questioning). Was available for help and questions.
Effective. His rapport with us made our time together enjoyable. The activities really showed how much he knows us and seems to value our feedback.
He definitely ranks as one of the best professors I've ever had. Not only does he demonstrate a strong knowledge and passion for his content, he also is able to effectively teach it. He is very organized and connects well with his students.
I really enjoyed his sense of humor and making policy not so boring!!!
He engages his students in a variety of activities and assessments. He gave me ideas of what I could do in my own classroom to have the discuss and share more. His humor made the class much more bearable and seem doable.
I really enjoyed David's class. He was knowledgeable, approachable, and made the class interesting and engaging.
Excellent professor! Very knowledgeable. I liked how he structured his class -- conducive to ourlearning.
David is a superb instructor. One of his most valuable attributes is his ability to relate to his students and create an environment that is welcoming and safe.
open minded and relatable. He keeps students informed about current events and documents that evolving things teachers do in K-12 schools.
I have learned so much from this class, it totally changed my view of policy, and I want to be more involved in the policy in the future. Thank you!

19. My overall evaluation of this course is...
A+
A good course that open my eyes on policy and how it affects my classroom more that expected.
I really enjoyed this class and gave me great insight about how much influence policy has on education.
Relevant and effective.
I would highly recommend it to anyone in the teaching profession.
I like being aware of the policies especially thinking about the aims and means of such policies. The readings were interesting, some were not that exciting but they were still very informative. Now I feel that I am more conscientious of what is going on in the education system in terms of policies.
The course was very helpful in coming to an understanding of how policy affects what teachers do in the classroom. Would definitely recommend continuing to provide this class for future cohorts.
Thank you for the wonderful insights and the broadening of my horizons on policy in education. I fully enjoyed your class and being your advisee.
This course should remain a permanent fixture in all graduate programs regardless of the focus. If more people understand how education policy is created and how it's implication dictate a lot of the positives and negatives that other education stakeholders, especially teachers, deal with. The most important thing I took away from this class is that I can affect change by the way I approach policy in my own classroom.
This course is one of the fabulous courses offered by EFED. It is relevant and beneficial to my practice.

17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Effective instructor, very understanding and willing to work with students.
They are both great (Oba and Kupferman) individuals! They always come to class happy and teach lively! I liked the practicum check in where you got to hear what we were going through in our practicum. It was a great opportunity for us to get advice and feedback on ourselves and our field placement.

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This course was the first opportunity that I was given to experience the education system specifically in the secondary level. What I've learned about the adolescent's state biologically and academically have given me a more in depth image of what I should be expecting in future semesters while working with students of this age.
Discussing the adolescent mind is a great resource for me. The required readings were very relevant.

As for activities/resources that could improve this course: simply having a larger class would have created an interesting dynamic. The materials that we did use in this course in the form of books, articles and discussion were all useful. Documentaries are also a tool that may work well in this type of course.

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This course helped me to understand how to incorporate Social Studies in my classroom and about teaching for Social Justice. As a future teacher, this class has made me realize that Social Studies is important to teach in the classroom.
Taught me to think outside usual perceptions of justice.
Greater understanding of issues with teaching social studies and gained knowledge of various ways to effectively teach social studies.
This course helped me better understand and create my lesson plan.
Yes, this course helped me to see or achieve a greater understanding of the diversie cultures and people in the world. Personally it gave me a new perspective and educationally it answered questions I previously had but never asked.
I learned that Social Studies IS an important subject that needs more attention in the classroom. Dr. Kupferman taught us many ways to facilitate social and global discussions in our classroom and how doing so, can create successful citizens.
This course really helped me work towards my concentration/major because it really made us critically think about what we are getting ourself into. Each week we were actively participating in discussions that related to teaching and also culturally diverse learners. Overall this course went well.
In addition to fulfilling course requirements, this class has contributed to my personal growth as a student and life long learner in that I evaluate history (and the present) more critically.
Dr. Kupferman used methods to teach our college course that can be translated to methods used in an elementary school classroom. Thus the course provided relevant and useful information for my future professional career.
I learned and also have great resources on methods to use in the classroom.
Melbourne method can be used in future classroom

Great course. Don't change anything.
Nothing!!
I would rather do detailed analysis of one or two books versus skipping chapter to chapter on five books.
Change the class structure up a bit, have some weeks where the whole class works together/discusses a topic. Provide resources of social studies education in action such as movies and narratives (although the books did have some good illustrations). Then as a class we could analyze and identify good and bad strategies being practiced in the subject classroom.
See below #16
Sometimes the directions given were not detailed enough for me, therefore I had questions to ask about the assignment and personally I don't like having to keep asking questions to make sure I get the assignment done correctly.
None. All of the resources used were very helpful and interesting as well.
The only additional resource I would like to see in this course is maybe use of media; possibly included TED talk discussions on historical events.
I think the books could be down sized given the use of it, we did not use all sections of the book. Maybe sending out PDF's through email would be better, but then again there are some issues that might occur with availability of technology.
None.
The Melbourne method can be altered a bit (as we have already talked as a class about) but I really enjoyed learning that way. I would maybe like to see an application or practice some of the methods.
More variation in class activities, other than Melbourne Method

Implement new ideas besides the Melbourne Method. You can do MM, but it ate up too much time.
Perhaps only 6 weeks of the melbourne method, mix up the class structure a bit. I would've enjoyed more lecturing/varied activities led by you rather than just your 10 minute input at the end of every round. I learned a lot either way, it just would have made things less monotonous.
A great thing to improve is the grading of the Melbourne method. The overall activity is a great strategy however, the process can be improved. Question guidelines/structure need to be created and better enforced.
As for the Melbourne method, it was difficult but it pushed me to do my work. The process of this method should have a few twists to it so that ALL the groups are participating. It gave me a new experience into learning.
Have a way to view the grades in one place, like laulima's grade book link
The Melbourne Method was interesting as I have never been a part of this type of teaching style. The amount of books required for this course was a bit overwhelming.
The only suggestions for improving the course is just maybe consider not letting our classmates evaluations go to our grade. Just cause I noticed that some people were having conflict with that. Other than that, this course was really good!
I enjoyed Dr. Kupferman's style of teaching. He presents history in an engaging and educational way.
This course was extremely rigorous and required much more time than the six "contact" hours suggested in the course syllabus. It was a common complaint amongst the classmates that the work and time involved in this class was "killing us."
None!
Do something other than Melbourne Method
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher and speaker. I suggest his classes to others.
Awesome professor! I learned so much in his class by participating in the Melbourne Method discussion. We were able to talk about issues related to Social Studies. I was able to see otherʻs beliefs and opinions and it helped me to understand that Social Studies is indeed important and can be fun and engaging for students.
Fantastic prof.
Great professor, encouraging of students, very knowledgable and really cares about what he teaches.
Awesome instructor. Great to have such an enthusiastic and "alive" instructor at such the time of day. No sleeping at all but just lots of knowledge and good laughs. Highly recommended. Keep up the good work Dr. Dave!
He is a great teacher! Even though there was much to be done, when I was in class, I was having fun (in a way).
He is very organized and knows his subject well! I liked that he always sent emails ahead of time so that we knew exactly what was going to happen in class. He always reminded us of deadlines and treated us fairly. Overall, great professor!
Dr. Kupferman is very knowledgeable in this field. He is easy to talk to and answers your questions promptly.
He is a really good instructor. He knows his content very well and he is always prepared as a professor. He is very helpful and he is always more than willing to suggest improvement if we ask. Overall he is a good and I would recommend him to other students.
Dr. Kupferman is an excellent instructor. In all of my college career, this was the first semester where I looked forward to coming to class.
Kupferman is very knowledgable in Social Studies! Very god professor, shows he cares and answers any questions even if it is off subject.
Dr. Kupferman was a thoroughly enjoyable instructor. He has a quick wit and made the class time interesting and lively. Dr. Kupferman is also extremely knowledgeable about the course topics. The combination of his great sense of humor and his vast knowledge/insight made the class a valuable use of time.
Wonderful! I really enjoy his teaching style. I would like to see him stay in the blocks. I think it would benefit teacher candidates.
Kupferman is great. Made material relevant, understandable, and never talked down to us. Very funny, which made the class enjoyable. Also, very organized, the reminder e-mails were much appreciated.

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very informative.
This course was awesome. I learned so much just by talking about issues related to Social Studies.
Very fun to take, but dragged on a bit there at times.
Interesting course that taught me a lot of things I'll be sure to use in my future teaching, however I would have liked a bit more variation in instruction.
Awesome! I really enjoyed it. Although the class was bigger than other practicum classes it was a instructed and maintained very well.
I had a difficult time but completing the course material given opened my eyes to new views of the world.
It was fun and educational. The Melbourne Method was genius!
It was a challenge but one that was doable as long as you put the time and effort into it.
It was a really good course, required a lot of time and also thinking. But it was a very interesting method we experienced. It was pressuring at times, but it was for our own good. Overall, this course was good!
I really enjoyed taking part in the Melbourne Method this semester. I think it was a great way for us to learn the materials while being an active part of our learning process.
My overall evaluation of this course is two thumbs up. If asked by colleagues questioning whether or not they should take Kupferman's class, I would highly encourage them to do so because, even though the course is challenging, they will enjoy learning.
Very effective course, keeps students on pace and really organized.
Excellent course, but be ready to give up any semblance of a social life--or a clean house, sleep, exercise, etc.
Hard work! But it all pays off!
Favorite class this semester. Would take another course with Kupferman, oh waitttt I am
21. Other comments:
Dr. Kupferman is a great asset to the UHWO education program. He should be included in future semesters. He has a great teacher style. He lets students lead the discussion and has a great flow to the way he teaches.
Good job Doctor Dave!
Mr. David is a great teacher and he helps out by providing weekly reminders. He levels with us so I find it comfortable to speak with him.
It would be nice to have Dr. Kupferman as a professor again.
Thanks!!

Helped to support my knowledge on the importance of diverse learners.
This course impacted my personal views and answered questions in my field of study that I always had or wondered but never asked.
I learned a lot during this course!
The Case Study assignment provided opportunities for me to develop professionally.
This course enhanced my personal and professional development in that I evaluate and interact with more compassion towards culturally and linguistically diverse individuals. I have a greater awareness of the challenges/conflicts others face, and therefore, am able to extend grace more readily.

Awesome activities. There was a video, some lecture classes, a guest speaker and great readings. Not sure what can be added but possibly providing more guest speakers or inspirational videos.
I had fun :)
More examples, modules, and a more clear concise of directions. Rubrics would be helpful, so we know what to hit and what is expected. Directions were very broad. I really liked the weekly e-mails to remind the class what is coming up and what to expect.

See above #5.
It would have helped to have examples of what was expected out of our larger assignments like the case study because it was difficult to know exactly what Dr. Kupferman was looking for in our final product. I was not able to get a clear understanding until much later.
I have nothing to comment to "improve" his teaching methods. During the semester it's alot of work and reading and it's stressful but in the end it's for the better.
The only thing I wish Dr. Kupferman did was give us examples of what he wanted. Sometime, we had to ask a lot of questions because we were unsure of what he wanted. If he had given us examples, we'd know what he was expected or wanted.
None.
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Awesome instructor. Provides great examples, and information. I understand that focusing on diversity is his strength and he teaches it well.
He is a great and understanding teacher. I really liked both classes he taught, he made it interesting and it pushed me to doing my work.
He's definitely passionate about what he does! I liked that he was super organized and emailed us often. This helped me ton stay on track in his class.
Excellent instructor.
My overall evaluation of Dr. Kupferman is I think he is an excellent teacher. Kupferman is passionate about culturally and linguistically diverse students and I think he wants to transfer that passion to those he instructs; that makes him an excellent teacher.

I liked this class better than my other classes.
I like the overall flow of this class. I felt the work was evenly distributed and I also feel like I learned a lot!
This WI was truly an "intense" course.
My overall evaluation of this course is, even though the work load is challenging, it is an excellent course and I enjoyed being a student.

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
I gained a better understanding of identifying and meeting the needs of diverse students.
This course has taught me ways of how to deal with children of diverse cultures. It has also opened my eyes to what is happening around the world with the education of young learners and their diverse cultures, which plays a big role in shaping their education.
This course helped me towards my major because we learned a lot about cultural and linguistic children and what we have to deal with in the classroom. All the information presented to us is very useful because we need to consider all of it when we become teachers.
This course has opened my eyes to the cultural and linguistic diversity of students in the classroom. It has made me also aware of issues many cultures face with sterotyping, acculturation and assimilation to the dominant cultures. I was able to learn about Mexican, Roma, Tongans, Micronesians and about the struggles these cultures faced in life. It really made me aware of my bias towards others and has really helped me to embrace a sensitivity to other cultures. As a future teacher it has made me realize that diversity will take place in my classroom, year after year I will have students from all backgrounds and that itʻs important to create a classroom that is welcoming, caring and equal for all students.
It has opened my eyes up to how I can teach culturally and linguistically diverse students. It has also taught me to be wary of belittling a culture (even if I mean well).
Good course, but much of what we talked about I already learned in Multicultural Education.
Dr. Kupferman has a talent for getting his students to view things differently and to ask critical questions regarding information. He is a great teacher.

Additional introduction of the case study, going over the general sections, conducting research/observations on student and environment etc., and providing examples of good and bad case studies would have helped me a lot in completing that assignment.
I believe more discussions about readings and maybe a little more in class activities.
There are no activities or resources that should be added. This course is fine how it is.

Additional examples with case studies, response papers, etc. Provide opportunities for students to play the role of a teacher in class. Make us analyze a student/classroom environment together to help us in our case study (the film and lesson about Arkansas was good, would have liked more lessons where we pick-apart something).
I think more in class activity's
There is only one suggestion for improving this course. I think you should show an example of a Response Paper and also have a specific rubric on what you want us to include. But other than that this course was fine.
nothing on a big scale. Maybe having guest speakers from cultures we learned about in class such as tongan or mexican speakers to speak about issues they face living here in Hawaii.
Maybe give more concrete expectations? Sometimes we were a little unsure of what you wanted, but you always gave us an answer if we asked!
Create new units besides Micronesian culture/language. It felt like we focused way to much on one ethnic group. I understand your connection to it, but there are other people here who don't receive social justice besides Micronesians. Branch out a bit.
Nothing. Great course. I learned a lot.
It would of been helpful it there were a more in depth guide for the case study to follow
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great, motivative professor who makes class enjoyable and the content interesting. He did a great job in teaching this course for the first time.
He is very knowledgable in Social Studies and shows his students he cares through his teaching styles and concerns for his students.
He is a very good professor. He challenges us for our own good, and he has high expectations for us as well. Which is a good thing because it will only benefit us in the end.
Excellent!!! I would definitely enroll in another class taught by Dr. Kupferman. Learning was fun and engaging. We read books about different cultures, discussed about them and I learend so much through interacting with my classmates. His teaching style was very informating and entertaining. He made jokes that was relevant to the course but funny at the same time. He is very knowledgable about Social Studies and made learning about Social Studies fun and meaningful. Social Studies was viewed as boring to me because it was lecture form and about memorizing dates, people, and events. In Dr.Kupfermanʻs class we talked about issues that were relevant to our lives and the way he taught this course helped us understand Social Studies is more than dates and names.
Great professor! He makes the hard work fun, and approaches it differently then I ever seen!
Excellent! I would love to have him as my Student Teaching mentor!

Great course, learned a lot, however some weeks felt like a lot of work.
GREAT! A lot of useful information and insight on diversity of students
This course was really good. It was a writing intensive and required A LOT of writing. Overall, this course went well.
Awesome. I would take it again if I could. I learned so much about linguistic and cultural diversity. It was mind opening and I learned to respect other peopleʻs cultures and not to judge others. This course helped me to become interested in teaching Social Studies and made me realize that I need to take more courses in Social Studies because I donʻt know that much!
Great experience and can't wait to apply it in the classroom.
Happy with the course and how it turned out.
Great course. I would recommend it.

Great introduction to teaching middle and secondary education. Gives motivation and encouragement to continue onto the program.
this is a wonderful class and is very much needed for anyone thinking about becoming a teacher. It is geared towards secondary education but i feel that anyone going into an education field including elementary school teachers, counselors, princpals, etc need to take this course because there is so much to be learned.

17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He's a really good teacher, I'm sad this semester is ending because his class was my favorite. He makes learning fun and you can tell he really cares about his students. I wish he could teach another Education course because I'd definitely sign up!
great teacher. would take another class from him.
He is a really good teacher, easy to talk to, and knows a lot about the course.
he's okay.
David Kupferman is an EXCELLENT professor! He has so much knowledge in the field and knows exactly how to convey the important class messages to his students. The students are never bored in his class and I really appreciated his sense of organization. Nothing is ever unclear. If I had any questions, I felt comfortable asking him whatever came to mind. He is easygoing and approachable, yet he easily gains the respect of his class because he is knowledgeable in the area he is teaching. I would recommend this professor to anyone. He is one of the best professors I have had throughout my college experience.
