22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
emails students to see if things are going okay such as homework etc.
Encourages students to try their best and offers resources for improving writing, etc.
Initially, Brian and I had a few hiccups regarding his critique of homework. He was listened to my rationale and we exchanged feedback. His ability to listen and understand where the student is coming from is refreshing. I have come to understand his reason for his style of critique. It is not personal but rather for my sake. He emails all of us to ask if we are having problems with an assignment and is available for anyone if needed. I appreciate Masa, too!
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
i really like the class discussion. brian is very intelligent
Like: subject matter and depth of topics, not made to feel inferior if you're familiar with topics, available outside of class for questions and suggestions, great examples of films and writings, very helpful with correcting essays, very flexible with assignments Dislike: unable to keep (a few) students on track with topic discussions, very difficult topics at times
Because Brian is linear in thought, he has a his way of critiquing assignments. This would be my only negative comment.
At the beginning of the course we were given a course out line with assignments. Constantly throughout the course the schedule had to be re written and assignments were changed. There was no consistency in the teaching structure. Throughout the entire course no actual grades were given. The teacher made comments on papers but never actually assigned grades. The teacherĂ¢??s comments were vague and we were marked on things we did not cover in class or in any reading. When students asked for help with a difficult reading he replied that many people don't understand it and perhaps we wouldn't. He did not prepare the students for the writing assignments other than giving vague general guidelines any teacher would have. He had poor time management and the classes would often run over. This is a big problem for a night class where the majority of the people are adults with families and children to get home to. The entire class felt like a bad experiment where every day he would just wing it. He started class asking what we wanted to do and had very few clear goals. Half way through the course an on line survey was given to see how the students felt about having a midterm. He did not respond to the survey in class or via e-mail. This survey was said to be anonymous. The only way to have an anonymous survey with five students in a class is to have it be multiple choice. The survey was essay style and the teacher already had examples of each student's writing style. The class was co-taught by Masahide Kato. Throughout the majority of the course Masahide Kato would provide minor feedback or opinions, mostly staying quiet in the corner working on his computer. When Masahide Kato did teach his first class he went on a completely different course off subject trying to correlate what he had just finished writing his dissertation on with the course. He gave a class on globalization in the world economy and then Jimmy Hendrix. The papers the students were assigned to write could not be more than 699 words. This often made it difficult to cover all the basics when dissecting Plato's Allegory of the cave, Apocalypse Now, and a few other assignments. So when you chose the best points to focus on and not all you were reprimanded in the notes the teacher handed back for not covering everything.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
his class was great..
Great class but I'd rename it "Non-Intro to Politics and Film". I love that the class is co-taught and we see different sides to both politics and film.
Brian is awesome! I love the teaching tandem of Brian and Masa! They make a good team...The Yin and Yang!
Brian Richardson is extremely vague. He idolizes raciest, ethnocentric, sexist thinkers from the past. He will point out their obvious flaws then praise them continually throughout the course for their progressive thinking. He pushes his political propaganda and cuts students off when they try to counter, with a side step of "well let's not get off subject"
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
yes, he makes you look at things in a whole new way. very interesting class and great atmosphere
Absolutely! But I'd let them know that a background in history, philosophy, politics, economics, anthropology, sociology, and psychology is necessary to keep up with the topics of class discussions.
YES! He makes the student think....articulate that thought...and write it coherently. Every student should take his class at some time in their academic career....It is life changing.
I would not recommend Brian Richardson. I was extremely excited going in to this class biased purely on the subject matter. His lack of teaching and clarity made this class something to endure. I dreaded going to class because I felt robbed. I was genuinely interested in the subject matter at hand but felt the teachers used it to push their own propaganda and had no desire to give a level account.

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
By asking questions alot in class.
Gave extension to turn in assignments to students who had computer problems.
His willingness to help and he is always available even on weekends and answers email promtly.
Answering in depth the questions the students had and making sure the students didn't get lost or misunderstood his lectures.
Brian has his finger on the pulse of his students and, if he feels he needs to change tactics or see what students think of his assignments, he stops and asks for input. He is very creative and makes everything so interesting.
Brian made himself availible to every student.Ili
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I like how we had choices on what we wanted to write our essay on. I dislike that discussions in class was sometimes unclear.
His concern for students to understand the course and each lesson.
The range of knowledge the instructor had and how he could combine multi backgrounds of knowledge and info to the study of film and politics.
I appreciate the way all of the assignments tie in together to make our thinking clearer. New doors are opened and it is amazing to see how even our outlooks seem to change.
I loved everything about it.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always gave detailed explanations, offered to give help outside of class hours.
he tries to explain the material better
Brian was amazing in his creativity in making sure that we were able to understand the theories and ideas that he was presenting. When the class changed from evening to morning (after I had done the reading in preparation for the class during the summer)
He tries to make sure we understand the material and our assiggnments
He tries to make sure that the concepts are understood by each student and allows for personal interpretation.
He is very accessible to students through e-mail and of course during class he is always extending his services to fully answer questions and validates each student's responses.
Allows us to meet with him out of class during his office hours, and e-mail him with any questions or concerns.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Class discussions were very enlightening.
n/a
Now that we have almost completed this semester, I can fully understand why he presented each reading and how it relates to all the others. It has made me more aware of political strategies and the influence of the media on everyone.
I liked watching the movies about the 50's and the Atomic bomb
I like the choice of materials and various examples used to express the overall theme of the course.
I liked the book choices and the open ended discussions.
I like all the books we read, because i had never read any of them prior to this class, they are eye-opening and fairly interesting.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Class procedings were much more engaging than most other classes. It was nice to do more than read power point slides for every class.

Brian is very well-rounded and extremely kind and understanding. He presents his assignments so that everyone is able to understand them and makes learning enjoyable.
I really liked him as a instructor.
He is freindly, helpful and has a nice smile.
Maybe if there were a vocabulary list of terms to understand the course as a whole better that would be helpful. All in all though I enjoyed myself and was intellectually stimulated through each class period. I also enjoyed the different resources that w
Good teacher, keeps class interesting, intellegent. very well read!
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, very interesting class.
n/a
Definitely. I have already mentioned Brian Richardson's name to many friends as well as my freshman grandson.
Yes, seems to explain things well and likes the subject. He also brings in movies and music to get us to relate to the subject.
Yes, he has helped me grasp a broader view on the science of politics. He is smart.
Yes I would because I think he is an extremely knowledgeable professor who knows his subject material thoroughly. I enjoyed this class!
If they were interested in Political Science, then yes, ofcourse.
