8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| It gave me the opportunity to speak in front of people. And The most thing I am glad to learn was different types of communication method accordingly to various people. Also, colaborative activity was fun to participate as well as learn before the exam. |
| i could improve my public speacking and presentation skill. |
| how to become good public speaker |
| The important of communication and the different ways to give a good
presentation and speech. |
| I learned to plant both feet firmly on the ground and occasionally move
around when talking. |
| I think learning about people and their habits is the most relatable topic I learned. Emotions and effective communication skills are very important and beneficial as well. |
| Everything was valuable and helpful. I am a Communications major and SP151 really put a lot of
concepts into perspective for me. |
| the general concepts i could apply to the real world. |
| I learned the proper way to speak in front of a group of people. Before, I would get very nervous
when I would have to read aloud a paragraph in English class. Now, I am more confident speaking
and that is a skill I will take with me for the rest of my life. |
| All the concepts of giving speeches and the different principles involved. |
| different fundamentals of basic speech |
| How to write a speech outline. |
| Doing the actual presentations. |
| 2 different kinds of presentations and 2-min speech in front of students.
By taking this class, I can practice and learn pricipals of communication at the same time. |
| Everything was open for discussion and was discussed until everyone understood it |
| The experience speaking in front of a crowd (even if it was rather small, it was a nice baby step). |
| I like that she keeps things interesting, it helps to retain what we're learning. |
| speech outline |
| Helped me become more comfortable with speaking. Also learned a lot about using the floor and
hand gestures to entice the audience. |
| the relaxed speaking environment helped greatly in developing
a conversational tone of speaking because there wasn't a great
fear of NEEDING to sound formal for bigger presentations.
the way impromptu speaking was organized helped a lot in creating
a relaxed environment as well as using a more conversational tone
because of the extemporaneous speaking. |
| Raised the bar of public speaking and interpersonal communication. Dissolved fear of speaking in front of groups. |
| speech practice |
| She was great |
| Learning about things that will help me in life. |
| Our group dynamics, we all supported and helped each other out. |
| Posture when giving your presentation and the hbreaking of bad habits |
| reading the book. |
|
|
9. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| lecture was too fast and hard to catch up... |
| she put too much pressure and lot of homework to do, so it did not seem like 100 level. |
| Too much work in this class and exams are little hard |
| Learning all of the terminology and definitions that I personally felt wasn't
very relevant to the class. |
| All I learned was to plant both feet firmly on the ground and occasionally
move around when talking. The majority of the class, learning about
communication with friends, with co-workers, etc., was nice but I thought the
purpose of the class was to communicate more effectively as a speaker or even
genuinely. And that only comes through practicing speaking and such. All of
the talking and reading about theories and such was nice, but I felt there
was not enough practice for a "skills" class as Miss Koo called it. |
| Nothing |
| I found everything valuable in this course. |
| a lot of terms |
| The lectures, because there was so much info and we went through it so fast I didn't learn anything
in class. I had to go home and memorize the book myself. The assignments didn't really feel
cohesive, they felt kind of just thrown in there. |
| All of the other work and papers that seemed mostly irrelevant. There was too much
unnecessary work. |
| group activity was not helpful for me. that's because I just made questions and got the answers from classmates. |
| The textbook |
| The outlines due alongside the speeches. |
| I guess the way she taught us doesn't really reflect on how our test is given. |
| Some of the textbook material seemed to be of little help/importance. I would rather focus more on
speech performances and writing than the textbook material. |
| bias when it comes to certain students: the favorites and the ones that "would get on her nerves" |
| None. |
| reading the text book does not make you a better speaker. the class should be more focused on giving speeches rather than unimportant material found in the text. |
| Nothing. Everything was helpful. But, the test were hard. |
| I don't like the book work or the finals. The lectures are helpful and the tests should be lecture
based. |
| nothing. everything was valuable and useful |
| the least helpful aspect of this course was the 75 question tests along with the 15 minute blast through each chapter in a single class session that ineffectively was supposed to be our learning and understanding of what knowledge is to be taken away of this class.
along with self evaluations. what is that about. i mean isnt that the instructors job? -isnt it a speech class not a writting intensive course? |

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
|
| Everyone is concentraiting her lecture. Therefore, just making sure that everyone is following and understanding the materials. |
| when she was in a hurry or move on some class acticity, sometime she presented her lecture indeed fast like the way she speech . |
| Give more time between the informational speech and persuasive speech.
Explain more on how she grades (on speech presentations). |
| More speeches. Well one level I understand why the class had exams, I would
have learned far more if I had to give a speech rather than choosing A, B, C,
or D and writing an essay. |
| She needs a better classroom or to be more prepared with presenting her lessons. It was so hard
to keep up with what she was talking about because she only had a small laptop to see the power
points. This made taking notes very difficult. |
| I think the course was taught well. |
| Space out the speeches. Maybe not make the informative and persuasive speechs within a span of two weeks. |
| Exams should directly reflect the way she teaches the concepts in class. I think its because the exam questions are taken from the test banks, that it was difficult. |
| Go through the lectures at a slower pace, don't read off slides as much. REVIEW slides before class
so that no mistakes are made when you're telling the class the info. Make sure assignments are
cohesive with the class. |
| Teaching us more useful material and leaving out the unnecessary information. |
| I think her teaching in class was good and interesting.
But, I think that we have to more chance to presentaion compare to just learning text books about principals. |
| STOP CHANGING THE SYLLABUS! |
| Better explain some of the aspects of the speech, rather than making so much material being forced
at us for the tests. |
| not much really, keep it up the way its going and things will be great.
if anything it would just be the contradicting requirements in the syllabus that need to be fixed; clear examples of the time frame work should be turned in |
| None. |
| shes awesome |
| Give a better study guide for the tests. |
| Have the tests be lecture based. |
| she did a great job actually. |
| for one not tell student that you are going to kick there ass. or call people duche bags. as an instructor we are supposed to emulate you. the time that you use to go over your information is simply not enough and completely rushed! |
|
|
18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| She always e-mailed everytime when we got assignment and specifically explained about the detail, which helped me a lot. |
| impvoved my presentation skill |
| Very clear during her lectures and clear on assignments and due dates. |
| She was bubbly and able to talk story while explaining text materials well. |
| Always very knowledgable. If you needed an answer for something, so always found one for you |
| She was very informative, upbeat, and constantly getting the class to participate. She made it
comfortable for me to give her feedback in class discussions and she was easy to get along with. |
| always willing to help and her email reminders. |
| She is very approachable and is able to explain the subject matter well. |
| Her enthusiasm for the course. This made the class fun and enjoyable. |
| She is very enthusiastic and approachable. |
| Always answered e-mails promptly, very enthusiastic, shared great personal anecdotes. |
| She's laid back where you can talk to her on a more personal level. |
| comments about presentation. |
| She is open minded and patient |
| Michelle's teaching style was informative and yet still entertaining. She found ways to make the
material hit home for the class and encouraged not only knowledge, but fun in the course. I learned
a lot from this class and will be using it throughout life. I appreciated her kind nature, laid back
style, and yet get-things-done personality. She was tough, but fair. She was a great teacher and I
truly wish there were more like her at UH. |
| She was energetic and made the class fun, but with lots of learning as well. |
| She was very easy to talk to. |
| feedback in the impromptus, self-evaluations, and presentations. it helped me greatly to understand what exactly i was doing wrong so that i could improve by the time the next assignments came up. |
| Michelle Koo is very relatable to students, and her strong personality helps effectively communicate to everyone. She is strict, but very clear and open for discussion. By far the most favorable instructor I've had. |
| shes nice |
| Her ability to explain |
| She has humor and you can say what you want without her being offended. Cool and chill professor. |
| The atmosphere she encourages and creates. |
| her lectures, and style of teaching was interesting |
|
|
19. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Her voice is sometimes loud and a little scared... |
| paper homework |
| Her bubbliness did not match the strictness of her grading. |
| Nothing |
| Nothing. |
| I found everything valuable and helpful. |
| Should emphasize more on concepts that would be on the exam |
| A lot of the material we learned seemed unnecessary. I didn't like that there was so much
irrelevant work especially for an introductory class. Too much busy work to pass time. |
| nothing. everything was helpful for me. |
| She can be very sarcastic which is her personality but not a valuable type of personality of someone who is an instructor. |
| It would be nice if she would be a bit more lenient with some of the grading. Sometimes it seemed
to be a bit too harsh. |
| nothing; i'm able to use every aspect of her teachings and the way she taught so that i can apply it to every day situations as well as speaking in front of others. |
| None. |
| nothing shes a good teach |
| Nothing |
| The bookwork |
| everything was helpful |
|
|
20. Other comments:
|
| Thank you Michelle, I enjoyed this class a lot and learned a lot. You are such a passionate teacher. So I will recomend my friends to take this class! Have a good winter vacation! |
| I learned a lot from this class! |
| I would have liked to have an actual professor or someone a little more knowledgeable with
public speaking and communicating. |
| I really enjoyed this class and miss this class.
even though i didn't participated more eagerly, I really liked this class.
Thank you for teaching me and thank you for everything. |
| The way the course is taught (and the textbook) makes simple concepts harder than they actually are |
| It could be a fun course, but some of the grading seemed to be harsh. I would rather have a course
focus more on talking than textbook material. |
| i didn't expect to learn this much from a 151 class. this class went beyond the expectations of what the class had to teach, and i'm glad it did. |
| Please teach the higher level Speech courses! |
| good. |
| Class was fun :) |
| loved the class! |
| thank you michelle. she did a really good job, and i am thinking of taking more speech now. |
