Such a great teacher and so knowledgable about the subject. She is a hard teacher, but pushes her students. Therefore I have worked hard and learned so much from this class.
I liked how you taught by going through PowerPoints, working through class assignments with us and then having us work on homework before assigning quizzes. You do a good job encouraging the class, and I appreciate the extra credit. Best of luck to you!
I believe this course would be a lot more enjoyable if there is an implementation of group discussions during class ie. real life case examples regarding financial reporting issues, ethical conduct, and so forth.
Awesome class. It's tough material but professor Woollen breaks it down.
Professor Woolen does an exceptional job walking students through the processes of accounting. She has a great grasp of learning styles and cognitive development. I feel that could help many other new professors, regardless of subject, with preparation of material and cognitive development of the students. Also she has always been helpful when I have needed her assistance. In my opinion, Shidler college is fortunate to have her on their faculty.
I like the way she teaches.
She is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and easy to understand professor. I loved her class and looked forward to going to class each day. If you go into her office hours, she is very approachable to talk to and encouraging. She is THE best accounting professor I ever had.
Though it is a tough class for me, but I am able to learn more from this class. Thank you.
This was a really challenging course, but it was worth learning from Professor Woollen.
It was a great course. I really learned a lot despite getting a few bad grades after the first midterm. Though I am a little mad I got several bad grades, Mary Woolen really pushed us to master the material or at least master it enough to build more things upon it.
This class makes me really work hard so I have learned a lot and I am interested in accounting more than before. Thanks for teaching.
Excellent Prof. I would recommend her to have an ACC321 class.
Professor Woolen is a great and enthusiastic teacher. She really encourages us to think and analyze instead of just memorize and regurgitate content.
Although, I may have personally did quite poorly in this class, she has taught me something different about accounting. Accounting is not only about memorization of numbers and other formulas and constant painstaking memorization of facts and figures. It is more about knowing what you previously know and building upon that knowledge. I guess maybe it was too late for me to understand that, but hopefully in the next four accounting classes I will be taking, that I will be able to utilize this knowledge and effectively apply it to my future studies.
Best professor I've ever had. I enjoy the class because of professor Woollen. I see no room for improvement. Keep up the amazing work! I wish you taught other classes as to continue learning under you. Thanks for everything!
she is a great teacher. the course is hard but she makes it entertaining and interesting. way better taht my 321 teacher
Most knowledgeable teacher that I've had for Accounting. Straight forward and really makes you think analytically. Would recommend to any student who really wants to be an Accountant.
Great class, learned a ton from Professor Woollen!
Very hard teacher, but worth the work you put into it.
Excellent teacher
Great teacher. Her course is VERY challenging and I felt she does a good job teaching the material--especially on how to do the accounting calculations.
none
Professor Woollen has to be one of my favorite accounting teachers here at Shidler. She is an incredibly awesome teacher, and knows the material extremely well. In a way, I almost feel guilty because I know that had I been a better student, I would have done a lot better. Overall, I really enjoyed Professor Woollen's class, and consider myself to be lucky to have her for Accounting 401 this semester as well. The course material is challenging, but she is an incredible teacher and does an amazing job teaching. Much aloha Professor Woollen! Surf is up this summer! :)
This was a difficult course because of the vast amount of information that needed to be presented. I truly appreciate Prof Woollen's enthusiasm and desire to communicate the information to the class. My recommendations would be to use examples in class that were not in the book. When I was confused about an example (or was looking for one that was slightly different), it was not helpful to go to refer to the book and have no other options since it was the same example from class. The second test was long for the allotted time. I think the stress of trying to finish also caused students to make mistakes where they may not have if they had more time. I liked the handouts and the in class problems. They were very helpful in reinforcing the information.
She's very thorough and actually cares about students. She is fair.
Mary Woolen possessed a great deal of knowledge in this difficult accounting course. The content for this course is vast and it's really difficult for the students to be organized. However, she was able to make things easy for us by preparing the slides and other handouts many days in advance. The exams are very difficult, but if the student puts a lot of his/her effort, then it's possible to do well in the class. She is a great teacher, but tremendously difficult to get an A. If a student has a strong interest in learning a lot and is willing to put in the extra effort, then taking from Mary Woolen is my recommendation. The faculty is blessed to have her as a teacher.
Should make the mid terms questions like the quiz. Mid term questions were hard to understand.
The course content should be broken up more into smaller sections. The amount of material to learn for the tests were sometimes too much. Her examples from class were straight from the book. The homework problems were very similar to the book & in class problems but the test material took everything one step further-which is very tough to do for multiple chapters within a short amount of time. Her quizzes were easy compared to the tests. Maybe she should challenge us on her quizzes and homework so that we are more prepared for the test. I don't like that one test grade can take me from an A to a B-. If everyone did bad on a test, it is obviously a fault on the teaching side and not the learning side.
She is the best ;)
Class is very straightforward. It was very difficult and I learned a lot, but to have an exam with an average of 60% in a major accounting course should say something. Grading is very harsh in class and somewhat counterproductive in terms of efforts that the students put forth.
Great teacher. I learned a lot.
Professor Woollen is and has been an excellent teacher. I wish all the teachers at Shidler would engage in teaching the way she does. She makes me want to learn
This class is the most clearly outlined and structured courses I have taken at UH. Grades are distributed fairly with no favoritism and bias. The structure is rigid and the adequate reminders of upcoming assignments and quizzes are given. Overall this was an excellent course and Professor Woollen is an extremely qualified instructor.
The material was difficult, but the way it was taught made it easier to understand. Thank you.
Maybe I did not study enough... Sorry... But those journal entries are easy to be mixed up...Thank you for putting so much effort on us!
I like her presentations in ppt and will suggest she takes the 2nd midterm exam before spring break and with 3 chapters. Maybe one extra quiz will help us to improve our grades and learn more.
I may not be getting the best grade in the class or completely understand every single bit of the material taught, but Woollen is by far one of my favorite instructors. She is very enthusiastic about accounting, which is generally not the most interesting subject, so her enthusiasm makes me want to learn and try harder in the class. Whenever I encounter any problems, whether it be related to the course or health problems, she is always very understanding and willing to help during office hours or accommodate if I miss a class. While the course itself may not be in my top 10, Professor Woollen definitely is.
She explains all content and materials clearly to students. She makes the materials much easier to understand, if you don't get it the first time, try go through again, you will have a 80% chance in understanding. She is a great professor.
Professor Woollen is hands down the best accounting professor at Manoa. She is extremely knowledgeable and teaches in a manner that is simple to understand and practical for real world applications.

Professor Woollen is by far the best accounting teacher here at Shidler. She is incredibly intelligent, clear, and overall a fantastic instructor. I have definitely learned a lot from her in this federal individual income taxation course. A lot of my friends had told me at the beginning of the semester to drop her course, but I knew that if I did I would not have learned as much as I did in Professor Woollen's class. Overall, she is an excellent teacher. Much aloha Professor Woollen! Surf is up this summer! :)
Professor Woollen explains the materials clearly. If you want to understand the tax material, I strongly recommend that you take her class! ;)
Though a lot of the topics covered are very difficult, they are thoroughly explained by the professor.
she is a great teacher
Mary Woollen is a great professor and holds a high standard for the students. The expectations for the students are set high, but are fair and achievable.
Professor Woollen is very knowledgeable about the subject and is effective in communicating and sharing this knowledge as well as her passion toward taxation. She makes it easy to learn an otherwise boring and tedious subject. The semester is not yet done, but so far I have a renewed appreciation for individual federal taxation :-)
I was very fortunate to learn from Professor Woollen.
Loved her teaching style. She plays favoritism though and it shows in how she answers her students' questions. While she is knowledgeable in the subject matter that made it hard to ask her questions. This was a beginner course into tax so students wouldn't know the exact terms to use when asking a question. She would stop students and analyze every word used in the question which made it hard to ask anything because we needed to be specific if we wanted a specific answer. (Interchangeable words and phrases in everyday language made this hard to ask her anything without her referring to the actual meaning of words that we didn't mean to refer to)
A great teacher. I learned a lot.
She is a great teacher and the university is blessed to have her.
Great class. Great instructor. I learned a lot from her.
Course was organized very well and I knew exactly what was due and when. While the work load was tough at times, I will say that I learned a lot of new information about tax. I liked the layout of the course, especially how the writing assignments were little parts that combined into one big piece. The assignments forced me to keep up with the material, which I appreciated. Some courses allow you to fall behind until the last minute if you don't keep up with the work. I also liked the buffer built into the quiz, HW, and attendance points. I only wish that the exam grades were curved, especially since the class average was so low. Either that or offer more extra credit opportunities.
She is a great professor. She knows how to teach !!!!
Mary Woollen is an excellent teacher. Her course is tough and there is a lot of work. But if you start early and stay on top of things, you can succeed in her course. She is a very clear speaker and you can easily understand her. Her teaching skills are very refined and she is very organized. I love that she is an interesting person and not the typical boring accounting professor. I heard her 401 class is harder than the other teacher, but I'm glad I took her class. If she taught another class in accounting, I would definitely take that course. She is easy to talk to and is easily available if you need help. I also like that she knows what she wants and expects from students. She is very exact and never vague on instructions. I was very fortunate to have her as my professor this semester.
Professor Woollen is a fantastic teacher. I've learned a lot from her. I wish she would teach more accounting classes because she is such a great professor. Or at least get her to teach ACC 321. She would be able to really weed out the future accountants early on in students' academic careers. It would be beneficial to students to know whether or not they are cut out for accounting, both academically and financially.
I really learned a lot in this class and I really enjoyed it. It not only helped me in real life doing tax returns but also pushed me to think about tax accounting as a job. While I feel the material was a little too hard, I am glad we were pushed otherwise we might not understand everything.
Being your student has been one of the best experience I have had as a student at UH manoa. I really like your approach to teaching the material. What I liked most is how organized your class is in terms of slides, class pratices, and other materials. I strongly encourage you to teach more here at UH becasue you have so muhc to offer us students. Thanks again for the wonderful semester.
It's hard to make taxes fun, but Professor Wollen does a very good job at making the experience enjoyable. Both classes I have taken by the Professor leave me feeling very accomplished and confident on all subject covered. Thanks!
