9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
More interactive homework for quizzes and I think I would learn more if this was available as a regular, on-campus class than just an online one.
overall the course was well put together, althouth it was hard to keep up with the material because this corse was solely online. but overall it was a very educational course.
This is an online course. Not sure if improvement is warrented.
I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was not on-line. Even with discussion capabilities, we could have done a lot more interacting in a classroom setting. Maybe, more instruction at the beginning and less at the end. Everything seemed so rushed toward the end.
His instruction of due dates quizzes were sometimes not clear. For example, "You will have until next Tuesday, Nov 6..." and Nov. 6th was not Tuesday; it was Wednesday. He had misspelled words in his presentations... He could use spell check before he post announcements?!

Kumu, does speak with authority on the subject matter and seems well versed in it as well. He always goes the extra mile in providing a lot of clarity in his response to students and classes questions whenever it does come up.His demeanor when teaching is pleasant and this in itself creates an atmosphere that is conducive to encourage and nurture students interest and curiousity.
nothing
He works very hard and I can't imagine suggesting improvements to someone who already works far beyond the call of duty.
This was my first online course and once I got used to it I thought he did a very good job clearly outlining the material with quizzes along the way. Sometimes it was hard to remember each assignment or when they were posted because we never had a class in-person, so it was easy to forget that an assignment was posted on Laulima. This was sometimes frustrating but it was mostly due to the fact that I had never taken an online course before and so I had to remind myself more to check the assignments online more frequently.
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I like the material and the way it's organized.
the information on the many different styles of hawaiian music. the whole course out look was great.
Enough information on various subjects were discussed, with many examples. This was good as it allowed time to review, if necessary before taking quiz. Also, it allowed for more subjects to be covered, and if I choose to learn something more in depth, I can do so at my own convenience.
Learning more about the instruments and chant styles. I've listened to them for many years but not had the understanding that I can bring to it now.
His online presentations were very clear, and easy to understand!
that it was online
His genuine compassion for the subject matter shows out in his delivery and his enthusiasm while interacting with the class. Very helpful in all areas in wanting to see everyone succeed! His diligence and commitment to higher learning is evident in every measure of his being.
All Good!
Lectures were interesting. I liked that the class was online.
learning the differences in the music instruments and its history and arrivel to Hawaii
Well organized academically and administratively
Kumu's genuine love for Hawaiian music as well as his expertise really came through as we learned.
The lectures were every interesting and the mp3s library so we could listen to the examples.
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It's very interesting just need more assignments not quizzes :D
good for all to take and be educated espicially when we live in hawaii
Good course; interesting subject matter; good information.
Very informative and thought-provoking.Kumu Donaghy truly loves his field and it shows in his presentations and discussions. He also has a lot of patience for so many different personalities.
I learned a lot from him. I was a great class!

Great in every aspect of the subject matter! He reaches out to all of the students who may be lagging a bit behind, through encouragement, has a can do attitude, is very flexible with his students and provides a lot of assistance through his one on one counseling should we need it. But more important, just a great atmosphere for higher learning and willingly wanting to simply participate.
Excellent
Very good course
awesome
Very well done. Could be way worse.
great
12. Other comments:
Thanks for all the time you put in these classes.
Great course! I'm semi computer illiterate and yet he made it fun and interesting.
I thought he was too nice where he gave many chances to students who missed due dates. It is not so fair for the students who worked hard to meet the due dates. But I really enjoy the class!! He is a great teacher.

I believe that the "Institute of Hawaiian" will be a corner stone and foundation for future generations of new, and talented musicians, now being raised up across Hawaii!, and whom ever is delegated to teaching the course must also inspire, be full of compassion, genuinely committed to going over and beyond the threshold of simply teaching. It's got to be a desire and a life style!
Mahalo nui loa!
Good job!
good learning tools and very good information
Just up to me to do the work :-)

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Kumu encourages interaction with the haumana but, I think he needs to set the standard within the first week of class. I thought some haumana were disrespectful, some thought they knew more than Kumu, and maybe they did, but Kumu is still the Kumu. Once it settled down a bit, class was more enjoyable and more haumana had opportunity to share.
I think he did a good job dealing with all of the students who had VERY different levels of music education. this was challenging for everyone in the beginning, trying to figure out how to all get on the same page, but I think the teacher did a great job on the academic and interpersonal level. Some more advanced musically educated players might have been disappointed by how slow the beginners had to learn but the professor gave them a chance to formally share their knowledge and make everyone feel like they had a part in the class.
More hands on with rhythm, less student teaching. I'm not opposed to everyone sharing information and suggestions, but certain people don't need to be encouraged in sharing since they apparently know a lot about music theory, which makes me wonder why they took the class. It made it hard for some students to share and ask questions.

Don't see any reason to improve upon subject matter.
starting with the basics are good but at time i thought he expected us to know what he was talking about, even if we had no clue what was going on. having very knowledgeable students and some not so educated in music was hard for him to find a balance in the middle. which is understandable and i did say he was always willing to help outside of class.
More instruction at the beginning tapering off towards the end. (a little overwhelming) Possibly find better text books for the course. (maybe write his own) The two books that we used were not as useful in the present format and yet, they were expensive. I felt a book actually written for the use in this class would have been much more helpful.
Can't imagine how it could be improved.
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Although difficult, I liked the detailed theory aspects which help me to figure out chords, harmonize, and maybe one day compose.
singing together
I really liked the technical theoretical knowledge being taught in a way that was very hands on and practical for my own uses. I am very glad the teacher took a "working musicians approach" to teaching the theory. This will better serve me in my musical career. It already has helped me.
Using Hawaiian music examples instead of "western" music examples and using guitar, bass and ukulele for sound samples instead of piano.

to be honest i was lost.
Learning chord structure and easy ways to transpose.
Organized
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very helpful introduction to music theory.
Great! I actually learned many new things that made sense.
I wish we had another continuing course like this one in the IHM, I found it extremely helpful
Awesome!
n/a
it was ok
The class was very informative and Joseph Donaghy managed to keep us all in line and learning even when we were not so easy to deal with. Because this class is primarily for the IHM program, he was dealing with many performer "types" who can be a little difficult. He led the way like a great conductor while still letting us have our "heads" a little.
Very good

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think we should have more small performances in the TV filming room...throughout the semester. Like have one small group perform their set every week, rotating between the groups so that more of us get into "stage-mode" more regularly. I think it makes everybody's performances better to have to have a smaller deadlines more regularly
Same situation as with 180. But once Kumu reigned everyone in, all went well.
this course was great for the program that we are in. time to go over other classes as well as giving us all time to prepare and handle bussiness about the IHM program.
I don't recall having a syllabus for this class, so I am not clear in my understanding of the course goals.

Don't see any reason to improve upon subject matter!
Can't think of a thing to change.
No ka Oi.
bring in more mentors
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Kumu's thorough and extensive knowledge, coupled with genuine humility. No intellectual arrogance here - which is a real turn off for me.
learning other peoples songs and the teachers attention to detail on our olelo so that we know we are singing the songs correctly I also really liked our guest speakers. I wish we had more! The invitation to go to outside performances like Uncle George's Slack Key Show was cool. More of that too!
singing together.
when the mentors came in to talk to us. we learned alot
The guests who came to share their experience and knowledge.
my favorite class of the semester
The interaction, participation, commadre, singing, and performing! Oh almost forgot, the pa'ina.
Meeting other musicians and practice time.
Great communication by teacher. Always helpful.
mentor talks
Being able to share music with other students really allowed me to grow not only as a singer but a guitar and ukulele player.
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
it was good. I have never been in a class like this. I think Keola did a good job handling all the personalities and performers. It seems like he paid equal attention to everyone's songs and offered suggestions as to how to improve their performances and olelo. I know I feel more confident after he evaluates my song that my Hawaiian is clear and that I am pronouncing correctly.
Great! I'm able to express myself, and I met facinating personalities in the music world.
great fit for the IHM program

I rate this class quite high! This is the fruit and by-product of our efforts and this being only the first semester, with three still remaining, the thought and possibilities are just now beginning with no end insight!
For the IHM, this is the ultimate! For anyone trying to become a musician or any kind of entertainer, this is great. I felt like I was learning and having a party all at the same time.
Awesome.
Excellent!
Great course!!! Very helpful in hoaning performing skills
12. Other comments:
we need more of these clases for the program
I wish all classes were like this one
I want to extend a deep and genuine mahalo to kumu, for bringing us all to this point in our endeavors! and I'm looking forward to spring.
Excellent work! The semester went by too fast! Time flies when you're having fun and leaning tons!!

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
If the material had a little more visuals and audio examples it would be a little easier to understand the concepts. Spending so much time on the "old days" got boring. It's obviously part of the course, but it's hard to related to something we have no examples or "proof" other than what is written or has been verbally passed down. Spending more time on the eras that really influenced the music we know today would hold our interest a little better I think.
While I realize the instructor probably doesn't want to repeat himself, I think it's unfair to have to wait for chronically late students to start class (not the instructor's fault). Maybe having points deducted for always being late?
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The class discussion and exploration of interesting rabbit holes that lay beneath the surface of the overall music. The visual examples and watching videos really helped the material sink in. If instead of letting class out early, that time was spent doing something "easy" like watching a video I think the concepts of the day would be solidified better.
I like discussions about the various topics, I believe that we can all learn from each other and open class discussions help with that.
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Good, but a little long winded in some areas.
Excellent class.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Kinda of short with some students while encouraging to others (kind of hit or miss) so I wouldn't want to ask anything because of this. Talks about his ADD, but is that an excuse for anyone to not be able to interact with class?
Considering this is his first semester here and he had to become our professor at the last minute, he did well catching us up.
More organization and material that fits the level of the course. It seemed like an upper level course for the first few months of class.
He can improve the teaching of this course by being a bit more organized with the due dates of assignments and exams.
The class was horribly unorganized. Deadlines were rarely ever made clear. Material to be covered on quizzes was never made clear. In fact, I am in the midst of writing my final paper at this very moment, and I feel at a loss. The guidelines for this assignment were never made clear. He expects us to "use what we've learned during the semester" to efficiently write a paper that is "more than reflective", but I can honestly say, that I haven't learned anything that applies. The course outline changed frequently during the semester. At one point in the beginning, Keola decided to have groups present the material throughout the semester, which really seemed like he was trying to get out of teaching the material himself, and then present on the same material to "make sure they didn't miss anything". If that isn't undermining enough, he even did his presentation on one group BEFORE they did theirs, which was totally uncalled for and disrespectful to that group.
Have the department chair select a different textbook. Too ridiculously expensive and too heady for this 100-level course. A dose of reality-- we could have learned more from using YouTube clips and audio samples off the Internet than from the very expensive CDs. Then everyone in the class would have had access to the material, not just those who could afford to pay for even the overpriced USED copies. Totally bogus. While we're being frank, I did NOT enjoy being required to read "The Unnatural Act." Full of offensive material which did not shed light on a world culture that I was not already familiar with. Puh-leeze. As extra credit, maybe. But to be required to read the book just because the department chair wrote it? No thanks, Skeet.
I thought the group presentations in general were kind of weak. I found that I learned a lot more when Keola himself did a presentation. Just to have his consistency and experience got the material across a lot better.
None.
Becoming more familiar with the textbook and material for next semester.
it seemed so complicating
Don't really have any.
Not sure.
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
the Polynesian culture/ instrument lectures.
everything.
Very knowledgeabke.
I liked how laulima was a good source for this course. It was used to inform us of everything and it really helped me.
I enjoyed listening to the different cultural music.
Being given the opportunity to present information on a certain aspect of music from another culture.
I enjoyed best the videos of the other cultures that were portrayed throughout the semester.
I liked that Dr. Bob was able to come teach for a few sessions, and I enjoyed reading his book.
The Listening samples and video clips, they really gave you the "experience" of the world culture music you were studying. Instructor's in-depth knowledge of the topic was a definite bonus, he really knows his stuff, but never made us feel intimidated or less-than. Very humble guy, and fun instructor. My favorite class this semester.
I like listening to the different music. It was my first time being exposed to different music of the different cultures. It was really interesting.
The chance to examine the cultural thoughts behind each location's music. It would be cool to see real instruments from each place.
I enjoyed learning about music from around the world. Breaking down into individual groups to teach a chapter I thought was innovative and helps each student take initiative in his/her learning.
Having actual videos/ examples of the music & cultures we were learning about.
Learnign about the different types of music that I had mistaken for as noise.
Learning about the music of different cultures.A=
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...
this course wasn't as interesting as i thought it was going to be. Dr. Keola has an intelligence in the Hawaiian aspect of music, so i think there should be more courses in Hawaiian music where Dr. Keola can teach in. As for Dr. Bob i think his music classes should be cut down to a minimum amount of classes that he can handle teaching because he's good with the other music/ cultural aspects around the world.
Great guy and teacher overall.
Could be better, but OK.
It went pretty well.
Its a great class and I have learned a lot on music the teacher makes the courses interesting by providing videos, music, and the back ground of people. The teacher is always there to assist the students and has a great teaching method.
I didn't have a musical background and felt lost at times with the technical information concerning musical notes. At times, it seemed as if I was in an upper level course for a music major. I am sure with experience, Professor Donaghy will improve in his teaching style greatly. He is extremely passionate about Hawaiian music and it shows. I think he would be an excellent Hawaiian culture/music instructor.
that it was a good course and I learned some musical aspects of other cultures that I would have probably never have thought of.
The course itself was designed well, and it would have been a great class if not for Keola delegating his teaching responsibilities to the students.
Has a lot of potential to be an excellent, gotta-take-it course. Keep the instructor, change the required texts.
This course was really interesting even though there were more emphasis on the Hawaiian music. I thought that was okay though because we live in Hawaii and I enjoyed learning about the music.
A little slow, but easy and informative.
It was very informative and educational.
I think he is a caring person. He wants his students to be successful.
There was a lot of material to be covered in this class & needs to be organized well so that most of it can be covered.
A+.

Thank you for everything.
Some people may not have liked the class because of how unorganized it was in the beginning but he was placed there at the last minute. I have to say he put things together pretty well considering how he got sick and had business trips to take care of. He was there when we needed him outside of class and he was fair with everyone.
Thank you for understanding and helping us out!
Keola is a great teacher but if he taught a course on Hawaiian music instead of world music.
Keola seemed to genuinely dislike having to teach the course and had quite a few days where he snapped or let class out early because he was feeling sick. He is very knowledgeable in Hawaiian music and studies, which was interesting, but also distracting from the course.
Mahalo for providing the opportunity for feedback.
None.
Keola is obviously very knowledgable in ethnomusicology. Combining this with familiarity of the course material will make it a very interesting class if done so passionately.
Very Informative about music I never heard before.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
There has nothing wrong about his teaching.... He is very open minded to other very strongly to the student and always giving better in-vice what we have to work on,but I respect him alot with his hard work.....
Help some of the students get better guitars etc.
I assume this one is for Joel even though it says Keola's name. Joel is a bit scattered. I found that I was unsure of what assignments I was supposed to turn in because it was always a little undefined. Doing roll call too would probably get a more consistent idea of who was in attendance instead of the sign-in sheet coming out ever few weeks and us having to remember what dates we missed or not.
10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
((((Music Mentor Classes)))He had been a big help to his student alot...He cares about the student... All I could say about that He want to see his student to see there Goal,Future,Dream to happen its way How I feel for what He wants from out of us as a college student. Even though we have to push are limits to our-self but its not a easy-task
Learning Hawai'in songs and playing with the other students.
Just watching Joel run the programs and set stuff up. He is very good as an engineer and I would have learned a lot even if he didn't explain things.
11. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Great. My favorite class, but for some who are more beginners, I think Joel's unorganized teaching style went over their heads.
