| Professor Kanuha is an exceptional professor who not only is well versed in her field, but also has a remarkable ability to relate to her students as well as delivering the course material in an effective and fluid manner. It is a rarity to find an instructor like Professor Kanuha who is so devoted and available to her students both through scheduled class time and through e-mail, her fairness to students when it comes to a full schedule or personal matters is truly admirable. |
| What I liked about this course, taught by Dr. Kanuha, is that she made Soc100 very fun. I really liked the "Henslin" textbook that she selected for our studies. I also liked how Dr. Kanuha incorporated Hawaiian and local values into the subject of some of the chapters in the Henslin textbook. What I really liked about this course is that Dr. Kanuha gave us plenty (PLENTY!) of opportunities to get 10 extra credit points. Heck, she only made the midterm exam out of 25 points, despite there being 30 questions for the midterm exam. Overall, I would rate Dr Kanuha to be an excellent instructor for this Sociology 100 course.
On the other hand, what I did not like about this course is that some of the subjects in the lecture were too "politically correct," so to speak. There were also some time where Dr Kanuha seemed to be persuading us to be pro-same-sex marriage (due to her sexual orientation), and some of our stance varied on this "touchy" subject. Lastly, I wish Dr. Kanuha would lecture for all her classes! I know she has conferences to attend on the mainland, but she does a great job of getting her knowledge into my head, w/ her well-worded lectures! ;) |
| very talkative teacher.. nice class atmosphere.. |
| the powerpoints are pretty boring, seeing it comes straight from the text. soemthing needs to be done so that we can interact more with each other, since it is a sociology class. it would be cool if we could do exercises in class where the concepts could be used and applied so that we can better understand them. the tests are good, the study guides are helpful for prep for the tests. i don't like the papers we have to write. i also dont like the online homework quizzes. thanks for the extra credit opportunities, but I just really don't like the papers. too little points for that much writing. maybe those papers could be made into extra credit instead. she's a good teacher though, she tries to relate concepts to the students so that we can understand it better. |
| She is very helpful in giving extensions because she knows that being a college student is difficult
for some. |
| The instructor was knowledgable on the material and made the lectures very interesting. However, I felt that the large enrollment aspect of the course weakened its quality. Also, even though the text chosen wasn't bad, the chapter tests given online by the textbook publisher had a number of errors. |
| None. |
| For a 100-level class, with over 150 students, doing a 6-8 page research
assignment was too much. |
| Thankyou for the wonderful semester.

| Really good teacher. Very understanding and very flexible for everyone. Overall, the class was well done. |
| Kanuha is a great lecturer. it was disapointing to show up and constantly have the TA lecturing. She was smart and capable but Kanuha has a passion that was entertaining and engaging. When she was there lectures were interesting. Would have liked more outside of class work; small assignments. Not all of us are good testers and with only a couple of papers it makes it hard to prove we do know what we are doing. |
| Only complaint are the assignments/ work amount. Work is a bit excessive for an introductory
level class. I think that the research project is unnecessary. It too much extra work, and it is a
somewhat difficult for a 100 level class. As far as the online quizzes go, they are time
consuming, and sometimes the corrects answers are marked incorrect, or there are other
technical problems. But their not too bad, alongside the papers. Maybe just the research
project should go, or be replaced. |
| interesting subject with a helpful instructor |
| It was difficult on me as a student when Dr. Kanuha was not always present in class. She was a good professor and the TA Rinda was also able to communicate the topics well. I learned equal amounts from the two when each of them lectured; however, the switching between teachers was difficult because some material was covered more extensively than others.
I was not appreciative of the use of homosexuality and same-sex marriage throughout the course. I was uncomfortable with the amount that the topic took in the class. I also was frustrated because we were required to complete a research project of our choosing, yet the topic was restricted to public views of same-sex marriage. It was very unfair to the students to concentrate the course on same-sex marriage so frequently, and it was not beneficial to me. I have absolutely no interest in the topic, so when I was required to complete a research project worth a significant part of my grade on a topic I did (and still do) not have interest in was difficult, and resulted in a lower effort I was willing to put towards the project. i can only imagine that that alone decreased my grade in the course.
Dr. Kanuha and Rinda Yamashiro are great at teaching. The concentration on homosexuality and same-sex marriage was NOT beneficial for me by any means. |
| Valli Kanuha made this class very enjoyable by really encouraging class participation and making her
lectures fun and interesting making me want to listen to them. I really enjoyed taking this class. |
| Content in the tests is way harder than the content that is actually taught. |
| Great professor. Fair, funny, and knowledgeable. Made me want to take more Soc classes. (: |
| I thought that this professor did a great job of making class fun and interesting. |
| Kalei is a wonderful teacher. She makes it really easy to understand her powerpoints. I am greatful to her for all she has taught us this semester. |
| You both were a really good teachers. I learned so much from both of you and have taken an interest
in the field of sociology. Definitely my favorite class of the semester! |
| Lectures are helpful. Uses examples to help us understand the concepts. |
| Her knowledge of the subject was great and she was able to engage the class by giving true life examples. The chapter exams require more effort than necessary because her lectures were way more informative than the book; and the chapter exams were verbatim and you didnt really learn from them. The assignments really made you think outside of the box and address issues that really are important today. Her goal was to teach us the sociological perspectives, and I think everyone had a good sense of that and are able to really be skeptics of certain things, as well as be a little more sensitive to other controversial topics. It was a VERY interesting class, and I'd recommend her to anyone. Quite a bit of work, but the extra credit opportunities make up for it. She should stress students to keep track of their EC points because it can get confusing in the end. Overall. A+ for Dr. Kanuha |

| You are the best teacher I have ever had, I highly enjoyed coming to class everyday. :) |
| The only thing is that this class is only a few pages short from a writing intensive class, too much writing for an intro SOC class I think. Reflections are fine but research paper?? come on, I don't think that's necessary for an intro class.
Lectures are very interesting and bonus points are much appreciated! I was bored when the TA took over the lecture though, even tho she knew what she was talking about, she just wasn't as entertaining as Kanuha. |
| Loved Kanuha. Gained insight that I would not have reached on my own. Shows interest and love for
what she is teaching, which makes the learning experience for the student better. Loved how she
always came in with high energy and set the mood for the class. One of the best instructors I have
had thus far. |
| I really enjoyed this course overall! |
| I really enjoyed this class because although it was a 100 level course, she went into detail on some
topics. I also liked the connection she is able to make between the material we are learning in class
and Hawaii, I think many classes should do this because it helps to make a connection between what
we learn in class and what is really happening.
What I also thought was interesting was that Rinda was allowed to teach lectures, although this
started off rocky it went pretty well and towards the end of the semester she got into the groove of
lecturing and was able to effectively communicate topics learned in class. |
| Thank u for teaching me this semester!!! |
| Great class, would have enjoyed it more if Professor Kanuha were more available outside of class and lectured more though. |
| I really thought it was very beneficial to look at the sociology world in a local perspective as opposed to just seeing things the in the mainland way. I thought it really helped me to better grasp and understand the material better because I can relate to these concepts. Kalei was always prepared with lectures and also provided the lecture slides online so students could follow along if they missed a class. |
| I strongly appreciate Professor Kanuha's understanding of the subject, as well as her ability to relate
to the students and our needs. I would definitely look forward to taking another course instructed
by Professor Kanuha. |
| The TA was really nice and helpful outside of class and for questions but wasn't very effective when
teaching class. It seems like Valli Kanuha was out of class alot and instead of canceling the TA
taught. Kanuha was sick alot so I don't think she is usually absent from class that much. She's really
good at describing hard to grasp concepts. I also like that she doesn't take attendance because she
lets us be responsible for ourselves. |
| Dr. Kahuna was a amazing professor!! |
| Professor kanuha was an awesome professor because she was very thorough with the lectures and always tried her best to engage with the other students in class. She is also nice and very understanding when it came to being absent in class. I would totally recommend this class to any student whether the person is or isn't majoring in sociology. |
| I just hope that the last written assignment were not given as a reasearch project. It is long and i am not too sure of what to do well i have an idea but not too sure.
Although the textbook is easy to read but the chapter test is kind of tricky at times. The chapter is kind of long. Since there is 16 weeks of school and we have to read like at least one chapter per week. therefore many people need to cram at the end of the semester to finish the chapter test. I wish the web will let us review the test so we can use it to study for the test but thats not the way the site was design. We can only view it right after the test only and once we exist we can no longer view the test again. Maybe a few chapter should have a due date to keep the student in track of the reading like 4 out of the 10 chapter.
I wish there were 15 point of extra credit given because people like me are not a good test taker. The short written assignment are fun and we get to express our view.
The class is easy and fun to attend for most of the time. The professor's way of lecture is very interactive and the example given can be easily relate to our everyday life. I hope there are more professor like you in the university. |
| I felt like this class was a writing intensive class. She gave out too much writing assignments. The
professor seemed to be very enthusiastic about the subject and she made the class fun because she
was funny. |
| 3 reaction papers + a 6 page research paper + 15 online chapter exams which questions
barley
Relate to the subject material covered in the chapter. + a midterm test and a final test.
Sounds like a bit much for an intro 100 level class dont you think? |
| Overall, the class was very enjoyable. the way information was delivered through the lectures made the class flow smoothly. being able to give examples of things whether they be personal examples or not always helps one picture things a little more clearly...or at least in my opinion it does. just a note to those who do take it...that if you constantly keep up if not a little ahead of the class, it should be an easy 'A' class. especially when you have the opportunity for extra credit. the class and work doesn't ask for much out of the student except a little devotion of their time. also, the way the professors sees the class as far as their attitude. you can go to class if you choose, that's your choice. she doesn't hesitate to fail any one person if they break the rules. i wouldn't see a reason to want to cheat or do anything to result in her failing you since the class is quite straight forward. good class to take and great professor. i would rec taking a class from her. Thanks Kanuha. |
| Lots of opportunities to earn bonus points |
| Loved the course. i marked disagree for her access after class because when class ended she would
usually rush out after class making it hard to ask her questions unless we looked for her later in the
day |
| You were so great, I really enjoyed your class this semester. You made me feel like you cared about
each of us individually and wanted us to succeed. This mean a lot when you live in a world where
professors really don't care anymore. Thank you for EVERYTHING!
PS- Rinda was GREAT as well... both super helpful |
| Although she assigns work, it's all online and it saves paper, ink, and money, which made it convenient for me this particular semester. The exam material and style were all appropriate as that it can be finished within the short 50 minute class; multiple choice is the best. The one thing that I was extremely grateful for was her generosity with extra credit points despite not needing to be. She provided many opportunities to gain them and they are helpful to boost grades if one misses an assignment or did poorly on one.
The unit mastery assignment structure was also stress-relieving. Unlike other online courses, I could go at my own pace and not worry about submitting them online on time and was especially helpful when I had tests to study for or important assignments due that particular week. Powerpoint lectures are easy to follow and are posted online in case we missed anything or the day.
Professor Kanuha is a great SOC 100 prof. and she teaches it rather well. She thinks of the students and appreciates and considers our inputs as we may openly or privately discuss them on possible assignments, exams, and extra credit work. This is important thing to think about because professors are so focused on getting the course material out to students as quickly as possible that they forget to ensure that the students are actually retaining said material. She can be funny at times referencing sociological concepts through current trends and news and personal stories.
Her class as I have seen it doesn't need any improvement because her teaching style matched my learning style. There are and will be more students who are like me and/or have similar situations. Even for those whose teaching styles differ, it will be difficult to assert that her class isn't overall "agreeable." However, the BUSAD computer system might need some improvements as we suffered several times where we couldn't view her lectures. Thank you Prof. Kanuha for a great semester and class, keep teaching it. |
| Nice teacher, knew material, and was able to relate to local's about certain topics |
| no |
| I liked the idea of taking the chapter tests online at our own pace, however, the tests on the MySocLab site had many flaws. The tests and answers had multiple errors and the tests don't really test the concepts, they only have students search for the statement in the book and regurgitate the answer. The midterm/final exam were not too hard, I like that it was multiple choice, but the study guide is slightly vague. Perhaps knowing of key terms and main concepts ahead of time, rather than knowing the whole chapter, would be easier to remember and study. I enjoyed the class though, Kalei's lectures were always clear and gave examples that we could relate with, but taking notes were a bit rushed sometimes. |
| Very good teacher! Made understanding the course easy! |
| It was a good class. I learned a lot. It was an eye-opener to the world around us and how everyone
perceives it differently. |
| I would strongly recommend this class to anyone. Professor Kanuha is awesome! The amount of
work she gives you is very fair and she gives you a lot of time to do it. Her lectures are very
interesting and she is very passionate about the subject she is teaching. |
| exams are very straightforward, the papers are retaining to the class materials, very easy
class to pass especially with the extra credit points. |
| i really enjoyed this class because she also included content that related to Hawaii in terms of the concepts. she showed enthusiasm for the course that the concepts were easy to follow and understand. |
| Kanuha was a great teacher. Although she was out of town a lot, I like how we were still able to
communicate with her via email and she responded as soon as possible. |
| I am glad I took this class and would recommend it to my peers! |
| thank you Prof. for making this leanring experience a fun one! and thank you for the many chances to get bonus points i really appreciated that seeing as though im not a good test taker haha take care professor. |
| This class was really fun |
| Great class, I really gained a lot of knowledge and highly enjoyed myself. |
| I can honestly say that my sociology instructor went above and beyond with being helpful to my
needs as a student. She always emailed back within a quick amount of time, and her TA was
wonderful as well. I had a misunderstanding with the chapter exam assignment and although I did
not do as well as I had wished, she was understanding of my concerns and helpful to the best of her
ability. |
| She's a good teacher that brings her experience and knowledge into her lectures. Only cons are her absences. |
| The teacher made the lectures fun and entertaining so kept me coming to class. The class itself was boring at times but the teacher made it interesting and funny so it wasn't all that bad |
| Made the class enjoyable and great sense of humor too!! |
| Awesome teacher that speak her mind, and wants the best for her students. :) |
