26. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The unique presentations by everyone in the class. Everyone brought a personal and unique perspective to their presentations on violence against women and I am glad we were able to see that.
I thought it was a very good overview of the topic, and it was great that it was with a professor so devoted to and knowledgeable about the subject matter. The students themselves were also a great component of the class.
Class discussions and student presentations.
Small class size made it more comfortable and open for discussion. explored topics brought up by class members.
27. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
That we weren't able to cover all of the readings. While they were helpful just by reading, I think they could have been more beneficial to discuss them more in depth.
I can't think of anything that I didn't really care for. It was an informative and well organized class.

10. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The guest speakers that came and spoke on certain topics
I loved this class inspired me to apply for the intership I got after graduation at a domestic violence center. And hopefully ten years from now I will have a permanent job helping victims, and it will be because of this class.
Everything!, I loved the guest speakers and how they had done so much for the cause. The articles were eye opening to say the least. Professor Kanuha made a upper lever WI class actually fun.
The very interesting guest lecturers that came into the class. Not only were they interesting but they also were able to give us lots of information and kept the course interesting as well.
Class lectures.
The fact that this was my first class that focused on gender violence and had so many intereting guest lecturers. As well as because Kalei was very passionate about and involved with the material.
The presentations that were given in class. I know I'll be taking that knowledge and the personal stories with me everywhere I go. I'm doing that now and I believe that it has made me a better person.
Reevaluating my biases and my past views, opinions, and perspective of how society treat women. I will remember most that society learned to treat women as minorities and society can unlearn those structures and begin to treat women justly. I will remember that as an active member in community, I can participate making a difference.
the domestic violence presentation we had. It was extremely eye opening.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
guest speakers!!! i the extra credit point were a big help, wish it could be more then ten points.
The guest speakers
The guest speakers and how awesome their jobs were or how their past experiences made them stronger.
The guest lecturers were interesting and gave each class something fresh and new. Kalei was an amazing teacher for this course in which made the course what it was. She treated us with respect and like adults which made so much difference between this course and many others. I appreciated that we had the ability to ask for extensions and not be marked down for it. Also for the chance to rewrite and get a better grade.
.
I enjoyed the guest lecturers and the first hand experiences that they shared with us.
Bringing in outside resources, outside organizations to explain themselves and the work they do.
Feminist view in: Gender violence; domestic violence, sexualy violence, economic violence, intimate partner violence. I especially enjoyed the case analysis project.
The guest lectures were very helpful in understanding how much of a problem gender violence is in our society.
24. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
the writing assignment were just way to much, the case analysis paper was dreadful! The grading was harsh, felt really discouraged about writing another paper, knowing that i would most likely get another bad grade. The reflection papers are based on what we thought about the readings and what we felt was important. But we were graded not on that, it was if we understood the matrial, which personally I felt the readings werent hard to understand.
That it was hard to cover everything in depth
I wished Professor Kanuha would have lectured more.
There was nothing that I didn't like. I guess writing the 15 page paper was not fun, but I liked the topic once researching it and was really glad that I wrote it after all. It was terribly long, maybe make it min 12 pages or something but I really have no complaints.
.
One or two of the readings because the material wasn't as interesting.
....don't think this is possible. Sorry can not compute.
The weeking reading need to be assessed better. Many of the materials listed on the syllabus were not even covered or discussed. Time spent to read some of the journals (i.e. Inmate and Incest related journals) could have been better utilized if we were directed to specific readings that would benefit in completing the assignments.
The reflection papers were hard to grasp.
25. Global appraisal: Considering everything how would you rate this COURSE?

26. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Seeing the teacher more in class, discouraging because when it came time to write the paper, had no clue what to really say. Go over the readings that were assigned, they were really interesting. The case analysis paper was just too long to write.
Make it twice a week.
Professor Kanuha should lecture more. I love to hear her teach the material because she is so insightful without being pushy. There should also be field trips to certain locations that can broaden our understanding of the material.
Keep Kalei as the instructor
.
Maybe it would be beneficial if the guest lecturers were listed on the syllabus or known a day or two beforehand.
Having the students sit in a circle where it's easier for in class discussion among students.
Time could have been better spent with specific readings for assignments and other reading for more knowlege or extra credit, all readings were great selected material, but, time management is the reason for this statement. The lectures were awesome, but, class discussion to hear direct feedback would have been helpful.
Provide examples for how the reflection papers should be written as far as what key points to hit. Also, I would have liked to have seen more lectures from the professor to further my understanding of certain topics.
27. Other comments:
really like Dr.kanuha, understanding, extremely knowledgable, and nice.
This class inspired me to take a new career path.
Kalei was really an amazing teacher and I was so glad to have the chance to take this course from her. She really respects her students in treating them like adults and allowing us to make choices in the course and really have our grade dependent to how much work I want to put into it. She is genuinely passionate about Gender Violence and knows so much about the topic. When she talked I was always interested because of her knowledge and her recognizable kindness. Such a wonderful teacher. Thank you Kalei, for being a amazing teacher and helping us learn about Gender Violence. One of the best courses I have taken at UH
.
Kalei is a great teacher who is flexible and understanding when dealing with the course materials. If she taught another course, I would take that class if I could. This class took an interesting path by using many guest lecturers rather than all PowerPoint presentations which was refreshing!
By far my favorite class of the semester and possibly my favorite in my college career. Thank you for everything.
Here are words to describe Professor Kanuha. Brilliant woman Respectful and genuine person Gentle and loving hearted person
great semester!

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The course design that incorporated hands on approach to qualitative analysis by using interviews of fellow classmates and discussing the coding process were the most valuable aspects of the course. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone interested in using grounded theory methodology. I also thoroughly enjoyed the diversity of views that came in from different classmates. This was facilitated by the Kalei's encouragement to allow people to speak up.
The hands-on practice and activities, the journal, and the opportunity to work on our own and other students' actual projects throughout the semester. Also, a small number of people in the class is key.
I felt that the time spent in class was the most valuable.
Grounded theory method and the coding
The practice with our own coding, Kalei's stories about her past research as well as other students' research.
Practice interviews, instructor feedback, working through peer projects
Working together on Initial, Axial coding was the most helpful to me being a new person to qualitative research.
I really enjoyed leaning how to apply qualitative methods and now would like the incorporate it in my own research. I am confident that Dr. Kanuha has provided me with the tools to do so.
Finding out the real me. By doing interviews and other stuffs, I discovered the real me which was quite different from what I had thought about myself. So, this course was like a self-discovery course.
I felt like I got strong, in-depth training in interview and grounded theory methodology. applying the tools through the course was particularly helpful as was working with peers through such a variety of topics.
I think everything. if I say one thing, journal homework was very helpful for me. When She read my journal, she understood how I felt and leanred from interviw process. Then, she gave me appropirate tips. This was very helpful.
7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I can't think of anything in specific.
Everything was valuable.
I'm not sure. I guess I would say the student presentations.
The debate about between positivist and the opponent is somewhat unfinished debate and i do not think it will be useful.
I cannot think of any. It was a great class all around.
I think a lot of the reading was repetitious, and had a lot of overlap. It did make me understand that qualitative research is something that needs to be learned by practice and cannot be learned from a book.
a few of the readings were of pereipheral relevance to the class lectures - when we're all so pressed for time, it would be nice to cut to the relevant material, especially once the projects start full-swing
none
8. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
Being the course which enabled me to immediately apply what I learnt. For making doing as part of learning.
how much it helped me realize what type of researcher I really want to be, and how much qualitative research is lacking and needed in other disciplines that are typically dominated by the quanitative sciences. I will always remember how genuinely invested Kalei was in us as students, and how much she helped me realize the best path to take for my research and overall Thesis project.
It was my first experience coding qualitatively and I'll always remember that. I think I'll always remember Kalei, too.
Practicing the qualitative research method
Kalei. One of the very best teachers I have ever had. Her pedagogy, teaching material, curriculum, experience, supportive and inclusive personality have been inspirational to me. And my first 'real' codes! I have never coded at this level and I believe I have started a new direction in my research path. One day I will look back and remember the first time I coded with Kalei and my peers. A happy memory.
The degree to which we all were able to grow and become more capable researchers.
The importance of listening, and grasping deeper meaning in the conversations you have with the everyday person.
Teaching me how to use grounded theory.
Her helpfulness. She is my role model for how to interact with students.
this class helped me learn theories and methods I will actually apply to my thesis so I will surely remember that
I will probably remember everthing as much as I can. This class made me a big picture how to make a interview field work. I think this process will help me my future reserch.

Neutral on question 21 because we didn't receive actual letter grades on anything throughout semester. This did not bother me.
This course is really excellent and I strongly recommend my friend to take this class
This is an exemplary model for a qualitative research class. It requires expertise and personal traits that no many professors have. Wonderful class.
Valli is the best professor for this kind of course. She is very patient and brings inspiration to the class. Great job!
I thinkl when she talks about the several stages of coding, she should introduce the index-card method. First, from the interview transcripts, we write in vivo and/or descriptive codes on each 3X5 index cards. Then, to go to the next abstract codes, we gather the cards which contain similar topics and/or themes in one bundle. This method is easier for us to get abstract coding rather than working entirely on the MS Word as you did in class.
I would (and in fact, already have) strongly recommend that anyone in my department or any other who is planning to use qualitative methods take this class. I really cannot understate how important having a good methods class has been for me in developing my thesis proposal - I anticipate I will find it even more important once I get into the field!
Thank you for teaching us. I appriciate your all works. I think you are the best teacher to take care studnets. I know many professoers take care own works, but i could tell you also have passiton to teach us. Mahalo

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
slides posted on laulima, and detailed syllabus, and extra credit opportunities.
#11, 8, 7, 6,4, 3, 2. I gained a lot of knowledge and better understanding about racisim in Hawaii. Through Kumu's lectures and text readings it enabled me to get a better picture not only on society, but also about my own thinking, attitude and actions. Thank you Kumu Kanuha
I feel that there were no outstanding aspects because I found everything to be quite valuable. I feel like I can walk away with a lot under my belt while being able to not make so many prejudgments of people based off of race, color, etc. As well as know the history of how Hawai'i's diversity impacts many prejudices that are known today.
I really enjoyed the sovereignty unit because I feel like you presented the facts of the illegal overthrow, ongoing U.S. occupation and current laws and policies (including what the Akaka Bill means for Hawaii) surrounding the Hawaiian sovereignty. I think it is most important for people to understand current events from an un-bias (or seemingly un-bias) standpoint versus the media, and political points of view which are usually one-sided.
Professor Kanuha was cool. Woohoo!
The teacher's knowledge and passion for the subject was very valuable. Because of her knowledge, we learned as a class. Because of her passion, it was more than facts; we were able to feel these issues as they have played a part of our state's history. But most valuable was the teacher's desire to connect with the students. Our class had a diverse group of students, and the teacher made it a point to reach out to everyone, even those who may have had personal obstacles throughout the semester. Teaching is more than having intellect and a degree. It requires the ability to connect with your students. Our teacher had all of the above.
The lectures themselves were most valuable. Even though we don't get tested specifically on all the information given on the powerpoints and throughout her lecture, the information does tie in towards the overall concept and idea of the course that you would need to write your papers and take your tests.
Kalei made a point to present the material in a relevant way. This has allowed me to utilize the information from the course in my everyday life.
I liked the fact that she made it a point to go over important issues that many people do not like to talk about such as Hawaiian sovereignty and women's rights. Also, she explained things in detail so that even the mainland and foreign students would be able to understand Hawai'i's background.
The videos played during lectures helped a lot in understanding the material.
the powerpoint lectures
i enjoyed the depth we went into the material. i didnt think we were going to go so deep into the readings and topics but we did. it made me see and understand the topics easier.
The relationship between understanding the past of different ethnicities in Hawaii and understanding the present and future of the islands.
I felt the readings were very effective in portraying the dynamics of racism in Hawai'i.
The lessons on culture
videos
Teaching about my ancestors was very interesting!
The cultural event assignment was most valuable to me because of the experience and knowledge I gained from connecting outside sources into the classroom.
I thought all of the material was very valuable. A lot of emphasis was on the Massie case. It depicted the ideas that we learned and applied it to a specific case. I really enjoyed that. The ppts were really helpful too. They were useful to refer back to. The additional readings from the book were helpful in showing the outlooks on the islands from different perspectives.
Mostly just the critical examination on the ways we think about Race and ethnicity, in general and in particular to Hawai'i. Valli's voice is unique, she is lesbian, almost senior (i was surprised!), and Japanese/Hawaiian. I identify with the homosexual status and being part Japanese. I'm not sure, but I might have had different attitudes about the class if i didnt know this; in anycase I was excited to hear her voice on this issue.
- understanding the dynamic of the term "haole" and the weight it carries in and outside of the islands - understanding the present politics of today going around about sovereignty in hawaii, and what that would mean for native hawaiians, locals, and non- locals - difference between prejudice and discrimination; how to be sensitive of all ethnicities and being able to identify the wrongs of prejudice and discrimination as they happen today (familiarizing more with the massie case)
As a haole from the mainland I really knew nothing about the sociology and history of the islands. I would suggest all sociology majors take her class. I learned a lot, and it was fun. Sometimes talking about race can be difficult. But this class was worth taking....thanks for a great semester!!!
Attending each and every lecture opened doors to much information I never knew about.
all of it
I live her so I think it is very important for me and everyone else to know the kistory that makes Hawaii what it is today. I did not know any of this coming into this class, and I am leaving it with this greater knowledge.
The explanation of the different methods of racism (i.e. discrimination, stereotypes, etc.). I had always kinda lumped them together but didnt know there was a difference.

the videos were very helpful in relating the readings and lectures. the readings were good.
The provided visual aides as the powerpoints and her lectures with the detailed explanation of the Hawaiian cultures.
Dr. Kanuha is a great lecturer! Lectures were great readings were really thought-provoking, and the few movies well selected. I liked the numerous tests and short papers as well as the cultural immersion experience.
Prof, was always posting things on Laulima. Updates were accessible and very helpful to class. Structure of class quizzes exams and writings were easy to keep up with and Bonus Points always HELPS!!
good teacher
everything, Professor kanuha covered so much, this was not my first class dealing with native hawaiian history, but i learned so much. The things we covered in class gave me so much insight to the past and how sad it all really was. I loved this class, it was the best part of my day this semester.
I liked the fact of everyone in our class was of different backround then their neighbor. So think before speaking was on the top of eveyone';s list because the people i sat next to most were of different racial, ethnic, econmical backrounds.

The seating! i hate the class seating! creaky desks, weird lighting system and most of all, the arrangement discourages discussion. This class would be so so so so much better if we had more freedom just in our positions to facilitate small group and class discussion, which sadly our class lacked. This course is about everyone, because we all have a unique voice to put into the discussion. I lament the fact there wasn't enough of it, although I know that there is just too much information to cram into one little course.

30. Please list: suggestions for improving the TA's teaching style and methods.
None needed - Both Kumu and Rinda work great together and it shows. Fabulous job team.
The TA was very helpful
Nothing. She was kool.
The TA was also a great teacher. I guess everything rolls downhill --- meaning --- with a teacher as commendable as Prof. Kanuha, it doesn't surprise me that the TA was just as commendable. They were a great team that got the teaching and learning done.
Rinda was able to connect the material being covered with other issues from her past, which made it interesting. She is a good speaker and with time will become a great lecturer.
none. she is good already
none, the ta was very good!
She was awesome nothing needs to change
very knowledgeable
The TA was very nice. I never really had the chance to have a personal conversation with Rinda. She seemed very patient and courteous. I found it astonishing how she quickly knew all of our names! I think Rinda lead class once. She was very much like Kalei: knowledgeable and full of personality. I enjoyed it. She also readily made herself available, which was very good.
I interacted with the TA once outside of class, she was very courteous and it was nice to talk to her. She taught the class for about two class sessions, and the lesson went fine, in her lesson there was alot of information to put through to us too. Its hard to balance giving information and getting class feedback on understading and things like that.
youtube helped me learn and put things into perspective. you could possibly think about incorporating more of those sorts of mediums.
The T.A. was the best T.A. I have ever had. She even gave a really, really good lecture when the professor was out of town. She's cool and knows her stuff.
Never got a chance to really interact with her. But her lecture on Okinawa was superb.

enjoyed the class! gained more insight on subects
I should have taken this class either during my freshman or sophmore year. Unfortunately, it's only for upper classmen. What good that is when there is so much rich information.
I really enjoyed this class. It was a very informative and I feel like I definitely need to start perpetuating my culture more because of all the insights that I had not previously known.
I think it is unfortunate that the in class quizzes account for so much of our grade, because multiple choice tests are only one way of grading how/what a student has learned from the class I think there should be other ways that points should be accounted for. Or if not, I think there should be more extra credit (with no cap) that cater to the students who attend class regularly or complete assignments extra credit worthy, like 1 pg reflection papers on the readings/out of class current events. I feel the reflection papers forced me to learn better/more than the multiple choice quizzes did. I think the cultural activity paper and sovereignty paper were good assignments for this class. I also liked the video's played in class.
Professor Kanuha was awsome. I think she should give Blane Kaneko an "A" for the class even though he might be a little short on points.
This topic of racism and ethnicity is a very sensitive topic. I'm glad it is being taught at the university level as it is without any sugarcoating. It is better to teach historical truths than to grow up being taught untruths. Thank you to UH for offereing such a course.
I really enjoyed the class. I was always able to feel the passion Kalei had in teaching us about racism and how she really, truely had OUR best interest at heart. She helped me to view many things in such a different standpoint. Out of the many classes i've taken her class was truely the most beneficial. I came into this course naive to all that had happend to Hawaii in the past. Now i appreciate living here even more than i had ever known.
This was the best class that I have taken at UHM. The material covered was relevant, there were excellent guest lecturers, and assignments that were actually enjoyable. I would take this course again if I could receive credit! Kalei is a great lecturer and is very passionate about teaching the material. I would recommend this class to anyone, not only because the issues covered affect everyone who call Hawai'i home, but because Kalei is an exceptional professor.
I would recommend this class to everyone. But only if Professor Kanuha is teaching. :) I am an Ethnic Studies major and this was by far the best class that I have taken of all my major courses as well as out of all my college classes I have ever taken. THANK YOU! :) :) :)
I just want to thank the professor and Rhinda for all the hard work they put in for this class. With out their help getting a grade desired would have been near to impossible.

i would highly recommend this class to anyone and recommend even more for anyone to take a class from professor kalei! she was an awesome teacher! i would definitely take class from her again!
It was a fun class and I learned a lot. I feel that this class was very useful in helping the students better understand important issues and struggles in Hawaii today.
I think what plagued the teacher and the TA was the amount of information they were trying to teach. Its hard to get us to understand fully the definitions and ideas being presented without a thorough lecture, but I think it is equally important to have student feedback so we can relate to the other students as well. If we all chip in to chip away at the ambiguity of concepts and definitions, it'll probably be easier to understand since we've stretched our experience across all of our stories. Of course, it takes a certain kind of class to facilitate that dynamic, so hit or miss. Anyway, I really enjoyed the class, and it was really eye opening to kind of look at ourselves from the outside in, and see all that really went on to shape our Hawaii today.
I though Prof Koo was the best sociology teacher (at UH). But I think this was better than Koo's sociology (of Korea) course. I loved this class (soc456) and would love to take another class with Valli Kanuha. Great job! My favorite teacher/class at UH so far
I think a course like this should be required for all UH students. I gained so much valuable information. She was also a very good teacher who I respect for her being so honest with us.

There is only one comment. This class was the greatest class in this session.

Kanuha was a great teacher. Although she was out of town a lot, I like how we were still able to communicate with her via email and she responded as soon as possible.
exams are very straightforward, the papers are retaining to the class materials, very easy class to pass especially with the extra credit points.
the powerpoints are pretty boring, seeing it comes straight from the text. soemthing needs to be done so that we can interact more with each other, since it is a sociology class. it would be cool if we could do exercises in class where the concepts could be used and applied so that we can better understand them. the tests are good, the study guides are helpful for prep for the tests. i don't like the papers we have to write. i also dont like the online homework quizzes. thanks for the extra credit opportunities, but I just really don't like the papers. too little points for that much writing. maybe those papers could be made into extra credit instead. she's a good teacher though, she tries to relate concepts to the students so that we can understand it better.
I really enjoyed this course overall!
Very good teacher! Made understanding the course easy!
Great class, I really gained a lot of knowledge and highly enjoyed myself.
The teacher made the lectures fun and entertaining so kept me coming to class. The class itself was boring at times but the teacher made it interesting and funny so it wasn't all that bad
Loved the course. i marked disagree for her access after class because when class ended she would usually rush out after class making it hard to ask her questions unless we looked for her later in the day
None.
This class was really fun
i really enjoyed this class because she also included content that related to Hawaii in terms of the concepts. she showed enthusiasm for the course that the concepts were easy to follow and understand.
Lectures are helpful. Uses examples to help us understand the concepts.
Nice teacher, knew material, and was able to relate to local's about certain topics
It was difficult on me as a student when Dr. Kanuha was not always present in class. She was a good professor and the TA Rinda was also able to communicate the topics well. I learned equal amounts from the two when each of them lectured; however, the switching between teachers was difficult because some material was covered more extensively than others. I was not appreciative of the use of homosexuality and same-sex marriage throughout the course. I was uncomfortable with the amount that the topic took in the class. I also was frustrated because we were required to complete a research project of our choosing, yet the topic was restricted to public views of same-sex marriage. It was very unfair to the students to concentrate the course on same-sex marriage so frequently, and it was not beneficial to me. I have absolutely no interest in the topic, so when I was required to complete a research project worth a significant part of my grade on a topic I did (and still do) not have interest in was difficult, and resulted in a lower effort I was willing to put towards the project. i can only imagine that that alone decreased my grade in the course. Dr. Kanuha and Rinda Yamashiro are great at teaching. The concentration on homosexuality and same-sex marriage was NOT beneficial for me by any means.
very talkative teacher.. nice class atmosphere..
Great class, would have enjoyed it more if Professor Kanuha were more available outside of class and lectured more though.
I would strongly recommend this class to anyone. Professor Kanuha is awesome! The amount of work she gives you is very fair and she gives you a lot of time to do it. Her lectures are very interesting and she is very passionate about the subject she is teaching.
For a 100-level class, with over 150 students, doing a 6-8 page research assignment was too much.
Professor Kanuha is an exceptional professor who not only is well versed in her field, but also has a remarkable ability to relate to her students as well as delivering the course material in an effective and fluid manner. It is a rarity to find an instructor like Professor Kanuha who is so devoted and available to her students both through scheduled class time and through e-mail, her fairness to students when it comes to a full schedule or personal matters is truly admirable.
Awesome teacher that speak her mind, and wants the best for her students. :)
I am glad I took this class and would recommend it to my peers!
Loved Kanuha. Gained insight that I would not have reached on my own. Shows interest and love for what she is teaching, which makes the learning experience for the student better. Loved how she always came in with high energy and set the mood for the class. One of the best instructors I have had thus far.
You were so great, I really enjoyed your class this semester. You made me feel like you cared about each of us individually and wanted us to succeed. This mean a lot when you live in a world where professors really don't care anymore. Thank you for EVERYTHING! PS- Rinda was GREAT as well... both super helpful
Overall, the class was very enjoyable. the way information was delivered through the lectures made the class flow smoothly. being able to give examples of things whether they be personal examples or not always helps one picture things a little more clearly...or at least in my opinion it does. just a note to those who do take it...that if you constantly keep up if not a little ahead of the class, it should be an easy 'A' class. especially when you have the opportunity for extra credit. the class and work doesn't ask for much out of the student except a little devotion of their time. also, the way the professors sees the class as far as their attitude. you can go to class if you choose, that's your choice. she doesn't hesitate to fail any one person if they break the rules. i wouldn't see a reason to want to cheat or do anything to result in her failing you since the class is quite straight forward. good class to take and great professor. i would rec taking a class from her. Thanks Kanuha.
Valli Kanuha made this class very enjoyable by really encouraging class participation and making her lectures fun and interesting making me want to listen to them. I really enjoyed taking this class.
You are the best teacher I have ever had, I highly enjoyed coming to class everyday. :)
Only complaint are the assignments/ work amount. Work is a bit excessive for an introductory level class. I think that the research project is unnecessary. It too much extra work, and it is a somewhat difficult for a 100 level class. As far as the online quizzes go, they are time consuming, and sometimes the corrects answers are marked incorrect, or there are other technical problems. But their not too bad, alongside the papers. Maybe just the research project should go, or be replaced.
Professor kanuha was an awesome professor because she was very thorough with the lectures and always tried her best to engage with the other students in class. She is also nice and very understanding when it came to being absent in class. I would totally recommend this class to any student whether the person is or isn't majoring in sociology.
I liked the idea of taking the chapter tests online at our own pace, however, the tests on the MySocLab site had many flaws. The tests and answers had multiple errors and the tests don't really test the concepts, they only have students search for the statement in the book and regurgitate the answer. The midterm/final exam were not too hard, I like that it was multiple choice, but the study guide is slightly vague. Perhaps knowing of key terms and main concepts ahead of time, rather than knowing the whole chapter, would be easier to remember and study. I enjoyed the class though, Kalei's lectures were always clear and gave examples that we could relate with, but taking notes were a bit rushed sometimes.
Although she assigns work, it's all online and it saves paper, ink, and money, which made it convenient for me this particular semester. The exam material and style were all appropriate as that it can be finished within the short 50 minute class; multiple choice is the best. The one thing that I was extremely grateful for was her generosity with extra credit points despite not needing to be. She provided many opportunities to gain them and they are helpful to boost grades if one misses an assignment or did poorly on one. The unit mastery assignment structure was also stress-relieving. Unlike other online courses, I could go at my own pace and not worry about submitting them online on time and was especially helpful when I had tests to study for or important assignments due that particular week. Powerpoint lectures are easy to follow and are posted online in case we missed anything or the day. Professor Kanuha is a great SOC 100 prof. and she teaches it rather well. She thinks of the students and appreciates and considers our inputs as we may openly or privately discuss them on possible assignments, exams, and extra credit work. This is important thing to think about because professors are so focused on getting the course material out to students as quickly as possible that they forget to ensure that the students are actually retaining said material. She can be funny at times referencing sociological concepts through current trends and news and personal stories. Her class as I have seen it doesn't need any improvement because her teaching style matched my learning style. There are and will be more students who are like me and/or have similar situations. Even for those whose teaching styles differ, it will be difficult to assert that her class isn't overall "agreeable." However, the BUSAD computer system might need some improvements as we suffered several times where we couldn't view her lectures. Thank you Prof. Kanuha for a great semester and class, keep teaching it.
You both were a really good teachers. I learned so much from both of you and have taken an interest in the field of sociology. Definitely my favorite class of the semester!
The instructor was knowledgable on the material and made the lectures very interesting. However, I felt that the large enrollment aspect of the course weakened its quality. Also, even though the text chosen wasn't bad, the chapter tests given online by the textbook publisher had a number of errors.
Great professor. Fair, funny, and knowledgeable. Made me want to take more Soc classes. (:
She's a good teacher that brings her experience and knowledge into her lectures. Only cons are her absences.
Thankyou for the wonderful semester. Alohalani
The TA was really nice and helpful outside of class and for questions but wasn't very effective when teaching class. It seems like Valli Kanuha was out of class alot and instead of canceling the TA taught. Kanuha was sick alot so I don't think she is usually absent from class that much. She's really good at describing hard to grasp concepts. I also like that she doesn't take attendance because she lets us be responsible for ourselves.
What I liked about this course, taught by Dr. Kanuha, is that she made Soc100 very fun. I really liked the "Henslin" textbook that she selected for our studies. I also liked how Dr. Kanuha incorporated Hawaiian and local values into the subject of some of the chapters in the Henslin textbook. What I really liked about this course is that Dr. Kanuha gave us plenty (PLENTY!) of opportunities to get 10 extra credit points. Heck, she only made the midterm exam out of 25 points, despite there being 30 questions for the midterm exam. Overall, I would rate Dr Kanuha to be an excellent instructor for this Sociology 100 course. On the other hand, what I did not like about this course is that some of the subjects in the lecture were too "politically correct," so to speak. There were also some time where Dr Kanuha seemed to be persuading us to be pro-same-sex marriage (due to her sexual orientation), and some of our stance varied on this "touchy" subject. Lastly, I wish Dr. Kanuha would lecture for all her classes! I know she has conferences to attend on the mainland, but she does a great job of getting her knowledge into my head, w/ her well-worded lectures! ;)
Thank u for teaching me this semester!!!
3 reaction papers + a 6 page research paper + 15 online chapter exams which questions barley Relate to the subject material covered in the chapter. + a midterm test and a final test. Sounds like a bit much for an intro 100 level class dont you think?
I just hope that the last written assignment were not given as a reasearch project. It is long and i am not too sure of what to do well i have an idea but not too sure. Although the textbook is easy to read but the chapter test is kind of tricky at times. The chapter is kind of long. Since there is 16 weeks of school and we have to read like at least one chapter per week. therefore many people need to cram at the end of the semester to finish the chapter test. I wish the web will let us review the test so we can use it to study for the test but thats not the way the site was design. We can only view it right after the test only and once we exist we can no longer view the test again. Maybe a few chapter should have a due date to keep the student in track of the reading like 4 out of the 10 chapter. I wish there were 15 point of extra credit given because people like me are not a good test taker. The short written assignment are fun and we get to express our view. The class is easy and fun to attend for most of the time. The professor's way of lecture is very interactive and the example given can be easily relate to our everyday life. I hope there are more professor like you in the university.
It was a good class. I learned a lot. It was an eye-opener to the world around us and how everyone perceives it differently.
None
The only thing is that this class is only a few pages short from a writing intensive class, too much writing for an intro SOC class I think. Reflections are fine but research paper?? come on, I don't think that's necessary for an intro class. Lectures are very interesting and bonus points are much appreciated! I was bored when the TA took over the lecture though, even tho she knew what she was talking about, she just wasn't as entertaining as Kanuha.
Kanuha is a great lecturer. it was disapointing to show up and constantly have the TA lecturing. She was smart and capable but Kanuha has a passion that was entertaining and engaging. When she was there lectures were interesting. Would have liked more outside of class work; small assignments. Not all of us are good testers and with only a couple of papers it makes it hard to prove we do know what we are doing.
no
I strongly appreciate Professor Kanuha's understanding of the subject, as well as her ability to relate to the students and our needs. I would definitely look forward to taking another course instructed by Professor Kanuha.
thank you Prof. for making this leanring experience a fun one! and thank you for the many chances to get bonus points i really appreciated that seeing as though im not a good test taker haha take care professor.
I really enjoyed this class because although it was a 100 level course, she went into detail on some topics. I also liked the connection she is able to make between the material we are learning in class and Hawaii, I think many classes should do this because it helps to make a connection between what we learn in class and what is really happening. What I also thought was interesting was that Rinda was allowed to teach lectures, although this started off rocky it went pretty well and towards the end of the semester she got into the groove of lecturing and was able to effectively communicate topics learned in class.
Kalei is a wonderful teacher. She makes it really easy to understand her powerpoints. I am greatful to her for all she has taught us this semester.
Lots of opportunities to earn bonus points
Content in the tests is way harder than the content that is actually taught.
She is very helpful in giving extensions because she knows that being a college student is difficult for some.
interesting subject with a helpful instructor
I felt like this class was a writing intensive class. She gave out too much writing assignments. The professor seemed to be very enthusiastic about the subject and she made the class fun because she was funny.
I thought that this professor did a great job of making class fun and interesting.
Made the class enjoyable and great sense of humor too!!
Really good teacher. Very understanding and very flexible for everyone. Overall, the class was well done.
Her knowledge of the subject was great and she was able to engage the class by giving true life examples. The chapter exams require more effort than necessary because her lectures were way more informative than the book; and the chapter exams were verbatim and you didnt really learn from them. The assignments really made you think outside of the box and address issues that really are important today. Her goal was to teach us the sociological perspectives, and I think everyone had a good sense of that and are able to really be skeptics of certain things, as well as be a little more sensitive to other controversial topics. It was a VERY interesting class, and I'd recommend her to anyone. Quite a bit of work, but the extra credit opportunities make up for it. She should stress students to keep track of their EC points because it can get confusing in the end. Overall. A+ for Dr. Kanuha
I really thought it was very beneficial to look at the sociology world in a local perspective as opposed to just seeing things the in the mainland way. I thought it really helped me to better grasp and understand the material better because I can relate to these concepts. Kalei was always prepared with lectures and also provided the lecture slides online so students could follow along if they missed a class.
I can honestly say that my sociology instructor went above and beyond with being helpful to my needs as a student. She always emailed back within a quick amount of time, and her TA was wonderful as well. I had a misunderstanding with the chapter exam assignment and although I did not do as well as I had wished, she was understanding of my concerns and helpful to the best of her ability.
Dr. Kahuna was a amazing professor!!

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
media presentations
The aspect that I enjoyed the most in the course was the material of pornography for it explains the history of maleâ??s sexual endeavors and was the solid foundation to some of the gender violence which occurs today in life.
the readings were interesting, lectures were informative, hearing other students feedback/questions, classroom discussion
the extra credit assignments in class, helped students that came to class, and quickwrites.
I liked how the professor was very knowledgable and passionate about the course topic--it made her very credible when she presented new material. I also enjoyed how she had guest speakers who work in the domestic violence field and have tons of experience with these types of cases.
I enjoyed the in class presentations we did throughout the semester. It was interesting to see all the different examples of gender violence.
Val is a very interesting lecturer. I can honestly say that she is the best lecturer I have ever had. She is extremely passionate about her feelings and she makes the lectures very relevant to my everyday life. I love it when she throws in some of her life experiences and cases that she had to deal with in the past (no names of course). If it was any other teacher, I would not be able to spend 2 1/2 hours in a classroom listening to a lecture and looking at powerpoints. I never thought I would say this, but her lectures were very enjoyable. Also, I like her grading system. In the syllabus she provides a grading system that is clear cut and leaves no room for question. In the syllabus, all of the course content is laid out and is explicitly clear. I LOVE VAL!!
The media presentations that everyone presented in class each class.
New perspectives
media presentations and guest speakers.
The opportunity to improve upon our writing assignments after receiving feedback. This helped us to recognize inconsistencies in our writings and to problem-solve how to get our ideas across. I especially liked the way that she gave people many opportunities and reminders when assignments were coming up or due. She also went over the expectations and made the concepts a little clearer for us to understand.
it was good to have papers instead of test and class discussions!
Guest speakers helped relate the course material that we learned to a real life situation.
discussion
All the videos and readings, I actually enjoyed the course AND learned!!
I found discussions on Human Trafficking to be the most interesting
Kanuha was very interesting because she had so much knowledge of the material. Though the topic of the class was interesting in itself, having Kanuha was definitely a positive!
I learned a lot about topics that were of my best interest and topics that I could relate to. There was never a dull moment in class.
The media presentations displaying different aspects of gender violence in the media.
I liked the fact there was interaction with the teacher and students. There were open discussions on subjects. I did like the media presentations that we had to do in class. I thought that they were very helpful in the course work that we were doing.
video's deepened the impact of the message of the class
It was the best class I had this semester.
movies, guest speakers and lectures
The material presented!
the guest presenters and films
videos
24. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
learning contracts
I would say the numerous amount of papers, for I would probably settle to take an actual examine then have my grade be based off of papers.
2 1/2 hours per class is too long. I'd prefer twice a week instead.
The content of papers were to hard and grading was too critical. 2 1/2 class was too long.
I had a really hard time grasping the framing issues and ethical approaches in terms of relating them to our readings. Thankfully after a few months, I finally understand it.
As always, I hate writing papers and reading textbooks, who doesn't? Can't say anything bad about Val and the course though.
The workload, too much homework, in class assignments, presentations, and other assignments.
Debates over views
learning contract. lame.
I did not like writing so much assignments.
Long class times. Course material was good.
The only problem i had was the class being on Monday.
lots to read
N/A
The quick writes. I did all the readings for but continued to score very poorly on the quick writes. a general understanding of what was in the chapters should be enough to do well on the quick writes but it was not.
I loved the class. I have nothing negative to say about it at all.

26. Other comments:
a better balance of information showcasing â??genderâ?? not just females
more emphasis placed on discussing (feedback, questions, ...) materials such as videos or presentations,
Overall class was good and i feel i learned a lot.
Again, too much work for a class, it's not even a writing intensive and I seem to be writing more than my other writing intensives...And doing other assignments. And all of the male bashing, she bashes an men too much, being an ethics class, there should be both points of views discussed.
she was very opinionated and did not see the view of other students. if a student did not agree with what she was saying then the student was wrong. she told a student who disagreed with her that he needed therapy if he thought like that and that comment was completely inappropriate!
She is a good teacher. I would recommend her class to my friends and family. The goals and expectations are clearly outlined and if you put in the hard work and dedication, each person can succeed in this class.
Good class that taught me new perspectives on gender violence.
I really enjoyed the class. Kanuha was an excellent professor AND the material was interesting, a very difficult combination to find.
i learned a lot. this class made me realize so much more about gender violence

24. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The somewhat unconventional feeling. Sitting in a circle, sharing experiences, having people with similar issues to discuss your project. The teacher talking about her personal experiences and sharing anecdotes.
the opportunity to apply the concepts presented in the readings on my own data and to engage with other students as we went through the process of analysis.
had chance to do hands-on works on our own interests
class discussion
It was very hands-on...Kalei led us through each step and gave examples by allowing us to bring in our projects to the class. We practiced and observed interviewing techniques and were able to bring in samples of our work to further discuss/process with our class. She challenged us to think rigorously and thoughtfully, and brought in concepts that most classes do not speak to or critically explore, which is much needed in gradiate studies (ie. epistemology, meaning of validity, bias, etc). I was always fully engaged in every class, despite it being on a Tuesday evening.
Freedom to choose project topics and test-drive ideas and using student projects to illustrate qualitative techniques. I also enjoyed the Charmaz text and extra readings.
instructors ability to get ideas through to students so that students could understand and be able to use knowledge learned from class. questions in class were well-received
25. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I came across an old syllabus for this course where the final grade was split into thirds. In this course, it is split into halves, i.e. the final paper and everything that leads up to it. I feel super pressured now about the final paper because it is just one thing that can make or break your grade. Maybe splitting the final grade into smaller parts would be good, not sure how though. Also, it always seemed like time went by so fast and everyone's project was so interesting that naturally we couldn't spend that much time on each person. I wish I could have had the instructor as my personal tutor.
Some of my classmates seemed distracted.
a bit too much time spent on the initial step involved in the method, wish we could get more instructions on advanced stages of grounded theory (toward theory building)
limiting the class only in interviewing
We didn't have much time to discuss our readings and it was scheduled during a weekday evening.
Silverman and Marvasti text.
instructor's frustration with students' mistakes
26. Other comments:
Being in a totally different field than most of the other students made me feel just a tiny bit like an outsider because people couldn't relate to my project as much as they did to other people's. Also, seeing what people in sociology and other departments study made me more interested in their topics than my own which is hard because I have often wondered if I picked the right field. Other than that, I just want to thank the instructor for being the kind of instructor she is. She is so knowledgeable about qualitative research and seems to have answers and advice for so many things and problems you may run into. I just wish I could have fixed some of my personal issues that kept me from working harder so that I could have taken more advantage of all aspects of the course because this is one of the few courses I've had that I feel can really provide me with usable knowledge.
Thank you for a great semester!
it would be better if she is accessible out side the class.
This class was amazing! Thank you so much Kalei, I hope our paths cross again!
The class gave me a new found respect for qualitative research and how intense and rigorous the data collection and analysis can be. Also, I have been amazed in how the data is so rich and exciting and can reveal so much about a research question.

10. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The great lecture presentations
the instructor who taught it.
Kalei was a great prof! We all learned something!
The fact that the I was able to have a good time learning, despite the somewhat liberal view point.
This professor is definitely one of the best I have had in my three years of college education. She is incredibly kind and approachable, enthusiastic, very educated in what she teaches and inspires students to work hard, understand the material and strive to do well. She is truly respectful to all students and creates a really great learning atmosphere in her classroom. I never wanted to miss her class for she was always prepared and I was always very interested in what she had to say. She made my semester in Hawaii so nice, I will remember her!
the interesting and "eye-opening" lectures! There was always something to look forward to in this class.
Massie case.
How she taught me to critically analyze what I am and to articulate what I have learned
How much my viewpoints changed. I was very ignorant before this course about certain topics. Now I am educated. I loved this course.
Ten years from now, I'll remember how relevant this course was to the daily life and experiences I encounter living in Hawaii.
the Massie case. It was really fascinating as a story on its own but it also demonstrated a lot of the race relations relevant to the course. I'll also remember our Cultural Activity project because it got me out of the house, downtown, and taught me something new in a really fun way. I'll also remember the first day when we all looked at "stereotypical" photos and tried to guess their ethnicity. I never realized how "automatic" it is for people to "guess" people's ethnicity. Really eye opening.
the way Professor Kalei Kanuha presented issues related to the Native Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement even-handidly. Sovereignty is one of the most politically sensitive issues facing Hawai'i today, and Professor Kanuha handled the discussion very well!
what we learned in the class and the assignments we were given
Remembering the massie case and all the injustice that occured during it.
She was such a positive influence while in class. I didn't feel uncomfortable being a haole girl in her class, even though we were reading and talking about white dominance in the Pacific. I believe that what I will remember most is the disappointment I felt when I learned that my education on Hawaii and indigenous issues in mainland school systems was pathetic and incomplete to say the least.
The subject matter as presented through films and the professors natural abilities as a speaker. Her lectures flowed, and she displayed objective, but was able to carry a point of view. In addition, I felt that Dr. Kanuha cared deeply about the topics discussed in class. Finally, I was extremely pleased that a HAP subject was taught by a Native Hawaiian.
the deep insights of the class
the view points of different people and to always remember that we are all one people on earth and that no one people is greater than another.
The passion Professor Kanuha taught this class with. Also, the truth about the Hawaiian people that we don't learn about in our public education (k-12)
the topics we covered related to native hawaiians. the most influential part was learning about the Massie Case.
The Massie case.
great teaching methods, unique learning assignments, good class participation. also, this class strongly correlated with Anthropology 316, the study of tourism (with Yano), both classes complimented each other, and both were taught very well.
the massie affair
The intensity of writing papers in this class.
Being one of the top two courses I have taken in my college career. It challenged me mentally due to some of my previous prejudices of Hawaiians.
the instructor's ability to "teach". She was prepared, passionate, clear and willing to go as fast or slow as needed to clarify key points. Many instructors seem to "go through the motions", not VK. The historical information will stay with me as well.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
good, entertaining lectures
I learned so much about Native Hawaiian issues and sovereignty. It's so important for residents of Hawai'i to care to educate themselves on these issues.
Interesting material and the discussions she allowed. She was very attentive and supportive of the students and the learning process. She allowed ample amount of chances to do excel if the students chose to put in the effort. Overall very considerate and was an excellent experience.
She provided a variety of ways to do well in this class. Through papers and exams and bonus quizzes and points which was very nice!
The powerpoint lectures and activities that got us all invovled.
Content
I like the video and powerpoints best because it give assisted our learning and it give us opportunity to have class discussion and gave everyone an opportunity to share their thoughts. And Professor Kanuha is very appreciative of students giving their input that it makes me want to participate in class discussions and share my views and learnings
I liked the reading material the best. I didn't think I would like it because I hate reading, but the reading material, and the lectures that went with it were really interesting.
I liked how points taught in class made me more aware of our situation living in Hawaii.
Lectures, historical explanations, graphics/images in power point presentations, guest speakers,
This is a very hard question because I enjoyed all aspects of Professor Kanuha's course. Probably the one aspect I enjoyed most, however, was her discussions on the Massie-Kahahawai Cases.
the lectures were interesting
Learning the history of the hawaiian islands and how we came to be a part of the U.S.
The readings assigned made me think and work through personal feelings about the subjects and see other perspectives.
The reading and writing assignments were interesting.
the critical thinking on reflection papers
Learning about the different view point of different people. And also learning more about the illegal Hawaiian overthrow.
Able to re-write papers to get a better grade.
everything
Bonus Points! and the material covered
The structure of the grading system.
liked the assignments, enjoyed seeing the play "the statehood project". good guest speakers, really broadened my understanding of Hawaii, racism, and sovereignty.
opportunities to view and listen to programs in the community.
I really enjoyed our chapter about Hawaiian sovereignty.
Revisions are the best, they helped me truly understand the material and get a better grade in the class. I also liked the guest speakers, hearing from a different perspective was very thrilling.
I liked that it made me think of being in other shoes rather than my own. I really liked how this course explained the history and the issues regarding Hawaiians.
The historical information. I learned much more about the place I call home.
24. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
everything was good
Everything was great!
It seemed like grading was a bit easier on papers that was conforming to the author's viewpoint.
I can't think of anything I didn't like. This was my favorite class.
There isnt anything I didnt like about this course
I honestly can't think of anything that I least liked. This was a very good course.
It should have been listed as "Writing Intensive" because there were a lot of papers that had a minimum of five pages so the writing assignments took a lot of time.
As stated above, I enjoyed all aspects of Professor Kanuha's course, but probably the one aspect that did not seem to go well with the rest of her course were a couple exercises on social structure. I understand the reasons behind the exercises, but I thought Professor Kanuha over-emphasized this concept to the class. This is a minor issue, however.
The last guest speaker we had. The one from the Pu'a foundation... I didn't like her.
Learning about how badly treated the Native Hawaiians are. I did not like learning this truth.
Although the reading and writing was interesting, it was a bit much.
I truly enjoyed the class!
nothing
nothing.
The intensive papers that needed to be written.
said there wasn't too much reading but there was a fair amount of reading. I think it was misleading to say there wasn't going to be that much reading. (even though i enjoyed the reading materials)
writing papers
I hate writing papers.
n/a
I actually really enjoyed this course because the content was so engaging, sometimes it was really emotional. I never knew the level of transgression that Hawaiians face. So I liked ALL aspects of this course.

8. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
I found the videos we watched extremely helpful because it put emphasis on the topic. I also found the guest lecturers very informative.
Some of materials that we covered provided a better understanding of gender violence. Reading, listening, or watching the stories were so pathos driven that they make you open your eyes and mind. And because I was able to apply some of the materials to my life, I was able to reevaluate my thoughts and actions.
I really enjoyed the guest speakers because they have hands-on experience in dealing with issues that were discussed in class. I also think that having a small class size is a very good for this type of class because it becomes a safer and more intimate place and allows the students to be more comfortable in sharing. Overall, the instructior was very well knowledged and liked how she was able to help me to see that although we should feel sympathetic to those who are harmed, it is still very important to not shut those who do harm out of our lives because they are key to making change.
Dr. Kanuha displayed a deep and insightful knowledge into the arena of gender violence. She presented the material with tact which can be difficult. Her explanations were based on experience in the field and her lectures were very well made.
I thought the guest speakers and videos we watched along with all the great lectures were really helpful.
I liked the guest speakers and learning from everyone else's personal experiences.
9. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
N/A
I realized that as students, we are responsible for reading the assigned materials, but I came to realize at mid-semester (after the two reading response assignments were completed) that we really did not have to do the readings. For me personally, I found the textbook to be least valuable because I did not do the readings, but the textbook itself is very helpful and valuable because it provides us with knowledge had I read the readings.
Absolutely nothing.

22. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Excellent. I would recommend to friends to take this course from Kalei. It is very eye-opening and I learned a lot about the issue as well as myself. Kalei provided numerous extra credit opportunities. She is very approachable and open with students, which encouraged myself to reciprocate.
The course was stimulating and I really enjoyed having the professor teach the course. I believe that she did an excellent job. But I feel so powerless because as students, what can we do help alleviate the issues surrounding gender violence in Hawaii?
I thought this was a great class! I only wish there were more of these types of classes (and more professors like Kalei)here at UH. And if there are...then I wish I had known about them so that I could have taken them before I graduated!! Overall..great class!
excellent!!!!!
This course should be heavily emphasized if not required as it puts into focus your actions and beliefs and causes you to question why you think the way you do. This class also demystifies feminism and places gender equality into a sharp light. It was a phenomenal course that truly changed paradigms that I once held. Dr. Kanuha was great.
GREAT! I really enjoyed taking this course. It really changed my life.
I would strongly recommend this course and instructor.

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Actual practice using the methodology in class, especially line-by-line coding and developing themes. The focus on interviewing and transcription techniques was also of critical importance, and it was an inspired decision to include it in the course. The learning by doing approach made this course a winner for me.
Grounded theory, interview skills, and writing a qualitative research proposal were just some of the highligts I found very useful for my work both in the university and in the community. I will use this knowledge for a summer project on environmental justice/racism. Mahalo nui.
In class assignments and participation. Actively involved in applying the skills needed to develop the art of research.
The entire course was of great value. The texts were a great addition to my library and will be of great help in the future (I can definitely see myself referring back to these texts while working on my dissertation). The classroom discussions were and excellent way to engage in the material and really talk through the issues that we have been socialized to have "against" qualitative research and qualitative research methods. Perhaps the most valuable was having to conduct a qualitative research project during the semester and discussing each other's projects throughout the course. This helped as we got to see the issues others were having (so we didn't feel like we were alone) and were able to get a lot of practice with working with qualitative data and abstracting information from the data.
Focus on grounded theory methods and actual coding of data with class.
12. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I don't have an answer here. To be honest, this was the best course I've taken all year. More power! I strongly recommend it to other students.
None
Not much really, wish I would have taken this class earlier in my program.
The entire course was very valuable, though I would have preferred more time on interview technique and practice and perhaps exploring other sources of qualitative data. It would be wonderful if the course content could be developed and delivered over two semesters. The department should really consider the value of spending more time on teaching qualitative research methods and analysis.
