9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
lecture
I learned a lot of different concepts of physical anthropology.
The Great information that was given in every class...
The test gave a wide variety of opportunities to succeed
Dr. Bae was very thorough in his lecture presentations
I'm an anthropology major, so everything that was presented in the lectures had some relevance to my field. Furthermore, all of the information I was given was very interesting and presented well, so I think that in itself makes it valuable.
I think I've learned the most from this class during my two years at UH. The course has inspired me to take on a minor in anthropology. I'm very interested in human evolution (evolution in general) and I think I mainly loved this class a lot because it helped me really understand the idea that anthropology actually is, at least to a degree, "the most scientific of the humanities, and the most humanistic of the social sciences". I never really knew what physical anthropology entailed until I took this class. Slideshows, movies, and lecture content were all great. Nothing there could really be improved further.
Honestly, it was all valuable to me. The more I learned the more it all made sense, and continues to. All excellent.
The subject itself is very interesting and the power-points weren't the typical boring lectures.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
most of what we learned were just memorized facts. i feel that that kind of "learning" is outdated with modern technology and the internet
The instructor overwhelmed us with too much information.
Nothing
I would've liked more detail in the slides, because I felt that they were too simplistic at times for some of the more complex concepts.
-- snipped --
There was nothing that was of no value. It was all pertinent, relative and interconnected. Immature whiny inattentive students were the worst part.
The way the course is set up isn't the greatest. I feel that I would learn a lot more if I was required to do homework or write papers and do some outside learning rather than just studying for the exams.

-- snipped --
Have a online data base available, or at least a small portion of it so that it'd be easier to reflect on the previous class. I know it'd be unfair for those who come to class vs those who don't, but maybe a online system in which you could allow an email to go out to those only who are in attendance of that lecture...

I think he's already doing a very good job. He's strict, but not too strict. He's precise about what he expects of the students in a comprehensible fashion. He rewards students that put a serious effort in the class regardless of major. Finally, he has a nice personality, which makes paying attention and engaging in his lectures easy and enjoyable.
-- snipped --
I don't know that he can. It was all very good. Keep it challenging. Sometimes there are questions that we simply don't have enough time to discuss at length. Maybe a short discussion period for interested students.
Rather than having the class be just exams maybe include some homework assignments or readings or papers. Adding something that will get us students learning outside of lecture will make learning the material a lot easier and more enjoyable.

Friendly, Engaging, & Well-Versed
Knowledgable
He's generally a friendly, humorous professor who definitely demonstrates much understanding in his field. He's great at explaining all of the concepts and he's very organized. He's good at interacting with the students and getting us to contribute to the lecture. He's supportive and seems to care about his students. I actually really appreciated the quality of his slide show presentations too. He used the perfect amount of text and images together and the white background with black Times New Roman text was great (my pet peeve - professors who suck at making powerpoint slide shows). The movies he showed us every now and then were also very interesting.
Knowledgeable, challenging, thought producing, fair.

I'm not an athro major and took this class out of curiosity. Found it interesting and very informative. I enjoyed the lectures very much. think more regular quizzes or essays would be nice in this course. More chances to refresh your knowledge and boost your grade. With the tough and infrequent tests in the course, it'd be nice. The only low point of the course is the TA.

Dr. Bae challenges students and answers questions with other questions in order to get the students to think about it. he eventually answers the questions, but allows time for the students to learn and discover before he goes into detail.
I loved this course. Fascinating subject, great job by Dr. Bae. I think his cell phone policy is terrific. Maybe Dr. Bae can more strongly emphasize the requirement for hard work, and that it is not easier than biology, although he made it clear that if you don't come to class, take notes, pay attention and work hard, you will have a lot of difficulty, much less do well.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The lectures were always packed with information but supplemented well with powerpoints and pictures. Also, the classroom style where we can interrupt lectures to ask questions while on topic were very much appreciated.
I don't think the class size is usually so small, but I really enjoyed having a class with only seven people in it. It made it easier to learn as there was a lot more teacher/student interaction as well as more discussion within the class itself. I also liked the papers and doing oral presentations - I think doing your own outside research for a topic often allows you to learn a lot more than just attending lecture.
Everything is still changing with the new technology we develop.
Having such a small amount of students in the course
Again, all of it. I loved this course. It all comes together and makes sense.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Buying the textbook was probably the least valuable aspect of the course because after the second exam I have not read from it because it seems that the entirety of our grade is dependent on lecture.
no complaints
Everything was valuable. It it all incredibly interconnected.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think a little less information in his powerpoints and lecture could help in the absorption of information. At times I felt I was bombarded with facts and figures that weren't necessarily important to understanding broader ideas and concepts.
Have more hands on activities.
I don't know that he can. It was all fascinating, and not easy. A lot of work, but a great course.

Bae made each lecture captivating through use of examples and these examples had practical application to the modern world. I felt this is valuable because it offers me a very broad, yet at the same time condensed view of the term "race" which is highly important for my major.

Learning what is race and what defines it if possible.
The way this course combined social constructs of race as well as the biology was extremely well done. I also appreciated the way the requirements for the WI aspect of the class were spaced out, guaranteeing that anybody could do a good job and complete the task.

The power point presentations.
The videos definitely helped a lot. They were more interesting than most videos shown in anthropology classes and helped to visualize concepts shown in class. I also think it was really helpful that Dr. Bae often would ask us why we thought something was instead of just telling it and making it an hour worth of straight lecture.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
It's unfortunate that the grade is based off of only two tests. It's a very difficult course and maybe people would average higher grades in the class if a portion of the grade was a paper of some sort to demonstrate the knowledge that we have gained in the course.
we got the study guides a day and a half before the test. even though we had the notes, it is nice to get it a little earlier

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I feel that he teaches this course to the best of his abilities. He is a very motivated and passionate professor.
I feel that making some classes have short group discussions in certain areas can help students in focusing on the main points that are usually found on the tests. While Professor Bae may state that some information is important to know, each student may not remember well and having them recall these points over the semester may help ingrain it in their minds.

more discussion, thoughtfulness in lectures, interactive portions, etc.
Go just a little bit slower on the slides. Sometimes I get caught up writing so fast that I forget to comprehend the material.

For a lecture class, Dr. Bae really makes it fun and involves the class. He also is very willing to work with those who are struggling. He's willing to work with athletes that miss some classes, which is a really nice change from those that don't seem to care at all.

Everything was explained well, all details regarding the structure and etc.. of the class were straight-forward. Prof. Bae has a great teaching style. His test structures are known from the begining. He explains, the tests come straight from the lectures and to study strategically. Which you can do. Some of his multiple choice questions can be 'zingers' or 'curve balls' but its okay. Prof. Bae is the epitome of keeping students on their toes, while teaching in a friendly, insightful, interactive lecture style.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The lectures.
Going to class was mandatory in receiving a good grade overall for understanding the material. Tests were strictly off of the notes gone over in lecture so there was no need to purchase a textbook. This saves money and lots of time for reading as concepts are clearly taught in lecture.
His teaching style.
This course covered a broad swath of knowledge pulling in concepts from many fields including biology, geology, history, medicine, genetics, archaeology and botany.
The owerpoint preentations were excellent. Alwasy plenty of photos, charts maps, etc to help the student visualize the concepts.
I value the fact that this class challenges my intelligence. I feel as though I always learn something new.
The information which was presented was all extremely valuable and very interesting.
Going to the lectures because they were very interesting.
The most valuable was re-learning A LOT of basic things about genetics, anatomy and evolution that I had forgotten or never really understood to my full potential. I was able to better understand important scientific aspects of people and the world, and I was able to make greater connections with other classes and readings, and especially in my Physical Anthro Lab.
all
lecture and lab, and discussions on the subject.
hominins were pretty interesting, i wasn't aware of how many early ancestors we had.
I enjoyed learning about the primate evolution
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The textbooks.
Again, coming to class is mandatory for understanding and a good grade overall. If you aren't the type of student that doesn't like to attend class, this course is NOT recommended because you will not be successful.
The days right before each exam. He would pass out study guides and ask if there were any questions. But after a pretty short period of time, we were free to go, so those days were not terribly productive.
None really, except so much information to absorb.
I hate the time of the class but I don't think there is much that can be done about that.
Not being able to use electronics in the class.
None
Everything was extremely valuable. I just wish we spent less time on human anatomy and more time on primates, hominids, or getting deeper into biological anthropology. But that is more of a matter of time.
the tests were ridiculous. 300 terms and only 1.5 days to study.

With so much important materials gievn on the class, it will be better if we have some handouts or PDF files from power-point used in the class.
I think the way he does things works perfectly. I would not mind if we could access his powerpoints in other places but it does make you attend class, which we should do anyway. :)

No comment. I enjoyed it and it was better than I expected so I cannot comment on improvement because I wasn't expecting to walk out of this course alive. The fact that I am and I learned a lot compared to students before me under different professors must mean that there already has been significant improvement.
more time with the study guides
the final was a week before finals week, and this was really upsetting to me since I'm taking credit overload. The week we had the final, I had numerous papers due for many other classes so I had only 3 hours available to study.

The lectures were chock-full of information. At first we could not write fast enough to keep up but he slowed the pace during the semester. He did try to encourage discussion, eliciting ideas from as many who were willing to speak up - even partially-formed ideas were treated with humor. For a 200 level course, I gave more time and effort than a three-credit 200 level course gives credit for.
AMAZING COURSE! All I heard before taking this course was how hard it was and how bad the teacher was.... Yes it was a different teacher that taught me the material, but it was extremely informative and very very very very interesting.
The course was hard and challenging, and you have to work and put effort into it, and the professor sticks to this without altering and I believe it should be this way. The TA was great as a buffer, and though sticking to the same challenging concepts, he helped as much he could and honestly tried to give us as much points as possible.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professor Bae clearly and thoughtfully presented class material through concise slides and lectures. He was also able to answer impromptu questions in ways that were understandable and relevant to the course material.
Coming to class is essential in obtaining a good grade since everything that is taught in lecture goes on the test. Purchasing a textbook is not required since all test material comes from the lecture notes. This is time consuming as well as a money saver.
lectures well constructed and well presented. use of 3 non cumulative exams was also good.
The whole course presented future value, making no specific section more or less valuable than the other.
Everthing was very valuable.
during class questions would be asked to us that in a sense were a daily dose of what was to come on the tests. as well as the way the class was structured via 3 major topics in human origins. overall it was these two ways in which the class was most valuable and helpful in my passing with a good grade
updates on new finds including austrolophiths
Professor Bae provided his students with informative lectures that aided in my learning of the subject matter. Personally I really enjoy this topic, so coming to class each day was a pleasure.
Instructor was very knowledgeable on the course, lectures were often very engaging and interesting.
I enjoyed this class initially because it assumes that evolution of humans is true. I agree with this however, I feel most classes have to walk the line between school and religion whereas this course abolishes the idea of religion as creation from the beginning.
Enjoied and learned alot from watching the videos
Dr. Bae made it extremely clear what information was pertinent and insisted that we committed it to memory so that it could be applied to broader concepts concerned with human evolution. By so doing all the students were able to have informed discussions about related topics. He really made sure we had the right tools to intelligently discuss all of the issues raised.
All
The build upon techniques used
I would say that all the aspects of the course were valuable.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The textbook.
Attending class is a must to pass the class and if you don't like to attend class then you will most likely not pass with a good grade. Powerpoints are not posted online for the purpose of attending class which i think is reasonable.
text book...it had so much petential as the course is so interesting and while it is comprehensive and full of relevant information it could use some colourful pictures or something to make it more read-able
N/A
Though i did not mind the two writing assignments, it seemed that their freedom of topic made it less applicable to the class. if this were a little more narrow i feel i could have been able to apply my paper to what i was learning in a better and stronger way.

Not being able to view the power points on your own, like on laulima. It helps to see the material and study from it because sometimes you miss things while you are taking notes.
The videos were a little silly, but they still helped put things in context, so there weren't entirely unvaluable.
i can not think of an aspect that was least valuable
Confusing details.
None were "least valuable," though printouts of the slides would be helpful because sometimes the professor clicks through the slides too quickly.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He could perhaps distribute test-prep handouts slightly earlier, for the sake of my stress-levels and sanity.
If anything he can post the powerpoints online, but that would defeat the purpose of him wanting students to attend class on a daily basis. He is actually helping the students out in that sense. Electronics are also not allowed, so he goes by an "old school" type of teaching which you write all your notes down with pen and paper. I feel this is good in the way that students don't have a reason to drift off in class and full attention on the professor.
perhaps making some of the examples that are pictures or charts accessible online as while we can write all the information sometimes it is less relevant when the picture is absent, and pictures/fossils/graphs/charts can not be drawn so well (atleast not by me anyway). also real fossil specimens would be cool to show traits and evolution of them.
Improvement is not needed, he teaches the course effectively and challenges the knowledge given to us with tests and essays.
Put the powerpoints online. Sometimes he went to fast in class and if you miss a slide you never get to see it again.
Though the power point is great if it varied a little from time to time it might make it seem less repetitive and easier to not essentially "zone" out.
less rushing through lecture.I would've enjoyed spending more time on theories or debates within the practice. If we spent more time on essay topics then perhaps less people would fail the first test.
I can't think of anything he can change. He is open to students, and teaches the material in a clear and understandable.
I would like to have slower lectures but, there is an abundance of information to cover. The class is pretty hard too.
More pictures in the lectures so the students can see what you are talking about as well
Dr. Bae is an incredibly informative man who NEVER talks down to students or disregards their questions. He presents the material in an interesting and efficient way. Whenever a student presents a question that he isn't sure about he looks it up and consistently returns to the next class with an answer. Plus, he's a really approachable guy.
He is excellent all around
I would say that he is an excellent professor and the only thing that could be improved would be to make printouts of the slides available in class because he tends to flip through them faster than some people can write.

22. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think he does a great job as is.
If the class lectures were provided in a PDF accessible to the student, class time can be spent paying attention as opposed to paying attention and scribbling notes that you would hope were legible later.
I think that Professor Norton is a great teacher. He is friendly and he has found a balance between having students respect and enjoy is class while at the same time challenging them. He seems to enjoy what he does and this in turn interest students. I do how ever feel that the his format for testing could be change in order to better evaluate how much students really learned. For example he often would have matching questions, to match a persons name with his or her book/key concepts. All that is important in studying for this type of question is word association. Actually understanding the concepts or what the book was about it not tested and this is a shame because in the end gaining knowledge of the subject matter is more important than just memorizing associated words. In addition the study guide provided is not really a study guide it is just a list of every possible term that could appear on the test. I think that if Professor Norton gave slight more indication of what to focus more or less on it would push students to examine the content of the course more in depth. This is because when you know what to focus on you can narrow in and truly understand that particular issue, yet if students are given a long list of terms all appearing to hold equal weight they are much more likely to just skim the surface of the the issues and thus miss key points.
possibly give more time for the final presentations in the class
Different text book
Maybe, have a review session with the whole class to clarify anything we didn't understand or weren't sure about... that way we could all hear the questions and help ourselves study. but otherwise nothing, he was a great teacher and i loved this class.
