12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Being introduced to the various techniques and systems and their applications proved to be the most valuable aspects. This course forced me to critically assess our mentality in regards to "Sustainable" systems. |
| Things that is actually used and practiced in the real world, not just conceptual thinking. A lot of
important tools introduced in this class. |
| The readings were very helpful and the topics were relatable to modern design problems. |
| Just the lectures. |
| The books required were full of great information. |
| Being exposed to the different techniques of designing sustainable and thinking critically to improve design for the environment. |
| content of relativity to real world applications |
| It was all really interesting. |
| The textbooks were great resources |
| During the period of going over sections in Living Systems were most valuable
in my opinion because it gave me a better insight on understanding a few
topics such as : various ways of tackling a problem, the technicalities of
systems that involve landscaping, and sustainability. |
| Learning about projects that were actually implemented. |
| Learning about the sustainable systems used in landscape architecture and understanding
environmental issues |
| Program was designed well which help us understand the materials in a time line fashion. |
| living systems book: it provided actual examples to look at for 341
leed vs breem area was veryhelpful for infomational purposes |
| Text books are very help to project |
| The exposure to different sustainable systems. |
| The most valuable aspect of this course was the information on sustainability. |
| Learning sustainable systems |
| readings |
| -LIVING SYSTEMS = GREAT FOR INSPIRATION FOR STUDIO PROJECTS; LEARNED ABOUT INNOVATION
THAT IS HAPPENING ALL OVER; OVERALL INTERESTING |
| The broad range of different types of systems learned. EX: Air Conditioning,
Green Roofs, Cradle to Cradle Concept |
| The case studies on existing "green" development. |
| The textbooks were valuable because they contain information about various projects focusing on architecture systems. |
| I found the readings to be most valuable. |
| The Area of living systems, I found were most interesting. Rather then a
physical model project itself. I wish we could have researched different
systems and formulated it into a form of a report. |
| All aspects of sustainable, living systems. These technologies and design techniques are absolutely
vital for our future as local Architects. |
|
|
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Despite being introduced to the subject matter, I felt that we lacked the "technical" knowledge, that is the construction of the systems. |
| The part where we go into groups, because people usually end up talking stories and get out of
subject. |
| The tests |
| Some of the quizzes could have been returned for study material |
| With the title of this course being "systems," I thought we would learn about more structures that we learned about in 320. It was good to learn the stuff we had, just thought we would learn technical stuff leaning towards structure. |
| thesis writting |
| Although Kris meant well, I believe that integrating theses were unnecessary. |
| n/a |
| learning how to write a thesis for a system's class. |
| thesis section |
| quiz... |
| The lack of in-depth understanding of the structure of the systems. Topics
are constantly changing, fast paced, brief explanations. |
| The least valuable how we spent 3 weeks on thesis statements. |
| None |
| HW assignments that were not readings |
| Learning about city of Leon
Almost no connection between learning green roofs and air conditioning
systems |
| the "green" development |
| The higher emphasis on things outside of construction systems was too focused on. I appreciate our investigations in to various green designs out of the textbooks but I found myself wanting more in terms of understanding the structural systems. |

28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Palagi is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the course material and very engaging during class. |
| He helps us dig deep into our thinking and formulate good work. |
| He is very concise in his explanations and is always willing to help. |
| His insight on the subject at hand |
| His teaching style. |
| Very energetic about the topics in class. Always giving opinions about how things should be done and ways we're able to process our thinking to end with satisfying results. |
| His enthusiasm =) as always |
| He is very informative and knowledgeable. |
| Very enthusiastic about what he's teaching. He makes sure you know the content with mini quizzes. |
| He can deliver the knowledge really well |
| Very knowledgeable and easy to approach |
| Kris has the ability to have provide various solutions to the same problem
and is always available to answer questions. |
| he addressed a variety of content in sustainability such as the livings systems and architecture and
understanding what is LEED and BRREAM |
| Very helpful after class, always explained him self very well. He is easy to understand and is
able related to the materials is cover in class. |
| Ability to explain how the systems work and how they can be applied to
different situations.
Challenges students to think critically. |
| His way of teaching the material keeps everyone interested. |
| The way he repeats what he says if we didn't get it |
| his jokes |
| - UNDERSTANDS STUDENTS AND HOW WE THINK; THEREFORE, IS ABLE TO COMMUNICATE SO THAT
WE CAN ALWAYS EASILY COMPREHEND THE MATERIAL
- PUSHES US TO MAKE IT ON TIME TO CLASS |
| When a question is asked he not only answers them thoroughly, but I feel that
I always learn more information.
Excellent energy for every lecture given. |
| His willingness to go beyond expectations when asking for help on a confusing matter. |
| He was available for discussions after class about the material he presented. I also enjoyed learning about different sustainable systems around the world, which helped broaden my view of what sustainable architecture is about. |
| His advice when were discussing in groups how we compare each systems
differently. The positive and negative. |
| I like the fact that he gives us a chance to develop our own critical eye. |
| He is passionate about sustainable and living systems and wants to pass that enthusiasm on to the
students. He is clear and straightforward and doesn't tiptoe around anything or contradict himself.
Excellent instructor. |
|
|
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Slight inconsistency in the time he starts class. |
| No field trips:) |
| Attitude |

the class. |

their importance to Hawaii's built environment. |
|
|
30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| Deliver quiz questions more slowly and review them slightly slower. |
| I believe that his teaching style and methods should stay the same. |
| Improve on how you talk to your students |
| His quizzes could have been more beneficial if he returned them for students
to review. |
| Include additional short essay papers that not only include a thesis statement and an argument, but talking about different sides to the positives and negative of designing sustainable. |
| It seemed a little disorganized. I just feel like it was a little mix matched content wise. I think to
improve is to really have an outline of the topics of the course. |
| More videos and slide show presentations |
| continue with the teaching of architecture systems than sustainable systems to undergraduates |
| mini projects, and have a feel how connections works. Actually learn what is system is. |
| No improvements needed. |
| Pick a couple of systems and do a in-depth analysis. Explain the constructional of the structural systems. Provide more informational
lectures. |
| need some hand on projects |
| stick to a syllabus. |
| Wanted to learn more about how a structure can stand up through working
systems but course was suddenly changed to sustainability topics |
| Organized agenda, and more guest lectures. |
| There should be more images that show architecture systems and the course should focus on that because then the students who are only staying for 4 years have a better grasp of structural systems than now. |
| Clearer syllabus or assignments. Other than that, no complaints. |

36. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| This was a very enriching course. It helped me flesh out and define the various terms frequently thrown around by those not educated in such material. This courese forced me to think critically in about the subject matter. |
| A great class! |
| that all the information helped me to think more critically and relate more to problems that we
designers face. |
| It was ok |
| Great course |
| Good. Good teachings of broadening our knowledge of how to design using natural resources and fighting of how things that were done were correct or not. |
| Didn't know what to expect with the system change to environmental emphasis, but overall learned
some of the 'system' things in detail, required for further understanding of architecture as a whole. |
| Very interesting, however not what I was expecting from a systems course. I have stopped using
plastic bags at the grocery store and I've been scared away from disposable water bottles, but I
don't know how to make a building stand up which seems a bit more important to an architecture
student. |
| This class was excellent and I would recommend it to others |
| This systems class was good, but in comparison to 320 (which I took in the
previous semester) I think that it was lacking a bit learning wise. In 320,
there were mini-projects assigned giving us the hands-on experience of
learning the material. And for some people, such as myself, learning hands-
on is very helpful because not all of all absorb the material the same way.
I'm not saying that Kris, should assign mini-projects for the next 321
course, but keep in mind that there are different types of learners :). |
| This course was a good introduction to sustainable systems and environmental issues in landscape
architecture. However, application how the technical issues cane be applied for the undergraduate
studios. |
| Not great, I was hoping to learn what is systems and how things work with connection with
materials. All we did was learn how to write a thesis statements, and have mini quiz about books we
read in class. I felt this class was a waste of my time because I didn't learn anything about systems
and how this connected or even works. All I can say is that we learn how to write a thesis, and learn
ing about green roofs. I wish we had mini projects, the mini project helps me understand how things
work. I get to see and figure out how to build and even solve the problem if things are wrong. |
| Recommend any student to take his class. |
| The content of the class provides an outline for environmental design. The
course addresses the problem, different designs attempting to solve the
issue, and basic understanding of certain systems. |
| Great. Very interesting and valuable to building inputs and sustainability |
| A good class that respects the busy schedules of architecture students. |
| GOOD CLASS. I LOVED THE LIVING SYSTEMS PART OF THE COURSE. THE PROJECTS FOUND IN THE
BOOK INSPIRE ME FOR FUTURE PROJECTS AND KEPT ME INTERESTED DURING CLASS TIME. |
| Fun |
| Its a pointless course and the fact that we are forced to learn about sustainability before structure
disgust me. It seems like priorities aren't being set right in the current system. |
| Excellent with room for improvement. |
| I enjoyed this course. I now I acquire two great ebooks I plan to reference
and utilize in future projects. |
| quizzes were the majority of this course which I found most helpful. It
helped you to understand and study the concepts a whole lot more. |
| Excellent course. Far more valuable than simply studying AC function/Mechanical systems. Living
and sustainable systems are without a doubt the future of our field and we as Architects have a
responsibility to utilize them. The days of concrete and glass boxes being pumped with AC/Heat and
artificial lighting are over. We need to focus on Passive Design and Sustainability. Designing
structures that are not only beautiful and dynamic, but functional and environmentally responsible. |
|
|
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| This is the Systems B course, however in the course we were merely introduced to the various techinical, "sustainable" systems. We did not learn about their construction nearly as much as I would have liked. |
| I like the way it is. |
| Assignments, projects to help us understand the course material |
| I feel having a requires assignment of the registration process for LEED
would be very beneficial. |
| Include more essays to incorporate analyzed thinking. Include two mini projects that will summarize the course. |
| More videos and examples |
| I stated it in the previous question. |
| Explain how many points are the daily quiz worth.
maybe provide visuals or presentations in class |
| This course could be improved by having some hands on projects. |
| have one main book. |
| A GRADE UPDATE PERIODICALLY WOULD BE BENEFICIAL AND APPRECIATED. |
| Eliminated from the required program and moved to an elective. |
| The course should focus more on structural systems. Images of architecture design placing an emphasis on structural systems being part of the design should be presented with the systems information. |
| Clarification as to course content and assignment overviews. Also, assignment clarification. Once
again, I feel this course was invaluable, it just needs to be solidified and assignments need to be
clearly outlined. |
|
|
38. Other comments:
|
| I enjoyed this course very much and find myself strangely disappointed in that there is no longer a Systems C course. I would like to further be instructed in the proper use for various systems. |
| Kristopher Palagi is an awesome instructor. |
| Keep up the good work Palagi! |
| I appreciated the lack of projects interfering with studio. |
| The class is great. I'm glad Kris is teaching it because he has a way of
stimululating the class at times. |

| maybe this classe should be renamed? 371 : intro living construction system |
| Only complaint is that we never received any sort of grade check or midterm standing. To this day I
have no idea as to my grade/standing. But it seems that this is more and more common in the SoA
(Dont know why...) Im not here for the grades. To be honesty I'd happily take a B in a course where I
learned more than one where I received an A with little educational benefit. But grades dictate our
academic standing/financial aid/scholarship status. Something I cannot afford to lose! Im just asking
for the SoA faculty to think about that. Aloha. |

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Weekly discussions helped lead us down the correct path in considering
different aspects of our project. For example, code requirements turned from
a burden into a design aspect. |
| I really enjoyed how he pushed us. Taking our designs one step further forward. And learning
how to do parts of design I had never done before |
| The most valuable fact about the SoA's regulation is, that the course was split into two parts. That has the following reasons:
Instead of a full semester, there is only half the time available to make a design. The advantage is, that the student has to focus in a shorter amount of time on a project and it doesn't get as boring as if one has to do a design for 4 months.
The other reason, why I think it is a good decision, is because there were different focusses on the two parts:
The first one was about hand drawing, creating study models with the aim to make a preliminary design. The second one was to take a preliminary design and further refine it, which means to make the building "real": Building details, sections, questions about envelope, materiality structure or light came up. Also, the legal side of architecture was covered: Building codes, regulationsâ?¦etc. |
| The most valuable aspects of this course is learning how to design
architecture based on experience instead of what looks good such as a birds
eye perspective. This course gave me an introduction of the important
details that is to be expected in the real life situation (i.e. design
changes, IBC, ADA). I learned that as architects we are able to design at all
scales. (i.e. site perspective, floor plan perspective, door/window/wall/etc.
connections). Another aspect that was valuable is to be optimistic about
things, and finding what I like of things that I created and making them
better. |
| - one on one critique of my work
- pointing out work that are successful as guides for the rest
- different approach to design other than the traditional working with a concept... i mean, what we discovered from line drawings lead us into the concept after
- emphasis on "refinement"
- emphasis on filtering and show only important stuff |
| The professor's knowledge of a specific topic is extensive. |
| Ability to think positively when put in a difficult situation |
| I felt that the studio was great in pushing us to think outside of the box. Kris encouraged
us to think of new possibilities in how and what architecture is. |
| I felt that this course gave me a lot of real world situations. I thought that switching projects half way through this semester was a bad idea, but in reality thats what actually happens in the working world. Also we focused on building codes and structure which I felt was very necessary because up until now I haven't had any experience in that. |
| everything, this is including the extra notes and magasines. |
| The ability to adopt another project and develop a liking for it. I
understood that the more attached you get the more effort and time you put
into it. |
| The design approach methods and settling on design statements as our goals. |
|
|
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Some of the presentations we did could have been more time-efficient and more conducive if we presented to each other in smaller groups and then gave
suggestions to each other on how to improve. |
| So many concept models. I don't work well in that way so it was hard to develop ideas that
way |
| What I consider least valuable is the fact, that the course is Mondays and Fridays, which means, that one has to work a lot on the weekend for next class. If it was Mondays and Wednesdays, there would be less time between Monday and Wednesday, but between Wednesday and Monday there would be way more time to work on the project. It would also be possible to have a more flexible time management, especially when there is a lot of work to do for other classes, too. |
| There was nothing that was least valuable. |
| - not emphasizing students to have a floor plan for their final presentation
- switching projects, i was looking forward to developing what i learned from the mid-term presentation (however it was stimulating though) |
| Although this knowledge is extensive, I struggled with the layout of the class and how that
information was disseminated. I think there could be a bit more rigorous investigation into how
much time is spent on each portion of the curriculum. |
| Lack of consistency and poor leadership |
| I don't think any part of the course was least valuable but I do wish we would spend a
bit more time on the cOnstruction and detail portion of the second half. It was interesting
to figure out different connections and I would have loved to explore it a bit more in
studio with the aid of the professor |
| I thought that we took too long on the conceptual parts of the projects, i think i would have gained more if concepts and designs were limited to 2 weeks. |
| nothing really |
| Sometimes he seemed sort of all over the place, especially if he started talking about his own projects. |

28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Professor Palagi is always willing to talk about my project and offer really
helpful suggestions and advice. |
| Same |
| He always give to me good advice. |
| Professor Palagi was very interested in developing a student's own individual style. He quickly analyzed what a student was passionate about and wanted to make that the foundation of the design process. The result of that approach is, that the student has fun with working and designing, because one is working on something about one is passionate about.
Professor Palagi encouraged and inspired me to continue with my design and to trust my own ideas.
Why I think Professor Palagi did an excellent job, is because he taught me a new approach of design. With the SAE statements, I was forced to design on three different scales: Relation of building (material) to site, building to user and building to material. At the same time, I was forced to think about the importance of the envelope, the structure and the light in the building. The idea was to design the actual atmosphere in a certain space and how the user experiences the space. In a lot of studio projects I did before, there was just one of the three scales further developed . I have never designed with this approach and I realized, that the approach with those threee scales only enriches the design of a building/ space.
Another fact is, that Professor Palagi set up a good time management for the studio. There was definitely enough time for the different assignments. The assignments were challenging and expected all my creativity, but it was definitely possible in the amount of time he gave us.
Furthermore, the creation of a lot of study models improved our designs. In no other class/studio before, I had to make so many models. Most of the time, there was just a model to be done for the final presentation, which had to be perfect. The big advantage of those study models is, that one can get better spatial relationships, a better understanding of the created space and it is fun to make those. There is also space for experiments. Additionally, the idea of working with real materials instead of just cardboard, gave a very good understanding of the connection and handling of those materials, which wouldn't have been possible, if we would have just designed on "the paper".
Another point I want to stress is how we learned how to make better and more vivid hand drawings.
My last point is the relation to the professional world. Switching student's projects, having to give away the own project and getting another person's project is challenging. To make the best out of it, is also important in the real world. |
| Kristopher Palagi was always available for feedback and enthusiastic about improvement, moving forward in a design, and making it better. |
| - creative approach to design such as deriving a concept from line drawings
- emphasizing the idea of refinement
- his feedback challenged me to better understand design and be more creative |
| He is an intelligent and passionate individual. |
| His enthusiasm. It is nice to see how excited a professor gets about a project or your
work because it in turn pumps you up to do your best. |
| I found that Kris was always in and out of studio on non studio days which made it easy for students to ask him for help. |
| he is very energetic and have great ideas. always around even when there is no studio |
| Most valuable from Professor Palagi was the attention to detail, I kind of
understood of what he wanted at the end of the project. But the importance
of detail was hardly touched on in other studios. He at least tried to make
us become aware of it. |
| Kris always has ideas about your projects to share with you so you can see things in a new light and realize that no, you hadn't boxed yourself into a corner. |
|
|
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Certain aspects of studio were geared heavily towards graphic representation
rather than design. |
| Same |
| Sometimes, Professor Palagi is a little bit impatient at desk crits, even when there were still some reasonable questions. |
| n/a |
| - not making sure that students have a solid grasp of their concept and its manifestations in the design |
| I think your passions are very strictly focused. This is not a bad thing, the only recommendation I
have is at the graduate level, perhaps it is important to allow the student's specific passions be
evoked and even if it is not a strong interest of yours, please allow us to pursue it anyway. As an
example, I will use a trivial topic of SketchUp. You personally despise SketchUp and jokingly (or
perhaps not) mentioned that if we used SketchUp this semester you would fail us. I think that is an
acceptable concept in undergrad as students are still learning how to operate effectively in arch
school but in grad school, please let us be big kids and make our own decisions. If you are willing
and able to facilitate our learning whatever the focus, you will be a wonderful graduate level
professor, but until then, you are still treating us like first year students. We are far more developed
than that. |
| Often left class early, long before class time was finished. Rarely stopped by studio for a
significant time outside of studio hours. Poor choice on project selection for second half of the
semester. Focused too much on composition and did not allow for a deeper understanding of
the project. |
| I think at times the help was a little abstract. By this I mean that we went from being a bit
more constrained and realistic with projects to being highly creative so at times we were
a bit confused as to what was being asked of us. It's not quite a negative thing as it did
propel us to think on a different level it was just a bit stressful at times. But isn't that
architecture anyways haha |
| none |
| Maybe a little lenient on myself. |
| He's a little in love with himself. But that might just be how his confidence comes off. |
|
|
30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| Towards the end of the course, we began signing up for one-on-one sessions
which was very helpful to know what day and what time we were going to check-
in with him on our process. If this was implemented from the beginning of the
semester, that would have been great. |
| None |
| As students, I feel that we could use a set time to practice sketching
styles. |
| - put greater emphasis on a "concept" as the driving force for the design
- explain from the beginning that design can be inspired from anything, even the line drawings we started off with.. it was interesting toward the end of mid-term but i wish there was much emphasis on it from the beginning.. such as Jon Utzon's church inspired by the waves at northshore... it's one of my favorite prescedent whenever i think of manifesting my concept in my design.. |
| My only suggestion would be a mini crash course on presentation and drawings. I believe
students would benefit from having a quick lesson on how to present work and what to
present. |
| I think that if Kris wants us to focus more on using revit he should have held a class on making revit families because I think a lot of us took a lot of time trying to teach ourselves through videos. |
| I think for me what would have helped if we had class on Wednesday or adding
a third day, so that we could spend more time with the professor. |
| If he says say, that we're going to meet in X classroom in 10 min, or talk about something in an hour, don't then start early. I know I would go to print or go to the bathroom or something and come back and he'd started getting into things 20 minutes early. |

36. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| This class was challenging but not overwhelming. |
| Very good |
| I really enjoyed this class. I like designing building and make model.
Studio is always helpful for architecture student. But I really want to study more about detail. |
| ... very high. Professor Palagi provided a studio of very high-level of quality, which was challenging on the one hand and very creative, inspiring, individual and a lot of fun on the other hand. |
| This course went above and beyond, taking my skills to a new level and picked
up a few new skills along the way. |
| - a great step that deepened my understanding of architecture... |
| Poor |
| I thought this course was great. I learned a lot about structure, how materials can be used, and building codes. I also learned and was able to focus on design through connections. |
| i really like this course, I was surprised when we changed project, but overall I learn to just move
forward with what I like the best about it. |
| It was challenging because it focused more on structures and codes compared
to other studio classes. |
|
|
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Instead of requiring conceptual models, it would have been interesting to
have the requirement be up to each student's discretion. For example, some
people may be able to represent their concept in a different art form; hand
sketch, photoshop illustration, painting, etc. |
| The most difficult part is the models but helping the students balance their time would also be
good because some students don't know when to stop designing and start producing finished
work |
| Design
Structure |
| This course could be improved by having the students sketch the experience of
spaces. |
| - start class at 12 30 (class ending at 6 pm was always kind of late for me) |
| Use less time on concepts and try to reduce design time. Then I think students can focus on detailing their work more. |
|
|

| my lap top was broken two weeks before the final presentation and was never able to be fixed up to now... i lost all my work even in my other classes so i had to start all over in most parts...
for studio, i still had my ideas in my head and i borrowed friends lap tops and used the computer lap back and forth for renderings as my friends lap tops were slow and never had some important programs installed.. lucky i had some friends who helped me out with installation of rhino, v-ray and grasshopper... i don't complain so that's why i never let my professor know but i just feel like that it's needed to inform the teacher about this...
i'm just saying i could have had a better outcome for my presentation...
thanks |
| I think this professor would be better suited for an undergraduate course, I do not think he is
qualified to teach graduate level. |

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| the one on one was always good. |
| I believe that the way that he introduced each assignments and had us fight through the
techniques and understanding of what was needed help us developed skills in decision
making and pushing ourselves to our true potential. |
| Learning concepts and skills that i never used before. |
| The hands-on crafting projects developed an understanding of concepts such as a realistic look at objects, composition, the use of lighting and shadows, threshold, etc. |
| Building the human clone and all the different models helped me understand the fundamentals of the different art forms that architect need to create, develop, and refine ideas to create buildings. |
| The fact that we all got to work together, though it was only 9 of us instead of a regular 60-student studio, we all shared some ideas. |
| Every project was clearly outlined with its expectations and intended learning outcomes. Continuation and layering of the projects helped to bring forth deeper understanding of the process and of design concepts. |
| The most valuable was to enhance my skills such as making model and thinking positive, negative space. |
|
|
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| none |
| What exactly was wanted in the outcome was not always clear, though with time and practive an understanding developed. |
| Using the clay didn't help relate to understanding threshold. If you instructed the class to build using the cardboard with the triangles, that would have been far more effective. |
| class size was too small, and projects were rushed because of the summer schedule. Oh, and the class was too long, 6 hours in the afternoon and staying til 6pm is too long. We should have this studio in the morning time. |

28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Kristopher Palagi helped to let everyone express theme selves in a
constructive and organized way. patient non-violent person and he tells you
what type of person he is from the beginning of class so the level of
understanding is established earlier than in any other normal class here at
uh manoa where you typically dont know who or what the intentions are of the
instructors until its already too late to adapt. |
| What I found to be the most valuable and helpful thing for me with Mr. Palagi was the fact
that I can express my opinion and what I believed in to him and he showed me how I can
use what I liked about my work and also grow and develop further skills and view points in
which help me expand my horizons and challenge and push myself further. |
| Helped share his experiences in the field of architecture in a realistic way. Helped me improve my
projects to make it work. |
| Really into the subject, easy to talk to, and very knowledgeable. |
| That he made the class constantly making models. The more models I did the greater understanding I found on the subjects he was teaching. |
| he was able to guide us to evolve in every project that we had done instead of keeping the same idea the whole way, so that we were able to change and pick out one specific part of our composition that we liked or that worked and evolve from that. |
| KrisP is evidently very knowledgeable about his area of expertise, a good reference for questions about the field or, and extremely helpful in class.
Importantly, he is very enthused about his work, other's work and architecture in general, his attitude not only creates a atmosphere of engaged learning but it also tends to make students feel just in the same.
Good resource, ask him questions about everything. including everything you want to know about chuck taylors. |
|
|
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Sort of unorganized and we spent a lot of money useless supplies for class. |
| Criticisms, recomendations, and comments of work were sometimes confusing |
| Nothing in particular. |
| he could have been more approachable and not be so critical with out own design compositions. |
|
|
30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| he likes coffee.maybe a coffee machine . |
| more organization and being more prepared. |
| Pretty good course overall, had fun |
| Try to talk to the students more about their project and see whats on their mind. If he would just stop by and strike up a conversation I could have gotten more ideas on where to go on the project. |
| be more understanding of our own opinions of what our designs should be like. Or put our own signature in it. |
| Having taken this course during the summer session, the press for time is something heavily taken into consideration. Most often class time was spent working on projects, etc. Several times class was spent in an highly interactive environment where palagi would guide us through some exercises. I don't know what else to say besides it. helped. a. ton. |

36. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| perfect |
| I enjoyed the assignments and learning new things and working with different materials. |
| It was fair and it made me see architecture in a different way and i was able to pick up new sills that
i didn't know i had. |
| awesome |
| Overall, as my first architectural class, it was interesting and enlightening. Mr. Palagi would tell the class how it was to be an architect and what we would be getting into. The projects seemed rush or quick but it made scene since this was a summer school course. |
| This is a great way to test your design skills and how you can communicate your work to your classmates and teacher. |
| Course was excellent, learned a lot, 2500 characters will not do justice.
Perspective of architecture and outlook on the world around us is constantly changing and this course has helped lead that perspective into an even more empowering and delighted viewpoint.
K-P is the man. |
| I had a good time. In fact,I never have studied architecture programs. Though this time, I was too interesting and I had enjoy time. Also, I made many projects by using materials such as basswood, museum board-white, and foam core-black. Based on my clone, I have studied many concepts and meanings. Also through the course, I want to study more detail program in advanced class. But I had troubles in class. English was not my first language. Therefore, it was too difficult to understand project, meanings, and what I should do. Before I start project, i have to see and look project which my classmates are making. Because of the reason, I could not make my creative model and i did not have enough idea to design buildings. But through change to take this class, I decided to study more method of design and architecture. Thank you for your teaching.! |
|
|
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| maybe a better use of the parking structure so that more students that pay
for tuition at uh manoa and cant get a parking permit , can find decent
parking. |
| More examples of models |
| Being organized. |
| The summer school course could be improved if you would further explain consents he would like us to develop. Not using the clay as an excursive to understand threshold would be better to use cardboard. |
| We should have this class offered in the morning instead of late afternoon. The hours should be shorten from 6 hours to at least 3 hours. |
| Class exercises with the instructor was helpful.
Summer courses for architecture studios could possibly be extended? A few more weeks perhaps? There are several pros and cons to having taken studio in the summer. Again lots of pros but some negatives included having to little time to reach the full extent of a project, and other things that revolve around time. I feel that an even more in-dept understanding could have been reached in some areas, but the summer school route always come with these trade-offs so no argument here. |
|
|
38. Other comments:
|
| fix the parking problem. i already pay tuition and all kinds of other fees i
shouldnt have to pay for parking system to maintain something that is apart
of the school.during the summer there was plenty of room for the 4 people who
were in my class and had a car. |
| Don't leave for trips during class days because i could have really used your help. |
| Fun course, its hard, stressful, and agonizing but i enjoyed it. |
| Overall, good class. |
| A surround sound system for the studio. nice.
and can someone please look into installing snack vending machines in the arch bldg. please. ugh. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| I think that Kristopher Palagi's enthusiasm about this course was the most
useful. It helped me to be more interested in the course material and want to
learn additional information. |
| His enthusiastic take on the course material made it easier to grasp. |
| Always available for help |
| he's on a social level with me. easier to learn from someone you talk to,
rather than someone who's just lecturing. |
| His knowledge in the course material |
| Very knowledgable and easy to talk to. |
| Palagi's lectures were extremely helpful. |
| He's very thorough in his lessons |
| His in tuned feedback on each project. The comments were always elaborated with concepts that
would never arise unless a project is presented. Especially in projects that stepped outside of the
usual boundaries of what was expected. |
| his enthusiasm for the course and the students |
| he communicate with us clearly. |
| His teaching techniques are enjoyable |
| His incite in each material. And the way you could design with it. |
| he is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, he explains how the material works through drawings and visual aids. |
| He walks around the class alot and involves the students though communication to individuals. |
| When sample of work online suggest how to construct the project |
| His knowledge |
| his enthusiasm and he would try to make sure you understood the concept if you had questions |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| I can not think of any negative things about Kristopher Palagi. |
| N/A |
| Starting the class early |
| none. |
| he teaches at a fast pace |
| cannot manage class time very well |
| He's vague and likes to be sneaky on tests |
| not enough depth of the material |
| not all of what he explained had a visual aid, could have had more or prepared certain items that would show how a space frame, for example worked and under what circumstances they would fail. |
| Non |
| None |
| sometimes he wasnt very clear about what he wanted from us in the assignments. Sometimes we
had no idea what he was expecting from us. |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| I think that a little additional homework would be helpful in broadening
course knowledge. |
| N/A |
| None |
| Don't make those tests again with the huge sheet of paper and a bunch of definitions/words on one
page!! It made it super confusing. |
| teach adn makes sure everyone knows it before moving on |
| Perhaps taking more outside tours which require students to come to class more often. |
| greater depth of wood steel and concrete not in the structural but what we
could create with it. But if it can't be explained let us expressively create
the limits of each material |
| have some more visual aids, take projects that did well from previous classes and show what is a "f" grade and what is a "a" grade. |
| Longer time period of class |
| None |
| all around the class was pretty great. No real big complaints. |

|
| I think that this course was very helpful and helped me gain a great deal of

| Fun, learned a lot |
| awesome course was a blast. however i just wish it was slightly longer i
could have learned alot more |
| a good introduction to systems, i am intrested but wish i could learn more. |
| I learned alot through this course though I feel that six months isn't enough time to fully grasps the
concepts covered thought the course. |
| excellent |
| Great |
| good class |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| I think that this course could be a little more helpful if there was a little
more work to help broaden knowledge and help understand the information
better. |
| i enjoyed the class, maybe only the time was a problem. I'd rather it have
been later. |
| Have a study guide for midterm. Use specific chapters in the textbook. |
| A little more field trips to see more variety of buildings/styles. Possibly off campus field trips. |
| It could be improved by stating grading policies better, knowing what we are going to do and when. |
| Perhaps more assignments in being able to play with each materials would have been nice. About 1
assignment for each material in the Wood, Metal, and concrete would have really forced the
students to get to know the materials better. I was able to play with the material, but it was very
self directed and personally because I wanted to spend more time on the material, i learned a little
more. |
| More depth of materials |
| read above comments |
| perhaps if the course involved some field trips to sites around Oahu. |
| The course could be improve by assigning more hands on projects and tour walk around campus.
Another would be a longer class, maybe over an hour or so. |
| Brief handouts for each lecture maybe? |
| more real life examples, maybe excursions or maybe even more hands on stuff |
|
|

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Everything discussed in studio were clear and helpful. The projects were definitely a different way of tackling a project which I enjoyed. |
| I enjoyed looking back at the progress I made (study models, drawings) |
| It was valuable that the projects we did this semester contributed to the design portfolio and met a lot of the portfolio standards. |
| Designing in section |
| I really liked the idea of designing in section. I felt the exploration of spatial sequencing was very
very interesting. It taught us to think in a different dimension and to get away from designing
strictly in plan. |
| photoshop tutorials and passive system reviews |
| I found that in this course we had to design in section rather than plan
which i benefited from, because we have not done this in the past three years
of this school. |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| I wish there were other things we could've done. It felt like we were working on one big project
where we did the same thing over and over again. |
| Triangles! |
| The practicality of this exercise was not what I expected for a third year studio. It is justifiable on the
basis that this was just our 4th design studio and that the principles of the project will add to our
design skills and process. However, I expected a more comprehensive and complex project. One
that dove into the introduction of structure, material, enclosure systems, and so on. On the other
hand it's nice to have stayed away from the more boring aspect of architecture LOL. Stick to the
more amusing side that is designing. |
| I found the program of this project to be the least valuable. As it was un-
original. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He sits down and talks about what the student is thinking of in their project and suggests what the student can do improve or implement the idea. |
| He takes the time to talk to you one on one and help you in a constructive and positive way. |
| He helped each person individually with our project and gave specific ideas for improvement of our projects. |
| That he was avaliable outside of class hours to help us |
| always around on campus. Always has good comments and suggestions on the direction of the project |
| He is always here and willing to help, even during non class hours. Goves
good suggestions and ideas. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He strongly knows what he wants and sometimes the student feels like they need to do what he
wants and are unable to explore more than that. |
| Nothing |
| Somewhat too conceptual. |
| N/A |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| Maybe tell the student ahead of time of ideas they can use rather than a few days before the project needs to be turned in so the student becomes stress during the last minute rush. |
| I enjoyed the desk critiques but more group critiques are good too. Students should be able to
critique other students' school work. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| This was very intensive and really challenges our design process and thoughts. I enjoyed doing the projects though at first I thought it was tedious but soon I found it to be very useful. |
| B |
| This course was my favorite studio by far. The material was not overwhelming, so I felt like I could do a really good job on the projects and look at a lot of details that I otherwise would not be able to. The material that we covered was beneficial to my learning and I feel like I've grown in this studio more than any other. It helped that the projects we did were supposed to contribute to our portfolio. |
| I would've never predicted the direction of the course at the beginning of the semester. I felt that in
where we went, we took our projects to a very complex and comprehensive level. And I enjoyed that.
Refining something to a point of such definition. I'd much rather take a project a specific direction
and have a complex and comprehensive outcome than having a large project that is not complex or
comprehensive in any direction. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| All of it, Palagi showed us a great many new programs, new ways for approaching design, new ways of thinking. As always he is unconventional and very effective. |
| Learning all the different programs available to architecture majors or anyone. I wish these
programs had been taught before. |
| Gaining the knowledge of photoshop, rhino, and unity was very valuable. All
are great tools for presentation, selling ideas, and getting people to
visually understand, feel, and experience your projects. |
| I found that the application of alternative methods of presentation were very strong in this course.
The skills learned in this class help to build a base understanding in programs that architects
generally outsource. Knowledge of this material helps to make us more desirable in the job market |
| Learning to use photoshop to effectively communicate designs. Experimentation with rhino
commands and paneling tools to help broaden design skills. |
| The most valuable aspects of this course is learning how to use new programs to help develop ideas faster. |
| skills learned from variety of programs and their application to presenting |
| Great way to learn about new ways to use technology! Learned how to really develop my skills using computer-based graphics and mediums. |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| hmmmm.....not sure, all of it was pretty freakin relevant. |
| Certain projects didn't have enough time or certain aspects were difficult to understand in class. |
| I think most of the information was valuable, i cant really remember what i
found to be useless. |
| Playing with rhino. I felt that more projects could have been utilized in Photoshop and 3ds max. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He has a deep and abiding will to learn more and expand what he knows about what he's already good at. Seems intensely curious in anything that might further our abilities to express ourselves, because HE'S deeply interested in that himself. |
| Good knowledge of all the different programs |
| His passion for architecture and the presentation of architecture is very
strong. With that, it gets you pumped to learn the things he is pumped about
and makes it easy to come to class. He knows how to diverge from the herd and
stand out weather it be scholastically, professionally, or architecturally. |
| He has a character that is very easy to approach, understanding, and willing to help. |
| He teaches you design tools to enhance your end product |
| Kristopher Palagi was always available to answer questions. He also demonstrated that he was able to show the class different ways to do the same thing. |
| Palagi introduced programs that we did not know of that greatly enhanced our
ideas of presenting a subject as well as showing us stimulating material to
get our creative process going. |
| He is a great professor who is personable, knowledgeable, and excellent at helping us reach further in our potential to design and use the different programs available to us. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| nothing was least helpful. Every class really let us go over something and practice. He even loosened up the expected stuff a bit when our projects in studio were coming due. |
| A little quick when teaching certain programs |
| Everything is pretty good. |
| He does seem a little erratic in organization, but nothing that can't be managed or tolerated |
| Hes knowledgeable with the programs he teaches |
| n/a |
| There was nothing that did not have some value at least. |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| BUY UNITY PRO FOR THE ARCH STUDENTS
That's it. |
| Take a little more time and maybe have exercises in class available to do. |
| Perhaps having more lessons about unity and rhino would be good, i think in
the future we might need a revit lesson or something. Being that its
supposedly the future of architecture. |
| I believe that the photoshop and alternative programs are more important than the series of rhino
work we did. I would have liked more focus on those projects, as those are programs we little
knowledge in. |
| More rhino projects |
| n/a |
| The fact that the structure to the course was pretty lax actually ended up making the learning atmosphere much more valuable. We all were able to share our creations and knowledge in a beneficial format that was easy to relate to one another and gain a better understanding on the capabilities we each had within the different programs. Overall, I think the course was a great way to approach exploring computer medium. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| Amazing, really furthered my computer design skills and idea's regarding expression of intent. |
| Great class for computers, but stay on your toes with the speed. |
| The course was a great addition to my presentation knowledge. Great course
for architecture for sure. |

| i recommend it |
| This course is awesome. Everyone who needs help learning design should have take this course. |
| really helpful, will improve your design skills and design thinking in
relation to presenting. recommend this class for student who believe they are
already strong "designers" to see how you can push/improve yourself. |
| Great! I really feel it helped me to further develop my computer graphics skills and provided valuable knowledge for compiling graphic presentations of my design work. The course also helped to get me to explore new ways of designing. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| I got nothing for this. |
| Have exercises that can be done in class |
| The course itself was great, i think if we spent more time in unity and more
time in rhino it would have been a little better. The photoshop lessons were
great. Maybe in the future add some revit and we are good. |
| - More focus in projects in alternative programs
- Organized layout of projects and material |
| Teaching of rendering program twinmotion and more in depth use of 3ds max. Material mapping in
3ds max |
| n/a |
| this course could be very effective as a summer class. |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Learning how to problem solve, time management, and prioritizing. |
| The most valuable aspects of this course was learning how to design effectively. Learning how to do a composition of a 3 dimensional or 2 dimensional model. |
| Learning the many subtitles of what makes something pleasing to someone. It challenged my time
management skills and also forced me to improve my craftsmanship. |
| the biggest outcome of the course was to earn how to be patient and manage time. |
| I believe crafting, and technique and a deeper understanding of this major was made clear durnig this course. |
| I believe this class gives you some insight on what its like to be an architect. |
| -learning what was intended
-learning from others
-time management |
| I really think challenging ourselves to push the boundaries of what was asked of us for different projects. |
| Everything. |
| Learning composition and the placement of objects in a model to make them more interesting. |
| I thought that starting the course with the clone project helped set the tone
for the class from the start and showed everyone what this class would be
like for the rest of the semester. Being able to work on your projects at
anytime of the day way convenient and having TA's and a professor to give
multiple perspectives on your project while you work was very helpful. |
| The goals of this course were presented in an unexpected and effective way that made me think
critically and uniquely about the things I perceive and the way I takle a project. |
| I think that the most valuable aspects of the course we're the amount of self interpretation we had
to use in ever project and the concept we applied to each project. |
| The projects were interesting and unique compared to other freshman studio courses. Every project from the beginning to the end related to each other. |
| I liked getting suggestions and help from the TAs.
I found the rotation of 2D to 3D very helpful because it would make me think about my projects in a
different perspective each time. |
| The projects were challenging and each one developed new forms of thinking and adressed
different concepts. |
| Any project we did Palagi directly tied to a practice done in the field, which I apreciated. |
| Learning about cross sections and the concept of designs. |
| The principles of design and the process of design; being able to look at ones project with a ability
to revise every decision and knowing why you made such a decision, never settling with what you
have in front of you till the very end. |
| I thought the general broadness of the projects themselves were effective in demonstrating the basic skills needed in design. |
| He always encouraged us to think outside the box. He wanted us to really go
beyond what you ever think you could do. It was very exciting. I was amazed
at the projects I created. |
| Knowing that I had the potential to do work I never thought of doing before. Being able to understand how to really think about projects and planning them out repeatedly to get it to only near almost satisfied |
| I think the first project is the most valuable because we got lots of things out of that project. We
learn to compose the size and where exactly it suppose to go. If I can do it again, I am sure i can
make it better and bring it to perfection. |
| The process of learning and refinement. I've never been put into that sort of mental rigorousness
before to understand and create something. Gaining that mentality to go through it will
undoubtedly make us students successful in architecture as well as other aspects of our lives. |
| I feel that the idea of defining a space and making a space interesting really helped me to gain understanding of the difference between architecture and drafting. At first, I thought architecture was solely about floor plans, but after taking this course I was able to broaden my understanding of it much more. I also feel that although assigning the clone at the beginning of the school year was stressful on us, it was extremely appropriate as a first project and taught me how to time manage. |
| Building the second topo was the project where I learned the most. |
| Palagi was very knowledgeable and he gave great input. |
| learning and finding a unique composition |
| The projects. They were character-building! |
| It's great that we are able to work through the whole class period. Palagi and the T.A.'s stay in
throughout the whole class period to offer help, answer questions, and clarify things. I feel Mike and
Liz were awesome T.A.'s. |
| Design concepts
Beginner's Craftsmanship
Basic Drawing Skills |
| Learning how to use time management |
| I believe the projects he assigned to us were obviously the most valuable
aspects of this course. It has taught us in many ways which improved our
knowledge, as well as our personal characteristics (time management, etc.) |
| I decided that this is not the major for me and am switching majors. |
| The short, simple introduction to each project.
Going over finished projects that had 'successful' elements.
Abstract projects that provide the foundation of architecture design and techniques rather than just pure model-making.
The helpfulness and availability of the professor and TAs. |
| Unfamiliar and time consuming projects that forced students to grasp new
concepts and learn time management
24/7 access to studio
Varying TA input giving students multiple views on projects that may or may
not contradict the professor's view
Projects stemming from one to the other, showing progress and how everything
relates to something else |
| Learning what i like and why i like things in a composition. |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| n/a |
| The least valuable aspects of this course would not be knowing what materials would be needed. Also there was a 2D project that I found to be unbeneficial to our class. |
| I feel like every project helped me see one way or another to make my designs better and the variety
of approaches to the many different types of projects was helpful. (so nothing) |
| n/a |
| Our instructor is inconsiderate, plays favoritism and is generally quite obnoxious. |
| none |
| None, everything in this class is very useful for us future architects to have. |
| None. |
| i don't really think i learned much from the project were we took our silhouettes from the clone and added a background and line. it was more of just a crafty project. |
| Jumping right into making such a large model in the very beginning of the course. |
| I didn't find anything that would make you not want to take this class. |
| I would say that all aspects of the course were valuable and helped me gain a better understanding
of the course and the concepts of architecture. |
| Sometimes it feels there are not enough time to fully comprehend the material. |
| I found everything in the course to be a valuable lesson. |
| I was able to grasp overall concepts fairly quickly, so we could have fit in more projects if he shortened some of the existing ones. |
| Having mid-point due dates of projects. |
| The mid point markers of each project weren't as important as Palagi made them seem, however
everything we did in Arch 101 were valuable, including finishing 1 composition by Thursday when 3
were due a week later for example. |
| The two-dimensional parti seemed slightly disconnected and random in comparison with the other projects. |
| The parti project maybe could have been explained a little better. |
| Knowing which days were work days because all days should be work days |
| All of the things we did are very valuable, every project has its own goal where we have to meet and
exceed. Palagi always told us to make things more dynamic which helped us and guide us
throughout the design process. |
| none. |
| The only project I feel was kind of confusing and out of place was the 2D composition project we did after the clones. |
| All aspects of this course were well planned out, there was no part that wasn't valuable to me |
| The way that the course is graded is a little too harsh, but I guess its understandable. |
| .. |
| Nothing. |
| N/A |
| I think presentations in front of the class was the least valuable to me
because it was really difficult to suggest how to improve when you are having
a hard time already. Also, people don't want to say anything, fearing their
own suggestion might lower the classmate's grade. |
| Cutting cardboard. |
| While the handouts did little to explain the project, it forced the student to pay careful attention to instructions and tips given at the beginning of class. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He was very helpful when I was stuck or confused about what I had to do or how to do something.
He didn't "fix" the problem for me, but he did explain different ways to experiment on how to fix the
problem. |
| I think that his creativity as a architect is very high. I liked learning about composition of the piece and how it can change if done slightly different. |
| He was very helpful when it came to how to generally improve all projects and how to improve your
specific project. He was easy to approach and very direct with his instruction while leaving us space
to interpret his advice in our own way. |
| he is very inspiring and give very good critics for the projects |
| Hes knowlegeable, and clear, and wierd. I like it because hes usually straight up about things unless hes being vauge. |
| He is very intelligent and will take time out of his schedule to come down and offer advice. |
| Offers good ideas. Constantly walks around class to check on progress. often chooses projects and explains what is working and what isn't. |
| He was willing to help us, and criticize our projects so we can see it from another perspective. |
| His way of teaching. |
| hes always willing to offer help or advice to better your project |
| I think it's helpful that since he seems to live nearby he sometimes comes in on his off days and come around and give advice like he would during a class. |
| I found that his critiques were helpful because he would show you how your
project could be improved and explain why that would make your project more
dynamic. |
| He challenges the class to look beyond their initial preconceptions to push themselves refine their
work. I found my end result to be greater than what I imagined and it is because of Palagi's teaching
and guidance. |
| I think his understanding of the subject (architecture) was obvious from the start of the course. His
organization of the class and course material was straight forward and clear. Over all I had a great
experience in the class, it challenged me intellectually and helped me gain experience in
architecture. |
| He's always there to give suggestions and will tell you when you're doing something wrong or right,
especially when it comes to technique. |
| Kristopher Palagi has immense knowledge of the materiel and gives substantial insight into every
project.
He is extremely capable of giving advice to individuals that enables them to create better
projects through their own ability. |
| his ability to notice your strengths and weakness' and what to say, and demonstrate, in order to enhance those. |
| I thought he was helpful in a way where he clearly improved my understanding design. |
| His level of experience and knowledge as a teacher and as a knowledge architect was very
valuable. He has an amazing grasp of design as well as being a great communicator when discussing
concepts and ideas as a class. |
| He obviously is passionate about the course material, which is beneficial in an instructor. Some of his criticism was constructive and inventive, and I valued some of his input. |
| He is very passionate about architecture and that rubs off on everyone else
in the class. He is very good at explaining projects that are due by giving
various examples both verbally and physically. |
| He knows what he is talking about so his advice is very useful in explaining what he expects of us in our projects |
| Palagi helped us in ways of saying things that will lead you to do things in a unexpected way. He
uses "what if you put it here, then all of a sudden...things changes in multiple ways" which led me
beyond my thinking and it often gave me inspirations when I am stuck on something. |
| That he pushes us to go beyond what is asked for and also that he encourages us to bring out our
own individuality in each project. |
| Whenever I needed help with something, he would answer my questions without giving me a direct answer on how to fix it. He would give me suggestions on how I could start something, and that would trigger me to think of something. I feel that this helped to change the way I think. |
| He explains all the projects in a vague, open ended way. It results in more
creative solutions |
| He knew what he was talking about and was very helpful and very knowledgeable. |
| He sometimes comes around and gives tips |
| He is very knowledgable in the subject, so his opinions were valued by everyone in the class. His ideas always work! |
| His vocabulary. |
| With every project, he always has something to say in regards of improving the project. |
| Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful, but very challenging. He possesses a very new school approach. |
| He is very enthused about all of the projects and lets people know if he likes their project or not |
| His architectural views were pretty amazing. Sometimes, he would go up to us
and ask what would happen if the project was changed this way or another.
This made us have different views on our project and had to critically think
again. This is probably the most effective way of experiencing architecture
to a satisfying extent. |
| Showing us examples. |
| Begins to challenge us to think in ways we never would have on our own.
Pushes us to refine our projects continuously so that it more accurately reflects our abilities.
Provides individual attention to most students based on their skills and work.
Sets recommended goals/timelines before a deadline to ensure that we're on track. |
| gives only enough information to explain what is being asked of in a project,
leaving students confused at first, forcing them to experiment and develop
their individual styles
Strict grading system, allowing students to realize that achieving simply
what was asked makes for only an average project |
| Mr.Palagi is very knowledgeable |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| n/a |
| I think the availability of the teacher is a big issue. But his TA's were helpful because they had a lot of time to help us. |
| The air of superiority that he projects making it seem that he is better than everyone at everything |
| I like how childish he is sometimes but i noticed that he does it usually when hes bored, looking at your project, and wants to say something but doesnt say it. Thats the only bad part. Just say it.
I also didnt very much want to talk to him, because he makes me nervous, but sometimes I would like his input. I just was too bugged by how eccentic he is to ask. I think his oddness is funny though. |
| He can easily make a student feel very inferior. |
| none |
| Sometimes his information is somewhat vague? but for the most part its not too bad. |
| None. |
| Sometimes instructions were just a little unclear. |
| I found that he played favorites a lot and that he wold always pick work that
would match his own style as work that he felt stood out and what the other
students should aim for when working on their own projects. |
| Kristopher Palagi is a god. When he gives me advice, angels sing. It drowns out his words
sometimes. |
| Some of advice between and TA's and Palagi were contradicting and hard to interpret. |
| . |
| Kristopher Palagi is all around an irreplaceable projessor.
The belt buckle was pretty intense though... |
| He does a really good job at zeroing in on specific design ideas that work, then explaining why. |
| I thought he was least helpful when he would just walk pass as I did my project without asking about
my project. |
| He wasn't always there to work with individuals one on one during class sessions enough. |
| I thought he was really vague in almost all grading criteria. He would tell us there are minimal rules and to let our minds run free with ideas, but then criticize our work or mark them down when we didn't present a project that was exactly what he wanted to see or conducive to his own personal style. I understand this courses purpose is to instill fundamentals of design; however, I felt like the ultimate result was almost creating identical, cookie-cutter architecture students, with very little wiggle room for innovation. |
| A lot of times he would not go up to someone unless they initiated they need
help. I think every class he should interact with everyone at least once to
ensure they are on the right track for the project due. |
| That he leaves us hanging on what materials we should be using to create a good project. Though, thats what makes us think more. Which makes us more curious. Which makes us more indecisive |
| Overall Paiagi is a cool guy and he is willing to help you when you need help. He is a very helpful
person! |
| nothing |
| The only thing that I find least helpful about Palagi is that it was kind of hard to approach him if he wasn't walking around. Other than that, I feel he was helpful. |
| I wish I could have gotten more help from him, but he only seems to help the
kids with the good looking projects. The students that need more help have to
get it from the TA's. |
| It was very difficult to impress him with your work and it was rare for him to come and give me his
input. I feel like he could have balanced his time in class to visit every student, or almost every
student, to help them. I felt like he always gave input to a certain few students. |
| He has a lot of favortism in which he only helps the same students. |
| Sometimes he could seem unapproachable, or I was afraid to ask for help because I felt so architectually inferior to him. His knowledge is intimidating. |
| N/A |
| He can be very blunt and it is sometimes very hard to guess how he will react to something |
| I do appreciate Palagi coming to the studio on his own time, but I don't like
how he brings his dogs with him. It kinda creates a sense that he is having
fun, while we are sitting here working hard. |
| He mainly focused only on the students that did great work. Did not talk a lot about projects or go
into deep detail. Unsure what he was looking for. |
| Projects a personality that intimidates many students (initially) from approaching him with questions. "I wanna ask him, but I'm scared to..."
Lessens after a few weeks/months into the semester. |
| a bit intimidating at times |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| I can't think of anything. Sometimes he makes us do random things/projects that might frustrate us
and make us think "what does this have to do with arch?", and then he connects what we learned
from those projects to architecture. Very good teaching style. |
| I think to improve this course, project dates need to be more clear. |
| Make the grading system a tiny bit more lenient |
| n/a |
| Be more understanding of students and they're personal issues
Less aggressive and snarky
less vague |
| none |
| Assignment sheets could get to us the first day the we do a project, and not towards the end. |
| Come in out of class a little more often or try to let students know a little ahead of time if you plan to come in so more people are aware. |
| I think that he should be clearer when giving the guidelines of an assignment
and to grade on a more understandable scale rather than asking students to
create amazing work because amazing could be interpreted differently by
others. |
| I don't have suggestions, I enjoy the way the course is currently run. |
| I personally don't like how he doesn't tell us all parts of the project in the beginning, but I can
understand why he tells us bits and pieces then near the end tells us the entire project
requirements. |
| I am thrilled with Kristopher Palagi's teaching style and methods. I recommend that he continue
business as usual. |
| Bring us food to eat! |
| I suggest more one on one help. |
| Palagi could improve on working with individuals one on one. He does such a great job
communicating to the class as a whole, but it would be very helpful to have continuous input from
his throughout projects he assigns.
Also he hasn't clearly defined this grading criteria. |
| Perhaps be more open-minded with students' designs; or, contrarily, present more specific grading goals and instructions so we aren't blindsided by the grade he gives us on an assignment that he said "had no rules." There was also one instance in particular that I found the instructor to be especially unprofessional - when construction workers were dismantling the APEC wood presentation boards in the courtyard, Palagi essentially trash talked the workers for being imprudent with their placement of nails. While I appreciate his concern for the safety of the students, I felt him stressing that "architects never ever talk to the workers, and those guys out there are idiots" was an inflated, egotistical comment in regards to architects in general, and was especially harsh and improper to tell to a group of impressionable first year students. |
| The parti project is the only project I would want him to change. Maybe he
could assign a more interesting project demonstrating parti lines. |
| Continue to remind us ways to improve and what we can do to fix yourselves |
| Even though the projects are insanely hard and we only have a short period of time to finish it, if i
were to choose again, I will still take his class and spend more time on my projects. The only thing
that I think need improvement is to show us more example of different projects because I am visual
person and by looking at examples, I can use it as a reference. |
| none |
| One thing I would suggest is to make sure all of the T.A's know exactly what the project is. I was confused once, and I asked two different T.A's to explain what the project was. I got two different answers and didn't know who to listen to. |
| I wish he would use a more visual style of teaching. He only teaches us just
by describing with his words. I wish there were pictures to go with what he
was saying. |
| He can improve his course more if he balanced his time in class by giving his input to every student. |
| Help students who seem to be struggling not only those who are succeeding. Just because they are doing poorly does not mean they are not trying.
Make instructions clearer. Print out a rubric and stick with it. We as students are always unsure of sticking to the rubric or not. |
| My suggestion would be to offer help to students who seem to be struggling, since sometimes we're just too scared to ask for help. |
| N/A |
| Although the classmates constantly complain about how our due date is so
"short," I do believe it is quite beneficial since it improves our time
management skills. As an architect, the project due dates are strictly
followed, and a single mistake could end your career. However, I think
Palagi should do something with his "breaking" habits. Seeing our own
projects break before eyes is too painful (in my opinion). |
| I don't know. |
| Very strongly opinionated with what he likes and dislikes, which at times MAY clash with what a student would naturally design vs. what they would do to get an "A." Nevertheless, he still remains open to ideas and lets the student experiment with different methods/styles. |
| go over more projects and show what not to do, and why we should not do it. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| This course was very frustrating and time consuming. I was sleep deprived and grouchy, and I'd
have to consciously remember to do work for other classes because this class took up most of my
brain space. It's a hate/love thing though, because I learned a lot of great things through this class
that can be used for the rest of my time in college and life (problem solving, time management,
prioritizing, thinking out of the box, open to peer evaluations and constructive criticism, standing
up for what you believe in despite the rules as long as you can justify your reasons, letting yourself
be creative). I realized that I could create/do a lot more then I knew I was capable of. I think that
my work was better because the teacher was hard on us but was still there to help out. Good course
(but not recommended to those who don't LOVE to create things). |
| The projects were educational and helped get the overall learning goals across, but often times, the instructor's grading principles were unclear or misleading. |
| Even though I spent a copious amount of time in the studio and was hard pressed to get all of the
projects done on time I learned more in this class about design and architecture than I ever ever
expected to. |
| this class was very challenging and fun in many ways at the same time. the ta s could be a liitle bit
more inspiring . |
| Good course. Worth it. |
| It is generally good, the TAs are nice. |
| Very intense course. Time consuming, costly. Learned interesting concepts. |
| It is very time consuming, but I enjoyed every minute of rattling my brains. |
| Great. Learned A LOT in regards to the course, and Architecture Major in
general. |
| i really enjoyed it. it was fun to be creative and making things |
| This course was a little rough in the beginning but it leveled off nicely as the semester went on so it wasn't too unbearable. |
| I thought that this course was very good because of the variety of projects
that we worked on throughout the semester. The projects that were assigned
were challenging yet fun to work on & helped us understand the principles of
design and composition. |
| It is very helpful in the understanding of composition and underlying themes of design. |
| It was a wonderful experience, challenging and fun. |
| This class was challenging, but stimulating. The pressure throughout the course was no joke. Overall, I enjoyed this class and I learned a lot. |
| B+ |
| It is EXCELLENT. |
| An A |
| My overall evaluation of the course is that it was really helpful and a great start up for the
architecture program. |
| One of hardest yet thought provoking and rewarding classes. I highly recommend that Arch 101 is
continued and Palagi is teaching Arch 101. Although it was extremely challenging, it was easily my
favorite class this semester. |
| Most of the projects themselves were effective teaching tools. However, I would've liked an overall calendar displaying assignment due dates, etc., to better plan my semester (with the exams and projects from other courses). My neutrality - or even slight dissatisfaction - was the only issue I had with the course. I think not just saying we have open-ended projects, but actually enforcing the freedom of design, would be beneficial in promoting design innovation and imagination, while still promoting the basic principles intended by this course. |
| I feel Palagi is a great instructor because he knows the subject material and
gives great tips for us to use when we enter our profession. He really wants
everyone to succeed as long as they put forth the effort to learn the
concepts taught and apply them to the projects. |
| Time consuming, brain chalenging, yet Very beneficial |
| So far this class is the class that I did the most projects in! And I loved it! I rather spend my time
doing projects rather than doing homework because projects are more fun to do! Even though the
projects are complicated, but as long as I learn something for it then I think its worth it. |
| IF I were to rate this course from 1-10, I would give it an 9 because as a first year architecture student, I felt that this course really prepared me for years to come. However, there were some improvements that could be made. |
| This course was the most challenging thing I have ever done. |
| The course was a great foundational/introductory course. |
| Palagi was always enthusiastic when presenting a new project. But would always change the rubric throughout class until the project was due. He is also unclear as to what he would want. He praises those who have done not followed the rubric. This makes it confusing and very hard to understand what he wants to see and how he is grading. But I enjoy working on most of the projects and i understand the underlying message of how it relates to Architecture. |
| I think this was an excellent class to start off my schooling in Architecture. I gained so much knowledge from the assignments, and even though they were the most challenging assignments I've ever encountered, they taught me how to manage my time and be a self-directed learner. I almost dropped the class because the first project was such a challenge, but I stuck it through and I am glad I did. I truly feel that I am a better person because I pushed myself way out of what I am familiar and comfortable with. I've gained so much confidence in myself having found this ability to actually complete these projects. I feel well prepared for the next level, and this class has changed my attitude towards seemingly impossible things. I'm ready to try anything Architecture throws at me! |
| it's an important part of the school's Architecture program. Although I am still a freshmen, I strongly
feel that this class is an important foundation to the rest our career. The difficulty of this class will
build students to be stronger to-be Architects. |
| While the class is very stimulating, and students are enthusiastic about the course, it seems to move very fast. This does not allowing students to fully grasp the design aspect, and rely on the instructor and the TA's for design guidance. However, this may be a positive since there may not be enough time in a semester to fully understand basic design concepts. |
| I enjoy the class and love working on the projects, but the amount of work expected can, at times be
a little overwhelming. Palagi also expects a lot out of projects and the grades he gives out show it. It
is a very hard class to get an A in but if you manage to get that A you know you truly deserve it. |
| My overall evaluation is that Palagi should teach again in the future. |
| Not for me. |
| A perfect professor for first year studio...uses unorthodox teaching methods to lay down the foundation for what architects will need throughout the seven years in school (and even in our future career).
Challenges all students to seriously think about their reasons for entering architecture and whether it is right for them. |
| The course is extremely difficult, due to the immediate assignment of
projects. Projects quickly cause students to realize how demanding the course
is, resulting in some withdrawals. Those that stay are greeted with more and
more projects that each relate to the one before it. I found this class to be
a good experience. It forced me to see things in ways that I never did before
and allowed me to learn about the design process. This course is probably not
for students that like to enjoy a lot of free time. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| There could be more direction from the professor. (Although I think that we learned more because
he let us figure things out for ourselves)
There should be a couch in the studio! |
| I think more two-dimensional drawing projects would have been beneficial for a well rounded course. I think clearer grading guidelines and instructions are needed. I think more positive criticism is necessary to improve morale. |
| The fact that the projects stacked upon each other meant that if you did one project poorly you
would be hard pressed to make the next one up to standard. And in some people's case, if you
failed to do one project it made it impossible to the do the next one. So, I did like the way that they
stacked upon each other but maybe make it so that one project didn't require the previous project to
complete. |
| the biggest thing i will suggest is the way the projects were announced as far as the requirement
should be little mor clear for the first studio. i understand that the school is trying to find out the
real dedicated students, BUT by doing that a lot of good students with pasion for architecture
would just give up cause they would fail to find their strongest side of their working skill. school
should inspire students right? |
| n/a |
| I wish that Mr.Palagi would stop acting so high and mighty, he's not the head of the department. If he can fix that attitude then it would become a great class. |
| n/a |
| I think we should have newer desks, and again have our assignment sheets ready on the first day of our projects. |
| Have better Teacher Assistants. |
| Start with a project that isn't as crazy. A couple more pointers in the beginning couldn't hurt either. |
| This course could be improved by giving students more warning of how much
money we would have to spend on this course. |
| I'm not sure how the course could be improved. I enjoy the way this course is currently run. |
| The materials/assignments could be explained in a clearer manner. Sometimes it feels like we are just thrown under the bus. |
| More teacher assistants. |
| This course can be improved if the students had more working space. Also, if the teacher assistants
had more one on one help with the students. |
| Maybe making more projects equal weight rather than two that are very important. |
| Overall calendar for assignments. Increased acceptance for alternative design styles by the instructor. |
| Discussing more clearly on what he wants to see so the students dont misinterpret what should be done |
| Show more examples in some of the complex projects. |
| - Make it mandatory for people to clean their desks. |
| More work space. |
| I think a list of ALL of the materials that would be needed in the class should be listed, so that
students don't have to constantly go to a store for more material. |
| Clarify if we have to follow the rubric or NOT. Give us the all the instructions of the project at one time. It gets confusing when the rubric is constantly changing. |
| Again, if Palagi was a little more approachable I feel I could've got so much more out of this course. He was very helpful when I asked for help, I just didn't want to most of the time because I didn't really know what I was doing. I didn't even know what question to ask. Also, if he handed out rubrics for each project, I think the class as a whole could've benefitted from it. |
| N/A |
| Make design concepts more clear and straight forward. |
| The projects can be improved by relating them to more of an actual building
design process. The projects he assigned to us were sort of irrelevant, but
it shows HOW we tackle on the problems. |
| I think that projects could be described and explained more thoroughly. Actually tell the students
what he is looking for. Give every student suggestions instead of only the same few. |
| Devote more time to explaining different architecture tools and how to use them (properly).
More group discussions that help a student 'consciously' explain WHY they made their design decisions and what is successful in their own project. |
|

36. Other comments:

| Palagi has a great sense of humor which lightened up the studio when we were going NUTS! Coffee
should be on the list of required things for the class. |

| Hi Palagi, Mike was a big help when it came to giving good advice and pushing me to do better.
Ohh, and sorry for blasting country music I know it's not your favorite. |
| pout of all the Ta i found mike was the only one really inspired. not claiming other ta a were bad ,
but mike really can give students better suggestion other than pointing out problems. other Ta s
are very helpful too. but Palagi is on of the best when it comes to helping students and mike was
awesome as a Ta. |
| Regarding the TAs...
Liz I found most helpful.
Mike was insightful, but odd. Keep him.
Graham was a flirt.
Dee was just... annoying sometimes. But shes just doing what shes suppose to.
Personally I dont like TAs around me putting in their two cents if I didnt ask for them. But I guess thats just their job. |
| Liz was an extremely helpful TA. She helped me the most throughout the course. Offered her own ideas and always would talk to every single person about their project. |
| Very good class |
| D was not a very good TA. every time that i asked her questions about something she gave me bad advice. specifically when i asked if we could do something in a project and she said yes when actually we weren't supposed to be doing it at all |
| <3 |
| I liked this class, and I appreciate the fact that we are given creative liberty with each assignment. |
| "Dynamic!" And more desk space. |
| Graham Hart was an excellent T.A. He gave the most logical and applicable advice. His advice
was also very constructive and direct; however, he managed to ensure that he wasn't telling a
student "what to do" or "how to do it". Furthermore, Graham was present in the studio outside of
class time on countless occasions. |
| Keep Palagi. All the TA's were extremely valuable except for Dee. She was very quiet and didn't make
a huge effort to communicate to students. |
| The TAs were this course were generally extremely helpful. Liz, especially, gave the most constructive criticism and helped inspire creative design ideas. Michael, too, gave interesting alternative perspectives on the projects at hand, and gave helpful critiques of our work. I didn't have many - or any - conversations with the other two TAs, so perhaps more interaction among the different sides of the room would've been beneficial. |
| Thank you Palagi for an amazing semester! |
| Cant wait for the next studio... |
| Thank You! |
| The TAs were helpful:
Graham: I think Graham was the most knowledgeable TA out of the four, he was very helpful.
Definitely hire him again.
Dee: I think Dee tried her best to help the students, which she did give helpful suggestions, but I
feel like she was a little unsure at times.
Michael: He gave great advice when he would talk to me.
Liz: Liz gives great suggestions and is really helpful and knows what she's doing. |
| .. |
| Sadly, Liz is graduating this semester. If she wasn't, she should be hired again! Mike should
definitely be hired. With his crazy perspective on things, he has helped me to view my projects from
different views. |
| Out of the four TA's, Liz and Michael, were very beneficial to the class. Both challenged us and knew what the instructor was looking for. They were very friendly, helpful, and were very knowledgeable. By mid-semester the entire class knew that these were the two people to ask advice. Not only were they serious with their jobs, they also made the students comfortable. I would view them more as mentors, helping the students with class projects and university problems. |
| I like to guess what kind of color your Converse shoes is going be the
following day. Anyways, because I have a job, it has taught me how to manage
time wisely which will help me prepare for the next 6-7 years of this
academy. |
| Having four TAs in addition to Palagi greatly helped...since all five of them had their own styles and opinions, a student could take their advice, pick out aspects that impressed/satisfied them, and incorporate it into their design decisions.
TA's really made the effort to get to know each student beyond simply a student-mentor relationship. This made it easier to approach them with questions about projects and architecture in general. |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Learning that process through development is very important |
| I found that the approach to the project was valuable because it taught me to analyze each part of the building function as separate entities. I found that to be a very good way to look at the design as a whole. |
| I like that we were given our first real opportunity to look at floor plans and how they interact level to level, I think that being able to look at section details was incredibly helpful in understanding building components. I wish that there was a lecture class which included a lab where we would be taught the formalities of drafting section cutting etc. When asked palagi was incredibly helpful, but I feel that it's such a vast amount of knowledge that we need to learn and learning it while trying to apply it created difficulties. I like that he stressed to us the value of our own devotion toward our learning by encouraging us to take the initiative and look at architecture in magazines and around the world. |
| The way we went from small vignettes, then broader ideas on the final
project, to more developed concepts, this method really helped develop our
sense of progress and how each stage should reflect a finished product. It
also illustrated to us that "finished product" can mean many things, but most
importantly it shows a sense of creativity and is successful at being stimulating both graphically and is informational to those who view the
projects. |
| Learning about proper presentation, cutting the fat off the design process, and getting a greater review of sections/plans and potential photoshop processes. As always our inherent ability to design improves, if only through sheer practice, but a fantastic class with pelagi always. |
| 1. How things were communicated in plan drawings.
2. The weekly "presentations". |
| the small project, its about trial and error but understanding |
| Utilizing more efficient methods to both develop and convey an
architectural concept.
Establishing a better personal understanding of hierarchy with regard to
different aspect of our projects.
ex. a focus on main architectural "moments" over the overall design
completion of lesser elements.
Gaining a broader understanding of the pros and cons of different presentation elements, and understanding that leaving out certain aspects
of the building can actually be more effective in a presentation.
ex. conceptual sketches & renders vs. plans and sections. Concepts depict
a concise design idea without the burden and distraction of adjacent
spaces, while plans give a more detailed understanding of how all the
spaces work together. |
| The attention to the different design vignettes throughout the semester and the random selection of resident artists helped to create inspired design rather than designing until there is inspiration. |
| Learning a lot about presentation
Focusing on spacial arrangements
and feeling of user |
| I liked the remofo because it was restricted to the programs we were given |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| developing through Rhino |
| The timing of the project deadlines in the beginning of the semester seemed a little slow. Then it really picked up towards the end. |
| I wish that this class was separated into two sections, maybe one day a week would be spent lecture format, where the formalities and technicalities of drafting would be shown. The other 2 class periods would then be spent applying what was learned in lecture to our projects. It is difficult processing what needs to be learned intermixed with the design aspects. I feel that often times because of this our quality of design didn't go as smoothly as it otherwise could have. |
| Maybe more hard deadlines set. |
| I felt that our initial month of project design led me through valuable steps in creating a presentation, but it was approached in such a way that my final product lacked the interest I usually desire in my work. I remade the entire thing into something more appropriate, but it took several days. Really that's not a "least valuable" at all, just a bit more encouragment to play with space would have helped. |
| None. |
| 3 hour long classes only for 4 credits |
| While the course demanded a lot of time, a lot of the requirements were
actually fairly versatile and open ended. Many of the assignments could have
benefited from more examples and effective studies to guide and set standards
. For example, the sunlight diagrams required students to completely figure
out everything for themselves and as a result, each student ended up with an
entirely different diagram. With examples or samples of different effective
approaches to sunlight diagrams, I believe students would have gained a
better understanding of how to approach. |
| The course is vital to our education as Architecture students and everything covered is important to our education. |
| I am dissapointed at how other arch classess require to build models taking
away PRECIOUS time from our studio time, where OUR design skill gets
developed. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He knows a lot about every detail, which helps when I need to about certain
aspects. Always available for one on one time |
| He gave exact ways that could help me make my design better. This promoted me to continue designing. Sometimes I got stuck and his direction helped a lot. He is also very approachable and his way of teaching is awesome. He's not boring. |
| I think that his passion for the students and the topic are directly translated into his everyday interactions. I appreciate the amount of time and energy that he puts into his teaching; it's nice working hard for a professor who as a result really cares and is willing to put in the same type of energy. His passion is shown through his devotion and willingness to answer a wide array of questions as well as go out of his schedule to meet with students. |
| Easy-going yet still driven at making students really learn new ways of
thinking. |
| Same as always, he really knows his stuff and is one of the only professors that seems genuinely relateable while talking about it. Too often you get the teacher that goes on about the grand theory behind everything, and leaves you sitting there thinking "what?". Pelagi actually can talk to you and further your stuff in means we understand, I'm sure we'll get to the fancy-speak later. |
| I found his suggestions and thoughtful insight on my different work to be the
most valuable. |
| thaqt he is so emotional and passionate about what he is telling you |
| Said instructor exists as a wealth of information in many realms relevant to
architecture including design, structure, and effective presenting, and life
lessons. |
| Kristopher Palagi has a wealth of knowledge that is able to not only teach us as students, but inspire us to persevere through our studies and design well. |
| His character is intriguing and blends well with his teaching style. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Sometimes unclear of designing proccess |
| I think that it would be nice to see a written outline of everything in advance. I also feel that in many ways the school didn't properly prepare us for all of the things that we were supposed to learn. Palagi did his best to fill in all of the gaps that were left in the curriculum, but I still feel that we could have gained more knowledge had we had better preparation for the information which was given. |
| More structure to each class period would help in really gaining as much
value as possible from the course. |
| Sometimes it seemed rather unclear as to what we needed to do to get a good grade, so we all just worked really hard at what we thought we needed to do. Got it right most of the time. |
| None. |
| sometimes his own design gets in the way of what you as a student thinks is a good design just
based on opinion |
| N/A |
| I think Kris has a tendency to spend more time on students that are great
with their work and less on students who really needs the help. |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| I think if I knew my standing grade throughout the course, that would help improve the course. |
| when showing lessons at a desk it would be nice if it was done on a board so that we would all be able to see it. |
| Keep on pushing students to explore new concepts and ways of showing their
work. Continue to emphasize the integration between drawn and computer
generated drawings. |
| He's all around easily one of the best teachers here, it'd be cool if he brought his dogs in every day to play with us but all in all there's not much he could do to make things more condusive to our education. |
| None. |
| While a huge part of architecture is being able to teach oneself, the ambiguity the specific requirements of each assignment can also lead to less
quality in the final product while forcing a student to teach and make
decisions for his/her self. I think that this can be helped with more
detailed studies into effective examples relating to the assignment at hand. |
| It is my belief that a more organized/consistent series of teaching the technology that we are asked to use in order to create our presentations would help further develop these skills as a class and inspire a more thoughtful process of design. This is specifically intended towards the use of rhino options beyond rendering and shortcuts (render options, rhino advanced options, exporting, etc.) and Photoshop options/processes. |
| I like Kris Palagi the way he is. Again his personality matches well with his
teaching style. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| Decent |
| I thought it was a great course. It was helpful to me and improved my education overall. Palagi did a great job. |
| I think that Palagi is an excelent teacher, who always tries to the best of his ability. |
| Great! I definitely got a professor that helped teach me new things about
architecture and design that broadened my knowledge. |
| Great, hire him for next semester and give him a 30% raise. |
| I found the course to be both difficult and enjoyable. I would recommend the
course to anyone who has an interest in architecture. |
| I would take this class again and learn just as much as I had previously.
This course was very beneficial to my education in architecture, although I
think that the class could have been structured slightly better. |
| Excellent course, however I feel that a few unfortunate circumstances kept the course from reaching 150% |
| on grade scale...i'd give it a B |
| Overall a decent course, it was challenging enough to have gotten 3-4
students dropping out of the course. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| I wish there could have been different projects involved instead of one large
project |
| I feel that this class could be improved if we had a little more technical information thrown in. I learned a lot about design, presentation and composition which is an extreme benefit. So the only advice I could give for improvement would be to include a little more technical information. |
| In our sequenced courses I feel that we need to be given a stronger foundation on which we would be better able to perform in studio. |
| More structure in class periods.
Maybe more emphasis on how to incorporate building structure in our designs. |
| We could have two desks and free printing privilages in the lab. a tutorial or two in rhino always helps but we're getting the hang of things. |
| The different sections could have interacted more by sharing their ideas and
thoughts. I would have wanted to hear the other instructor's critiques on my
process. |
| Better room selection (one with technical options), the separation of courses in Laulima, Better Collaboration between sections |
| more stimulating projects need to be introduced.
i believe the class focused on the urban theater a bit too much and nothing was really learned... |
|
|
36. Other comments:
|
| I found that the tumbler blog and the recording of the presentations were extremely helpful and were benefits to the course. Also the books he bought in for us to use were also good resources. |
| I wish that the school better understood what is best for the students and formulated their schedules (including that of classes) around that is best for the student instead of what is easiest and most convenient for the administration. EXAMPLE: I feel that it is NOT in the best interest of the student to have their portfolios due during the semester, before their finals and other classes are finished. I feel that is exemplary of their lack of understanding and care for the students. I understand that it is in a effort to allow the staff the time to look at them but it undeniably lowers the quality of 3 years of projects and things which the students have worked very hard on. It is both inconsiderate and an obvious indicator of the schools lack of empathy and understanding of the students who only want to produce the best possible product. In giving the students a minimum of 1 week after finals, it would allow them to process the works they have just completed in their last semester thus lettering them turn in a more complete project. These are students who spent nights and weekends working extreemly hard only to be treated in a completely unfit manner. |
| Keep on trucking. |
| Pirates and Ninja agree: cowboys suck |
| None. |
| Kristopher Palagi is by far one of the most talented, intriguing, and involved professors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He has a genuine intrigue in his students and there work, helping to expand and evolve their understanding of the material and the built environment. His interest in the use of digital media as a form of presentation has proved useful and prepares us for the evolution of architecture alongside traditional sketching/drawing. |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I value every aspects of this course because it had helped me in every possible way to better understand what architects are and the roles of being and architect. It inspires me to challenge and further my knowledge and studies in this specific field (Architecture). I love visualizing images and designs in my head so I am pretty sure this is the suitable field of study for me.
I also enjoyed the research and presentation in class. It allows me to present and convince the audience that what I am presenting is worth listening to and amazingly fabulous to get involve. It also allows me to get involve with people's thought just by presenting. I could tell who's bored and who's not which can help me better my presentation next time. As an architect, I believe that oral presentation plays a big part of their job. |
| learning the basic concepts of design. the class provided a good overview of design as it pertains to architecture. |
| Everything in this course was valuable. To me personally, learning about works of other architects were valuable. It helped me understand what kinds of architecture is out there, like what's already been done, and what could be done.
I also found that having speakers come to the class was extremely valuable, because we gotten to know architecture from their point of view. |
| the explanation of each project was beneficial for an arch major to understand how to look at things through a different perspective. |
| I liked having the guest speakers that had come in to speak to the students about architecture and what the field is like. It gives the students a better perspective into the work life of an architect. |
| All aspects of this course were valuable. I really enjoyed listening to the guest lecturers that came in every Thursday. I also liked when Palagi would take us around the campus talking about architecture and pointing out different things that I haven't thought of or noticed before. All of the projects were great. My favorite has been going out in nature and creating things. The movies he showed were very interesting and eye opening for me. I liked watching these movies because they exposed me to new things and the discussions afterward were always interesting and inspiring. It was also great to use Tumblr. It was cool to be able to see everyone's work. |
| Project |
| I absolutely loved how Kris brought in so many guest speakers to tell us about why they love architecture, what inspires them and what they do as an architect. This opened my eyes to the field of architecture. |
| i was able to learn different aspects of architecture that helps me to evaluate and look at everyday
things from an architectural standpoint. |
| Inspires
everyday I was able to remind myself to awake and be inspired! |
| the real life application.... like the guest speakers presentations. When they had visuals it was best understood. |
| I appreciated that he seemed to value Architecture but in the context of people. That it was really people who make and break and experience and need to communicate with each other and with/through the buildings. To me, that was interesting and important because buildings are essentially made by people, for people. And I had never thought very deeply about it before but seeing his love for the craft and various other peoples' as well, it's true that the aura of a space manipulates a person's experience of it. That communicating with the buildings in its evironment and with people within the building and the architect is beautiful because it meets us as a society where we're at. All we can do is merely enjoy the space and reflect and accept it as truth. He did this in a variety of ways like touring the campus and analyzing the buildings, lectures, videos/documentaries, projects, reading, creating, photographing, sketching, questioning, and so many other ways. |
| I enjoyed listening to the various guest speakers. |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| I have to admit the project that we were assigned to do in this course is pretty much challenging and allows us to think beyond. But if only we could do it in class so every student can look and evaluate other students work just like we did in Arch 101 then it will help other students to have a better understanding of their work and be able to distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of their own project. |
| having to attend when there is a big project due in the studio! honestly i really enjoyed the class. |
| There really was nothing that was least valuable that was taught in this class. |
| sometime the lectures were very broad and sometimes lead us to things unrelated to what we thought was architecture. |
| I do wish that we could spend more time developing and discussing the elements used to create interest in design, in which we could better apply it towards our projects in the class. |
| I didn't find anything about this course not valuable. |
| Nothing special |
| I cannot think of anything wrong about this course. |
| i didn't think anything throughout the semester was irrelevant |
| everything was pretty much valuable |
| gathering in group discussions. Some people are just so anti. maybe the time of morning or because they are non majors... but either way... waste of time. People reading off presentations was pretty weak as far as trying to retain their information. If we (students) could have all had copies as well of each presentation as they read would have been easier to appreciate the research |
| As much as I really liked this professor I sometimes felt like his passion for the craft and conviction for certain artists and working philosophies tended to show too strong in his lectures and I felt like I had to believe what he believed in order to be good at architecture or at least be a legitimate artist. But all in all, this was a minor "problem" and I felt like more people should have his level of conviction and believe in their opinion. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He knows how to explain well so students can understands his expectation of projects. |
| the man is passionate about teaching and design ( and he is very good at both). In fact his passion is contagious and really makes you want to learn. He makes it a point to attack the design learning process from many angles, understanding the what is good for the goose, may not be good for the gander. great teacher. |
| What I found most valuable and helpful about Palagi is that he always had his opinion on things. He always told us from the beginning to own our own opinions, to let others and ourselves know what we like or dislike about something. |
| his attitude is attitude towards the course is the strongest value he has. |
| His enthusiasm. He was inspiring to listen to and you could tell he really loves what he does which is admirable. |
| His passion of architecture |
| How friendly he is. Kris is not like most professors or other instructors. He is open for conversation, fun to be around, and in general he has the vibe of being a nice guy. His class was very laid back and I liked that. |
| he's a really cool guy who shows his passion for architecture in the way he teaches the class |
| All the info. that was given,
I was able to open my eyes to many different artists that I never knew |
| his enthusiasm... even in the morning. |
| I liked how he had his opinions and encouraged us to share ours and whenever we had projects, he would give individual critiques in front of the class. Ordinarily I would be really uncomfortable but he always had useful things to say and never intended to cut anyone down. It was always our work in the forefront and trying to improve it and nothing else. It actually helped me learn from my mistakes and actively try to embrace different ideas while still believing in my own. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| the use of time in class can sometimes be very ineffective |
| Hard to feel included sometimes because I wasn't in his studio class where it seems he gets a lot closer with his students. |
| Nothing special |
| Everything was fine. I have no complaints or criticism. |
| no comment |
| nothing much |
| When he would talk about what Used to be done. Doesn't help us now... and makes us wander in thought of why things are changed if not for the better. |
| He tends to be insensitive and kind of mocking. In that way he's a little unapproachable. But not being nurturing isn't necessarily a bad thing because it's really personality. |
| He made class interesting and interactive. |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| i felt the class was well DESIGNED, he has clearly thought about the best way to teach a group of people with varying interests and skill levels. |
| we should have gone over specific architects and buildings as a class. |
| He should keep doing what he's doing. He could also incorporate more pictures and movies. I was so much more interesting when I was given visuals to look at. It made me grasp what he was saying easier. A lot of people are visual learners and it is great to incorporate many visuals through out a course on design. |
| This class was awesome. Besides being a bit anxious with the few art projects (I am not an artist by any means) the course material was easy enough. But then again, this is a fine arts class so that is perfectly normal material. In short, I can't think of anyway to improve this class; it is fine. |
| maybe a little more projects |
| I like this class pretty much as it is
Its a good class for out side of major students to be able to get an grasp or what Architecture is as
well as what designing is. |
| I really can't think of anything.
I'm confident that Palagi is a really good architecture educator. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| Good |
| wish i needed to take it again. |
| This course is important to the field. Because it gave a better understanding of the field of architecture. |
| It is a great course to take whether you want to be an architect or you are just interested in architecture. I'm really glad I took this course. I was exposed to so many new and exciting things. My creativity was utilized and I enjoyed going to class. |
| Excellent |
| excellent... thats all that needs to be said. |
| great class that i recommend taking from palagi |
| Excellant |
| Good source of overall information for an introductory course |
| Excellent. This course exceeded all my expectations, perhaps because many other professors I've had are pretty boring and just read off the powerpoint. They never try to engage with the students nor seem interested in our work. Such was not Palagi. Words that come to mind are passionate and truth. Be passionate about something and find truth for yourself. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| i did like the fact that there were three main projects, but im thinking that there could have been one more. of course im only saying this now that im out of the class, but often it seemed the time allotted for projects was too long. |
| There could be a better use of time. Also the use of more visuals. I loved when we would look at pictures of architects work and watch movies relating to design. |
| I would like to know more modern architecture
And more various variousachitecture |
| assigning students more hands-on projects |
| nothing much |
| A better projection system would improve the flow of the presentations. |
|
|
36. Other comments:
|
| I enjoyed the interesting, motivating, and inspiring lectures about architecture and art. Additionally enjoyed looking at some of the buildings on campus to learn about and see examples of their architecture and designs. |
| Palagi is a great teacher. I would take this course again if I had to. It was inspiring. I love having teachers that are passionate about what they teach. This class was a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed it. |
| Thank you for teaching us!!! |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Pretty much everything. It allows us to visualized and test our craftsmanship. |
| Many hands on work. |
| Self evaluation and critiques from classmates. |
| Demonstrating our artisic and creative ability to refine our proejects. |
| learning how to see the world as an architect, the amount of time spent on each project made me sensitive to design details. this class really started me off on the right foot |
| interactions amungst the students as far as different methods used and pattern of work styles... good for self experimentation with habit and material use balanced against time. |
| personal planning and innovation through inspiration |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Not enough time to fully complete a project. |
| None, all projects that was given was very interesting and funny. |
| Explaining projects. I feel that projects weren't explained well enough in
the beginning to fully understand what's expected or done for the
assignments. |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He is familiar with almost everything about architect and he knows how to talk and motivate students in a right direction to have their projects done perfectly. |
| Very helpful and engaging for projects. Shows many ways to help students improve. |
| He challenges you to expand your thinking. Anyone can do what's expected.
For him, he wants you think of various way of attack these assignments. To
him overall he wants you to improve in every aspect in the arch field. |
| The fact that he gives advice about what we are doing wrong, should do, or
doing well. |
| he really spends the time to understand your design, and offers suggestions that really help to train your mind as a designer. sometimes i kick myself when i spend hours on a design... and he walks up and gives me one suggestion that seems to solve my problem, the man is good at what he does. |
| His memory and ability to draw from its sources when giving critisism. visuals helps... like showing what other students accomplished did not. |
| Palagi challenged me to work hard and do my best work at all times and on all projects. He reinforced important skills and craftsmanship and made sure I understood important concepts of the course. |
| describing architecture and making me see it in a more theoretical way. he was good at showing
ways to inspire ourselves through everyones individual project, and also used examples f our
classmates well in showcasing problem and solution matters. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| He assigned alot of projects. This prevents students to take in what they learn from the other
projects. |
| He does one thing and does a whole random thing the next. Sometimes it feels
that he makes what were doing during class. |
| Nothing |
| that he wasn't available for input at midnight! |
| Talking about past projects and students that did succesful works but not further using the information towards something that applied to us at that time or prior to assignments being due. |
| grading system could have been a little more clear as to why received some of our grades, and a
way to justify our paths would have been nice. |
|
|
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| Less work, or more time to work on project. |
| -Schedule projects before hand
-Assign projects during the beginning or ending of class and not
- |
| no suggestions |
| Spending the same amount of time and information to explain a project Before it is due rather than after and during critic. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| This class very good because many of the work was hands on. Well recommended. |
| I enjoyed exploring my potential, it opened up my eyes to new possibilities.
Chris was very helpful during the projects that I had. Overall this class
was enjoyable but hard work. |
| it was great, I've done things in this class that i never thought i could. Not only is it inspiring as an architect student, but it has tught me a lot of life lessons, i feel like i can do anything. |
| Time spent weighted against actual usefullness for understanding purposes not at all efficient. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Less assigned project, more time to do it. |
| He could be more timely on the projects and make the requirements clearer. |
| More craft and complexity put into well understood assignments rather than a whole bunch of steps towards repititious monotony. |

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The shaded seat project was an excellent project that intergrated everything we have learned in the classroom into real life practices. We are challenging ourselves to use the three basic building materials. |
| the lectures |
| The final project gave me a better hands-on understanding of everything discussed throughout the semester |
| Doing in class section drawings in a step by step analysis.
Daily quizzes to reinforce previously covered content.
Out of class, campus analysis (Sinclair, bldg. structures, etc.) |
| Quiz's every day forced me to review the notes from class and that alone instilled a lot of information on planning systems |
| I had never knew so much structural systems existed on this earth! Kris was an excellent professor, he carries the information out to the class very well and taught us to apply it into real life by assigning a task to build a chair. This project was valuable in my future learning. |
| Leaning about materials and how they are implemented in architecture work |
| The chair building project helped us to work with the materials first hand. This is a great way to learn. |
| I really learned a lot from this class especially from the final project. Not
only do you learn how to work with others and group projects but you gain a
better understanding of the materials you work with and become more efficient
at using them. This course has made me want to build more things because
after experiencing using metal, wood, and concrete, I just have a urge to
fabricate more things in actual scale. |
| Basic introduction to materials, structure, and book purchase. |
| Gaining the knowledge i needed to understand different materials and how they
work together. |
| This course is to learn more about the types of materials that we need to know in the field. Everything that we learned was valuable. Wood, Steel, and concrete lectures were all detailed and explained extremely well. I have a better understanding of all the materials. As for safely rules and how to handle certain materials, it was all explained helpfully. |
| Learning about the different materials. |
| Everything. |
| What I found most valuable was the build materials. In order to build a building, you must know what materials to use for that area and how to use them properly. I also like the quick cross section drawings we have done in class because that is a good way to practice communicating ideas. i also like the group projects. |
| I think that the final project was a good learning experience. Showing examples of what we learned in class incorporated in buildings on campus was helpful to understand application. |
| I loved that we had an quiz in the beginning of each class. it helped me remember what i learned from the previous class. I loved that Palagi gave a lot of examples and actual situations that happen in the real world. |
| Everything |
| quizes every class helped a lot |
| We're learning real world things that we'll have to deal with the rest of our lives. Building blocks of our work with contractors and construction, invaluable. |
| All of the material is excellent. Kris presents it well, clearly and
effectively. I've learned an immense amount over the semester and am looking
forward to 321 in the Fall. |
| seating project |
| I enjoyed learning about the structures aspect of architecture and how buildings are assembled. Also, the chair project was great. Actual hands on learning about how materials connect and work together. |
| everything. learning about the different types of materials. their weaknesses and strengths that help us understand why we use this material here and there. taught us ways to build using the different types of materials, more efficient ways that will be less harmful to the environment but also good on our wallets. instruct us how to handle interesting situations that we as future architects may come across in the future. |
| All of the material taught in the course were quite valuable for our
profession. |
| Learning the materials that we will have to work with in real life. |
| Every piece of information provided is applicable. We also had to work as a team which is important to our profession. |
| All information provided about effectively communicating my intent in
drawings was the mist valuable piece of information. |
| -consise informattion presented
-understandable format |
| All of the information gained will inevitably prove crucial later on down the line. It was also nice learning how things worked. I liked the daily test way of grading because I feel that it directly reflects the amount of effort and energy that students are putting in. |
| The project was more valuable than the lectures. |
| Learning about what goes into a building. This class addressed some of the real world
considerations that go into a design. The arch program here does not do that enough. |
| The project in using real material and group work. Learning about the usesage of each material. |
| the quizzes, project and illustrations |
|
|
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| building a chair |
| the submittal of drawings |
| None |
| Many times class finished early. Maybe some teaching materials were not prepared? I wished that he had taught us longer because I loved his class! |
| Some lectures |
| I found everything quite valuable, you can learn a lesson in everything. |
| Chair project which practically dominated the entire semester for a non-studio credited class. |
| Nothing. |
| In this class I personally thought that all of the things that were taught was valuable. There was nothing in this class that was unvaluable. |
| None. |
| I thought that we needed more time to build the chair. Even though we had one month to build it our group had problems with finding out how we were going to build it. We didn't know much materials that we could've used for our chair project. |
| None |
| midterm proj and final proj were unclear and confusing. |
| The students who slept and took up the good desks. |
| N/A |
| none |
| None. |
| I thought it was a very good course. |
| none. |
| Least valuable was the immense final project. I learned a lot but it was
because I was fortuante to be in a very experienced group. For those
groups who had no previous experience in these materials got the shorter
end of the stick.
Felt that the project wasn't well thought through. We were told that we
where building a scaled model for midterm and a 1:1 scale model for the
final so we bought accordingly with the amount of materials in the
beginning. I am glad that Professor Kris realized that having our tiny
original groups each do a full scale model was too much. Even with a bigger
group it was still a big and dangerous undertaking. It is impractical too
because these projects are site specific and we cant take these immense
pieces home. A lot of people spent hundreds of dollars to construct these
seatings only to not have a place to keep them. Maybe a smaller scaled
project like the midterm would be suitable for a comprehensive project. |
| The drawings that we submitted because we never got them back with any feedback at all. There
was no way to know what I needed to improve on, the examples in class that were analyzed were
not enough to know how I did on mine. |
| Lack of indept understanding of material. Group project of 10 people is too much. |
| none |

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| I found that his lectures along with his own knowledge gained from practice in the field was very valuable. We learned from what they did that was effective and things that did not work out. He also pointed out some places that is related to the material that is being covered in class. |
| he gave feedback to each group on the chair design |
| his urge to want to teach us everything by a thorough step-by-step process |
| Thorough explanations and drawings/visuals relevant in conveying topics. Takes some sessions outside of a classroom setting for campus analysis and points out the various interplay of materiality, construction methods, etc. integrated into a building. |
| His style of teaching makes the student eager to learn. |
| He would be available to answer any questions, very open and friendly. This professor is truly one-of-a-kind that I wish most professors were like in this school. |
| Great personality to learn from. Positive attitude. |
| His easy going attitude made the learning environment a great place to be. |
| The ease of talking to him. He is approachable and friendly enough where you
can have a conversation and get your brain simulated. He is also very helpful
and will suggest relevant ideas and suggestions to further your advancement. |
| Palagi is genuinely interested in the subjects he teaches and passionate about teaching. He offers valuable critiques, encourages students to push themselves, become involved, and is always available for advice. |
| His understanding of material and how it relates to real life and how its
used. |
| He was extremely enthused about the subject. There was really no dull moments in class. He made every bit of information so you will be able to grasp it and understand it more. I like how he had us go to certain buildings to see examples of joints and sites, buildings. I also enjoyed his opinions. If he felt strongly about how he disliked a certain building he'd tell us.
I like how he says "OWN YOUR OPINIONS" |
| The way he presented the material and how he made it so that he grasped your attention which in turn kept you interested. |
| What I found helpful about Professor Kristopher Palagi is that his lectures are very interesting. He gives lots of information and examples in class. He also took us to see some examples of metal work in a building. |
| Palagi knew his building and materials very well. He gave us enough information about how and when you could use the material. He uses the class time very well. One of my class that i always look forward to and one class that i find very interesting and not fall asleep in. He always gives us examples of where we would use it or how we would use it in the real world which i find very, very helpful. |
| He was available after class hours and always willing to suggest new ideas to improve our
designs. |
| he knew the material well |
| He knows his stuff, is very approachable and is authoratative without being condescending. A very good teacher. |
| He is an excellent teacher. He is willing to help students and listen to
their questions and concerns. He is one of the few faculty members in the
school who is straightforward and genuine with us. In my experiences I've
gotten ALOT of "run-around" from many professors and administrators in this
school. To be honest its rather frustrating. I understand that they have to
deal with irresponsible students, slackers, and whatnot, however thats not
the case for every student, and I shouldn't have to justify myself as being
an exception. Palagi is willing to help, answer questions, and ignite a
passion for the material he introduces. I wish he would take an
administrative position in the School of Architecture and impose some
changes. Or at least I would know when I had a genuine concern or questions
it would be taken seriously and not tossed aside, second guessed, or
ignored! Either way, he is an excellent teacher and I look forward to 321,
322 and any other class he teaches over the course of my education. |
| His knowledge of the subject and the enthusiasm that he brings to teaching. |
| He is always around outside of class to assist on projects and also gives feedback about other projects outside of his class (projects hat are not from his class). i feel he really does care for the students and he cares more about what knowledge we gain in the end, not what the finish product may be. Like what we have learned though all this, what can we take to the future to help us in the architecture field. |
| The passion he has about the profession of architecture and the way he pushes
you to think is quite valuable. |
| He would help us answer questions that we had on the course. He also gave us great advice on our project. |
| He really knew everything he was teaching. He uses it as an architect and passes on information he learned. |
| If you have any problems and questions, he is always free to help. |
| He kept information consise and focused on a broad range of things: drawings,
real-life examples, exposing us to specific examples in materials, practicing
professionals etc., offered extra credit opportunities. |
| I liked that we were able to walk around campus and see what it was we were learning about in the real world. How the structures worked beyond how to draw them and what they should look like on paper. |
| He's a very good teacher. He knows his subject well. He always available to help students. |
| His knowledge of materials, clear delivery of lectures |
| Outside of class consultation of project. |
| He's easy to talk to, approachable, and he's very helpful outside of class.
He's energetic and isnt monotone. he doesnt make the class sound boring especially since the class starts really early for most of us. |
|
|
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| i didn't learn from actually building the chair. |
| everything was valuable but sometimes the amount of information needed to memorize was a bit overwhelming |
| I wish he would upload to laulima pictures, notes, and URLs from the class as he promised :( |
| N/A |
| Sometimes confusing |
| His class was very unstructured and somewhat unorganized at times. |
| nothing. |
| He can be vague in his project requirements and expectations which could be because he is experimenting. The grading leaves you in the dark. You don't know how you're doing until you receive your final grade. |
| Everything was valuable. |
| I didn't find anything unvaluable about Palagi. |
| Difficult to understand exactly what he wants in a project and how he'll go about in doing them. |
| not much |
| We've so many students at our level we don't get enough one on one time with the prof |
| NOTHING |
| sometimes he was unprepared for class. sometimes he didn't know what to exactly teach on some days so he would go off into another subject. but even though he goes off into another subject, i as a student still learn new and interesting things about architecture and the built environment. |
| nothing |
| Great teacher. |
| none |
| His negative side comments, actions in class(breaking model, throwing the
pens) |
| His weak point is that he sometimes pushes his own idea design on students when they have their
own ideas. |
| How we had quizzes every morning, 2 drawings, a midterm and final build projects but I have no
idea how I am doing. No feedback or anything, only a quiz update from TA |

28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
|
| N/A |
| - Scheduled assignments
- Structured requirements |
| More interaction with materials before we start building |
| Possibly an outline of notes would help. |
| I thought the course was perfect and very challenging. I think more course
should be like this one because building something with real material and in
a 1:1 scale really helps you to understand what your doing better. |
| I would focus more on structure subject material relating to current application and practice. The Ching book we bought was much more in-depth than the classroom lessons. If we weren't meant to get too bogged down in details at this level in the program, a trip to the library would suffice. I would have preferred a greater level of difficulty and a focus on drafting. |
| I personally actually wanted to know more about wood construction. Reason is that we use it more on site than the other materials. |
| Have a set explanation for every assignment and project as well as thorough details in each aspect of the required material. |
| Have a class where the students have a chance to work with the build materials. |
| Our projects could be more detailed and given a list of requirements ahead of time. |
| have powerpoint slides or notes, or better visuals for his lectures, not just the whiteboard |
| Dunno, he's pretty much the bomb |
| NOTHING |
| The course was great. I felt I learned as much as I could and the full scale chair was a great project to end with. It detailed the design/build process and gave us insight to how firms work, with certain leadership roles. |
| maybe know exactly what to talk about in the next class. be more prepared. |
| The course is quite good for an intro to systems course. I think it went
quite well the way it was. |
| Maybe to be more specific on the final project. I was not expecting to spend so much money on a project. On evaluation day it felt like the project had no significance because we just looked at our benches without the praise as a group to present and explain our design concept to the class. It was a great project but the time, effort and money spent was not as rewarding in the end as I expected. |
| I really enjoyed this course. |
| Include more hands on projects. I especially liked the model/full scale chair
projects. |
| Keep the same format for lectures but change the projects for the class.
This is the first time for a lot of the students in this class to deal with
these materials. A smaller materials project compared to the full scaled
shaded seating. |
| Loosen up a bit and let students be more creative. |
| Grading structure and final project. |
| Be more clear about the group project in term of the number in a group. Everyone was surprise when they have to mix in with other 2-3 group and design have to be change after amount of thought have been put into the design. For the mid-term grade, alot of group would have gotten a better grade if they knew that their design was going to be change no matter how well they design it structually. |
| He speaks a little too fast and most of the time, I don't know what to take notes of because he keeps erasing the board. Also he could write a little bigger.
Also for the project, I think it would be better if we stuck with our own group instead of combining three groups together. I think it would give everyone a chance to design our own ideas and solve whatever problems we may encounter. I think nine people in a group is too much, some end up not doing anything; though I understand why he did this, I think. |

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...
|
| It was a very enjoyable class. The only project given during the whole class is the most meaningful. Learning how the materials work and how to put those three things into one beautiful and functional piece. |
| i learned a lot from the lectures and they were easy to understand |
| overwhelming but never boring |
| covers a fairly wide amount of information as the basis for understanding construction/materials. In general, I now see what I have learned in each class session being applied around me as I can now better gauge visually what method of construction is employed in structures and the reasoning behind the choices made. |
| I like this course. The chair project is an eye-opener for me. I have not been to the Fabrication shop until I took this class and I learned a heck of a lot. |
| Excellent. I couldn't have wished for any more. |
| Great course |
| Fun and challenging. You will learn a lot. |
| It wasn't bad. It could have been more challenging and stuck with drafting more. A huge issue was the seating project which dominated the semester. It could be a good project, but needs to be controlled in a manner that keeps students focused on more pertinent structural issues that relate to the course material and limited in a way that lowers the workload to a 3-credit non-studio class project. Quick, simple, in-class exercises with tinkertoys building trusses, arches, vaults, cantilevers, etc, would have had a more directed lesson in working applications. |
| Very helpful and get me thinking about how to use different types of building
material in different situations. |
| It is extremely helpful in understanding the field more and what types of materials we deal with. It's helpful to know what kinds of structures go on what kinds of landscapes. |
| Fairly good. |
| I found this class very interesting and informative. However, when we are put into larger groups for the chair project, there has been some minor problems. But overall, I liked the class. |
| Interesting course to take with lots of useful information. |
| It's an interesting class but a lot of information to take in |
| Great, tough and fair. |
| Excellent Class. Bottom Line. |
| I felt it was worth my time and energy. I learned a lot of material that will be crucial in th future. |
| great class. very helpful. i feel what i learned in class will carry out into the future. i feel i can use what i learned in class and apply it to everyday life. |
| Great course, cant wait for the next systems courses. |
| Fantastic course. One of the best I've taken in the school of architecture. |
| I liked this course very much. |
| that it is an important class being a foundation to the other classes that
follow. I feel that I am knowledgeable enough for the next semesters. |
| I really enjoy being in this class. I learned more about the properties of different materials. |
| Great, learn a great deal about materials appearance and structually. Shaded seating project was great to learn about material, just not the amount of member in one group. |
| This course was very interesting and I learned alot. I didn't know anything at all before this class but now, I understand why such materials are used and how they are used. |
| I find the subject matter fascinating. The project was fun, towards the end.
But getting the group together was a challenge. however, I can see the
relevance. Our field requires the collaboration between a group of people,
so we have to get use to it. |
|
|
35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| At the moment it is hard to determine improvements that are needed as I am still in the process of finishing the semester. |
| More tours of campus or showing relevant examples found in Hawaii to connect students to course content that's more personal and applicable in their own life. Include more visuals - images good, physical examples are excellent. |
| Maybe make us do more homework like drawing for example. |
| Beside from clear deadline, it was all good. |
| More field trips. Smaller final project groups |
| I dont't know to this course could be improved, if anything more projects
like our final project should be done. |
| Ramp up the difficulty or robustness of the material and focus more on the drafting. Get a grip on the group project and stagger your deadlines with actual studio classes. |
| Class was fun! |
| This course could be improved by having to do more hands-on projects. Or instead of always just talking about the ways things would, it would have been nice to "see" how things are being worked with. |
| Defined sets of requirements. |
| For group projects, I liked how we were able to choose our group members at the beginning. However, the second half of the project process where we were grouped with other members, I felt that there was very little communication. I think the concept of having to choose members was better. |
| Have progress grades in between the course term so we get an idea of how well we are
doing. Have mini hands on assignments with the use of materials discussed. |
| More visuals and activeness than just sitting in everyclass taking notes like crazy |
| no idea's? |
| N/A |
| I would suggest class time to discuss the chair project while in design development. We only met during the mid term and then chose to make the group biggers. More time with groups would have been nice. |
| The course as an intro course is great the way it is. Maybe go over group
projects a little better and make sure people understand the way they go.
Other than that, the course was great. |
| Improved by changing the projects and make them more of a comprehensive one
not such a huge undertaking. |
| I think we need to have more small scale projects. |
| More hands on understanding of each material at a time instead of just lectureing. The project was a great way of understanding material, but alot of student might not know about the material well enough to used in the right way. |
|
|
36. Other comments:
|
| None |
| An excellent style of teaching. Never was I bored in the class. |
| Thanks Kris for being an awesome professor yet again! |
| Better organization of course content. |
| overall, everything in this course was explained beyond what i expected.
PALAGI IS A GREAT TEACHER!!!!! |
| this is one of our best teachers, give him a raise, or at least a cool moped. |
| Group projects are good to force people to work together like they would be required to in the real world, but it is definitely difficult. I also like that we are able to grade our group members because it makes them feel they should be accountable, and makes it so that hopefully there isn't one or just a few members who carry the group. I like the extremely vast amount of material covered, and feel that this is a class where I definitely got my moneys worth when it comes to knowledge accrued. My difference in understanding from the beginning of the class to the end is paramount, and this is a great introductory level course for the majority of architecture students who have never worked on a real world to scale project. |
| I took this class at different school and the two classes were 95 percent the same. I should have
gotten credit for taking this class at the other school, but UH School of Architecture refuse that and
force me to take it a second time. |
| thank you. |
|
