6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
i considered this entire course to be of value. the readings as well as the lectures were interesting and informative.
Very well organized. The preparation allowed for class time to be used very efficiently.
Great professor with excellent knowledge of course material. He encourages all students to be prepared about knowing text material and participate in class. His teaching style is very engaging and happily answers any questions from students. Great teacher!
I became more comfortable with writing, since we had so many small papers due.
Writing every week, lots of feed back
I really enjoyed the weekly papers (both the 1 page art responses and the 2 page comprehension papers) and thought they really helped keep me on top of the readings. The reading choices were also well organized (they all built upon the weeks' before) and each reading was very interesting. I was also grateful that Dr. Lavy provided all the readings on Laulima at the beginning of the semester. Everything was provided and laid out.
(1) Dr. Lavy prepares excellent lectures with relevant slides. (2) He makes the material come alive with his accounts of the Jataka tales, travels of the Emerald Buddha, etc. (3) The weekly writing assignments developed my ability to engage with the readings and to think critically from day one to the end of the semester.
The readings and the lectures were very valuable. I learned a whole lot from them.

no suggestions - it was a really good course.
I felt like in the papers I could never write about what he wanted exactly. He said the art papers were pretty free choices for us to take where we wanted but then when I wrote them I hardly ever got the high marks I wanted because I didnt include every detail, even though he hadnt taught it yet, and we had to write it all on one page. He is a very tough grader and while this is good to make one a better writer it is pretty discouraging.
maybe talk a little slower
I would have liked a little more class time to focus on the writing aspect of the course. That being said, I really appreciated the time Dr. Lavy took to read each paper and provide ample comments.
I liked the format of the 'W' focus class, but the way in which I always approached the weekly papers was usually on Sunday night. This usually lead to decent grades but not always a complete understanding, which I take responsibility for. Maybe if the papers were due on the Friday before the material was covered I feel I would have put in more effort towards the work.
I can't think of anything.

Since this is W focus, I am so tired about the writing but Paul is so knowledgeable and I enjoyed his lectures very much. Thank you.
i think paul is an excellent professor and his class was one of the most interesting art history classes i have taken. he made me want to learn about the subject.
I enjoyed this course a lot! It certainly sparked an interest to visit Thailand and visit the many places discussed in class. I also found myself on many occasions sharing tidbits of info of artworks/architecture discussed in class with close friends. They certainly plan to join me when I head over to Thailand.
This was much more than just a survey of Thai art. Each lecture was interesting on its own, but together they supported Dr. Lavy's overal thesis of how art contributed to the construction of Thai identity.
Lavy is a great professor, he is enthusiastic and is willing to further explain information if we need it.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with our class.
Writing a one to two page paper every week is a good system, I think. I could really see that my writing was improving.

Paul is an exceptional teacher and resource. I most specially enjoyed when he would tell us myths and stories about a certain god or goddess.
instructor's vast knowledge of different SouthEast Asian cultures and how they all relate or affected one another
Great teaching style and very knowledgeable about course content.
The aspects of traditional Balinese art and how they changed when Walter Spiers introduced other styles and mediums was very interesting. Also realizing that wayang kulit puppets are made of animal skin :-( And Borobudur!

Not sure that the two "text books" are really necessary, Mr. Lavy explains everything quite clearly- the books were merely supplemental.
REALLY HINT to the students when you expect a discussion, because we seem terrible as a class when it comes to keeping up with the reading on time. I appreciated the review at the beginning of each class, but I also felt it took a lot of time away from lecture which could sometimes make us rush through a topic, or fall slightly behind on schedule.
I have no problems with Paul's teaching style. He is a dynamic speaker and this keeps the class from ever being boring. The only problem was the intensity of the slide ID quizzes. The ammount of information required to know is sometimes overwhelming, particularily for the 3rd slide ID quiz. The first 2 were ok because there was no artist name and most pieces were from one or two regions. However, I appreciate him being a little flexible if the dates or place names are slightly off.
if possible, bring in actual examples of art works

Great class! Mr. Lavy is a lively and engaging instructor. Enjoyed it very much!
The Art Department would be wise to keep Paul on staff for as long as they can! He's a great lecturer and presents the information in an understandable manner, and seems to keep with the same level as students. Expectations are clear, grading is clear; Paul has his sh!t together. Thanks Paul for everything, and enjoy your ego-boost! =)
Hinduism was most interesting to me and I'd love to take a calls on Hindu art, or art of India. Unfortuantely, I'm graduating this semester so I won't be able to take any more of Paul's classes. However, I have recommended him to all of my friends. I liked his focus mostly on Indonesia, because to me, the art and culture from java, bali and so forth is diverse enough to keep it interesting. I also feel like their developments and art is the most interesting of the SE asian island area. Thanks Paul!
I really enjoyed this class. Paul kept me interested in the subject matter every class.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I find that professor Lavy was one of the most valuable aspects in this course because of his knowledge on the subject. He could answer any question and made great references to other ideas that helped cement the concept. Professor Lavy also made me become a better writer, as much as it was difficult for me at times.
Paul has a knack for picking readings which are both informative and engaging. His teaching style is approachable and he knows how to peak the curiosity of his students.
Like most professors, he demonstrated a mastery of knowledge about his course subject but his most valuable asset is his effective communication skills; his lectures were always very interesting and engaging. He also gave off a vibe that made him easy to talk to.
Definitely attending the lectures, and the reading responses we were required to do helped me to think critically about the ideas and concepts we were covering during the lecture.
His lectures and the papers he assigned
The challenge. Even though I was very frusterated and discouraged I enjoyed the weekly challenge of writing a paper on something I had no prior knowledge of. It did make me realize that I have MUCH room for improvement.
The part where i'm thrown into an area i have no clue about and gotta stay afloat! The readings were more about critical thinking were also very interesting. The Professor's knowledge and experience in the field especially makes the lectures worthwhile.
I like how Professor Lavy clearly explained why we got the grade we did on our papers. A lot of teachers just seem to mark up papers with lines and circles without any explanation. Professor Lavy gave helpful tips and encouragement when he gave us back our papers.
The course was well organized and methodically planned. Of all my classes this semester, I felt like I understood and agreed with the grading system, the syllabus and the order of the assigned work in this class above others.

More movies! No seriously. If movies can be found for a class, I have seen that they are a creative an interesting way to convey information to students.
None. Excellent course & teaching methods.
I do not have any. he is my favorite teacher and has made me the most excited about what im learning in a class to date
Great Job!! I am very impressed by Prof. Lavy. he is very knowledgable and articulate. I'm not sure why he works here when they don't appreciate him very much. I can definetly see him working at a highly esteemed college. A small conceptual school perhaps
The course was very enlightening on a subject area i have no interest in! I AM glad that i took the course, but I feel now that the class might better be suited with a prerequisite in a general "SE Asian Art" course. The reason is that when taking the course without some kind of prior knowledge on some basics like religion or sculpture, there is nothing to grab onto from the very first day even though Professor Lavy does set out a few days within the course to give us the run-down on Buddism/Angkorian religion among other things. Another aspect is the way Angkor and the Cambodian people are brought to our attention through most of the class. The great majority of us have no idea what is going on, and the approach can be summed up as "Yay, Angkor!! RAH-RAH-RAH!". There were many classes where the information was passed with a tinge of chauvinism. In this sense it isn't fair for the Professor or us that we don't come in without some grasp of SE Asian art. Lastly, some kind of periodic reviews would help greatly to orient oneself between each new monument or time, maybe with handouts or visuals, since there is a tiresome monotony learning each new sculpture upon new sculpture without some way to help frame the information.
The instructor was obviously well informed about the subject matter. His lectures were incredibly interesting and his speaking style was clear and witty. I found myself really engaged in the subject matter more than any other lecture style classes I had this semester. My favorite part of the class was a time when we were discussing budget cuts, ect. before class started and he brought us into the lesson by saying something like, "let's forget about these issues and get lost in the art of Angkor. That's what I do." It really shows his love of the subject and the fun way we approached the lectures
Don't change a thing!!!

*An uncharged and uncontroversial atmosphere is crucial to a course like this. I was hesistant, indeed resistant, to taking a course like this, thinking it was going to be one which would leave me stressed, annoyed, accused, accusatory, and frustrated after each and every session. Had I taken a course like this at another school, it surely would have been like that. Paul's approach and attitude - and those of my classmates - made this a relatively stressfree course, discussing the issues on an intellectual level, without personal attacks or the like. *The variety of texts and perspectives presented was wonderful, relying not too heavily on Said, nor on the Arab world, nor only on American or British or French Orientalism, but really complicating and problematizing the topic, discussing a number of aspects and perspectives. I got a lot more out of this course than I expected, and am very glad to have taken it.

Just keep up the good work.
I think the course could be improved if, somehow, it were made clearer, through readings or through a lecture segment, what the chronology at hand was. In jumping around from one aspect to another, and from one topic to another - from Grand Tours and travel diaries to collecting and museums; from Egypt to China and Japan - I got quite lost as to the chronological narrative of the development of Orientalist phenomena over time. At the end of the class, I don't have a clear picture in my mind of the overall development of this phenomenon or discourse, only bits and pieces; I don't have a solid grasp of what was going on simultaneously, or what came before or after what. Where do rugs fit in chronologically against Islamic-inspired and Chinese-inspired architecture? When does the vogue for Chinese porcelains really peak, and where is that chronologically relative to Gerome and the chronological timeline of Orientalist painters? Paul demonstrated an amazing knowledge of European history - and world history more generally - which I very much envy, and which helped a lot to place these artistic or discursive developments against a historical backdrop, within a context before or after Napoleon, the Opium Wars, etc. But even so, for me, at least, I think a more chronological, historical, narrative approach - not a dramatic restructuring of the course, but somehow a reinforcing of chronological awareness or understanding alongside everything else that is already just fine with the way the course is done - would be most helpful.
