21. Other comments:
I think this course was great. I learned a lot, it put a label on historical oppression and trauma. I always knew about it, but never knew there was a name. I just thought the historical trauma was in my own head, but after taking this course, I realized that it is real. There have been studies done on it, and yes, people are still being oppressed because of it. This course also taught me how to approach empowerment in a different way. It taught me to first look at a persons culture historically before moving forward with empowerment and how to take on a cultural approach for empowerment for many different cultures. I feel that many of the topics that were brought up hit very close to home for me, and it made me reflect on myself as a person, as a Native Hawaiian, as a single mom and as a woman. I've never had a class make me look into myself so much, and actually made me want to improve my self for the sake of my children and my culture. This class definately made me want to change the way I do things, and makes me a little more patient before passing judgment on to people because of their different ethnicities and cultures.
This course has really inspired me, and further reminded me of WHY I choose to study and practice social work. Mahalo nui!
Crystal helped me understand the significance of this course topic as it relates to practicing social work in Hawaii.
I learned alot in this class especially regarding oppression and empowerment among indigenous people that I can use in my social work profession. The online class was a little daunting but the format presented on laulima made it easy to take this class. Thanks Crystal!

I took this online class with great reservation because I think of social work as engaging with others. I have been so satisfied with the way this class was set up for discussion and interaction with other students. I have met three people whom we chat outside of the course discussion and discuss issues. Dr Mills is inspiring!! When I have asked questions, I have always had good feedback from her that has enhanced my professional understanding. I hope I get to take another class from her. She is awesome!!
For an online course, this class exceeded my expectations, for presenting relevant information, learning opportunities, and ability to engage others. I appreciated the variety of assignments and the instructor was very good about responding via email and chat room as well as timely return of our assignments. Part of me wished she could have offered a summary of thoughts and learning after each module, as a form of feedback about the material as it relates to our learning. I say this because the only avenue of learning the instructors knowledge on the topic was the PP lecture, so I would have appreciated hearing more from her on each topic. Overall, an excellent course, I would highly recommend it!
I truly enjoyed the course and learned a lot! The online stuff took awhile to get to use to but after a few weeks things flowed pretty well. I missed meeting the students face to face but having regular postings and photos of everyone was very helpful in feeling connected. I wished Laulima functioned with the normal cut and paste and spell check features... Mahalo for a great course!

I'm aware it seems a bit unrealistic that any class would be scored perfectly. However, my answers were thought out and reflect my true feelingss about this course. Even though this is my first graduate level course, I have taken many many courses over the years in my previous degree seeking majors and almost none measure up to this course. In every module of this class I was able to apply the information to previous professional experience, and found it very very useful information for my future goals. Most importantly the material in theis course was also applicable to my personal life in many ways. I really could go on and on in describing how much this course has positively effected me but I'll just say that I believe this course has set me on a much clearer path as far as my professional goals and carreer. I have been shown insights from the matieral and the information shared by students that have limitless applications to my life and profession. Also the class was very well organized and expectations were extremely clear. I really liked the set up as far as grading and testing....just really well done. It was done in a way that really promoted growth and learning not just anxiety and time consuming work like so many courses do. Well done Dr. Mills...I wish I could take more of your classes in the future! Thank you for such a fullfilling experience.
Excellent course
I had a wonderful experience learning on the online course this semester. I wonder if this could be an option for all UHManoa SSW students? Crystal was excellent in her preparation of materials- many articles to read and reference, as well as critical powerpoint slides to lecture on each modules topic. The material was very important to my SW education and hope more of the material on social justice and oppression could be discussed in other classes. Thank you very much!

17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Instructor was very knowledgable of the subject area. She was very challenging and encouraged critical thinking. Overall great class.
She does not seem to enjoy teaching in this forum of Distance Education. Her dissatisfaction with this seemed to come across in a strong fashion.
I enjoyed Crystal's class. I found many of the role play and materials interesting enough to utilize it in my daily work.I would definitely recommend this class taught by Crystal to others. i would also like to take another class taught by her as well in the future.
She's knowledgeable and a well rounded professor. She definetly knows her stuff.
maybe there are some cultural differences that make it difficult to understand certain things. it's also difficult to go back and look at things from what seems like such a textbook perspective after years of working in the field.
She knew her stuff!!
she seemed to relax as the semester went on. At first, there was a sense of disconnectedness -- of being "the professor". The DE program is unique, especially since all of the cohort members have been in practice as social workers in some capacity or other for many years. To be taught to as "students", rather than in some way colleagues, has been challenging, and a little off-putting, at least to me. It has been my hope that this was due to the instructor's recent move to the state, and unfamiliarity with the DE program, the technology involved, etc. As the semester went on, this did seem to be somewhat the case. Hopefully the instructor will continue to become more acculturated to the Hawaii "vibe".
I think Crystal is a very knowledgable instructor and she really knows her stuff. I got to know her better during her site visit.
Crystal is a bright and intelligent professor which exemplifies her quality of instruction to the upmost professional and educational level. She gives me the opportunity to think and explore the topic of families and groups. I have learn a tremendous amount of materials from her. Her midterm exam was challeging but it demonstrated the quality of teaching level brought forth to me and as well as the class members. She is very concerned and caring person. Towards the end of the semester my husband got sick and she was very accommodating to my family as well as my educational needs.
There were two required texts for this class. I spent hours reading these texts for each class as per the instructor's syllabus. When the instructor lectured, she did not mention anything from the required texts. One had to infer what the lecture topics from the lecture to the texts. I'm not sure I've related every single lecture point to my text readings. The texts will be useful for future references as a practicing social worker. The examination asked the same questions repeatedly in different forms. Same redundancy of questions in the assignment papers - when you answered a question, you had to repeat the same point asked in a later question. It seemed that the instructor was not comfortable with the technologies used in teaching a DE class. The exercises given were ineffective because we had to act as if we were actually united physically as one class in a classroom before the instructor, a method of teaching that she seems more comfortable with. Many times it appeared that she was trying to take the actual DE situation and conform it to her experiences, rather than adapting to the DE classroom situation. She would be better suited to teaching at Manoa in the classical face-to-face situation. She was a bit authoritative when it came to classroom control rules (seating, attendance). Students had to move their seating whereby she could monitor them closely, for her comfort. I did not understand why a student from each site had to send an email to her naming the names of the students present and absent. That's her function. After all, we are graduate students and it's our dime and our responsibility to fulfill our student obligations without being treated as if we were grade-schoolers.
Crystal is an excellent professor who is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Her classes were interesting and she gave her students opportunities to practice the skills and concepts learned in class.
The instructor obviously has quite a competent range of knowledge on the subject. She knows it well. However, her mode of communication is somewhat abstract. At times her lectures lacked sufficient examples to communicate the depth of her knowledge. More down to earth illustrations of the concepts would have helped.
-- snipped --
I think overall it was great class. I believe sometimes the professor spoke very quickly and it was difficult at times to follow all the concepts. I would re-review the material at home and it allowed me to process the information presented in class. Overall, I think she provided a good feeling in the class and allowed for questions to be raised for clarification if needed. Also whenever the class began to get dry, she would raise open ended questions to allow particpation or group involvement.
Crystal is precise! Her ability to convey the value and clarity of the most fundamental concepts in case assesments will be some of the most valuable tools I have yet to learn. Crystal is highly intelligent and conveys the connectivity of theoretical framework to practice wisdom.

24. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The course was difficult to teach in this forum, plus the instructor was not happy in trying to teach in this format.
The exam was not what I expected. I would like to have more clarifications on taking the exam prior to the actual exam. The troubles were mainly with the format of the exam. I lost many points due to not being able to see the entire exam before submitting it it. Crystal was nice enough to let me redo the one's I missed, but I wish I could have had the opportunity to go back to the ones that I did complete to look over my answers before finally submitting it in for grading.
Excellent course.
the course curriculum didn't seem to flow well for me.
It was a pretty good course considering the instructor is on O'ahu, and we are on the outer islands. Overall, it was a good course.
It would have been nice to have more role plays in the class, or some mechanism to get more of an interactive feel for group facilitation. This method of teaching, however, does not lend itself to this well, since the cohort is spread so far geographically. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions to remedy this either.
This was a very good course, however a lot of material was covered each week and we were expected to recall it during the examination. This was a bit difficult.
I have learned a great multitude of families and groups. In the beginning, I did not have a clear understanding of the subject matter. My professor made my learning interesting and very educational. What I have learned within this class I can use it in my practicum and at work.
-- snipped --
This course is interesting and gave me many tools to use in my daily practice at work.
Overall, I felt like I learned some very important things about working with families, especially about assessment. However, I would have liked to have more personal feedback from the instructor. The mid-term exam was scheduled directly following the class presentations, after which there was no direct personal feedback from the instructor. The only feedback we received from the reflection paper was that we were all given the full amount of credit allowed for the paper. We turn in our last paper the last day of class and I doubt there will be any direct feedback from that. I connect with my professors by writing for them. If I don't receive personal feedback on my writing or my work, I don't feel connected to the professor.
-- snipped --
Yes I think overall it was excellent. The handouts were awesome very relevant to the work I do and can use the information with clients. The Groups book is great; easy to read and follow and useful. Grading very fair.
One of the most important and practical courses that I will utilize in my career and life. Valuable, and necessary!
