Professor Kato was very available as an online instructor and responded promptly to questions and concerns. This is so important for a distance learning instructor and he seemed to always be on top of it!

Really hard to do a group / final project in a online class when you haven't met any of the other class mates

The weekly assigned readings and responses, blogs and news forums were a lot of work, on top of four other classes I personally was taking. Also, I think the discussions should have a time limit. I appreciate that Professor Kato wants to encourage participation and does not want time limitations. However, people responded to readings weeks after they were assigned and many people had already responded. I feel as though this set up is not as conducive to student interactions and discussions.

He's a great listener, genuinely listens and takes time to allow students to really discuss and understand the subject matter. He shows everyone utmost respect. He is humble yet extremely intelligent and sharp

He treats everyone equally.

He would inquire about those who were missing from class, and always displayed a willingness to help those who were falling behind in class.

27. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?

I especially liked everything! His powerpoints and choice of reading material, PNA, concetual terms quizzes all of it.

He gives examples how to do an assignment.

I loved the amount of class discussion in addition to the way in which Professor Kato always tried show the practical application, of what we discussed, into our everyday lives.

He made class very interesting.

Loved the class and was sad to see the semester come to a close so quick.

29. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?

YES! Everyone must take this Class it is so critical, essential for everyone to have this knowledge about the world and its Political Science!!

Yes. The student will learn a great deal from this class.

10000% yes!!!!!!!! Everyone in school should take his class. It can change the way you view the world around you and the way you live your life.

He was very willing to work with students' schedules and any conflicting events. He was also very helpful with catching up on any assignments that I had missed or helping me understand something I was not getting.

By being understanding with presentation of "controversial" materials and giving disclaimers when material had potentially offensive content.

27. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?

The course is most definitely college level material. Some classes start off slow, but this one dives right into the material from the beginning.

28. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

I enjoyed his very laid-back, yet purposeful teaching method. I knew that he was in control and knew what he was talking about, but I also felt very comfortable with asking questions and discussing topics.

Very knowledgeable and concerned about the material and the students.

29. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?

Yes absolutely. Masahide is a great teacher. He is super easy to learn from and get along with.

Absolutely. He cares about the issues and topics covered in the class and the students. The focus is more on learning the material rather than worrying about grades.

Yes!! This has been the most interesting class of my college career. Other student absolutely have to take this amazing class!

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Professor Kato always ensured that all his students understood the material, if not he'd give the time redo the assignment correctly.

Constant e-mails checking in, even to see how we were doing. Also checking on our progress and was very gracious when realities of life occurred. Introduced himself even from the beginning and encouraged our constant communication. Overall personality was always genuine!

Kato always made sure that when ever we needed help with something, we always could go to him for help. If there was a problem we could go to him and he could help us with the best of ability.

In an especially heated issue, he took the time to explain his opinions and then also my own while not saying either was necessarily right but giving each the respect they deserved.

I found this class to be a little too radical in terms of its presentation Throughout the course the information was too fast and hard to retain, in addition, I thought the class in general was promoting a movement (anti-government, anti-state in favor of the Kanaka Maoli cause..

23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?

I enjoyed the analytical essays, it gave the students an opportunity to speak their minds, whether it be their interpretation, solutions, etc. relating to current or past events.

I appreciated the constant modules and checking in. It made the class more manageable. The lessons and resources were always related to the content. Extra resources were always given to understand the lessons better.

What I disliked,was when sometimes his explanation was vague. It was hard to understand what he wanted us to put into our work. What I like, is that he took the time with me to help explain in depth what I had to do. Whenever I had email Kato about my homework which was almost everytime. He always wrote back and helped me on it, no matter how much emails it took him he still took the time to help me get the assignment.

I think Professor Kato should let spell check be his friend.

I the subject matter was too broad and furious. I found it hard to retain and comphrehend the subject matter I read. I thought politcal Science was the study of politics but not in this form..I really must be behind the times..

24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

Thank you for introducing me to a whole new world and the politics that deal with indigenous cultures.

Always gracious and understanding and really cares about students. He pushes students to think critically and provides good feedback. Also gives great local examples when learning to make a difficult subject easier.

Good guy. Somebody I would have interesting conversations with outside class.

This is my first online class, I believe Professor Kato's format and structure for this course should be used as the ideal example for online classes.

Definitely! Such an awesome teacher and I didnÊ»t even get to meet him in person. Made such a difficult subject more understandable to me and appreciated the incorporation of the indigenous people here in HawaiÊ»i. Also encouraged critically thinking about the law systems and rights of the indigenous! Awesome teacher!

Yes, I would recommend Kato to other students. He's fair, he cares for his students, he works with his students when they need help. He's a teacher that pushs you to do you best and think outside the box, that's the kind of teacher we all need, to help us grow in life.

Prof. Kato showed a great deal of concern for his students through his questions to the class about our understanding of the subject matter, and his availability for counsel at all times.

I think Dr. Kato has done a good job teaching Anthro 200 for his first semester at WCC and has been very flexible with the class assignments. I have learned a lot about Anthropology that I didn't know before from his classroom discussions, reading assignments and essays. He is a nice, friendly instructor and this made it easier for the students to be involved in class and made for good class discussions.

I felt like he really knew his subject and that most of his lessons were based on his actual experiences.

I liked how he was always prepared to teach us something new.

i disliked the syllabus and the fact that he took on another teachers method. The method and syllabus that he used was quite comfusing at times and didnt make since. i would think that you would read what you are going to be talking about in class prior to the class not after. but when using his own methods i seemed to be able to better comprehend what cultural anthropology was really about.

The instructor was very easy going and it made the class feel at ease whenever we needed to ask questions and made it easy for class discussions.

I liked that we get to learn about different cultures.

I liked that open discussions were encouraged so people could give an honest opinion.

I liked the long discussions and that he took the time to put together slide shows

well it was really boring. all he did was talk and talk and talk the entire class period.

Although I am fairly well read as a lay person in Anthropology, I learned a great deal from Prof. Kato. I thought he did an excellent job of introducing us to and explaining Anthropology and the reasons for antropological methododlogy. His knowledge is deep, and we learned from text, discussions, and hands-on experience.

yes as long as he is using his own method of teaching. he explains things well and seems to be interested in the students and if they are retaining the information or not. he is an exellent teacher!

I would recommend Dr. Kato to other students. I think the students need to understand that they really need to read all their assignments ahead of class and be ready to discuss the info they read in class, because there is a lot of class discussion and you really need to stay involved.
