13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is a good professor and expects a lot out of her students. She is also very helpful with essays or if you have any question.
Professor Bareng is a great professor, she really encourages students to come in and talk to her if they have any problems. You can tell she's passionate in teaching her subject, but sometimes I feel like we're really rushed because she talks rather fast when we have a lot to cover. She challenges her students to think and I'd like to have her for another class.

She's a great instructor with a vast wealth of knowledge on all of the subjects that we covered. She's also great at spurring discussion and listening to the thoughts and ideas of students. Her lectures and writing assignments are thought provoking and push students beyond their mental comfort zones.
Very helpful with any problems with class material (IE English/writing problems, material of the class). Very willing to help outside of class if you don't understand some of the material. She creates activities that helped make the class a little more fun, such as the jeopardy midterm review, as well as the debate.
Nice but very demanding. Sometimes I felt intimidated to ask questions. But I will say that later in the semester as we all got more comfortable, you loosened up. You knew your materials, but oft you have to realize that a lot of the students are not on the same page. I did like our one on one meeting, I felt as if you were more personable.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I liked the first two book readings, each chapter was a pretty heavy load of reading but they were interesting and made me think.

The writing prompts were a great way to formulate our thoughts about foreign diplomatic issues. She gave us great responses that further completed our understanding about significant world events and current news happenings.
Learned a lot of background information on the United States that was never apparent. A good eye opening course to explain how the United States works, its a delicate process examining how society accepts what the Government does and does not do.
I loved reading the materials and getting to know things that happened in the past and how that affects decisions now. You opened up doors that I was naive to, and/or didn't know how to apply them to real life (got me thinking about politics more)

I liked learning about the green zone and the war in Afghanistan. My favorite book was Imperial Life in the Emerald City. It was the most interesting read and was easy to understand.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
None
The last book we read, Empire' Workshop, I really did not enjoy. It was complicated and his ideas seemed like they were all over the place, which made writing the last paper extremely difficult for me.

I strongly understand that AMST 212 is a writing intensive course and there is a highly possible chance of there being books to read, but the amount of pages asked of us to read is a bit overwhelming in my case. Along with my other classes and work that I had to worry about, I barely had time to get in ALL the readings required for the class. I have no problem with reading a book for the class, but maybe lessening the book count to 2 or cutting down the amount of pages to be read would help a lot with other students.

-the last book was really hard to read or understand -essay prompts given out too late (exception of last one)-when we were already finished with the book
The last book was a little difficult to follow. The discussions were a little lazy because not everyone grasped the material. It's understandable however, considering the narrow subject matter.
Greg Grandin's book was a difficult read which resulted in a poor final essay
The load of reading. Reading 3 heavy books in one semester is kind of a lot. Especially when you read a book within 2 weeks and then have to critically analyze a part in order to write a paper. I know that you are trying to challenge us, but you have to think more in the thoughts of this being a 'beginning' class (200 level). In honesty, this was the very first time that I was learning about these materials, and for me to quickly read a book, try to find something to analyze even though I was just reading the book for content (to absorb information)and then bust out a paper was very hard for me. I just felt like I was dumb the entire semester because I couldn't critically analyze like everyone else because I was just learning the new materials. I never knew these before. So my suggestion would possibly cut out one book. Or take a longer time to read them.

Learning about Latin America, the book and material were interesting and very informative but I think because I have focused on Asia and Europe learning about Latin America.
I am not enjoying this last book, Empire's Worksop because i'm finding it hard to get though and understand.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I think this class is a superb course to take if you want to know more about the dark past of America. It really opened my eyes to global history an connected it to with what is going on now.

-favorite part was during the second book, Green Zone - only part I was genuinely interested in -though for those who do not have a high interest of global contemporary issues, this class would be tough to get through
It's a great course with a lot to offer. There's definitely a lot covered, but the information was presented clearly.
Very informative, came out of the class knowing a lot more about how the United States deals with foreign affairs, that are contemporary global issues.
I did enjoy the course even though I had a hard time with the reading, analyzing and writing. I did love the smaller class, I felt more personable with everyone. I did love learning about things that I would have never read before. I feel more learned, and that is because of this class.
I would recommend this to other students.

Fairly interesting and I believed that we covered most of the contemporary issues that are important today.
I enjoyed this course and felt i benefited from taking it. I was very hesitant to stay in the class but i'm glad i stuck it out. I felt i have gained a better understanding of the United States and our influence in other countries.
This course is invaluable. The content covered really ought to be brought to the attention of the general public. In an ideal world, anyway. At any rate, the American triumphalist narrative needs to be refuted.

This is a great course with a great professor that has the passion and knowledge it needs to teach this class. Overall good class, but really time consuming and challenging.

I really liked that you switched up the second semester of class. Instead of giving us the paper prompt after we read the book you gave it when we were at the beginning. That way we could read and think about what to write about. I also liked how you would define key words in class--we'd have an entire class dedicated to key terms, their significance, history and how to remember them. This tactic is easier with the Empire's WS and even Emerald City, but with Kinzer's book I could see how the defining of key words would be much... because there are so many.
Eriza was a great instructor, i enjoyed learning from her. She knew what she was talking about and was enthusiastic teaching it which makes it easier for students to engage in. I would have enjoyed exploring more countries but I am well aware of the time restraint. I think Eriza did a wonderful job expanding my knowledge on the subject matter.
Possible suggestion: it might have been nice to have more lecture notes available on Laulima. The general shift back toward intellectual and academic discussions is interesting, but questions of feasibility arise.

She's a good professor to have.
She knows what she is teaching and is easily approachable.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable about the material and does well to stimulate class discussion.
She is a very energetic teacher. Class discussion often veered into areas that I did not feel were relevant, but overall they were productive.
She was a very good teacher that stimulated us to talk and participate during class.
I really liked Eriza! She was energetic and fun, and knew a lot about the course material. She understood that we were students with other classes as well, and worked with us to succeed.
She is a great teacher and expects a lot other students. She has a passion for issues dealing with America and it shows with her teaching. She is very enthusiastic with teaching.
This class was very awesome! I learned a lot about American foreign policy and the negatives of what our country which is why I signed up for the class in the first place. She is a very interesting teacher and she really wants to help students. Although the class was very challenging I tried my best to get the grade I deserve. I love this class and it made me want to take more American Studies classes.

The aspects of the course I liked the best are class discussion and the extra credit opportunities.
I liked the different readings
Class discussions on interesting topics.
The books we read were a very good way to approach contemporary American issues. They were up to date, and critical of America's approach to foreign affairs.
I liked the fact that we had to participate during class because it allowed me to learn more effectively.

17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The aspect of the course I liked the least is having to write a lot on the exam.
I didn't enjoy the reading response too much because I am not good at talking aloud.
The amount of reading in the course was a little overwhelming.
As stated above, class discussions sometimes became about topics I felt were not relevant to the issue at hand.
I didn't like that we didn't have a word bank on the first midterm other than that good course.
I really enjoyed everything about the course.
The course moved way too fast . I didn't like that we had a paper due when we were already half way done with the next. I feel like the readings should be cut down more.
It was too small. I like bigger classes.

The way the course is structured is good.
Good course and good material. Very interesting
Excellent course
It is a good primer for students who are thinking of taking more international focused or political science classes. As a basic entry level course, I'm not sure it is entirely appropriate for those who do not have an interest in those areas.

It is a very tough course and requires a lot of time for reading and writing.

That she is very open to discussions and listens to your opinion even if she doesnt agree with it. She is a very good teacher she challenges us without discouraging us.
Eriza was fantastic. Always encouraged class discussion and asked the hard questions. Was tough on grading but made everyone improve. This was one of the best college courses that I have ever been in and I wish all courses were taught this way. She really pushed the class to come out of our biases and think from different perspectives.

Absolutely amazing teacher teaching an amazing class. I highly recommend to Americans and non-Americans everywhere. Ms. Bareng is a master of her craft and a credit to teaching.
Eriza did a fantastic job teaching this course. It was easy to talk to her and she always made her expectations clear. She really knows what she's talking about and was fair towards all students. I came into American Studies with a hesitant because I don't generally enjoy politics and such, but she really opened my eyes and taught me a lot.
Eriza really knew her shit! She always brought up interesting, different!, point of views that sparked lots of debate and discussion in class. She made the environment comfortable to speak your mind and not be shut down by others. She was very clear on assignments, always going over things again to make sure every person in the class understood. She was also very easy to get in touch with and not intimidating at all!
Great professor. Knew a lot about American history.
She was very knowledgable, eager to help students both in and out of class, open to student opinion, and overall a great instructor.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
i liked the discussions we had in class. they really make you think twice about things. Also they taught me to be apprehensive about what you learn. you cant take everything you read or hear to be true, you need to come up with your own interpretation about the news.
I loved the class discussions. Hands down. We had a really good group of students from different backgrounds and Eriza was great at focusing our talks to push the envelope.

Discussions about US and the world issues - not only Eriza gives her own input and direct where the discussion is going, she also encouraged other students to speak too, which I really liked, as I learned not only from the teacher but other students as well.

I really liked what we went over this semester, we learned about another way to look at government and society and what really is going on. she taught us to question what the government does, to read between the lines. Kinzer was the greatest textbook I ever bought for college, totally worth buying and not selling back!

ALL of the readings, and the in-class discussions. I especially liked the guest speaker, I learned a lot from his lecture. Also, I like that Ms. Bareng encourages debate and discussion of topics.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
theres not much that i didnt like. i mean there was a lot of reading and i think thats what i liked least. i didnt mind the reading just at times it was a little overwhelming.
It was A LOT of writing. But we knew that going in because it was a Writing Intensive course. Some students needed that to get them to read the material. I would get frustrated with myself because I had no problems reading but would have difficulty writing. I wouldn't finish the paper if I didn't feel like I had a good enough "reaction" or insight to write about. And then I ended up NOT writing too many times and didn't complete the assignments.

The readings were complied on top of each other a little too much. Reading twenty pages from one excerpt and then another fifteen with only one day between classes to do so seemed a little much (more so when teamed up with homework from other classes)

The only thing I can think of that I disliked was somedays that we watch a video in class. They were always informative, but I don't generally like to watch movies because I prefer to be interactive.

Great course, I would recommend having Eriza as a teacher to any of my friends.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS CLASS! I ACTUALLY LEARNED INTERESTING THINGS THAT YOU DON'T LEARN FROM ORDINARY HISTORY CLASSES! The readings, although some were kind of loong, were all in relation to the curriculum. The homework wasn't strenuous but was still challenging!Favorite class of two years at UH. :)
Good course, learned a lot about American Global issues in history. Very useful information! I recommend this class.
A great course, made me want to take more American Studies classes, and learn more about the course content. It motivated me to explore American foreign policy and America's role in the global community further, even outside of classes.

More about the reading responses: They were not particularly stimulating, and it was difficult to condense an adequate summary and response into two pages. They might have been more useful in terms of analyzing the readings had we not had to summarize the readings/ not been limited to two pages only. If the main concern is motivating students to read, the readings themselves were good enough to have the desired effect, at least for me. All in all, however, I loved this class, and it was a pleasure to take.

Very good, betters the class. Lectures are useless to me, I'd rather go to her sectionals.

classes were somewhat boring.. had great potential have l wouldnt have the calss set up as a lecture though, i think the sections were far more productive than actual class

Eriza was a good instructor. Although I hardly talked in class, i felt like she wanted me to speak because I never spoke in that class. She really knows her American Studies and more.

I really liked the group discussions in labs because it gave me the chance to put my input on what i thought about the topics given in class. Also help preparing for the midterm was helpful too by discussing the different ids. Some of the books and articles were very interesting and made me think.
Studying the "American Century"
An aspect of the course I enjoyed was the Film Screenings. I particularly enjoyed the last two films and I did learn from them.
I liked when we discussed about the readings, like the books like Inheritance of Loss and the Overthrow. So class discussions were really interesting, even though I didn't contribute any ideas, which I regret.

I did not like the random short responses that we would have to do. There would be little to no warning about doing them.

I think that we didn't really have a lot of time during the exams to finish. I know I was definitely rushing through some of the IDs
being required to participate especially on topics that i am not strong in makes it harder to contribute things without feeling "dense"
way too many people i know you dont have control over that but if there is anything you can do make the class smaller that would be awesome for future students
What i didn't like in class were the numerous amount of readings that we were expected to do. Although my classes had readings too, it was duable. This was too much, i think there should a reasonable amount that related to the topic the instructor would be discussing.

There was nothing that I liked least about the discussion class.
Probably getting into small groups and discussing articles that needed to be read. This is because I'm usually unprepared and I don't know what goes on. Even though the article is explained by a fellow classmate, I sometimes don't understand what is happening.

lecture was very repetative. Come in, sit down, professor talks non stop for 30 mins, then asks us what we think. Not a horrible approach, but doing every day gets old and not as effective as time goes on. Student interest dropped and not as many kids would show up because the same thing happens every time.

not my favorite or something that interests me but had some interesting view points
pretty good because the course showed a different perspective on the subject rather than what i normally knew from high school.

Having the smaller groups on friday really helped me to understand the book or article that I am reading then to have it explained in lecture.
This course was really good. :) Like it all depends on how the student is because if the student is shy like me and scared of being wronged, then maybe this isn't the right course. But the material for American Studies is quite interesting. I would probably take this class again if I was really into American Studies, but this was quite an experience.
