18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
By bringing us out to the reef
the subjects of the guest lectures didn't seem to flow throughout the semester
I can't think of any ways!
I think she had done well, no need for improvement.
Less guest lecturers
The class was unorganized. Cindy Hunter often seemed to be making up assignments as she went along, and didn't know who was responsible for what was due. She seemed unprepared for class regularly. She told the class on more than one occasion that she didn't have time to grade all the papers she was assigning. She shouldn't have assigned papers she didn't have time to grade and give feedback on.
So much emphasis was placed on the scientific papers, and we were never really tested on them. Felt that it took away from time we could have used to learn about the things we'd be tested on. Also, having so many guest lecturers made it harder to study. Many of the things on exams were points the guest speakers didn't elaborate on much.
Overall the class went very well. There were a few times that test questions were to open ended which made answering them completely difficult.

It would be really great if we could make a class trip to the ocean or Coconut Island to look at corals and see some of the research being done.
I thought everything was wonderful. I loved bring introduced to research projects that are important to our understanding of current issues.
Have less quantity of reading and more quality of reading.
Try more student participation during lectures
Keep up the great work
Too many hot topics papers! Narrow them down to studies only conducted in Hawaii. And certainly don't add any to the syllabus at the last minute.
Nothing, everything was great and taught me so much.
LESS WRITING! for a non writing intensive class there was a lot of writing.
Less hot topics, some of the readings were not beneficial to my learning.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Having the guest speakers
Group discussions/speakers
I liked learning through her class presentations the best.
Learning about coral morphology and their bond with zooxanthellae.
Having so many guest speakers that are active in the field was a great learning experience. I also really liked reading current papers about research and findings that are occurring in now.
Some of the speakers had interesting lectures.
The guest lectures allow for many different view and opinions on hot topics in the science community which is very valuable
The primary literature
The speakers were a very interesting aspect to the course, i really enjoyed them.
Updated readings on current published papers and classical information in past studies
I really enjoy listening to the guest speakers as they are experts in their fields and bring a lot of valuable information. This class is also very practical; I'm glad that we did so much reading (although it was a lot at some points) because it showed how applicable the topics we discuss are to the world of research and conservation work.
I thought it gave us great opportunities to network
Guest lecturers and being able to see other scientists work.
All the guest lecturers
Everything, the teacher's lectures and all the guest speakers. She had us read papers from classic to cutting edge to get a broad overview of coral reef ecology. This has been one of my favorite classes of my college career.
Reading hot topic papers were very helpful in understanding in greater detail about coral reef and the impacts it has. With reading the papers and incorporating information given by guest lectures helped maximize the understanding of coral species and the environment.
I loved the course, but there was a little too much reading.
the guest lectures
all the guest speakers
I liked learning about a topic that i knew little about, and everything was explained in a way that i could easily understand.

Very nice and excited for teaching what she loves, I would take this class again if I had the time!
In addition to the poor organization of the class the prerequisites were not appropriate for the class. As a senior Zoology major with all the required prerequisites I thought this would be a good learning experience for me to expand my marine knowledge as I have little background in corals. Instead I often felt lost and struggled with understanding the papers.I often had to do additional research just to follow the paper or the lecturer. The degree of detail and background given by the guest speakers varied greatly. Some speakers I followed easily and understood fully, while other lectures were completely over my head. I suggest more prerequisites in the corals subject for future students that will ensure success in the class. Also, much of the class was group work with rotating accountability but Cindy Hunter neglected to keep track of this rotation or who was attending the class so the group workload was often highly uneven.

I would love for more classes to be taught without a textbook, instead, learning from mentors
Great job
Awesome class.
Great class!
Very fun class, learned a lot about coral reef ecology
Wonderful professor, great attitude, and very knowledgable.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Become more familiar with the technology being used in the classroom
The technological issues plaguing the lab section have been a little distracting.
Continue doing what she is doing.
Work on being prepared for discussion classes. Some classes were spent trying to figure out how to set up the projector or computers and a lot of class time was wasted.
No need third hour to watch movies or to take quizzes. If needs to have technological problems addressed and solved before class.
One improvement would be to get the media in the recitation running on time.
The way Laulima and the syllabus were set up was very confusing. The WI section could've been organized to be much more clear.
better communication
Not so much the the teacher, it's just a matter of being a new set up and kinks being in the WI cycle between getting reviewed papers back on time/turning the revised version in when getting the reviewed copy later. This was taken care of at the end of the course, which I am sure many people that fell behind due to their reviewers appreciated.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed some of the guest lecturers
I really enjoyed the naturalist drawing exercise
Guest speakers, Professor Amned & Professor Hunter were entertaining and informative with the material. Really learned about a lot of the zoology of the origin of the Hawaiian Islands.
I enjoyed listening to different speakers and learning about the field they worked in.
Different lecturers lecturing their area of expertise.
I enjoyed the guest speakers and the presentations
I loved all the guess lecturers
Interesting broad spectrum of material.
I really enjoyed the 2 optional field trips. I also liked how the course was very broad and covered a lot of different fields of study like geology, botany, zoology, biology, etc.
make the exams more relevant
All the different guest speakers and the different topics covered.

Course was fun!!!
Overall I enjoyed the class and would recommend it to other students, however, I felt the discussion classes were a waste of time. In most of the meetings we had to sit and wait for the teacher to figure out how to use the computer and projector, but by the time it was set up class was over.
Great professor and great class!
I think it is great that everything in this course pertains to living in Hawaii. Everything we learn is useful to me because I have lived here my whole life, and this class taught me many things I never knew before.
They should switch up lecture once in a while not just being lectured at every single class with boring power points.

-- snipped --
Have the guest lectures that have similar topics be back to back so we can grasp the concept better, also some lectures put false info on their slides causing confusion for quizzes.
It was unfortunate that our class setting got changed several times; I understand that this was outside of Dr. Hunter's immediate control, but it was definitely disruptive.
Not much besides making sure all lecture slides are available online for review (most of them were readily available right after class ended). I also ordered the wrong book because MyUH listed the wrong book under required materials.

For a review just tell us what we don't need to remember like memorizing all the different kinds of species of snails (like 30) when it wasn't on the test.

That I learned about Monk seals.
The lectures on animals were by far my favorite, they were amazing to listen to and know more about.
Guest lectures were consistently awesome!
The discussion sections helped a lot when it comes to more intimate interaction with the professor as well as fellow students, especially since lecture classes are big. Lectures from various professionals and academics make the content interesting.
recitation section was awesome
I liked the lectures. Most of them were very interesting, because of the content from guest lecturers who specialized in diverse topics of Hawaii's ecology, as well as Dr. Hunter and Dr. Amend. This was one of my favorite classes at UH
Multiple guest lecturers, vast amount of interesting material.
All the lectures were very interesting and because they were done by different professors it was very motivating to go to class.

All of the guest lecturers.
I like how the course is organized--how there are guest lectures every week.

All of the ratings, except #15, are of Dr. Amend. #15 concerns Cynthia Hunter. I believe Dr. Amend needs to have a stronger voice in the class. He is a good teacher because he is knowledgeable in Botany and very to approachable. My advice for course is to not call it BOT/ZOO. I really didn't feel like the subject went into depth with the animal faunas. It lightly touched on the animals. The lectures, unfortunately, were somewhat repetitive due to different instructors coming in to teach and not communicating with each other.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Explain assignments and expectations better.
I don't know
I would like the teachers to actually teach more. It seemed like they didn't teach very many classes at all. Additionally, I wouldn't let people who are not planning on joining MOP take this class.
nothing, it was great!

Good, interesting class
It was a good course that definitely opened my mind and taught me many new things
Good class, fun atmosphere, great for future MOP kids. Not good for seniors who missed their opportunity to join MOP and just wanted to learn more about marine issues. Going to the library, basic assignments, etc. were freshman level as opposed to senior level.
Good.
awesome!

6. What did you like best about the course?
hands on experience of research application
I enjoyed the field work the most.
Being able to work in small groups and create a project based on an area which you find interesting. Also being out on the field collecting the data and forming as a team.
Being out on the boats and exploring the Bay
Being able to go out in the field and actually put knowledge to work, as well as observing the goings on at Coconut Island. The guest speakers were also quite informative.
I think it was an extremely valuable course and I learned a lot in a very short amount of time. It was a good introduction into the process of doing marine biology research. I wish the course would have been a week longer so we would've had more time to collect data and learn GIS. I had a lot of fun and this class will help me with grad school and my whole career.
I enjoyed getting to experience making our own project and completing a project from start to finish. And being out on the water every day.
The flexibility of her schedule
I liked the first-hand, in the field experience and the fact that it wasn't just lectures and readings.
I enjoyed being able to be in the driver's seat and take control of my own education. I truly got out of this course exactly what I put into it, and that was refreshing.
I really enjoyed going out on the boats and into the water. Whether we were collecting data, or just exploring, it was always refreshing and fun, regardless of the weather, tide, or amount of work to be done. Staying on the island in the classroom and staring at computer screens all day was not as enjoyable. Being able to explore the Bay and see all the magnificent organisms that reside here was truly a life changing experience. In future years, perhaps it might be good to allow students more time in the water just for fun. Another thing I enjoyed was the time spent with classmates. Due to the living situation, I have been able to create many long-lasting friendships and being surrounded by them definitely helped to keep me relaxed. Whenever someone is upset or stressed, there is always an ear to listen, another shoulder to lean on.
The course broadened my experience in field techniques
Opportunity to go out into the field and collect samples for our own experiment was important to me because it served as representation for future research I might do.
The fieldwork.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
applicable
I liked that we came up with our own research question and survey methods to answer that question. It was less directed than I would have expected but that just forced us to really think creatively about solutions.
I improved my writing skills and was able to help lead a team into creating a whole project. Whilst improving old skills and creating new ones.
ArcGIS was a really great tool to learn how to use to represent our data in a new way. I also really liked learning all the boating stuff.
The ArcGIS portion, as well as the need to solve field problems on the spot and work with group members after long days.
I thought learning GIS and being able to design and carry out an entire experiment was extremely helpful and I developed a lot of skills that I will maintain throughout the rest of my career.
Learning ArcGIS and boating.
Working with people.
I found the real-life experience of field work valuable, the skill development of working in a group to accomplish a task.
This course really gave a glimpse into the world of field research. With guest speakers coming in frequently, it was nice to explore the different types of work that are happening in the field of Marine Biology research.
The surplus of information provided by both instructors, the T.A.'s, the guest lecturers, and my peers was the most valuable aspect of this course, in my opinion. I was able to learn something from each person I encountered during the course of this month. Whether about the research project itself, or something small, it was always reassuring to know that all questions would be answered somehow by someone, and that there was always someone to seek out when something was unsure. I never felt alone or lost for longer than a few minutes. Having T.A.'s who have recent experience with this class was extremely helpful because they could relate to the experiences we were going through, and gave really insightful advice on everything, from living situations to research methods. Having them there to lead us on the right path when the instructors were not enough was so reassuring.
Boating experience Field experience ArcGIS Developing teamwork skills/leadership skills Writing skills Presentation skills Developing relationships with future colleagues
Most helpful about the course was our GIS portion. It seemed like a skill that I can build on and use in my professional career.
Having to think on my feet all the time in order to fix the multiple problems that we faced.

26. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
apply the research to projects already in motion so as to offer more direction in real life situations
Dr.Hunter could have been more knowledgeable about survey methods beforehand to lessen the amount of mistakes made in the field.
To remember who is doing what and at what time, so that everyone can be prepared the night before. Also group meetings would help further get her and the groups ideas across.
Have field notes all be online submissions, have each group do their own separate report, and provide more information to students about logistics with moving on island and things like that before the first day of class. Also, provide more constructive criticism with writing assignment feedback, because question marks in track changes doesn't mean anything to students and doesn't help us fix our writing.
Organization for one, of schedules and assignments. Changing due dates and leaving us in the dark as to what is expected of us is pretty unreasonable. Also setting a better example for students. Reef and student safety did not seem to be a high priority for her at all. It needs to be clearly stated at the beginning that the point of the course is to try many different methods available in marine biology.
The feedback that we received on our reading summaries was frequently unclear and unhelpful. There were often just question marks given as comments and I didn't really know what that meant. Sometimes the workload was pretty overwhelming with the daily logs, the reading summaries, field work, and everything we had going on. The daily logs were a cool idea at first, but by the middle of the class the novelty had worn off and it was just monotonous. The data collection and ArcGIS was kind of the same thing every day so it was hard to write about it. I felt like the class was very disorganized. I know that the whole point of the class was for us to be in charge of our own projects, but we could have used more direction. Sometimes I felt like it was useless to even submit a proposal in the first place when we had to fight every day to collect our data in the way that we specified in the proposal. I was also frustrated when we had been collecting data a certain way for a few days and then we were told we had been doing it wrong. That happened multiple times and it just made the class so much more frustrating because we weren't sure what we were doing so we would ask for help, get told it was fine, and then get corrected after the fact. Combining the papers at the end of the class after doing everything separately caused a lot of headaches and stress that would have been eliminated if everything had been combined from the start.
Unorganized, needs more structure and direction. Created a lot of stress among students. Would have liked more time discussing our projects with the instructors. Needs a router specifically for this class, the internet situation was terrible. Needs more thorough feedback on papers. "No." is NOT good feedback. $50 dollars a week for food was too much, I think $30 is more reasonable.
Give more time in the course..
Give students more options as far as projects (and species) go. Being constrained to two species felt somewhat limiting.
Be more straight-forward. Often times, questions were asked and multiple different answers were received. Be sure that all necessary materials are available to students with ample time to make sufficient use of them. Developed an improved understanding of how much is really being asked of the students and how much time is available. If sufficient sleep is necessary for a day in the field, that needs to be a realistically obtainable thing, not requiring students to be up late working on several homework assignments at once. In feedback (especially on summaries) be more explicit about what is expected. Many students struggled to understand how exactly they could improve, and grading was not felt to be fair and impartial for each and every student.
Dr. Hunter was not always prepared for the class, and often put her students under a lot of stress, and sometimes danger. There were many times when students asked her for specific equipment for field work and she would respond with, "I have given you *said equipment* and you're just not looking hard enough." Due to this unpreparedness of the class and lack of trust, students were deprived of necessary equipment for nearly 2 weeks - which hindered the research project entirely. She also showed clear favoritism to one of the two groups, which left the non-favored group at a large disadvantage. Dr. Hunter overall needs to be more concerned with the students' safety, both mentally and physically. Many of the comments made on summaries and papers were not helpful and made it obvious that she does not carefully read what the students write. Dr. Hunter also made many empty promises to her students, which, again, left her students out in the dark during a majority of the month. Whether it was, "we have a lot of money for this class, we can get it for you," or "we will send you the protocol right away," we were promised many things that never happened. The due dates/times and the number of assignments were also extremely unreasonable. There were several times where students felt overwhelmed with the amount of work needed to be done. Dr. Hunter should also seriously consider allowing each group to submit their own paper, instead of combining the two groups (survey and spatial) together at the end. It is illogical to have the groups write an entire paper separately for the entire month, only to combine the papers at the very end with little time to edit.
Give correct information No favoritism Don't be condescending
It would be nice if Dr. Hunter could have applied her years of experience in research to help us in our own research projects. She didn't really have any specific feedback on field methods or even if our reports were good or bad. She remained very generic and general with her feedback.
Better organization of the course so as to preempt future mistakes from happening.
27. Any comments about the TA?
The TAs were all helpful!
The TA's were helpful and fun. If we needed help when they weren't on island we could easily call or text and would be available to provide information. They gave us insight on past years which helped formulate our projects.
Keisha was awesome! She went out of her way to make herself available to students and always had a positive attitude. She tried her best to make things fun for us, and gave really helpful advice and suggestions on how to deal with just about every problem that came up in the field, and among students.
They were great, it would have been nice to have more one on one time but I realize they are quite busy with their own research.
I thought all of the TAs were fantastic. They were excellent boat drivers and were always helpful when we asked. I know we asked a lot from them and I don't think any of us expected everyone to put as much extra time into the class as they did, but I am extremely grateful that they did. I wish they would've gotten paid more for all their trouble!
The TAs were very helpful and provided a lot of information. However we should not be feeding the TAs with the food we purchased every day on the boats.
TAs were very helpful in branching any communication errors or misunderstandings...although sometimes a little biased in opinion. Very fun, none-the-less...
The TAs for this course were very helpful, prompt, easy-going, and knowledgeable. You could really tell that they cared about the progress of the class and the well-being of the students. I really appreciated their input and feel that they were valuable aspects to the class experience as a whole.
TA's were all fantastic! So friendly and relatable, being that they'd already gone through the course. The help received from the TA's really helped to shape the course, as well as the final projects submitted. Huge thank you's to Keisha, Ryan, and Lauren!
Keisha was a wonderful T.A. and fulfilled all expectations completely. Although she was extremely nice and laid-back, she was also very strict and stern when necessary, which was good to keep the students on the right path. Her experiences from taking the class in 2011, and overall knowledge of marine biology, was extremely helpful. Having more than one T.A. for 14 students was a smart maneuver. She, Lauren, and Ryan were more than helpful to our entire situation and experience. Whenever we could not communicate well with Dr. Hunter, or whenever we just needed to vent out steam, the T.A.'s were always there to listen and give advice. They also spoke to Dr. Hunter for us when they felt they would be more successful getting through to her. Having the T.A.'s around not only made the entire experience go by a lot smoother, they also made working every day more fun. The three T.A.'s together were a perfect combination of help, fun, experience, and advice.
TAs were knowledgeable, helpful and approachable
Keisha Rodriguez was a great TA, she provided power points to helps us, was available to answer questions, and gave great advice. She was always positive and just wanted to get us to produce the best work. Lauren Van Heukelem and Ryan Logan provided us great food and transportation and offered helpful advice as past BIOL 403 students. They made sure we were on track.
Knowledgeable about the class from beforehand and helped prevent us from making mistakes. Also had good knowledge of the area being surveyed.

33. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
illustrated real research problems to work around
I enjoyed the field work the most and seeing what our results would say. I don't like to write much, but I do appreciate the emphasis on keeping my writing concise through weekly assignments.
Being out on the water collecting our own data for our research.
Definitely being out on the boats, and learning to use ArcGIS.
The field work and observation days.
I enjoyed going out in the water everyday and working on the project in a group setting.
Being on the boat and being in the field. Living on site with the research center. Although...more time off (weekend) may have been appreiciated.
I liked working out in the field and collecting data for a personally designed project the best.
I enjoyed field work, and being able to discuss field problems/plans out loud with a panel of peers, TA's, and professors in the morning. These conversations really aided field work.
Again, I really enjoyed being able to go out into the water and spending time with my peers.
Gaining field and boat experience
I found the guest lectures interesting and provided a broader scope of research areas than our species of concern.
Being able to work out in the field as a team and actually collect "real" data instead of "staged" experiments and results in classroom-only labs.

35. My overall evaluation of this course is...
good. The class was split up so focusing on the same areas with the same tasks daily can become monotonous and can take the energy out of the group
It was a bit unorganized with the constant changing of the syllabus/schedule. There was also less "directed-research" than planned. But I feel it made me stronger as both a researcher and person. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and had a blast. I also learned a lot of valuable things.
Excellent course, makes you work harder and as a team. Although there are minor glitches throughout, with boat problems, group problems, storms. It was a fun class where I was also able to improve my writing and research skills which will help me in the future.
An excellent course that just needs some refinement. More flexibility with making adequate materials available to students would be much appreciated, as well as more information about logistics beforehand. Despite all the craziness with planning under the circumstances, it was a really fun class. My favorite course that I have taken so far at UH.
Quite good. I kept my GPA up my entire undergraduate career in order to take this course and it was fun and informative.
Has a lot of room for improvement but is a very valuable class to take.
I fully enjoyed the course for what it was. More communication would have been helpful. Getting in the field and practicing what you preach (teach) is very important in fully understanding all the dynmaics of this degree. This course is very important if one is to go into this career..little more more organization would help.
Excellent. I feel that this class has been one of the most valuable experiences I've had in my field of study (Marine Biology). I've learned many lessons that I otherwise would have not, and I have developed important life skills and teamwork abilities I would not have gained from being confined to a classroom.
Course was fun and helpful, although a bit unorganized. While it was nice that students were more able to have control over their own work, it's also important that students don't feel that they are contributing more, or possibly even more knowlegable than the professor.
This class has both extreme positives and extreme negatives. As for positives, this class has allowed students to have hands on field experiences that are not always available. Students also build many skills such as communication, leadership, and writing. Students learned boating safety, received their boating licenses, installed ArcGIS to their personal computers, learned how to use ArcGIS, and expanded their knowledge on two species of concern which are unknown to most people. In these ways, students were exposed to many experiences that will be helpful in the future. However, I feel that the negatives outweigh the positives. This class was clearly not planned out in advanced, and it was truly hard to believe that this is the 10th anniversary of BIOL 403. Students were not exposed to any of the logistics or information about the course until the first day. It would have been nice to have a little more than 24 hours to pack and prepare to live on Coconut Island for an entire month. The work was always overwhelming. In between getting up early to load the boats and make lunch, and guest lectures and GIS labs, and making dinner, and blogs, we also have summaries, daily logs, and several drafts we had to worry about. In this final week, many of us agree that we have very little time to work on our final product, which includes combining two perfectly separately written papers and a powerpoint presentation. We were also unable to use all the equipment which was necessary and all groups were unable to sufficiently conduct the proposed experiments. The instructors themselves also need a lot of work - they need to spend more time on the island with the students, and they need to DIRECT much more. Overall, this call is good with regards to experience, but when looked at a different scale, this class is unorganized, unprofessional, and ultimately not the best. Although I'm thankful to have been given the chance to experience this class, there is just too much I would change.
It is worth it.
Good. But could be much much better if had more extensive structure and planning. For instance, if we were aware of where and what equipment was available to us instead of boxes with things people thought was in there. Or if the schedule was less Or if the internet, which was crucial to the entire course, was consistently working.
The overall goal of the course (field research experience) was met, but the class needs to be better organized with clearer communication between the instructor and the students.

The BBQ for friends and family is a great idea, but it would be nice to do it on a day where it isnt right after a lab. Also, if we are paying all the money for the food, the TA's and TI's should have to bring their own lunches because those of us with minimum wage incomes can barely afford the food fee as it is. Also, if there is money leftover from the grocery shopping it should be returned to students evenly. The stipend is really nice, but don't take on as many students next class if you can't pay the students the same as previous years for the same amount of work. Also, in general, a more adult-like treatment of students could occur. At times it felt like we were being talked to and treated as kids. It is a learning environment and everyone's safety is paramount, but we aren't 13 and are able to be treated like young adults.
I believe that there should be a change in the faculty assigned to be in charge of this course.
I really appreciate the effort of the teachers and the TAs.
