18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
It was well done.
Not much. She's great as is.
I honestly don't think she needs any improvement. Great professor!
BEST COURSE EVER!! Corals are cool!
Loved the course as is
The hot topics were a lot of work. Although they were interesting we always ran out of discussion time. I would limit it to only one paper a week.
Add a field trip for the class!
More clarity on who will talk and group makeup.
I don't think there's anything to improve. UH manoa needs to pick up their slack and fix up our classrooms. The projector especially. Luckily professor Hunter pulled through for our class.
The due dates on laulima we hard to keep up with. This course also should count as an oral communications credit since where was a lot of presenting done in class
Can't
- Making the class WI credit course - do more lecturing on coral, coral biology, diversity. Less guest speakers about their studies
Some homework assignments would really help drive home points, i.e. worksheets
Less emphasis on hot topics, maybe more research?
Make lectures more rigid and the learning objectives of each lecture more clear. The guest lectures were great, but it is tough to follow a lesson plan when each lecture is "broken up" by a lecture that may not necessarily be related to the last.
have more rotations in the groups

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed her kind demeanor.
The readings
Everything about it
Guest speakers
I did enjoy having so many guest speakers. It was nice to see what's currently being done in the field, and to put a face to some of the names on the articles we read.
Everything marine
All of the different guest speakers that were brought in each with an extensive knowledge about the certain topic. They were all great and really reinforced what the instructor was going over.
I enjoyed having the multitude of guest speakers during class
I really appreciated the take home exams because it allowed me to learn the material it asked for and not just cram for an exam
Guest lectures created a nice diversity of material and brought in great people in the field.
The depth of the learning.
Guest lectures by prominent researchers within the field. It's undeniably effective when students are listening to those at the forefront of the field.
Very interesting and enjoyed guest lectures
Hot topics
the Coral studies
I liked the take home tests the best
the guest lectures
Hunter is an excellent professor who has done a lot of research work and definitely knows her material. The guest speakers that she invites to class reflects the interpersonal relationships that she has created throughout her career and this really speaks a lot about her.
the take home exams
The guest lectures were great. It's really awesome and inspiring to hear from respected, talented scientists about their work in the field. Reading the scientific articles really helped my comprehension of scientific writing.
The lecturers are an interesting new way to learn
groups were set up to meet other people in the class different guest speakers came to talk about their work assingments made for broader thinking of thesubject

I really enjoyed this class, it was phenomenal
I am sad this course must end ð??ð??ð??
This course is not Writing Intensive, yet there was a very large amount of writing. For someone taking two other WI courses, it was very difficult to keep up with this much writing. I enjoyed the course immensely, and I do feel like I learned a lot, but if I had known how much writing I would be doing in addition to my other courses I would have had to take a different class.
Man, there were so many hot-topics (papers) for this class, how was this not a writing intensive course. . .
Wonderful class, thank you so much.
Originally I dropped a course and enrolled in Zool 410 during the second week of school. By the second class it was too late to drop without a W. This course deserves a semi-writing intensive credit and should be listed as WI. I do not excel in writing. I'm borderline handicapped when it comes to writing and every assignment was a challenge. The weekly writing assignments make up a large portion of the grade as well. All in all, I gained more real world knowledge than I payed for, and that is always a plus.
Really should be considered to be an oral communications course and writing intensive
None
the take home exams made up for the overload of information we received from the guest lectures. some of their studies seem irrelevant or not as important to corals.
The course was very enjoyable, but the Hot Topics felt like busy work. They were easy, but irritating. I learned nothing from them, but that is most likely my fault for not reading in depth. The process of writing summaries get repetitive and I feel that if we are given a worksheet with analysis questions regarding each paper, we, as students, would have gained much more than simply writing verbatim.
1.5-2 page summaries on 12 hot topic assignments (2 scientific articles, sometimes 3, sometimes veeeeery long) every week is more work than I think you realize. While the papers complimented the course nicely, writing a total of 38-50 pages is hard work. Its often hard to keep up with them when you've go other classes/exams/projects/papers to worry about. With that said, I do appreciate your leniency when it came to turning them in late. With all that writing, however, I wish the course was classified as a WI. In any case, I loved the class. Thanks for being a great professor.
good class, enjoyed all the different aspect of coral reef knowledge

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The 5 two page papers and the final paper draft were for no points. The class had little points in general and these assignments lacking points gave little incentive to do them or do them well. Also the quizzes were over a large amount of material and so little questions and points. The class would be better and more fair if the quizzes were 8 or 10 questions. Cindy is a great teacher but sometimes a little unorganized an unclear on due dates of assignments because she forgets or doesn't know them herself.
There is sooooooooo much material it is hard to know exactly what to focus on, especially with so many diverse species of plants and animals. Better clarification on what to study for each weeks quiz.
Being more organized would definitely help future students. The class was very disorganized, and with that large number of students in the class, this is unacceptable.
Maybe more discussion about the content shared at recitation time. Discussion could help students to make connections since there are so many topics and different speakers.
try to have the powerpoints up on laulima before the quiz
Deadlines need to be clearly organized and syllabus.
To be more organized and aware of due dates.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really enjoyed the content of the class and the multiple lecturers. It gave a well rounded view of the content and class.
The variety of guest lecturers were great additions for this class.
I think a lot of the information was interesting, however, having a new topic every lecture OVERWHELMING.. especially when there is NO study guide for the exam.
The assortment of speakers and topics pertaining to the Hawaiian Islands were pretty amazing!
I liked how each lecture had a different topic and was taught by a professor who knew the material best
the outside activities
I liked how we had experts come in and inform us about topics that we probably would never be able to learn about in other classes.

25. Other comments:
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I especially liked having many different speakers, as it's far easier to be engaged by someone who is passionate about a subject, and it was very easy with many of the speakers to become similarly excited about their field (even if the field was insects). It gave the opportunity to become far more intimately acquainted with these topics than if we'd heard the same lecture from someone less passionate.
NA
This class was very unorganized. The students didn't know what to expect on the exam. There is SO MUCH information that it is unreasonable to expect us to study everything. The writing assignments are pointless and very confusing when turning in. The due dates should be better organized. For the optional field trips there should be extra credit, especially since students are taking time off work/out of their weekend to attend them. The TA (Randi) was EXTREMELY rude and demeaning to students. She shouldn't be allowed to teach. She made us feel stupid and insignificant. Maybe if the lectures/quizzes/exam(s) were more reasonable, there wouldn't be a large number of hostile students. The grading for the exams should be more consistent. Many people received points while others got points taken off for the SAME ANSWER. This is one of the worst 400 level classes I have taken.
Great Class
The main thing that I am taking away from this course is facts. The only studying that is done is strictly memorization. I do not enjoy classes like these because they do not make one think much, rather just repeat back information. I also think that the weekly quizzes were a bit excessive, they almost required you to study as if they were an exam, not a 5 point quiz.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Since the course has an overwhelming amount of material to cover, I think it would be very helpful if she gave out a list of vocabulary that was important. Especially, since spelling definitely a big factor on quizzes and exams.
To make it fair for students it would be best to upload slides within the week that it was discussed. I understand that it is just supplemental, but it is unfair when the Tuesday class doesn't get to look over the slides, but the Thursday classes do.
stress key points and reoccurring themes
More field trips.
Way to much information for a fill in the blank exam. Quizzes are not helpful and the TA was not friendly.
There was to much material taught to have the exams as short fill in the blank and short answer. Multiple choice or essay might be a better option
We had a few flubs with the projector that took up class time. That was my really only gripe. That I didn't get to learn as much.
More direction on the course projects - perhaps mandatory outlines or drafts, something to help students work on it throughout the semester.
I found that what was stressed on the quizzes and exams seemed nit-picky with regard to the overarching themes of each lecture. While knowing certain facts and statistics is interesting, I wish the testing would have focused more on the overarching take-away messages, ones we might be expected to remember a year from now.
She is a great expert in her field and portrays her passion through her lecture which is amazing. But I wish she stated what she expects from us more clearly. It didn't help that her TA was difficult to approach and ,if approaches, either confused you or didn't help you at all. Dr. Hunter has great intentions and is a extremely passionate, but the amount of work expected to remember is insane.
They can improve the teaching of this course by uploading the power point material at a time that is fair for both sections. Some sections was given just a few hours to look over power point material or study guides that were uploaded late while the later section was able to utilize the material to study for the quiz several days in advance. at times, the material was not even uploaded in time for the earlier section to see it at all before the quiz and the later section did.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really liked the wide variety of subject matter covered. I have learned so much more about Hawaii, not just just geographically, but about the culture as well.
I liked how slides and study guides were posted for each lecture. I enjoyed the different guest speakers and the environmental analysis.
the diversity of lectures
Entertaining and informative discusion sessions.
I loved the guest lectures and the discussion with my peers.
The way the lecture was set up. I greatly enjoyed hearing from various speakers everyweek and the variety of topics taught.
I liked the variety of lecturers - experts in different fields. It also really helped to have their lecture slides to review - but I came to depend on these for studying and it was detrimental the couple times the slides weren't up. Recitation quizzes were helpful to review and get an idea of what questions would be like for the exam.
I liked having so many experts come to lecture, it made this course really feel like being part of science in Hawaii.
The overall speakers were super informative. Sometimes, i think they forget we are college students who aren't used to deep graphs such as the ones they presented but they were all great in their field. As Dr. Hunter encouraged us to walk out and look around us and take in our surroundings; now that is something I can take from this course and apply it to my everyday . :)
I enjoy listening to the guest speakers every week and the current studies/research that they are conducting.

25. Other comments:
the discussion section is a waste of time
This class covers so much material in detail. Wished that we covered key components in discussion to help us prepare for the exams. Course was unorganized and the syllabus was wrong for half of the semester.
The TA seemed un-approachable after class.
Would definitely do again or similar course.
I must admit, Dr. Hunter and Dr. Daehler are great lectures but I wish they stated their expectations clearly. The TA felt like she was there to challenge us rather help us. I learned a lot in this course that I can't show in the exams because they are incredibly difficult even if you study with all the resources they give you.
I emailed the TA a few times with questions about the material but got no reply.

25. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Can't really think of anything, the course was well laid out and very manageable and enjoyable
There should be a time for discussion on an important current event going on in the marine world. It would really stimulate the students and get everyone to read about those important topics. it could also help us in the future by being able to talk about those types of subjects in a professional manor.
26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Dr. Hunter was very understanding and flexible, willing to give extended deadlines with reasonable cause. She was easy to talk to, very personable and warm.
She gives great criticism on writing.
She gave us examples on what she was looking for.
27. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Kind, understanding, knowledgeable
Diligent, Helpful
28. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher from what she did teach of the course and speaking to her outside of class, though she did not give most of the lectures so I didn't get a really good feel for her (classroom) teaching style.
She was a great teacher. She was very helpful in our writing and giving us advice for our future projects. She encouraged us to think of great ideas to work with.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
So much emphasis was placed on the scientific papers, and we were never really tested on them. Felt that it took away from time we could have used to learn about the things we'd be tested on. Also, having so many guest lecturers made it harder to study. Many of the things on exams were points the guest speakers didn't elaborate on much.
The class was unorganized. Cindy Hunter often seemed to be making up assignments as she went along, and didn't know who was responsible for what was due. She seemed unprepared for class regularly. She told the class on more than one occasion that she didn't have time to grade all the papers she was assigning. She shouldn't have assigned papers she didn't have time to grade and give feedback on.
the subjects of the guest lectures didn't seem to flow throughout the semester
Try more student participation during lectures
I think she had done well, no need for improvement.

Less guest lecturers
Nothing, everything was great and taught me so much.
Too many hot topics papers! Narrow them down to studies only conducted in Hawaii. And certainly don't add any to the syllabus at the last minute.
Have less quantity of reading and more quality of reading.

LESS WRITING! for a non writing intensive class there was a lot of writing.

I can't think of any ways!
I thought everything was wonderful. I loved bring introduced to research projects that are important to our understanding of current issues.
By bringing us out to the reef
It would be really great if we could make a class trip to the ocean or Coconut Island to look at corals and see some of the research being done.
Overall the class went very well. There were a few times that test questions were to open ended which made answering them completely difficult.
Keep up the great work
Less hot topics, some of the readings were not beneficial to my learning.

23. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Some of the speakers had interesting lectures.
Having so many guest speakers that are active in the field was a great learning experience. I also really liked reading current papers about research and findings that are occurring in now.
Everything, the teacher's lectures and all the guest speakers. She had us read papers from classic to cutting edge to get a broad overview of coral reef ecology. This has been one of my favorite classes of my college career.
Guest lecturers and being able to see other scientists work.
I liked learning through her class presentations the best.
Updated readings on current published papers and classical information in past studies
Learning about coral morphology and their bond with zooxanthellae.
the guest lectures
I loved the course, but there was a little too much reading.
The primary literature
Reading hot topic papers were very helpful in understanding in greater detail about coral reef and the impacts it has. With reading the papers and incorporating information given by guest lectures helped maximize the understanding of coral species and the environment.
all the guest speakers
The speakers were a very interesting aspect to the course, i really enjoyed them.
Group discussions/speakers
I thought it gave us great opportunities to network
Having the guest speakers
I really enjoy listening to the guest speakers as they are experts in their fields and bring a lot of valuable information. This class is also very practical; I'm glad that we did so much reading (although it was a lot at some points) because it showed how applicable the topics we discuss are to the world of research and conservation work.
The guest lectures allow for many different view and opinions on hot topics in the science community which is very valuable
All the guest lecturers
I liked learning about a topic that i knew little about, and everything was explained in a way that i could easily understand.

25. Other comments:
In addition to the poor organization of the class the prerequisites were not appropriate for the class. As a senior Zoology major with all the required prerequisites I thought this would be a good learning experience for me to expand my marine knowledge as I have little background in corals. Instead I often felt lost and struggled with understanding the papers.I often had to do additional research just to follow the paper or the lecturer. The degree of detail and background given by the guest speakers varied greatly. Some speakers I followed easily and understood fully, while other lectures were completely over my head. I suggest more prerequisites in the corals subject for future students that will ensure success in the class. Also, much of the class was group work with rotating accountability but Cindy Hunter neglected to keep track of this rotation or who was attending the class so the group workload was often highly uneven.
Awesome class.
Very nice and excited for teaching what she loves, I would take this class again if I had the time!
Great class!

Very fun class, learned a lot about coral reef ecology
I would love for more classes to be taught without a textbook, instead, learning from mentors
Great job

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The technological issues plaguing the lab section have been a little distracting.
better communication
Become more familiar with the technology being used in the classroom
No need third hour to watch movies or to take quizzes. If needs to have technological problems addressed and solved before class.
One improvement would be to get the media in the recitation running on time.
Not so much the the teacher, it's just a matter of being a new set up and kinks being in the WI cycle between getting reviewed papers back on time/turning the revised version in when getting the reviewed copy later. This was taken care of at the end of the course, which I am sure many people that fell behind due to their reviewers appreciated.
The way Laulima and the syllabus were set up was very confusing. The WI section could've been organized to be much more clear.
Continue doing what she is doing.
Work on being prepared for discussion classes. Some classes were spent trying to figure out how to set up the projector or computers and a lot of class time was wasted.

I really enjoyed the naturalist drawing exercise
I really enjoyed the 2 optional field trips. I also liked how the course was very broad and covered a lot of different fields of study like geology, botany, zoology, biology, etc.
make the exams more relevant
The classroom for recitation
I enjoyed some of the guest lecturers
All the different guest speakers and the different topics covered.
Different lecturers lecturing their area of expertise.
I enjoyed the guest speakers and the presentations
I loved all the guess lecturers
That it consisted of guest lecturers. It was a nice change of pace compared to other courses.
Interesting broad spectrum of material.
Guest speakers, Professor Amned & Professor Hunter were entertaining and informative with the material. Really learned about a lot of the zoology of the origin of the Hawaiian Islands.
I enjoyed listening to different speakers and learning about the field they worked in.

I think it is great that everything in this course pertains to living in Hawaii. Everything we learn is useful to me because I have lived here my whole life, and this class taught me many things I never knew before.
They should switch up lecture once in a while not just being lectured at every single class with boring power points.
Great professor and great class!
Course was fun!!!
Overall I enjoyed the class and would recommend it to other students, however, I felt the discussion classes were a waste of time. In most of the meetings we had to sit and wait for the teacher to figure out how to use the computer and projector, but by the time it was set up class was over.

More pictures in powerpoints.
Have the guest lectures that have similar topics be back to back so we can grasp the concept better, also some lectures put false info on their slides causing confusion for quizzes.

It was unfortunate that our class setting got changed several times; I understand that this was outside of Dr. Hunter's immediate control, but it was definitely disruptive.
Emphasize important points in the discussion section
there was not enough in class help with the final project.
Not much besides making sure all lecture slides are available online for review (most of them were readily available right after class ended). I also ordered the wrong book because MyUH listed the wrong book under required materials.

The guest lecturers.
All the lectures were very interesting and because they were done by different professors it was very motivating to go to class.
Multiple guest lecturers, vast amount of interesting material.
The quizzes
The lectures on animals were by far my favorite, they were amazing to listen to and know more about.
All of the guest lecturers.
Guest lectures were consistently awesome!
I like how the course is organized--how there are guest lectures every week.
The range of knowledge
I liked the lectures. Most of them were very interesting, because of the content from guest lecturers who specialized in diverse topics of Hawaii's ecology, as well as Dr. Hunter and Dr. Amend. This was one of my favorite classes at UH
The discussion sections helped a lot when it comes to more intimate interaction with the professor as well as fellow students, especially since lecture classes are big. Lectures from various professionals and academics make the content interesting.
recitation section was awesome
That I learned about Monk seals.

He is a good teacher because he is knowledgeable in Botany and very to approachable. My advice for course is to not call it BOT/ZOO. I really didn't feel like the subject went into depth with the animal faunas. It lightly touched on the animals. The lectures, unfortunately, were somewhat repetitive due to different instructors coming in to teach and not communicating with each other.

6. What did you like best about the course?
Being able to go out in the field and actually put knowledge to work, as well as observing the goings on at Coconut Island. The guest speakers were also quite informative.
The fieldwork.
I enjoyed being able to be in the driver's seat and take control of my own education. I truly got out of this course exactly what I put into it, and that was refreshing.
I enjoyed getting to experience making our own project and completing a project from start to finish. And being out on the water every day.
Being out on the boats and exploring the Bay
Being able to work in small groups and create a project based on an area which you find interesting. Also being out on the field collecting the data and forming as a team.
Opportunity to go out into the field and collect samples for our own experiment was important to me because it served as representation for future research I might do.
I think it was an extremely valuable course and I learned a lot in a very short amount of time. It was a good introduction into the process of doing marine biology research. I wish the course would have been a week longer so we would've had more time to collect data and learn GIS. I had a lot of fun and this class will help me with grad school and my whole career.
hands on experience of research application
I really enjoyed going out on the boats and into the water. Whether we were collecting data, or just exploring, it was always refreshing and fun, regardless of the weather, tide, or amount of work to be done. Staying on the island in the classroom and staring at computer screens all day was not as enjoyable. Being able to explore the Bay and see all the magnificent organisms that reside here was truly a life changing experience. In future years, perhaps it might be good to allow students more time in the water just for fun. Another thing I enjoyed was the time spent with classmates. Due to the living situation, I have been able to create many long-lasting friendships and being surrounded by them definitely helped to keep me relaxed. Whenever someone is upset or stressed, there is always an ear to listen, another shoulder to lean on.
The course broadened my experience in field techniques
The flexibility of her schedule
I liked the first-hand, in the field experience and the fact that it wasn't just lectures and readings.
I enjoyed the field work the most.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The ArcGIS portion, as well as the need to solve field problems on the spot and work with group members after long days.
Having to think on my feet all the time in order to fix the multiple problems that we faced.
This course really gave a glimpse into the world of field research. With guest speakers coming in frequently, it was nice to explore the different types of work that are happening in the field of Marine Biology research.
Learning ArcGIS and boating.
ArcGIS was a really great tool to learn how to use to represent our data in a new way. I also really liked learning all the boating stuff.
I improved my writing skills and was able to help lead a team into creating a whole project. Whilst improving old skills and creating new ones.
Most helpful about the course was our GIS portion. It seemed like a skill that I can build on and use in my professional career.
I thought learning GIS and being able to design and carry out an entire experiment was extremely helpful and I developed a lot of skills that I will maintain throughout the rest of my career.
applicable
The surplus of information provided by both instructors, the T.A.'s, the guest lecturers, and my peers was the most valuable aspect of this course, in my opinion. I was able to learn something from each person I encountered during the course of this month. Whether about the research project itself, or something small, it was always reassuring to know that all questions would be answered somehow by someone, and that there was always someone to seek out when something was unsure. I never felt alone or lost for longer than a few minutes. Having T.A.'s who have recent experience with this class was extremely helpful because they could relate to the experiences we were going through, and gave really insightful advice on everything, from living situations to research methods. Having them there to lead us on the right path when the instructors were not enough was so reassuring.
Boating experience Field experience ArcGIS Developing teamwork skills/leadership skills Writing skills Presentation skills Developing relationships with future colleagues
Working with people.
I found the real-life experience of field work valuable, the skill development of working in a group to accomplish a task.
I liked that we came up with our own research question and survey methods to answer that question. It was less directed than I would have expected but that just forced us to really think creatively about solutions.

26. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Organization for one, of schedules and assignments. Changing due dates and leaving us in the dark as to what is expected of us is pretty unreasonable. Also setting a better example for students. Reef and student safety did not seem to be a high priority for her at all. It needs to be clearly stated at the beginning that the point of the course is to try many different methods available in marine biology.
Better organization of the course so as to preempt future mistakes from happening.
Be more straight-forward. Often times, questions were asked and multiple different answers were received. Be sure that all necessary materials are available to students with ample time to make sufficient use of them. Developed an improved understanding of how much is really being asked of the students and how much time is available. If sufficient sleep is necessary for a day in the field, that needs to be a realistically obtainable thing, not requiring students to be up late working on several homework assignments at once. In feedback (especially on summaries) be more explicit about what is expected. Many students struggled to understand how exactly they could improve, and grading was not felt to be fair and impartial for each and every student.
Unorganized, needs more structure and direction. Created a lot of stress among students. Would have liked more time discussing our projects with the instructors. Needs a router specifically for this class, the internet situation was terrible. Needs more thorough feedback on papers. "No." is NOT good feedback. $50 dollars a week for food was too much, I think $30 is more reasonable.
Have field notes all be online submissions, have each group do their own separate report, and provide more information to students about logistics with moving on island and things like that before the first day of class. Also, provide more constructive criticism with writing assignment feedback, because question marks in track changes doesn't mean anything to students and doesn't help us fix our writing.
To remember who is doing what and at what time, so that everyone can be prepared the night before. Also group meetings would help further get her and the groups ideas across.
It would be nice if Dr. Hunter could have applied her years of experience in research to help us in our own research projects. She didn't really have any specific feedback on field methods or even if our reports were good or bad. She remained very generic and general with her feedback.
The feedback that we received on our reading summaries was frequently unclear and unhelpful. There were often just question marks given as comments and I didn't really know what that meant. Sometimes the workload was pretty overwhelming with the daily logs, the reading summaries, field work, and everything we had going on. The daily logs were a cool idea at first, but by the middle of the class the novelty had worn off and it was just monotonous. The data collection and ArcGIS was kind of the same thing every day so it was hard to write about it. I felt like the class was very disorganized. I know that the whole point of the class was for us to be in charge of our own projects, but we could have used more direction. Sometimes I felt like it was useless to even submit a proposal in the first place when we had to fight every day to collect our data in the way that we specified in the proposal. I was also frustrated when we had been collecting data a certain way for a few days and then we were told we had been doing it wrong. That happened multiple times and it just made the class so much more frustrating because we weren't sure what we were doing so we would ask for help, get told it was fine, and then get corrected after the fact. Combining the papers at the end of the class after doing everything separately caused a lot of headaches and stress that would have been eliminated if everything had been combined from the start.
apply the research to projects already in motion so as to offer more direction in real life situations
Dr. Hunter was not always prepared for the class, and often put her students under a lot of stress, and sometimes danger. There were many times when students asked her for specific equipment for field work and she would respond with, "I have given you *said equipment* and you're just not looking hard enough." Due to this unpreparedness of the class and lack of trust, students were deprived of necessary equipment for nearly 2 weeks - which hindered the research project entirely. She also showed clear favoritism to one of the two groups, which left the non-favored group at a large disadvantage. Dr. Hunter overall needs to be more concerned with the students' safety, both mentally and physically. Many of the comments made on summaries and papers were not helpful and made it obvious that she does not carefully read what the students write. Dr. Hunter also made many empty promises to her students, which, again, left her students out in the dark during a majority of the month. Whether it was, "we have a lot of money for this class, we can get it for you," or "we will send you the protocol right away," we were promised many things that never happened. The due dates/times and the number of assignments were also extremely unreasonable. There were several times where students felt overwhelmed with the amount of work needed to be done. Dr. Hunter should also seriously consider allowing each group to submit their own paper, instead of combining the two groups (survey and spatial) together at the end. It is illogical to have the groups write an entire paper separately for the entire month, only to combine the papers at the very end with little time to edit.
Give correct information No favoritism Don't be condescending
Give more time in the course..
Give students more options as far as projects (and species) go. Being constrained to two species felt somewhat limiting.
Dr.Hunter could have been more knowledgeable about survey methods beforehand to lessen the amount of mistakes made in the field.
27. Any comments about the TA?
They were great, it would have been nice to have more one on one time but I realize they are quite busy with their own research.
Knowledgeable about the class from beforehand and helped prevent us from making mistakes. Also had good knowledge of the area being surveyed.
TA's were all fantastic! So friendly and relatable, being that they'd already gone through the course. The help received from the TA's really helped to shape the course, as well as the final projects submitted. Huge thank you's to Keisha, Ryan, and Lauren!
The TAs were very helpful and provided a lot of information. However we should not be feeding the TAs with the food we purchased every day on the boats.
Keisha was awesome! She went out of her way to make herself available to students and always had a positive attitude. She tried her best to make things fun for us, and gave really helpful advice and suggestions on how to deal with just about every problem that came up in the field, and among students.
The TA's were helpful and fun. If we needed help when they weren't on island we could easily call or text and would be available to provide information. They gave us insight on past years which helped formulate our projects.
Keisha Rodriguez was a great TA, she provided power points to helps us, was available to answer questions, and gave great advice. She was always positive and just wanted to get us to produce the best work. Lauren Van Heukelem and Ryan Logan provided us great food and transportation and offered helpful advice as past BIOL 403 students. They made sure we were on track.
I thought all of the TAs were fantastic. They were excellent boat drivers and were always helpful when we asked. I know we asked a lot from them and I don't think any of us expected everyone to put as much extra time into the class as they did, but I am extremely grateful that they did. I wish they would've gotten paid more for all their trouble!
Keisha was a wonderful T.A. and fulfilled all expectations completely. Although she was extremely nice and laid-back, she was also very strict and stern when necessary, which was good to keep the students on the right path. Her experiences from taking the class in 2011, and overall knowledge of marine biology, was extremely helpful. Having more than one T.A. for 14 students was a smart maneuver. She, Lauren, and Ryan were more than helpful to our entire situation and experience. Whenever we could not communicate well with Dr. Hunter, or whenever we just needed to vent out steam, the T.A.'s were always there to listen and give advice. They also spoke to Dr. Hunter for us when they felt they would be more successful getting through to her. Having the T.A.'s around not only made the entire experience go by a lot smoother, they also made working every day more fun. The three T.A.'s together were a perfect combination of help, fun, experience, and advice.
TAs were knowledgeable, helpful and approachable
TAs were very helpful in branching any communication errors or misunderstandings...although sometimes a little biased in opinion. Very fun, none-the-less...
The TAs for this course were very helpful, prompt, easy-going, and knowledgeable. You could really tell that they cared about the progress of the class and the well-being of the students. I really appreciated their input and feel that they were valuable aspects to the class experience as a whole.
The TAs were all helpful!

33. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The field work and observation days.
Being able to work out in the field as a team and actually collect "real" data instead of "staged" experiments and results in classroom-only labs.
I enjoyed field work, and being able to discuss field problems/plans out loud with a panel of peers, TA's, and professors in the morning. These conversations really aided field work.
I enjoyed going out in the water everyday and working on the project in a group setting.
Definitely being out on the boats, and learning to use ArcGIS.
Being out on the water collecting our own data for our research.
I found the guest lectures interesting and provided a broader scope of research areas than our species of concern.
illustrated real research problems to work around
Again, I really enjoyed being able to go out into the water and spending time with my peers.
Gaining field and boat experience
Being on the boat and being in the field. Living on site with the research center. Although...more time off (weekend) may have been appreiciated.
I liked working out in the field and collecting data for a personally designed project the best.
I enjoyed the field work the most and seeing what our results would say. I don't like to write much, but I do appreciate the emphasis on keeping my writing concise through weekly assignments.

35. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Quite good. I kept my GPA up my entire undergraduate career in order to take this course and it was fun and informative.
The overall goal of the course (field research experience) was met, but the class needs to be better organized with clearer communication between the instructor and the students.
Course was fun and helpful, although a bit unorganized. While it was nice that students were more able to have control over their own work, it's also important that students don't feel that they are contributing more, or possibly even more knowlegable than the professor.
Has a lot of room for improvement but is a very valuable class to take.
An excellent course that just needs some refinement. More flexibility with making adequate materials available to students would be much appreciated, as well as more information about logistics beforehand. Despite all the craziness with planning under the circumstances, it was a really fun class. My favorite course that I have taken so far at UH.
Excellent course, makes you work harder and as a team. Although there are minor glitches throughout, with boat problems, group problems, storms. It was a fun class where I was also able to improve my writing and research skills which will help me in the future.
Good. But could be much much better if had more extensive structure and planning. For instance, if we were aware of where and what equipment was available to us instead of boxes with things people thought was in there. Or if the schedule was less Or if the internet, which was crucial to the entire course, was consistently working.
good. The class was split up so focusing on the same areas with the same tasks daily can become monotonous and can take the energy out of the group
This class has both extreme positives and extreme negatives. As for positives, this class has allowed students to have hands on field experiences that are not always available. Students also build many skills such as communication, leadership, and writing. Students learned boating safety, received their boating licenses, installed ArcGIS to their personal computers, learned how to use ArcGIS, and expanded their knowledge on two species of concern which are unknown to most people. In these ways, students were exposed to many experiences that will be helpful in the future. However, I feel that the negatives outweigh the positives. This class was clearly not planned out in advanced, and it was truly hard to believe that this is the 10th anniversary of BIOL 403. Students were not exposed to any of the logistics or information about the course until the first day. It would have been nice to have a little more than 24 hours to pack and prepare to live on Coconut Island for an entire month. The work was always overwhelming. In between getting up early to load the boats and make lunch, and guest lectures and GIS labs, and making dinner, and blogs, we also have summaries, daily logs, and several drafts we had to worry about. In this final week, many of us agree that we have very little time to work on our final product, which includes combining two perfectly separately written papers and a powerpoint presentation. We were also unable to use all the equipment which was necessary and all groups were unable to sufficiently conduct the proposed experiments. The instructors themselves also need a lot of work - they need to spend more time on the island with the students, and they need to DIRECT much more. Overall, this call is good with regards to experience, but when looked at a different scale, this class is unorganized, unprofessional, and ultimately not the best. Although I'm thankful to have been given the chance to experience this class, there is just too much I would change.
It is worth it.
I fully enjoyed the course for what it was. More communication would have been helpful. Getting in the field and practicing what you preach (teach) is very important in fully understanding all the dynmaics of this degree. This course is very important if one is to go into this career..little more more organization would help.
Excellent. I feel that this class has been one of the most valuable experiences I've had in my field of study (Marine Biology). I've learned many lessons that I otherwise would have not, and I have developed important life skills and teamwork abilities I would not have gained from being confined to a classroom.
It was a bit unorganized with the constant changing of the syllabus/schedule. There was also less "directed-research" than planned. But I feel it made me stronger as both a researcher and person. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and had a blast. I also learned a lot of valuable things.
36. Other comments:
I believe that there should be a change in the faculty assigned to be in charge of this course.
-none-
The BBQ for friends and family is a great idea, but it would be nice to do it on a day where it isnt right after a lab. Also, if we are paying all the money for the food, the TA's and TI's should have to bring their own lunches because those of us with minimum wage incomes can barely afford the food fee as it is. Also, if there is money leftover from the grocery shopping it should be returned to students evenly. The stipend is really nice, but don't take on as many students next class if you can't pay the students the same as previous years for the same amount of work. Also, in general, a more adult-like treatment of students could occur. At times it felt like we were being talked to and treated as kids. It is a learning environment and everyone's safety is paramount, but we aren't 13 and are able to be treated like young adults.
I really appreciate the effort of the teachers and the TAs.

MAST was truly a fantastic field course!!!! We learned and accomplished a tremendous amount in a short time, and we had a lot of fun doing it together as a team. It was an amazing opportunity and I'm am so thrilled to have been able to have been part of it. I have a much better appreciation of maritime archeology now, and the skills we learned will benefit us not only in studying underwater wrecks, but in any marine endeavors. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Be more specific about what we really need to know for exams. Knowing everything off hand is imposssible.
Sometimes there was not a good flow to the lectures presented, one guest lecturer would explain a certain topic and then the next lecture would be something very different.
alot of slides do not have any explanations on it. exams are hard to study for because slides usually do not contain alot of information and do not explain concepts well. her teaching style is also hard to follow. it seems like she talked alot and pointed at pictures alot so it was hard to follow along sometimes or to revisit slides.
Give study guides of what's expected in the course. Provide more "glue" about the content. A lot of jumping around here and there which makes it hard sometimes to get the whole picture.
Involve your students with as much field experience as possible. This is my biased opinion but I learn much better this way and it is more fun then traditional classroom learning.
I wish Dr. Hunter would have held review/study sessions whether during or outside of class or at least go over what we should study for exams because it was hard to determine what to study and studying everything for the exams were a little too much. I also wish Dr. Hunter would have made the exams worth more points. I felt 20pts didn't give much leeway
My only critique of the course would be to structure the hot topics differently. I understand why we have them and what Cindy would like us to gain from them, but I do not feel that gained what I should have from them. I did however enjoy working in small discussion groups.
More classes dedicated to tying together the lectures of the guest lecturers.
Having guest speakers is great as it definitely opens our eyes to current issues and research, however, this does limit our ability to assess the instructor him/herself. Also, some of the topics are so far in depth it's a bit challenging to wrap our minds around and makes the class overall seem a little disorganized as far as chronological order, etc.
Study or review sessions before exams would be helpful. I try to pick out important points from guest lectures but my ideas never seem to align with what shows up on the exam. Even a brief summary of the most important points from guest lectures would be very helpful in helping me to prepare for exams. We cover a lot of material and when I'm studying, I feel like I'm just blindly memorizing without much idea what I should be focusing on the most.
She could better stress important material that students should know for exams and/or points that she feels is most important for students to know. She also has a lot of guest speakers and main points from each talk could be given to the class so that the students understand what her focus of the talk was.
I appreciated the Hot Topics and the idea of keeping up with current relevant literature. It would have been nice if we had just focused on one paper a week since often the readings were long and very involved and required a lot of work to digest. I also noticed that we often didn't get to or had to rush through the discussion of the paper in class and, personally, I felt like the discussion was the most helpful part. The Hot Topic groups were problematic for me because my group wouldn't read the Hot Topics and then would expect me to give them answers so it became a frustrating experience rather than an enjoyable one. They started reading more after we had to start turning in the Hot Topics so maybe making that the rule from the get-go would be helpful in the future.
Make things flow together better. It seemed like the presentations didn't flow together and we had to memorize a bunch of random info.

Made me look at corals in a dofferent way.
We got to meet a lot of the major contributers to coral reef science
not much
The instructor.
A lot of guest speakers that were in an expertise in their field shared their information with us about coral reefs. I thought this was an honor to meet really passionate and intellectual people.
Guest lecturers provided fresh information. Also, a professor that is passionate about teaching.
What I enjoyed most about this course was the guest lectures. Most other classes do not offer this wonderful opportunity, and I feel that as a science major it is vital to be kept in the know about research and developments in the field, especially from the researchers themselves. I also feel that it presented a kind of accessibility that students would not otherwise have.
A vast assortment of guest lecturers from all scientific fields pertaining to coral reefs, teaching us biology, chemistry, and political values.
audio/visuals of corals and coral reefs were great! Couldn't get enough =)
I really liked having guest lecturers. It kept the class from getting stagnant and boring. Even the most engaging lecturer can get dull from time to time. I actually enjoy that we are writing a proposal also, because it is a critical skill I'm going to need if I'm going to have a career in science and none of my other classes even touched on proposal writing.
I liked that there were different people who came to speak to the class because they are the experts in their specific fields and it was very refreshing to hear from people who are already working in the field. Dr. Hunter made the class very interesting and bettered my understanding of coral reef communities. I now understand their contributions to the Earth's ecosystem and why they are important in future generations.
I liked the many different lecturers - it kept the course fresh and interesting and exposed the class to a lot of different scientists working in the field. It was a neat experience and I appreciated all the coordinating and extra work it probably took.
Having the guest speakers talk was interesting.

So much information!
The class was not very interesting to me. I am a zoology major, but coral reefs are just not my thing. I have a solid A in the course, but it is definitely not my favorite class. Hunter is my favorite instructor this semester, but the course was boring.
would have been nice if we actully planned out a field trip to go snorkeling, so that we could try and identify different coral species as a class.
While I did enjoy having guest lecturers in the course, I felt like having a stronger presence from Dr. Hunter would have been useful. Maybe instead of doing Hot Topics every week, there could be a review day where Dr. Hunter pulls everything together. There wasn't a whole lot of cohesion in the material we were presented and sometimes it's difficult for me to get a sense for how it all fit together.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I believe C. Hunter is very easy to talk to and good at explaining things you may not understand. However, I think there is TOO much material covered in this course. Perhaps it should be split up into a part one and a part two.
None
Hard to tell what would be on exams, in the future a list of possible vocab words would be helpful
Answer questions asked by students and rely less on other students to answer them. Be more careful with language. Learn how to work the computer and videos that we watch in our discussions. She needs to be more patient with some students and not embarrass them in front of students l8ke me because it makes me very uncomfortable.
The course load is a lot to cover in between tests and everything is very broad in what you want from us. It's frustrating trying to study for the exam
The course needs more organization in terms of the recitation meet-up for the WI class. The lecture itself was nicely organized and should stay the way it is now.
Inform the class beforehand of the exam format. Maybe put an fake exam just to show what it would look like
Make self more available. More organization. There were so many folders on laulima that i was often clicking on 5 links before i reached where i was trying to go. But dr. Hunter was very open minded and engaged in dialogue with students. Shes very understanding of student needs.
So much material covered and at different depths, makes preparing for any exam challenging, but not impossible =).

Hawaiian Science
Guest lectures were awesome. Exams were straightforward but not challenging.
I liked that each presentation had new presenters and lecturers knowledgeable in that particular field. We got expert opinions/knowledge which was helpful and kept the class interesting.
New lecturers every class. More on native Hawaiian views would be nice.
good use of different teaching methods, such as videos, guest lectures, pictures, and discussions.
Visuals always contribute to the facilitation of understanding topics.
I liked learning about the Hawaiian Islands because it pertained to my experiences living in Hawaii.

I really enjoyed the guest lecturers. They were all wonderful!!
How to write a proposal
Good knowledge of research opportunities and other ways to get involved to get hands on experience. Provided me great information about active marine-related organizations and inspired me to to get involved.
Great course! Best thing was hearing from all sorts of professionals in the Marine field. It's great having a contact in all these various programs.
The guest speakers were awesome, however, it would have been nice to have had guest speakers that were long the lines of the classes interests as well.

Good professor and was comfortable to be around
I really enjoyed meeting her, she is a great person! Well-organized, professional, and very caring.
nice and trues to be helpful but because her requirements for an assignment are very broad and open, it's really hard to know if you're going in the right direction. Even her answers to your questions are still too general to really help you.
I was not at all impressed with this class. I was SO excited to take this course and it failed to meet any of my minimum expectations. I wish I had not taken the class.

A great kick-start to my learning experience at UH.
This was a very fun course, and the guest speakers were all great. It was really interesting to hear about all the different studies and jobs related to marine science!
It was alright. The course was very spread out. It was strange to work on one short paper the entire semester. Other than that, it was good to hear all the presentations and meet more people.
loved the course! Best course I had this semester. And it was great in developing professional skills and contacts. I wish I had taken it sooner.
Crap.
i liked going i learned about my field

The guest speakers were relevant and entertaining, the course was structured well and I enjoyed the group discussions. You can tell miss hunter knows the material and is enthusiastic about it but sometimes she does not convey the take home messages all that well.
I definitely felt like there was some favoritism, and at one point she called me out in front of the class for being five minutes late (not a usual thing for me) and told the class that translated into "not caring about my education". I do not have a marine biology background, and I felt this was a large detriment. I found the tests very difficult, and hard to study for. However, I can tell Dr. Hunter is enthusiastic about corals, and I did enjoy the lectures and readings.
The organization of the class wasn't the best. Perhaps it could be improved actually updating the syllabus of the class. It was also difficult because sometimes she would forget or leave out papers we would have to discuss.
It was a great experience to be ale to listen to the expertise of all the guest lecturers and it certainly was an experiment trying out this new class with no textbook. As an overview of corals and coral reefs, this class did an excellent job, however it would have been nice to specify and look at, for example, the ecology of coral reefs for the entire class.
She is very passionate about her work. This is shown through her lectures.
-Educational goals were not clear. -Suggested study material didn't correlate well with what we were tested on. -Slides often not posted for review -If you are concerned with attendance, then take roll (give incentive for students to go) -Dr. Hunter didn't seem eager to help students -Class needs serious improvements
I love love love that she brought in guest speakers, it was more than what I expect of most classes. It gave a behind the scenes tour type of feel to the coral reef class and gave students a broader vision of the science behind coral reefs and the range of opportunities to study in the coral reef field.
I dont feel like you actually taught us much. The guest lecturers were great, but it would have helped if you actually took time to help us make connections (instead of just raving about how wonderful each person was). Sometimes I feel that I would do better on the exams if the questions were about which guest lecturer you were friends with the longest or your trips to Samoa or how many times you accidentally wrecked someones boat on a reef when you were in school. While those stories were interesting, I think it would have been better if you included actual lessons on the material. The guest lecturers don't have a lot of time so they go through what is sometimes very complex material way too fast, and since you only put a few of the lectures on line (still not sure why some are posted and others aren't) we are all trying to scribble notes and cant absorb anything. If you took a day to review what we heard and help us make connections I think I would have gained A LOT more out of the course.
intimidating at first but the professor really grew on me. professor hunter was very open to questions and responded very promptly. kept very close to the given schedule and very clear on what she expected. the amount of guest speakers she scheduled to lecture us and the body of work they all accomplished was stunning, genuinely appreciated her taking the time to schedule everyone throughout the semester. i am not going in to coral reef biology in the future and was very unfamiliar with the subject coming in but i have developed quite a deep respect for it because of this class. professor hunter is an enthusiastic, super qualified instructor and there's nothing she asked of her students which was unreasonable. if anything, i hope she doesn't have to schedule all of these speakers again. i imagine it'd be a nightmare to do this twice a year.
By far one of the best professors I've ever had at UH. Especially for taking on a course she has never taught before, she did a phenomenal job.
Dr. Hunter may have struggled to pull this course together, but definitely put in the effort. Wish there was more an emphasis on specific physiology/taxonomy
This class was mostly taught by guest professors. The content was very interesting but the actual instructor only taught a handful of the classes. This caused the teaching style to vary greatly obviously and what is worse is that each guest lecturer had a powerpoint presentation which was not uploaded online. The exams covered the material presented by the guest lecturer without them being available to answer questions or without the presentations themselves. This made things very difficult when they didn't need to be!
Very impressive array of speakers brought to the class. Overall Professor Hunter was very knowledgeable about the Academia of coral research. As a professor she was encouraging of future research and also approachable for questions. My only comment would be that less comments be made when others did not show up for class as those who came couldn't help the choices of others. I would definitely recommend the class.
I didn't learn very much from Hot Topics. I wish we could just have a lecture-based discussion instead. If you chose to do Hot Topics again, at least let the groups switch around once in a while.

The midterm was a little odd in the wording and selection of options for answers.
I really like this course and the teachers are really kind and easy to talk to.
abysmal lecturer. dead boring, defensive/aggressive, condescending, nervous. shrill voice, unpleasant to listen to. often didn't seem to know what she was talking about (except coral). tacky powerpoint presentations, can't believe a 'professor' made them. sloppy layout and distracting backgrounds. a very unpleasant person. always wore the same shirts. unprofessional--what kind of 'professor' says the word 'jism' in class when referring to coral reproductive fluids? can't believe she has a job here. i have zero respect for her. the other professor she shared the class with was the exact opposite--relaxed, confident, fun and interesting lectures. wish he'd taught the whole class.
thank you for teaching this course!
I appreciate her passion for the subject matter and taking the time to organize good field trips for the class.
Awesome course. I really enjoyed the variety of lecturers and lecture topics. I did have trouble with some of the short films during the recitation segments, they were really difficult to hear which was frustrating since we were tested on the material.
Professor Hunter is an amazing teacher and mentor. Her presentations were interesting and innovative. I can only hope to be as amazing as she is some day. I learned so much through this course, and Cyndy made that experience that much better!
This course was very interesting and covered a wide range of topics relating to the natural history of the Hawaiian islands. I enjoyed learning more about my home!
I wish there were more points available to buffer poor exams. I do not feel that the exam was a good example of the knowledge that I have gained from the course.
It was great to have guest lecturers come in who are knowledgeable about there topics. However it does make it harder to get used to one persons teaching style.
The combination of lab and guest speakers really kept the class interesting. The guest speakers were especially good because they were experts in their respective fields.
i would have liked the midterm and final be split up into 3 or 4 exams throughout the semester. the range of vocabulary words and topics is a little overwhelming
work load for this lecture class was excessive, felt they tried to cram too much info in too short a time, in turn, I feel that I didn't come away with much knowledge in the field,
I really enjoyed this course, and believe it should be taken by all natural science students. It would be nice if we could use this lecture to fulfill our Hawaiian studies requirement.
Great Professor. I know she said repeatedly that she was nervous at times, but I think she and Dr. Morden did an excellent job. I do think that they could have warned us about the specifics of the exam however. I was expecting concepts, but instead I had to know specific vocab terms and people linked to certain events. It was a lot of info, and could raise grades if they tell students in the future to know this stuff. Other than that I had a lot of fun learning about all the new concepts and events happening on the islands and island chain.
The test are very hard and was very unprepared for it. It was nothing like the weekly quizzes that I thought they would be like

19. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Her first few lectures were a bit bumpy and while she acknowledged it, and said she had not taught the class in a while, she seemed almost over apologetic.
This comment is not directed to Dr. Hunter but to the course as a whole. As a graduate student I felt that material could have been a more difficult than how it was presented. Even if I was an undergraduate, I dont feel that the concepts of the course were difficult to follow and understand. If a more critical approach was taken I feel it would lead to students leaving earning their grade and a more thorough understanding of the material.
I'm glad we had such knowledgable guest lecturers they really helped keep the material interesting
The only thing I didn't like was the day that she didn't have enough quizzes, the individuals who didn't receive a quiz automatically got an A on it, which is unfair to us who actually had to take it.
The test questions need to be more broad. With so much information being thrown at us by different professionals its hard to adequately study on the most important of topics.
Prof. Hunter's presentations could improve. I'm not sure if its just me but it seems as though she was nervous or not prepared. Her presentations sounded disconnected and it didn't flow well. This made it harder to understand important concepts. The information on the slides were good just how she presented could use some improvement.
For a WI class, we only need 16 pages. We had to do 10 summaries and a 10 page paper, which is 20 pages of writing. I feel that we should not have had to do that much.

The Hawaiian stuff :)
The guest speakers who are specialists in their field I thought helped keep the class from being monotonous and more like a university experience should be. The best information from the field experts.
The multiple guest lecturers who are leaders in their fields. The syallabus made the course easy to follow the instructions were clear.
I liked how passionate each lecturer was about their field of study
I like the resources for the course. All the information was placed on a site for us to view and download powerpoints. I especially liked all the guest speakers that lectured us.
All the variety of speakers, and aspects of hawaiian natural history that was covered
I liked having different professionals coming in to talk to us their specialized fields. Adds a different perspective to whats going on in different topics.
I found it really helpful having the powerpoints available before lecture.
I enjoyed the diversity of topics covered in this class. I especially enjoyed the field trips.
i liked the guest speakers and how the course was organized like that. It showed me how many different paths we as students can take.

I wish the exams were broken down into more parts rather than just a midterm and final. It's a lot of information and I'm really dreading the cumulative final....
overview of what would be on the final would be helpful because there was so much material that was covered :)
The tests were difficult. It was very hard to know what to study given the amount of material presented. the exam did not reflect the weekly quizzes and i feel a study guide should have been given.

26. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Going out in the field everyday to experience what doing research really feels like. You really get to see if laying out transects and doing percent cover all day every day is what you want to do in the future. Hands on experience is essential in this field in order to see if you are cut out for it. I also loved the speakers in the evenings. They really inspired me personally. I liked the fair amounts of down time given certain weeks of the course to allow for the experience to be taken advantage of. I liked the trust given to us and feel as though I respected that trust.
