13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
that she is a great teacher who shows that she cares about her students. She gives tons of great feedback on assignments. She is willing to work with you if you have scheduling conflicts and is just the right amount of lenient. She is strict with certain things and will not let you BS your way through the class, but is also lenient with things if it is practical to do so. She encourages thought and asks good questions that aren't confusing.
Very knowledgable about the course but hard to talk to
She is a very knowledgeable professor. She encouraged thought and assigned really good reading content. I enjoyed the conversation and questions that provoked good discussion. As a professor, she is very keen to the relevancy of topics and how they continue to impact our community.
Overall the class was fun but educational, in class discussions forced students to pay attention during class and helped with understanding course material. One of the best classes that I have taken at Manos, I learned a lot and actually enjoyed going to class each day to learn. The teacher was very professional.
I found this class to be very interesting and I learned a lot about the various movements which inspired me to do further research.
She is very enthusiastic about the course but I feel like I can't ask her any questions because she doesn't really have background knowledge on the course material. I find that when others ask her about simple things like what year a piece was written, she usually says she's unsure. Her knowledge seems to be restricted strictly to the course material.
A great instructor, that goes out of her way to help students in need. not many teachers like her would raise attention that they need help and that she is wiling to sacrifice time to help them succeed
good professor

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Learning details about movements that I was uneducated in.
I liked the videos the most they were very helpful
I enjoyed the certain readings, discussion, and facilitation in groups. This allowed each student to actively participate and engage with the course material.
The best part of the course was the in class discussions because it encouraged students to get involved in the topics.
I actually really enjoyed the class discussions and the presentations
The facilitations, and the films.
the course gave me a new perspective on how the world is viewed and how you must dig deep to find the meanings behind everything
though of writing intensive is broken down into small assignments
The discussion
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The fact that the class was at 7:30AM really is a problem. In a class where you should be engaged and have a proper functioning mind, it is extremely hard to do so with a class this early. Students who are very serious about school as well as their employment are often up until 2AM working on assignments for other classes. Waking up at 6AM is okay for classes where all you do is take notes but it just doesn't work for this kind of class. I could see it on the faces of almost every person toward the second half of the semester. I know everyone complains about this, 7:30AM classes, but it truly is a problem.
I didn't like the facilitations and final project.
I didn't like when the class was not engaged. It was hard when only two people would actually provide valuable input and others would just agree. I also did not enjoy the readings on the Hawaiian movement because I felt that it was irrelevant to me and very biased.
I generally liked everything about the course and I would not change anything about the course.
I'm typically a shy person so the final project which required us to volunteer and interview was difficult for me but once completed it was very rewarding
the fact that it was a 7:30 am course otherwise it was great
assignmentsthe final presentation and a essay on top of it
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Great course, I learned a lot and had fun discussing the social movements.
Eye opening and very interesting
I liked the historical portions of the course and the diversity of the content for the readings and movements. The paper assignments were not overwhelming and very thought provoking.
I liked it!
Very educational.
it was a fun and interesting course and would recommend to others
good class overall

You did facilitate discussion, but I there are some people you should have stopped from talking so others can talk. I also feel like you should have given more response time for people instead of continuing to change the question and re-ask it.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Very good, always trying to get discussion going and to get us to form ideas.
Her teaching skills were very great and she created a very open environment where if we did have something to say we could say it even if it was a question about the discussion. She is very enthusiastic about the course and cares about the students ideas.
She was an excellent teacher.
Overall well done course.
Very good teacher. Encouraged people to display their opinions and kept the environment very relaxed to speak in yet very professional as the topics and things we talked about could be controversial. Very personable and easy to talk to.
Prepared and knowledgable
A good instructor for this course. Has a relatively good grasp on the material she covers in the course, and does so enthusiastically.
That she is a very good teacher and willing to help students when they need.
Good class, but the discussion part and mostly motivation was lacking.
Stacy Nojima was awesome this semester. Very good teacher.
good teacher
She is very professional and knowledgeable! She speaks very intellectually and I really enjoy receiving feedback / editing from her on my papers because her words promote growth in my writing style. I'd definitely recommend her to everyone because she really does care about her students and their academic performance!

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the reading and discussion, volunteering was a cool aspect as well.
I liked the social movements that we learned about, especially the ones that I didn't know of.
I like the asian-American movement.
Discussions.
Speaking in class discussions I feel were great with a small class size. I'm usually on the shyer side but Stacy is very welcoming and encouraging.
The class discussions and content
I thought the writing workshops were really helpful.
I liked the facilitation the best.
In depth look at the different movements throughout American history was very interesting.
The documentary and films showed in class.
discussions
The readings were very interesting. I learned a lot of different topics in regards to social movements and the assignments were easy.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
All assignments being typed, although I understand some of the reasoning.
The very lengthy readings
N/A
Volunteering.
--
having to print one sentence discussion questions
The aspect of the course I liked the least was volunteering.
Discussion question assignments although easy, were useless.
I'm not much of a reader.
some readings
The non-participation from my classmates were annoying because it seems like everyone either 1) didn't do the assigned readings and didn't want to answer questions / discuss the readings and 2) were shy or had a fear of sounding dumb. I felt sorry for Stacy because nobody would participate and she would have to call on people to participate. It's definitely not her fault that nobody wanted to participate, it's simply my classmates.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very interesting, it broadened my view of our society.
A very interesting course that offered up a lot of knowledge. Plus, the professor was hot
This course definitely gave me a lot of knowledge about life and society. I know it sounds a bit cliche, but this class really made a great impact on me.
It was a course that I learned a lot.
Very good for people of all grades.
Excellent course, especially with this teacher.
interesting
That there is a lot of work but that it is manageable if you stay on top of things.
I would recommend this class to a friend for a WI credit. Stacy knows the content very well and I learned a lot.
This course was very good and I enjoyed going to class.
interesting course worth taking!!
This course is definitely worth taking because it not only fulfills the WI requirement, but because Stacy is a great instructor! I always looked forward to going to class because she makes a boring subject interesting with her exuberance!
18. Other comments:
Good.
3 books is alot for a single elective class and having to print every discussion question was annoying
I liked having Stacy as my teacher.
Awesome course and FANTASTIC instructor / person! Definitely recommend taking this course!!!

Very nice professor!
She is a really nice person and open to any questions or comments I have on particular assignments.
Definitely a morning person. Enthusiastic about the subject and love her passion. I just the class shared the same enthusiasm.
Great Professor! She brought out the best in American Studies 201. I learned a lot while being in this course which is the objective for every course. Mission accomplished.
Great class! Most of the important topics were put up for discussion among the students, so everyone had a chance to input their own ideas/opinions on the subject at hand.
Great instructor, very encouraging and motivational towards students, and very knowledgeable of course material!
She was really enthusiastic in teaching us, and really knew what she was talking about. She was easy to talk to and ask for help when we needed it.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Movements in the US
The discussions.
The in-class discussions.
I like that the class was guided by Prof. Nojima, and not a class with a rigid outline.
I like the class discussions, Stacy really encouraged class discussions to make sure we were keeping up with the readings, and allowing everyone to voice their opinions or viewpoints about the various social movements!
I liked our final project assignment in choosing to volunteer at an organization and connecting it to a activist movement.
encourage critical thinking and become more analytical than choosing one simple answer
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Reading many materials to discuss.
Having to read every night.
The tonnes of reading assignments
n/a
Assignments were a heavy load! Although this was a writing intensive class I felt that it was also a heavily reading intensive class! A lot of material was covered in this class! I definitely learned a lot!
Some readings were really boring
i can't find anything that I didn't like in this class. Even there it is a writing intensive, Ms. Nojima made it very interesting and wanting to learn. This includes reading materials. I typically get overwhelmed with many readings but the choices were great.
Lots of reading which was very time consuming Final project community aspect was difficult to find and carry out
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This course was very interesting to leann about many movements happened in the US
Repetitive, but fun!
great course, especially for an intro level course. Broad enough to get though lots of American social movements, but in-depth enough to learn something
Excellent course, amazing instructor, and a lot of reading and writing!
I really liked it overall and thought everything was very interesting.
Excellent. recommend this class to everyone. Even taking it as a WI requirement, by end of semester, you will be more knowledgeable of topics covered.

Had a lot of knowledge on subjects and topics. Asked stimulating questions that encouraged critical thinking. very approachable, wanted everyone to succeed in course.
Great teacher!
Very encouraging teacher. Always encourages everyone to contribute to the conversation. Very knowledgeable and one of the best teachers I've had.
Stacy is one of the best teachers I have had at the university. She is relatable and willing to help students at all times. She has an extensive knowledge of the subject she is teaching and conveys her message well.
Very professional, organized, and knowledgeable instructor. Professor Stacy Nojima is the ideal college professor. She is very passionate about her subject and her students.
I really like her as a teacher. She's fun, engaging, and really helps us out. I also like the fact that she's always there for her students, and tries to help them and accommodate them as much as possible.
She is approachable and well-versed in her field. I believe that she made a good impression on me and my overall experience with her was worthwhile.
Good teacher.
Good teacher but pretty strict when it comes to grading...
I really enjoyed her class. She was very passionate about the course and was not judgmental at all. She was kind and friendly, easy to ask for help and wanted everyone in the course to participate in class activities. Class was never boring and I hope I can take a class with her again in the near future.
Overall great professor, easy to talk to and very sincere.
a nice instructor whose main concern is getting students active in the community and in the subject matter.
Well-organized professor who has a lot of knowledge about the subject and that kept me interested the entire semester.
She is a great teacher definetly one of my favorite classes I have taken at UH.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Learning about all the social movements and institutions. Reading excerpts from different articles and books. it was really stimulating to read about the truth and history of America that they do not teach you in high school and middle school.
Class- discussion
The discussion. She created an environment in the beginning of the term that made it very comfortable for an open discussion.
The discussion aspect. Although some of the discussions were slow, it helped to be comfortable with the class and hear different opinions others had.
I really enjoyed doing the passage analysis essay. It made me think more critically while I read. I also appreciated the detailed syllabus that she provided for us. It kept us on track and responsible for our own learning.
I like the fact that the class was discussion based. I appreciated that. It was a very fun way to learn. I also like the fact that there was no final exam. It makes things kinda easier, though, the final paper and presentation counts in its stead. I also liked the fact that the assignments were varied, because it kept things interesting. It wasn't just writing analysis papers all the time. I will say though, that it was hard to get the gist of the assignments at the beginning, because I didn't know what the teacher wanted for some of the assignments. Essentially, I went into it blind. In addition, while I enjoyed the mock trial near the beginning of the semester, I think that it was kinda rushed, especially considering that people were playing for extra credit points. At the beginning of the semester, it's a little hard to make friends because everyone's still awkward with each other. I'd recommend that maybe the mock trial should go later so that the students have time to get to know each other.
Class discussions
Learning about history from the side of minorities.
The movements were interesting. I liked the videos.
The discussions in class. Class was not just the teacher in the front doing a lecture. It involved everyones ideas and opinions. It was very interesting and stimulating.
Reading materials including the Civil Rights Movement and Berkley Free Speech Movement, I also like the volunteer project that we were assigned.
Presentations
Engaging in group discussions, final project, the readers.
Class Discussions of reading was my favorite part of the class.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
A lot of the readings were extensive, somewhat boring and hard to read.
none
The work wasn't really spread out through the whole term. A lot of work was in the latter part of the term.
There was a lot of reading, but to be honest that wasn't really a big deal. I enjoyed this class thoroughly.
I understand that in order to have a fruitful discussion, we should all have read the same thing to form our own opinions on it. However, I do not feel like it was necessary to have 4 different readings, especially if they are long and we only get to touch upon the main ideas.
I'm still not a fan of the final project. I think that there should be alternatives offered to students that are either too busy, or if there's not much of a connection with the project they want to do and a social movement. I also think that a lot of the writing was squeezed into the middle part of the semester. I think that it could be spread out more because pretty much every class or so, there was some sort of writing assignment due. It'd be nice to spread the writing assignments out a little more, or cover certain movements more in-depth than others.
The midterm
All the reading.
I felt there was too much readings to do in a short amount of time. I feel that some Of the articles dragged on while others made their point quickly and well.
Nothing.
Some readings in the Labor Movements were long and boring
Facilitation.
N/A
Some of the readings were boring and made them difficult to read. Especially the UFW readings.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
great professor and great class. learned a lot and class discussions were stimulating.
Good
Excellent lower division WI course. I would highly recommend it.
I learned a lot about the history of the US. This course definitely surpassed my expectations of it. If I could, I would take this course again.
Very interesting and valuable course. Would recommend to a friend in need of a Writing Intensive.
Overall, I really liked this course. It was fun, interesting and in a different format compared to my other classes. The teacher is really nice and the material is interesting. I think that if the teacher continues to take feedback from her students, this class will only continue to get better and better.
It's a great course overall
Great and very interesting.
Okay but scary for people who are shy.
One of the best professors I ever had. I really enjoyed this class and recommend to anyone who needs a writing intensive course.
Great seminar
An average course but really teaches about the past social movements and issues surrounding them.
Worth taking and interesting if you want to learn something new that you probably never heard of before.
Great Course! I would take the next level class if there was one and if I could have the same teacher.
18. Other comments:
I would maybe add in more controversial topics to the course to create some diversity among the student. But overall very good course to take.
I would take any course Stacy offers and I know I would do well because she is an amazing teacher.
Thanks for being an awesome teacher, Ms. Nojima.
I would recommend this course to others

A great and enthusiastic professor. Well versed in American studies which made it easy to learn in her course. Encouraging and genuinely intelligent with newer modern teaching agenda that made every class interesting.
she is a wonderful professor. She knew the needs of the students and was able to challenge us all to break out of our shells and discuss out loud. Her understanding of the material and willingness to incorporate all of our ideas into the day's lessons made the class easy to relate to.
Great teacher who allows students to interact and teach the class
Nojima is one of the best American Studies professors I have had here at U.H. She is easy to talk to and always is willing to look out for the best interest of the class and her students.
She tried her best on encouraging group discussion but I think the class was too early so no one wanted to talk. I like how she incorporates recent events to our readings in class.
Great teacher. I enjoyed the course material.
She was easy to talk to but didn't communicate in the best way, in terms of assignments.
she is a good teacher and really tries to get the students interested.
She is a fantastic teacher!
Fun and influential
na

The class discussions and open ended conversations.
The Hawaii readings and some readings were intresting
I liked how the course linked aspects of real world art and modern media to what we had discussed in class.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Some lengthy readings
When readings become cumbersome and repetitive
Some of the readings were rather long and confusing
Some of the readings tended to be long and distracted me from the point of the class.
I didn't like some of the readings just because some were boring and super long.
The final presentation of our final paper. It was difficult to choose a topic. It would have been better if we were assigned a topic.
I didn't enjoy the presentations we were assigned to do (i.e. leading a discussion).
i didnt like how much time we spent in groups answering questions, it got to be very boring
Nothing
na
Some of the readings were really boring and hard to read. I also didn't like that participation is required and part of your grade.

Feeling pressured to talk when many of the opinions were already mentioned.
Some of the readings were dry in Rawlinson. I didn't care for the topic of the second paper.

Great! Lots of categories were covered and all were interesting. I really liked this class because it gave me insight to things I've never thought about before. Would definitely recommend taking this class to other students.
A very interesting and helpful course on learning about history of current events in our society. I honestly just took the class for an elective and thought it was going to be boring because I hate politics and learning about history, but I actually enjoyed this class and learned quite alot and found the readings to be intriguing. I may even take another American Studies course.

Stacy is a great instructor. She chose interesting readings for the most part and did her best to keep our 930 am class entertained. She showed knowledge on every topic and did her best to thoroughly instruct us
Awesome! The class was fun to attend, and I looked forward to it. She was VERY fair in grading, and completely understanding. While some readings were lengthy- most were very interesting.

I did not like being paired up in twos or threes for discussion. I liked it best when the class discussed as one whole group.
Maybe a little too much reading, I like short but to the point readings
The reading since I'm not very good at dissecting readings.
Some of the readings were a little dry
Early in the morning and almost a huge chunk of your grade being participation was difficult but easy to overcome
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
it was alright. Very intersting and learned things that I never knew before.
A very good course, learned alot from the professor and peers.
Great course. Material was very interesting which made the class enjoyable. I liked the fact that there were only 6 students made the course more engaging.

I recommend this class for anyone with an interest in American history
I enjoyed the class very much, and would recommend both the class and Stacy as an instructor to friends.
I enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it.
18. Other comments:
Stacy will you marry me?
I was super lazy this semester but I bet I would have enjoyed the course a lot more if I was not.
There were times when class discussion as a single group were quiet. However, I feel as though Ms. Nojima assumed that the students haven't read the assigned readings. That was not the case for me in particular. I felt that sometimes my input would be repetitive and not necessary; I didn't want to repeat differently what someone had already said. I also feel that the feedback Ms. Nojima sought after from her students weren't readily available for an on the spot answer. For example, doing a reading response as an assignment allows the student to think thoughtfully, which requires a copious amount of time for a student like myself. I conclude that the questions asked toward the class as a group should have been used as a reading response question rather than an in-class discussion.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Good job
I really enjoyed the small class setting, made group discussions more intimate.
Profession Nojima was a great professor. She really knew the subject and communicated to students effectively. Her in-depth analysis on each topic of the week helped us students to not only think more critically about each subject but provided us with a broader perspective on the concepts. She provided us with great discussion and encouraged us to voice our individual/personal opinions (which is hard to come by). She also provided us with opportunities to receive extra credit. She used different mediums and styles of teaching to make the subject more interesting to learn about.
great teacher, very smart!
GREAT!!!! Very knowledgable of the course material, also actively responds to questions that students ask.
an extremely knowledgeable and professional instructor who inspired me to do my best. Her enthusiasm and extensive insight on all American Studies topics made me want to know more about possibly changing my major to American Studies. Ms. Stacy is a wonderful teacher who is the epitome of one who truly cares about the success of each of her students. Thank you for everything!
A great professor and very knowledgable. She is great at conducting class discussions and applying the material.
Professor Nojima is a highly qualified, helpful and well-informed instructor with good attitude and enthusiastic presentation.
Nice but she expected a lot from our class.
very good instructor
she was one of the best teachers ive ever had. i fully enjoyed having her as my professor and she was always so nice and easy to talk to!
She is a great teacher. There was a lot of readings but she always encouraged us to read and if it was too heavy she would revise it for us. She was always excited for class and ready to discuss.
A great teacher who has a passion for American Studies. Creates an even level of discussion for class involvement and selects great material for thought and class stimulation.
Excellent instructor. She is very approachable and is very understanding of our needs and is very convenient in such that she tries to work around our schedules.
Very, very enthusiastic about the material, to the point of inspiration.
She is an enthusiastic and engaging teacher who encourages her students to not only think critically, but also to take into account different perspectives. She prefers to have class discussions rather than a lecture- based method of teaching, making the class more comfortable and increases participation. Overall, she is a good teacher who really wants her students to learn in her class and succeed.
She is a great teacher who really enjoys teaching this subject.
Solid teacher.
She is a great instructor.
Ms. Nojima was very involved in the creation of discussion in the classroom. Although there was less class discussion than she preferred, she was able to work on trying to engage the class in the materials. She had a good knowledge of the materials as well as the movements that we were focused on in class.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
In depth discussion without criticism
The debates we had in class over topics given.
I enjoyed connecting articles to the overall concept/social movement that we were learning each week.
discussions were challenging but interesting
I loved the variety of topics. I learned a lot from this course and gained many more perspectives of groups that I never would have thought of otherwise. Also, I loved the assignment of analyzing the Frederick Douglass passage, line by line...a very different and interesting way to approach an analysis paper...usually passages are seen as being one thought, but with this exercise I was able to appreciate the thought put into every line, a trait that will definitely be beneficial for me in the future!
I enjoyed the class discussions and the short clips we watched.
The class discussions
Class discussions
The movie that we watched that related back to the re-education camps in vietnam
The videos
learning about all the social movements and alot of history i didnt know
The content. The information I learned about the movements in history was very interesting because I haven't heard of most of them until now.
I enjoyed discussions most, despite half of the class being hella shy and quiet.
I enjoyed some of the readings and being able to discuss them with my peers. I think this allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the material and it gives me different perspectives on topics that are relevant to today.
I enjoyed the freedom in the essays, writing essays was actually the most enjoyable part.
I first took this class as an elective but I enjoy the topics that we discuss. After taking this class, I feel that the information we learn is so important in American culture, and I am slightly disappointed that the material is omitted from history classes in secondary education.
I liked the freedom she gave us when it came to essay topics.
Discussions.
The discussions and movies.
I enjoyed the flexibility that Ms. Nojima had in adjusting schedules and assignments to the class' needs.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
America bashing a little too much
The reading. It was a lot, but has to be done.
It was just a lot of reading but thats what you have to do.
The readings were a little long...but I understand the difficulty in explaining an entire movement in a short passage, so I believe the readings are appropriate.
Nothing
The daily intense reading
some of the readings were lengthy and boring
Long readings
alot of reading
The large amount of reading.
I disliked the long readings that i got lost in. If i wasn't all the way in the reading, i retained very little coming out of it. So interesting readings made things easier.
Some of the readings were quite lengthy.
The different readings all saying the same thing.
Even though the topics were interesting, there was a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time.
I liked learning about the different social movements.
Reading, but there's no way around it.
Presentation :/
I personally thought that there was a lot of readings to complete.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Good course
I enjoyed it, and she seems really enthusiastic about her work.
This was a great course and I'm really glad I took it. It was interesting and really forced myself to think critically on U.S. History and think beyond your own perspective and see others. I loved the subject and I learned a lot.

A+, I'd recommend it to a friend
I enjoyed the course I think it was great.
It was good, pretty fun.
This is a very interesting course that I feel is fundamental to understand, especially since this pertains to our own history. It provided a means to think critically as well as see history through a different viewpoint.
I thought it was a great course and I learned a lot from this course
Good class.
It is an awesome course.
I thought I learned a lot of the different aspects of movements that I never saw before. I think it is the perfect class for students who want to learn a different side of history not taught in general history classes.
