13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Definitely a morning person. Enthusiastic about the subject and love her passion. I just the class shared the same enthusiasm.
Very nice professor!
Great class! Most of the important topics were put up for discussion among the students, so everyone had a chance to input their own ideas/opinions on the subject at hand.
Great Professor! She brought out the best in American Studies 201. I learned a lot while being in this course which is the objective for every course. Mission accomplished.
She is a really nice person and open to any questions or comments I have on particular assignments.
She was really enthusiastic in teaching us, and really knew what she was talking about. She was easy to talk to and ask for help when we needed it.

The in-class discussions.
Movements in the US
I like that the class was guided by Prof. Nojima, and not a class with a rigid outline.
The discussions.
I liked our final project assignment in choosing to volunteer at an organization and connecting it to a activist movement.
encourage critical thinking and become more analytical than choosing one simple answer
I like the class discussions, Stacy really encouraged class discussions to make sure we were keeping up with the readings, and allowing everyone to voice their opinions or viewpoints about the various social movements!
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The tonnes of reading assignments
Reading many materials to discuss.
Lots of reading which was very time consuming Final project community aspect was difficult to find and carry out
n/a
Having to read every night.
Some readings were really boring
i can't find anything that I didn't like in this class. Even there it is a writing intensive, Ms. Nojima made it very interesting and wanting to learn. This includes reading materials. I typically get overwhelmed with many readings but the choices were great.
Assignments were a heavy load! Although this was a writing intensive class I felt that it was also a heavily reading intensive class! A lot of material was covered in this class! I definitely learned a lot!
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This course was very interesting to leann about many movements happened in the US
great course, especially for an intro level course. Broad enough to get though lots of American social movements, but in-depth enough to learn something
Repetitive, but fun!
I really liked it overall and thought everything was very interesting.
Excellent. recommend this class to everyone. Even taking it as a WI requirement, by end of semester, you will be more knowledgeable of topics covered.
Excellent course, amazing instructor, and a lot of reading and writing!

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Had a lot of knowledge on subjects and topics. Asked stimulating questions that encouraged critical thinking. very approachable, wanted everyone to succeed in course.
Very professional, organized, and knowledgeable instructor. Professor Stacy Nojima is the ideal college professor. She is very passionate about her subject and her students.
I really enjoyed her class. She was very passionate about the course and was not judgmental at all. She was kind and friendly, easy to ask for help and wanted everyone in the course to participate in class activities. Class was never boring and I hope I can take a class with her again in the near future.
Very encouraging teacher. Always encourages everyone to contribute to the conversation. Very knowledgeable and one of the best teachers I've had.
She is a great teacher definetly one of my favorite classes I have taken at UH.
She is approachable and well-versed in her field. I believe that she made a good impression on me and my overall experience with her was worthwhile.
Well-organized professor who has a lot of knowledge about the subject and that kept me interested the entire semester.
I really like her as a teacher. She's fun, engaging, and really helps us out. I also like the fact that she's always there for her students, and tries to help them and accommodate them as much as possible.
Stacy is one of the best teachers I have had at the university. She is relatable and willing to help students at all times. She has an extensive knowledge of the subject she is teaching and conveys her message well.
Good teacher but pretty strict when it comes to grading...
a nice instructor whose main concern is getting students active in the community and in the subject matter.
Good teacher.
Great teacher!
Overall great professor, easy to talk to and very sincere.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Learning about all the social movements and institutions. Reading excerpts from different articles and books. it was really stimulating to read about the truth and history of America that they do not teach you in high school and middle school.
I really enjoyed doing the passage analysis essay. It made me think more critically while I read. I also appreciated the detailed syllabus that she provided for us. It kept us on track and responsible for our own learning.
The discussions in class. Class was not just the teacher in the front doing a lecture. It involved everyones ideas and opinions. It was very interesting and stimulating.
The discussion. She created an environment in the beginning of the term that made it very comfortable for an open discussion.
Class Discussions of reading was my favorite part of the class.
Class discussions
Engaging in group discussions, final project, the readers.
I like the fact that the class was discussion based. I appreciated that. It was a very fun way to learn. I also like the fact that there was no final exam. It makes things kinda easier, though, the final paper and presentation counts in its stead. I also liked the fact that the assignments were varied, because it kept things interesting. It wasn't just writing analysis papers all the time. I will say though, that it was hard to get the gist of the assignments at the beginning, because I didn't know what the teacher wanted for some of the assignments. Essentially, I went into it blind. In addition, while I enjoyed the mock trial near the beginning of the semester, I think that it was kinda rushed, especially considering that people were playing for extra credit points. At the beginning of the semester, it's a little hard to make friends because everyone's still awkward with each other. I'd recommend that maybe the mock trial should go later so that the students have time to get to know each other.
The discussion aspect. Although some of the discussions were slow, it helped to be comfortable with the class and hear different opinions others had.
The movements were interesting. I liked the videos.
Presentations
Learning about history from the side of minorities.
Class- discussion
Reading materials including the Civil Rights Movement and Berkley Free Speech Movement, I also like the volunteer project that we were assigned.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
A lot of the readings were extensive, somewhat boring and hard to read.
I understand that in order to have a fruitful discussion, we should all have read the same thing to form our own opinions on it. However, I do not feel like it was necessary to have 4 different readings, especially if they are long and we only get to touch upon the main ideas.
Nothing.
The work wasn't really spread out through the whole term. A lot of work was in the latter part of the term.
Some of the readings were boring and made them difficult to read. Especially the UFW readings.
The midterm
N/A
I'm still not a fan of the final project. I think that there should be alternatives offered to students that are either too busy, or if there's not much of a connection with the project they want to do and a social movement. I also think that a lot of the writing was squeezed into the middle part of the semester. I think that it could be spread out more because pretty much every class or so, there was some sort of writing assignment due. It'd be nice to spread the writing assignments out a little more, or cover certain movements more in-depth than others.
There was a lot of reading, but to be honest that wasn't really a big deal. I enjoyed this class thoroughly.
I felt there was too much readings to do in a short amount of time. I feel that some Of the articles dragged on while others made their point quickly and well.
Facilitation.
All the reading.
none
Some readings in the Labor Movements were long and boring
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
great professor and great class. learned a lot and class discussions were stimulating.
Very interesting and valuable course. Would recommend to a friend in need of a Writing Intensive.
One of the best professors I ever had. I really enjoyed this class and recommend to anyone who needs a writing intensive course.
Excellent lower division WI course. I would highly recommend it.
Great Course! I would take the next level class if there was one and if I could have the same teacher.
It's a great course overall
Worth taking and interesting if you want to learn something new that you probably never heard of before.
Overall, I really liked this course. It was fun, interesting and in a different format compared to my other classes. The teacher is really nice and the material is interesting. I think that if the teacher continues to take feedback from her students, this class will only continue to get better and better.
I learned a lot about the history of the US. This course definitely surpassed my expectations of it. If I could, I would take this course again.
Okay but scary for people who are shy.
An average course but really teaches about the past social movements and issues surrounding them.
Great and very interesting.
Good
Great seminar
18. Other comments:
I would maybe add in more controversial topics to the course to create some diversity among the student. But overall very good course to take.

Stacy Nojima was a very good professor!
she is a good teacher and really tries to get the students interested.
Very well organized.
She was easy to talk to but didn't communicate in the best way, in terms of assignments.
She tried her best on encouraging group discussion but I think the class was too early so no one wanted to talk. I like how she incorporates recent events to our readings in class.
She's a really great teacher! She's easy to talk to and very kind. She expects her students to work hard and do their best, but she's pretty lenient too. Overall, I would recommend her to my friends.
She is a fantastic teacher!
Nojima is one of the best American Studies professors I have had here at U.H. She is easy to talk to and always is willing to look out for the best interest of the class and her students.
she is a wonderful professor. She knew the needs of the students and was able to challenge us all to break out of our shells and discuss out loud. Her understanding of the material and willingness to incorporate all of our ideas into the day's lessons made the class easy to relate to.

I enjoyed learning about other cultures.
I liked how the course linked aspects of real world art and modern media to what we had discussed in class.
The class discussions and open ended conversations.

I really liked the topics covered in class. I also liked the topic for the first paper. Even though I didn't speak much, I did like class discussions. Watching Miss Representation was interesting.
I enjoyed watching Blue Hawai`i and Miss Representations. These films showed me how media and visual images truly have an influential power on our minds. I liked the class discussions. They were especially helpful when we came across some dense readings.
i like the knowledge of course content, i like the materials, and especially i like the way that Dr. Stacy Nojima approach to the lesson. she made students have to think, have to discuss, and have to be well-prepaired.
Blue Hawaii screening and Miss Representation
I enjoyed the class discussions the most because it opened everyone up and we could hear all of the ideas
the disscusions
Class discussion, writing assignments after readings (this helps cement and formulate thoughts)

Nothing
Some of the readings were rather long and confusing
It was a very early class.
i didnt like how much time we spent in groups answering questions, it got to be very boring
Everything was good
I didn't enjoy the presentations we were assigned to do (i.e. leading a discussion).
I didn't like some of the readings just because some were boring and super long.
Some of the readings were really boring and hard to read. I also didn't like that participation is required and part of your grade.
Some of the readings tended to be long and distracted me from the point of the class.

Feeling pressured to talk when many of the opinions were already mentioned.
I disliked the amount of readings we had

Interesting WI class.
It's an interesting course if you're into the history of America
Great class, we were able to cover many interesting issues that related to the overall scope of the course.
A very interesting and helpful course on learning about history of current events in our society. I honestly just took the class for an elective and thought it was going to be boring because I hate politics and learning about history, but I actually enjoyed this class and learned quite alot and found the readings to be intriguing. I may even take another American Studies course.
Great! Lots of categories were covered and all were interesting. I really liked this class because it gave me insight to things I've never thought about before. Would definitely recommend taking this class to other students.

AWESOME. MADE ME LEARN AND WANT TO LEARN. DID I MENTION AWESOME?
Stacy Nojima knows the material of this class very well. She is very good at inspiring students to make their own opinions.
well spoken and very educated
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter.
Great Instructor, really enjoyed her course, very enthusiastic about course material
She was a good teacher and easy to approach. Young and can relate to college students.
She is a very good professor. she was always prepared and encouraged class discussions. I like how she was unbiased about many controversial subjects and opened up different points of views for discussions.
She is very modern, understanding, relatable, nice, speaks to students with respect.
Great personality, and highly interested in the subject in which she teaches. She enjoys students, and feigns off of class participation.
Great Instructor!
A very good teacher and very enthusiastic for discussion. I liked that she was very open to hearing both sides.
A very good teacher and shockingly knowledgeable in the subject for someone so young.
Awesome! The class was fun to attend, and I looked forward to it. She was VERY fair in grading, and completely understanding. While some readings were lengthy- most were very interesting.
Very well thought out course. She is on it on every topic and asks critical thinking questions. She is very easy going and easily approachable and easy to talk to. My favorite instructor at UH so far.
Stacy is a great instructor. She chose interesting readings for the most part and did her best to keep our 930 am class entertained. She showed knowledge on every topic and did her best to thoroughly instruct us

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Group discussions about readings and videos.
I really enjoyed the class discussions.
the socratic discussion and the facilitations
Individual Facilitations
Facilitations and discussions about assigned readings, made everyone engaged and gave everyone a chance to talk.
I liked the interaction with my classmates.
I liked the class discussions. It allowed me to hear about what other people think. I also enjoyed the readings.
Great subjects and reading materials
Debating amongst fellow classmates on certain social movements and ideas was fun and interesting.
The reading responses were my favorite of the course.
I liked the presentations and discussions.
The student facilitations when I did not have to go up.
Class discussion was always interesting (when the majority of people read).
I enjoyed learning about American history through an unbiased stand point
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Probably reading.
I did not like facilitating.
nothing
N/A
having to read a lot of passages.
I did not enjoy some of the dry readings and articles we had to read for homework.
Maybe a little too much reading, I like short but to the point readings
Early in the morning and almost a huge chunk of your grade being participation was difficult but easy to overcome
I did not like being paired up in twos or threes for discussion. I liked it best when the class discussed as one whole group.
The reading since I'm not very good at dissecting readings.
The group presentation...I do not like those in general.
The reading of the very dry materials. Not all of them but some of them.
Some of the readings were a little dry
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
A very good course, learned alot from the professor and peers.
I really enjoyed this course! I would take another class that followed the same structure as this one.
The course is very good, would definitely recommend, the WI and HAP fulfillment is a bonus.
Great course. Material was very interesting which made the class enjoyable. I liked the fact that there were only 6 students made the course more engaging.
it was alright. Very intersting and learned things that I never knew before.
Very good course and it encouraged me to minor in American Studies. I really enjoyed it
Great! Really informative and inspiring
I enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it.
This course is a really insightful course. Almost everything I've learned are new materials.
Although the course has a heavy load of reading, I honestly enjoyed this class.
Very good and interesting but the readings really put me off for some reason.
I enjoyed the class very much, and would recommend both the class and Stacy as an instructor to friends.
A good course.
I recommend this class for anyone with an interest in American history
18. Other comments:
There were times when class discussion as a single group were quiet. However, I feel as though Ms. Nojima assumed that the students haven't read the assigned readings. That was not the case for me in particular. I felt that sometimes my input would be repetitive and not necessary; I didn't want to repeat differently what someone had already said. I also feel that the feedback Ms. Nojima sought after from her students weren't readily available for an on the spot answer. For example, doing a reading response as an assignment allows the student to think thoughtfully, which requires a copious amount of time for a student like myself. I conclude that the questions asked toward the class as a group should have been used as a reading response question rather than an in-class discussion.
I was super lazy this semester but I bet I would have enjoyed the course a lot more if I was not.
Stacy will you marry me?

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I really enjoyed the small class setting, made group discussions more intimate.
great teacher, very smart!
Profession Nojima was a great professor. She really knew the subject and communicated to students effectively. Her in-depth analysis on each topic of the week helped us students to not only think more critically about each subject but provided us with a broader perspective on the concepts. She provided us with great discussion and encouraged us to voice our individual/personal opinions (which is hard to come by). She also provided us with opportunities to receive extra credit. She used different mediums and styles of teaching to make the subject more interesting to learn about.
Good job
Excellent instructor. She is very approachable and is very understanding of our needs and is very convenient in such that she tries to work around our schedules.
Professor Nojima is a highly qualified, helpful and well-informed instructor with good attitude and enthusiastic presentation.
an extremely knowledgeable and professional instructor who inspired me to do my best. Her enthusiasm and extensive insight on all American Studies topics made me want to know more about possibly changing my major to American Studies. Ms. Stacy is a wonderful teacher who is the epitome of one who truly cares about the success of each of her students. Thank you for everything!
she was one of the best teachers ive ever had. i fully enjoyed having her as my professor and she was always so nice and easy to talk to!
A great professor and very knowledgable. She is great at conducting class discussions and applying the material.
very good instructor
Solid teacher.
She is a great teacher. There was a lot of readings but she always encouraged us to read and if it was too heavy she would revise it for us. She was always excited for class and ready to discuss.
Very, very enthusiastic about the material, to the point of inspiration.
A great teacher who has a passion for American Studies. Creates an even level of discussion for class involvement and selects great material for thought and class stimulation.
GREAT!!!! Very knowledgable of the course material, also actively responds to questions that students ask.
She is a great teacher who really enjoys teaching this subject.
Nice but she expected a lot from our class.
Ms. Nojima was very involved in the creation of discussion in the classroom. Although there was less class discussion than she preferred, she was able to work on trying to engage the class in the materials. She had a good knowledge of the materials as well as the movements that we were focused on in class.
She is a great instructor.
She is an enthusiastic and engaging teacher who encourages her students to not only think critically, but also to take into account different perspectives. She prefers to have class discussions rather than a lecture- based method of teaching, making the class more comfortable and increases participation. Overall, she is a good teacher who really wants her students to learn in her class and succeed.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The debates we had in class over topics given.
discussions were challenging but interesting
I enjoyed connecting articles to the overall concept/social movement that we were learning each week.
In depth discussion without criticism
I enjoyed some of the readings and being able to discuss them with my peers. I think this allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the material and it gives me different perspectives on topics that are relevant to today.
Class discussions
I enjoyed the class discussions and the short clips we watched.
learning about all the social movements and alot of history i didnt know
The class discussions
The videos
Discussions.
The content. The information I learned about the movements in history was very interesting because I haven't heard of most of them until now.
I enjoyed the freedom in the essays, writing essays was actually the most enjoyable part.
I enjoyed discussions most, despite half of the class being hella shy and quiet.
I loved the variety of topics. I learned a lot from this course and gained many more perspectives of groups that I never would have thought of otherwise. Also, I loved the assignment of analyzing the Frederick Douglass passage, line by line...a very different and interesting way to approach an analysis paper...usually passages are seen as being one thought, but with this exercise I was able to appreciate the thought put into every line, a trait that will definitely be beneficial for me in the future!
I liked the freedom she gave us when it came to essay topics.
The movie that we watched that related back to the re-education camps in vietnam
I enjoyed the flexibility that Ms. Nojima had in adjusting schedules and assignments to the class' needs.
The discussions and movies.
I first took this class as an elective but I enjoy the topics that we discuss. After taking this class, I feel that the information we learn is so important in American culture, and I am slightly disappointed that the material is omitted from history classes in secondary education.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The reading. It was a lot, but has to be done.
It was just a lot of reading but thats what you have to do.
America bashing a little too much
Some of the readings were quite lengthy.
Nothing
alot of reading
The daily intense reading
Long readings
Reading, but there's no way around it.
The large amount of reading.
The different readings all saying the same thing.
I disliked the long readings that i got lost in. If i wasn't all the way in the reading, i retained very little coming out of it. So interesting readings made things easier.
The readings were a little long...but I understand the difficulty in explaining an entire movement in a short passage, so I believe the readings are appropriate.
I liked learning about the different social movements.
some of the readings were lengthy and boring
I personally thought that there was a lot of readings to complete.
Presentation :/
Even though the topics were interesting, there was a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I enjoyed it, and she seems really enthusiastic about her work.
very informative and different style of learning than im used to but i learned alot
This was a great course and I'm really glad I took it. It was interesting and really forced myself to think critically on U.S. History and think beyond your own perspective and see others. I loved the subject and I learned a lot.
interesting material covered
Good course
I enjoyed the course I think it was great.
The course was very well-organized and interesting!
an excellent mind-stimulating course that I would recommend to friends in a heartbeat.

A great class to improve writing and communication as well as learning alot about social movements.
lots of reading but learned alot
Good class.
It was a great class, and I am glad that I took it.
It was good, pretty fun.
A+, I'd recommend it to a friend
Amazing course! I would and have recommended this course to friends.
I thought it was a great course and I learned a lot from this course
it was ok
I thought I learned a lot of the different aspects of movements that I never saw before. I think it is the perfect class for students who want to learn a different side of history not taught in general history classes.
It is an awesome course.
This is a very interesting course that I feel is fundamental to understand, especially since this pertains to our own history. It provided a means to think critically as well as see history through a different viewpoint.
